Divine Wines Chelan’s vivacious wine scene grows denser on south shore

Nearly 30 wineries can now be found around Lake Chelan or within a few miles of its shores. The highest concentration is at the lake’s south entrance from Wenatchee on Highway 97A, their tasting rooms waiting to welcome vacationing visitors with sips of and stories about their locally produced wines. Eight wineries are situated on the north-facing hills that owners say — not unlike owners on the other side of the lake — grow the best grapes and offer the best views in the region.

The lake has always been a magnet for lovers of sun, water recreation and fabulous views of the North Cascade peaks. For more than a century, it’s been the apple industry at the local economy’s core, keeping Chelan and Manson alive through frigid winter months. When the apple market crashed in the mid-1990s, many growers were forced to pull their fruit trees out rather than pay the costs of spraying, picking and packing crops that put them further in debt.

Some started planting grapes, a crop that not only takes advantage of the area’s unique agricultural conditions but also yields value-added products — wine — that could be sold on site for healthy profits. Wineries, operators gambled, not only take advantage of tourists who already

INSIDE STORY come to the lake for recreation, they bring in other year-around wine tourists that boost the local economy.

“We knew early on the land would grow good grapes,” said Guy Evans, who operates Tunnel Hill Winery, overlooking the lake from the south on Highway 97A. His father, Denny Evans, had planted a couple acres of Pinot Noir in a desperate hope of finding sustainable use of the land.

“It gets the first sunlight of the day, but it’s in shade before it gets too hot,” said Dean Neff, who with his wife Heather, bought seven acres of former orchard from Denny Evans and started planting Syrah, Malbec and Viognier grapes for their Nefarious Cellars in 2004.

Similar vineyard activity also started as early as the late 1990s near Manson, on Lake Chelan’s north shore.

Steve Kludt, Bob Christopher and Paul Benson had planted grapes on the lake’s sunny side.

This Week at the Ruby Theatre: Inside Out

The creators of animated classics like Toy Story and Finding Nemo have created another youthful flick with a universal quality. By focusing on the emotions inside Riley’s head as she adjusts to new life in San Francisco, Pixar’s Inside Out illustrates how much emotions dictate children’s’ and adults’ outlook on life. Comedians like Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Bill Hader and Mindy Kaling voice different emotions

summer highlights The 2015 summer and fall seasons are quickly filling with events unique to the area and boasting local flavor.

Many of the Lake Chelan and Manson area wineries and breweries will be pouring wine and beer at the fifth annual Wenatchee Wine & Food Festival, held Saturday, Aug. 22 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Town Toyota Center.

Enjoy over 100 wines from more than 30 wineries, plus craft beers, distilled spirits and amazing food. It’s a great night, and tickets are only $45 each, available online at wenatcheewineandfood.com.

The sixth Annual Mahogany & Merlot Vintage Boat Show is an ‘on-the-water’ boat show and free family-friendly event held Oct. 2-4. Classic cars will be showcased on the shore along with Vintage Unlimited Hydroplanes from the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum in Seattle, Vintage Inboard ‘Limited Class’ Hydroplanes, and Antique & Classic Mahogany Runabouts from the Golden Era of pleasure boating.

Hydro exhibition races will begin early Saturday morning, plus there’s a classic boat parts swap meet, wine barrel furniture, delicious food booths or enjoy the action from the beer and wine garden.

Back for a second year, the Manson Summer Nights Concert Series returns with an amazing lineup of artists performing their own new and original music from a variety of genres. Held every Sunday evening through Sept. 6, gates open at 6 p.m. It’s outdoor festival seating—bring your lawn chair or blanket to Leffler Field, the open field between Wells Fargo Bank and Mountain View Lodge as you come into Manson, just before Wapato Point Parkway.

Parking is free. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Concerts are held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

A short guide to hiking, biking and walking around Lake Chelan

Echo Ridge Summer Trails (Length: 25 miles) The Echo Ridge Trail System contains almost 25 miles of trails intertwined with roads. Originally designed for Nordic skiing and snowshoeing in the wintertime, the trails are popular for hiking and mountain biking spring through fall. There are wide, easy trails suitable for all ages and highly technical single-track trails for the more adventurous. You will travel over open ridge tops through a young, emerging forest recovering from a 1968 wildfire. Expect to see great views of Lake Chelan, the Stewart Range, Okanogan Highlands and Columbia Plateau. Trail difficulty varies from “easy” trails to “most difficult,” but most trails are suitable for children.

Directions: From Chelan travel west on Highway 150 (Manson Highway) toward Manson for 1.5 miles. Turn right on Boyd Road and follow signs to the Echo Ridge Nordic Ski Area, nine miles from Chelan.

Pot Peak (Length: 9.5 miles) A real workout! It’s only four miles to the top of Pot Peak from Snowberry Bowl campground, but it’s steep enough to make you feel it. Take plenty of water and a hiking stick.

Directions: Approximately a 30 minute drive from Chelan. From Chelan take Highway 97A south four miles to South Shore road. Continue west on South Shore to 25-Mile Creek area. Take Shady Pass Road (FS #5900) to Slide Ridge Road (FS #8410). Park at Pot Peak Trailhead.

Walks: Hikers venture along Echo Ridge. *Trail closures may occur due to wildfires.

Chelan River (Reach 1) Trail (Length: 3 Miles) This is a three-mile-plus round trip walk overlooking Chelan Dam and the Chelan River. It takes visitors from the Riverwalk Loop Trail in downtown Chelan to Reach 1 of the Chelan River – the uppermost section of the four mile river that flows down to join the Columbia River and Chelan Falls. This trail was built by Chelan County PUD to enhance community recreation as part of its federal license to operate the Lake Chelan Hydro Project. The first section of the trail begins in Chelan, at the boat launch on the south side of the Chelan River. This half-mile section is paved and accessible to all. Along this part of the trail, visitors will learn about the Chelan Dam. The lower section of the trail, 1.1 miles long, is gravel and winds through the natural riverbanks.

Directions: Begins at Riverwalk Park Boat Launch, 506 S. Emerson St, Chelan Beebe Springs Wildlife Area (Length: 4.4 Miles) Beebe Springs Wildlife Area covers 207 acres with one mile of Columbia River shoreline riparian, wetland, upland shrub steppe and cliff/talus habitats. Beebe Springs Creek meanders through the eastern portion of the property. Extensive habitat restoration began on the area in 2005 and will continue for several more years.

Directions: From Chelan, three miles east on Highway 150 to junction with Highway 97. North on Highway 97 0.3 mile to parking area.

Bike Routes:

Lake Chelan is an undiscovered “Fat Tire” paradise. Singletrack is the stuff most skilled mountain bikers crave. There is something about whipping down a hard packed narrow trail through the woods in complete control.

There are a number of trails in the Lake Chelan Basin which rank as epic rides.

Pot Peak is just one of them. Ten miles…all single track…all downhill…5,000 feet in elevation drop. The challenge is the climb to 6,500 feet elevation before you get to enjoy this epic trail on the south shore of Lake Chelan.

Boutique of the Week~ Black Dog Frame Shop

You don’t have to be a dog lover to love shopping at Black Dog Frame Shop, but if you consider canines your muse, this is your place.

Though the shop sells a bit of everything, from cards to clothes to candles, it is the dog inspired decorations, vintage prints and frame shop that make it a must-see during your vacation.

“We sell a lot of Chelan art prints since that is the sort of souvenir tourists want to leave with,” owner Adam Nelson said.

Nelson, who has owned the place for seven years, makes most of the prints in house.

They portray iconic Lake Chelan images, like the Lady of the Lake, Seaplanes and advertisements for apples one would see on antique apple crates.

“I always try to devote space to Chelan,” Nelson said.

Store Hours:

The vintage images also transfer to baseball caps and T-shirts and feature more than just Chelan. If you are a future Husky or Cougar, buy decorations to outfit your dorm room in school spirit with vintage flair.

Of if you are a magazine fanatic, flip through their stack of vintage issues to find that coveted cover.

Don’t forget the dogs. Named after the companion Nelson brought to work, the shop carries a load of dog-themed merchandise in more than one breed.

Pillows, cards, mugs, figurines and pictures — you name it, Fido is on it.

Behind the dog display, tucked in a corner is the business piece that started it all.

“We started out as a small frame shop,” Nelson said. “I like how I can see an art piece in another state, buy it and then in six months have a customer be excited to take it home.”
