You must know by now that getting on the lake is a top priority when the weather is boiling and a lake such as Chelan awaits you. It’s really pretty simple to hop on the water, whether that be by air, paddle board, boat or something else.

After all, Lake Chelan was named among the top 20 lakes in America by USA Today’s travel experts, and was voted 14th by readers all over the world. What are you waiting for?

Get on the lake!

According to USA Today, Lake Chelan is known for its unusual shape and length. It’s a long, narrow lake, just over 50 miles long.

DRYEST In the air via an airplane, helicopter, parasailing or skydiving: This option, of course, doesn’t get your feet nearly as wet, but it still takes a lot of guts. Just make sure your gut isn’t too full before takeoff if you get motion sickness. If being on the water isn’t your thing, being above the water is the next best option. Take in the views of the Lake Chelan Valley, travel to Stehekin or go for a thrill ride on a parasail just to say you did.

Your friends will be quite impressed, too! Here are places to take on Lake Chelan by air: • •

At Lake Chelan Helicopters, skydiving is also an option, and generally, the skydiver lands at the airport near Chelan.

Prices for the helicopter rides range from $275 up to $545. LCH offers wine tours, an hour tour to Stehekin or Leavenworth, 30 minute tours in the Chelan and Manson areas or hourly rentals for business meetings, family reunions or birthday-type events.

“It’s different than any other way you can see it, and you can cover so much of the valley in such little time,” said Dale England, owner of Lake Chelan Helicopters.

“It’s a very unique experience. Plus, you get to fly.”

All ages are allowed, England said. He has flown people ranging from three months to 98 years-old.

Bill Pickett of Jet Skis Ahoy said usually by Wednesday, the weekend is 75 percent booked for boat and jet ski rentals. By Saturday morning, only one or two boats of the company’s 22 are available to rent.

Why get on the lake by boat, though? “A lot of people just enjoy the scenery up there and the parks … that are only accessible by boat,” Pickett said.

Fishing: Every year, stocking programs release 100,000 cutthroat and 500,000 Kokanee salmon fingerlings into Lake Chelan, according to the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce. Buy a fishing license at Kelly’s Ace Hardware, 128 E. Woodin Ave., or at the Chelan Walmart, 108 N. Apple Blossom Drive. Here are a few more fishing locations near Lake Chelan: • • • • •

USUALLY WET On a boat, but not really: Once you’re out on the water and warmed up, hop on a tube, wakeboard or water skis or go surfing. These options will ensure full-engulfment in the crystal clear waters of Lake Chelan and a nice way to cool off. While it’s true that you should wear a lifejacket to stay safe, it’s important that the boat reaches high speeds for maximum enjoyment and additional adventure tales to tell. Don’t forget about kayaking or paddleboarding on the lake. According to the Chamber, the water is calmest in the morning or late afternoon. Get on the water with these options: •

Most boat rental places offer a tube, waterskis or a wakeboard with the rental of a boat. Check with them ahead of time, or ask them to add one of these things to the package.

VERY WET There’s no doubt that you’ll end up extremely wet after jet skiing, especially in windy conditions on the lake. For a jet ski, prices reach up to $200 at Jet Skis Ahoy, depending on the day and length of rental. This is a great way to see the lake from a different perspective and catch some waves. summer highlights The 2015 summer and fall seasons are quickly filling with events unique to the area and boasting local flavor.

The end of July brings the Lake Chelan Rodeo to town, this year on July 31 and Aug. 1. See all the cowboys and cowgirls, hear the golden voice of rodeo announcer Cody Hodge and be thrilled at the amazing feats of the McMillan Family Trick Riders that keep you on the edge of your seat with rodeo action. It’s the greatest show on dirt. See updates about this event at www.facebook.com/pages/ Lake-Chelan-Rodeo/190570474400112 In August it’s the three-day Lake Chelan Fine Arts Festival.

Now in its sixth year, this event takes place in Riverwalk Park located in downtown Chelan. Along with fine arts, crafts and music there’s a children’s area full of fun and adventure.

One popular event is the silent auction where patrons will have the opportunity to bid on donated pieces of art from some of the top artists in the Chelan community. The event is sponsored by the Lake Chelan Arts Council and the proceeds go to support the local art community including the murals, sculptures and scholarships. In September, this area is host to the 14th annual Lake Chelan Shore to Shore Marathon, Half-Marathon and 10K runs. Presented by the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce, the race benefits Chelan and Manson High School teams and programs, as well as the local chapter of Girls on the Run. In October, the first two weekends of the month are dedicated to the Lake Chelan Crush Festival. Celebrate the grape harvest and watch the grapes as they tumble through the press and taste the raw juice. Wineries throughout the Chelan Valley have events, dinners and special tastings, Oct. 3-4 and 10-11. Details are at lakechelanwinevalley.com.

The sixth Annual Mahogany and Merlot Vintage Boat Show is an ‘on-the-water’ boat show and free family-friendly event held Oct. 2-4. Classic cars will be showcased on the shore along with Vintage Unlimited Hydroplanes from the Hydroplane and Raceboat Museum in Seattle, Vintage Inboard ‘Limited Class’ Hydroplanes, and Antique and Classic Mahogany Runabouts from the Golden Era of pleasure boating.

Hydro exhibition races will begin early Saturday morning, plus there’s a classic boat parts swap meet, wine barrel furniture, delicious food booths or enjoy the action from the beer and wine garden.

A family pass runs for $30 and is good for two adults and three students or seniors. Adults are $10 and students and seniors are $6. 5 year-old and younger are free.

Back for a second year, the Manson Summer Nights Concert Series returns with an amazing lineup of artists performing their own new and original music from a variety of genres. Held every Sunday evening through September 6, gates open at 6 p.m. It’s outdoor festival seating—bring your lawn chair or blanket to Leffler Field, the open field between Wells Fargo Bank and Mountain View Lodge as you come into Manson, just before Wapato Point Parkway.

Parking is free, food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Concerts are held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. every Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults, 12 and under free.

The joy created by Chelan to Africa Benefit Concert is not a fleeting one. For every ticket sold to the event at Benson Vineyards, money goes toward Touching Tiny Lives and the Lake Chelan Food Bank. Back again on Aug. 1, the event aims to fight HIV/AIDS and poverty one ticket at a time.

“It’s a fun, generous evening of giving here and abroad,” Betsy Kronschnabel, Benson Vineyards tasting room and event manager, said.

More than 10 years ago, Chelan physician Amy Hutton watched A Closer Walk , a film portraying the AIDS epidemic, and knew she had to act.

“I thought, people are going to look back and think what did you do to stop AIDS?” Hutton said.

Her response was to start Chelan to Africa in 2004. Made up of individuals from the valley with a similar passion, the group began to search for an organization to support.

The answer arrived on Hutton’s doorstep when she received a magazine from Notre Dame in the mail. In it was a cover story on the Touching Tiny Lives foundation, a non-profit organization combating HIV/ AIDS in children through a safehouse and outreach in Africa. The foundation focuses its efforts in Lesotho, a small landlocked country where more than 100,000 children have been orphaned by aids, according to TTL. “I talked with others, and we decided African children are the most vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. They have no safety net,” Hutton said. “Touching Tiny Lives is small enough where we know what is going

on and the money we give goes to the safehouse.”

The HIV/AIDS epidemic became even more grave for Hutton when she first visited Lesotho in 2009. She would later join the foundation in 2011 as a board member and now directs their medical volunteers.

“The music appeals to all age groups and people really make the event a part of their summer,” Kronschnabel said.

“It’s really difficult for them to get medical care and even getting formula is hard. It’s really fragile — life,” Hutton said.

To empower locals to help the foundation, Chelan to Africa chose to host an annual benefit concert with food and an auction. Half the proceeds go to the Lake Chelan Food Bank and recently, the event has raised around $10,000 per year, Hutton said.

This year marks their eighth concert, and

Local sensation Kevin Jones Band will provide the live music and Chelan Catering Kitchen will cook dinner for purchase. Benson Estate Wine will also be for sale.

Tickets are $20 per person and can be bought at the Lake Chelan Chamber of Commerce or at the door. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with the concert beginning at 7 p.m.

“While they are sitting out and enjoying the meal and dancing they can enjoy one of the most spectacular views here in Chelan at Benson’s,” Kronschnabel said.
