Wendover Christmas Celebration

Wendover Parish Council was really in the swing with the Christmas Celebration on Wednesday 4 December. A very friendly Christmas Market, Halton Singers, Mix 96, prizes, John Colet School musicians and Late Night Shopping is clearly a winning mixture. For more stories from the night, please see page 20 and Matters Arising page 32.

Lionel Abel-Smith Trust

The Trust was established in 1977 when Lionel Abel-Smith, Lord of the Manor of Wendover, gave the village a number of properties in Pound Street. His wish was that the rental income be used to support organisations and individuals in Wendover. Over the years, more than £1.5 million has been awarded in grants and loans. The Trustees will hold their 42nd Annual Meeting on Wednesday 29 April 2020 to consider grant applications from individuals and organisations from within the parish of Wendover and the Moor Park Estate. Applications must be received by Friday 28 February with full contact details and, if possible, email address to: clerk@ wendovertrust.org or Clerk to the Trust, 51 Dobbins Lane, Wendover Bucks HP22 6DL. For details go to www.wendovertrust.org. Grants can be made for real need throughout the year.

Climate Action Wendover

Volunteers Needed! Our planet faces significant threats from the impact of climate change – these are a consequence of the actions of our forefathers and our generation. We need to change – quickly and significantly. Please consider what YOU can do. Building on our recent experience of learning about the levels of plastic waste we create – a group from St. Mary’s, Wendover has challenged itself to launch a community-wide initiative to champion effective action in our village that will make a real contribution to combatting climate change. We want this to be a broad and diverse group, far beyond the church and churchyard! We need volunteers who are prepared to bring passion, energy and enthusiasm to get things done – who are prepared to respond in a way that recognises this for the emergency that it is. Expertise and skills are welcome – but definitely not essential. We need to do some research, learn from others and get on with it! Learning ourselves and then teaching and encouraging our families, friends and neighbours. Ideas already being discussed include: • Tree planting • Car share scheme

Community Can you help? An appeal from If you can help in any way at all, or you know someone who may be interested in Wendover Junior Football Club WJFC are looking to complete a number of projects—is there anyone out there who has experience or works for a company who could help….? Alternatively, you may be interested in sponsoring the work being done…. these sort of projects make a big difference for the Club.

School Storage Compound The wooden fence is falling down and needs to be replaced. We’d like to install a metal mesh security fence and gate so that we have a secure compound and extra storage for Samba goals which then wouldn’t need taking down every week. Clubhouse – Heating & Storage We would like to replace the rather inefficient heating unit with something more modern such as wall storage heaters…. this would also free up space for bespoke storage to be installed, meaning we can also clear away the clutter and have more room.

sponsoring and helping with these works, please contact Robert Dalby, Chairman on robert.dalby2@ntlworld.com.

Everyone at Wendover Junior Football Club would like to wish our community a very Happy New Year!

Wendover CE Junior School

It is hard to believe that Christmas has come and gone! The autumn term has been another very busy one and it seems to have gone so very quickly. We started the term with our new school vision: We aim to be the school of choice at the heart of our community. Through living our Christian values, all children and adults at WCEJS have the opportunity to flourish as individuals. We nurture the curiosity to learn, the courage to lead and the compassion to care. Story continued page 31.

Entrepreneurship is alive and well in Buckinghamshire Schools

Head of Business and Finance Studies at The Princes Risborough School, Richard Dannell and Head of Business Studies at the John Colet School, Lee Adams, both introduced their competing teams and they were delighted that their students enjoyed a fantastic experience.

Pupils studying Business from year 9 at Princes Risborough School and Wendover’s John Colet School met up at Metro Bank’s Aylesbury branch on Wednesday, 4th December to present their ideas in a “Dragons' Den” style contest to four local business professionals.

Joining Michael Anthony Estate Agents’ Richard Dannell commented: Senior Partner, Michael Donnachie, as “All the students from both a Dragon were: Matthew Green, Store The Princes Risborough School and John Colet students with schools can be delighted Manager for Metro Bank in Aylesbury; the Dragons together after all the pitches were heard at Metro with their work and the Lacey Bonham, Community Fundraiser at Bank, Aylesbury. Everyone should After 2018’s inaugural event where John Colet pupils competed be encouraged.” against one another, this event again featured five teams from across Wendover’s John Colet School and The Princes Risborough School. Each team had a “blank sheet” of paper to incept a new product or service. It was a hotly contested evening which required the Dragons' business acumen to recognise the opportunities being presented. What was clear was every facet of the new idea had been considered by each of the teams: finance, pricing, marketing, logistics and return on investment.

The ideas presented featured: wearable jewellery, bicycle tyre inserts to prevent punctures, a new way of collecting charitable funds, community focused products using recycled materials and new hair brush. These ideas were incredibly novel, innovative and creative. In the eyes of everyone there, all the entries were winners. The bravery to stand up in front of the Dragons and deliver their presentation was hugely impressive. In return, each of the participating students would learn a huge amount relating to becoming a successful entrepreneur; experience that will help shape their future career potential, objectives and desires. After lengthy deliberation - which reflects on the outstanding job the students did in presenting - the “Dragons” selected “OneEarth” for their recycled product idea as 2019’s winner. The team from The Princes Risborough School demonstrating an innovative product that was a real head-turner.

Lee Adams from John Colet School remarked: “All the students can be proud of their achievements. Thanks to Heather and the team at Metro Bank for hosting and helping to organise, and to the 'Dragons' who got involved and helped the event be the success it was. John Colet School is looking forward to competing in 2020.” Local Director for Metro Bank (UK), Heather Wood, summed up the evening: “This was another superb event for local students gaining insight and expertise from professionals who have amassed many years’ experience. At Metro Bank, we are proud to offer community focused initiatives like this to engage and encourage customers, past, present and future to outline what’s possible. The planning for the 2020 event is already underway. We’d love to hear from Bucks based schools who’d like to participate.”

Welcome to 2020 - now there’s a frightening thought. Before we know it (and for those of you who remember the summer of ’69) it will soon be time to resurrect ‘In the year 2525’. If you can’t remember who sang it, the answer is upside down at the end of this article.

At 50plus we look forward to our 20th year of operation and some exciting plans to increase our range of services, particularly to those of more mature years. We began life as 50plus Handyman and many people still remember us as that. We expanded into plumbing and electrical works and now offer a broad range of services with specialist ‘independence’ services for the elderly, including new monitoring services. The 50plus name came from us; we were all 50 or older. Now and proudly some of ‘our people’ have reached 70 and are still active. It reflects one of the significant changes of our times; people working later in life, voluntarily. But (there’s always a but) as we live longer the number of us needing just that little bit more help is increasing and that’s where 50plus as provider of services for those over 50, our main market, comes into play. We are fortunate that we have the skills to harness another great change of our time, technology, and use it make independent living at home a lot easier for those of mature years. Check out our web site www.the50plus.co.uk (or Facebook page www.facebook.com/the50plus/) for more information. Enjoy the new decade. See advert left. Club Corner arrived on a Friday evening in late October at Green Park with the purpose of beautifying the new parkland alongside the canal at Whitehouses. The first task was to produce some model clay toppers for bamboo canes; this was enthusiastically done, with the resulting multi-coloured models of animals, boats, flowers and many other cartoon characters coming to life. The next morning the weather was not looking good, but nevertheless the planting of 2000 snowdrop bulbs started, surrounded by the garden canes. Meanwhile the bonfire was lit to consume the branches left from the recent adult work party.

enormous bonfire built which enabled marshmallows to be toasted. All six bird/ bug boxes were nailed to available trees to encourage more wildlife in future. In the afternoon the scrubland along the towpath was cut or sawed back to give more room for passing. Many walkers paused to thank us and enquire which group we were from. All this gives good publicity to the Wendover Trust and the IWA. As this proved to be a successful weekend, a further Family Camp will be included in our programme of events for 2020.

The festive season looms and we are looking forward to Christmas and New Years Eve parties. These will be too late for this month’s copy but with over forty members booked in already I am sure we will have pretty lively evenings.

The Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal provides a scenic and tranquil route from Bulbourne to Wendover – built as a feeder to provide much needed water to the Tring summit on the Grand Union. The canal was used for the carriage of coal, timber, straw and manure until 1904 when the canal ceased navigation due to leakage. It is currently being restored by the Wendover Arm Trust volunteers.

All that is left to say is we hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas and will have a good year in 2020. Don Knight

Fighting Plastic St. Mary’s Focus on our Environment that nature provides with a Our 10.30 congregation have recently spent a month of teaching and preaching focussed on the Environment. We thought about Creation, what “sustainability” means for us, the impact we are having on our world and ended with making personal pledges on what we can do to make a difference. We wanted to learn more about plastic waste; especially those hard-to-recycle plastic films, so asked our congregation to collect all their film for a month. Here is the mountain we accumulated and sorted at our Explore service It was shocking to find where our waste comes from: • 40% Vegetable and Fruit wrapping • 20% Crisp packets • 15% Bread and Biscuits • Rest Dried food / Meat / Pet food / Clingfilm / CONTAMINATION 40% of our plastic film was on items

AVDC blue wheelie bin or a specialised collection point. Please ensure items are clean and don’t mix materials that are not designated for that bin – otherwise the opportunity to sell for recycling goes down and in the worst case a whole load can be sent for incineration, completely defeating the effort that has been made to collect the materials.

“wrapping” in the first place! Please think about buying loose fruit & veg, whether from a market stall or supermarket. Refuse the packaging materials. Get some of the readily available net bags that can be used over and over again take them on your shopping trip. Very simple actions that together would really help reduce our community’s plastic waste. 20% of the heap was metallised crisp packet film. Although hard to recycle – it is not impossible. Many organisations are setting up collections under the Terracycle scheme – these give a small reward to charities. For example; in Wendover you can take clean crisp packets to the Florence Nightingale charity shop at 19 High St. Contamination – this really undermines efforts to recycle, whether in your

Wendover Dementia Action Alliance (WDAA) would like to thank the Next Stage Choir for their support at their concert on Thursday 12 December at Dobbies Garden Centre. A great time was had by all. The proceeds were split between WDAA and the Alzheimer’s Society. Singing is an activity which is of great benefit to those living with Alzheimer’s so this concert was wonderful to attend in many ways. WDAA will use the money to support tea dances. The first of these took place in St Mary’s last July and was so successful that more are planned for 2020. Unfortunately as the Christmas Tea Dance took place on Saturday 14 December which was after this edition of Wendover News went to press, no photos of that as yet. For Arnold Intake’s Community Engagement event they decided to each write a postcard to a care home, specifically targeting homes with ex-military residents. The idea came from social media, where a movement called ‘Postcards of Kindness’ really resonated with one of the Intake Flight Staff, Sgt Amy Ingham, who said: “My family have had connections to care homes for as long as I can remember. My Grandmother ran a care home while I was growing up and my Mother has previously worked in the caring profession. I am all too aware of the acute loneliness some of the residents feel when they have no living relatives remaining, or in some cases family live too far away for regular visits; so these postcards are a true delight to receive when ordinarily they would have nothing.” The movement currently has 20,000+ members, with the premise being that the general public send a postcard from their holiday or any other event, to a care home that has requested them. Arnold Intake were able to send 79 postcards, each to a different home, and just in time for Christmas. The recruits hope to make a difference to someone’s day by letting them know they are appreciated and not forgotten. There are currently 1200+ care homes across the UK that have requested postcards so this is a small start of something that Arnold Intake intend to continue. Each intake at Recruit Training Squadron, RAF Halton, takes on a Project where they will go out into the community and can be painting, weeding, planting trees or any other charitable help the community may need.

Community

Continued from page 8. Together with our vision we have three new strategic goals: children flourish; staff thrive; partnerships develop. We have already begun a number of exciting projects to ensure that we continue to strengthen our provision in each of these areas over the next three years. We have reviewed our curriculum too, ensuring that we offer the best provision we can – a broad curriculum enriched by many activities within and outside of school. Children have worked closely with students from the John Colet as part of biology week and with children at John Hampden (antibullying ambassadors and our Junior Road Safety Officers). It was lovely to see the Year 2 children at our first Nativity performance this week; Year 3 will be singing to residents of Cherry Tree House and at the Monday Club Café in Wendover before the end of term.

in school, they have competed against other schools in multi-sports, cross country and gymnastics recently. Our gardening club has also received an award from the Royal Horticultural Society and we have been working with St Mary’s Church to provide a Peace Garden in school. As well as all this, children have been busy raising funds for local and national charities.

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

A new year, a new Government and an opportunity to embrace new things and to look forward. One new thing is Wendover’s Neighbourhood Plan which will be put to the village in a referendum and no matter how tired your voting pencil is we hope that you’ll vote for this vital plan. It will, when it’s adopted, give Wendover real control over future development and it will protect our green spaces. The date for your diary is Thursday 30th January 2020. The Parish Council is looking forward to our Community Awards which, for the first time, will be decided by you. More voting I’m afraid but it’s good to recognise at least some of the people and organisations that work so hard to make our community flourish. So, Happy New Year to you all. Tom Walsh, Chairman, W Parish Council
