The Strategic Path Forward

Members, Three years ago, our leadership team, members of the Board of Directors and Advisory Board gathered to lay out a three-year strategic plan for Energy Workforce & Technology Council. I’m happy to say, we have made great strides in reaching our goals and are on our way to developing the next strategic plan to keep us on a continued upward track.

The goals included in the 2019 roadmap included Energy Workforce taking the lead in demonstrating positive contributions made by Member Companies through collaboration, training and education, advocating an “all of the above” energy strategy that leverages all of our energy resources, and making Energy Workforce a respected resource for Members to engage in federal, state and local policy issues specific to the energy services sector, engaging across party lines.

Energy Workforce is meeting these goals, while remaining leaner than many other trade associations in our field and maintaining a competitive edge. A significant portion of our time is focused on government affairs, pro-advocacy speaking and media engagement. Our team is also simultaneously focused on workforce development programs, events, diplomat trainings and Membership and Chapter programs. Through this allocation, we have been impactful and have met our primary strategic goals.

As our industry continues to be agile and contribute to reducing global emissions with new technologies and innovative production practices, our Committees have been focused on sharing best practices and providing strong engagement on promoting new solutions and technology from the energy services sector.

We also engaged with the "Energy in Transition" podcast, promoting the role of oil and gas in a lower carbon energy future featuring the great innovations of Council Member Companies. I believe we are on a path to Energy Expansion, and that global leaders must recognize the role of oil and gas to in providing affordable, reliable

energy, economic stability, food security and primarily national security around the world. We are not transitioning away from oil and gas, but expanding to new, higher tech, more efficient practices in the industry while also reducing emissions.

I want to highlight some of the outstanding activities the team has accomplished and continues to develop. Energy Workforce is educating policymakers and the public through engagement and communications, including more than 140 meetings with Biden Administration officials and members of Congress, eight events with elected officials, five formal regulatory comment letters submitted on topics including NEPA changes, methane regulations, supply chain, SEC climate disclosure requirements and federal leasing. Additionally, our SVP of Government Affairs Tim Tarpley and I have testified on behalf of the energy services sector before three Congressional committees and the Congressional Western Caucus.

I am excited for our future and for the future of oil and gas. As we build on our advocacy and media outreach, we continue to evolve a strategy that ensures we are meeting the needs of our Members. As the industry is ever evolving, we will evolve, as well.

I am proud to fight for this industry and our Members that are in the forefront of innovating and implementing the best in new and improved technologies to make energy production stronger in the U.S., more efficient and emissions-reducing.

Focusing on Agility CHART INDUSTRIES JILL EVANKO EMPOWERS WORKFORCE

T

he oil and gas industry's future will be tempered

around free cash flow and building on demand, which drives less variability and provides steadiness, said Chart Industries President & CEO Jill Evanko.

Chart Industries is a leading manufacturer of highly engineered equipment applications in the clean energy and industrial gas markets. Led by Evanko since 2018, Chart has helped customers expand and grow investments in technology.

Over the past few years, Chart has relied on existing customers and maximizing relationships to expand and grow investments in technology and assisting customers in lowering emissions and/or developing clean technologies.

“All the inorganic investments and acquisitions we have done in the last two years have been done without a banker,” Evanko said. “We work through the relationships we already have and build on those natural synergies.”

Building on existing relationships has grown Chart’s returns, while allowing for new, innovative technology processes and expansions to address clean energy challenges across multiple industries.

“We bring in the founders of the technologies we have in our portfolio once a month to brainstorm on how to take technologies for our traditional customers and cross-sell in a way that is affordable, easy and will address a challenge for the customer,” she said.

For example, one idea stemming from these sessions was the development of a containerized water treatment system that hooks on the front end of a hydrogen electolyzer when clean water can’t be found in the field. Chart developed a system that catches rainwater, cleans it and produces clean

hydrogen.

These innovative business practices have been the standard for Chart. A major part of their business is building out a menu of options for customers. They focus on four categories: clean water, clean power, clean food and clean industrial.

“We can do a total solution, or the customer can pick a piece of the solution,” Evanko said.

“Our commercial sales teams give customers a variety of options. Here are three ways you can solve the problem. We may be able to do two out of the three, and the third they may have to go somewhere else, but we give them those options. I believe, broadly, you get more exponential growth when the industry is thinking as a whole.”

She used carbon capture to explain where customers may need to invest a small amount for the technology, but in the end, it saves money while producing cleaner practices that support ESG goals in the long run.

“For example, if you want a carbon capture facility at your existing asset, we will install it, we will design it, and its cost will be about 40% higher than you operate today,” Evanko said. “But 20% will come back in CO2 reuse. We are helping customers with options.”

Chart also targets three areas of investors: clean tech shareholders, OFS shareholders and industrials shareholders. Through this practice, Chart has increased investments while continuing to meet investor ESG requirements.

Supply Chain Challenges

As supply chain challenges continue to increase, Chart is also facing new ways to address short supply and increased pricing. They are more constructive in the projects they take on and focus on being

agile in their business practices.

“Supply chain has been a major issue for us – supply chain logistics and material input costs,” Evanko said. “Material has been especially brutal with the lack of stainless steel, carbon steel and aluminum being our top three supply challenges.”

When asked if she sees an end in sight, Evanko said, “When people ask, is today better than yesterday, the answer has not been yes. I would say supply chain challenges will last indefinitely.”

Being Realistic with ESG

While Chart is implementing innovative customer relations and empowering its workforce to be agile, they also have well defined ESG goals – with executive pay tied to ESG and complete support from the Board of Directors.

Evanko notes Chart is much more agile than they were 12 months ago. She empowers her team to look both locally and globally for supply.

“With respect to ESG, we think of it two-fold. One is how we help our customers. Second is how do we help our own ESG targets, and we make this known throughout the company,” said Evanko.

“With increased demand, you must be strategic and not take on all the work that comes your way,” she said. “In the oilfield that can be tough as you are looking to increase productivity and volume.

towards ESG goals, while also meeting returns.”

To map out their ESG path, Chart hired a sustainability consultant to identify areas of the company where they are able to reasonably make changes without overtaking the day-to-day operations. The consultant helped them identify tangible projects to address ESG, while still making positive returns for the organizations. One example is the installation of solar panels in their shop in Italy. It saved Chart money, and it helped address ESG goals.

Evanko says to be successful in meeting ESG goals, you must set measurable metrics.

“With the assistance of our sustainability consultant, we gathered our starting off point, our data, pointing to here’s what our emissions are and what our GHG intensity is. Then, we decided we would scale that between now and 2030 and go down by 30%. That is our base metric. We are able to then measure it, produce our sustainability report, and have data that backs up our decisions,” she said.

“To be successful, you must know your metrics and have a roadmap. It is ridiculous to put a goal out if you have no way to meet it.”

Mission and Talent

Evanko is especially proud of Chart’s workforce and its ability to maintain and reskill workers through a cyclical environment. A few reasons they have been successful is through culture and their training development programs.

“We have four key themes at Chart, number one is safety. Number two, be nice to customers. That may sound silly, but it is imperative to the success of the organization. Number three, strong work ethic and number four is to give back and have fun.

Every one of our employees knows these four key themes,” she said.

She also highlighted the worker focused training programs. Twenty percent of Chart’s workforce is made up of veterans, and they partner with Workshops for Warriors to offer welding training to those looking to expand their skills and experience.

Chart also has rotational engineering development programs, engineering internships and an

emerging leaders program, which includes employees in all aspects of their careers – from early career to those with many years of experience who may be looking to contribute in new ways.

“We have field service employees in the program, and they work on high impact projects across the company, which can range from a tax project to implementing capacity expansion,” Evanko said.

“Talent programs for us are broad, but very impactful for our business.”

Chart also has volunteer committees and working groups. Through the leak detection group, they saved almost $1 million from identifying leaks in the field. They have also identified environmental and energy inefficiencies, as well. The mission to make the company better underpins everything they do through these training and volunteer programs.

Evanko is proud that Chart has established a very diverse Board of Directors.

“We have four women, two of those females are African American and we have our first black female Chair. She is one of only three black female chairs of publicly traded companies,” Evanko said. “We are 50% diverse with the best people in place.”

By having an already diverse Board established, Evanko believes this gives Chart more freedom to focus on multi-year strategies, and how to undertake Board transitions.

Global Energy

Evanko also discussed the global energy environment, pointing out that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has led to a more pragmatic dialogue when it comes to energy expansion. She thinks the industry will not return to speculative build being the main driver for their business practices.

“Those really high cycles of ups and then downs are going to be tempered because there is more consciousness around free cash flow,” she said.

“They will build when it is in demand, which will drive less variability and provide steadiness. I’m super positive on the future, including in oil and gas.”

Innovating the Path to Prosperity in the Oilfield

O

ver the last 100+ years, innovations in the domestic oil and gas industry have made the United States both the largest oil and the largest natural gas producer in the world.

While this country is blessed with plentiful resources, innovations in oilfield services have enabled us to continue to exploit those resources while meeting the demands of the modern operating environment.

Many oilfield services companies have endured significant operational cutbacks and layoffs in recent years due to turbulent market conditions and capital starvation. The industry is now being called upon to meet an increased demand for services despite cost inflation, labor tightness and supply chain constraints.

These challenges necessitate further innovation.

Market deterioration that began in late 2018 forced the oilfield services industry to underinvest in equipment maintenance and personnel recruitment due to lack of profitability and cash flow. This was further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic caused a sudden reduction in demand during a time that OPEC+ was increasing supply, creating oversupply of oil and gas commodities as well as the equipment and services needed to drill, complete and produce.

In 2022, with the military conflict in Ukraine and the related sanctions, we have experienced a sudden reduction in supply while demand is increasing. This sudden reversal of supply and demand imbalance has driven resurgent demand for oilfield services and equipment.

Innovation is playing a key role in enabling operators and services companies alike to increase activity while improving efficiency, profitability and ESG practices.

At Piper Sandler, we have an active M&A and capital markets advisory practice that helps oilfield services and equipment companies gain liquidity through a sale or access to capital. As such, we track many companies with technological innovations that enhance the oil and gas services industry.

The introduction of new solutions tends to gain traction when addressing the most pressing challenges facing 10

Well Servicing Magazine/June 2022

customers (the oil and gas operators), and these often arise during the early stages of cyclical market recovery, which is when we frequently observe technology-driven market share gains. Recently, these challenges have primarily involved lower returns on capital, labor shortages, safety issues, supply chain disruptions and an increased stakeholder focus on emissions footprints.

As such, innovative solutions have focused on enabling operators to drill and complete wells cheaper and faster, maintain production for longer, reduce personnel, reduce safety risks, do more with less and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Ultimately to be successful commercially, these innovations need to drive an economic value either directly by increasing profitability or indirectly by reducing the cost of capital (or both).

A few select themes that have become prevalent areas of innovation through our lens as a M&A advisor: • While automation has been an overarching solution across many other industries, its penetration in oil and gas has generally lagged behind. However, we are now seeing automation thematically in many innovative technologies being applied at the modern wellsite, such as automated field ticketing/ERP systems to reduce waste, automated directional drilling systems that enable drilling faster and more accurately, automated completion systems that eliminate non-productive time between stages, reduced reliance on laborr and reduced exposure to human error. We’re representing companies with some exciting and disruptive technologies automating surface equipment during frac operations to dramatically increase continuous pumping time by eliminating human intervention between stages and facilitating switching out fluid ends while still pumping. Automation also has tangible environmental benefits from more efficiently producing oil and gas faster, longer and with fewer people (and therefore fewer trucks).

• As ESG continues to become more important across all industries, Piper Sandler expects to observe a significant profitability and/or cost of capital advantage for companies that facilitate reducing scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions profiles for oil and gas operators. This has driven a rapid growth in the number of new technologies to measure, test, reduce and capture emissions. We’ve

advised some remarkably innovative companies in this subsector that are introducing solutions from very different perspectives, including gas cloud imaging surveillance and long-range laser networks for detection and quantification of emissions sources.

• Reducing volume of potentially (or perceived-to-be) harmful chemicals used during completion and production operations has long been an area of environmental progress, and innovation in the oil and gas chemicals subsector has addressed this concern. We have advised companies innovating nanochemistry for completion and production applications, deploying natural substitutes for synthetic ingredients that have higher cost and carbon footprints, and developing novel completion and production chemistry programs that have a material benefit to well productivity.

• With skyrocketing diesel prices coupled with ESG initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, switching away from diesel to natural gas burning engines/turbines has been an important trend in the industry that has driven capital investment and M&A. We have advised numerous oilfield services companies in strategically enhancing their next generation dual fuel or natural gas-powered exposure through acquisition. We expect this trend to continue, and innovation around logistics and processing of natural gas at the wellsite could further enhance cost savings and emissions reduction.

• Similarly, the “electrification of everything” theme has become prevalent in the oilfield, and it is driving innovation across equipment and services as well as primary/ backup power sources, storage and delivery. We’ve observed disruptive technologies building an emerging supply chain in batteries, engines, turbines, microgrids and many other areas all capitalizing on this theme.

Historically, innovation at the wellsite has generally accrued to the benefit of the oil and gas operators over the long term by reducing threshold economics of wells.

However, we think the oil and gas services and equipment supply chain is poised to benefit from innovation and efficiency gains in the coming years, as the industry rewards companies capable of delivering innovation that will enable operators to increase hydrocarbon production in a more safe, environmentally conscious and profitable manner. ......................................................................................................

This voluntary data collection program is used to determine recipients of the Safety Awards Program, which are presented at Summer Meeting to companies in seven different categories based on scale of operations.

INNOVATIONS AT THE WELL SITE/

Wireline Electrified

A

t a trade show, one of my managers grabs me and says excitedly, “Have you seen the Tesla Truck?” My mind immediately turned to Elon Musk breaking the window at the debut of his angular abomination of a pickup truck, Tesla's Cyber Truck.

My manager says, “No, the wireline truck that runs on batteries!”

ESG initiatives and regulation in service companies and E&P companies have been encouraging a move away from diesel power to lower emission solutions.

Wireline has not been immune to these pressures, and solutions have increased in popularity and use over the past several years. For those traditionalists who grew up in the industry driving diesel powered units around the country, this change can sound scary. But for many, like my manager, the electric units are pretty cool to see and play with in person.

To be fair, Texas Wireline, a Fort Worth-based wireline truck manufacturer, was not undermining the Tesla trademark by coining the phrase for their wireline truck that utilizes batteries as part of their electric drive solution. But the analogy my manager used of Tesla and the excitement that electric solutions create in many people are real. Clean. Powerful. Fast. Efficient.

The wireline industry has already seen its share of industry changing technological advancements to meet the needs of widespread horizontal completions. The industry innovated the wireline from a steel cable and grease injector to a greaseless cable with a control head that allowed us to run cleaner, faster and with less friction. We evolved from pressure activated switches to IP addressable switches to shoot multiple clusters more reliably. Perhaps electric powered wireline units are destined to take the same trajectory, to quickly become the norm rather than the exception, or maybe they will hold a niche market.

The advantages to the E&P customer are the same as with an electric frac fleet – reduced emissions and noise, and an argued increase in efficiency. For the wireline company, there is an argued economic advantage even if the customer is not requiring it. The savings in diesel and the lower cost to maintain electric motors over diesel motors has return on investment that cannot be offhandedly dismissed. But when it comes to emissions reporting, the devil is in the details. If a generator is used 14

for power, look closely at the diesel usage and emissions of that generator versus a tractor to see actual emissions reductions.

However, the technology is continuing to evolve and there are many options available to wireline companies seeking to make the jump. Not every option is going to be practical for every job. More manufacturers are innovating in the space, and wireline companies are also developing in-house solutions.

Legacy wireline units are traditionally powered by their tandem diesel engine tractors, which drive a PTO powering hydraulics. A hydraulic generator provides electric power for the cab over hydraulic power for the operation of the wireline drum.

The most straight-forward way to convert a legacy wireline unit from diesel to electric is through an electric motor to power a hydraulic pump. The hydraulics on the legacy unit remain relatively unchanged. Some units will still allow for the tractor to provide power via the PTO as an alternative if an electric power supply is not available or fails. The source of electric power to the motor, whether a generator or shore power, can also supply the needed power for the recorder cab.

The conversion components can be mounted within the wireline truck or on a trailer. The same electric over hydraulic system can be used to power the crane hoisting the pressure control equipment and sheave, along with other ancillary hydraulic equipment on location, such as quick attach well locks or wireline rams.

In new build wireline units, the trend is to eliminate hydraulics altogether and use a direct-drive electric motor powering the wireline drum. This approach has been engineered to provide the power and speed of a traditional hydraulically driven drum, if not more. While there is arguably a different “feel” to operating an electric direct drive drum, the units are increasingly popular with crews, particularly due to their quietness.

By freeing the wireline unit from a diesel tractor, options that depart from the traditional tandem tractor and wireline cab are increasingly available. There are currently options on the market for wireline units as gooseneck trailers, on tracks like a tank, and in modular skid units where multiple wireline drum units can be controlled by a single operating cab.

As mentioned at the beginning, manufacturers are also harnessing batteries as an option for flexibility and security. Should the primary power source be lost, the wireline truck can still run-on battery power – perhaps allowing a tool to be pulled from the hole where it would otherwise be stuck until power was restored. One manufacturer’s system has an option to use a small diesel motor to recharge the battery pack using a fraction of the diesel required to power a tractor and PTO setup in a legacy unit. This allows the unit to easily be used where there is no shore power to location.

With innovation comes new issues. As a safety matter, electrical grounding and bonding between the truck, ancillary equipment such as the crane, and wellhead are important to consider. And while an electric motor requires much less maintenance than a diesel motor, it would be a misnomer to say the systems are fully maintenance free. Show me something that needs to be regularly greased, and I will find you an oilfield hand ready to ignore it until it starts squealing.

Beyond safety and maintenance, the standard in wireline perforating technology on completion sites is the use of IP addressable switches. Grounding issues can impact the telemetry used to address the switch from the wireline unit through the cable.

However, fully electrified units are adding features meant to enhance safety. This includes remote control

packs that allow the wireline engineer to operate the drum while outside the truck when picking up or laying down tools. This allows the operator better visibility and communication with his or her team on the ground and the crane operator.

Further, greater technology is being employed in the drive systems, providing more data on run performance, and even seeking to automate aspects of a run in an effort to reduce human error in operations. A tech can easily adjust the torque and speed limits of the drum, allowing the wireline provider or E&P the ability to engineer limits into the operating system of the truck.

While we might blame ESG initiatives in both government regulation and corporate investment for the move from diesel to electric, the advantages the technology brings to performance at the wellhead looks to stand on its own. While it may not be a universal option at this time, it is an option that should not be dismissed. .....................................................................................................

Implementation of an Engine Management Solution for the Field A SUSTAINABLE EMISSIONS REDUCTION STRATEGY FOR A DRILLING CONTRACTOR

E

very company has its own cultural and strategic strengths from which it builds.

One of Helmerich and Payne’s (H&P) core values is to Actively C.A.R.E. (Controlling and Removing Exposure) for ourselves and others. This development of an Actively C.A.R.E. focus within the organization is a positive example of how a company can effectively lead its employees in doing the right thing.

Carbon emissions reduction requires solutions that are both cost effective and scalable across a large global rig fleet to reduce excess fuel and associated emissions. As our industry and others address the need for sustainable environmentally responsible choices, we can leverage our culture to reinforce the importance of understanding how H&P can positively contribute and lead the process of reducing emissions while drilling a well.

Not every well is drilled the same. Some operators choose more aggressive well construction parameters as a result of technical need or a desire to push technical limits. These differences make it challenging to decide and agree on a baseline for performance with most of the debatable topics being outside the control of the field crews.

Without debate, the most direct way to reduce emissions is to reduce fuel consumption for the same task.

H&P’s emphasis on reducing excess engine hours, and associated fuel consumption, is a foundational step of which the field crews themselves can take ownership.

This focus is also applicable for all engine types or fuel mixtures chosen by the operator.

Objective

H&P desires to reduce emissions associated with a rig’s activity while maintaining flexibility for our customers and growing shareholder value. The first step to accomplish this is for our rig crews to provide the most fuel-efficient operations possible. A system was designed and implemented to provide sustainable benefits 16

for all parties by focusing on the foundational concept of excess engine hour reduction. Excess engine hours is explained as the combination of engine count and engine load that can safely be reduced by at least one engine without power limiting the rig.

Process

The first step to developing our solution was analyzing carbon reduction techniques available on the market and the relative carbon footprint of all the available rig power options.

Providing electrical power to the rig via highline was the clear winner, but most of today’s wellsites do not have this infrastructure in place and are powered by gensets (engine + generator) on location.

Relative carbon impact of a diesel engine versus a dual fuel or natural gas engine was analyzed and verified with the original equipment manufacturers. There were cases for each engine type. Generally speaking, the most effective rig power option with the smaller carbon footprint and cost to deploy was the diesel engine.

H&P wanted a solution that field crews could own.

Therefore, the program needed to be free of time-intensive tasks of isolating variables associated with a given rig activity or other complexities that field crews do not have control over.

As previously stated, the most direct way to reduce emissions is by reducing fuel, specifically by reducing excess engine hours for rig activities. Using engine load thresholds to decide when to turn an engine on or off proved to be a universal solution to provide carbon reduction in an efficient manner and is not dependent on a rig type or specification.

Results

Analyzing our engine data was the first step in the process. We observed an opportunity to improve fuel efficiency, and we found rigs and wells with higher and

lower potential gains but for which there was a common level of improvement to be targeted.

A “field first” approach was developed to implement a sustainable solution to reduce excess engine hours that field crews would own.

Two wells were analyzed, comparing fuel consumption and emissions benefits. The first well had unplanned trips that were corrected for in the analysis.

Well 1 was drilled without any focus on engine management and operated with at least one excess engine online 44.6% of the time. After correcting for unplanned trips, a potential savings of 1,434 gallons of diesel and 14.9 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) was indicated in post-well analysis.

Well 2 was drilled the next month with a conscious effort to reduce excess engine hours and had 10.2% percent of the well drilled with at least one excess engine online. A potential savings of 533 gallons of diesel and five tons of CO2e was indicated in post-well analysis.

By focusing on excess engine hour reduction alone, the gains from Well 1 to Well 2 were 902 gallons of diesel and almost 10 tons of CO2e.

Annualized, this is an equivalent 16,500 gallons of diesel and 181 tons of CO2e per rig. The field implementation achieved significant and sustainable improvements by reducing underloaded engines throughout the well cycle.

Field crews were able to deliver this improvement from one well to the next as indicated by the date range at the bottom of the figures.

Further gains can be realized with additional enabling technologies often accompanied by additional costs.

The improved baseline performance achieved with engine management as demonstrated in this example will allow for proper evaluation of additional technologies and drive fit-for-purpose solutions that solve the outcome needs of the industry.

Another benefit of excess engine hour reduction is the conversation that occurs with customers about how to make further improvements. Since these talks are occurring at a near optimized fuel and emissions state, more meaningful conversations on parameter selection and their impacts on fuel consumption and emissions are possible.

The Rise of E-Frac

et-zero carbon emissions goals and energy industry expectations are on the rise throughout the U.S.

electrical line power, turbine generators fueled by natural gas, or dual fuel engine technologies.

As a result, more E&P companies are requesting, and in some cases insisting on, alternative well stimulation frac solutions from their contractors to help reduce their overall carbon footprint at well sites.

As oilfield service companies shift to lower emissions fuel sources for their frac units, GD Energy Products and other high-pressure pump manufacturers are constantly innovating and improving their technologies to help minimize the carbon footprint for their customers and for the environment, especially at shale sites across the country.

That’s where electrification, also known as “e-frac” comes into play. Hydraulic frac pump manufacturers have designed market-specific pumps with the latest technologies to meet the needs of future Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) demands. These new technologies empower pressure pumpers to transition to electric-powered frac units and diversify their fleets with different fuel options.

Alternative Frac Solutions

Traditionally, large semi-trailers were brought in housing diesel-powered frac pumps to power a frac site.

Now, there are other options in the mix, including using 18

Natural gas is known to have fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and when used for electricity production, it emits 50-60% less carbon dioxide (CO2) than coal. In Texas alone, from 2011 to 2018, Permian Basin operators reduced methane emissions intensity by nearly 64%. In that same time period, oil and gas production in the Permian has increased by over 210%, and it continues to rise. In its Annual Energy Outlook 2022, the U.S. Energy Information Administration projects that natural gas production will increase by nearly 25% through 2050.

Industry Challenges and Innovations

Now that the pandemic is showing some relief and the U.S. oil and gas industry has a mostly positive outlook, companies are beginning to ramp up their capital planning and spending. To meet energy industry expectations and ever-changing regulations, many firms are exploring their own unique and sustainable solutions.

Because well completions at shale sites require intense amounts of pressure and a high volume of water, sand and other chemicals to pump through the well, pump manufacturers are constantly creating new, powerful and efficient technologies to help maintain equipment.

Some hydraulic fracturing pumps like GDEP’s Thunder 5000 are built to give their customers an all-encompassing and versatile unit for electric, gas and diesel-driven fleets. A powerful, 5,000 HP pump with an 11-inch stroke as well as stainless steel fluid ends factor in a longer performance life at a slower speed. The stroke length is important as it defines the speed of the unit and reduces fatigue cycles. The Thunder 5000 is an extremely high-powered pump optimized for e-frac, dual fuel, turbine direct and conventional diesel power sources.

An e-frac system with higher horsepower pumps requires less equipment and fewer trailers at the well site, saving operators capital spending costs and fuel efficiency in addition to potential downtime from frac engine

repairs and reducing the footprint at the well site.

In addition to generating electricity on the pad site, some E&P companies are currently testing and using battery power, which includes large trailers with multiple batteries that can either boost or operate overnight to reduce the noise and to sustain the system until fracking continues in the morning.

Future Environmental Risk Reporting

The ongoing transition from fossil fuels to clean energy is not a straightforward process and is going to continue down an uncertain path until more regulations are in place. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) recently proposed new rule changes that would require many oil and gas companies to disclose climate-related risks and other governance information in their registration statements and reporting, including both direct and indirect GHG emissions. If approved, the proposed rules could go into effect later this year with phased compliance dates to follow. .....................................................................................................

Spoolable Composite Pipe A VERSATILE & COST-EFFECTIVE SOLUTION FOR A VARIETY OF APPLICATIONS

or more than 20 years, spoolable composite pipes have been used in upstream oil and gas systems. Some industry experts estimate that up to 100,000 kilometers of spoolable composite pipes are currently installed around the world.

As market needs change, the many benefits of spoolable composite pipe – including environmental, safety and cost advantages – are increasingly recognized. This opens the door to using spoolable composite pipe in a variety of oil and gas applications.

Due to the excellent corrosion resistance of spoolable composite pipe, most installations to date have been in multiphase gathering systems, or in produced water transfer or disposal systems. However, it is also used for condensates, dry gas or refined fluids (such as diesel).

Recently, a significant shift in the market is a need for larger pipes, operating at higher temperatures and pressures. Leading North American pipe manufacturers are working to deliver new technologies that address these operating conditions, including pipes in diameters up to six inches that operate at pressures up to 2,250 psi and temperature ratings up to 82°C. No matter what the end use, premiere spoolable composite pipe products are designed and tested in accordance with API 15S. Often, they are available with an API monogram confirming that they have met the API test requirements.

Typically, spoolable composite pipe consists of three layers: • an inner liner used for fluid containment • a reinforcement layer (typically either synthetic or glass fiber, or steel wire or plating) • an outer layer used to provide mechanical and UV \ protection to the reinforcement layer High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is commonly used as both the inner liner and outer jacket for spoolable composite pipe. A cost-effective material, HDPE performs well at most temperatures found in oil and gas production. It also has excellent chemical resistance, 20

and depending on the type of reinforcement used, composite pipes can be used in applications with significant amounts of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide.

Most spoolable composite products have metallic fittings that either connect pipe segments or terminate the pipeline. Commonly, these fittings have corrosionresistant coatings or are constructed of a corrosionresistant alloy. Combined with the HDPE pipe liner, these fitting materials create an extremely corrosion resistant product.

The fittings can be installed with hydraulic compression, swaging or manually applied torque. Regulations require that connection installers are trained (or certified).

Many manufacturers provide their own expert installers, and often train third-party contractors as well. A leading manufacturer of composite pipe takes project security and integrity to the next level with data-empowered digital technologies that allow customers to operate their assets at peak performance.

Temporary Surface Lines for Flowback or Well Testing

Another example of the ever-expanding use of spoolable composite pipe is using it to tie produced fluids into a central facility. This provides numerous economic and environmental benefits. The speed and ease of installation allows the pipe to be installed, and then respooled and installed repeatedly as temporary lines, which is ideal for flowback operations. This is an example of the sustainability benefits of spoolable pipe.

Spoolable composite pipe is also a good fit for unconnected new wells to store flowback and initial production fluids. Historically, these installations required temporary separators, flare stacks and storage tanks.

As an alternative, spoolable composite pipe provides a cost-effective solution for these fluids, including mitigating the loss of revenue from flaring.

concerns involved in this application: • reduced flaring emissions • improved fluid containment • reduced energy costs – with no need to transport fluids by truck In contrast to traditional installations, spoolable pipe can be rapidly deployed on the surface. Depending on site conditions and pipe size, as many as three kilometers of pipe can be deployed in a day. This allows exploration of isolated wells to be tied into central facilities quickly and affordably.

Hydrogen Sulfide Scavenging Coil

Spoolable composite pipe also offers a unique opportunity to place a long length of pipe in a small footprint.

In certain situations, it is appropriate to have gas flowing through the linepipe while still placed on a reel.

Practically, it is possible to have hundreds of meters of pipe operating in a footprint as small as a few square meters. An example of this application in West Texas in early 2022 utilized this treatment to sweeten the gas before it enters downstream processing equipment.

Gas Transmission Line Bypass

Canadian gas distribution companies are increasingly recognizing the benefit of spoolable composite pipe, particularly as high-pressure lines from a steel trunk line to smaller take-off points. These lines are permanent and are often installed with a plow, which allows a high rate

of installation with minimal ground disturbance.

Gas distribution companies have also used temporary spoolable composites pipes to bypass sections of large-diameter steel trunk lines. This temporary bypass line allows the company to maintain gas supply while doing maintenance or repairs. The high-pressure ratings of 1,500+ psi can typically match the system design and allow the system pressure to be maintained during maintenance. After the work is completed, the pipe can be respooled and reused to reduce the cost of future projects.

Spoolable composite pipe continues to be a key product for oil and gas customers. However, as customers recognize its environmental, safety and cost benefits, the list of product applications transcends traditional uses and grows in the worldwide market. .....................................................................................................

Automation Driving Ability to Fracture Rock

owning, a leading technology provider, has developed an automated system that methodically eliminates the time between plug-and-perf stages with the goal of fracturing the reservoice 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The ability to fracture a reservoir 24/7 is a monumental improvement over having to be on a frac site 24/7, which occurs today. Plug-and-perf stages start with pumping down a bridge plug on wireline with perforating guns to a given horizontal location near the toe of the well. Once the plug is set, the zone is perforated. The tools are then removed from the well, and the fracture stimulation treatment is pumped in.

In the implementation of an automation system, the primary barriers to fracturing the reservoir 24/7 are: 1. The time between stages (this includes transition time and pressure tests) 2. Downtime associated with gate valve maintenance and failures 3. Pump maintenance Following an automation roadmap similar to those utilized for autonomous driving, Downing has automated multiple sub-systems over the past four years and integrated these sub-systems into a comprehensive automated surface system.

The elimination of these barriers provides wide-ranging benefits including 24/7 fracturing, cost reduction, safer operations, increased frac fleet utilization, logistical support and completion design flexibility.

hydraulics introduced at Level 1. Level 2 adds functional automation, such as hydraulic latches or greasing manifolds. These functions are tied together into sub-systems in Level 3 as seen in automated frac valve, automated latch and automated zipper control. Level 4 automation digitally ties these surface sub-systems together enabling the sub-systems to work together without human intervention.

The roadmap culminates with a closed loop, Level 5 system that ties together the three primary frac systems: pump, wireline and surface systems. These systems function without human intervention, operating from stage-to-stage without human input except when required to stop the process for resupply or maintenance.

Current State of Plug-and-Perf Completions

Most plug and perf completions today employ Level 1 or Level 2 automation, which are relatively manual-operated process levels. At these current levels, hydraulic valve actuation is completed with levers, greasing is done manually, and wireline is attached via a latch.

Few, if any of these sub-systems are integrated, requiring human intervention using manual checklists to ensure proper function and sequencing. Functional time tracking is generally handled via spreadsheets with the start and stop time at the discretion of a company representative, leading to inaccuracies and inconsistency between frac jobs. Without consistent time stamping via automated algorithms, assessing the performance of one frac job versus another, as well as identifying improvement opportunities, is exceedingly difficult.

Why Automation?

Utilizing the roadmap developed for autonomous driving as a template, the company developed a hydraulic fracturing automation roadmap that has guided its development path to achieve its vision of fracturing the reservoir 24/7.

The hydraulic automation surface system roadmap provided the how to automate but not the why. As stated above, primary barriers exist to fracturing a reservoir 24/7. Each barrier involved significant human intervention, safety concerns and human-induced errors that no process could fully eliminate. Automation was the only way to completely eliminate each barrier and safety risk.

The automation levels describe specific stages in the development of a closed loop hydraulic surface system.

(and accompanying data) provides a path to continual, permanent improvement to frac workflows. As anomalies occur, data is analyzed, root causes identified, and workflow algorithms updated to fully eliminate the problem.

Human-driven workflows rely on training and process, both dependent on the individual’s adherence to the process and retention. Even with a highly trained workforce, personnel change and new training is constantly required and risk of operational failures rise. Automation eliminates an undue reliance on the competency of the individual.

Automation of Subsystems

To eliminate the first barrier – time between stages – a sub-system was developed that fundamentally changed how the transitions between wireline and frac were completed. With current industry practice, the well is shut-in with a gate valve, the frac stack above the gate valve is bled down to zero pressure, lubricator attached, filled, and equalized, and the entire stack pressure tested between every stage.

To achieve a simplified, repeatable workflow transition between wells, a completion system consists of the following integrated sub-systems providing full Level 4 automated control of the surface system without entering the red zone.

• FS Valve – enables entry of any tool into the pressurized wellbore with rapid equalization without closing in the well.

• FS Latch – enables attaching the lubricator without entering the red zone.

• FS iControl – controls all valves on location, en abling ability to continuously pump. Greases all valves during actuation.

• FS Ball Drop – allows dropping balls into the well bore without entering red zone.

• FS Control Center – self-contained operational center containing all supporting equipment.

The integrated system eliminates the time between stages with near instantaneous transitions from one stage to the next, enabling operators to continuously pump for the duration of the completion.

With the elimination of transition time and common issues between stages, the primary remaining barrier to fracking 24/7 was the ability to keep pumps online.

Operational procedures and safety protocols prohibit personnel from entering the red zone while pumping, limiting the ability to exchange pumps during the frac. In addition, pumps do not have the operational life available to fully complete a frac job without repair.

The solution to this problem was to develop an automated system capable of shutting in a pump needing maintenance, replacing it with a new pump, and bringing the new pump back online. The objective was to achieve this while continuing to frac and without entering the red zone. With this barrier effectively eliminated, 24/7 fracturing is within reach.

The industry will experience significant efficiency gains with the advent of 24/7 fracturing. Assuming a current frac fleet average of 15-16 hours of fracturing per day over the course of a job, a new completion system enables up to a 50% increase (24 hours of fracturing) in efficiency, resulting in fewer days per well and faster online production for operators, higher pump utilization and revenue for frac companies, as well as safer operations and less emissions per well.

Benefits of Operational Efficiency

Completion engineers are focused on how best to drain the reservoir to maximize production at the lowest lifting cost. Unfortunately, surface system inefficiency can impact completion design as engineers have to balance the ideal design with operational considerations.

With the advent of continuous pumping, the operational switching cost between stages is negligible, giving engineers more design flexibility to consider various techniques. An operator may utilize additional, shorter stages or adopt the Kiel process.

Eliminating barriers to 24/7 fracturing significantly impacts the economics of completing wells. Analogous to the transition of tricones drill bits to PDCs in the early 2000’s driving drilling efficiency, large increases in completion efficiency will lower well costs and result in more wells completed per year. Frac companies will meaningfully expand the capacity of their fleets without expanding their asset base leading to higher revenue, profitability and returns on capital. Operations will become safer and more consistent, enabling better planning of resources. And without adding operational cost, automated completions will provide completion engineers the design flexibility to better drain the reservoirs, potentially leading to higher production per well. .....................................................................................................

hen you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meager and unsatisfactory kind: it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely, in your thoughts, advanced to the stage of science." Lord Kelvin The late physicist Lord Kelvin was known for his “stream of consciousness” ramblings; however, what he is essentially articulating is the principle “if you cannot measure it, you cannot improve it.”

Such is the dilemma with materially quantifying Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) attributes, particularly the “E” side of the equation. In order to transition away from “greenwashing” tactics to a more sophisticated method of climate accounting, we must first recognize that there is not a single point of truth, perspective or providential device that will provide an answer, let alone the correct one.

Understanding that climate science is an extremely complex discipline – consisting of a litany of scientific sub-disciplines, and in some cases, geopolitical economics and market analysis – it stands to reason that objective measurements are needed to properly feed the climate model; principally measurements acquired from multiple points of view. Humans are naturally uncomfortable steeped in ignorance, and climate science – which has become contaminated by politics, media bias and personal emotion – has further clouded our understanding of environmental impacts from anthropogenic activities.

Fortunately, through vertical integration of technologies, coupled with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), we now possess the ability to measure greenhouse gases (GHG) from both biogenic and anthropogenic sources from the ground to space and everywhere in between. Ground-based instruments consisting of standard metal oxide sensors to hyperspectral and multispectral imaging devices are used to collect “asset-grade data” and represent a class of devices known as continuous emissions monitoring systems (CEMS).

These instruments are useful in understanding the characteristics and behavior of certain GHG species under various operational circumstances; however, local

measurements (though continuous) limit our ability to understand the system as a whole. For that, the same technologies used at the asset-level can be used by drone reconnaissance, helicopters and slow-speed airplanes to capture system behavior on a much larger scale.

Although mid-air techniques capture system attributes beyond the asset (level), they are limited by dwell time and weather conditions which only provide a snapshot.

Due to the democratization of space technologies, satellites have become useful in detecting and quantifying GHG emissions at the asset, area and/or basin level and may be used to qualify ground-based and mid-air observations.

Furthermore, microsatellites (CubeSATs) which may circumnavigate the earth up 12 times per day, provide a higher degree of asset-revisitation which may alert stakeholders to potential environmental upsets and impacts.

Combined with AI and ML intelligence, this new measurement ecosystem stands to revolutionize the way operators make decisions and creates a level of transparency that may cancel out some of the political, media and “community science” noise while optimizing climate performance. ................................................................................................

Energy Workforce Members discussed issues important to the energy services industry, including potential bipartisan energy legislation, the energy services and technology sector’s role in energy and national security, supply chain, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and more.

In Deputy Secretary Turk’s remarks, he discussed the global challenges impacting energy resources, and the Administration’s activities in the energy sector in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Turk explained that the Administration would support LNG exports to Europe to support our allies in their effort to wean themselves off Russian gas.

Members advocated directly with Congressional members and staff during 30 meetings. They also heard speeches from Department of Energy Deputy Secretary David Turk, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Diplomacy Laura Lochman, Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (D-TX-07) and White House Senior Advisor and Infra26

Legislative Update

Energy Workforce is a strong advocate for our members by engaging with government at both the state and federal levels to elevate the industry and tell the story of the men and women of the sector who bring affordable, clean energy to the country and the world.

Although he didn’t specify any new actions that may be taken, he listed previous orders from his Administration like the Strategic Petroleum Reserve release, the E15 expansion and the Defense Production Act for solar and wind components. The letter concluded with an insistence that companies explain the rationale for their reduced refining capacities, and prepare solutions to resolve this issue without further delay.

“Build Back Better”

With the clock ticking on this Congress as the summer moves forward and the October break for campaign season approaches, Sen. Joe Manchin is looking for a last minute “hail mary” to salvage some of the climate provisions that were contained in the “Build Back Better” bill that he torpedoed earlier this year.

Of particular importance to our Membership is the prospect of a revival of the methane fee becoming a part of this package. Sen. Manchin has repeatedly expressed interest in including the language in any package and has been discussing the prospect over the past few weeks. While actual bill text has not been officially circulated, it is understood that it may be similar to language passed by the House earlier this Congress.

Administration Letter to Industry

In mid-June President Biden sent a letter to several companies with major oil refining operations on the topic of high gasoline prices and what could be done to bring prices down. The letter was sent to the heads of Exxon Mobil, Valero Energy, Marathon Petroleum, Phillips 66, Chevron, BP and Shell and specifically addressed their oil refining operations.

Taking a strong tone throughout, President Biden made historical comparisons between the price of gasoline and price of oil per barrel. He went on to acknowledge how the war in Ukraine contributed to the recent spike in prices, while also claiming that refiners are intentionally operating at reduced capacity. He asserts that these companies are exploiting a wartime situation to increase profit margins at the expense of the American consumer.

This letter sparked several immediate responses from many of the companies addressed in the letter, which included facts about specific refining operations and assurances that companies were not taking part in nefarious actions to inflate the price of gasoline. Additionally, some initial solutions were publicly offered including a temporary waiver of the Jones Act and streamlining of federal permitting processes.

The Biden Administration plans to continue conversations on this issue with the companies addressed in the letters, along with a wider group of companies represented at the National Petroleum Council led by Secretary Jennifer Granholm.

REGROW/Orphan Wells Update

In November 2021, Congress passed a bipartisan bill led by Senators Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico and Kevin Cramer of North Dakota, which funds a plan to plug every documented orphan well in the United States and lays the groundwork to reduce the number of unplugged orphan wells going forward. The Revive Economic Growth and Reclaim Orphaned Wells (REGROW) Act of 2021, which was integrated into the bipartisan infrastructure bill, provides $4.275 billion for orphaned well cleanup on state and private lands, $400 million for cleanup on private and tribal lands, and $32 million for research.

The Department of Interior released a memo in early January indicating there are more than 130,000 documented orphaned wells – more than twice the amount previously estimated by the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission. Plugging orphaned oil and gas wells presents an opportunity to mitigate harmful emissions and provide an economic boost to communities transi-

tioning away from fossil fuel economies.

The bidding process for each state’s orphan well contracts started in March of this year and the REGROW-allocated funds began rolling out to contractors in early May. The funds distributed to the states through the REGROW Act are based off of the state’s orphan well profile.

SEC Proposed Rule on Climate Disclosures

More than a year after requesting public input on potential rules on climate-related disclosures, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) released a proposed rule in March of 2022. In sum, under this rule companies would be required to disclose climate-related risks, including physical and transition, that could impact businesses and this information would be included in typical financial disclosure documents that are provided to investors. The SEC proposed rule aligns very closely to the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and experts are recommending companies familiarize themselves with the framework.

In response, Energy Workforce & Technology Council carefully analyzed the new draft regulation and submit-

ted comments to the SEC. These comments focused on serious concerns that the proposed rule, especially the Scope 3 requirements, are beyond the jurisdiction of the SEC and if enacted would put a significant burden on the energy services sector and the economy. Additionally, the Energy Workforce comments requested increased time for implementation and stronger protections for filers.

It is likely that the proposed rule will now go through a review process by the SEC where they analyze the comments and finalize the rule. This process usually takes around six months so we should not expect a final rule before the end of the year. Once the final rule is published, there will likely be both legal and legislative challenges in the House and Senate.

The Congressional Review Act is a process that Congress can use to challenge regulations issued that it feels are overly burdensome or beyond the scope of the submitting agency. Depending on the scope of the ultimate final rule, we can expect a challenge. However, while the initial challenge could pass with a simple majority, the President would likely veto such a resolution, and the prospects of this effort are not certain.

he Energy Workforce 2022 Annual Meeting included leaders from all sectors of the oil and gas industry, speaking on the unique challenges and opportunities presented by the cuirrent market and industry dynamics.

Following keynote remarks by the 70th Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette, as well as Chris Campbell, Chief Strategist, Kroll, power panels focused on winning the narrative when discussing the oil and gas industry, breaking supply chain disruptions, influencing energy policy, and economic analysis and outlooks.

The Annual Meeting, which was held in Point Clear, AL, highlighted the theme Energy Evolution: Embracing Opportunities. Through this lens, speakers addressed how the energy services sector plays a critical role in the technical advancement of the oil and gas industry, noting

that digitalization, remote technology and automation are all changing the field and allowing companies to create close partnerships between operators, service companies and technology providers that reduce operating costs and environmental impact while increasing well production.

both Republican and Democrat, knew about Trevor Reed. I wanted them to know his name and how much he matters. He is a patriot, Texan, Marine, Boy Scout, and the son of Paula and Joey. Most importantly he is an American—and he loves this country.

What pieces of legislation or initiatives from this Congress on behalf of the Texas 11th district are you most proud of?

Together with my colleagues in Congress, and his parents’ tireless efforts, we repeatedly raised Trevor’s case to the Administration—eventually getting the attention of the Secretary of State and President Biden himself.

I am fortunate to represent the Permian Basin, which accounts for approximately 40 percent of U.S. oil production and 15 percent of our natural gas production.

The Permian is the largest secure supply of crude oil in the world—serving as a key geopolitical tool for America and our allies. One of my top priorities in Congress is setting a national energy policy that not only provides cheap, abundant and ever-cleaner energy to American families, but also ensures our allies can power their economies without relying on malign actors.

I am so proud that so many in our government put patriotism over politics in our work to bring Trevor home.

This is what our country needs more of.

“Midland Over Moscow” and the “American Energy Freedom Act” are the two most important pieces of legislation I’ve offered this Congress. Both pieces of legislation direct the Administration to use American resources to keep the U.S. and our allies safe and no longer dependent on our foreign adversaries for energy.

Your Energy Freedom Act legislation covered everything from Federal Lands leasing, to federal permitting and regulations targeted at the industry. How has the reception been from your colleagues in the House, specifically from those on the other side of the aisle? Where do you see a headway being made?

President Biden willingly gave away American energy independence through his assault on the oil and gas industry. We must have an energy security strategy that puts American production at the forefront.

They will force the Biden Administration to develop an energy security strategy and fuel the world with American — not Russian — energy, permanently halt the Nord Stream II pipeline, establish a fair regulatory structure for producers here at home, and unleash American Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) exports to fill the needs of our allies.

With over $5 national average gas prices and record-high inflation largely due to high energy costs, I am hopeful that my colleagues in Congress will recognize the importance of energy security and join Sen. Ted Cruz and me in our legislation to restore American energy dominance.

One of the most rewarding and meaningful missions in Congress has been advocating for the release of Trevor Reed and welcoming him home to the United States.

We do have some bipartisan support for our pro-energy policies, but more work needs to be done in persuading others on the importance of the long-term use of thermal energy sources, especially U.S. produced natural gas. Industry can play a vital role in this effort; we have a great story in Texas, we need to tell it.

Trevor is a U.S. Marine Veteran from Granbury, Texas, who was unlawfully detained in a horrible Russian labor camp since 2019. Finally, after nearly three years of incarceration, he was brought back safely to U.S. soil on April 28, 2022.

Energy security is one of the most important issues around the world today, how do you see the war in Ukraine affecting the global energy mix in the near

and long term, and what issues will the U.S. face in terms of energy security domestically?

Europe’s current energy crisis should wake every policy maker up to the truth that we need affordable, abundant and secure energy. We are not in an energy transition, but an energy expansion. World demand for energy is projected to increase by 47 percent by 2050 over 2020 demand. The United States — not Russia, Iran, or China — must position itself to fill this demand.

Global demand for Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), much of which is developed in the Permian Basin (10 percent worldwide) is expected to increase nearly two-fold in less than twenty years. This is a massive opportunity for the United States to fuel the world, make America stronger, and bolster the energy security of our allies.

We have a small window of time to act, and we can’t let this opportunity pass us by as a nation. Europe, Latin America and Asia shouldn’t rely on nefarious actors for their most basic energy needs. We need to make it easier to ship more made-in-America goods across the globe – exporting American energy molecules produced by professionals right here in the Permian Basin.

An energy expansion policy means recognizing the importance of the long-term use of fossil fuels, especially U.S.-produced natural gas, and U.S. LNG must be central in our discussions with our transatlantic partners and in an energy strategy.

Washington seems increasingly polarized on major issues affecting Americans and their everyday lives.

Do you think there are areas where the country and its Congress can come together to get things done?

There may be increased polarization between Americans and Members of Congress, but I do have hope. The bipartisan support and advocacy from Members across the aisle in advocating for Trevor Reed is one good example of how Texans and Americans can pull together when called upon.

You have had the opportunity to host several members of Congress out to the Permian recently, what have their impressions/reactions been? As someone who is around energy as much as we are, how can we make inroads with the Members of Congress who aren’t as familiar with the industry?

Representing the Permian Basin—the largest secure supply of crude oil in the world—means bearing the

torch for the largest secure supply of energy in the world. In Congress, I have made it my mission to educate other Members and the general public about what we do in the oil and gas industry. It has been an honor to host Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy, the Republican Leader of the Energy & Commerce Committee Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the Republican Leader on the Natural Re-sources Committee Bruce Westerman, and many other Members of Congress in the Permian Basin to talk about energy security. When they visit, they see first-hand how the industry operates and impacts so many lives.

I am constantly advocating for the industry and the good that it does for our country, but I need every operator, owner, and worker to join me in vocalizing these positive effects.

Explaining what we do in the oil and gas industry and why it matters to other communities around the state and Nation will be critical in reaching Members who are not familiar with energy production.

I am asking you to help me in spreading the message that the United States must not only be energy independent but energy dominant.
