Mitigation Ellesborough Road and HS2 construction One of the major concerns for Wendover if HS2 goes ahead has been the disruption and costs that would result from possible closure of the Ellesborough Road. Wendover businesses depend on access to the village by this route for a significant number of their customers. Trade is drawn to Wendover from a wide area and easy access on this route is also important to the thousands of tourists who come through on The Ridgeway which passes along the High Street. The Wendover Society first raised this issue with HS2 Ltd in April 2011. The plan had been to close Ellesborough Road permanently and create a long and complicated diversion. Subsequent to the revised route announcement of January this year the Society has continued to press for this vital access to Wendover to be kept open.

Bulk Oil Buying Scheme STABLES TO LET NEAR WENDOVER - DIY
Update Further to the article in last month’s edition of Wendover News, several people enquired about whether this scheme included oil that was used for Agas. The answer is: yes, this requirement is easily accommodated in the scheme and you simply specify this on your details when you join. If you were interested in Community Impact Bucks Bulk Oil Scheme but weren’t sure whether the scheme gives you a good deal, the price agreed for the end of October was 57.95 p/l excluding VAT (which is currently 5% on heating fuel). Oil prices vary daily so this is only a useful comparison if you bought oil around that time.

Wendover Arm Wendover Arm Restoration: What Future for its Wildlife? In response to Oliver Statham’s article on the Wendover Arm of the canal, in fact the restoration would actually be very detrimental for Wendover’s wildlife. He says that people’s fears about the canal restoration adversely affecting the long term wildlife of the rest of the canal are unfounded, I strongly disagree. As a professional, freshwater ecologist of 20 years standing, who has often assessed the c onsequenc es of development on rivers and wetlands and as an advisor to government and planning authorities, I can assure readers that if the restoration works join the two wet sections of the canal, then the long term ecological health of the Wendover section is at grave risk and the canal as we know it will no longer exist. His comments on “habitation (sic) and wildlife” are incorrect, as any basic environmental assessment would reveal. No independent environmental assessment of the impact of the works would support his view and none has been undertaken. Rivers and canals are complex and rely on the way the water quality, water quantity, bed and banks interact with channel life. The result is that the
“restored” canal’s wildlife is likely to be very poor. The section with boats will have little wildlife and is likely to be algae dominated due to increased sediment and nutrients in the water. The upper section, even if it doesn’t have boats on it, is likely to be infested by signal crayfish which are already resident in the local catchment. These carry crayfish plague meaning that we will never have the prospect of native crayfish returning. They also remove the submerged water plants (which provide oxygen and the main habitat structure in canals). Fish, fish eggs and invertebrates, which form the main biodiversity within the canal, are also targets for this invasive crayfish. There is no known way to remove signal crayfish once they are in your canal without using a biocide called rotenone which would poison the whole canal. Further, there are resident fish species in the catchment which are officially classed as high impact invasive species, which will keep making the water nutrient rich and continue the loss of plants and animals. The canal will also be very vulnerable to mink; the main threat to water vole and all the water birds we find on the canal, including the little grebes. It was mink that wiped out our water vole population

a few years ago and joining the two parts of the canal again will prevent a stable water vole population being established without constant management. There are also many other significant issues which have not been assessed, including the works creating a possible failure of the W ater Framework Directive, failure to protect Habitats Directive Annex II species e.g. Bullhead and failure to comply with the Natural Environment and Rural Communities Act 2006. Although it fails to take into account many important ecological issues and is over 10 years old, it’s interesting that even British Waterways’ own “Environmental Matters” document which was written to support the restoration predicts significant ecological problems. In order for the people of Wendover, the Parish Council and sponsors to decide if they want to carry on supporting the restoration, I think we should at least ha ve an h on es t e n vir onm ent al assessment and debate about what the restoration will actually mean to our wildlife. What we’re moving towards is a wildlife poor canal which we will not be able to put right. Name & address supplied

WAT Walk an Arm’s Length raises over £13,000 for canal restoration The sponsored Walk an Arm’s Length on Sunday 2 September was a resounding success. 388 walkers took to the towpath from Wendover and walked the entire Arm finishing 6 ¾ miles later at Bulbourne junction. £13,000 was raised enabling volunteers to restore a further 32.5 metres of canal, as it costs an eye watering £400 per metre using volunteer labour! It is likely that Walk an Arm’s Length will become a regular event so look out for details in 2013. Thanks to all who took part and raised sponsorship funds. High water levels at Wendover A couple of Wendover residents contacted the Trust recently with concerns about the increased water level in the canal as a result of heavy and persistent rain which caused localised flooding of the towpath in places. Increased vegetation and erosion of the canal banks are partially to blame. The canal is owned and managed by the Canal & River Trust (C&RT), formerly British Waterways. The Trust work closely with local C&RT engineers and have campaigned for reed cutting along the Wendover Arm from Wendover basin to Drayton Beauchamp as the channel is choked with plant life which impedes water flow. Work undertaken by C&RT contractors in conjunction with ecologists is scheduled to start imminently. The maintenance will be sympathetic to fish and wildlife, whilst opening up a channel for the water to flow along the Arm to Bulbourne (the reason the canal was built in the first place). If you have any questions or concerns about the maintenance work, please contact the Canal & River Trust office on 0303 040 4040 or you can email enquiries.southeast@canalrivertrust.org.uk

start eating as soon as possible. In babies, give frequent sips of fluid and continue feeding even if they are vomiting. Water or special rehydration solutions (sachets to make these up can be purchased from pharmacies) should be used. The main danger is dehydration, especially in the young and elderly. Signs of this include thirst, reduced urine output, dry mouth, and cold hands and feet. If you are concerned that a young child or elderly person that you are caring for may be dehydrated contact us as soon as possible. Please DO NOT come to the surgery or go to A&E if you have acute vomiting and diarrhoea: norovirus is highly infectious. Call for advice if you have concerns. You should stay at home until 48 hours after you have recovered. Good general hygiene, especially hand washing, helps to reduce spread of the infection.

Corner Wendover Toddlers Wendover Toddlers thank everyone who attended our 40th birthday celebrations on 20 October. We were overwhelmed by the incredible support from the community. We would also like to thank the committee members who did all the organising and made it happen, and the ex-members who came to join us. Without them there wouldn’t have been anything to celebrate! Wendover Toddlers meets every term-time Monday from 1:30-3.00pm and provides a place for parents and children to socialise. There is tea, coffee and juice, and newspapers. We have a ride-on area, craft tables, a baby area and a book corner, and much more.
The Chilterns Sang.... Wendover and District Rotary would like to pass on their enormous thanks to everyone who made it to their big concert (Let the Chilterns Sing “Hooray for Heroes”) it was such a success. The Central Band of the Royal Air Force was superb. St Mary’s Church at the heart of our community was a brilliant venue but special thanks must go to all who attended and sang with such gusto. A truly happy and glorious evening. A lot of money was raised on the evening with Help for Heroes and the Chilterns MS Centre benefiting from ticket sale profits and St Mary’s being able to purchase extra seating as a result of the popularity of the wine and the tray bakes. Once again a very big thank you to one and all from the Rotary Club of Wendover and District.

You Write Macmillan Coffee Morning Well, yet again the weather was fine for most of the time and we had a fantastic morning’s fundraising. I was feeling cautiously optimistic that I might raise over £4,000 and beat last year’s record for my event...Well, I'm delighted to say that the total is an astonishing £4,426.70!! Yet again everyone has been so supportive, with about 60 people attending on the 28 Sept, and many more local businesses, retailers and restaurants giving fantastic raffle prizes, and donations. Thank you all so very much. Julie Needle

I vaguely saw a shadow about a metre from me, and my very bright front light showed it was a pedestrian so I slowed right down but he walked across the path right in front of me with a dog on a leash who stayed on the other side. My front wheel got caught in the leash and I stopped...The man fell down, very unsteady on his feet, got up and fell several times. By then I realised he had had too many pints. In the beam of my front light, I saw his face was covered in blood, from a probable previous fall? As he tried to steady himself on my bike I could smell his breath and got blood on my cape. I said I would call 999, but he protested. I still tried, but could not hear nor see because of my hood, the traffic and the dark. Just then, a good Samaritan stopped her car and offered help. Calling 999 she had the gentleman sit on the ground. She managed to stop the bleeding from the man's forehead with her scarf. The ambulance arrived and took over. I have had many near misses on this bit of road, but this was the worst. Are the authorities waiting for a serious accident? Amber (is it your name?) from Weston Turville, you did a great job. It was so good of you to stop! I picked your scarf up, gave it a good delicate wash and a long airing. It is as good as new. Please contact me through Wendover News; it would be nice to chat in brighter circumstances! Odile

Local Face: Michael Hunt Michael Hunt (new Curate at St Mary’s Wendover and St Michael’s Halton) was born in 1964 in Guildford, Surrey, the middle son of three children, and brought up in Godalming, where his parents still live. Following school he went to Southampton University to study economics, and three years later, after graduating and getting engaged, he started as a trainee accountant with Hampshire County Council. His fiancée completed a year as a youth worker at a Baptist Church in Brentwood before they married and bought their first house in Winchester in 1986.
Michael’s wife suffered a major heart attack and died.
job he continues today, although the organisation is now called Community Impact Bucks.
Life immediately afterwards was focused on the c hildr en and Michael’s own grieving. He returned to work briefly, but was eventually made redundant in 2004 following a merger and at this point he made the decision not to return to full time work, but started a distance learning Theology degree, and was appointed as a nonexecutive director of the local Primary Care Trust.
Around this time Michael met Margaret, also a widow, who had two girls. Their relationship slowly evolved and they decided to join their families together and married in 2007, starting a new family in a new home in Princes Risborough.
During this time Michael was accepted as an ordinand in the Church of England and started his part time theological training. Three long years of mixing family, employment and study finished in June this year when he was ordained as a Deacon. Michael says Life began to settle down, and Michael “I’m delighted to be the curate in the started to explore a return to work, benefice of Wendover and Halton. although with a nagging sense about Christian ministry, following his Whilst not everything is new as we have experience in a variety of churches over been worshipping at St Mary’s for the the years: Methodist, Baptist, and last 4 to 5 years, it is exciting to start a Anglican. In due course he started a Michael’s, as well as the wider village their son and fourth child was born new job at Bucks Community Action – a life of Wendover and Halton.” Michael’s training as an accountant led to him starting work for major accountancy firm KPMG in 1990. Their first two daughters were born in 1992 and 1994, before another job and house move – this time to live in Aylesbury where daughter number three was born in 1996. They continued to live there despite a new role at Warwick District Council. Fortunately an opportunity arose to become the Finance Director of a charity based in Amersham, a role Michael started in 2002 and he looked forward to 2003 as a year in which life might feel more balanced.

Wendover's Ash Trees
Firstly may I wish everybody, a very Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year. I’m one of those people, I’m afraid, who gets a bit twitchy around New Year; Christmas and the time of joy and celebration has passed, it is still a few months until Spring and the weather is usually cold, miserable and dark. However, I’m hopeful that 2013 will be different, full of sunshine for us all. My hope is that everyone, the Parish Council and residents, will be working together to achieve a successful year.
You may have heard that the British Ash tree is under threat from a serious fungal disease called Chalara fraxinea. The Parish Council cares for 32 Ash trees and so far there isn't any sign of infection. Our groundsman Andy, who is always about the village, has instigated a regime to ensure that we are informed and ready to act at the first Ellesborough Silver Band signs of a problem. Seasonal entertainment will be provided We welcome the public’s help in on Saturday 15 December at the Local keeping an eye out for signs of the Produce Market by the Ellesborough disease in the wider Wendover area. Silver Band who will also provide the Information on what to look for when musical accompaniment to Carols you’re out and about will be posted at around the Christmas Tree on Friday 21 December at 6.15pm. Please do the Clock Tower. take time to join this festive gathering. If you see anything please notify the Forestry Commission helpline: 08459 33 New Year’s Eve 55 77 (8am - 6pm Monday - Friday) The New Year’s Eve impromptu plant.health@forestry.gsi.gov.uk More fireworks are enjoyed by more and more information is available at their website people each year. Unfortunately last www.forestry.gov.uk/chalara year there was a problem with the rubbish left behind. The main concern is glass as there was a large amount of Local Produce Market broken drinking glasses and bottles and Manor Waste 9am to 1pm with New Year’s Day being a bank Saturday 15 December holiday there is no one to clear it away.
It’s been an eventful year for the Parish Council and I look back and think how proud we should all feel for the way that Wendover responded to the different challenges. Some were very obvious, such as the Jubilee celebration, the Olympics and Paralympics, Wendover Celebrates and so on. Others were not, but to some are as much to shout out about as the high profile ones just mentioned. Thank you to everyone who made 2012 a very pleasant and enjoyable year and thank you to those who gave me so much support and made the year personally memorable – you know who you are! Robert Duggan, Chairman
Jubilee Oak Tree We have taken delivery of the Jubilee Oak which has been planted in a prominent position in Ham pden Meadow. A plaque will be added shortly to commemorate this special occasion.
Christmas Starts Here Wed 5 Dec 5:00pm Manor Waste This year the Christmas Lights Switch On will be part of a village music festival with contributions from local schools and organisations. Santa will arrive at 6:30pm. Festive Foods will be available from stalls on the Manor Waste as well
This is a request for everyone who attends the fireworks to be vigilant about this hazard and place any rubbish in the bins provided or take it home. The Parish Clerk is going to contact all the local pubs, restaurants, etc., with a request that they use plastic glasses on that evening.
