It was love at first taste. In 2003, Jimmy Crocker was a BROista -- cheeky Dutch Bros jargon for a barista -working in Grants Pass, Oregon. It was there that he met his future wife, Elle, and attempted to win her heart with the best Caramelizer Freeze with Hazelnut he could muster. What do you get when you combine children’s toys with sporting equipment? Hooked on Toys, a unique retail store, set out to answer just that. Founded in 1986, Hooked on Toys is a local sporting goods and toy store whose goal, according to the company website, is to “bring families together under one roof.” The retailer does this by bringing together both child and adult, and by expanding upon what it means to play. “Our selection of products ranges from toys and sporting goods, to water tubes and inflatables, and even paintball equipment,” their website states. “With a diverse staff, many of whom have been with Hooked on Toys for 20 plus years, we are able to also offer a variety of services including Archery/ Bow Work, sighting-in scopes on firearms, and much more.” Hooked on Toys is active in the community by supporting local charities, nonprofits and events such as fishing derbies and game feeds, according to their website. They have won “Best Sporting Goods Store,” for nine years, and “Best Toy Store,” for the past 10 years.

If you are looking for furniture or appliances to fill your home, Sav-Mart is a safe bet. Walk in, and you will be greeted by walls of refrigerators, a warehousesized collection of furniture, and microcosms of kitchenettes positioned against a far wall. Sav-Mart is a locally owned store that specializes in furniture, mattresses, and major appliances, as well as garden supplies in the spring. “Sav-Mart was originally started in the early 60s by our current owner’s father,” said Nate Kansky, Sav-Mart’s sales and marketing manager. “Over the years the store has continued to evolve.” Being a brick-andmortar store with a sin-

gle location has allowed Sav-Mart to continually adapt to its customers needs and provide the best service possible, Kansky said. The store’s continual dedication to the needs of its customers shows. Sav-Mart has won “Best Appliance Repair,” for the past 9 years, “Best Furniture Store,” for the past 3 years, “Best Garden Center,” for the past ten and “Best Mattress Store,” for 8 years. So why have they been winners for so many years? According to Kansky, it comes down to ”experience, selection, service and a loyal customer base.” Sav-Mart’s department managers have a lot of experience — over 25
years, in some cases — and they put that experience to use by making sure every customer gets exactly what they need from Sav-Mart’s wide selection. The 44,000 square-foot store has over 35 mattresses on display, 120 recliners, rows upon rows of sectionals and sofas, and over 350 major appliances. “Purchasing a new mattress, piece of furniture or appliance can be scary. We recognize that,” Kansky said. “It's a large purchase, we try to make sure the customer is happy and comfortable throughout the process and most importantly a�er the sale. I think this has led to a loyal client base and as always we appreciate the support.”

Owned by Alisa Strutzel, Tastebuds offers a full menu that ranges from sirloin steak to pizza and includes other specialty items like cheese fondue. “Our mission is to provide the best food, service and experience,” said Strutzel. “Most all of our customers are now our friends, and a lot have become an extension of our families.” Strutzel is honored and grateful for the votes she has received that make this year’s award possible. Wenatchee Valley Humane Society The Wenatchee Valley Humane Society started out as a dream of caring for and rehoming displaced animals within our community. In 1967, that dream became a reality as Gwyneth and Bruce Mitchell established the non-profit shelter and opened their doors for the very first time. EZ’s Thick, juicy, and full of flavor -the burgers at EZ’s drive-thru are everything a hamburger should be. It’s no wonder they were nominated the “best burger” in Wenatchee for the past 3 years in a row, and the best drive-thru around for the past 9 years. Peter Ezetta, the owner and founder of EZ’s, started the restaurant in 1992 a�er being intrigued by the idea of a double drive-thru restaurant with no inside seating. Despite being inspired by a typical fast-food business model, however, there is nothing typical about EZ’s. “We’re not just another hamburger joint,” said Ezetta. “Fast food, to me, all of it tastes the same. We don’t fit the normal mold.” So just how does he create the best burger in town? Ezetta says the secret comes down to cooking everything to order,

using the freshest ingredients, and seasoning his burgers with homemade sauces and a spice mix he developed himself. Wenatchee is Ezetta’s home, and he strives to give back to the community that has given him so much. EZ’s gives away free hamburgers to mothers on Mother’s Day, fathers on Father’s Day and veterans on Veteran’s Day. And he is constantly working to give out food for other causes
as well. When there was a fire in the area, for example, Ezetta fed all the firemen for free. Ezetta is honored that the people of Wenatchee have voted to award his burger-joint “Best Drive-Thru,” and “Best Burger.” “I think [we won] because of customer service and the product we put out,” Ezetta said. “We are consistent, and we have quite an extensive menu and I think people appreciate that.”

Wild Huckleberry The Wild Huckleberry Restaurant is well-known among locals for having the best breakfast in town. In 1967 Clyde and Ruth Ballard purchased an ambulance service from a funeral home. For many years, the business ran out of the Ballard’s family home. They make it easy to do our job.” Hailey Van Lith and her senior classmates posted an impressive 96 wins to 7 losses during their playing days for Cashmere. This year they were undefeated heading into the Washington State 1A Championship game. They lost that game to Lynden Christian 58-55 at the Yakima Sun Dome. Van Lith finished her high school career with several awards and honors including Gatorade Washington State Player of the Year, Max Preps and AP state player of the year. She is the leading scorer in Washington state girls basketball history.

Saddle Rock
Stretching skyward, and crowning the western edge of Wenatchee, Saddle Rock is a rugged landmark that is impossible to miss. The landmark earned itself the title “Best Hike” in Wenatchee this year, and according to Hanne Beener, Trails Program Manager for the Chelan-Douglas Land Trust, the accolade is not misplaced. “Saddle Rock is by far the most iconic hike in the Foothills of Wenatchee,” said Beener. “It defines Wenatchee's skyline to the West.” Beener believes that the trail systems around Saddle Rock are perfect for families and hikers of all levels. It is this, combined with the location’s dramatic landscape, that make it the best place to hit the trails. “Saddle Rock Natural Area is easy to get to, provides amazing views, and gives a sense of solitude to trail users,” said Beener. “It's open year-round, and a brand new trailhead was built and opened in 2017. What really makes Saddle Rock the best hike, though, is that when I visit the property, I feel that the users reflect the true demographics of our community -- so many people come here and feel comfortable hiking these trails. That's really the sign that the hike is the best in our area.”
