Mimi’s mission Many are familiar with Mimi’s Mission. Wendover girl Amelia [Mimi] Jane Simpson has Cerebral Palsy. Mimi is back from America after a lifeenhancing operation costing some £34,000 raised by family, friends and Wendover people. Mimi now needs a further two years
of intensive physiotherapy costing £20,000. The Rotary Club got the ball rolling at their Annual ‘Big Quiz’ on 9 March by holding one fun game for Mimi, and the Club was able to pass £220 to the family. Every little helps so for details of Mimi’s Mission and how to help see www.mimismission.co.uk.
Stroke Aware If it is bad news to be told you have high blood pressure, it is worse news to find a loved one collapsed on the floor with a drooping face, slurred speech and one side of the body out of control. Worse still to find it might have been preventable. Stroke can happen to anyone at any age but you can reduce the risk by controlling your blood pressure. 60 people attended Rotary Club of Wendover and District’s drop in clinic at the Library Room on 21 April. Blood pressure was taken by qualified doctors and nurses; we gave them information on stroke prevention and topped it off with refreshments. Good that most people’s BP was normal, better that we could advise seven that they should visit their GP for further follow up and best, that this may possibly have prevented a stroke. Rotary Club will run this event next year – come along – what’s the worst that could happen?

In advance of the main meeting, the Parish Council’s Planning Committee considered proposals for the restoration of the derelict Brook House and the erection of one detached dwelling. Several interested members of the public expressed the view that the current proposals offered a better restoration option than those previously submitted and certainly compared with the present ‘terrible situation.’ Concerns were expressed relating to size, potential loss of light and overlooking neighbours, the need for a planting scheme and conserving trees subject to preservation orders. The Committee endorsed those views and will submit a response to AVDC planning. Richard Gridley

28 April to 1 May 2012 Thank you to Councillor Duggan for welcoming the 30 adults and 3 children to a short reception at the Youth Centre. We all met up later at St Anne’s Hall for a very lively evening of fish and chips, music by Bill and Barbara McGillivray and a picture quiz.
Can you Walk an Arm’s Length from Wendover - Tring on Sunday 2 September? The Wendover Arm Trust invites you to bring your friends and family to our 6¾ mile sponsored walk along the Wendover Arm, from Wharf Road, Wendover to the Grand Junction Arms, Bulbourne, near Tring.
Our outing to Denbies Wine Estate in Surrey was a resounding success and our visitors were very impressed by the whole experience, especially the land-train tour around the vineyard and of course the wine tasting. It was good to show the French that we too can produce excellent wines.

Charity Bags I am not sure about other streets in Wendover, but mine keeps getting charity bags through the letterbox for clothes collections. The logos on the bags make each look like it belongs to well know UK Cancer Charity but these are actually for charities which are registered elsewhere. These organisations give a fixed amount to a charity per month and as they are registered abroad, do not share their accounts and how much profits they make. As you may be aware, in the press recently, there have been reports on these foreign companies having tonnes of material which is worth a lot of

I have reported this to advertising standards online (as the logos are misleading). Does anyone have any ideas how we can make sure these donations go to fully regulated UK charities? Greener Street Lighting
Nature Note
After a lengthy absence off sick our Clerk Fiona Lippmann has now resigned. Short of a few loose ends to be sorted out we will be embarking on advertising for a new Clerk.
Your parish council is putting together a programme that should see a noticeable and positive change to Wendover's streetlights. The sodium lamps we currently use to light our streets are both energy hungry and high maintenance. The proposal is to develop a rolling program, over four to five years, that will see all of the village’s lamps converted to LED.
It is not a commonly known fact that all nesting birds are protected by law between the months of March and September. It is illegal to interfere in any way, e.g. hedging, tree felling/ lopping and high scaffolding on buildings are all included.
At the recent Annual Parish meeting the Chairman was unanimously re-elected and the vice Chair is now Nicky Gregory who was also unanimously elected. The four committees, Finance and General, Amenities, Planning and Staffing will all elect chairs when they meet for the first time in the next few weeks. Hopefully the business in year two of your Parish Council will be somewhat smoother to deal with than in year one.
The benefits of LED lighting include greatly reduced energy usage, reduced maintenance cost, greater lamp longevity and a large reduction in light pollution. Wendover will once again be able to stargaze safe in the knowledge that this green project will save us all a Good luck to Wendover Celebrates – few quid. taking place on June 4 2012; The Parish Council has been involved in one Samples of the lights we will use are way or another, my congratulations and installed on a column on the footpath good luck to councillors and staff who alongside the Library and the column have been involved at different times. behind the library in the Witchell.
