Another field fire

Well done England! And well done Wendover Parish Council for flying the Flag of St George on the Manor Waste to acknowledge the Euros and the Commonwealth Games. What a wonderful Summer of Sport it was! Parking Consultation A new statutory parking consultation runs until Friday 16 September 2022. Residents are encouraged to leave feedback on the following website: https://yourvoicebucks.citizenspace.com/ A letter comment should be posted to:Wendover Parking Review feedback FAO Ujjwal Kakkar, Transport for Bucks Griffin Lane Depot, Corrib Industrial Park Griffin Lane, Aylesbury HP19 8BP The plans will also be available for viewing at the Council’s main office - Buckinghamshire Council, The Gateway, Gatehouse Road, Aylesbury HP19 8FF - and at the Clock Tower.

Many thanks to Gordon Findlay for his photo showing the devastation of fields in Hale Lane caused by a fire on Saturday 13 August. Thanks to the heroic efforts of local firefighters and farmers, local homes, livestock and Wendover Woods were all unharmed. Thank you to everyone who helped. This local difficulty followed on from a field fire at Butlers Cross on Monday 8 August and a continuing water leak at Nash Lee Lane. Thames Water are aware of the latter but at the time of going to press have not fixed it.

Dear Sportsperson, Chair or Secretary of local (to Wendover) football or rugby clubs, I’m Bob – ex rugby player and keen sports enthusiast. I am also a trustee of the local group called Wendover Dementia Support, a group dedicated to providing local people with Dementia some degree of professional support via home visits and attendance at a weekly Monday morning café held at the local Christian Centre behind St Anne's Church in Wendover. Aside from professional medical and nursing support, there is a large group of volunteer carers, drivers, tea makers, cake makers, financial advisers to name but a few that keep the team going. With demand on the increase we are always looking for more volunteers – see https://wendoverds.org.uk/

I will give some examples of how things have changed in my lifetime:

• I used to play friendly football games when at college – just a kickaround with mates. The balls that we used to play with were leather balls with laces which were fine when the weather was dry. Not so good heading a wet leather ball – a mere kickaround in 1972 or thereabouts ended with concussion and a visit to the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford. Not so long before that incident I was playing rugby at a pretty low level (where the ref for away matches tended to be an injured player from the opposing team) I was bashed on the back of the head by some chap who I never saw. I was carried to the side of the pitch, had a bucket of cold water thrown at me and then urged to go back on (as I think we only had thirteen players). I remember very little of the remainder of the match, not even remembering that I had scored a try – a fact that my mother picked up when reading the local paper!

The reason I am writing an open letter is not to remind you of the issues that relate to head injuries (via ball heading or collision impact) to Dementia as there are plenty of sources of advice flying around via the FA or RFU. The purpose is to help clubs and organisations, as well as families and Mums and Dads, to be more aware of the risks and how to mitigate against them.

• Twenty years ago I was chair of the Youth section at Aylesbury RFC and coach cum manager of the Colts XV – my son played for the Colts side and wore protective clothing to a degree, I think one lad wore protective head gear. Wearing gum shields was compulsory.

The reason I give both examples is that twenty years ago rugby was considered more advanced than football and clubs in Bucks were beginning to think of player welfare. Have things changed? I don’t know! Maybe slowly at national level. What I do want to instil though is some education from professionals as to causes and help with understanding Dementia. To this end – a bit like Wendover Junior School did a few years ago – I want help to establish Dementia-friendly football and Rugby Clubs. I’m already in touch with Paul at Aylesbury RFC but I’m keen that all local rugby and football clubs and schools as well as those at County level become Dementia friendly.

If the gift exceeded the NRB, there could be an IHT liability on the gift.

Skiing So called “skiing” (“spend the kids' inheritance” on yourself) is also an effective and, potentially, enjoyable way of reducing your IHT liability!

Each tax year, you can give £3,000. (This is a total of £3,000 and not £3,000 for each recipient). You can carry an unused allowance forwards one year.

Charities Gifts to charities are free of IHT. Leaving 10% or more of your estate to charities in your Will reduces the IHT rate to 36% from 40%.

Inheritance Tax (IHT) applies to increasing numbers of people, especially since the government has frozen the main IHT reliefs until at least 2026. IHT efficient gifts available include the following. Annual allowance

Some Inheritance Tax efficient gifts

If you make a gift and survive it by (currently) seven years, the value of the gift will not be included in your estate for IHT. If you die anytime within seven years, provided the gift was less than your IHT free allowance (the Nil Rate Band, currently £325,000), there is no IHT on the gift. However, the NRB available would be reduced by the value of the gift. Eg, if you gave someone £50,000 and died within seven years, they would not pay IHT on the gift, but the NRB would be reduced to £275,000.

Gifts before marriage or civil partnerships

If you are considering making gifts for IHT purposes, I recommend that you take specialist professional advice first.

As ever, the first port of call for issues you need to report is the HS2 Helpdesk which is available 24 hours a day on 08081 434 434. If you contact them it’s worth getting a case reference number to ensure that your issue is logged, which also assists us if you need our help in getting things resolved. Want to get involved? If you would like to help us “Do what’s right for Wendover”, have a look at our website whs2.org where you’ll find details of what we’re doing. If you need further help, want to join us, or have ideas or suggestions that would mitigate the community impact, then get in touch at enquiries@whs2.org

It's taken a while but we’re starting to see some recognition of the issues in the latest designs. We still don’t think they are good enough, and are working with the Environment Agency and Bucks Council who seem to agree with us and have the signoff authority. While earthmoving is happening south of Rocky Lane now (photo below), the final plans for the Small Dean and Green Tunnel sections have not yet (at time of writing) been submitted to the Council so we now expect the serious local civil engineering will slip into next year.

While that will avoid dump trucks crossing the A413 we can expect some disruption in the autumn when underground utility services are moved to enable diversion of the road so that the Viaduct can be built.

While the final plans are still awaited for the main Green Tunnel and Small Dean Viaduct construction works there has been continued progress on enabling works in August. The main community impact has been closure of Public Rights of Way for walkers, with the path over Folly Bridge to Wellwick Farm being closed for the installation of a water main (photo above) to supply the Concrete Batching Plant. The section between Dobbins Lane and the bridge is due to reopen shortly, but the ongoing path over the construction site is expected to remain closed until late 2024.

Two new temporary roads are being built from the roundabout at the northern end of the bypass to divert Nash Lee Road and Nash Lee Lane around the excavation for the North Cutting (photos below). These are now expected to open later this year.

However walkers on the “Aylesbury Ring” can now head up Ellesborough Road from the Station and take the newly built Right of Way which goes to Wellwick on the west side of the construction site. HS2 have also taken note of community feedback and have built a new bridleway enabling walkers, cyclists and riders to get from Wendover to Dunsmore without having to face the traffic on the A413. The new path goes round the north and west sides of the Small Dean Lane construction compound, and is now visible from Bacombe Hill (photo below).

Also in the photo you can see the northern end of the conveyor system which is being built to move spoil over the A413 at Small Dean to build the embankments next to the Wendover Bypass and at Stoke Mandeville.

If you’re interested in the history of the 13 year saga of Wendover and HS2 we’ve created a new section on our website whs2.org/history.htm that provides the key decision dates, with links to the reports and videos documenting what went on.

Enabling works continuing

We have been in protracted discussion with HS2 and EKFB about the community impact of the North Cutting regarding the expected noise experienced in North Wendover from the trains. Also the diversion of water from the Coombe Hill Aquifer from the Wendover Arm Canal and Weston Turville Reservoir nature reserve towards Stoke Mandeville and Aylesbury; increasing the flood risk there.

Wendover News September 2022 Please mention Wendover News when responding to adverts10 HS2 in Wendover Small Dean Lane to the south of Wendover currently has a longterm closure in place for the construction of the Small Dean Viaduct which will span the A413 London Road, the Chiltern Rail line and Small Dean Lane itself. The road is not likely to reopen until 2024.

The route of this new bridleway runs through and around our site, exiting part of the way up Small Dean Lane. The bridleway crosses a busy internal haul road.

To ensure those using the path are kept safely away from large plant and machinery, we will have a crossing point. This crossing point will have traffic marshals on either side making sure vehicles' movements cease so that safe crossing can be made. Work on the construction of the bridleway is almost complete and once Buckinghamshire Council have approved this path it will be opened to the public. We expect the bridleway to be open before the end of August.

Wendover Bowls Club Phew!! What a scorcher. The heat did for our long awaited Gala but a monumental effort by Eric and Ann Smith and others saw it played just two weeks later. Eleven of the original fourteen teams agreed to come on the new date. This left us in a bit of a quandary as we need even numbers for the draw. We could have fielded a Wendover team but it is considered bad form to win your own Gala so they would have to have played to lose. At the last minute another club joined us saving an embarrassing situation. The day was a great success. Not only does the Gala swell the coffers, but it is a great showcase for the club and most of the clubs that came have promised to return next year. This extraordinary weather has taken its toll on matches with several cancellations. By their very nature bowling greens do not offer shade and the sight of elderly parboiled bowlers has to be avoided. Still, at last the forecast is talking about rain so it will probably pour between now and Christmas and we will all be able to have a good grumble.

The Stoke Mandeville Village Society reignited In 1973, a group of local residents formed The Stoke Mandeville Society, with aims to to “preserve a village way of life and community spirit”, it sadly disappeared in the 1980’s and 30 years of over-development is now evident in the village and surrounding neighbourhoods within the parish.

Determined to continue its work, a group of passionate residents, local groups and businesses have come together to revitalize The Society with a mission to: protect & enhance the village’s character, charm & scale, improve our sense of community and thereby put ‘village life’ back into the heart of our historic village.

The Society has a clear vision to ensure the original Village, with its post-war developments, reclaims its boundaries, charm, sense of community and historic past. It will protect the history, ensure it is fit for purpose for the future, encourage and develop community activities, promote interest and awareness throughout Bucks & beyond. It will also support local community eco-friendly initiatives, organize social and informative events, monitor planning applications, and consult members on relevant issues. Run by Stoke Mandeville Villagers for Stoke Mandeville Villagers, it is politically nonaligned and welcomes everyone over the age of 18 years, living, working, or visiting the Village. It already has over 60 members, with many more joining and hopes by the end of the year to have at least half of the Village residents and businesses signed up. Being a subscriber to the website & membership is free in the first year. For more information, to become a member or to volunteer your time to help the society achieve its aims, please email: stokemandevillevillage@gmail.com, check out Instagram @stokemandevillevillage and watch out for our website, currently in development. A news Release from the Local Government Boundary Commission for England New boundaries are being proposed for council wards in Buckinghamshire Council. The Local Government Boundary Commission wants to hear what residents and local organisations think about the proposals. A consultation on the proposals will run until 10 October 2022 The Commission is the independent body that draws these boundaries. It is reviewing Buckinghamshire to make sure councillors will represent about the same number of electors, and that ward arrangements will help the council work effectively. The Commission has published proposals for changes to Buckinghamshire. It is proposing that Buckinghamshire Council should have 98 councillors. Those councillors should represent 51 wards, represented by 10 three-councillor wards, 27 two-councillor wards and 14 single-councillor wards. The boundaries of most wards will change.

Have your say on a new political map for Buckinghamshire Council

• The creation of single councillor Sands and Downley wards in the High Wycombe area, as a result of strong community-based evidence

Launching the consultation Professor Colin Mellors, Chair of the Commission, said: “We want people in Buckinghamshire to help us. We have drawn up proposals for new wards in Buckinghamshire. We want to make sure these new electoral arrangements reflect communities. We also want them to be easy to understand and convenient for local people.

"Just tell us what you think and give us some details why you think that. It’s really simple, so do get involved.”

Historic footage from local hospice opening revealed A VHS video showing original footage of the opening of Florence Nightingale Hospice has recently been discovered. The video was handed into the Hospice by one of the nursing team and, thanks to the Aylesbury branch of Snappy Snaps, has been converted to a digital format and is now able to be viewed online. The charity has been reviewing its archive of historical items, press cuttings and photos and invited supporters to come in to view their memorabilia and to share their own memories on two Charity History Days on Tuesday 2 and Friday 5 August at its Head Office on Walton Street in Aylesbury.

The Hospice originally opened with 12 beds and a Day Hospice unit. Over the years, with further fundraising campaigns, the building has been extended to increase the size of the Day Hospice room, add space for a Lymphoedema Clinic and to provide office space for the growing team of community nurses. “We were thrilled to receive this mystery video, simply marked ‘Hospice Opening’ and to watch the original footage. When war was declared, on Bank Holiday Monday, 3 August 1914 most local lads joined the 2/1st Bucks who trained in England and were only sent to France in May 1916, many under Captain Ivor StewartLiberty. They did not participate in the Battle of the Somme which started on 1 July. The Battle of Fromelles was a distraction to the north on 19 July. The account of the battle is clear and horrifying. The book is available from and-sword.co.uk/https://www.pen. Pen and Sword Books have republished local military historian Mike Senior's very readable book No Finer Courage, (2004), revised in 2011 and in 2022 with a new title, Fromelles 1916. Another subtitle is The Loss of an English Village. The biggest loss for The Lee was at Fromelles, more famous now for the huge Australian Memorial Park. Descriptions of life in The Lee in the early 20th century reveal a caring Lord of the Manor in Arthur Liberty and his heirpresumptive nephew, Ivor Stewart-Liberty.

Whilst it is lovely to enjoy blue skies and sunshine the impact of high temperatures locally in Wendover and surrounding villages is evident – trees are wilting, the outflow from the reservoir has ceased and fields of wheat were harvested before we had even reached August. As humans, we are ever resourceful at adapting to climate change. We can air condition offices, homes, transport and cars - in fact, the first ever air-conditioned train arrived in the UK in 2009 and whilst only 5% of homes in Britain currently have air conditioning, this is likely to rise in the future. We can also save water and build new reservoirs to help us better manage droughts.

However, rather than continuously adapting to cope with the effects of climate change, which can add to our carbon emissions, perhaps now is the time to evaluate our individual carbon footprint.

A landmark study by the UN Intergovernmental Panel released in August 2021 issued a code red for humanity and warned that temperatures would continue to rise unless humans drastically cut CO2 emissions immediately. So, it should come as no surprise that the UK exceeded temperatures above 40°C for the first time since records began as well as experiencing the driest July since 1935.

The first step is to understand your household footprint by entering information into a carbon calculator such as https://footprint.wwf.org.uk/. The resulting pie chart will enable you to see exactly where you are generating the most emissions and provide guidance on how to reduce your footprint. In the UK, burning fossil fuels is the biggest contributor to emissions so insulating your home and switching to renewable energy will potentially have the biggest impact on lowering your emissions. It will provide a service which drives equality, diversity and inclusion for current users and new users.

“A huge part of what we’re trying to do in Buckinghamshire is reduce the harm caused by smoking. Although the numbers of smokers have reduced, nearly 10% of Buckinghamshire adults still smoke. Children copy what they see, so making parks and playgrounds smokefree will take smoking and vaping out of sight of children and make it seem less of a normal activity, helping us achieve our ambition of a smoke-free generation.”

The winners were presented with their prizes by Steve Bowles, Cabinet Member for Communities, (in photo, with children and teachers from the school) and will see their designs transformed into signs or displayed on social media.

Angela Macpherson, Cabinet Member for Adults and Health, who helped judge the competition, said: “We were thrilled with Stoke Mandeville Combined School’s response to our smoke-free design a sign competition and the standard was so high it made judging really difficult. We had entries from Reception through to Year 6 pupils.

“With that in mind, it’s great that pupils have understood this message and helped us design powerful and thought-provoking signs, which we can now use at playgrounds across Buckinghamshire.”

The pupils from Stoke Mandeville Combined School took part in a competition to design signs that discourage smoking and vaping near Buckinghamshire playgrounds. The designs of four creative pupils were chosen by the judges as the top entries. Two were commended and two winners were chosen from more than 50 entries. The children will see their drawings converted into signs displayed initially at their local playground on Eskdale Road. The two runners-up will have their designs shared on social media to spread the important message thanking people for not smoking where children play.

We will be running engagement days where you’ll be able to find out more, provide feedback on proposed designs and meet the project team with representatives from Buckinghamshire Libraries and Wendover Community Trust. These will be held at Wendover Library, High St, Wendover, Aylesbury HP22 6DU on: Thursday 15 September 2022, 9:30am5pm • Saturday 22 October 2022, 10am-4pm are also seeking an artist(s) who will be able to use a distinctive aspect of Wendover’s identity or heritage to create an installation that complements the architecture of the library building. The artist brief will be released on 30 August 2022. This will be advertised on https://www.artsjobs.org.uk/ Toartsjobshome/findout more contact library@ buckinghamshire.gov.uk and follow us on social•media.

Buckinghamshire Libraries received approximately £500,000 funding to transform Wendover Community Library into an inclusive, multi-use community hub that offers a single point of contact for local services. £310,000 of funding came from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) via the Arts Council England Libraries Improvement Fund (LIF). In addition to the Arts Council England funding, Buckinghamshire Council has agreed £120,000 of investment. Together with several smaller grants and contributions –including from Wendover Parish Council and Wendover Community Library Trust.

We want to hear from you, so please get involved and help shape the transformation of Wendover Library.

• Sustainability in terms of energy efficiency and having a future-proofed model.

The new library will provide: More flexible spaces by extending into the courtyard and having an additional meeting room. Visually aesthetic glass entrance to increase visibility and access Art installation informed by the community Additional accessibility with a sensory children's library and a dementia-friendly design New self-service digital technology to increase access outside of core hours

The idea for smoke-free playgrounds follows an aspiration in Buckinghamshire Council’s Tobacco Control Strategy to achieve a smokefree generation, protecting children from the harmful effects of tobacco. The council is aiming to create smoke- and vape-free spaces all around Buckinghamshire, particularly where children play, like parks and playgrounds, with the support of the organisations who own the spaces, such as parish councils. The work has already started with the Smoke Free Sidelines campaign discouraging smoking near youth football games.

Wendover and Villages Community Board worked closely with Stoke Mandeville Combined School and Stoke Mandeville Parish Council to run the competition, and the signs have been funded by Buckinghamshire Council. It is hoped that the project in partnership with Community Boards will be rolled out to a number of playgrounds and parks in Buckinghamshire.

Wendover Canal Trust Volunteers Required

Stephen Louis, Chair of Trustees said "Steve has been a Trustee of Youth Concern for over fifteen years and served as Chair between December 2012 and November 2016. During that time, he has been a progressive and dedicated leader and a much valued member of the trustee team. We are delighted that he has agreed to move on to this new role where his deep knowledge and connections in the community will be of great value to Youth Concern and will help us ensure that we serve all of our local community.”

Our events team was originally formed to run the annual Tring Canal Festivals and consisted of the partners of the committee and restoration workers. A good social bond was felt by all through participating in raising funds and advertising the canal to the local community. Unfortunately, the last festival was over 10 years ago, and the team has grown older. All support the trust but are now unable to assist in physical events. The Trust is looking for enthusiastic members to help in the future. Volunteers are needed to reactivate the outreach programme with the local schools as contacts were lost during the Covid outbreak. The Trust also needs a presence within the local community; this has been achieved in the past through attending festival events and designing library displays showing details of how much work is being Theseachieved.measures are a mandatory requirement by the funders of the future, i.e. Lottery Bids, and council community funds. It is essential to show that “Wendover in Water” will be an asset to all members of the local community. We hope you can help! We must keep the funds coming in to back our industrious and loyal restoration workers. Please contact: events@wendovercanal. org.uk if you are able to help or for further details. WCT volunteers. For over 40 years, Youth Concern has been helping young people aged 13-25, who are vulnerable and at risk by providing counselling, education, employment and housing support so they can live safe, happy and fulfilling lives and contribute positively to society.

About Youth Concern Youth Concern supports vulnerable 13-25 year olds across Aylesbury Vale. The charity’s experienced team of staff and volunteers offer a range of services including emotional support, counselling, food and care parcels, advocacy, help with employment, education and training, and practical assistance to deal with homelessness.

Following a meeting initiated by The Wendover Society, a community group has been formed with an eight-strong committee (two of which are Ukrainian guests). We are focusing on the practical, social, and emotional needs of guests and their hosts, drawing from other established groups and putting systems in place aiming to support guests and hosts from September.

We have received strong support so far from many organisations in Wendover, including the Churches, Wendover Society, Parish Council, and the Youth Centre. There are many ways which the people of Wendover & Villages can assist and support - donations of bicycles (and helmets), volunteers to help with social events, English teachers, administration support (form-filling) and befriending. If you can help in any way, or would like further information about the group, please get in touch with us at andrew@logicarchitect.co.uk.

Wendover & Villages

Ukrainian Support Group formed 30+ families in the Wendover and Villages area are hosting Ukrainian refugees and 80+ guests will be here by the end of the summer. Support groups have been set up to assist hosts and their guests, however there is nothing for the Wendover & Villages area, leaving guests to seek support further afield which is not sustainable.

Following a delicious supper, the Committee will present the Society’s Forward Plan, reflecting the priorities that Members have placed on the issues facing the community in areas

Following the review of the Forward Plan, the archivist and tour operator of Halton House will present the fascinating story of that magnificent home’s heritage. There has been a manor house on the site since the days of the Norman Conquest, but the present building was constructed between 1880 and 1883. It was sold to the RAF by the Rothschild family in 1918, since which time it has served as the Officer’s Mess for RAF Halton. As the plans for RAF Halton are still unclear, Halton House faces an uncertain future – and plenty for the archivist to comment on. Tickets are now available for the Harvest Supper. Reflecting our inflationary times, there will be a small increase in the cost of those tickets, to £22 per person. Station Commander, Group Captain Startup said: “How fantastic it is to have past generations of the Royal Air Force here today to recognise and celebrate both themselves and the next generation RAF. I am grateful to Viscount Trenchard, Rob Butler MP, Sir Dusty Millar KBE, the apprentices themselves and also to the RAF Falcons for their impressive parachute display and to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight for wonderful Lancaster flypast. In the last 100 years, the apprenticeships on offer from the RAF have changed dramatically but the award-winning scheme still offers many opportunities and numerous roles. Discussing the changes, Sir Dusty Miller KBE said: “The only constant in life is change – but what remains unchanged is the high value characteristics and personal attributes of those that join the Royal Air Force, and I am very proud to be here today and to continue to support the next generation RAF”.

Halton AssociationApprentices’Centenary

Rob Butler MP said: “I was delighted to attend the HAA centenary event on Saturday. Meeting some of the former apprentices who began their Air Force careers at Halton was an absolute privilege. It was wonderful to see what a special place it holds in their hearts, even many decades later. Hearing tales of past exploits and witnessing such camaraderieincredibleserved as a timely reminder of the debt we owe our Wingveterans.”Commander (Ret’d) Denton-Powell, HAA Chairman said: “RAF Halton is more than the alma mater for thousands of exapprentices, it is where we formed lasting friendships, developed character and above all began careers that so often spread into fields wider than aeronautical engineering. This was never more apparent than in talking to the Reunion attendees, some who had made long journeys to attend.”

On Saturday 6 August, RAF Halton were proud to host the Halton Apprentices’ Association Centenary event. (The event was delayed due to COVID-19).

Event

The Royal Air Force Apprentice scheme began in 1920, having been devised by Chief of the Air Staff Hugh Trenchard and approved by Winston Churchill. Boys from the age of 15 took a series of highly competitive exams and tests, and the select few were invited to join the most exclusive boarding school of its time. RAF apprentices were an elite band who went on to hold some of the highest ranks in the Royal Air Force and made huge contributions to their country and the wider world. With over 700 in attendance on Saturday, veterans and their guests were able to attend a service at The Church of St George before gathering at the Henderson Parade Square where they could visit the Trenchard Museum and enjoy being back among the buildings they knew so well.

Visitors, including VIPs Viscount Trenchard, Rob Butler MP and Air Marshal (Ret’d) Sir ‘Dusty’ Miller KBE were treated to a display by the world premier parachute team, the RAF Falcons, and also a flypast from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight who swooped over the parade square in a TheLancaster.most significant part of the day was the parade where entries lined up in order and marched once more around the parade square where the Station Commander took the salute accompanied by Viscount Trenchard who addressed the parade and expressed how proud his grandfather Lord Trenchard would have been. He said: “I am honoured to be your guest today. RAF Halton is the spiritual home of the Apprentices, and I am delighted my grandfather’s legacy is still so strong”.

“I live locally in the Chilterns and have immediate family that have suffered with both MS and other neuro conditions,” said Karen. “I understand the challenges for both the patient and their loved ones so am looking forward to working as a trustee with the charity as it moves forward to provide support to more people.”

"I am delighted that Karen is joining us and bringing with her an incredible range of experience," said Henry Snow, Chair of Trustees at the Chilterns MS Centre. "The Centre has an exciting time ahead as we open up to other neurological conditions. The skills and expertise Karen has will be crucial to guiding us through this."

The Chilterns MS Centre is a charity supporting people with multiple sclerosis through a range of treatments such as physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, oxygen therapy and a range of leisure groups. Just as importantly there is a café serving tea and cake. More recently the charity has begun a pilot programme to open up its service to people with other neurological conditions, starting with Parkinson’s Disease.

New Trustee Chilterns MS Centre

The Chilterns MS Centre will be hosting a Starlight Ball on Saturday 19 November at Pendley Manor in Tring to help raise valuable funds for the Wendover-based charity.

The Chilterns MS Centre is pleased to welcome Karen Cross to its Board of Trustees to help oversee the running of the Wendover-based charity. Karen brings with her extensive experience from working most of her corporate life at Microsoft in their database division, initially in technical roles, then product management and business and industry management. Over those years she gained a wealth of experience in marketing and the importance of understanding the customer, along with building team management and business skills. More recently she has set up her own business as a residential landlord.

The black tie event at the stunning Hertfordshire venue is one of the main fundraising events held by the Centre, although Covid 19 has prevented it from taking place in recent years. Now that it’s back, the great location, great food and great entertainment means it will be the perfect night out with friends, family or colleagues, all while supporting a local charity.

It was with great sadness that Wendover learned of the death of Angie Smith who passed away on 28 June 2022, aged just 56. Angie was the owner of Red Carpet Hairdressing on Aylesbury Road which opened its doors to the public 14 years ago in February 2008. Since then, Red Carpet has thrived at the centre of Wendover, cutting the hair of many residents, and employing many local people within the salon. A firm believer in giving back, Angie and the team have over the years, donated a lot of their time to local charities, hosted numerous Macmillan coffee mornings and gifted a variety of prizes to fundraisers in the area.

Taking place on Sunday 11 September, the dog-friendly challenge offers walkers a choice of routes through the stunning Chilterns countryside. Walkers are encouraged to choose one of four available routes – between 6.5 and 18 miles long - and seek sponsorship to raise vital funds for Rennie Grove’s specialist nursing care.

Ross said: “It’s an honour for our charity to be nominated for this award. I would like to dedicate it to all our volunteers, supporters and everyone who has helped us throughout the years to educate and inspire others.”

• 8 mile self-guided circular route taking in Whiteleaf Cross. This option includes mapped directions so walkers can make their own way around the route at their own pace.

Starting from Princes Risborough School, the route options are:

Ross is the 1954th person to receive the Prime Minister’s UK daily Points of Light award, which was first launched in April 2014 to recognise outstanding individuals making a difference where they live. Each day, someone, somewhere in the country is selected to receive the award to celebrate their remarkable achievements.

• 6.5 mile linear route which tackles Whiteleaf Cross and Coombe Hill (followed by a bus route back to the start at Princes Risborough School).

• 10 mile linear route which gives walkers the opportunity to complete all three peaks (Whiteleaf Cross, Coombe Hill and Ivinghoe Beacon) with a bus journey between Wendover and Tring station taking out some of the miles.

• 18-mile linear route is the complete route from Princes Risborough School to the top of Ivinghoe Beacon walking all three local landmarks. All routes include a bus ride back to the start at Princes Risborough School, thanks to Arriva buses which has once again kindly donated the use of its vehicles and volunteer drivers for the day.

Tickets for this family-friendly event cost £15 per adult (16+) and £7.50 for children (5-16) with under 5s free on all routes. Family tickets are available (two adults and up to four children) for £40. Everybody who completes the challenge receives a medal on the day.

This year’s event is kindly sponsored by headline sponsor, Origin Doors and Windows, which has supported the event for five years, as well as new sponsor for 2022, R. Benson.

A London firefighter and astronomy lover from Buckinghamshire who set up a charity, ‘UK Astronomy' in 2016 to engage more people in learning about astronomy and coming together through a shared love of stargazing, was honoured to receive Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s Points of Light award.

Ross Hockham is a completely self-taught astronomer and wanted to encourage other people to take greater interest in studying the skies and use astronomy as a tool for bringing people together. Starting off as a Facebook group which now has over 25,000 members and has become a registered charity, ‘UK Astronomy’ provides interactive talks, workshops, and events, including running visits to schools, care homes and local community groups across Buckinghamshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire, and hosting star-gazing sessions from his mobile observatory. Ross also runs monthly photo competitions, a podcast, and sky guides, and is about to launch a new service with a mobile inflatable planetarium to help further educate children, students, community groups and event participants.

Susan

Wendover News September 2022www.wendovernews.co.uk 01296 624270 editor@wendovernews.co.uk 29

Come November, Susan is invited into John Hampden School, to talk to pupils about road safety as the darker months approach. They have great fun wearing a small fluorescent coat and holding the lollipop. Susan refers to it as her "Fame for a day" session.

Susan (Hobson) West was born in 1965 in High Wycombe so she is a Buckinghamshire girl who attended Castlefield Middle School and Cressex Secondary School. She started work at 16 as a sewing machinist in a furniture factory and stayed for 18 years. So far, all very typical. She met Simon West in 1992, moving to Wendover in 1996 and changed to making harnesses for ejector seats at the iconic Martin-Baker Aircraft Ltd in Denham.

Local Face:

Simon introduced Susan to the joys of boating in general and sailing in particular. He is currently restoring a family heirloom - the yacht his family used when he was growing up. Meanwhile there is a collection of boats in their front garden. In 1998 the couple married in St Mary's Wendover, and spent their honeymoon on a Greek flotilla holiday. With their 25th anniversary on the horizon, will they be able to repeat that experience in some shape or form? Their children, Matthew and Emily, attended local schools: John Hampden Infants, Wendover Junior and John Colet and their background always encouraged them to be sporty and fall in love with sailing. Susan has supported these schools ever since, first as a Mid-day Supervisor, then for half a term as an LSA before she was recruited as a much needed School Crossing Patroller (lollipop lady), a role she has filled for 13 years. She loves her job, making sure both children and their accompanying adults are able to cross Wharf Road safely before and after school. Her job is clearly vital because on occasion, she covers two other traffic blackspots: Lower Road, outside Stoke Mandeville Combined School where she has a traffic island to contend with and Bedgrove School where there are always two SCPs because of the traffic. In Wendover, most drivers understand the need for caution when a large number of children need to cross a busy road. Many people have told Susan that they specifically avoid using Wharf Road and Manor Road at certain times because they do not want to drive a car near so many young children.

Once completed, Wendover Parish Council will be responsible for the upkeep of the grounds to the curtilage of the bow top fencing and the annual safety inspections following installation.

Another part of ‘championing all things which make Wendover unique’ involves us creating a ‘I love Wendover’ campaign and Wendover Parish Council are seeking local designers to pitch ideas to us to produce items such as shopping bags, t-shirts, stickers, signage, caps etc for sale in the local shops and online, and also for the Council to produce them for community events eg: Wendover Celebrates & Christmas, for example. If you are keen to be part of this local pride initiative, please get in touch with admin@wendover-pc.gov.uk and we will provide further information about the requirements. News responding one

Now that planning has been agreed, at time of going to press, the works on the new playpark are expected to begin 22 August, providing all pieces of equipment have arrived. The job is planned to complete in four weeks.

The MOD Police and Thames Valley Police along with the local school are supporting and promoting this installation. They will assist where they can in minimising any damage during installation and going forwards.

‘Welcome to Wendover’ new Parish website

Wendover News September 2022 Please mention Wendover

At the Annual Parish Meeting in April, we promised parishioners that the Council would be working hard to ‘champion all things which make Wendover unique’ and one of the key elements to this is the creation of a new website which aggregates all useful information about everything which makes Wendover (and its surroundings) so wonderful to live & work in and visit, too. We have launched the beta version of the website, but our current Parish Council website continues to run as usual until such time that this new one is fully launched. We would appreciate any useful feedback on it before we officially launch it in September. If you would like your organisation/ business/information on the site please do get in touch on admin@wendover-pc.gov.uk ‘I love Wendover’ campaign
