Give a little Phew, it’s the end of the year and time to relax, recharge, have parties and bond with family. It is also a great time to take stock and embody some of the principles that define this season: sharing, caring and giving to others. Giving gifts is one of the ways we demonstrate these principles. Follow some of our guidelines to make sure your gifts count, make them heartfelt and full of meaning. Then of course there is always the challenge of excess, that comes with celebration.

Practise prevention and balance, and guard your health.

Also be aware that some people may feel lonely or depressed during this time, reach out to others and be inclusive with your festivities. Doing your part for charities will help spread goodwill during this time.

Traditionally this is a chance to reconnect with far-flung family members and friends; it’s also a time to reconnect with yourself. In the Gift issue we encourage you to come up with new ways of doing an old thing, by being adventurous in your food and menu choices and creating next generation traditions that can endure for years to come. We also encourage you to make healthy and love-filled choices this holiday season by looking after your body, mind and soul.

For me, this is a time for slowing down and enjoying the simple pleasures.

It’s also a time for reflection and gratitude for what this earth has provided.

Spending time with loved ones, I realise just how blessed I am. Making me aware that being responsible for my own health isn’t just about me, it’s also about honouring those who love me.

So look after yourself this festive season by making the best choices possible for your health. Most importantly, infuse laughter and joy into everything you do.

The health boosting effects of laughter are immense and such fun too.

ORYX desert SALT comes from our own soil, out of Africa, from the heart of the earth.

We all need to get down to earth and enjoy the simple, time honoured foods and medicines that are given to us in their most natural form. Salt is both a food and a medicine and without this vital mineral we could not exist.

To the connoisseur, each type of salt has a unique composition and imparts a special flavour to certain foods. This is why chefs of international standing send for ORYX desert SALT. They know how special it tastes, even if they are oblivious to the extra minerals and trace elements it provides. They may not even appreciate how this salt helps to balance their blood pressure and prevent restless legs, muscle spasms and cramps. Our body is made out of a 70% saline solution. Salt maintains our cellular fluid balance, both within and without each and every cell. SWEET POTATO & PROSCUITTO CANAPES MAKES 16 PIECES PREPARATION: 15 mins COOK TIME: 40 mins 2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into 8 wheels 1 tbsp olive oil 3 tbsp mayonnaise lemon juice to squeeze 8 slices of proscuitto 16 pieces of ripped rocket Heat oven to 200°C, oil and season sweet potatoes, then roast for 30 mins. Add a piece of rocket on the top of each potato wheel, then fold the ham pieces on top of the rocket. Add lemon juice to mayonnaise and put a generous dollop on the ham. (gluten free, low fat)

CHICKEN SATAY MAKES 5 PORTIONS PREPARATION 30 mins COOK TIME: 20 mins 4 skinned and deboned chicken breasts 3 tbsp soy sauce 1 tbsp chili paste 2 crushed garlic cloves 1 tbsp sesame oil 1 tbsp xylitol 1 lime halved ½ lime sliced 15 skewers 5 shot glasses SATAY: 1 tsp canola oil 1/2 small brown onion finely chopped 1 crushed garlic clove 1 small finely chopped red chilli 1/4 cup peanut butter 1/2 cup water 1 tbs fresh lemon juice 1/2 tsp balsamic vinegar 1/2 tsp brown sugar Slice each chicken breast into 4 strips and marinade with soy sauce, chilli paste, garlic, oil and xylitol. You can leave this for up to a day, (minimum 2 hours). Thread each piece

onto a bamboo skewer. Cook for 15 mins in preheated oven at 180C. While cooking make the satay. Heat oil in saucepan on medium heat. Add onion, cook for 5 mins, add garlic and chilli stir well for a minute and remove from stove. Stir in Peanut butter. Put on low heat and add water, lemon juice, vinegar and xylitol. Stir until sauce thickens. Pour equal amounts into shot glasses. Pour lime juice onto the skewers and put 3 in each shot glass. t’s the time of year when the world slows down and gets into a chill-out holiday mood. Everyone heads for the outdoors to soak up the rays and enjoy freedom from the year’s cares and worries. Fun-filled days come with an excess of food, drink and activity, make sure you protect your body from too much of everything.

FLUID MOTION Too much sun, alcohol and activity in the December weather can leave you dehydrated. Essential electrolytes are lost when whenever we lose fluid. Even if you don’t think you’re sweating too much, dehydration can happen and causes everything you need to live life well

headaches (that’s the hangover feeling you get after a big night on the town), fatigue, dizziness and more. To prevent dehydration, make sure you drink regular glasses of water. Don’t wait until your body signals thirst - drink water regularly. Most athletes know the vital part hydration plays in performance, that’s why water stops are essential during marathons. If you do find yourself feeling a little woozy after a long day in the sun, get hold of a rehydrating mixture. Drink water with added minerals.

Be wary of sports drinks, although they contain electrolytes, some of them contain added sugar that can make the dehydration worse.

SLATHER IT ON Protection from the sun is vital so be sure to use a good all-round sunscreen, and reapply every 20-30 minutes (even if it does say its waterproof). Most sunscreen’s SPF number only relates to UVB rays, which are responsible for burning the skin. UVA rays have the deeper effect of creating wrinkles.

Then there is the biggie, skin cancer, too much sun is a major cause of skin cancer.

The skin is the body’s largest organ; make sure you protect it well.

MAKE YOUR OWN SUNSCREEN

IN EXCESS To protect your liver from the excesses of too much rich food and alcohol, take silymarin extract, a powerful antioxidant derived from milk thistle. Alpha lipoic acid is a brilliant antioxidant and N-acetyl-cysteine increases blood flow to the liver, improving nutrition. Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory that prevents build up of excess fat in the liver.

Keep a few bananas on hand – they’re rich in electrolytes and potassium, which help with dehydration and muscle cramping.

Watermelon, that favourite summer fruit, is not only a fat free treat, it’s also full of electrolytes and amino acids. It is a natural moisturiser and has many vitamins like B6 (B6 is thought to assist with anxiety, so if your family overwhelms you over the holiday season, serve up loads of watermelon to keep tension at bay).

PACK A BAG Keep a bag packed with outdoor essentials like rehydrate powder, sunscreen, lip protector, mosquito repellent (just in case the day is so good you stay out late), and some dried fruit treats, or healthy rusks for an energy boost or to settle rumbling tummy.

In a saucepan on low heat combine: •

70 grams of apricot kernel oil • 35 grams of coconut oil • 35 grams of bees wax

Mix gently until all ingredients are combined, then remove from heat and add 100 grams of distilled water. Stir until thick and smooth. Add 2 tablespoons of zinc oxide and 1 tablespoon of wheat germ oil.

Leave to set and store in a dark coloured glass jar.

ANSWER Dear N From your question it sounds like you may have an acid reflux problem or an incompetent valve between your oesophagus and stomach, allowing stomach acid to leak upwards. I would need to conduct a full history and examination before I can confirm a diagnosis and offer any solutions.

After almost three decades of scientific research, Dr. Candice Pert (who discovered endorphins in our bodies) has proven that our emotions are triggered by bio-chemicals and that these bio-chemicals are found throughout our bodies. The same receptors that line the cells of our brain, line the cells of our intestines, liver, lungs, heart and our entire body. What this means is that our memories, fears, joy, grief, excitement, happiness and all other emotions are stored and experienced in our bodies. They are our body’s gift to help us navigate this life.

t last it is a scientific fact that we can be “heartbroken” or have “butterflies” in our tummies, or feel “love sick”. Our emotions correspond with feelings in different parts of our bodies and this is a great opportunity for us to listen to ourselves and create perfect health, mental calm and emotional bliss. If we pay attention to our bodies, we can heal ourselves of depression and anxiety and create calm, joy and a lightness of being.

The key here is to not deny our “negative” emotions. We tend to think that to live a fulfilled life, we always need to be in a state of perfect emotional lightness - not angry, not sad, not mourning... but if we could live without these feelings, would we be able to love, to care, to grow, to create?

We are here to be human, to experience the widest range of emotions and feelings that we can so that we may evolve into masters of life. By simply understanding our bodies are like roadmaps of our emotional health, we can focus our attention onto any part of us that feels “tight” or “stuck” or even painful, and lovingly soothe, heal and release the emotion that resides there. Our mental focus and loving attention are all we need to heal ourselves from emotional pain.
