Wendover shops and cafés are supporting people living with dementia
Wendover News October 2022 Please mention Wendover News when responding to adverts6
The best way to help people with dementia is to give them time, be patient and help them feel at ease. It helps to introduce yourself and explain that you are there to help everyone find what they want and pay at the checkout. Try not to appear in a hurry, bombard them with questions or make them feel inadequate. Instead help them to relax and listen carefully so you can give the specific help they need. They may have
“I only wanted two things but they had changed everything in the shop so I couldn’t find any sugar. A lovely lady helped me find it and sorted out the money for it from my purse. She said she often couldn’t find things either and we laughed together. I felt I had found a friend.”
Some Wendover businesses received dementia training from Wendover Dementia Action Alliance before the pandemic, so people living with dementia usually get help when they are shopping or having a coffee in Wendover. Only a few people with dementia wear badges or carry Helpcards, so Wendover businesses are trained to think of dementia if someone seems bewildered, lost or in difficulty.

HS2 Planning Submission for the Green Tunnel and North Cutting HS2 have now submitted the design for the Green Tunnel and North Cutting to Bucks Council for approval. You can read the Noise Demonstration Report at https:// whs2.org/HS2WGT.pdf and other related documents are available on the Bucks Council planning portal. HS2/EKFB have put forward a design for north Wendover where the cutting noise protection is provided only by earthworks. This still leaves 228 homes exposed to excess noise. An improvement for 78 homes is largely due to changes in the train specification. EKFB have considered a number of noise barrier solutions, but have rejected these on the grounds that they do not consider the relevant HS2 noise requirement (backed up by an Undertaking and Assurance) to be sufficiently important! They also quote the visual impact of barriers, even though a (for example) 5m barrier along the bottom of a 10m cutting is invisible from almost everywhere. Needless to say, WHS2 plans to campaign vigorously for a better solution.

Ellesborough Road will be open for the duration of the project although we may need short duration closures from time to time. At the end of the project the temporary diversion will be removed, and the old alignment reinstated.
Ellesborough Road approximately 350m to the Dueeast.
Work on the construction of the temporary diversion of Ellesborough Road has commenced now that the property demolition has been completed. The purpose of the diversion is to enable us to construct the Wendover Green Tunnel and our internal site access roads without impacting road traffic. The temporary diversion includes a bridge which will carry road traffic over the construction site which not only enables us to eliminate thousands of vehicle movements from the public road network but also allows us to construct the tunnel without inconveniencing the public.

The annual needle match between the Ladies and Gentlemen took place at the end of August. It is always well supported and this year was no exception with 56 players on 7 rinks and even a few reserves. Unfortunately the Ladies were a few players short and several Gentlemen suddenly found they had changed sex. I suppose that is unremarkable in this day and age but they found their feminine side and blended in so well that it was hard to notice the difference. They were excused having to wear a dress as most ladies wear trousers these days. Despite the Ladies being given a three shot start, those ungallant Gentlemen still won

The Club, which meets at Halton Village Hall on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm, will be busy preparing for their upcoming exhibition and fair this month. If you are interested in seeing what we do, the exhibition is being held on Saturday 8 October, at Wilstone Village Hall, in Wilstone near Tring. The exhibition opens at 11.30am and includes displays of our projects over the last two years, plus sales tables (one supporting Cancer Research). There will also be a raffle, tombola and refreshments. The different displays range from a mini village hall "Bake-Off" competition, houses in different scales and Christmas card dioramas to zoo enclosures and scenes set "inside" a book! If you would like any more information, contact Diane on 07899090399.

This is a selfled section and the leader's role is really all about keeping an eye and making sure the young adults operate in a safe way and in line with Scout rules. The Network is a great way to keep young adults connected to Scouting and hopefully bring through a few leaders of the future.

Space heating, the way we heat our homes, is one of the most carbon-intense parts of our overall energy use, and one which uses the most energy proportionally. As a result, it’s a key area where we could make big strides in reducing our impact on the planet through carbon emissions – but because heating is essential in cold weather, it might seem the most impossible to reduce without increasing our discomfort.
The one everyone knows is turn your

However, many of the assumptions we make about our gas heating systems are wrong, created in a world where gas was cheap and mistakes in installation or poor building design didn’t matter. Now, thanks to campaigns by planet-friendly professionals in the heating industry, we know that there are simple things we can do to reduce energy just by using our existing systems better. But what are these?
heating thermostat down a degree or two. But what if you can’t stand your house being below 20 degrees? Well, you can retrofit thermostatic radiator valves to pretty much any radiator – so you can choose a Resideo or Tado fitting and controls and create heat zones to heat the spaces you use when you need them.
If you have a combi-boiler, you can do even more. Most plumbers don’t tell you that modern condensing boilers do not actually condense when they heat water for your radiators above 60 degrees. Most plumbers will install a new gas boiler and leave it with a flow temperature of 80 degrees. This is wasteful and too high for the boiler to reclaim any of the waste heat it should be reusing in order to save energy. Get yours turned down to 60 degrees, and you’ll see savings of up to 10%. As development spirals, nature disappears and the impacts of climate change affect us all, the Chiltern Society relies on local people; its members and volunteers, to ensure it can tackle these challenges now and for years to
The Chiltern Society’s Amanda Barnicoat is managing the pilot. "We know there is a
wealth of expertise, passion and goodwill, she says, "but groups often work in isolation or without means to progress. We hope this project will coordinate and join up local efforts, offering support to help create a model of local ownership that can be rolled out to other areas."

A local charity is calling out to local nature lovers to tell them about their Wendover conservation efforts.
The new Community Wildbelt project will mean that - collectively – residents can make a greater difference and create the connected network of spaces that nature so desperately needs to recover.
The Community Wildbelt project joins the Chiltern Society’s existing ‘roving’ conservation teams that work on nature projects, including the charity’s own Cobblers Pits reserve near Aston Clinton (photo).
For almost 60 years, the Chiltern Society have been restoring and protecting green and blue spaces across the Chilterns. With a lack of centralised resource and coordination to support nature projects, the role of local charities, communities, groups, and landowners is increasingly critical. The charity wants to hear from people from Wendover to Tring to join a pilot partnership that will help inspire, connect and propel projects to have even greater impact.

played with Alyn in the much-loved big band Vile Bodies, and latterly they have worked together in the Buck Clayton Legacy Band, keeping alive his repertoire. Saxophonist Olly Wilby is dazzlingly proficient in a variety of styles, often appearing with Ray Gelato’s Giants of Jive and in the vintage jazz big band, the Pasadena Roof Orchestra.
Guitarist Jez Cook first played the style of jazz associated with Django Reinhardt, and he still works with the violinist Ben Holder, keeping this ‘Hot Club’ music alive. Ian Smith’s encyclopaedic knowledge of ballads and Alyn’s close connection with many giants of American jazz brings variety into the repertoire, while Jez Cook explores such Reinhardt classics as Nuages.

The Transport Secretary has announced the Government will provide up to £60 million from January to March next year, to help bus operators to cap single adult fares at £2 per journey.
“We know people will be feeling the pressure of rising costs this winter, and so we have been working hard this summer to provide practical concrete help that will lower daily expenditure.”
The funding to keep fares down follows the Government’s announcement of £130 million last month to protect vital bus routes and services across the country, which those on lower-incomes in particular rely on.

I have raised a complaint with BC (upheld) about this different treatment earlier in the year.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps (sic) said: “Buses are by far and away the most used form of public transport, so ensuring that almost all bus journeys are no more than £2 will assist passengers over the winter months and provide direct help to thousands of households across the country.
The average single fare for a three-mile journey is estimated at over £2.80, meaning that the new fare will save passengers almost 30% of the price every time they travel.
The move will help passengers with travel costs for work, education, shopping and medical treatments over the winter months while they are facing pressures from the rising cost of living.

The Queen visited the Aylesbury area several times during her 70 years on the throne: in 1962 as part of a celebration of the 10th anniversary of her accession, in 1969 to open Stoke Mandeville stadium, and then in 2002 to mark her golden jubilee. The affection that we felt for her in Buckinghamshire was vividly demonstrated just a few months ago during the platinum jubilee celebrations – it was a pleasure to join Wendover residents for your picnic at Witchell Meadow when so many came together, from the youngest child to the most senior citizen, to demonstrate gratitude and appreciation for the commitment and duty shown throughout the Queen’s incredible reign.
The death of the Queen was followed by the accession of His Majesty Charles III as our new King and I was very pleased to attend the reading of the Proclamation of the Accession in Wendover. His Majesty’s first address to his people set out his determination to follow his mother’s example of lifelong service, committing to endeavour to serve with loyalty, respect and love. It was a heartfelt and sincere message, and I am sure you join me in wishing him every strength in fulfilling his heavy responsibilities.

The death of Her late Majesty The Queen has profoundly touched us all. Although she was 96 years old, when that desperately sad moment came it was still a shock, because it had almost felt that she would always be there. It was a privilege to be able to pay tribute to the Queen in the House of Commons on behalf of all my constituents. As I said in Parliament, her tireless dedication and unwavering service are unparalleled and will never be forgotten.
God save the King.
Many MPs had been fortunate to meet the Queen, and they had wonderful stories to tell, frequently referring to her sense of humour and the twinkle in her eye. My own memories of Her Majesty are, I suspect, similar to those of the vast majority of the public: I never met her, yet she was somehow very much in our lives. I remember making a scrapbook on the Royal Family for a Cub Scout badge, a village tea party for the silver jubilee, seeing the Queen on the royal barge during the diamond jubilee flotilla. They are snatched glimpses and modest memories, yet there is still an incredible sense of sorrow that she is gone.

Since then, the demand for the foodbank in the Wendover and Chiltern areas has continued to increase, due to the rise in energy bills and inflation. Wendover has become a net "importer" compared to previously having more food than we distributed. The number of distributions that are happening in Wendover is increasing each year. During his first full week in command, Group Captain Garwood met personnel throughout the Station. In his address to the Station, he said: “I am genuinely excited to be here at Royal Air Force Halton, to play my part, and contribute to our continued success. I can already sense the importance of everything we do, and how the Service relies on us and our supported units.”
Group Captain Garwood joined the Royal Air Force direct from school in January 1992, largely thanks to the Air Training Corps and a Sixth Form Scholarship. Following commissioning and professional training he spent his formative years in Royal Air Force Regiment squadron appointments in the Falklands, Germany, London and North Yorkshire. He has a wealth of experience, the majority of which has been on frontline flying stations overlaid with operations, training and staff duties.
Welcome new Commandant
In August, RAF Halton welcomed their new Station Commander Group Captain Garwood.
On 15 August the RAF’s Central Training School (located at RAF Halton) welcomed Group Captain Dave Melmoth as its fourth Commandant. Having completed his Training Officer course at RAF Halton in 2002, and worked on the Station 2014-16 and 201820, he is delighted to return to command the Central Training School. Responsible for RAF Ground Training analysis, training design/delivery enhancement, and assurance, he will also undertake the role of Head of Training Specialisation – providing future direction for the RAF’s cadre of Training Officers and Physical Training Instructors. He said: “I’m thrilled to be back at RAF Halton to lead the Central Training School in our enduring endeavour to continuously improve RAF Training and I look forward to shaping things to deliver the Next Generation Air Force for Defence.”

Terry didn't enjoy being beaten by younger tennis players so he decided to learn to play golf at Weston Turville and progressed until his handicap was low enough to join Ellesborough Golf Club where he played until he was 61. A move to Wendover in 1992 was logical. Technology was changing the way of work so Terry sold his business to Ladbrokes in 2001. He discovered that Halton Tennis Centre welcomed senior players and he was back on court again with great success again.

As I write this View, we have just heard that Queen Elizabeth II has passed away peacefully at Balmoral on 8 September 2022, may she rest in peace. Our thoughts have been with the Royal Family at this sad time, but by the time you read this all the pomp and ceremony marking the passing of our longest serving Monarch will have passed. On behalf of the residents of Wendover, WPC wishes King Charles III every success with his reign and duty as King.

More locally, our Parish Council Staffing has also undergone a significant change and we are very sad to say goodbye to Amanda Massingham, our Deputy Clerk. Amanda has been with us for 5 years and has risen to every challenge, large and small, with a dedicated and professional attitude; she will be much missed for her wise counsel and support and especially in times of stress. We wish her every success in her future role.
View from the Chair
So as a new era begins, I wish you all a peaceful October.
In the Clocktower, Andrew Smith has taken up the position as the new Clerk, Proper Officer and RFO. Phoebe Sharps will be taking up the new post of Estates & Events Manager in October and our new Communications and Administration Assistant will be starting shortly. We look forward to working with the new team and hope they enjoy their new roles.
Other news; Haddington Play Park is now nearing completion and we hope that local children enjoy the new area. Should there be any damage, please report it to the Clocktower, ASAP. The Parking Review has been extended due to 2 maps being wrongly publicised. Please do comment on your road and we will make sure that all feedback is considered, before implementation. ( https:// yourvoicebucks.citizenspace.com/). Issues with the cycle-path steps at Coombe Ave have been repaired. The new highways trees have benefitted from the heavy rainfall of recent days…a monsoon season maybe? It often seems to happen when schools start back.
