‘Copper, copper!’ Marie shouted as she ran across the White Bridge that morning trying to catch the girl with the auburn coloured hair. The last thing Jess Boulton imagined when she was walking to work as an estate agent in Ashtons in Welwyn Garden City would be that a week later she would be getting pampered by Marie and her fantastic team at Greys Hairdressing, styled by Amanda Risley and Sarah Keefe at John lewis & Partners and getting her make up done by Lisa Attridge at Dior to appear on the cover of to|morrow.

After a scorching Summer with record breaking temperatures, there is one thing you can predict about the British weather; it is totally unpredictable. We were up against the elements once again, fighting the 30mph winds in our quest to capture the shades of autumn in Welwyn Garden City.

And Autumn we captured indeed (see picture of Autumn the dog)

Our talented photographer Zoe Cooper was not only responsible for the amazing cover shot but also for the production and location scouting together with our team, (as well as a helping hand from Lee and Clare from

This year we have been spoilt with a warm summer and beautiful sunny days, which are now being replaced with a nip in the air and evenings drawing in.

Celebratory events have been taking place across Hertfordshire and the rest of the country including services at Westminster Abbey and Big 7Tea parties where staff, volunteers and patients came together to share memories over a cuppa. Here in Welwyn Garden City, the Borough Council very kindly agreed to turn the Coronation Fountain on Parkway a magnificent shade of blue right through July.

So, for the NHS’ 70th, we’ve been asking people who live in Hertfordshire to give a little something back and make a pledge to help the health service – perhaps by giving blood, volunteering or giving feedback on a service they’ve used, or committing to living a healthier life – by stopping smoking or eating a better diet. This September the BID teamed up with the Mental Health charity ‘mind’ and Daniella Dines (founder of lifeforce World) to host a two-day event in the town centre raising mental health awareness. The days consisted of regular sessions of gentle yoga stretches and meditation. mindfulness meditation can positively impact mental and physical health. Whether it’s by reducing stress, improving sleep, increasing focus, or improving relationships, research shows mindfulness works.

In addition to those sessions there were two incredible teachers providing great insight to how the mind works and providing some great tips and tools to help manage your own mental health.

The event was free to all BID businesses and their staff. The public paid a small fee of £4 for the sessions and all the money raised went to the charity.
