Even the name of the article made us catch our breath. “The Dawn of the Dumb House,” a fascinating piece that ran in Town & Country, by Kristen Bateman, featured the gorgeous stylings of designer Ken Fulk, with photography by Douglas Friedman. Dumb us down, we say! We were intrigued to learn that during his new client “intake,” superstar designer Fulk begins with a “Fulkfessional,” a Q&A that is intended to reveal what takes top priority at home, and apparently, among Fulk’s favorite questions is, “Dumb house or smart house?” The story showcases philanthropist Christine Schantz’s Marin County, California, circa-1925 home and, according to Bateman’s writeup, one of Schantz’s goals was to create a residence that could last at least three decades with no further renovations. Naturally, that meant that all of the “smart” features that seem to captivate most people were not options for Schantz. As Bateman wrote, Schantz wanted a family retreat, not a command center. Per Fulk, artisanal millwork, detailed plaster, light switches that look like old fashioned brass toggles, a REAL knickknacks, and family photographs make this dumb house a welcoming, warm home (naturally, no TVs in the bedrooms!). While smart houses have been extolled in pop culture for decades—the Jetsons, anyone?—in this AI age, less tech means fewer eyes, and more privacy. In speaking with WelSpotted about her T&C piece, Bateman shared a not-so-surprising fact when it comes to QTN, “I learned that the people working most closely with tech want to be the furthest away from it in their homes. The biggest luxury is moving away from overcomplicated machines and going back to simplicity.”
