Can you and a group of friends get together as a team to help fundraise for Marie Curie Cancer Care? Marie Curie Cancer Care provides high-quality nursing, totally free, to give people with terminal cancer and other terminal illnesses the choice of dying at home surrounded by their families. Our vision is to have a Fundraising Group in every town across Buckinghamshire, enabling us to raise more money, which will support the increase of nursing services for the county. As a charity we rely on volunteer Fundraising Groups to raise vital funds and awareness of charity’s work and we are looking to form a group in the Aylesbury area. By meeting as a group on a regular basis you would be supporting fundraising in your area. Not only would you be helping to raise funds to benefit the charity but there is lots of fun to be had along the way. If you are interested in finding out more or would like an informal chat about fundraising, please call Hazel Bendon the Buckinghamshire Community Fundraiser on 01604 258758 or email; hazel.bendon@mariecurie.org.uk.

Health & Fitness What Is Osteoporosis? Osteoporosis occurs when the struts that make up the mesh-like structure within bones become thin, and causes bones to become fragile and break easily. Breaks like this are referred to as “fragility fractures” and can follow a minor bump or fall. The wrists, hips and spine are most commonly affected. Spinal fractures can also cause loss of height and curvature of the spine. In the UK, 1 in 2 women and 1 in 5 men over 50 will break a bone, mainly because of poor bone health. It is estimated that 3 million people in the UK have osteoporosis and there are roughly 300,000 fragility fractures a year (National Osteoporosis Association 2013). Bone loss occurs naturally as we get older but broken bones, because of osteoporosis, is not inevitable and there is much that can be done to prevent this. You can reduce your risk by eating a calcium-rich balanced diet and taking plenty of exercise. Summer sunlight helps generate vitamin D that our bones need. Exercise is important for everyone at all stages of their lives but is especially important for people with osteoporosis and at risk of fracture. Finding the right kind of exercise for you will help you to gain confidence and help to reduce your risk. Buff Bones® Pilates for Osteoporosis is a new class aimed specifically for the adult with diagnosed osteoporosis. It is a structured programme based on scientific findings of bone health, providing safe bone strengthening and balance improving exercises within the framework of a Pilates mat setting. It is adaptable to all fitness levels. For more information contact Katrina Rance - 07773454287, EMAIL: katrinarance@live.co.uk or see advert below.

Health
Want to run? Here’s how to get started
Why do people start running? Well the idea of doing something that is a) free b) starts the minute you leave the front door and c) keeps you lean and happier - must be brilliant! The health benefits are too numerous to mention, but here’s some highlights…Lower blood pressure, stronger immune system, increased libido (yes really!), greater bone density which reduces risk of osteoporosis, and reduced stress and anxiety. Let’s not forget the 600-800 calories burned in an hour of running, the endorphin trigger giving you that “runner’s high” (better than chocolate!) and all the benefits that exercising in the outdoors can give you. OK, so how to start? Firstly, “learn to walk before you run”. Yes really, walking is the best way to get going. Start with flat routes, and do walk-run intervals. Start with one-minute run, one-minute walk for 20-30 minutes, then build up the running time gradually, and start to reduce the walks. Make sure you have enough breath to talk/sing to ensure you are running at the right intensity. If you can’t talk, you are running too hard and will quickly burn out or worse, get injured. Be prepared for a few aches and pains after you first run, give yourself time to recover and then do it again. Keep building the intensity by adding more distance, some hills and running faster and more frequently over time. Combine your running with some strength and core exercises to help prevent injury and improve endurance. When you embark on your new training programme, keeping motivated can be tricky, especially on those cold, dark nights, after a hard day. Find a scenic route, run with a friend or in a group, have a goal, whether that be entering an event or weight loss. Most importantly, have a plan, diarise your running programme and stick to it. So what are you waiting for? - Jackie Robinson - JPR Fitness, see ad

Hopefully, by the time you read this, two of the boilers will have been repaired. Many thanks to all who have supported the WSA by using the pool or and to those who have become members or rejoined the WSA. Thank you especially to those who have come forward to volunteer to help with the work to save the pool. Please let us know at membership@wendoverswimmingassociation.co.uk if you would like to help.

Judicial Review Appeal
HS2
In July, HS2AA learnt the result of its judicial review appeal supported by Wendover. The www.unionplumbingandheating.co.uk result was mixed. One judge, with the most environmental expertise, agreed with the entire Accompany your wedding/drinks case against. The other two agreed that the reception, lunch, dinner or club night environmental strategic route assessments were with David, who plays missing but concluded that Parliament decided saxophone & clarinet the route. HS2AA won leave to appeal to the with full band, high Supreme Court, so more funding will be needed quality backing tracks to fight on and there remains a good probability - jazz standards, Latin, of success. It is highly encouraging that a very film/show tunes & pop. senior judge has found against the government on all counts. Adult & child saxophone/clarinet tuition available. Beginners welcome. meters from the current “green” tunnel entrance; Wendover only about 200 meters. To protect Wendover, we’d like it to be further away. The National Trust seems to prefer to damage Wendover and the Coombe Hill environment to “protect” Stoke Mandeville. If you are a member, please write and ask for a rethink and for the issue to be debated at the AGM. Please also sympathise with Stoke Mandeville, they are faced with prolonged construction disruption and huge noise from massive viaducts. But a tunnel portal over 2 kilometres away should be the least of their concerns!
The National Trust
Compensation Class Action
A more local issue is, oddly, the National Trust. Its response to the draft environmental statement objected to Wendover’s request to move the location of the portal of our proposed bored tunnel away from the village and slightly closer to Stoke Mandeville. Stoke Mandeville is 2,900
Finally, a national compensation claim is being organised, aimed at those close enough to be affected but too far for formal compensation: most people. The organisers are researching a possible massive legal challenge should there be enough support. It is free to support the idea; this only works with lots of support http:// www.cahs2.com/.

WT Reservoir

www.wendovernews.co.uk
The Canal & River Trust are looking to do some modest rearrangements, to allow public access to the shoreline of Weston Turville Reservoir, just beyond the end of the concrete path by the Weston Turville entrance. This follows discussions between various user groups at the reservoir and local residents, who had been saddened that fences had closed off shoreline access. Residents are thrilled at this news, which will allow youngsters to be able, once more, to "fish" with their little nets and safely look at tadpoles and the like in shallow, shoreline water, rather than at the end of a deep jetty. See also Wendover News page 12 July 2013 and page 15 August 2013. The fishing club is, in principle, comfortable with access being opened up because it is an area they do not use, due to the overhead power cables in that corner. As this is such a popular site for visitors to dwell, the Trust would want to work with locals to clear the vegetation, allow shoreline access and see if a couple of benches or picnic tables can be located there. Volunteers are needed to help the Canal and Rivers Trust and Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust to make this shoreline access possible. Please contact Wendover News if you can help: editor@wendovernews.co.uk or 01296 624270. Your details will be passed on to the organisers of the clearance work. Thank you very much in advance.

The Great Train Robbery Musings on the Great Train Robbery 1963 by Doug Manderfield sometime Constable 504 and Sergeant, Bucks Constabulary and Thames Valley Police 1955 – 1985.(photo on web) Buckinghamshire Constabulary, with its headquarters in Aylesbury, comprised of five Divisions, Aylesbury, Bletchley, Chesham, High Wycombe and Slough prior to 1 April 1968. Aylesbury Division had sub-divisions at Aylesbury, Linslade, Waddesdon and Wendover.

Officers from the whole of Buckinghamshire were drawn into the search for clues and evidence along the railway track and embankments. I was stationed at Wendover and was required to be involved in this search. After a relatively short period a number of offenders were arrested and their hideout at Leatherslade Farm (near Brill) was discovered. Again I was involved in guarding this site. Constables were engaged over a 24 hour period until all forensic evidence had been gathered.
Linslade Sub-division was made up of offices at Linslade, Ivinghoe, Stewkley, and Wing. Linslade and Ivinghoe areas shared the length of the main east coast line from Glasgow to London Euston. At this time communications to Constables on cycles and their station was by conference points made at public telephone kiosks, private house and in some cases public houses. (Conference points were usually on the hour the constable waiting at the pre-arranged place for five minutes prior and five minutes after). There were no mobile phones or sat nav.
The offenders were locked up in Bedford Prison and for initial court hearings were brought to the magistrates court attached to Linslade Police Station. These took place over a weekly period. Later these hearings were transferred to the district council offices in Walton Street Aylesbury. It was at these hearings at various times I was handcuffed to Wilson, Biggs, Boal and others. They were later dealt with at Aylesbury Assizes and given long prison sentences
On 8 August 1963 the tranquillity of the Linslade/Ivinghoe area was thrown into chaos when the high value travelling post office from Glasgow to London was waylaid at Sears Crossing. It has been said that it would have been the problem for Bedfordshire Police if it had happened some distance back.
Bruce Reynolds, thought to have been the brains behind this operation was not arrested until the 1970s I was then Station Sergeant at Aylesbury Police Station and he was held in the cells there, by which time we were under the auspices of Thames Valley Police. The rest is well documented.

Local Face: Kieran Dunk Kieran Dunk has lived in Wendover all his life. He attended both primary schools before studying at the John Colet until the age of 16 when he left to pursue a career in the British Army. Kieran joined the Army in 2003, choosing to serve with The Grenadier Guards. Kieran’s career started at The Infantry Battle School Catterick. The initial training took 6 months to complete, at the end of which he was awarded Best Recruit. After a period on ceremonial duties in London, Kieran was deployed to BosniaHerzegovina for a 6 month peacekeeping tour. In 2006 Kieran deployed to Iraq for 4 months. His platoon was sent to Al Amarah which was the most heavily mortared base in Iraq. His platoon conducted night patrols to counter the insurgent mortar teams. In recognition of the platoon’s actions their commander was awarded the Military Cross. The battalion then returned to the UK and immediately began 6 months of training for a 6 month tour of Afghanistan in 2007, this being the fastest redeployment of fighting troops in modern times. Out of
150 soldiers from across the brigade Kieran was selected as one of the final 40 to serve in The Brigade Reconnaissance Force (BRF). BRFs act as the brigade commander’s eyes and ears, operating as a small independent unit far ahead of the main force.
support to Grenadiers who have been seriously injured in Afghanistan, and to the families of those who have been killed.
Kieran has since carried out a further two tours in Helmand in 2009 and 2012. In between tours, Kieran has completed two 4 month promotional courses in the Brecon Beacons and was recently promoted to Sergeant. Over the three tours in Helmand Province the Grenadiers lost 15 members killed in action, including James Ashworth who was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. In addition, the Regiment sustained a large number of battle casualties, with many suffering life changing injuries. There remains the unquantifiable number of young men who will have suffered mentally and who will need support in the future. The Colonel's Fund has been raising money since 2007 in order to provide

Clock Tower Report
The last few weeks have been relatively quiet, although hot, while we await a response from the Heritage Lottery Fund regarding our grant application for the restoration of the Clock Tower. The Website and Clock Tower window now have a progress thermometer showing how fundraising is going. If our bid is successful we should be in a position to proceed before the end of the year. If we are unsuccessful this will delay the project and we will need to rely more on donations. The WI has a quiz to raise funds on 7 Sept, and this, plus fundraising by No2 Pound Street, should mean the thermometer will be going up as quickly as the summer temperatures!
It was realised that the Clock Tower might need an inspection to check its overall condition in 2011. Arrangements were made in February 2012 for a survey to be carried out via a cherry picker.
There are plans afoot for raising funds to provide PADs (Public Access Defibrillators) in key locations in Wendover. I have been in discussion with possible fund providers and the Local Ambulance Service and we are optimistic that if the Council agrees, a rolling plan to provide two defibs a year can be put in place very soon. Whilst on the subject of your local ambulance service, please note there is an open meeting at St Anne’s Hall on 3 Sept at 7pm: one of the subjects could include defibrillators in public places. Wendover is an ideal location as we have good local access to professional Community First Responders who are based at RAF Halton. Robert Duggan, Chairman
Next Parish Council Meeting Monday 2 September, 7.30pm Wendover Library Room
This revealed the timber framed clock tower structure was extensively weathered and partly decayed. Although not structurally dangerous it needed attention as some of the timbers were considered to be sufficiently decayed to be beyond economic repair. This led to the conclusion that the Bell Tower would need to be replaced with a new structure. The Parish Council felt that planning for such works should be instigated straight away so that the necessary funds could be raised over a comfortable period and arranged, via their appointed surveyor, for a Schedule of Works to be drawn up and submitted to building contractors for pricing. On the basis of the costs submitted, it was decided that the funds to carry out the restoration works would be raised from various sources and by various means. We are now awaiting the decision of the Heritage Lottery Fund and hopefully will be in a position to place instructions for the works to be started soon. We do not yet have an agreed start date but consideration will need to be given to starting the works imminently in 2013 to avoid adverse weather conditions over the winter or indeed, to delay starting until Spring 2014. Charles Mallard, Project Manager

Angling at Hampden Pond The priority for the Council is for the Pond to be managed as a haven for biodiversity and to be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. Fishing is an ‘added benefit’ from the management of the Pond. Its condition is regularly inspected and there is no sign of it drying up as it has done in the past leading to the temporary removal of the fish. With day tickets at just £4 for adults, it is a very affordable place to fish. Annual permits are £48 with big discounts for seniors and juniors. There is also a specially built fishing platform accessible by wheelchair users. We have recently cleared some weed from the front of the platform in response to a request from anglers. There are other places around the Pond for anglers who like a little more of a challenge compared to many of the local purpose built fishing lakes. If you are a Hampden Pond angler and have photos of recent catches please send them to us and we will publish a selection on the website.
