An UNcommon Creative Cultural Community Progress Report 1st Half 2022

Update: $56 million invested to date in the Creative Placemaking revitalization of Shreveport Common to create an UNcommon cultural community. Public and private partners, neighbors, developers and a dedicated Arts and artist community are transforming the formerly blighted 9-block area to a vibrant, walk-able urban neighborhood with spaces and places for all to stumble upon the FUN. To date, 29 properties - many on the states most endangered list - have been preserved and redeveloped to exciting new live, work and market spaces; 7 are under construction and 16 are in pre-development.

What’s New and Happening Soon Martin Welch Gallery Opens in the New Andress Artist & Entrepreneur Center

Everyday something new is happening in the 9-block area, with 206 events in 20 unique venues (2021 – First Qtr. 2022). Artist Martin Welch moved his gallery from the French Quarter to Andress Arts & Entrepreneur Center. 10 local artists are also located on the first floor. Upstairs some of Shreveport’s brightest entrepreneurs are working from unique office and shared spaces. Louisiana Food Prize Taco Wars 2022 a HOT Success!

10,000 come out for Tacos, Salsa, Music and FUN! This popular Food Prize event had record breaking crowds at its new location in Shreveport Common. 10 restaurants generated over $60,000 in revenue while they competed for cash prizes. Winners: El Novillo Carniceria won Golden Taco and Rameriz Mexican Restaurant won Best Salsa.

Beaird Family Foundation grant supported the addition of Rochelle (Ro) Williams as part-time Office Administrator for the SCI staff; Property owner Rob Cochran, board member Aaron Storer of Storer Construction, Ralph Whitley of Ralph Whitley Builders and KAM Handy Ma’am Services volunteered their time, tools and talent to make sure the AARP tables sets were installed in Caddo Common park; LADEQ grants helped assess 7 properties this year, and a City of Shreveport Brownfields grant helped get a property, which at one time had 5 underground tanks, environmentally safe and ready for Redevelopment; Give for Good donors gave to support the SCI Redevelopment Efforts;.

Finally, Shreveport Landmark reinstated to donate property to Shreveport Common, Inc. (SCI). Attorneys Tom Arceneaux and Havard Scott helped with that very complicated project. THE PARTNERS - REVITALIZING THE AREA UNCOMMON Arts & Cultural Programming: Shreveport Common is a creative cultural community and the Shreveport Regional Arts Council (SRAC), neighbors, property owners and artists are committed to find ways to program the area, even with restrictions in place to protect our community from Covid-19. In 2021 through SRAC, Logan Mansion, minicini? Antioch Baptist Church, StageWorks, APEX, Poetic X, SB Rides, walking tours by Robert Trudeau, RNL’s Cookery, American Millennium Project, Caddo Parish Parks and Recreation, and many more, creatively found ways to host over 186 events in Shreveport Common, and 40 in the first half of 2022, creating 290 days of programming.

These neighbors distanced through virtual art exhibits, drive-In and front porch concerts, small outdoor spoken word gatherings, picnics, Black Lives Matter marches and murals, and streamed events such as the GSU Master Class series and Home Coming Exhibitions. In addition to these events, many of the neighbors and artist were recognized for getting food and much needed medical masks to those in need. Logan Mansion was awarded the state’s SPIRIT AWARD. Expect to see more in 2022 as Shreveport Regional Arts Council, Caddo Parish Parks & Recreation and the Shreveport Common neighbors, including newest neighbors Lisa Brutto, Jim Malsch and Chris Wells finding creative ways to keep our community safe AND bring fun and entertainment to the area. Additionally, SRAC has commissioned 32 public art installations in Shreveport Common including THE FLAME atop the Kallenbeg Tower, the 20' tall LED lit ART THE DALMATIAN and 12 artist murals in the area. New this year, the Caddo Common LED lit 20’ tall Artistrees. SRAC is nationally recognized for creating an ARTS ECOSYSTEM; building artist capacity through entrepreneurial training, provides opportunities for commissions and professional critique while creating a built environment that attracts artists and developers. To date over 175 artists have completed the program.
