HS2 update The WPC HS2 working group has had a busy few weeks. Lord Berkeley has, through a few strategically placed questions in the House, learnt that while government was telling us and Rob Butler MP that there was no way to “reopen the Act” for Wendover, at Bromford in Warwickshire the DfT is asking for a Transport and Works Act Order to substantially extend tunnelling there. The impetus behind the change at Bromford apparently came from the construction consortium up there, BBV. EKFB has always been “encouraged” by HS2/DfT to only deliver to the Act. So even if the Wendover tunnel is the greatest "good idea" ever, it’s not in their gift. Lord Berkeley has also been involved in a House of Lords debate on HS2 phase 2. He was able to use the way that Wendover has been treated as an example of poor practice by HS2/DfT.
We have received a response to our Freedom of Information Act (FOI) request. As with many of these things what is left out is as interesting as what is left in. A classic example is on the construction programme. The DfT/HS2 have always insisted that our tunnel took longer to build. It’s not the case and, on 8 December 2017 a document shows that it was possible to mitigate the risk of delay. By 10 April 2019 this has morphed into an unacceptable significant delay. No reason is apparent but HS2/DfT have clung to that negative interpretation ever since.
evaluate our scheme looks like a number made up by someone who didn’t want to do the job. We’re told that £80k is more realistic. It is an interesting insight into government thinking that a proposal that saves the AONB, simplifies the most complex section of construction outside of an urban area, saves time and £300,000,000 isn’t worth even that modest investment.
On a local operational level we have received complaints that HS2 vehicles are being driven aggressively in the Bowood Lane area. This has been reported to Fusion’s community engagement team. We have also had sight of responses from Action is promised. the Minister triggered by two letters, one written by us and a quite excellent one written by Rob Butler MP. The responses All of the letters referred to here can do reinforce the feeling that Wendover be found on the WPC website, www. has not been treated fairly in this matter. wendover-pc.gov.uk. Thank You Wonderful Wendover Wonderful is not a word that has been used often in 2020, but we want to use it today. It has been wonderful to see how our community has come together and the outpouring of support you have given to us. Back in March the future looked bleak: we honestly weren’t sure how we’d survive and if Rumsey’s would make it through until Christmas. We are most definitely still here. We have our full team of wonderful chocolatiers and baristas back and the challenges of 2020 are serving to make us stronger. Christmas is our favourite time of year, we love being a part of so many of your festive traditions. Whilst it might be a bit different this year, we will do all we can to help you make it… wonderful. Rumsey’s Handmade Chocolates www.wendovernews.co.uk

Club Corner BBOWT Standing by for Action
Wendover Choral Society
Wendover Choral Society resumed rehearsals on 1 October and hope to sing every Thursday evening into December. Numbers fluctuate but we are mainly meeting as 2 separate choirs of up to 12 singers each for two 50 minute rehearsals at the Wendover Memorial Hall. As you will see from the photographs, singers are positioned 5 metres from the conductor, 2.5 metres apart with 3 metres between each of the 3 rows. Strict protocols are followed and close-fitting masks are worn at all times, inside and outside the hall. It's a bit of a military operation but we are all enjoying being able to sing together once more, despite the discomfort of wearing masks. At the moment, we are singing a selection of English Part Songs. Some of our members are joining us on Zoom. We have a few spaces available. New singers are very welcome, particularly bass and tenor voices. Singers are advised to wrap up well as all the windows and doors are wide open throughout the evening! If anyone is interested they should email mheald21@gmail.com. Editor's note: The article above was written before Lockdown 2; please contact mheald21@gmail.com if you'd like to find out more about Wendover Choral Society.

Once the current restrictions are lifted we shall welcome everyone who would like to try their hands at conservation work on our reserves. Winter is the time to clear scrub that encroaches on the chalk grassland where orchids and gentians flower in summer and to cut the brambles back from paths. It's a sociable activity in the fresh air so give it a go by checking with the local wardens on bbowt.org/volunteering to see what sessions have been organised at Dancersend, College Lake, Aston Clinton Ragpits and Bacombe Hill. On Tuesday 15 December at 7.45pm we shall have our next online talk via Zoom. John Tyler, photographer and naturalist, will show his amazing close-up pictures, as always with a generous dose of humour, in 'Nature in a Nutshell.' Please sign up online by going to bbowt.org/events. Many thanks to all who supported our Plant Market at College Lake on 18 October - it made a profit of £1037 for BBOWT. The plan is to keep the reserve open in December from Wednesday till Sunday from 11am to 3pm with a break from Christmas to New Year. The café will continue to serve for consumption outside and it is hoped that we can open the shop too from 5 December. Please get in touch with any queries. richardbirch60@yahoo.com
more ambitious and embarked down that tried and trusted route of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. These were put on in the old John Colet School Hall which had a proper stage and lighting before the rebuild. Peter Nichols and Tony Coldwell put aside being grocers at Nichols stores to paint amazing scenes for us which used to arrive on dozens of rolls of heavy wallpaper to be put together like jigsaw puzzles. Every thing from ships at sea to castles and gypsy encampments, nothing seemed beyond them. In those heady days we used to put more than forty people on the stage and sometimes did four performances and a matinée during show week. Sadly, like so many other amateur organisations, our numbers dwindled and the cost of putting on shows spiralled. Our last staged production, in 2007, Ruddigore, cost over £5000. Still we went out with a bang as The National Operatic and Dramatic Association awarded us the prestigious Flame Award for our efforts. Though G & S has been our bread and butter, we have done many other productions such as Merrie England and Gypsy Baron. One of our most ambitious was Happy as a Sandbag, a wartime revue with three stages each lit on rotation as scenes were changed.
Nowadays we put on two revues a year at Halton Village Hall. These are intimate evening entertainments with the audience at tables and encouraged to join some of the numbers. Wendover Bowls Club
11+ Coaching in Wendover
I was thinking back to an outdoor game I played last summer. It was triples, so three bowlers on each side. One of our players had a damaged shoulder and was having difficulty reaching long jacks and we were being well beaten. Then I noticed the other team in a bit of a huddle and they agreed among themselves that they would keep to short jacks to make more of a game of it. I have no doubt that they would have gone back to their normal game if we had threatened their lead but I found it a splendid sporting gesture. I also know that this would not have happened if it had been a game against another club and not an internal match.
Just as we were managing to get a few games played indoors here we are back in lockdown. At least the news of a vaccine gives us a little hope but it will be some time Well, by the next report we should have before things are back to normal. come out of lockdown and, fingers crossed, Half the fun of bowls is the banter during the Club will be able to get back to normal in matches and in the changing room but the new year. Business Forum Tims Dairy new Greek-style Kefir
In a first for the Kefir category, Chiltern Hills based yogurt producer Tims Dairy have launched Greek style Kefir. Available in Natural, and Coconut flavour, it combines the healthy benefits of Kefir with the mild taste and luxury texture of Tims Dairy award-winning Greek style yogurt. These gut friendly, bio-live Kefirs are also lactose free and made using fresh British milk, in full support of UK farmers. They contain natural ingredients and 12 active live cultures. There is no added sugar in the Natural. In another first for Tims Dairy, each 450g pot is made from 100% recycled PET. Working with UK manufacturer, Faerch UK Ltd, the pot is 100% recycled and recyclable and comes enrobed in a 100% recyclable carton board sleeve and foil lid. The PET pot can be recycled again and again at end of life back into new yogurt pots, and the sleeve and foil lid can be separated into their respective recycling streams. The Covid crisis has seen a renewed consumer focus on the health benefits of Kefir and bio-
live yogurt and an increase in demand for gut friendly foods – and our new Kefir is great for home baking too. “The trend for Kefir has grown hugely in the last year, but our research showed that consumers wanted a version that was thicker and creamier. I’m delighted to say that, together with a milder taste, that is exactly what we have achieved,” says Managing Director Chris Timotheou. This Kefir is scrumptious as a snack on its own or goes perfectly with fruit, berries, cereal, and whizzed up with tropical fruits to make a wholesome smoothie. It's also perfect for gut friendly dressings and stirred into soups, stews or dips. Available in most branches of Waitrose and in Sweeney's Budgens of Wendover.

HS2 and Me Rennie Grove Memorial Wood I have a dilemma.
I love things wooden and I love trees – always have done. So about 14 years ago when I heard that Iain Rennie Hospice at Home (now Rennie Grove) had this money raising idea I was interested. It was the beginning of a lovely relationship that has endured since. The idea was to create a small woodland which was funded by donations while at the same time providing a Remembrance Woodland for people to go to meditate and remember loved family members and friends who had passed away. At that time there had been quite a flurry of deaths close to me and it was taking me a seriously long time to recover from the difficulties that this had caused. One was a suicide, one was a hospital error and one was old age. It was therefore important to me that I could go somewhere to remember the good times and come to terms with it all.
could have friendly banter with walkers on the 3 Peaks Challenge. I also operated the dog gate and let through hundreds of dogs at a time.
through a mined tunnel – a very reasonable request it seems to me and one that makes complete sense.
In October HS2 announced they were taking possession of the Memorial Woodland so I ventured out with my saw and rescued the Memorial plaque that told visitors what the woodland was all about. My mother was a vociferous campaigner against the junction of the M23/M25 in Surrey. Her haunts in her younger days were all round the Chipstead Valley. That valley no longer exists in name, as it is buried under tonnes and tonnes of concrete. As a keen and budding ornithologist and botanist she was appalled at the destruction of the environment. I remember when the Newbury bypass was being built and she admitted to being quite envious of Swampy and the waves he made when he lived in the trees in his attempt to prevent the bypass being built. One of the trees in the RGHC Woodland was in memory of my mother who was taken from us in 1993. She would be with me writing this article on the destruction that HS2 is causing – not just in Wendover – but right along the line. Happier days, newly planted Wood with supporters, 2010
It took about 5 years to fund and plant the Wood – on land owned by the well known local farming Getley family. The Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge was becoming an important part of the Iain Rennie Fundraising calendar. I volunteered to be a marshal at a gate at the top of the field that was next to the field that the woodland was in. The view epitomised to me the beauty of the Chilterns and it was my favourite spot where I could muse or I

Wendover News December 2020
Move on a few years and the dreaded spectre of HS2 arrived. Hence my dilemma! I love railways – they allow you to see the countryside as the train passes through. They get you to places. However, HS2 is fast (too fast, some might say) ripping up what’s left of the countryside.
It's expensive, it's noisy, it's ugly and there will be enough capacity on the existing network especially during and after COVID-19. The only people who want it seem to either be those with self interest or the odd few in the North who feel that it will help the Northern economy recover. At the very least Wendover wants the train to go
In conclusion, I really hope the plaque can be resited in Wendover, at a place where people can go and remember loved ones; in a place that is not too far from the route of the 3 Peaks walk. At least HS2 will not be taking away the stile and dog gate - although they have already wrecked the view. Bob Duggan

Christmas Letters and Cards
On page 19 of the August print edition of Wendover News, photographs featured eight sets of people representing the Isle of Man stamps to remind us of the efforts made to combat the Coronavirus in lockdown. These were people who had somehow risen to the challenge presented by this strange time. Young people from St Mary's Church and Wendover Youth Centre
wrote letters to members of the Wendover Community who were isolated, hence they were identified with "Words". This experience was enjoyed by all concerned (to the surprise of some). Designer Ben Glazier managed to secure a set of these stamps for each young pen pal as a memento of the period. Letter writing has evolved into sending Christmas Cards in December. Well done to all for the creativity and effort involved.
In what has been a difficult year and one full of uncertainty, from everyone here at Kings Farm Shop we would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our customers, regular and new, for their continued support throughout the last nine months. With Christmas just around the corner we are now taking orders. Things are going to be a little different this Christmas but we will do everything we can to make sure it is still a special one for you and your family. Placing your order early will help us towards guaranteeing your Christmas order as stock may well be limited this year.

Mansion Hill Closure
See also page 10. Right in the middle of the second Coronavirus lockdown, without any public consultation, the MOD closed the car park at Mansion Hill. Albeit that we are being urged to improve our Wellbeing by walking and cycling the much used car park was taken out of public use. The car park was valued because it accessed so many walks in Wendover Woods and it’s too far for many dog walkers to reach the woods on a daily basis, on foot. I have requested officers at County Hall to speak to the RAF and see if a compromise can be reached, by keeping the entrance road free of parked cars and asking the public to be considerate. What a shame that the MOD has not consulted us before taking action, as we try hard to accommodate their needs in the life of our community!

Rob Butler, MP Coronavirus
The first thing I want to do is thank everyone in the Wendover community who has been working so hard to keep to the new coronavirus restrictions. Their introduction came as a blow to us all; I fully appreciate that the past weeks have been especially difficult and am grateful for your continued patience and commitment to combatting this horrendous virus. While we must ensure the NHS can carry out its work, I remain firm in my belief that we should remove restrictions as soon as possible - for the sake of our economy, our livelihoods, our mental health, our liberty and our democracy.
HS2
We all know that Wendover will be one of the villages worst affected by HS2 in the country. Ever since my election last December I have consistently pushed the government and senior managers at HS2 Ltd to get the best possible mitigation for local people.
Since the summer recess, I have again pressed ministers to reconsider the entire HS2 project, especially in light of the coronavirus pandemic. Sadly, but predictably, they have refused. Similarly, the government has repeatedly rejected calls for a bored mined tunnel in Wendover; I asked the Prime Minister himself about this in the House of Commons and have tried to find ways of enabling a tunnel to be built without having to reopen the HS2 Act. Sadly, this has been to no avail. While I share the belief that a tunnel would be the optimum solution for Wendover, I sincerely believe that my responsibility now is to find the best mitigation that can be achieved. Accordingly, I am working with the Wendover HS2 Group to address noise pollution and am pleased that HS2 Ltd has agreed a technical meeting to consider the group’s proposals. I have also challenged HS2 Ltd about potential
harm to bats at Jones Hill Woods, and been assured that no tree clearances will take place before an ecological survey is carried out. I keep a running log of all actions relating to HS2 on my website, and will continue to hold HS2 Ltd’s feet to the fire to ensure they abide by their commitments to the residents of Wendover.
Happy Christmas
The end of the year is always a time for reflection. 2020 has given us almost too much to contemplate; few of us will remember it with fondness. Thankfully, there is a glimmer of hope for the new year, with the prospect of a Covid vaccine on the horizon that could herald a return to happier, more normal times. Let us hold onto that optimism through this unusual festive season, and may I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas. Rob Butler, MP

Noise, water, traffic etc – big problems for Wendover
The Wendover HS2 Mitigation Action Group remains fully supportive of the Parish Council’s efforts to achieve a mined tunnel, whilst in parallel has a clear mission to achieve the maximum possible mitigation for Wendover. We have the backing of our local MP Rob Butler who has been extremely supportive and also our Prime Minister who is sympathetic to our cause, as a regular visitor to our market town. He has specifically instructed his Minister of Transport and HS2 Ltd. to constructively collaborate with us, and as a result we are making considerable progress with our alternative mitigation solutions, continuing to hold HS2/EKFB/Fusion to account as their works continue around us daily.
Here is a summary of what is happening… Noise & Flooding There remains a very real threat of flooding from slicing through the Coombe Hill aquifer for a kilometre, with significant damage to
the Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), flooding towards Aylesbury and significant loss of water to the Weston Turville reservoir. HS2 have just started work to check the ground conditions to see how HS2 drilling wells to check water levels at they need to change Folly Bridge, N Wendover the design.
Environment & Traffic Archaeology works continue near the Ellesborough Road Memorial Wood. HS2 have warned that more trees and hedgerows will be removed in the area as an extension of the works, which we understand have revealed evidence of a 6th Century settlement. Call for more Bucks residents to volunteer to help COVID-19 efforts
Buckinghamshire Volunteer Matching Service is recruiting countywide with particular need in Wycombe, Missendens and Chesham areas The Buckinghamshire Volunteer Matching Service is calling for Bucks residents to signup as volunteers to help support local people and communities during the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. The Volunteer Matching Service, which is run by Community Impact Bucks in partnership with Buckinghamshire Council and The Clare Foundation, matches registered volunteers to roles where they are most needed in the county. It is looking for volunteers from across the county but in particular for volunteers from the High Wycombe, Missendens and Chesham areas. In Spring 2020, more than 1,800 people from Buckinghamshire signed up to volunteer via the Buckinghamshire Council website to support local communities during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, the recovery

As a result, we are looking for new volunteers to step forward to support COVID-19 response activities.
Gareth Williams, Cabinet Member for Communities and Public Health, said: “We have a strong tradition of volunteering in Buckinghamshire and we know people find it a very rewarding experience. Our three days of Christmas festivities equate to 5.5% of the UK’s annual total carbon footprint. So, this month let’s consider our impact on the environment and take small steps that help steer us towards more environmentally friendly Christmas traditions. Cut down on waste Collectively, we bin 230,000 tonnes of unneeded Christmas treats, the equivalent of 74 million mince pies. Why not start by making a meal plan and sticking to a shopping list to minimise food wastage. Ahead of Christmas, free up space in your freezer so if you do have unused food you can pop it in the freezer for another occasion.

According to the Carbon Trust, artificial trees have a carbon footprint of around 40kg of CO2, whereas a real tree that is locally sourced and then recycled has a 3.5kg carbon footprint. Instead of sending your used Christmas tree to landfill consider turning it into mulch or compost for the garden.
Small changes make a difference There are numerous small changes that collectively will make a huge difference to reducing the carbon footprint of Christmas. Get creative when wrapping presents by reusing bags, boxes and fabrics or buying paper that can be recycled. Millions of plastic trinkets in crackers are binned at the end of About £4bn is wasted on unwanted presents Christmas lunch so consider buying reusable every year. Retired Squadron Leader, Alexander Gilbert DFC, has been appointed to the rank of ‘Chevalier in the Order National de la Legion d’Honneur,’ after receiving notification by the French Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Ms Catherine Colonna. The award is France’s highest honour of merit, which recognises military and civilians alike. It states that: “This Honour recognises military engagement and steadfast involvement in the Liberation of France during WW2.” His career began in the RAF in late 1940, doing six months at Kirkham and qualified as an airframes fitter. After a very varied flying career and assisting the liberation of France during WW2, on retirement he was offered a post at RAF Halton and completed ten years of service as Wing Admin Officer on the Herts and Bucks ATC. He finally hung up his uniform in 1986 after 45 years of service. Sqn Ldr Gilbert was invited to RAF Halton to have tea with the Station Commander, Group Captain Dan Startup, and Station Executives in Halton House and brought his medal and insignia to show. Whilst he was here Wing Commander Ian Hough gave a short talk about the changes to the RAF and RAF Halton over the years Sqn Ldr Gilbert served and up to the present day.
Community Bacon Buttie Event
The Trinity Community Centre (TCC) welcomed the whole force to a socially distanced bacon buttie morning in October to encourage communication between everyone at RAF Halton, to assist us all through this difficult time and to allow the community to get to know key personnel at RAF Halton. Representatives from RAF Police were also in attendance to answer any concerns or questions anyone had regarding RAF Halton and the wider community, and to explain their role within the RAF Halton community. The event, which required time slots to be booked, was such a success that the Station Commander, Group Captain Startup, completed his food handling certificate to ensure he could participate in the next event! The Community Support Team will now hold regular bacon buttie events to provide the community with a regular opportunity to meet with friends, speak to the team and learn more about what is happening across the Unit, with the added bonus of great food too!

Tribute: Reginald Simmons 15 October 1932 - 28 October 2020
Reg Simmons was born in York Cottages on Old Tring Road, the fifth of nine children. Not surprisingly, he attended Wendover School, by the Clock Tower, and became the centre of many friendship groups. In later life, that love of a good story led him to take up “residence” sitting on his favourite Manor Waste bench where he was famously a great raconteur, his secret being that he was also a great listener. His father, Percy, was a plasterer so when Reg left school he was apprenticed to his father and they worked together for many years. Reg then went on to work for Wrights of Great Missenden until he retired in 1997. Reg’s great love throughout his life was sport. He played football for the Wendover first team as a winger. His nickname “Swifty” demonstrates that he was nimble on his feet. He was also a member of Wendover Cricket Club, where he was renowned as a fast bowler. In the late 1960s he and his brother Brian joined Halton Golf Club (now Chiltern Forest) and spent 40 happy years playing. He pursued individual as well as organised sport. As a youngster he would go sea fishing with his brother Dave. Sometimes they caught a conger eel, brought it home and put
it in the bath to be salted and cooked for the whole family to eat. He also enjoyed coarse fishing in the many local reservoirs which allow it. In his prime, Reg was seen on his bicycle all over Wendover but he used to go on long distance rides with his friend Dennis Hearn. Deep Conger eels from a into retirement his sea-fishing trip mobility declined so that he needed his bike to support him eventually, in his walk from home to central Wendover. It was a cruel blow to him when someone stole his bike and thereby stole his ability to meet his friends independently in the great outdoors. He loved market day and delighted in the company of Nigel, the market manager, and Vic Lay who also died recently, see page 11. In retirement, Vic and Reg had great days out using their free bus passes to take day trips to local towns such as Watford, Hemel Hempstead and High Wycombe. While there, they took to visiting a Wetherspoons

or similar for lunch and a pint. Reg was also well known in local hostelries. In younger days, his favourite was The George as it was called then, near the Clock Tower. On a visit to the King and Queen he met a lady from Pitsone and they became companions for many years. More recently he became fond of The Shoulder of Mutton. After his mother, Elsie, died in 1986, Reg moved to Vinetrees where he became a full member of that community.

Reg was very sociable so he will be sorely missed by many in Wendover, not least his four siblings, Norman, Ruth, Velda and Brian, who survive him. Reg’s funeral took place on Monday 16 November. Donations can be made via reginaldsimmons.muchloved.com to Prostate Cancer.

Local Face: Tony Ounsworth When Tony was born in Hull towards the end of the 2nd World War his brother was 2 and his sister 1. Dad was in and out of hospital with TB hip so life was not easy for Mam and became much worse when Dad died in 1952 and she subsequently developed a serious illness called acromegaly. However despite the shortage of money she did not drag them out of school to go down the pit - just as well as there aren’t any in Hull - and they all went on to further education, brother and sister becoming teachers. Tony studied French with a bit of German and Russian on an experimental course at Ealing Technical College intended to turn out translators. When Tony finished in 1967 he was desperate for a job as he was getting married 3 months later to Lin whom he had met in 1963 when she started going out with his best friend. She lived in the next street to Tony. He joined a French bank, Société Générale, as a clerk, thinking that it would do for 3 months or so until something better came along, as he didn’t really want to commute or work for a bank. He left 37 years later having done lots of different jobs including programmer, head of IT and Operations Manager. In 1973 the bank moved the department Tony was then in out of London to Stony Stratford so they had to move from Guildford and thankfully ended up in Wendover. When the decentralisation programme failed and Tony was moved back to London this meant that they didn’t have to move house again. Richard, their son, was 6 months old when they came to Wendover and Louise arrived in 1975. They both went to the local schools then the Grammar and High School. Richard is a Catholic Priest in the Dominican Order
and Louise is a teacher. She lives in Old Aylesbury with husband Paul, who was a classmate of Richard, and children Patrick, just 17, and Katie who is nearly 15. They now go to the Grammar and High as well.
In 2015, Tony and Lin committed to “continue volunteering as long as we are able” in Shelflife, the Friends of Wendover Library Newsletter
Tony loved Wendover straight away. It had everything he needed: a Catholic Church, library, railway station, bank, and a friendly local, the Two Brewers, where they played dominoes which Tony loved. He soon got in a school there and later on in the White Swan where he was still playing until lockdown in March. Tony got involved at St Anne’s joining the Church Committee and doing the books for a number of years and from the late 80s was on the joint Management Committee with the Free Church, taking and typing many sets of minutes. He eventually resigned last year after 30 years. Tony also started playing squash, quite badly, when the local court was built until he had to stop after a back operation in 1995. Tony reached retirement age at the bank in 2005 though he did 3 weeks’ consultancy work for them in that summer. To start with he did nothing extra after retirement, just unwound and enjoyed not having to traipse to Tower Hill every day. He then decided to

join the small Saint Anne’s Conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society. After the required DBS check he was then able to visit lonely people in their own homes which he found immensely rewarding, especially if he knew that the person he was visiting wouldn’t see anybody else that week. He also joined the local volunteers committee at Abbeyfield in Dobbins Lane so he visits there as well and helps out occasionally at fund raising events such as the charity coffee mornings. Tony is also a trustee of St Anne’s Hall. For a number of years Lin and Tony looked after Patrick and Katie one day a week and they loved doing that though he did get fed up of listening to Dora the Explorer on the way to and from school, and was pretty tired after thrashing Patrick in the Hull City v Arsenal games at the park. Yes, OK, Patrick was only 8. When the library became a Community Library Lin and Tony both volunteered and in normal times work on the counter. They both thoroughly enjoy it and are looking forward to it being open properly again. At Lin’s suggestion Tony did Italian at night class as they love Italy and try to visit at least once a year. Over the last few years they have increased their travelling including Australia twice and Canada once. They have also done a few river trips in Europe and enjoyed many short breaks in this country. Tony spends a lot of time doing crosswords and other puzzles to keep himself sane but others may have a different view. Wendover is a wonderful place to live and Tony can’t see them ever moving away. So as Tony says, “You are lumbered with us.”

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page
View from the Chair
The Wendover Good Neighbour Scheme (WGNS) helped a lot of people through Lockdown 1. The simple ethos of neighbour looking after neighbour, a bit of shopping, a prescription or two and all delivered with a kind word showed our community in the very best light. None of the wardens joined up to get recognition but, as the Rolling Stones song goes “You can’t always get what you want.” Wendover has won a Proud of Bucks Award for its warden scheme. I’m to accept it but I don’t do that on behalf of the WPC or any single organisation. I do it for you, the people of Wendover. The wardens and drivers that went the extra mile to help out. The Wendover Youths and the Food Bank and for all of you who stayed home, stayed safe and prevented the NHS being swamped.

Awards
This year the Wendover Community Awards were done a bit differently. The community were invited to nominate their heroes and an independent selection panel made up of individuals from local businesses, schools, sports clubs, emergency services and the community assembled to ensure an unbiased result. Unfortunately, the award ceremony, which was originally planned to take place in April at the Annual Parish Meeting, was cancelled due to coronavirus. However, on Wednesday 28 October the Parish Council were able to present the awards outside Budgens on Manor Waste. Please visit the webpage www.wendover-pc. gov.uk/post/wendover-community-awards-1 to view the award winners for each category.

Wendover Produce Market Saturday 19 December, 9am to 1pm Manor Waste Christmas Trees on the High Street
Despite the annual Christmas Celebration on Manor Waste being cancelled this year due to coronavirus, to keep some Christmas cheer alive, the Parish Council have decided to fund the mini Christmas trees located every year along the High Street in Wendover, instead of the High Street businesses. It has been a difficult time for all our local businesses and the Parish Council wanted to support them, ensuring that every business that purchased a mini Christmas tree in 2019 will receive a free one in 2020. Furthermore, on behalf of the community, a very big thank you to No.2 Pound Street for generously sponsoring the 18ft Christmas tree on Manor Waste this year!
