New opportunities at Wendover News
For over thirty years, this magazine has been distributed free to households in Wendover and the surrounding area. Its circulation now stands at 5000. It has been an important link to the community for many of our readers. In some cases, it has been a lifeline. It has also witnessed the first steps of many small businesses and start-ups who are still reaching out to their customers via adverts in this issue.
Now, a new chapter begins: Wendover News is changing from being a commercial company, to a social enterprise. Our first step is to recruit volunteers to be Directors of the new Community Interest Company (CIC) that is being set up. We need a small number of enthusiastic volunteer directors to help make things happen. Experience as a business leader would be ideal but we would like to incorporate new ideas so mentoring could be given to suitable candidates.
Who do you know who could do this?
Community ownership will mean that Wendover News will be able to do even more.
So whether you're an advertiser, from a local organisation, a business owner, or a reader if you are interested in helping to shape what that might look like, please let us know. The most valuable commodity you can offer is yourself.
Opportunities below Board level include helping to collect news and see your work published, develop our social media platforms as well as our website https://www. wendovernews.co.uk/. We need people who enjoy the camaraderie of working together as a team. This could be a stepping stone into a first or new career, work experience or the way back into work again. You could take on the role of mentor sharing your knowledge. Our experienced part time employees will be there to help and the time commitment could only involve the equivalent of a day or two a month (more initially).
If you would like to become involved and evolve what the magazine will look like and how it serves its community, or know someone who does, please contact jane@ wendovernews.co.uk, by Monday 6 March

A Positive Individual Approach
It is now nearly 4 years since Wendover Dementia support was founded by retired GP Dr Pippa Moreton. She identified a very real need in the community for support and advice for ‘visitors’ and their families following diagnosis.
Since those early days we have developed a system of an initial assessment visit to the home before they come to the Monday Club. That way we can listen to each individual story and understand how we can best help.
Our happy dementia family has now grown to almost 70 including partners, carers, and others who live alone. We are constantly learning, reviewing and adapting. Volunteer training and support are very important to us all in this hugely rewarding role.
Our aim at the Monday Club has always been to make everyone who attends feel
accepted and cared for. We want them to experience enjoyment, stimulation and FUN through joint activities and conversation. At the same time, we work at boosting self esteem and confidence.
After our initial home assessment we quickly learn what an interesting and important life they have lived before diagnosis, and although for many these things are now in the past, we try to concentrate on what they CAN still do and enjoy, and not what they’ve lost.
Reassurance and affirmation, boosting self-esteem and preserving dignity, active listening and identifying when more help is needed, are all vital ingredients of what WDS is offering.

Grammy award-winning Jules Buckley returns to Aylesbury to lead former students’ tribute concert in memory of inspirational bandleader and mentor Nick Care
Nick Care’s Big Band Paean – Aylesbury Waterside Theatre, Sunday 5 March, 6pm
Tickets £18 / £11.75 conc.
The double Grammy award-winning Jules Buckley (below, left) makes a return to his hometown Aylesbury to join more than 100 former students of the late Nick Care (below, right) – the inspirational and international award-winning bandleader, musician and educator of Aylesbury Music Centre for 30 years – for a spectacular tribute concert in his memory at the Waterside Theatre on Sunday 5 March at 6pm, tickets on sale now on www. atgtickets.com or telephone 0844 871 7615.
The concert is being produced by Nick’s widow, Kathy Gifford, and all proceeds will go to the Motor Neurone Disease Association to help them support others like they did Nick, and to fund research leading to new understanding and treatments and help bring a cure for MND closer.
Nick Care was instrumental in Aylesbury becoming known as a centre for musical excellence and over 100 musicians will perform to honour their much-loved, legendary Aylesbury Vale teacher and inspirational band leader. Almost all the musicians played in Nick’s award-winning bands while at school. Years and decades on they are testament to Nick’s life-changing influence and lasting enrichment of hundreds of young lives.
A unique place for family, friends, visitors to experience Wendover
Nick Care died in 2020 aged 62 with Motor Neurone Disease and is widely accredited as putting Aylesbury on the map as a centre for musical excellence. Many of his former students are now professional musicians and the big band put together for this extra special one-off evening will be led by former student and mentee Jules Buckley.
Aylesbury born, Grammy award-winning curator, conductor, orchestrator, composer and hugely respected musical innovator Jules Buckley played in Nick’s bands from the age of 9 to 18. He now has a staggering discography of over 70 albums, and collaborates with international musical legends such as Paul Weller, Chaka Khan, Robbie Williams, Stormzy, Arctic Monkeys, Quincy Jones, Tori Amos and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Jules, who flies from his home in Berlin to conduct this concert, said: “Nick was a true guru – a master who could unlock and present to me the secrets of the musical world, absolutely without ego, and with a selfless generosity that is beyond measure.”
Five of Nick’s bands, spanning ages 10 to 18, won forty national and international awards. His Aylesbury Music Centre Dance Band won the BBC Big Band competition four times. Nick’s bands performed live on BBC Blue Peter seven times and internationally at Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals five times. They also played Buckingham Palace, The Royal Albert Hall, London Palladium, BBC Proms in the Park. Some youngsters performed in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, while Nick taught Warwick Davis conducting. Guest soloists with Nick’s bands included Sir John Dankworth, Georgie Fame, Julian Joseph and Django Bates.
On the night, there will be a thrilling, high-energy, swinging Big Band, a beautiful brass ensemble and lively music for expanded Brass Band. Drawn from four centuries, the programme includes fun and familiar music: Buddy Rich’s arrangement of West Side Story, Sing Sing Sing, and works by Django Bates, William Byrd and three of Nick’s own dramatic compositions.
Around a third of Nick’s band alumni playing on the night now perform professionally, including Mark Armstrong, Professor of Jazz at the Royal College of Music and Artistic Director of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Expected guests include Mark Nightingale on trombone (Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Madonna) and Mike Lovatt on trumpet (Aretha Franklin, Seth MacFarlane, Gary Barlow).

Slow progress locally
There was not much visible progress from HS2 in February, with the highlights being the start of installation of the temporary bridge over the cutting for the Ellesborough Road diversion. (below left) There has also been a procession of lorries delivering hardcore and a massive stockpile has been created close to Folly Bridge. (below right). Our understanding is that the Environment Agency are still not happy about the potential impact on the Coombe Hill Aquifer and are not permitting any significant excavation of the Green Tunnel cutting.
summer, and it remains to be seen if the Euston terminus will actually be built. While we think the section of the line past Wendover will be completed, the frequency of trains will need to be reduced due to the limited number of platforms planned at Old Oak Common. Lord Berkeley (who has criticised the project for many years) has advocated that HS2 train speeds are reduced to 125 mph, and investment diverted to Northern railway projects.

HS2 under review
There have been press reports that the DfT are concerned about the overall HS2 costs, with “Project Silverlight” looking for “savings through a combination of delays and cuts in the first phase of the project”. Also “Operation Blue Diamond” is looking at “cost-cutting across the entire HS2 project”. Final decisions are expected in the
Sustrans have reported that funding has been received from the Chilterns HS2 AONB Review Group to extend the cycleway north from Great Missenden to Dunsmore Lane this summer. This should then connect with HS2 plans to build a cycleway under the Small Dean Viaduct; and also along the top of the Wendover Green Tunnel. That should eventually connect Great Missenden to Waddesdon as part of the National Cycle Network.

Thanks for making your opinions known about the future of the old Cricket Ground site behind Ellesborough Road. 87% of the responses favour

HS2 Construction in Wendover - Update
We are approaching the start of our earthworks season for 2023. During March to November our earthworks team make the most of the predominantly drier and warmer weather to complete a number of activities including topsoil stripping, excavating and transportation of material.
As we approach springtime and longer daylight hours, we will also be introducing longer working hours on some of our sites in order to maximise the use of daylight hours and milder weather.
Earthworks are due to commence in March and will continue to late 2023. Once consent has been granted, we will have extended hours of working between 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 5pm on Saturdays. These works will have noise and vibration monitoring in place but are not expected to exceed any environmental allowances throughout the duration.
We will also be hosting an Open Doors event in your area where students aged between 14 and 19 have been invited to come to see our Wendover Dean Viaduct site on 13, 14 and 16 March. The students will see how our construction team operate and how the viaduct will look against the landscape when completed, a great opportunity for any young people interested in construction. If you would like more information, then please see www.opendoors.construction to sign up!
To stay informed of our works don’t forget to register for email updates on the HS2 website which gives you a choice of how you would like to receive information from us. To find out more, visit your community website at www.hs2.org.uk/in-your-area/. If you have a question about HS2 or our works, please contact our HS2 Helpdesk team on 08081 434 434 or email hs2enquiries@hs2.org.uk

Fast Fashion
As we step into spring, many of us will be thinking of having a clear out and getting out to the shops to buy new clothes for the summer ahead. According to the United Nations Alliance for Sustainable Fashion, the average consumer purchases 60% more clothes than they did 15 years ago.
This all adds up to two tonnes of clothing being purchased every minute in the UK, generating 50 tonnes of carbon emissions which is the equivalent to driving a car 162,000 miles. It’s no wonder that the fashion industry contributes 10% of global emissions and 20% of global wastewater. As the global population continues to rise, there is no sign of this trend slowing down. By 2030, global fashion consumption is projected to rise by 63% to 102 million tons which is equivalent to 500 billion additional t-shirts.
Like most consumer goods, the damage doesn’t end with the production of clothes.
Only 1% of the materials used to produce clothing is recycled into new clothing at the end of its life. In addition, half a million tons of plastic microfibers are dumped into the ocean every year which equates to around 50 billion plastic bottles.
Reducing the impact of fast fashion is a growing trend with many people buying vintage and second-hand clothing from charity shops or online. So if you are clearing out this spring, why not take any unwanted items to a charity shop for someone else to enjoy
In the UK, we buy more clothes per person than any other country in Europe. Two further ways that everyone can reduce carbon emissions from fast fashion include extending the average life of clothes by just nine months, saving £ 5 billion in resources and doubling the number of times each garment is worn would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 44%.

Thermal cork insulation offers many benefits and is considered a rewarding alternative to painting, rendering or insulating your home. Homeowners often overlook the importance of insulation, but it can make a huge difference in your home's energy efficiency and yearly savings. Exterior thermal cork insulation works especially well to make your home a healthy and comfortable living space while reducing energy bills.
Exterior thermal cork insulation is a great option for keeping your home sustainably insulated. It is a natural, eco-friendly material that is easy to install and offers excellent insulation performance. Unlike traditional insulation that is rolled or batted, this type of insulation is sprayapplied directly onto render or brickwork. The photos show a home in Wendover which Universal Painters recently insulated with thermal cork.
Unlike some other insulation materials, thermal cork insulation retains heat and cool air very well,
giving you outstanding all-season comfort. It also helps to reduce sound transmission. It is fireproof, rot and bug resistant, and also acts as an air barrier to keep out allergens, dust, and pollutants.
Thermal cork insulation also offers financial benefits. It helps to reduce energy costs significantly, often lowering your utility bills by as much as 31% percent. It can increase your home’s market value as more and more people are attracted to homes with energy-efficient features.
Installing thermal cork insulation is generally quicker and easier than other types of insulation material. It is also non-toxic and doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals or materials, making it
safe to use. It is a completely sustainable and eco-friendly building material.
Here at Universal Painters we are rendering, painting and insulation specialists serving Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and the surrounding areas. We are a family-run business with a reputation for high quality work and unrivalled personal service. We provide both internal and external insulation, improving your home's thermal barrier. A full repair service is included to ensure your property is protected prior to any works carried out.
With over 30 years experience and knowledge, we are on-hand to deliver a professional insulation service and protect your home. We know what matters to you; competitive pricing, quality workmanship, and a trusted team. We offer up to 25 years' product warranty. Contact us today and see how our solutions can not only increase the look of your home, but provide you with great, lasting benefits.

Pop-Up Art Weekend returns to Wendover
The Pop-Up Art Weekend is returning to Wendover on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 March as the Chilterns MS Centre on the Princess Mary Gate Estate transforms from an MS Therapy Centre to one of the best art exhibitions in the area. Once again the event will be sponsored by the Clare Foundation who do so much for local charities across the county.
The free-to-attend Pop-Up Art Weekend (see advert front page) is a sale and exhibition showcasing a variety of paintings, sculptures, jewellery, drawings, ceramic and other forms of art from local artists. If that doesn’t whet your appetite there will also be a café serving some of the finest cakes in the area. Over the years the event has raised close to £150,000 for the Centre.
“The Clare Foundation is delighted to be able to support the Pop-Up Art Weekend and the Chilterns MS Centre by sponsoring this event,” said Martin Gallagher, Chief Executive of the Clare Foundation. “It is always an enjoyable exhibition
with wonderful art on display from extremely talented local artists. It is a great fundraiser for the Centre which highlights so much great work in the community.”
“This is one of our favourite events of the year as it gives people a chance to see (and buy) some exceptional pieces of art, and it also gives us an opportunity to show people a little of what we do at the Centre and the support we offer people,” said Stella Kubale, Head of Fundraising at the Chilterns MS Centre. “If you've never been before then we'd really urge you to come along, if anything for the delicious cake. If you have been before, we look forward to welcoming you back.”
When not hosting art exhibitions, the Chilterns MS Centre provides a range of treatments and services to people with MS in the local area as well as their carers. More recently the centre has opened up its services to people with Parkinson’s disease and stroke survivors. In total the Centre supports over 650 people.

Friends of St Mary's
The Friends of St Mary’s Wendover AGM is at St Mary’s Church on Sunday, 26 March, at 12.15pm. Wine and light refreshments provided.
This charity, no 104163, was formed in 1993, for those with an interest in the oldest building in Wendover, with the largest seating capacity. It has accepted subscriptions and given grants of nearly £300,000 towards repairs of the church over the last 30 years. To ensure its continuation it needs a new generation of supporters. It is not subsidising the worship in the church as they cover routine maintenance, but the building is over 800 years old and is in increased demand as a venue by the community of Wendover.
Road Farm Countryways
Extraordinary volunteers wanted to help at Countryways with its animals and outdoor learning proposition
Could it be you?
Countryways CIC, based at Road Farm in Great Missenden, is a local notfor-profit community enterprise which offers care farming interventions for young people and those vulnerable or facing life challenges. Currently Countryways has some fabulous people to support them, but the growing need means they are seeking more help.
They have two important part time volunteering positions, ideally for someone local:
Outdoor Learning Liaison Champion (Approx. 2 hours/week)
Help expand Countryways' offering to local schools and special interest
groups. Countryways encourages outdoor learning and links the curriculum with the seasons, landscape, animals and nature. A number of local schools and Scout groups have already visited the care farm for outdoor learning sessions with great success. There is an opportunity for more schools and other groups to visit, but they need an Outdoor Learning Liaison Champion to help in coordinating these visits, gather feedback and widen the programme's reach.
Time required: Approximately 2 hours per week and if available, but not essential, more time to help during the visits. 6 months minimum commitment and 18 years+ please. DBS checks may be required.
Based: Home and at Countryways, at Road Farm in Great Missenden.
Livestock Champion (Approx. 4 hours)
To specifically be able to help with the evening livestock routine. Must have own transport and be respectful and competent with animals (especially goats and donkeys).
Time required: 4 hours per week over 4 days from 4pm. Could suit a competent BCA Animal management or Agri student or someone who has livestock experience. DBS checks may be required.
Based: Countryways, at Road Farm in Great Missenden.
If you are interested in finding out more about either volunteering opportunity, please do get in contact with the team at Countryways at vols. rfcountryways@gmail.com with your details.
Celebrate and remember loved ones with Forever ForgetMe-Nots at Waddesdon Manor
Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity has partnered with the magnificent Waddesdon Manor to launch a very special Forever Flowers event to celebrate and remember loved ones this spring.
A stunning, temporary display of 1,000 bespoke metal Forget-Me-Not flowers will be installed in the Aviary Gardens at Waddesdon Manor, near Aylesbury in April. Each flower will represent the life, love and memories of a loved one.
The charity is offering you the opportunity to be a part of this event by dedicating one of these limited Forever Forget-Me-Nots, which also includes an invitation to a private viewing of the display on Monday 17 April whilst the grounds are closed to the public. The Forever Forget-MeNots installation will then remain on display to the public for two weeks. Once the installation is removed, those who have dedicated a flower will be able to take it home to display as a forever keepsake.
By dedicating a Forever Forget-Me-Not you will be helping the charity to provide excellent local hospice care and be there for more patients and families across Buckinghamshire and its borders.
To dedicate a Forever Forget-Me-Not visit https://www.fnhospice.org.uk/ foreverflowers or call 01296 429975 for more information.

Wendover Canal Trust Photo Competition Winners Announced
Robbie Cumming, tv personality, vlogger and patron of the Wendover Canal Trust (WCT) has chosen the three winners of the Trust’s photography competition.
The competition was launched to entice people to the Wendover Canal during the autumn and winter. The Trust invited pictures that capture the different scenes of the Wendover Canal whether wildlife, the landscapes or people using the canal and towpath.
Said Robbie: “It was difficult to single out winners but I liked the one I chose first because it captures the canal from a slightly unfamiliar angle which makes it stand out. It’s also crisply edited to enhance the detail in the icy scene. Well done to all, though. There were some excellent submissions.”
The winner of the competition with a £100 prize is Alun Morgan from Princes Risborough; second is Charlotte Borrill
Wendover Canal Trust Update, Spring 2023
from Linslade, who wins £50 and third place with a £25 prize goes to Stephen Smith of Watford.
Pictures submitted for the competition may well be included in WCT publications and the Trust is most grateful to the nearly 40 photographers who entered.
WCT Working Party - February 2023
Between 3 and 10 February, in a ‘first’ for Wendover Canal Trust, its volunteers constructed a trial length of towpath at Little Tring, funded by Chilterns Conservation Board and Herts County Council, in order to demonstrate the feasibility and cost of their carrying out this work.
It was a busy week for Wendover Canal Trust’s volunteers who also carried out vegetation clearance along the towpath between Wendover and Halton (photos, right). This is another ‘first’ for WCT, as this work would generally be carried out by the owners, Canal & River Trust (CRT). The vegetation work is a necessary first step before this stretch’s upgrade, which will then be able to take place in the spring / summer. The exact distance to be upgraded is expected to be confirmed by CRT by March.

Make the most of spring on local nature reserves
Now the worst of the winter weather is past us, let's think about giving a helping hand on any of the Wildlife Trust reserves near Wendover. College Lake is always keen to have more help with visitors at the outdoor welcome desk or inside the Visitor Centre. Note that the reserve will be open on all the bank holiday Mondays coming up but closed on other Mondays. At Dancersend, Weston Turville and Bacombe Hill you can get stuck in to practical conservation work. In all cases please register your interest with volunteering@bbowt.org.uk to find out more.
The final talk of the winter season is at Great Missenden Memorial Centre, HP16 9AE on Tuesday 21 March when Brian Eversham, CEO of the Beds, Cambs and Northants Wildlife Trust will tell us about the impact of Climate Change on local wildlife. Doors open at 7pm, admission is £5 including refreshments and all are welcome. Find more details of all activities and reserve locations at bbowt.org.uk

Rob Butler, MP
It has been a busy return to Westminster for MPs, with important legislation coming before Parliament over the last few weeks. I’ve already had several opportunities to speak with Government ministers about pressing local and national issues that need action in 2023, including reducing traffic congestion, getting better access to GPs, and growing our local economy.
As I wrote in my last article, as a nation, we continue to face many serious challenges. The rise in the cost of living is understandably uppermost in many people’s minds, and I’m pleased that Government help is available to those who need it. Details can be found online.
My office continues to have extensive engagement with HS2 on issues affecting Wendover. Just before the Christmas break, I met Sir Mark Worthington and Lord Jackson, the HS2 construction and residents’ commissioners, and outlined my frustration with HS2 Ltd’s lack of serious, meaningful engagement on mitigation for the village.
I stressed this again when I met senior HS2 Ltd representatives in the House of Commons in January. I told them bluntly that the concerns of the local community must be listened to and,
when HS2 or its contractors can't act, it is essential that detailed reasons are given. Too often we are left in limbo, with half answers provided to legitimate questions; this must stop.
Concerns over the threat to the aquifer remain, and I have asked the Environment Agency for a meeting to discuss the regulatory duty to ensure our natural environment is protected, and that the risk to the Stoke Brook and Weston Turville SSSI is reduced. I am also scheduled to meet the new Rail Minister, Huw Merriman, in the coming weeks, and I will be putting this to him in person.
As usual, I've been visiting many Buckinghamshire organisations in recent weeks: highlights have included Aylesbury fire station, the newlyreopened Bledlow Household Recycling Centre and Aylesbury Life Skills Centre. I’ve also been knocking on doors around the constituency to hear people’s views about the issues that matter most: this really helps me ensure I can raise the appropriate topics in Parliament – whether on the floor of the House of Commons, in committees, or face to face with ministers.
If you would like to raise any issues with me, you can contact me at rob.butler.mp@parliament.uk

Wendover Shed is a community project to set up a shared space where people can meet to create and share practical projects, with access to working facilities, tools, and each other's help and experience. The goal is to promote health and well-being through social interaction and practical activities.
Our starter shed (above) will be a Groundhog Welfare Container, kindly donated by GE HealthCare, from the decommissioning of The Grove Centre site in Amersham. The metal unit is approximately 9m x 2.5m and is split into two sections, a workshop and a kitchen. It may need a lick of paint, but it is structurally sound, just in need of a bit of TLC.
Thanks to Wendover Parish Council, our Groundhog container has a home near the allotments on Hogtrough Lane. Our shed will be next to the existing wooden shack being used to collect water for the allotments. This shack may be
an interesting future project. It's basically a shed, after all. We have opportunities for many types of shed members, known as “Shedders”. Some might be looking to join our practical make and mend sessions or simply meet up for a coffee and a natter. Some might want to help us paint our new shed or help us with a small garden outside. Alternatively, some may be looking to get more involved as a volunteer, helper or sponsor to support our activities.
We hope to have our shed in place by the end of February and plan an Open Day in early March. Watch our social media for updates.

Local Face: Joan Metcalfe
Joan is a proud Yorkshire woman who lived in the Bradford area until she was 96. How did she end up in Wendover? Her niece realised that looking after her house was becoming too much for Joan. The first potential new residence they looked at was Abbeyfield House in Dobbins Lane. She met a resident, Gladys Evans (Local Face January 2019), who said she’d been living there happily for 14 years. That was a good enough recommendation for Joan and here she is!
Joan is very pleased to have family nearby through her niece who lives in Aston Clinton. Next generation down includes Joan’s great niece now in Stone and great nephew in Lionel Avenue. They also have their own children, another generation to support her. It was quite a gathering at Abbeyfield House on 26 January to celebrate Joan’s 103rd birthday! The last time they were able to celebrate had been in 2020 when Joan was 100! Abbeyfield residents also joined in the fun. As well as birthday tea, prosecco was available and, naturally, both sponge and fruit cake. Joan succeeded in blowing out her candles with aplomb as everyone sang “Happy Birthday”. Joan also led the party in a rousing rendition of “On Ilkla Moor Baht 'At”, giving lessons on correct pronunciation.
Joan came from a family with its own tragedy: the death of her mother when she was only 9 and her little sister Margaret was only 4. This meant that a lot of domestic responsibility fell to her as the older daughter and her father insisted that she left school at 14 even though she had passed the exam and attended the local Grammar School. She started as a reacher in nearby Saltaire Mill. This involved "reaching through" to put threads (up to 4,000) on hooks as the men set up the heavy wooden looms.
They used high quality worsted yarn which was woven into luxurious wool cloth mostly for bespoke tailoring. After about a fortnight, Joan had learned this part of the job and was able to start earning, piecework with minutes only counted when the loom was working.
By 1941 Joan had already met Albert but he had been conscripted into the army so they married and had a 2 day honeymoon in Morecambe. Most of war-time, she worked in munitions as a welder. Albert was a bombardier. Their marriage lasted 64 years even though in late middle age he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and required a special diet and eventually nursing, both depending on Joan always learning new skills.
After the war Joan became a pattern weaver and eventually trained others in this skill. She went on to be given the responsibility of translating patterns into weaving, often making modifications to speed up the weaving by making the design slightly simpler without noticeable diminution in complexity. Margaret's daughter, a nurse, married an RAF man who had a long spell teaching at Halton which is how that part of the family came to live in these parts.

Joan learned to drive at 48 and her great nephew challenged her to sit the written (computer) driving test when she was 93. With no preparation at all, she passed with flying colours. Joan was on the button then and she continues to be so now. Joan was able to retire at 59 but immediately fell ill with bowel cancer which was treated very successfully in Bradford. As I write this, the de-vegetation of the canal towpath is well underway, in preparation for the refurbishment (p18). The Wendover Canal Trust (Formerly the Wendover Arm Trust) have been busy removing vegetation from the canal towpath from Wharf Rd to Halton Bridge. This is in preparation for the path upgrade later this year. The fence on Wharf Rd has been uncovered and there are plans to replace it with a wall and railings to improve its visibility, a possible example is shown below, right
