Rotary in Wendover and District is now fully focused on the Eco-Santa Sleigh runs visiting as many roads as possible in Wendover and Weston Turville. We have found that young and old alike enjoy seeing the ecovehicle used by Santa as well as relishing the personal visit. The more volunteers to help us, the more roads we can cover. We are very grateful to the volunteers who turned out last year to help. Please feel free to volunteer this year!
Our itinerary will be published in the December print edition of Wendover News. This year Rotary in Wendover & District is supporting Wendover Dementia Support, Chiltern Foodbank and other Rotary supported charities.

HS2 Planning Submissions
Buckinghamshire Council are still considering HS2’s design for the Green Tunnel and North Cutting north of Ellesborough Road, which we understand has been delayed due to lack of information about the water and drainage issues. You can see our joint response with the Parish Council about our main concerns on the website whs2.org. One of these is the lack of definition about how the land will be reused once the Green Tunnel has been built. There are landscaping proposals for about 25 acres, but we would like your feedback about how the area should be used. Should it become parkland, sports facilities, or a nature reserve? Please use the survey at www.whs2.org/survey.htm to give us your opinion.
We’re also expecting the plans for the Small Dean Viaduct and Embankment to be submitted very soon. These will be available on the Buckinghamshire Council/AVDC Planning Applications website (just search for “HS2”).
Small Dean Works starting up
There’s evidence that the main civil
Photos (clockwise from top) show a view north to Grove Farm, chalk stockpiled at Bacombe Lane and a dump truck at Small Dean.
engineering works are getting started in the Small Dean area. There has been considerable excavation at Small Dean Lane for the “Mass Haul Road” used to move spoil north as far as Stoke Mandeville. Large dump trucks carrying up to 45 tons of material are already moving spoil up to Grove Farm and Bacombe Lane, and we will see much more of this when the conveyor over the A413 starts operating.
Now that piling has been completed for the Wendover Dean Viaduct, foundations preparations are also visible for the works on the Small Dean Viaduct, with installation of Bentonite tanks beside the A413. These provide “drilling mud” to manage the groundwater in the 50 metre deep holes needed for the piles to support the viaduct piers.
the haul road, so there are traffic marshals to ensure public safety during dump truck working hours.
The most disruptive works have been the overnight closures of the A413 with trees and other vegetation being removed from both sides of the road to accommodate the s-bend realignment of the road around the viaduct piers. Having cleared the areas, the next step will be the diversion of underground water mains and telecomms cable ducts which will inevitably mean more closures of the road until the end of the year.
For
Building
One of HS2’s “undertakings” was to ensure that bridleway access could be maintained up Small Dean Lane to allow pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders to access Dunsmore. That has now been opened around the work compound site, and it provides vistas of where the viaduct and embankment are going to be built. The bridleway crosses
We have been pushing EKFB to improve the roadside advanced warning signage and diversion routes for light vehicles but the current situation is still causing delays and frustration for motorists according to the feedback on social media. Please make use of the HS2 Helpdesk (which is available 24 hours a day) on 08081 434 434 to register your complaints! Demand a case reference number to ensure that your issue is logged, and hopefully we can get things improved if there’s a volume of complaints so they can’t ignore the issues.
Want to get involved?

The club meets at Halton Village Hall on the first Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm. Following a successful exhibition and fair, we are now back to our smaller club projects, and in October we made glow-in-the-dark ghosts. 1st Apollo Scouts at Kop Hill
On 24 & 25 September, a group of Scouts from 1st Wendover Apollo Scouts spent the weekend at the Kop Hill Climb in Princes Risborough racing their home made soap boxes.
Having spent months designing and building the soap boxes with the help of their scout leaders and parents, two groups were
ready to race - Team Time Travellers and Apollo Racing. They had an amazing time test-riding and then racing for real, and the Apollo Racing team came away with 1st place for the furthest distance travelled. We are very proud of them all!
We continually face a growing demand of young people wanting to join our troop and are always in need of a bit of additional help. If you feel you could offer a skill or just a bit of time every now and then to help with Scouts, we would love to hear from you. This could include cycling, sailing or canoeing on a lovely summer's evening or cooking marshmallows on an open fire in the rain in February with everything in between! If you are interested in finding out more please do get in touch by emailing apollo@1stwendoverscouts.co.uk.
Outdoors and Indoors, there's plenty going on with the Wildlife Trust
After forgoing alcohol in October we need to get outside and start building up a thirst for the Christmas period just around the corner... Nothing could be better than a crisp morning among the fallen leaves doing some essential conservation work on a local reserve. Bacombe Hill is one that has vacancies on its regular team and if you contact volunteering@bbowt.org.uk, Wayne will send you details of this and alternatives which you can view on https://www.bbowt. org.uk/volunteering-opportunities. These include at Dancersend where we can always use a few more willing hands to complete the plans deriving from the Rothschild grant, which will be covered in an online talk by Mick Jones at 7.30pm on 16 November.
If indoor activities are more your thing, the College Lake Learning Team led by Sarah Close has launched a very full programme of hands-on sessions for all age groups from

Wendover Bowls Club
First I must congratulate our team playing in the Chiltern and Thames League on getting through to the final. Though they didn't win they finished in Bronze medal position.
We finished our outdoor season with the match between teams representing the Chairman and the Captain. This game is always popular as it is our last chance to play on grass before we move indoors. We managed to squeeze in eight rinks across the green which made it pretty cosy and your bowl didn't have to stray far before you found you had joined the game next door. After a long afternoon's effort the Chairman's team won by one shot whereupon we all retired to the clubhouse for a splendid supper. Next morning more than thirty members turned up to put the green to bed. In a couple of hours all the benches and chairs are stored away, the mats retrieved from the ditch around the green and the furniture in
the clubhouse reconfigured for the indoor season. It is always a bit of a worry how we will play after the change from outdoor to indoor bowis. They are such different animals, one requiring a degree of physical strength and the other a more delicate touch. Well, we started on a high in our first game with a whitewash against Marsh Gibbon, winning all four of our games. Now all we have to do is keep it up for the rest of the season. One can only dream.

Wendover Art Club
The Wendover Art Club's year got off to a brilliant start with a demo by local artist Mark Fennell, who studied Art at Amersham College. His first career was as an Art Director in advertising but he became disillusioned with this, turning to professional portraiture in oils.
For his demonstration Mark used a photo image displayed on a tablet, a few feet away, similar to the distance with a live model. Mark avoids the use of a grid to help transfer an image to his board and instead uses his brush to measure distances and angles as shown in the image.
When not working to a very tight demo deadline Mark can take some 3 or 4 days to complete a portrait. If you would like to see more of Mark’s work or were thinking of commissioning him (he does dogs as well as humans!) please visit his website at https:// markfennell.co.uk

Conserving Household Energy
As the nights draw in and temperatures start to drop, our thoughts could well be turning to how we can conserve our household energy consumption to stay warm and keep bills as low as possible in light of rising energy prices.
Top of the list should be to insulate as much of your home as possible, as 70% of heat is lost through walls, windows and the roof. If your house was built before the 1990’s it's unlikely to have cavity wall insulation so this could be a good place to start. Insulating your roof is also relatively easy and will save about 25% of heat loss from your home.
Draughts from windows, doors and chimneys cool your house down so the heating must work harder to maintain a warm temperature. Make it a priority to draft proof your house this winter – adding a thermal lining to curtains or installing a letterbox cover and draft doorstops will all
In October, National Grid advised it is preparing for the possibility of having to hold three hour rolling blackouts if Britain is unable to import sufficient electricity from Europe or has insufficient gas to meet demand. Businesses and households are being asked to reduce consumption by 5% this winter.
Our top suggestions to cut consumption include – only heat the space you are using so turn the heating and lights off in any rooms you are not using. If you have thermostats on bedroom radiators turn them down until an hour before bedtime to heat the room just before you need it. Use appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines at off peak times, not only will this save you money if you are on a time of use tariff but it will help balance out the demand and help the country keep the lights on at peak time.

What happens if I don`t have Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs)?
If you do not have LPAs (or Enduring Powers of Attorney – EPAs) and you lose mental faculties for whatever reason, such as dementia, other illness, accident, or if you are travelling or living overseas, then no-one is automatically authorised to look after your financial or health related matters for you.
This can cause significant issues, both for you and your family.
For example, bank accounts or investments held in your sole name would not be available for your, or anyone else's, benefit until someone applies for Deputyship. This could cause serious problems and concerns as some couples hold many assets in one person's name, so as to save income tax.
If the person owning those assets loses capacity, those assets will not be available again until a Deputy has been appointed.
Likewise, if someone lived by themselves and had a fall resulting in their needing to
move into care, there could be difficulties selling the house, which may be necessary to pay for care fees.
Deputyship
If you do not have LPAs (or EPAs) and lose capacity, someone will need to apply for Deputyship before being authorised to look after your affairs. This takes longer than preparing LPAs – applications could take 8 months or more – is more restrictive in what the Deputy is allowed to do, is more expensive, and has annual fees.
LPAs
LPAs provide you, and your family, with peace of mind: you decide who you want to look after your financial and health affairs if you ever wanted them to, or if they needed to.
If you would like to discuss LPAs or related matters, please contact me on iain@ wanstallconsulting.co.uk or 01296 415700.

Handel's Messiah
For centuries, Christmas has been synonymous with Handel’s Messiah. There can be few works more uplifting and more thought-provoking. Handel composed his Messiah during a personally difficult time in his life and took a mere 24 days to complete the incredible work. The three sections, Prophecy and Fulfilment, Suffering and Redemption, tell the story of Jesus Christ’s Nativity, Passion, Resurrection and Ascension, and contain some of the best known and best loved choruses in the choral canon.
Following on from the great success of the May concert, where the choir presented Beethoven’s Mass in C, Wendover Choral Society will again be welcoming superb young soloists from the Royal Academy of Music. The choir is also very excited to be
working with musicians from the famed Brook Street Band, ‘one of the country’s foremost interpreters of Handel’s music’. Music Director, Peter Bassano, will be conducting the gathered musicians in what is sure to be a wonderful concert.
Rehearsals are well under way and the choir is sounding in fine voice. Wendover Choral Society is delighted to be presenting Handel’s great oratorio on Saturday 3 December and is very much hoping that they’ll need to repeat the request, issued at the 1742 premiere of the work in Dublin, for ladies to wear dresses ‘without hoops’ to make room for a greater audience!

Chiltern Way Academy Governors
Chiltern Way Academy Trust has an OFSTED outstanding school here in Wendover and is recruiting school governors. As a Multi Academy Trust we are in the process of setting up Local Governing Boards for each of our schools, including ours here in Wendover. The board will work alongside the senior leadership team and Trustees in a supportive and challenging way, to ensure the best outcomes for our young people. The sorts of things you would be involved in include safeguarding, health and safety, risk management, performance and quality of educational provision. Meetings take place once each term, with some others as required. It is an incredibly interesting and important role and would suit anyone who is interested in supporting a local school in your community, along with the willingness to give up a few hours a month.
We would love to talk to you, show you round the school and answer any questions you might have.
You can find out more by contacting Paul Coffey, Head of Campus at pcoffey@ chilternway.org or by popping in to the school reception. Paul Coffey

Curtain alteraons
On 7-9 October under a huge marquee in the middle of Castle Park, Wendover truly celebrated Oktoberfest. James & Nicola Grant pulled off what is probably the most talked about event in years. What a huge success. The Oktoberfest event was held in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. No2 has literally raised tens of thousands of pounds since the event began in 2020.
It all started on our little market square next to No2 Pound Street. The No2 team set up gazebos and put on a mini-Oktoberfest with live music, bratwurst, and a cracking raffle. After 2 years it was clear that Oktoberfest had outgrown its roots and needed to move to a larger space. Castle Park has never
seen such an event. There were hundreds of guests dressed in their lederhosen and dirndl’s singing along to Oompa and popular tunes played by live bands. There was a long bar serving German lagers and of course an open kitchen preparing Pretzels, Bratwurst & Black Forest Gateaux. No2 used an open fire pit called the OFYR to cook the pretzels and bratwursts and used Big Green Egg barbecues to keep everything hot. Imagine having to serve almost 300 people in a field and keep them all happy with Steins of lager.
No2 look forward to coming back next year with an even better Oktoberfest, raising more money for another worthwhile charity.

Buckinghamshire History Festival
Get ready for a fascinating November packed full of Bucks history and culture with the Buckinghamshire History Festival. Organised by Buckinghamshire Archives and back for its seventh year, organisations across the county will be bringing Bucks’ past to life this November with tours, talks, and theatre.
Clive Harriss, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said:
has a rich history, and you don’t need to consider yourself a history buff to enjoy the creativity and entertainment that the Buckinghamshire History Festival events offer this November.
“You can be entertained by short stories inspired by Buckinghamshire and its history while listening to the Unbound Theatre Company performing Buckinghamshire Tales at Queens Park Arts Centre, or get inspired by the Search of Artists’ Gardens, which identifies artists who have lived in the county and created a garden. You can also be impressed by our Paralympic connections on the anniversary
of London 2012 and celebrate the journey of the Paralympic Games that started at our very own Stoke Mandeville and have evolved to the International sporting event we see today. You can come along to explore the displays and take a closer look at the London 2012 collection. There will also be craft activities and a trail for younger children.”
In addition the Archives team will also be sharing their expertise – including the rare opportunity to hear some surprising stories on a tour of the Buckinghamshire Archives, a chance to get top tips from their conservator on preserving old photos and documents, and discover how to research the history of houses – an increasingly popular pastime.
To attend events and a wide range of tours, talks, and theatre events, visit histfestbucks. co.uk to find out more and get booking. New events are being added regularly, so make sure you follow Buckinghamshire Archives on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to keep up to date.

WAVUS Launch Event
Wendover and surrounding villages have formed a support group for Ukrainian guests and their hosts – WAVUS for short.
The official launch will take place on 3 November 2022 in St Anne’s Hall, Aylesbury Rd, Wendover from 7.15 to 9.15pm and we would be very pleased if you could come along and support this community group.
The event will provide a great opportunity for Ukrainian guests and local people to meet, to share local knowledge and provide networking and support.
We will sample Ukrainian ‘nibbles’ and drink some vodka; listen to a talk about the country’s culture and customs; and hear about the aims of WAVUS.
All Ukrainian guests in the Wendover and villages area, together with their hosts, plus all interested members of the Wendover and villages community are warmly welcome to join us – we look forward to seeing you there.
Please RSVP to info@wavus.uk.
Supported by Wendover Parish Council and Lionel Abel-Smith Trust.
Give us this day our daily bread
Food inflation is at a record high as prices surge 10.6% higher than a year ago. I’m sure we’ve all noticed our favourite foods cost more than they used to – but had you realised the cost of fresh food has increased by 12.1% since September 2021, and the cost of pasta and tinned tomatoes by 8.6%? Bread prices are up by 16%.
Between April 2021 and March 2022, food banks in the Trussell Trust’s UK wide network distributed over 2.1 million emergency food parcels to people in crisis –14% more than the same period the previous year.
With food and household energy prices continuing to rise, 76% of consumers are saying they expect to be affected by the cost-of-living crisis over the next 3 months, up from 57% in the summer.
Spare a thought then for the most vulnerable in our society, the people who were struggling to afford food before the current crisis.
Youth Concern, an independent local charity that supports vulnerable 13-25 year olds locally, is experiencing a tenfold increase in the number of young people needing help:
• Between January and March 2021, 72 young people visited Youth Concern’s
Drop-in Centre in central Aylesbury. 132 visited during the same period in 2022 (183% increase);
• Between January and March 2021, 26 young people asked for - and receivedinformation about budgeting and benefits. During the same period in 2022, 253 received that information (973% increase);
• In 2022, the number of young people eating a meal at the Drop-in Centre increased by 1027% - and those receiving food and care parcels (eg soap and sanitary products) by 880%.
Ali, aged 19, has been using Youth Concern’s services for a few months. He’s struggling to make ends meet: "I'm actually OK at budgeting but it's hard to make the money stretch. A homecooked meal at the Drop-in Centre and a food parcel to take away – it helps me get to the end of the week."
But Youth Concern wouldn’t be delivering its vision (that local vulnerable 13-25 year olds will have the resources they need to lead happy, healthy and fulfilling lives) if we just gave out food parcels and hot meals.
Have you heard the old adage that it’s better to teach a man to fish than to give him a fish? ‘Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed
him for a lifetime’. Amongst other things, at Youth Concern we teach young people how to cook. We teach them how to shop economically. And how to turn a food parcel or the contents of a shopping basket into multiple meals. For example, Our Grow It, Cook It, Eat It programme - the pride our young people felt when they picked tomatoes, peppers and chard from our small garden, made a dough and cooked their very own pizzas was visible.
Find out more about Youth Concern’s work by following the links below. And if you feel able to donate, on behalf of the 700 vulnerable young people Youth Concern supports annually, thank you very, very much indeed.

Winter Emergency Appeal 2022
In 2022, Lindengate Mental Health Charity has already supported over 1500 people, through visits to our gardens, volunteering and participation in our programmes. We want to be able to continue to support people, but, in this economic climate, need additional funding just to be able to maintain current levels of service. 1 in 4 people experience mental ill health, which could be one of your loved ones.
Together, we can help change lives. Please support our appeal now.
Why support Lindengate?
• Our programmes are a lifeline for local people struggling with mental health
• We have supported 280 young people so far this year, to improve and maintain their good mental health, through nature-based activities
• Since 2021, over 400 NHS staff have been supported by Lindengate through our Nature Connection programme
Lindengate Charity
better health and wellbeing for all through nature
• Our Memory Pathways programme is a vital service for people living with memory loss and dementia and their carers
• Our community of 200 volunteers benefit from their time at Lindengate and the opportunity to give back to the community. Their contribution is recognised in our Queens Award for Voluntary Service 2022, equivalent to an MBE
• Our 6 acre wellbeing gardens, which are open to all, have been awarded with a Green Flag Community Award 2022, for having one of the best quality community gardens in the country
We are recognised as a flagship charity in Bucks, but this does not protect us from the enormous pressure that is being put
on all charities. We need £2,500 per day to support the 2000 adults and young people who will benefit from being at Lindengate each year. Despite diversifying our income streams and working tirelessly, Lindengate needs an additional £80,000.
The need within the community is greater than ever and, with the cost of living continuing to rise, Lindengate can be a lifeline to so many.
Donating is easy, you can follow the link Lindengate Winter Emergency Appeal or scan the QR code right.
Thank you in anticipation of your support. See advert page 27.

Aston Clinton Braced for Broadband
Build Underway
Work currently taking place in Aston Clinton to connect more than 4,000 homes and businesses to ultrafast broadband is set to be a ’game-changer’ for residents living in the historic village - according to the UK’s leading rural, ultrafast broadband provider, Gigaclear.
Gigaclear is expanding its commercial build, taking its full-fibre network to underserved market towns and communities in Buckinghamshire.
Ben Woods, Central General Manager at Gigaclear, comments: “Work has started and where possible we are utilising existing Openreach ducts and poles in order to minimise disruption during the build phase. We hope to have the first customers from the village on our network by spring 2023 with all 4,500 homes connected by this time next year.
“This is going to be a game-changer for households and residents in Aston Clinton. Having access to reliable and fast broadband speeds is no longer a luxury but is necessary in order for many people to live their lives fully, whether it’s working from home, streaming or accessing other online entertainment.”
Gigaclear’s full-fibre upgrade is bringing speeds of up to 900Mbps, which would enable homeowners to download a film in its entirety in just four seconds.
Gigaclear has frozen its full-fibre broadband rates for 18 months, meaning both new and existing customers will not see a rise in prices until October 2023 at the earliest. For more information or to find if your property can connect to the Gigaclear network, visit www. gigaclear.com and use the postcode checker.

Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity has announced that it is planning to increase the size of its community nursing team this year, as well as adding new roles to its patient wellbeing services.
With a growing and ageing population in Buckinghamshire, the demand for dedicated hospice care is steadily increasing, and the level of care required becoming more complex.
Two new Clinical Nurse Specialist roles have been created to join the existing team who deliver care in patients’ homes across Buckinghamshire and its borders. Clinical Nurse Specialists are often a patient’s first introduction to hospice care and a key bridge between the patient and other healthcare professionals such as GPs and District Nurses.
“Clinical Nurse Specialists offer patients the time and expertise to answer their questions and reassure them about what to expect,” says Liz Monaghan, Matron at the Hospice. “They
build important relationships with patients’ families so that they can trust that their loved one will be treated as an individual, with love, care and dignity, whatever care they need in future."
Christina’s mum, Alison, was recently cared for at her home in North Marston by the Hospice’s Community Nursing Team. Gemma, one of the Hospice’s Clinical Nurse Specialists, supported Alison and her family over the summer, paying regular visits to her home to discuss her care plans, help her to manage her pain and ensure she had the equipment she needed to be cared for at home.
“Mum was adamant that she wanted to stay at home,” Christina told us. “The nurses from Florence Nightingale Hospice were great and the hugs I received when needed kept me
going. Gemma and Sharon were a fabulous support for me and my Dad. I am so glad that they were there to help me fulfil Mum’s wish.”
In addition to these community roles, the charity is investing in its patient well-being services which improve patients’ quality of life. A new Therapy Support Worker and Lymphoedema Nurse will join the team and the Occupational Therapist role is being extended to be able to support more patients.
“We are delighted to be able to grow our services and support even more patients and their families through the toughest times. It is only with thanks to our supporters that we are able to invest in this expansion of hospice care in Buckinghamshire, which will require over an additional £250,000 of funding each year.” says Jo Turner, CEO of the charity. “We are committed to ensuring that every patient in Buckinghamshire is able to access excellent hospice care when they need it and will continue to develop our services to ensure we are meeting this goal.”

Local Home Care Company raises Funds for The Alzheimer’s Society
The annual Memory Walk by the Alzheimer’s Society took place in Watford in September and Amersham based Ashridge Home Care stepped into Cassiobury Park to help raise awareness and money for this worthwhile cause. The Memory Walk is a series of sponsored walks across the UK to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society during the month of September. The walks are free and anyone can take part.
Ashridge Home Care looks after more than 100 clients across Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, many of whom are living with this degenerative disease. Every year Ashridge encourages its carers and families to take part and this year was no exception. New Managing Director Mitch walked along with Founder Trudi and
Care Manager Agata. They were joined by more head office staff who walked in other locations including Care Co-ordinator Chloe and her two dogs! And together they raised nearly £200 for the Alzheimer’s Society.
Supporting people living with dementia to stay in the comfort of their own home and in familiar surroundings is Trudi’s passion.
Hence, she set up Ashridge Home Care six years ago based upon the overriding principle to enable elderly people to stay at home with the right support and care to be safe and happy whatever their situation or condition. Maintaining a regular routine with people they know and love is key to those living with dementia, hence the right live-in or visiting home care is crucial to leading a good quality life.
Trudi said: “We love doing the Memory Walks and encourage others to join us. It is an easy and healthy way to support such an important initiative and raise awareness of the work the Alzheimer’s Society does in the community.”
If you are concerned about a loved one who may need support, contact on Tel: 01494 917344 for a friendly talk or email: info@ashridgehomecare.co.uk See advert page 29.

The Chilterns MS Centre has recently completed major improvement work on its hydrotherapy pool to help make it more energy efficient and reduce water wastage.
The £25,000 project carried out by the Wendover-based charity, funded partly by a grant from the Clothworkers’ Foundation, involved several upgrades including the installation of a chemical dosing system, variable speed drive, digital flow meter and UV filter. It is anticipated that the variable speed drive alone will lead to savings of £15,000 per year as the pumps can be slowed down, or stopped altogether, during periods of low usage.
All these upgrades will help maintain water quality in a way that is more cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Having more efficient ways of maintaining the water quality means less time needs to be spent on cleaning processes and more time is available for people to benefit from using the pool.
“The value of hydrotherapy to our members cannot be underestimated so being able to continue such an essential service but in a more sustainable way is vital,” said Terry Baldwin, Head of Facilities and Business Development. “We are extremely grateful to the Clothworkers’ Foundation for helping to make it happen.”
The pool is used for hydrotherapy which is a form of aquatic physiotherapy where the water supports the body and helps to
stabilise someone with balance problems, which can be very beneficial when treating people with neurological conditions.
“The hydro pool is a lifeline for people coming to the MS Centre,” said Karen ButlerCaddle, user of the hydrotherapy service at the Chilterns MS Centre. “It’s so helpful for physiotherapy and it helps with the pain. It also gives you extra ability to stand which I wouldn’t be able to do normally on dry land.”
The Chilterns MS Centre provides treatments and services to people with MS, helping them to live life to the full. This year the Centre has begun a pilot programme to open up its services to people with other neurological conditions starting with Parkinson’s Disease and stroke survivors. If anyone with MS, Parkinson’s or who has experienced a stroke feels they would benefit from the services offered then they should get in touch with the Chilterns MS Centre by phoning 01296 696133. Girls Festival of Rugby
In October, RAF Halton were delighted to host the annual SecureCloud+ Girls Festival of Rugby supported by the RAF Ruby Union Women’s Team and various military rugby referees.
The event is a round robin tournament that involves 45 teams of circa 1200 under 18 female rugby players who are fit and motivated with an understanding of team ethos and the application of effort towards a common goal.
Mrs Emma Leek, Aylesbury and Chesham Under 18’s Coach said: “It is my first time here and it is fantastic to see so many girls playing competitive rugby. It’s great news for the future of our sport.”
With Warrant Officer Wilson, Council Member of the RAF Rugby Union saying: “The skill level and enjoyment of the players and everyone at the event has gone through the roof. It really meets the aspiration for growing rugby."
History of the Armed Forces
In September, Jackson and McTeague flight held an event on ‘The History of the Armed Forces’.
Station personnel were invited to the ADF building to view the recruits’ presentations and have the opportunity to hear some of the interesting stories they had learnt of during their research.
A vast range of presentations was given, showcasing the history of aircraft, the history of military uniform, and some recruits gave their family history detailing multi-generational family members who had served within the armed forces including original artefacts from World War II.
Well done to the recruits who had clearly spent a lot of time on their research which ensured a successful event.

Local Face: Catherine Waterman
It hardly seems possible that it’s twenty years ago since Catherine’s Mum, Philippa Kearney, took a giant step into the unknown and opened The Flower Gallery (photo centre by Sarah Greer Photography). Unsurprisingly, Catherine remembers it well, since it was the day after her sixteenth birthday! School then was the Sir Henry Floyd but it wasn’t long before she found herself working Saturdays in the shop.
She eventually went on to study for her Marketing Degree at Manchester Metropolitan University for three years, frequently returning to work in the shop during the holidays. On graduation a corporate future beckoned but the lure of flowers proved irresistible. She came back to provide cover for Agi during her maternity leave in 2008 – and has been there ever since!
Catherine and Peter were married in 2013 and son Tommy celebrated his first birthday on 17 October. By strange coincidence they live in Princess Mary Gate, just metres from where Catherine was born in Princess Mary Hospital.
Another twist of fate saw Agi return to work in The Flower Gallery to return the favour and cover for Catherine during her maternity leave!
She already has fond memories of her time on the High Street. The shop has made bouquets for the late Queen Elizabeth II and also for Princess Anne and other members of the Royal Family. Five Prime Ministers have also been catered for at Chequers. High on the list is the amazing day when she found herself being paid a visit by Take That as part of a TV ad for Suzuki. Wendover came to a halt for a time as filming took place, https://tinyurl.com/3ucuhnnn. People still chide her for not letting them know
in advance that Take That were coming to town – but she genuinely had no idea! The ad can still be seen on You Tube. Another highlight was recording Escape to the Country in the shop just five days before Tommy was born.
Away from the shop, one of Catherine’s main interests is Zumba. After attending classes for a few years she decided to become an Instructor and since qualifying in 2016 she has run her own busy classes at the Memorial Hall in Great Missenden. Good exercise, friendship and fun! She’s always happy to see and welcome new faces and if you’d like to learn more about Zumba then you can find information on http:// catherinewaterman.zumba.com
Although obviously happy to be playing her part in a long-established family business, Catherine is excited, too, for the future of Wendover’s High Street and its expanding range of successful Independents. The number of ‘out of town’ visitors continues to increase and there is no doubt that Wendover is enjoying welldeserved growth as a shopping ‘destination’.

View from the Chair
September was a busy month when I represented the Parish of Wendover at the Buckinghamshire Council Proclamation reading, their Memorial service for the Queen, and at St Mary’s Wendover for ours. We also read the Proclamation on the Manor Waste at the specified time, and my thanks to the staff for their help with this.
Phoebe Sharps has now joined the team in the new post of Estates & Events Manager, and we wish her every success in the new role. We have had two resignations from the Councillors, Andrew Barnard and Ruth Malleson, due to pressures of work. WPC thanks them for their hard work and commitment to the Parish. We welcome Heather Thornton as one new co-opted councillor and look forward to working with her, leaving one vacancy. Please see our website for details if you wish to apply.
Haddington Play Park is now very near completion and we hope that local children enjoy the new area. Should there be any damage, please report it to the Clocktower, asap. The Parking Review has now closed with a report presented to the Parking Review group on 21 October. Thanks to everyone who commented and rest assured these will be taken into account. Wendover Celebrates fireworks (5 November) and the WPC Christmas event (30 November) are fast approaching so I hope everyone will support these and have fun! Good luck to volunteers, staff and councillors and thank you for your help.
That’s all for now, Enjoy!
Sheila Bulpett
New Staff at Wendover Parish Council Clerk Andy Smith Andy has a successful track record of governance and elected officers from the charities and the education sector. With over 20 years’ experience in Students’ Unions and experience in SMEs and Charities, Andy has worked in commercial teams, led governance and democratic reform, and developed membership services.
As CEO of a students’ union (a registered charity and company) he rebuilt the governance, staff infrastructure, returned the organisation to a stable financial footing and developed its leadership team. As a charity consultant Andy has designed and implemented peer education projects and is director of a company delivering environmental training for young leaders.
He started his career designing and delivering courses in personal skills development and this started his passion for empowering the people he works with to get the best from them.
It is with this background of elected leadership and governance support in a wide range of contexts that Andy is excited to be supporting the councillors of Wendover Parish Council, a parish he lives in and loves.
Estates & Events Manager Phoebe Sharps Phoebe has over 6 years of experience in the events industry. Her interest grew from volunteering at community events, along with first aid duty at events as a Corporal Cadet for St John Ambulance in her hometown in Northamptonshire.
Starting her professional career in the industry 5 years ago in the events team for O2, she was event lead on Warchild Brits Week gigs and Theme Park takeovers for O2 customers.
After the lockdown in 2020, Phoebe started working for Hodder Education managing the operations and logistics of the Teacher Training and Student Revision events.
She moved to Bucks where she has family and friend connections 1-½ years ago. Phoebe is ready for the new exciting challenge of Estates and Events Manager for Wendover Parish Council and understands how important community engagement is.
