In its 66th year, NASA India invited students to be catalysts for social equity under the theme ‘Assemblage.’ The focus wasn’t just on designing physical spaces but on actively contributing to more inclusive societies.

With informal settlements on the rise due to migration, architects were urged to address issues like inadequate housing and limited access to essential services. In a world where over half the population resides in urban areas, architects had to assess and enhance the quality of life, considering infrastructure, transportation, and public space accessibility.

The Writing Architecture Trophy challenged participants to explore how architects and institutions could effectively foster social equity. It prompted reflection on architecture’s purpose, its practical impact on societal equity, and the role of education in instilling responsibility.

In a rapidly growing Indian economy, the essays navigated the challenges and advantages of balancing large-scale infrastructure projects with social equity. This year, NASA India sought original, concise ideas and critiques that envisioned architecture as a powerful force for positive societal change.

GRIHA Trophy Weaving Socio-Economic Threads

In the realm of sustainable development, India led the charge with initiatives like GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment). Going beyond energy efficiency, GRIHA uniquely focused on social sustainability, addressing a

crucial aspect in the construction sector.

A prime example of GRIHA’s impact was the Multifunctional Promenade Development in Puri, Odisha. This design challenge seamlessly integrated socio-economic aspects, aligning with GRIHA guidelines for inclusivity, resource efficiency, and environmental harmony. The trophy envisioned a space acting as a catalyst for positive socio-economic impact, weaving together cultural richness and modern functionality.

The design, featuring cultural pavilions and recreational zones, prioritised flexibility and community engagement. With a focus on inclusive design and local materials, the trophy aimed at fostering economic growth within the community. This year marked a milestone with 85 student entries, making it the first time we received such overwhelming participation.

As we approach the open jury on 29th February 2024, anticipation builds for the unveiling of groundbreaking ideas that would shape the future of architectural innovation and sustainable urban development. Stay tuned for the
