Fancy a long weekend in France? The members of Wendover Twinning Association will be hosted this year by our friends in Liffré. We’ll be staying with families, living their lifestyle, eating their food and drinking their wine (always a great pleasure). I know they’re in the throes of sorting out a weekend of great entertainment for us and, based on past experience, it should be an action-packed and fun weekend. We’ll be staying an extra day this year, leaving Wendover on the afternoon of Thursday 23 May, travelling overnight and arriving in Liffré the following morning. Our return will be on Monday 27 May, with an e.t.a. of midnight. Most families have someone who speaks English and there is always somebody around to help out the less confident so don’t let a lack of the language put you off an excellent way to learn more about the French and dispel the myths put about by the media that they don’t like us. They do! If you would like to participate or just know more about what is involved please contact us at one of the following numbers: Barbara 01296 624708, Glynis 01296 625565, Mike 01296 622778

Know your blood pressure Thursday 25 April, 10am – 3pm, Wendover Library Room Do you have high blood pressure? Do you know what your blood pressure is? One of the major causes of strokes is high blood pressure. Strokes lead to deaths, and serious disabilities and can occur at any age. In many cases a change of diet can reduce blood pressure. Medication can also help some people. The Rotary Club of Wendover and District has arranged for qualified staff to be at Wendover Library Room from 10am until 3pm to take your blood pressure and provide tea, coffee, soft drinks and biscuits all for free. Do yourself a favour. Know your blood pressure.

Myths about losing weight

A recent article in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine refuted several “false and scientifically unsupported beliefs about obesity (that) are pervasive in both scientific literature and the popular press". Some of the most striking are: Small sustained changes in food intake and/or exercise will result in large weight changes in the long term — This does not take into account the fact that energy requirements change Hearing Aid Batteries Due to changes in the provision of NHS as body mass changes over time; as hearing aid services we are no longer weight is lost, it takes increasingly able to supply hearing aid batteries. If more exercise and/or reduced food

intake to lose more weight. Slow, gradual weight loss is best for long-term success — Studies have demonstrated that very-low-calorie diets result in significantly more weight loss than low-calorie diets (16% vs 10% of body weight) at 6 months, and differences in weight loss persist up to 18 months. (But seek medical advice before starting a very-low-calorie diet.) A bout of sexual activity burns 100 to 300 kcal per person — Calculating actual energy expenditure during sex gives an estimated total of 14 kcals of extra energy expended! However, sustained, intensive physical activity will result in significant energy expenditure and can aid weight loss, and has other health benefits. Changes to our usual Opening Hours We will close at 1pm on Wednesday 13 March for staff training. We will be closed on Good Friday 29 March, Saturday 30 March – and on Easter Monday 1 April 2013.

No2 Pound Street

Russell Arms

With the snow behind us No2 is bursting with energy and life as we welcome in the Spring. Starting on 1 March and for the whole weekend we will be celebrating Wales on the back of St David’s Day. Wales is truly championing food and drink at the moment and as a retailer there is a wealth of choice when it comes to selecting suppliers from Wales. We have kept a solid relationship with many since the beginning and a few new suppliers have found their way in more recently. Firm favourites have always been Trealys Farm ~ fennel salami and air dried beef, Gorwydd Caerphilly ~ gold award winner in the World Cheese Awards and Caws Cenarth ~ Golden Cenarth supreme champion in British Cheese Awards and plenty more. Newcomers this season are Ancre Hills Vineyard for their world class wines, Cwnd for seasonal meat and fish smoked, cured and Patchwork Pates.

For 364 days a year Mum thinks of everyone else before herself, so this Mothering Sunday, make sure you put Mum first. Book a table at Russell Arms and indulge her with a traditional three course Sunday roast. That way, no-one has to cook and there will be no fighting over who is doing the washing up ~ happy days. Chef and his team are busily sourcing the finest local meats for your roast and creating a menu fit for a queen. To learn more call 01296 624411 or visit russellarms.co.uk. There will be a little gift for mum on each table (so as to avoid any awkwardness ~ please let us know if your booking has more than one mum on the table).

Celebrating Mothering Sunday couldn’t be easier, there will be plenty of gift ideas starting with The Lawn Collection. A beautifully selected range of teas, created with love to taste second to none. The notion behind The Lawn Collection is to create teas to bring you back to our classic English garden and encourage you to take time out to enjoy your infusion. The Lawn will be at No2 on Saturday 9 March 2013 between 10am and 2pm. Sniff, slurp and taste to your heart’s content, but we are confident you will find a flavour or two to indulge in. And our timing is purposeful as we think The Lawn Collection makes the ideal Mother’s Day gift. Do you have any ideas for new products that you would like No2 to stock? Drop us a line to shop@2poundstreet.com, all entries will be entered into a prize draw for a bottle of No2 champagne.

Happy Birthday Lady Grey ! Lady Grey Tea Room, located in the pretty Barn Courtyard, behind Antiques at Wendover, will celebrate its first birthday on 14 March 2013.

Its first year can only be described as a total success, even though this involved a complete career change and massive learning curve for the proprietors, Amanda and Jennifer. Wendover embraced and welcomed us, which made it a lot easier.

Our ethos is to supply delicious fresh home made cakes, all made by Amanda and Jennifer. Our repertoire over the year has grown. Now if you pop in you are likely to see a lemon meringue cake beside a raspberry and lime drizzle torte. It still makes us smile when the customers walk in and say “wow”. Wendover Pool

March 2013 www.wendovernews.co.uk 19

The Governors of the John Colet Academy and the Swimming is not a compulsory activity on the Committee of the Wendover Swimming Association make the secondary curriculum; therefore we have to following announcement. think very carefully about any actions that could be detrimental to the rest of the school. The boilers which heat the water at the Wendover Pool failed We have fantastic sporting facilities including last summer which meant the John Colet School had to close the multi-use games area, four football the pool in autumn 2012 because of the low water pitches and the sports hall, which are available for temperature. community use outside of school hours. The School has made a detailed review of the repairs required including installing new boilers and repairing the air heater. The immediate cost to make the pool usable is approximately £20,000 and the anticipated repairs needed over the next five years are estimated to cost £90,000. The running costs of the pool are around £40,000 per year in addition to this. The Governors and the Committee agree that even if the money could be raised to make repairs this year, doing so would be a waste of the School’s and the members’ money if the level of running costs and repairs mean that the pool cannot be kept open beyond 2013. The WSA’s contribution to the pool costs and income from swimming clubs amounts to around £12,000 each year. Currently, the School receives a grant of approximately £17,000 per year from Buckinghamshire County Council to assist with the running costs of the pool. However, this grant will cease for all Buckinghamshire schools which have a pool from September 2013 so there will be a shortfall of around £28,000 per year on running the Wendover Pool.

We are currently working with the WSA to look at the options for the pool. A conclusion will need to be reached by May half term, as all budgets and curriculum planning needs to have been finalised by then for the forthcoming academic year. We are proud of our strong links with the community and are working hard to reach a workable conclusion.

The Wendover Swimming Association Committee comments: WSA appreciate that the school must prioritise its spending and recognise that the running and repair costs of the pool will become unaffordable once the County grant stops in the autumn. If the repairs are not made, to the boilers at least, then the Pool cannot re-open. This would be an enormous pity, particularly as the Pool was originally built by the community itself. The Governors have asked WSA whether the community could do more to operate the pool and make it significantly cheaper to run and to repair.

So, we are asking the members of the WSA and the wider community what you would like to see happen now. Please Given the withdrawal of the swimming pool grant and with contact us with your views, comments, suggestions and any likely further reductions in Government funding in future, it is offers of support as soon as possible, by email to: important that we use school funds to support the curriculum. membership@wendoverswimmingassociation.co.uk.

Local Face: Candy Lamond Candy was born in Beaconsfield. Her earliest memories of Wendover are being driven through the beautiful High Street on her way to Aylesbury Sailing Club, Weston Turville Reservoir. She completed the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, played the flute in numerous groups that toured Europe and even narrated “Tubby the Tuba” in French! Having worked at High Wycombe Music Centre as a flute teacher and bar maid at various local pubs in Beaconsfield, Candy moved to North London where she met and married her now ex-husband in 1989. She had a ten year career in Personnel and Training before starting a family. Due to changes in her husband’s career, the family lived in numerous other places including Somerset and Bristol, culminating in a move to RAF Halton, when sadly they parted in February 2003. Candy was left unintentionally homeless with three young children, the youngest, Talitha, then aged 2 and a half, severely disabled and her other two, then aged 8 and 6, struggling with the change of circumstances.

to find the ideal home for her family who are regular attendees at St Mary’s. The house was converted for Tali’s needs making things a great deal easier. Iain Rennie and Florence Nightingale Charities were both able to support them too. When Tali broke her hip the church organised meals to be provided for the family. This was a real blessing and something that the congregation continues to do for those who are bereaved or suffering illness even now. Candy has worked since 2007 as the volunteer shop manager at @stmarys and has been a member of the music group, playing the flute and conducting, for many years.

and many came to say farewell, together with a balloon release on top of Coombe Hill, Tali’s favourite spot. For those who are interested see Facebook Totally Tali page. Candy started working as an Office Manager at a small irrigation firm in 2011 for three days a week. She also started a degree in Business Management at evening class that same year. She is currently trying to balance the two jobs, studying and planning a wedding at the same time but it is proving to be a tall order!

In 2009, Candy met Neill, but that’s another story. Suffice to say, they have continued a long distance relationship for over three years and hope to marry next year.

The Church shop, @stmarys has grown since it opened in 2005 and it provides a place for people to gather together either just to chat, book a church function and/or purchase fair trade and ethically sourced goods. This month they celebrate Fair-trade Fortnight and allow customers to enjoy a Big Brew of free tea/coffee on Thursday 28 February together with some free nibbles to taste.

Sadly, in February 2010 Talitha died It was at this point that Wendover and after complications during surgery. St Marys’ Church became a true Once again solace came from the sanctuary for Candy. Candy was able Church. A memorial was held for Tali

Clock Tower Restoration Fund RAF Freedom of Entry Parade

Firstly thanks to those of you who responded to my request for volunteers to be part of the Chairman’s Snow Patrol. We have a small group of volunteers who, in the event of snow, will turn out to help clear pavements and driveways for those unable to do so themselves. I noticed a similar initiative being set up at Princess Mary Gate. The more the merrier! Just let the Clock Tower have your mobile number and I will send out alerts via text if the need arises.

Two original paintings by local artists Carol Blyth and John Hull, have been donated to the Clock Tower Fund. They will be auctioned at the Fundraising Quiz in Wendover Memorial Hall on Friday 8 March at 7.30pm. Tables of 8, tickets £12 per person, available from Wendover Clock Tower.

The Fundraising for the Clock Tower refurbishment is going well. We have now raised a total sum of £2,376 (11th Feb) which is an excellent effort, but we still need a lot more. A fundraising quiz is taking place on March 8th and the Events Group have other things planned to ensure we can reach our target. In fundraising terms it also helps if we can have as many petition forms completed as possible so that the initiative is demonstrably something the community wants. Petition forms can be obtained via the Clock Tower.

Annual Parish Meeting Wed 17 April, 7.30pm, W Mem Hall This year the theme of the APM is the renovation of our Clock Tower. There will be information on view about the history and the future of this important landmark. We will hold a fund raising event during the Meeting. We shall also be promoting Wendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce who will be there to publicise their ‘I love Wendover’ loyalty card scheme.

We hope everyone will come along to this very exciting event on Friday 22 March which marks the close ties between Wendover and RAF Halton who have been awarded the Freedom of the Vale by AVDC. RAF Halton are ‘Exercising their Right to Freedom of Entry’ with a march past of troops with bayonets fixed and the Queen’s Colour flying. The Central Band of the Royal Air Force will be in attendance and there will be a flypast at 11.00 hours. The High Street and other adjacent roads will be closed between approx. 9.30am to 12.30pm, we hope everyone will be understanding about any disruption. A Freedom of Entry is the highest tribute that can be paid to any organisation or service. Freedom privileges date back to medieval times when fortress walls afforded protection to cities and towns from incursions of outlaw bands and attacks launched by feudal lords. The citizens wisely refused to allow the entry of bodies of armed men unless they were completely sure that those who carried arms would not use them against the townsfolk. Hence the granting of permission for a formed body of armed men to enter a city, a ‘Freedom of Entry’, became a mark of trust and confidence in which that armed body was held by its citizens.
