New safer route to school for Wendover pupils

The task of getting children to school in Wendover has been an increasing problem over the years. Now, there is a safer alternative than braving the gridlocked cars emitting potentially harmful exhaust. The canal towpath is a viable option for most pupils approaching on foot from the northern end of Wendover.

“The laying of this path has taken longer than planned but the result will be very worthwhile. Wendover Canal Trust has reported that the upgrade will be completed to Perch Bridge by midOctober. The second phase to the centre of Halton is scheduled to be completed by January.”

The schools and other organisations that share the Wharf Road campus have long striven to reduce the amount of traffic in the local area during the school run times. We regularly engage in schemes and activities to encourage children and parents to walk, scoot or cycle to school.

We are delighted that the Wendover Canal Trust has obtained funding for the renovation of the canal towpath between Wendover and Halton. This will provide an all-weather surface for children and parents to use to and from school. Not only will this help to reduce traffic on Wharf and Manor Road, but will also provide a cleaner, greener route for children to enjoy.

During the renovation, engineers working on the towpath have constantly had their fences and no-access barriers vandalised or thrown in the canal, and their guide wires defining the height of the path repeatedly cut. Thames Valley Police have been notified.

Wendover Grill and Kebab

Congratulations to Wendover Grill and Kebab on their Food Hygiene Rating of 5 stars, awarded on 1 September. An appropriate award for all the efforts it made in refurbishing their premises earlier in the year.

Vandalism of memorial bench

Memorial benches are dotted along the Wendover Canal. They offer a place to rest after a vigorous walk, or just somewhere to stop and relax.

The latest new bench, installed in May, is dedicated to the memory of a long-standing Wendover Canal Trust supporter and office holder Barry Martin. Barry devoted much of his life, and all of his retirement, to helping run the Trust. When he died his widow and family had a bench installed alongside the

canal, at the spot where it was diverted to allow the A41 road bridge to be built. Barry would be quietly gratified that his memory is celebrated by helping others.

Recently the bench was destroyed and it was clear from the degree of damage that it was not a quick action, but a sustained and lengthy attack. Trust volunteers quickly removed the damaged bench which was in a dangerous state, and someone could easily have been injured. “Needless to say the volunteers are sickened that anyone should find satisfaction is such mindless destruction”, said Peter Elwin, from the Wendover Canal Trust. Compassionate Café in Wigginton, A new Compassionate Café is being run on the first Wednesday of every month at Wigginton Community Shop & Café, providing a space for local people affected by bereavement to meet others.. The first one will be on Wednesday 4 October, from 13:30 to 15:00, at The Sports Ground, Chesham Road, Wigginton, HP23 6HH. This is a partnership between Rennie Grove Peace Hospice Care charity and the Wigginton Community Shop & Café. Each session will be run by volunteers trained by the hospice, who will be on hand to welcome and speak to attendees. It will be an informal structure, guided by the needs of the people attending.

Cake Party is the creation of Debbie Cattle from Cornelli Sugarcraft and Tracey Mann, of Tracey Mann Cakes in Longwick.

It is an evening out for anyone who loves creating and learning new things, for anyone who likes a natter and to share ideas with likeminded people and most importantly for anyone who loves cake and perhaps a glass of wine with a nibble of cake!

Unlike traditional cake decorating classes, Cake Party will be held in a relaxed pub setting, where you can purchase a drink, meet new friends, share ideas and tips and listen to music as you learn to decorate cakes to take home with you and show off your new found skills.

Hosted by Tracey and Debbie, there will be a selection of different themed Cake Party evenings to book during the year. The Society has announced that this year’s Harvest Supper will be held on Friday, 27 October. In a break from the past, it will feature a Hog Roast by King’s Farm, with all the usual condiments (stuffing, apple sauce, etc) and with vegetarian options available. It will start slightly earlier than usual – at 7:00pm – because members will be treated, before dinner, to a delightful performance by the Wendover Children’s Choir. 25 years of Arts Society Ballinger

Dr Peter Baker writes: “In August, the Arts Society Ballinger (ASB) celebrated our first 25 years of monthly meetings at the War Memorial Hall. This was appropriately focused on silver with a talk from Claire Murdoch, CEO of the Bishopsland Educational Trust, a charity dedicated to training and education in the craft of silversmithing. ASB is proud to have supported the Trust over many years and presented Claire with a cheque in support of the Trust’s work. Formalities were concluded with a delicious cream tea in the summer sunshine.

ASB returns this month with a full series of lectures for 20234. “Arts” is a wide subject and topics include music, painting, sculpture, textiles, myth, and much else. In what may well be an election year, Rupert Dickens will be talking in April 2024 on the birth of political satire. To banish the February blues, come and be entertained by Bertie Pearce in the Art of Visual Deception, with a touch of magic. If you are consider visiting Cambridge, in July Sarah Burles will be talking about Kettles Yard, the late Jim Ede’s eclectic museum which has recently been completely refurbished and is highly recommended!

Good turnout for resumed Halton House open day

Early September saw the first open day at Halton House since before the Covid lockdowns. Fine weather enabled a good turnout of more than 2,000 visitors who were able to tour the historic Rothschild mansion, which is now the RAF Halton Officer’s Mess, and they could also take

a coach across the main road to see the Trenchard Museum and the associated James McCudden Flight Heritage Centre.

RAF Halton and the Trenchard Museum have been holding their Heritage Open Days since 2007 as part of the European Open Days, which have grown from around 700 to about 5,000 sites in that time. It is thought that this is the only RAF base to take part in the programme. There was due to be an open house last year, but it was cancelled out of respect for Queen Elizabeth II who had died the previous week. So this was the first event since 2019.

Trixie Brabner, the Halton House archivist, writes: “Preparation started early in the year to open the magnificent Halton House, and part of the gardens, built by Alfred de Rothschild as his weekend party house between 1880 and 1884.

“Only the ground floor is open as the House is a residence for those officers serving at RAF Halton. Every one of the ground floor rooms had a volunteer there to give the visitor further information as required.

“There were fascinating questions from visitors, some had relatives who had served at Halton in the past and wanted to know

more about the history of RAF Halton. Lots of reminiscing, a lady who had travelled from Sheffield, another from Northampton, as well as those from the locality.

There were people of all ages from a 4-week-old baby to those in their later years. Many who vaguely knew the House was in the locality, saw the road sign, on the B4009, but had never seen it, loved the opportunity to really walk round and get the feel of a past era.”

The Trenchard Museum covers the history of RAF Halton and in particular the apprenticeship scheme that ran until 1993. The James McCudden Flight Heritage Centre explains flight as a more general subject.

Tapathon Event

The Rozelle School of Dancing is doing its bit for BBC Children in Need again this year again by participating in the nationwide Tapathon event on 19 November, to raise money and attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest number of dancers performing simultaneously. All are welcome – this is a family event that brings children, parents, relatives and friends to a local event. Pudsey Bear will also be taking part in the World Record attempt so why not go along and meet him too!

Proposed new skate park

There is a severe lack of facilities for young people in Wendover and both Wendover News and Wendover Parish Council has been keen to provide a suitable facility. A skatepark provides a place to meet, exercise and be creative as well as being a focal point for social interaction. A project to build a bespoke concrete skatepark has been under way since the previous park had to be demolished in 2019. A survey at the time showed a local preference for it to be replaced in Ashbrook Park and the Parish Council is now in a position to apply for

planning permission for the replacement. It will be a bespoke build, suitable for all wheeled sports and all ages and abilities.

EKFB writes: Over the last few months our teams have been working towards completing the construction of temporary realignments of both the A413 London Road and Ellesborough Road.

The current schedule of works is now as follows but please note these dates are subject to change:

• 23 October - 12 November – Full closure of the western section of Ellesborough Road into Wendover to complete the utility diversions and to complete the tie-in of the temporary new road alignment to the current carriageways at either end. The closures will be in operation 24 hours per day throughout the closure period.

• 30 October - 13 November - Overnight closures on Mondays to Fridays to complete the phase 1 realignment of the A413 London Road. Prior to this full closure there will be overnight lane closures to complete the advanced work. The road will be fully open during the day with road and lane closures being introduced around 8.30pm, the road will fully reopen by 5.30am.

construction of the Wendover Green Tunnel and to allow large plant and vehicle movements without impacting the road. All construction activity will take place beneath the temporary bridge that is in place.

The A413 London Road needs to be slightly realigned to the east to enable the construction of one of the piers for the Small Dean Viaduct. Next year the road will need realignment again before the permanent alignment is constructed.

Green Tunnel excavation started

Following the Environment Agency’s approval of HS2’s plan for protecting the Coombe Hill Aquifer, excavation of the Green Tunnel foundations started in August, and the position of the track is now becoming clearly visible (see photo). Excavation of the

kerbing and tie-ins to the existing carriageways are needed before the tarmac gets laid, and HS2 is still hoping that traffic will divert onto the new road later this year.

Another phase of roadworks will then start to realign the A413 “west” to enable completion of the piling works next year.

Bacombe Lane crossing

North Cutting up to Nash Lee Road will start next year, following the installation of the tanking wall to stop aquifer water pouring into the works.

Wendover HS2 Mitigation Action Group is following up assurances from HS2 about the effectiveness of its aquifer mitigation scheme and there will be regular public updates about the works.

Ellesborough Road diversion

Utility works are continuing at Ellesborough Road to divert services over the temporary Bailey bridge to enable the Green Tunnel cutting works. Underground BT and electricity cables were installed in August to replace overhead cabling . While

Nicky Cliffe writes: “We had a fantastic Finals day on Saturday 2 September. There were seven squash and racketball cups and 10 tennis cups to be decided. The weather was very kind, lots of spectators, a family atmosphere, and it was great to have the tennis and squash on the same day with a joint social in the evening. The tennis singles box league and the racketball and squash leagues are all up and running again now that the tournament has finished.

“Our squash superstar Katie Malliff is now up to number 40 in the world and leads a very exciting life, jetting round the world on the professional squash tour.”

Chiltern Miniaturists Club

Chiltern Miniaturists Club offers a double helping in October: its usual monthly meeting on the 4th, and a Saturday workshop on 7 October. At the monthly meeting, it will be making 1/24th scale Davenport writing desks, and at the start of the meeting, one of the members will be demonstrating how to build a miniature garden wall, which will lead onto... the Saturday workshop, when all will have the opportunity to work on an individual garden project, between 11 am and 4 pm. At this workshop, members will also be bringing along surplus garden modelling materials to share.

Don Knight writes: “This year marks the 120th anniversary of Wendover Bowls Club. Things have changed a bit since we moved from the area of the Shoulder of Mutton car park to Dobbins Lane. Members used to change in the tool shed and there were four sheets of corrugated iron made into a sentry box in one corner where members could ‘obtain relief.’ Yes, our club house is definitely an improvement.

“We are still having trouble with our mining crows who have now been joined by a fox. If we could persuade the fox to eat the crows it would help.”

“The outdoor season is heading to a close. The finals of all the internal competitions have been played so we know who hold the bragging rights for the year. The Ladies v Gentlemen match has also taken place, proving that the ‘Gentlemen’ do not deserve to be so named. Never mind Ladies, you did come second and your captain accepted the giant wooden spoon trophy in a most gracious manner.

“So that is it, just a few more interclub games and the Chairman v Captain match and we will move indoors. How quickly the year has flown by. In August I bemoaned the lack of sunshine, but September was too hot! Ah, British weather!”

Aylesbury Cycling UK - Leisure Rides

“Although centred around Aylesbury, our riders come from as far as High Wycombe and the rides start from Weston Turville, Watermead Aylesbury and the Bugle Horn, Stone. The leisure section of the club is launching its autumn rides which alternate weekly between Newcomer rides of around 20 miles and Easy Pace 30 miles. Both are kept at a comfortable pace for the cyclists

The new season is now underway. Training for younger age groups is on Saturday mornings from 09:00am on the John Colet 3G pitch. Some older age groups train during the week at the same location. Youth Centre

Oshemaye Egbe (Osh) joined as Youth Leader at Wendover Youth Centre at the beginning of September, replacing Pete Swinford who left at the end of the summer term.

Osh has moved from South East London, where she has been a youth support worker for over 15 years. She is passionate about helping young people to develop and flourish, saying that as a youth worker she has found joy in supporting them to reach their goals. Outside of work, Osh enjoys playing basketball, music, singing and spending time with family.

With the summer holidays over, Wendover Youth Centre has returned to its full weekly schedule. It offers a range of activities for school years 5-13, and all young people are welcome to join the sessions at any point in the term.

Rebecca Kinnarney writes: “What a successful 2022/2023 season for Wendover Choral Society! St. Mary’s Church was packed for both the Messiah in December and for the eclectic Springtime Celebration concert in May. The choir were delighted to be joined for this concert by acclaimed tenor, Arnando Mukerjee, by the superb organist of Rochester Cathedral, Adrian

Bawtree, and by the wonderful musicians of Berkeley Brass and the Jazz Trio. The choir is incredibly grateful to the people of Wendover for their support. The church was certainly swinging!

“There is so much more to look forward to this season, too. In September, rehearsals began for the annual December concert when the choir will be performing Handel’s Utrecht Te Deum and Jubilate, written to celebrate the Peace of Utrecht in 1713. There will also be incidental music from Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, some of which will be very familiar! The choir will once again be joined by the very talented musicians of the Oxford Sinfonia and again this looks like being a thoroughly rousing concert to start your Christmas celebrations. The choir looks forward to seeing as many people as possible at the concert on 2 December.

“However, and more importantly, the choir would love to welcome anyone who would like to have a go at singing along with them. Weekly rehearsals began on Thursday 7 September – 7.45pm in St. Mary’s Church. All are very very welcome. Do come along and enjoy the singing, the tea and biscuits and the chatting with new friends!”

Courses at Wendover Swimming Pool Wendover Swimming Pool is considering running a lifesaving (NRASTC) course during the weekend of 7 & 8 October. For this course, due to pool operational requirements, the minimum age is 18.

The Wendover Swimming Pool will pay for the courses, provided individuals commit to covering at least one session per week for two years (the duration of the qualification).

Rotary in Wendover and District is once again organising Duck Races along Heron Stream. This year's date is Sunday 29 October, whatever the weather!

The classic duck race (£2 per duck) will see up to 400 small yellow plastic ducks propelled by the Heron Stream current, with three winners announced.

Ducks for the Business Race will cost £15. There is a discount to £10 if you bought a duck last year. That offer applies again this year. Business Ducks are double the size of those competing in the classic duck race and businesses are invited to decorate their duck as they see fit (using environmentally friendly paints).

Adapting to Climate Change: Water

Although it may not be at the forefront of people’s minds at the moment, the effects of climate change are being experienced even in Britain with storms, flooding, intense rainfall and unusual droughts.

As we’ve seen this year and last, intense heat and drought have led to devastating wildfires in several countries and the possibilities of food crop shortages. Reports of sewage discharges into rivers and projected increases in water charges have highlighted the increasing importance of adapting to climate changes, including conserving water. It seems inconceivable that water that is expensively pumped out of the Chilterns’ chalk, filtered, purified and delivered through our taps, is then used to water gardens.

However, there are several ways we can use

water more sustainably. One approach is to forget the notion of the verdant, weed-free green lawn and consider turning it over to wildflowers or planting a cottage garden.

Finally, the large rain capture surfaces of roofs can store a great deal in water butts – and not just a single one but a string of connected butts that can provide water for those vegetables, flowers and pond topups that need water at crucial times. Even in Wendover, we will need to adapt to a changing climate.

Bucks Scouts return from grand tour of Europe

“Scouts can still enjoy all the traditional activities that you associate with the movement” said Richard Byford, former Group Scout Leader in Wendover (and now a volunteer with Wendover News). “But Scouting has moved on in leaps and bounds over recent years and has developed a programme of activities tailored to the interests of children and young adults both now and in the future.”

This year, accompanied by highly trained volunteer leaders, a large mixed unit of scouts and explorer scouts from Buckinghamshire travelled to South Korea for a World Jamboree. A similar 46-strong group went on an alternative 23 day ‘Grand Tour’ (GT23) backpacking from Zagreb to the fjords of Norway.

Next month, we hope to be reporting on the Jamboree, but in the meantime, here is a report of GT23, from Wendover Explorer Scout, Thomas Harrington:

During the tour – led by Paul Wilson – we endured heatwaves, national emergencies, torrential storms and public transport challenges, camping and using hostels over summer. Our first stop was Zagreb, capital of Croatia. During our short stay there, we discovered the city: the colourful roof of St Mark’s Church, the many different museums and Grič Tunnel through the hill. Our time there required us to acclimatise to the sweltering temperatures of the heatwave whilst finding our way around using the iconic tram and public transport systems typical of central Europe.

On the way to our next destination, we stopped off for a day in Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, where we explored the Dragon Bridge and its impressive sculptures. A scenic coach ride took us on to Lake Bohinj, high up in the mountains, one of the most picturesque locations of our trip. Here, we camped by the lake for an eventful week, where we canoed on the pristine blue waters and biked through the small surrounding villages.

During the days that we were camped there, Slovenia was struck by the worst natural disaster in its history. More than 275 mm of rain fell in just 48 hours, leading to seven fatalities throughout the country. The nearest town to us was flooded.

We struggled to keep our gear dry in

our tents and had to boil all our water for safety. Despite all this, we managed to take the Bohinj cable car up the mountain to see the stunning view of the surrounding mountains and lakes and enjoy the camaraderie of local Slovenian Scouts at the campground. The journey on to Zellhof in Austria took in a short detour to Trieste, in Italy.

In Zellhof, we stayed at a camp with scouts from Italy, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, and other UK groups. This was a great chance to meet with other international scouts, testing our language skills and ability to make friends. We are still in contact with many of the people we met here.

Taking another detour to Hallstatt, Austria, we explored the oldest salt mine in the world, giving us a view of the ancient mining history, including the local ice caves. We also had an excursion to Salzburg in Austria, where we had a tour of the old castle with views over the city and the German border beyond.

Our penultimate destination was Prague, in Czechia/Czech Republic, where we experienced the great culture and history of the city through an evening Ghost tour and a river cruise tour of its architectural treasures. A small group of us visited the ballet, which was absolutely unforgettable and gave us a taste of the culture surrounding the place. Finally, we jumped to Oslo in Norway. Here, we island hopped in the Oslo Fjord though a beautiful Scandinavian summer landscape, visited some maritime and nordic museums and rode a zipline down the famous Norwegian Olympic ski jump at the Holmenkollen!

We travelled home, all in one piece and with experiences to remember forever.

Tribute: Roy Collins

Roy was a whizz with cars. His customers trusted him completely which is why they came back to him for help time and time again. His family and friends are still in shock that he was taken from us so unexpectedly but we are all so glad that he spent his time fully with us.

The son of Barry Collins, together they ran associated businesses at Red Rose Garage, Aylesbury Road, Wendover, HP22 6LB: ‘Barry’s shop, Wendover Motor Spares and Roy’s workshop, Red Rose Garage’… a proper family endeavour, drawing in others to the extended family fold. Even before they set up their business there, the place had history, see www.wendovernews. co.uk/news/william-lancaster-red-rosegarage. Roy was determined to continue the colourful stories. He sported a multicoloured mohican when he arrived. His father exuded a reassuring combination of wisdom and Roy added the panache.

Roy was a Buckinghamshire boy, born in the Royal Bucks Hospital, not without difficulty. Like many children, he loved playing with cars but his were taken apart, to see how they worked, and given a respray. Airfix kits kept him busy for hours and helped to build and satisfy his curiosity.

Family holidays were never dull: his father taught him well in ways to bring joy to the

world… By taping over the keyholes, piling rubbish bins up outside people’s chalet doorways, and making trick phone calls. Joke shops were irresistible and provided the resources necessary to brighten the lives of those round him. As soon as he could take his driving test, he did. He passed. And the very next day, while enthusiastically driving his mini, managed to write it off.

It was obvious that Roy would work with cars, and given the strong bond between him and his Dad, they inevitably ended up working together. Just like his father, Roy had a generous heart and always went the extra mile to help others when he could.

Outside work, Roy was not one to sit in front of the telly - he needed to be outside in the fresh air, ideally doing something physical, and he threw himself into whatever it

was at the time: paddleboarding, jetskiing, surfing, drag racing or kite surfing.

But he made time for more relaxing pursuits too - he was in the bowling league with sister Julie. He loved fishing. His painting was skilful - airbrushed jackets and guitars being a speciality. He squeezed more into his 55 years than others manage in a longer lifetime.

Whatever Roy did, he tried his best… and although he was imperfect, like all of us, he leaves a legacy of affection, joy, respect, generosity, and mischievous fun; …memories to sustain us, as we know that the world is a poorer place without him.

Roy's family would like to thank all the friends and neighbours who lined Aylesbury Road on 30 August. The cortège was an amazing line up of motor bikes and cars, including friends from drag racing days, an astonishing sight to see. They followed him from Red Rose Garage in Aylesbury Road all the way to Bierton Crematorium. Everyone thought it was a most fitting send off.

On 13 September Lindengate celebrated its 10th anniversary with a reception for key stakeholders and supporters.

During the reception Countess Howe, the Lord-Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, opened the new Apothecary Garden. This was designed by Andy Grant and created by Lindengate staff, volunteers and people on their programmes, funded by sponsorships from the Mobs Memorial Trust and Ryklow Charitable Trust.

The pond, the trees (including Taxus baccata, yew, and Parrotia persica, Persian ironwood), and the pergola were donated

from the 2022 Hampton Court Silver winning, Macmillan Legacy Garden: Gift the Future, designed by Sean Pritchard.

Families fundraise for Wendover Dementia Support

In a remarkable display of dedication and community spirit, three families have raised significant funds for Wendover Dementia Support, underscoring the power of collective action in the battle against dementia.

Rosie Rance, (photo right) the daughter of one of WDS’ visitors, braved 25 degree heat to run 13 miles, impressively raising over £2,400. Julie Smith, the daughter of one of the volunteers, conquered the Farnham Pilgrim Trail marathon in scorching 29 degree heat, generating over £1,600 in donations.

The Parsons family united their efforts to participate in Trek 26 and the London Marathon, raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Modestly named “The Outdoor Space,” the new structure provides a large open-sided covered area for working and meeting, that more than doubles the size of the original adjacent metal cabin (nicknamed “The Hog”).

All the construction work was handled by Shed members, with no outside help, starting with CAD design and a 3D printed model prototype by Shed member Dave Walls. The main structure is made from heavy wood beams, where the team learned to make traditional mortise and tenon joints, using big chisels, mallets and lots of welly.

Wendover Shed is a community workspace where practicallyminded people are able to meet, work on joint projects, and share ideas and experience. It’s particularly aimed at people who may feel isolated and out of touch with others. Membership is £15 per year. Potential members can just turn up at regular meetings at The Shed on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, with times posted online here: www.wendovershed.org.uk/opening-times.

Ian Brierly has returned to Buckinghamshire as the new head teacher of John Colet school. In his early days as a teacher he had a spell in Lord Grey School (as it was then called) in Bletchley, but more recently he was a head teacher in Beeston, Nottingham. He moved to Burton on Trent, Staffordshire, where his students faced the challenge of deprivation. This offered a fully multicultural experience where an established South Asian community formed a vibrant community with incomers with Eastern European backgrounds.

As soon as Ian arrived for the job interview he says he recognised the strengths of the John Colet school. The development of school buildings has continued for several years. The governors had a new chair; the leadership team was ambitious, energetic and very impressive; a new deputy was in place. This was a moment to be seized, he felt.

As he walked around the school on interview day, the polite attitude of the students impressed him. These students were used to being consulted. They could easily converse

with an unknown adult. This was a friendly school with an excellent ethos underpinning its values.

There were no surprises for him, or the staff, that even in this year when the marking had returned to pre-Covid standards the GCSE results were the best ever, and the A-level grades remained strong. The notorious gender gap was diminished as the boys are catching up fast. Clearly, these are excellent trends which the entire staff wish to continue. John Colet School is already over-subscribed and Ian Brierly wants enthusiastic students to continue to knock on a door which has much to offer to all. He wants to take on the challenge

of selection and create a first choice positive learning community that welcomes students of all abilities and taps into the potential and talent of the local community, reflecting its modern, diverse and inclusive society.

From the first day of term (remember the heat of that record-breaking hot week in September?), Ian impressed on his students that his emphasis was on mind, body and spirit. Education will always impinge most upon the mind. It is incumbent on everyone to keep our bodies in good shape. Spirit is the foundation of developing character. These three qualities are the foundation of a successful life, he believes. Ian has a holistic view of the world and wants to empower young people. They are our future. His job is to inspire, listen and to make an impact, he says.

Watch this school. It’s where the future is made. The young people of Wendover have a head teacher who will lead them along a path of genuine personal development.

Wendover Parish CouncilView from the Clock Tower

As the construction of HS2 continues there are many issues for the Parish, but also maybe some opportunities.

We continue to fight to preserve the water supply to the canal, local streams, and the Hampden Pond when the aquifer is cut through. We are concerned about noise, dust, and traffic. There is also the question of what happens to the land when it is returned by HS2 to the local community. The current landowners will get first refusal, but could some land become community assets?

With all these issues and questions in mind, Wendover Parish Council is going to hold a public meeting on HS2 to update the community on the current issues, brief on what the Parish Council is doing to mitigate the issues and then seek ideas and suggestions, particularly for the land that gets released back.

Works on the Hampden Pond have been progressing with funding from HS2. The council has been seeking advice on improvements that can be made to keep the pond a vibrant mix between an area for both people and wildlife, and this project is the result. The lilies are taking over and strangling the pond and so had to be removed at the root and dug out to reduce

their spread. Works were done to the bank to enhance visitor safety and to prevent further loss of soil into the pond preserving the plants and trees around the bank.

The submission was focused on the Parish Council and therefore will not cover some of big issues that everyone faced during lockdown, concerning access to medical help, home schooling and isolation being issues for many. Finally, work was done on the trees to ensure they are safe and healthy. We will not currently be restocking for fishing but there are fish in the pond. As there are fluctuating water levels and water quality, it is not in our immediate plans to restock the pond. We also have a specific longer-term management plan to maintain that balance between visitors and nature.

We know people have been surprised at the cost, but this work is specialist and expensive and we have had multiple quotes.

Thankfully the grant from HS2 has made it possible. This ends a programme of work at the pond started a few years ago and we now hope that nature will be able to thrive, and the pond will continue to be a beautiful asset for Wendover.
