RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Nectarine Ginger Sesame Chicken Salad Heather says "This salad is so good that I had it twice last week and I think I will make it again this week. I always a love a great Asian inspired salad, but the addition of sweet juicy nectarines are not only wonderful in the salad on their own- but in the dressing they are incredible. I enjoy a little sweetness to a salad dressing, especially with the ginger, and I love how the beautiful sweet seasonal fruit does that naturally." https://heatherchristo.com/2016/07/10/n ectarine-ginger-sesame-chicken-salad/

Organized Travel As summer approaches, the promise of sunshine, relaxation, and adventure looms near. Planning vacations and summer travel takes time and effort, as does staying organized amidst an unpredictable and fluctuating schedule. Being intentional about staying organized going into this season will help you have more time to enjoy the freedom and fun of summer.

Make a packing list Create a basic packing list for everyone to follow as you prep for summer trips. Include how many of each essential item to pack, if any special items are needed (bathing suits, special occasion attire, goggles, etc.), and list toiletries and relaxation items (such as a book, crafts, headphones, etc.). Begin packing three days before your travels to allow time to locate or purchase necessary items.

Stay organized with creative luggage packing options Use packing cubes to contain smaller items (socks, underwear, bathing suits), pack shoes in small cloth bags to keep the rest of your clothes clean, and don’t forget a laundry bag.

Store all travel items together I store all luggage items together, including toiletry bags and carry-on cases. I nestle smaller bags inside larger bags to save space. Don’t forget to include any travel comfort items (such as neck pillows, noise-canceling headphones, and sleep masks) with the stored luggage. Packing is much easier when you aren’t trying to locate needed-but-rarely-used items at the last minute. page 05

Create a pre-travel to-do list Don’t forget to add tasks such as taking out the trash, dumping and unplugging the coffee pot, running the dishwasher, running the sink and garbage disposal, and turning off the thermostat. It is so much nicer coming back home to a clean house!

Being prepared for your summer vacation, whether traveling or at home, will help you make the most of the glorious days of sunshine. Take some time at the beginning of the season to ensure you stay organized, and you will be efficient and ready for fun in your summer months.

Prepare for your summer fun at home Take the time to sort through swimsuits, water-sport equipment, outdoor games, and summer clothing. Throw away or donate unnecessary or worn-down items and take note of what you used most the previous summer (as well as what has been passed over multiple times). If everyone fought over the same pair of goggles last year, buy extras of those and donate the others! Ensure that all warm-weather activity necessities are easily accessible.

Embracing The Outdoors Safely PFAS Free Outdoor Gear for the Whole Family By: Amanda Klecker, www.healthyhouseontheblock.com

One of the big pieces of advice that I give to my community and my clients is that it’s actually really important to get OUT of your healthy house and get outside more than we think. We often are stuck indoors due to work or things that need to get done indoors, and so for those reasons, it’s important to have a low-toxin home. And even more, we sleep at home more often than we don’t, and it can be a great way to support our health and wellness. To have a space free from as many chemicals as possible is critical to our health. But what about when you are enjoying the outdoors with whatever outdoor gear you may need? Do you know how to find PFAS-free gear? It’s often something we don’t think about, but if you’re someone who enjoys a lot of time outdoors (especially in season or activities where you need gear, this can be a HUGE source of toxins in your life. After All, many items that contain PFAS are items that we either wear on our bodies or that we get warm in, causing them to emit even more toxins while we’re in close proximity. Getting outdoors is a great way to support your health and wellness, but you have to intentionally choose and use toxin-free outdoor gear that is free from PFAS chemicals. And that’s just what I’m sharing with you today — why you need to avoid PFAS, how to shop for PFAS-free outdoor gear and my healthy houseapproved list of outerwear and gear.

page 10

What are PFAS Chemicals? PFAS have been used since the 1940s when they were introduced to make cookware nonstick, clothes water repellent, and fabrics stain resistant. It’s a product that resists grease, water, and oil and makes it a very desired chemical. PFAS were designed to resist breaking down, and so unfortunately they remain in the environment forever. This is why they’ve been labeled a “forever chemical." Currently, there are over 90,000 PFAS chemicals that are present, and so it can become very difficult to even test for all of them in third-party testing facilities. While PFAS are used in outdoor gear, they’re also present in our homes and in all throughout our environment, and even in drinking water. Wherever we can limit these toxins, we’ll be giving our bodies the much-needed break it needs from this type of toxin.

PFAS & The Health of World and Our Bodies PFAS Chemicals have been studied for quite some time now, and while other countries such as Europe, have since learned to avoid this forever chemical, the United States is JUST starting to reduce our exposure to it. PFAS has been linked to a number of health issues through these studies, which include cancer, liver damage and change to the liver enzymes, decreased fertility, and increased risk of asthma, and thyroid disease. And many of these links were due to low exposure on a daily basis. (INFO) It has also been associated with negative impacts on the immune system, endocrine system, and reproductive system. (INFO)

page 11

Types of Outdoor Gear that Contain PFAS Jackets & Coats: From rain jackets to outdoor, cold weather coats, so many coats are intended to keep moisture out — which is great, in theory. These coats can not only contain a waterproof outer layer that contains PFAs, but the interior down can also contain PFAS in them as well.

Backpacks

Children’s backpacks and hiking backpacks often have a coating on them to keep moisture out of the interior of the backpack. And oftentimes this coating is made with PFAS to repel the moisture and any stains.

Boots

Hiking boots, rain boots, and winter boots alike can all contain PFAS as they try to get the product as waterproof as possible.

Hats & Gloves

Anything that’s meant to keep the water out is an item that could potentially contain added toxins. As well, anything with moisture-wicking technology or quick dry technology should be looked at more closely.

Baby & Toddler Carrier Backpacks

This one was surprising to me, but those backpacks made to carry children also contain PFAS most of the time. This is to keep your child and you dry from whatever sort of liquid may potentially come in contact with the backpack.

Tents

Outdoor tents are another one most of us don’t think about. We’re so focused on being outside that we oftentimes forget that we’ll be sleeping in a tent that could contain its own chemicals and toxins. PFAS are added to tents to repel water on the outside of the tent.

Sleeping Bags

This one COULD be the most important in my opinion if you do a lot of camping. Anything that surrounds our body for long periods of time should get special care to determine if it is as low in toxins as possible. PFAS are often added in the down or filling to reduce moisture.

Camp Mats

Camp mats also need to resist water and moisture on both the top and the bottom, which means it’s a prime candidate for added PFAS to make them water-repellent or moisture-resistant. page 12

Healthy House Picks For PFAS Free Gear Look for Brand Transparency Any brand that is willing to share with you the list of materials used in their products is a brand I’d likely continue to shop with. On the other hand, if it’s really difficult to find out what the materials are or even get a return phone call or email with questions you may have, it may be time to move on to another brand.

Look for European Companies Just like everything else it seems, Europe definitely has its act together in terms of avoiding and limiting toxin use in their products. In fact, Europe and some of the Nordic countries have been avoiding PFAs for quite a while, whereas in the US, we are still allowing these toxins in our outdoor gear consistently.

Look for Durable Water Repellency (DWR) WITHOUT PFAS One of the big needs of any sort of outdoor gear is that it has to be waterproof or at least water-repellent. DWR is a treatment that is added to outerwear to make the product water-repellent. Newer products use things like paraffin, silicone, fat-modified resin, and wax.

Don’t Always Trust Third Party Certifications Many third-party certifications actually allow for PFAS Chemicals in the product. Bluesign and Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZHC) both allow types of PFAS to be present in products and materials they certify. Okeo-Tex tests for 30 of the over 9,000 PFAS chemicals, but that means the majority of the chemicals could still be present.

Look for Natural Material Wool is an excellent insulator and is naturally resistant to moisture, so finding products that use things like wool, cotton, natural wax coating, etc. can be a great way to find a product that is low-toxin in nature. You can also look for natural rubber and 100% organic latex when looking for items that are waterproof.

page 16

As the world gradually emerges from the shadows of the pandemic, one thing is certain, people are more health conscious than ever, I would even say health anxious. Following the pandemic, preventative measures and personal hygiene were given more importance. Due to prolonged exposure to electromagnetic fields, our phones and electronics have become major health hazard. Families are more conscious of indoor and outdoor toxins, such as contaminants in our food, water, and air. And more study has been done on the connection between chronic stress and our mental health. However, it is crucial to strike a balance and avoid feeling overwhelmed by the multitude of factors to consider when pursuing a healthy lifestyle. The goal should not be to live a life consumed by burnout but to find sustainable ways to prioritize well-being. It is taking proactive steps, seeking support when needed, and finding a personalized approach to wellness. And with summer rapidly approaching, many of us eagerly anticipate vacations as a means of rest and renewal.

The Wellness Tourism Market Size & Trends Analysis reports an anticipated annual growth rate of 12.42 % between 2023 and 2030. It’s clear that health-conscious travelers have a high desire for travel places that promote wellness and self-care. In fact, 8,000 people were questioned by American Express Travel, and the results showed that 73% of respondents said they planned their trips to improve their mental and physical health. If you want to combat stress and burnout this summer, read along to learn more about emerging wellness travel trends:

Elevate Your Getaway: Transformative Activities for an Unforgettable Vacation

Even if you're not staying at a luxurious wellness resort, you can still incorporate wellness into your vacation. Remember, wellness is a personal journey, and by incorporating these simple steps, you can infuse your vacation with wellness and enhance your overall well-being, no matter what destination or resort you chose:

Indulge in a spa experience: Many hotels, whether they specifically market themselves as wellness resorts or not, often provide spa facilities for their guests. If your hotel doesn't have a spa, simply inquire at the lobby for recommendations on nearby spas that offer exceptional services.

Disconnect from technology: Take a break from technology to enhance your wellness experience. Limit your screen time, avoid checking work emails or social media constantly, and instead focus on being present and fully immersing yourself in the vacation experience.

Incorporate movement and exercise: Stay active during your vacation by finding opportunities for exercise. You can go for a jog or bike ride, practice yoga on the beach or in a local park, or even join a local fitness class or group activity.

Engage in cultural experiences: Immerse yourself in the local culture and traditions of your destination. Participate in cultural activities, visit local markets, try traditional healing practices, or attend cultural events. These experiences can enrich your overall wellness journey.

Practice mindful eating: Pay attention to what you eat and make conscious choices that nourish your body. Try to incorporate local and fresh ingredients into your meals, and savor each bite mindfully. Experiment with healthy and balanced food options that are available at your destination.

Embrace outdoor activities: Explore the natural surroundings of your destination by engaging in outdoor activities. Take walks or hikes, go for a swim in the ocean or a nearby lake, or simply spend time in nature to reap the benefits of fresh air and physical movement.

COUNTER PRODUCTIVE Which Countertop is Healthiest for the Home?

page 24

Creating a healthy home requires approaching every decision factoring not only the initial health impact due to chemical off-gassing but also the longterm effects from the entire life cycle. Cleaning, maintenance, and eventual replacement of any product need to be considered before making the final choice, as these things could be far more detrimental to one's health than the initial installation. Now calculate the cost, aesthetics, and availability, and this process becomes far more difficult. There are several situations in the home design process that fit the above statement. Flooring, plumbing fixtures, wall treatments, and appliances just to name a few. But in this article, I will be focusing on one of the most confusing areas of the home…kitchen, and bath countertop materials. Which is the best option for your new kitchen or bath? To help with the decision-making process, I developed the Degree of Green rating system in 2007 which has evolved into the Degree of Green Healthy Home (DGHH) rating system that I use today. There are dozens of reasons why a product, service, or system can be called green: recycled content, recyclability, natural, low energy, human friendly, and organic just to name a few. But none of these reasons are THE correct reason. None are incorrect, either. So why do manufacturers, retailers, and “building experts” lump everything into the same boat? Mainly, because they just don’t know any better. Today, Degree of Green plays a part in my educational portal to teach people how to build healthy AND green. Through my podcasts, videos, blog posts, and links to the best resources around the world, The Green Design Center-Building for Health is your trusted partner in building, remodeling, and simply just living in a healthy home.

LAMINATE Laminate countertops are making a comeback, folks. These materials a better than ever with an almost endless array of colors and patterns. Laminate counters start with an MDF or particleboard substrate that receives a layer of plastic laminate glued to the top side. The laminate itself is a layered material consisting of paper, melamine, and other resins. Once fully cured, this material is inert. However, the substrate can release urea formaldehyde unless it's sealed. Also, the adhesive is typically a contact cement, which can be quite odiferous during manufacturing. PROS: inexpensive, many choices, easy to install. CONS: not extremely durable, not heat resistant, water can damage the substrate so no under mount sinks.

Degree of Green Healthy Home Rating (DGHH): C+ Price Point: Low

CULTURED MARBLE Cultured Marble is typically used in bathrooms only as the man-made material is not durable enough for full kitchens. It is made from crushed stone in molds. This product consists of a mixture of 70-80% real marble and stone dust combined with polyester resin and dyes and is finished with a high gloss look. The manufacturing process is getting good enough to make it difficult to visually tell between cultured and real. PROS: inexpensive, easy to install, water and chip-resistant, integral sink bowls to eliminate caulk joints. CONS: scratches easily and is not repairable, limited colors and patterns, strong initial odor.

Degree of Green Healthy Home Rating (DGHH: BPrice Point: Low

Each countertop material I mention below will have its pros and cons. Meaning, there is no perfect product. What you have to decide on your own is what will be the most important factor in making your choice. If you decide on laminate because it’s the least expensive, you’ll end up replacing them far quicker than if you choose quartz. Yes, quartz is 3-5x the cost of laminate, but it’s also more durable and offers more installation options for sinks, and has fewer seams. You get the point. You’ve got to give a little to get a little. I have both ranked and provided information on the materials, keep reading. page 25

SOLID SURFACE Solid surfacing is a lot like cultured marble. It too consists of marble dust, polyester, and dyes, but acrylic is also added into the mix. This makes the material more repairable for scratches and gouges and offers both a glossy and a matte finish. Solid surfacing can be used all over the home, including tub and shower surround. These were the hottest countertop materials available until quartz came along. Pricing is about the middle of all the choices. PROS: Many colors and patterns, durable, integral sink bowls, repairable. CONS: Some stone patterns are not perfect, and can get stained or scorched.

Degree of Green Healthy Home Rating (DGHH): APrice Point: Medium

NATURAL STONE The natural stone category is huge right now. Granite, marble and quartzite being the most popular. In some parts of the country, granite is now the “entry” level countertops offered, even though they are more expensive. These mined mineral stones are durable and heat resistant, but they do require regular maintenance to keep them looking good. A sealer needs to be applied usually once a year to prevent staining and water absorption, and these sealers are not human friendly. While the stone itself is ultra-heat resistant, the sealers are not and will discolor if you’re not careful. PROS: Hard and durable, beautiful natural stone colors and patterns, thick slabs that look and feel substantial. CONS: sealing is required to avoid stains, cracking and chipping is not uncommon, natural stone can have random mineral streaks that some people find unattractive.

Degree of Green Healthy Home Rating (DGHH): BPrice Point: Medium to High

QUARTZ Quartz is definitely the hottest trend in the countertop space. Consisting of 90-95% natural stone quartz with a polyester resin blended in, these man-made slabs look almost exactly like the real deal without the required regular sealing. Soap and water to clean is about the only thing you’ll ever need to do. The material itself is inert, so chemically sensitive clients typically have no problems with quartz. PROS: excellent color and pattern options, water and stain resistant, long lifespan. CONS: hot pans can scorch, are not easily repaired, expensive.

Degree of Green Healthy Home Rating (DGHH): A Price Point: High

Paper COMPOSITE

PORCELAIN/SINTERED STONE

Composite tops are somewhat similar to laminate but without wood substrate. Dozens of layers of paper and resin are pressed together and heated to create a thick slab of material that can be used for countertops, shower surrounds, and even exterior applications. Most brands offer a small selection of dark, solid colors. However, some new entries into the space are bringing cool colors and stone-like patterns to the mix.

Finally, you’ve used porcelain tile throughout your home, so why not for the kitchen countertops too? Large format porcelain has slab sizes up to 5’ x 10’ and is fabricated similarly to natural stone. It's naturally water, heat, and stain resistant. If you like the idea of Carrera marble without having to deal with the cost and maintenance, then porcelain is definitely the way you want to go.

PROS: Price is attractive, water and heat-resistant. CONS: very limited selections, fabrication is not easily found.

PROS: water, heat, and stain resistant, harder than granite, near-perfect stone patterns. CONS: price, availability, limited edge profiles.

Degree of Green Healthy Home Rating (DGHH): A Price Point: Medium to High

Degree of Green Healthy Home Rating (DGHH): A+ Price Point: High

See remodelista article for more info.

So where do you start? Budget, aesthetic, and functionality, of course. But then factor in your needs and wants for low-emitting materials and easy maintenance, and your choice may not be so simple. Hopefully, this guide will make that process a bit quicker for you.

Wabi- Sabi Soulful Simplicity Eco-Design By: Cassy West

Wabi-Sabi is defined as a traditional Japanese aesthetic often described as appreciating beauty in nature that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. Wabi-sabi encourages us to recognize simple, natural living and to treasure what we already have. Embracing this concept brings a sense of calm and happiness which, in turn, benefits human health and wellbeing.

page 32

Wabi-Sabi in the Home

A Wabi-Sabi-inspired home is a restful space that nourishes family life and welcomes guests in a relaxed and restful way. It's a place for treasured things that carry love and evokes memories, not just new things bought or purchased on impulse. It's unpretentious styling, done in a perfectly imperfect way. A Wabi-Sabi approach promotes soulful simplicity. This means decluttering and beautifying but without the perfectionist tendencies of strict minimalism. Incorporating natural materials and textures, handcrafted ceramics, aged surfaces, and simple but thoughtful details. Wabi-Sabi style can bring a sense of calm and help you reconnect with nature while adding story and character to your space.

page 33

10 principles for a Wabi-Sabi-inspired Home Make the most of your entrance Tidy-up your entrance, putting items away. Put out some flowers. Invite visitors to leave their shoes at the door, Japanese-style, and try to encourage anyone who lives with you to make it a habit.

Declutter Decluttering saves you time and money and creates more space to appreciate the things you really love. Think clean, clear and welcoming.

page 34

Incorporate natural materials such as wood, clay and stone in your home, and organic fabrics for bedlinen, clothing and kitchenware. See how these bring a sense of calm. The eye and the imagination love imperfection, asymmetry and non-uniform surfaces.

Embrace nature Consider how you can bring actual nature into your space, with flowers, branches, seed pods, feathers, leaves, shells, pebbles and so on. Discover the joy of finding and styling these yourself, creating visual poetry with the gifts of land and sea.

Experiment with light Keep both light and shadow in mind, noting how the contrast changes your space at different times of the day. Embrace low light and darkness when it suits the season and your mood.

Activate the senses Consider the role of the five senses in your space.

Personalize your space Curate things you really treasure to decorate your space and nurture it with story and memory. Where possible, be creative with what you have, or repurpose items that have had a previous life.

How do you feel? Think about the importance of visual harmony. How do things look and feel in relation to other things in the room and the space.

Create the unexpected Adding a small vase on a windowsill; a framed photograph under the stairs, a book of your favorite poems on a guest-room nightstand.

Embrace seasonal changes Depending on the season, or time of year, consider how or why you need to use the space differently creating a soulful space in your home that will create memories to last a lifetime.

Planning for Aging in Place Tips and Strategies for Seniors and Caregivers By, Lucy Chatman

page 36

For many seniors, aging in place is a desirable option that allows them to maintain their independence and sense of familiarity. However, aging in place also requires support and assistance from family members and caregivers to ensure that seniors can remain safe, healthy, and comfortable in their homes.

One of the key aspects of planning for aging in place is ensuring that the senior's home is safe and accessible. This can involve making modifications to the home's design or layout, such as installing grab bars, handrails, or ramps, as well as ensuring that the home is equipped with necessary safety features, such as smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Staying physically active is important for everyone, but it is especially important for seniors who are aging in place. Exercise and physical activity can help seniors maintain their strength, balance, and flexibility, which can reduce the risk of falls and other injuries. In addition to traditional forms of exercise like walking or swimming, seniors can also benefit from low-impact activities like yoga, Tai Chi, or gardening. These activities can be modified to accommodate a range of physical abilities and can provide a variety of physical and mental health benefits. The National Institute on Aging provides resources and information on exercise and physical activity for seniors: https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/exercisephysical-activity. By staying physically active, seniors can maintain their independence and quality of life as they age in place. One of the most important ways that family members and caregivers can help seniors age in place is by providing emotional support and companionship. This can involve spending time with the senior, engaging in social activities, or simply being available to listen and offer support. Therefore, it's also important to plan for the senior's social and emotional needs, as isolation and loneliness can have negative impacts on mental and physical health. This can involve arranging for social activities or transportation, as well as ensuring that the senior has access to medical care and other necessary services. page 37

Family members and caregivers can play an important role in supporting seniors who wish to age in place. This can involve providing emotional support, assistance with household tasks, or coordinating care and services as needed. By working together and developing a comprehensive plan, seniors and their caregivers can ensure a smooth and successful transition into aging in place.

Here are some additional tips and strategies for seniors and caregivers to help plan for aging in place:

Conduct a Home Safety Assessment Seniors and their caregivers should assess the home for potential hazards and make necessary modifications to ensure the senior's safety. This can include installing grab bars in the bathroom, removing tripping hazards, and ensuring that the home is equipped with smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. The National Aging in Place Council provides a helpful checklist for conducting a home safety assessment: https://ageinplace.org/geteducated/home-assessments/.

Plan for Future Mobility Needs As seniors age, their mobility needs may change. It is important to plan for future needs and make modifications to the home to accommodate them. This can include installing wheelchair ramps, widening doorways, and making sure that there are no steps or thresholds that could present a tripping hazard. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) provides tips for modifying the home for aging in place: https://www.aarp.org/homefamily/your-home/info-2021/aging-in-placechecklist.html page 38

Address Social Isolation Seniors who age in place may be at risk of social isolation and loneliness. Family members and caregivers can help by arranging for social activities and transportation, and ensuring that the senior has access to medical care and other necessary services. The National Council on Aging provides resources and support for seniors who may be experiencing social isolation: https://www.ncoa.org/olderadults/health/behavioral-health/isolationloneliness

Plan for Caregiver Support Seniors who age in place may require assistance from caregivers, either family members or hired professionals. It is important to plan for caregiver support and ensure that caregivers have the necessary resources and training to provide quality care. The Family Caregiver Alliance provides resources and support for caregivers: https://www.caregiver.org

Consider Technology Technology can play an important role in helping seniors age in place. From medical alert systems to remote monitoring, there are many tools available that can help seniors stay safe and connected. The National Institute on Aging provides information on technology for aging in place: https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/technologyaging-place-resources.

By following these tips and strategies, seniors and their caregivers can help plan for a successful aging in place experience. It is important to remember that aging in place requires ongoing planning and adjustment to ensure that the senior's needs are being met. By working together and utilizing available resources and support, seniors and their caregivers can make aging in place a fulfilling and rewarding experience.

4 Biophilic Design Strategies for a Healthier & Happier Space

THE HEALTHY HOME Design Corner With Kate Hamblet Balanced Architecture

HEALTHY AND SUSTAINABLE DESIGN TIPS FOR YOUR UPCOMING HOME RENOVATION OR NEW HOME BUILD FROM WELLNESS ARCHITECT KATE HAMBLET page 40

Biophilic design is all about bringing nature into the design of your home to create spaces that support and enhance your well-being. It aims to strengthen the connection between people and nature, promoting a sense of calm, productivity, and overall wellness. There are so many ways to bring nature into your home! Some are very straightforward like bringing in plants and natural objects or bringing in patterns that feel like nature. Others are more obscure like when thinking about prospect and refuge, and fear and awe strategies. If you’re designing an entire home or doing a major renovation, it can feel overwhelming to think through biophilic design strategies for the whole house. So it’s good to focus on one room at a time. And today we’re focusing on biophilic kitchen design strategies! A big component of creating a healthy home is to include a wellness kitchen, and a biophilic kitchen design goes hand in hand with a wellness kitchen. A wellness kitchen is a calm space that invites you in, encourages you to prepare healthy meals, promotes family time, and improves the health of the planet. (Learn more about Wellness Kitchens here.)

Here are 4 biophilic design strategies that will be a perfect accompaniment to your wellness kitchen!

Plants Plants are certainly the most common way to bring nature into your home, and for good reason! They are literally bringing life into your house. But plants can often become overwhelming. So it’s best to start out small and just bring in a few plants. My favorites to have in a kitchen are herbs. They are easy to grow and they provide a constant fresh food source right in your kitchen. I’ve found that having fresh herbs growing in my kitchen encourages me to prepare healthy meals.

page 41

Windows and Natural Light When designing your kitchen, make sure there is natural light. If you have an open-plan layout, you can rely on some shared light from nearby spaces, but you also want to make sure the kitchen has its own window. A window in the kitchen will provide the light needed to grow your herbs, but it also connects you to nature in one of the easiest waysby literally opening up to nature! We can hear the sounds of nature, feel the breeze, and even smell blossoming trees. There’s a biophilic design element called prospect and refuge. Prospect is when we’re able to look out over a large area to observe what’s out there (fundamentally, it was how we hunted and stayed safe), and refuge is the safe zone that we are looking out from. We innately gravitate toward this scenario, and it makes us feel happy and safe. A kitchen window provides that opportunity.

Patterns and Colors Another great design strategy is to incorporate natural patterns and colors. This can include wallpaper or backsplashes that mimic a certain natural geometric design. When choosing a color, use greens and sky blue to help awaken and calm your body. It’s important to integrate natural materials such as wood, cotton, and stone as well. These can be used in seating, counters, and floors. Include organic forms found in nature such as rounded edges on counters instead of rectangular. page 42

Sounds It’s hard to have an inviting kitchen when it’s full of noisy gadgets and appliances. There are a few things you can do to minimize annoying sounds and encourage natural sounds when designing your kitchen. When choosing appliances, make sure to read reviews and look for very quiet ones. Humming refrigerators and noisy dishwashers are irritants that make us want to leave the kitchen. Try swapping out electric gadgets with human-powered ones such as egg beaters and potato mashers. That way conversations don’t need to stop when you have to whip something up! Choose some soft, sound-absorbing finishes within the kitchen. This can be hard because kitchen surfaces need to be easily wiped down, and because of that we usually install very hard materials like tile and stone. But you can balance those surfaces out with things like upholstered cotton seating, cork flooring, and soft wall hangings. These materials will help control the noise that comes with cooking. And lastly, bring in natural sounds! You could do this with a small water feature, some wind chimes, or even by playing nature sounds through your speakers. It’s amazing what a calming effect natural sounds have on us.

Bringing nature into your home has so many health and wellness benefits. And there are endless ways to bring nature in. Think beyond plants, and create a calming, happy kitchen that invites you, your family, and your guests into the heart of your home.
