Paralympics If you don’t have tickets for the paralympic games, the Aylesbury Big Screen will be in Vale Park, HP20 1DX from 12noon to 5pm on Sunday 1 September. Wendover Celebrates Christmas Switch On, Wendover Chamber of Wednesday 5 December It’s difficult to move our minds forward to Christmas but now is the time. Last year everyone enjoyed the Lights Switch On by local celebrity Dolly Saville (the oldest barmaid in the country who has been at The Red Lion since 1940). Wendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce would now like to invite the people of Wendover to nominate a local celebrity to lead the Lights Switch On this year on Wednesday 5 December. Suggestions could include people who have served the community for a long time or perhaps Olympic Games Makers to celebrate this special year.

Finally Mimi’s Mission Quilt I am a Wendover mum with 3 young children who has been running a thriving sewing and quilting group called Wendover MakeClub We are originally a group of mums from the John Hampden school, but growing to include some very hip Grannies too, and share a love of making things in a traditional way. We love to sew, knit and make quilts. We sew together in traditional Quilting Bees where each member makes a part of the quilt. We make quilts for each other, for families who we know and love in the village who have suffered sadness or to celebrate joy. Our current work in progress is a quilt for the Mimi’s Mission charity which will be exhibited in the church and in various High Street shops ahead of it being raffled at Christmas to raise funds.
Our friendly, caring school requires additional Midday Supervisors to join our lunchtime team in September.
I am running a new course for absolute beginners to make their own quilt, starting in late September and running through til Xmas at the Ellesborough Hall (daytime) and the The role involves supervising the children while they eat lunch in Kimble Stewart Hall (evening class). We punched above our weight at the Olympics…and we’re punching above our weight in the fight against HS2. The Olympics were a tremendous effort on the part of the whole 01442 381549 or 07988 742385 nation. Every competitor spoke with great enthusiasm about the experience of being carried to a medal by the crowds. It was the best of British coming together for a common cause. And now, after 2½ years, there are serious cracks in the government’s resolve to force HS2 through the Chilterns. ASTON CLINTON Now is the time to crack HS2 wide open and end this threat SUPPER CLUB forever. Our Olympic competitors never gave up until they YOUR LOCAL crossed the finish line. We’re going to cross the finish line UNDERGROUND and stop HS2. The volunteers at the Olympics were a happy RESTAURANT and dedicated team. Wendover HS2 needs a team of spirited volunteers to help stop HS2. Just a bit of your time will do the VISIT: trick. The more hands, the lighter the task. It’s really WWW.ACSUPPERCLUB.CO.UK simple—you (and a friend) can sign up to help by contacting Marion Clayton on 01296 622 862 or TO FIND OUT MORE ........ mclayton@buckscc.gov.uk. Don’t miss this Olympic opportunity to make a difference to the Chilterns.
Further flaw in case for HS2 The announcement that First Group have been granted the Franchise on the West Coast mainline (WCML) undermines the Dft case for HS2 which they have always argued is for capacity reasons. In their statement First Group emphasise the unique nature of the West Coast mainline in having ‘a considerable amount of unused capacity’. It would seem that the Dft now accepts that the WCML does not have capacity issues or that it will be full in the next decade. This is further evidence that the case for HS2 is fatally flawed and we must all along with the District and County Councils continue to fight this proposal. Councillor Steve Bowles

Work New Fundraising group needs you! A group of friends got together at the recent Summer Ball in Wendover, organised by Robert Duggan for Iain Rennie Grove House Hospice and Prostate Cancer, and were inspired to launch a new Fundraising Group for the hospice. Their mission is to organise events in the local area to raise much-needed funds, and they are looking for likeminded people to join them. Fundraising Groups in other communities say how rewarding their volunteer role is – and how much fun they have with their fundraising! If you’d like to find out more, please contact Community Fundraiser Nicola King on 01442 820732.

Keep an eye on the local press and Iain Rennie Facebook page for dates and times - and do pop in to meet Michelle and her team of volunteers. With your help we can make this new shop a great success and give more local patients with life-limiting illness the choice to stay at home. If you are a Games Maker, or know one, please contact Wendover News (details on page 1) with your photo and story. Being part of a team based at a unique and one-off venue at Horse Guards Parade made the whole experience that much more special, and the two weeks flew by in the end. I feel privileged to have been chosen to help, and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. In particular, it’s been wonderful to meet fellow Games Makers, several of whom are also Wendoverians, and I can now say, almost truthfully, that I represented Wendover at the Olympic Games. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this possible, namely my family for holding the fort for two weeks while I was off making sandcastles somewhere near The Mall! Happy memories.

The Russell Arms The people of Butler’s Cross, in conjunction with the team behind No. 2 Pound Street in Wendover, are proud to announce the re-opening of the Russell Arms. Once the Prime Minister’s local whilst at Chequers, and ever a prime spot for Chiltern Ridge walkers, the Russell Arms may have had its ups and downs in recent times, but in this game changing year for Britain 2012 we will see the very concept of the ‘local’ redefined, as the pub becomes not only a place to drink quality local ales and eat regionally sourced classics, but a place to learn new skills with bread making classes, wine and beer tastings, and a chance to shop for top quality locally-produced essentials or for a quick pint after work, a business lunch or a decent Sunday Roast. The villagers have rallied together to save the pub, pooling resources to buy it. The diary is open for bookings and we can’t wait for you to become acquainted with what we hope will be your new local: the Russell Arms. Legacy Inspired by the Olympics...... Have you been glued to the most exciting sporting event ever? Has it inspired you to get off the sofa and get fit? Or are you already fit and need some extra motivation? Why don’t you enter an event? Here in the Chilterns we have some amazing events for walkers, runners and cyclists. For additional motivation why not run/walk for charity? Exercise makes a positive difference to your body and mind, and raising money for charity makes you feel good about yourself on every level! So where do I start? Find an event you would like, make sure it’s an achievable challenge and choose a charity close to your heart. Rope some friends in - it’s a lot more difficult to stay motivated on your own without someone to spur you on and race against for a bit of healthy competition. Join a class and meet likeminded people. Local fitness professionals can advise you on up-coming events and training. There are many events you can take part in e.g. the Chilterns 3 Peak Challenge walk on 16 September (Iain Rennie); 5k fun run on 14 October (Florence Nightingale); the 15k Ridgeway Run (Tring Running club), to name but a few. Or looking further ahead our very own Coombe Hill Run in June next year. Feeling more ambitious and lucky enough to get a place? The Virgin London Marathon is 21 April 2013. JPR fitness run FIT2RUN classes with an excellent track record preparing both individuals and groups for events. Class members are invited to free training sessions and get free training plans or join in one of our Nordic Walks. Visit www.jprfitness.co.uk or call Jackie on 07788 568204.

11+ Coaching in Wendover with Experienced Tutor
Cricket Wendover CC juniors had a very successful season, with the U14s winning their league and U11s winning their division (the league will be decided in early September when we play the winners of the other division). U9s narrowly lost out on winning their division. An excellent Colts Day was organised with junior awards for the season. There’s no space to record all the age group awards, but the overall U12+ awards went to: Senior batting: Tom Nicholson
For more details phone: Senior bowling: Brandon Ridgeley
07789 690139 01296 625548
Senior all rounder: Dan Norton Congratulations to all award winners. Thanks also to parents and team managers who had the unenviable task of arranging and re-arranging matches to suit the weather. Thanks also to the various coaches who have run sessions for young people at the club, and also those people who have arranged and run the Cricket After School Club at Wendover Junior School. Wendover CC beat 3 other teams in reaching the final on 28 July of Amersham CC’s 6-aside competition for local clubs during their Cricket Week. Winchmore Hill batted first and were restricted to 76 for 4 off 5 overs, thanks to tight bowling and athletic fielding, especially with Jon Green taking a towering running catch just inside the boundary and
Mike Green throwing down the keeper’s end wicket from long off for a run out. Wendover raced away in their innings as George Robinson and Mike Green both peppered the boundary with fours and sixes. 2 wickets fell in mid innings but Seb Barr kept up the impetus with Robinson and the reply only faltered against left arm spin in the final over. However Wendover scampered the winning run with 2 balls and 4 wickets to spare, gaining the trophy in impressive style. Team: Mike & Jon Green, George Robinson, Seb Barr, Chris Morley and Sam Boardman. In the Mid Bucks League Premier Division, the 1st XI have struggled but recorded a timely victory at Cadmore End on 11 August. In contrast, the 2nd XI won 3 of their last 4 games in Division 2 and drew the other. Notable performances have included Jonathan Seabrook’s 4 for 14 in the 8 wicket victory at Downley and James Heafford’s 4 for 39 and 22 plus Dan Norton’s 23 in the drawn game v Potten End. George Robinson scored 42* in the 9 wicket win at Waddesdon and followed it up with 5 wickets for 6 runs in the 5 wicket defeat of Hampden, where Shanil Patel scored a fine 63. Looking ahead as we near the end of another cricket season, the annual President’s Day match will be held at the Witchell Ground on Saturday 29 September from 1.00 p.m.

You Write Chain Shops in Wendover
I write in support of the letter of Andrew Radford in the July edition of Wendover News concerning chain shops in Wendover. Like Andrew, I have lived in the area for many years. Over this time I have seen towns such as Tring and Princes Risborough ℡ 01296 625296 lose many retailers and slide into recession 07885 095366 only to become vibrant and successful again. General building work:In both of these cases like so many others, Local Builder the arrival of major retailers has saved the Non VAT registered town centre. In both Tring and Princes Risborough the arrival of M&S and Costa Nick Taylor started a successful revival, attracting Landscape Gardener shoppers back into the town and helping Decking, Walls, Drives, Lawns, smaller retailers flourish. It is a well known Ponds, Patios, Paths and all strategy of retail developers to secure major General Landscaping retailers as anchor tenants, attracting other Wendover (01296) 696840 businesses and shoppers. Having both a Tesco and Budgens in the town has certainly been a negative, with both retailers Fencing not providing an essential service.

a high street name or two in Wendover, restaurant or otherwise. A Pizza Express or a Zizzi would indeed provide a vibrant but affordable venue for the locals and their families to enjoy creating employment opportunities, especially for the young. In fact I'm sure the pubs and other retailers would benefit from this additional footfall. Surely this is better than having empty and decaying shops all along the high street. Like Andrew, I hope that those responsible for the current planning strategy start to consider an alternative approach that welcomes both large and small businesses alike before it is too late for Wendover. Dog Fouling Once again it seems necessary to remind some dog owners that they are required to clean up after their dogs. The offending area is the most beautiful area that we have in Wendover, the canal path. As a regular walker of this area, not always at the same time of day, I have been surprised at the negligence of some people. This morning Friday 10 August about 7.30 a huge amount was dumped in the middle of the path. At this time of the year there are a great many children using this path, and they, having been encouraged to go out and enjoy the countryside, should not have to be careful where they walk because of some really lazy people. It is not acceptable either to leave little parcels hanging in the trees or on the paths, do these people think that someone is going to clear up after them? Please clean up your act, most people have, but a few obviously do not respect their animals! Name & address supplied.

Matters Arising View From The Chair
Village Quiz
As the 2012 Olympics has ended and the Paralympics is beginning, I thought the Chairman’s report this month should have an Olympic Theme. Since I became Chair in 2011, the process of Chairing the Parish Council has been quite a Marathon. I hope with the way things are progressing that we are near to the finishing line. We have hurdled many difficulties and hopefully nobody will be for the High Jump. I feel at long last there is a degree of synchronicity.
Wendover Village Quiz has been organised by the Parish Council since Autumn 1992. It is FREE to enter and FREE to watch. Teams of three compete against one another in a knock out competition on Thursday evenings starting promptly at 7.30pm in the Bowls Club, Dobbins Lane, HP22 6BU. The bar is open beforehand and in the interval. The fun starts on 11 October but team entries must be received at the Clock Tower by Monday 3 September.
All councillors have worked hard to ensure that Team Wendover is at last moving in the right direction and that there will be a lasting legacy for years to come. We are on the right track. We need to ensure that our budget/precept is organised and managed on a cyclical basis so that we are not reinventing the wheel. As with any team it’s not pleasant being hammered, if you give something your best shot then so be it. Remember we are volunteers. Parish Councils are elected every four years and we aim to do as our electors trust us to, using our best endeavours. We often wrestle with our thoughts when deciding what view to take; some people think that we shoot from the hip but with good guidance that should never happen. Thank you for all your support. We look forward to seeing you in September!
Next Parish Council Meeting: Monday 3 September, 7.30pm Wendover Library Room Community Orchard Your Opinion We are in discussion with AVDC about the suitability of Walnut Tree Meadow (an area of land bordering the Wendover Arm Canal), for a Community Orchard. We would like to plant over sixty (at least one for each name on the War Memorial) heritage fruit trees native to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Oxfordshire, ‘parkland style’ over suitable areas of the Meadow (some parts of it are unsuitable because of the presence of ground water springs).
AVDC have asked for evidence that the above project would have the support of Robert Duggan, the community. We hope at the same Chairman time to re-establish the presence of
locally sourced Walnut Trees in the Meadow and intend to keep the open nature of this publicly owned land. Please let us know at the Clock Tower if we have your support or otherwise, for what we feel is a lovely project and would be called the Wendover Jubilee Community Orchard.
Local Produce Market Manor Waste 9am to 1pm Saturday 15 September The Clock Tower The Clock Tower building is 170 years old this year and needs large scale renovations. The bell tower section is made of wood, and much of this needs replacing. The bell itself also requires attention, and we would like to put in an automated winding mechanism for the clock (currently wound regularly by hand!) The Council is launching a project to raise awareness of the history of the Clock Tower amongst the local community. We will be producing two leaflets and a children's worksheet for distribution, to help in this learning process. We need to raise the estimated £55,000 for these renovations. The Parish Council will contribute and we will apply for Heritage Lottery funding for the majority of the rest. We will also be launching a public fund to enable the whole community to donate as well. Please see our new website dedicated to this project on the Clock Tower www.wendoverclocktower.org.uk
