Congratulations Carman!

The Wellington County Plowmen’s Association is delighted to congratulate our local plowman Carman Weppler on his success at the World Plowing Championships in Denmark. After winning the Senior Conventional Plow class at CanPlow 2014, he and his family travelled across the world this past October to compete alongside the best of the best plowmen in the world.

Carman did an exemplary job and gave his best to make Canada proud!

Thank you Carman, it is great to have an international celebrity in our midst.

President's Message On behalf of the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association, I would like to extend a warm welcome to everyone on this 73rd (approx.) local plowing match, which is held throughout Wellington County.

Dave Rogerson PRESIDENT

This event has been a long tradition in the agricultural community dating back to the 1800’s. Each year we are very fortunate to have land owners make land available for match day and this year is no different. We have a great location; all we need is great weather! The Plowmen’s Association members spend a lot of time planning and preparing for one day of activities. Everyone works with great interest and heart to keep this association going for the future.

This year will mark the 5th International Plowing Match held in Wellington County. The first IPM in our county was held in 1915 at the Ontario Agriculture College in Guelph.

The second we hosted was in 1937 at the Beattie Bros. in Fergus. In 1968 at the JM Gilchrist farm in Guelph hosted the IPM. In 1984 the IPM was held at the JD Ross farm in Teviotdale, and in 2000 at Webfoot Farms in Elora. This year the 2016 host farm is Earl and Ann Schneider in Harriston.

The committee members have been working very hard planning for this large event.

Everyone should try to attend or even volunteer, as it takes a large community of people to deliver an event of this size. An event such as this is; what helps form our history and legacy in Wellington County. Our local match is a stepping stone for the plowmen competing for the 2016 IPM. Try to free up some time for a day of friendly competition, Queen of the Furrow events, fellowship, food, and an agricultural experience that has been going on for over 100 years.

I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all the members, sponsors, and volunteers for their time, contributions, support and dedication. It’s because of you we are able to deliver a large, successful, interesting and fun match for everyone.

The Wellington County Plowmen’s Association has commissioned a 40 pound custom cast brass school bell to commemorate the iPM 2016 anD RuRal eXPo being held in Wellington County.

This bell will be shown throughout the summer at various community events before being used to ring in the IPM on opening day.

Queen of the Furrow I would like to welcome everyone to the 2016 Wellington County Plowing Match! It is hard to believe how quickly this past year has flown by. Representing our County as the 2015-2016 Wellington County Queen of the Furrow has been an incredible experience. Taking on this role has encouraged me to speak up and share my strong passion and love for agriculture with others.

This year has been full of amazing opportunities and looking back on the memories I have made since October, I cannot help but smile! I have met so many wonderful people along the way and have made countless memories that I will cherish forever. I had the privilege of representing Wellington County at a variety of events throughout the year, including the International Plowing Match quilt block judging and the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair. I also took part in the Harriston, Elora, Fergus, and Drayton Santa Claus parades. The Ontario Plowmen’s Association Banquet was definitely a highlight of my year, where I met fellow queens from across the province and built lots of new friendships.

Queen of the Furrow Competition The Wellington County Plowmen’s Association welcomes all enthusiastic young women with an interest in agriculture to enter the Wellington County Queen of the Furrow Competition. This is a great opportunity to gain some valuable interview and public speaking experience.

What iS the Role oF the Wellington County Queen oF the FuRRoW? The Queen of the Furrow represents the Wellington County Plowmen’s Association. The winner will have the opportunity to attend various agricultural functions and community events throughout the year, and most importantly, represent Wellington at the Ontario Queen of the Furrow Competition held in conjunction with the International Plowing Match in 2016.

Who May CoMPete?

The Wellington County Queen of the Furrow Competition is open to young women residing in Wellington County, between the ages of 18 and 25. Those who have competed in the past are welcome to compete again. Must have valid driver’s license. Please visit our website for the full list of rules & regulations.

What aRe the eleMentS oF the CoMPetition?

Plowing 100 points, Interview 250 points, and Speech (2-3 minutes on any topic relating to agriculture) 250 points. The plowing portion of the competition will be held at the Wellington County Plowing Match (contestants must plow at the branch match to continue on in the competition).

The speech and interview will be held at the Plowmen’s Banquet.

What iF you haVe neVeR PloWeD, oR eVen DRiVen a tRaCtoR? No worries. The plowing element of the competition is symbolic of the match but is not essential to success.

A coach will be available to assist the contestants.

Open to girls ages 12 - 16; no entry fee.

REQUIREMENTS: Each girl will give a 1-2 minute speech on any topic related to agriculture, as well as experience an interview with a panel of 3 judges.

Provides confidence needed for future job interviews.

For the first time in our history we are hosting a princess of the furrow competition. We hope to provide an outlet for junior ladies to help promote agriculture, safety, and of course competition plowing! Rules & Regulations 1. Entries will be accepted from 9:00 to 10:00am. Entry to be $10.00. No competitor may be under 10 years of age.

2. Competitors in all tractor classes will be required to make an opening split, except Classes 13A and 13B, 13C & 13D.

4. In Classes 1 to 11, gathering furrows shall be completed by 12:00 p.m., after which time any plow person may proceed in the adjoining land. Completion time is 2:30 p.m.

5. After setting and removing stakes, no assistant or coach will be allowed on the land in any class.

6. No handling will be permitted in any of the tractor classes.

7. The crown shall consist of: a. Single furrow plow --six heavy furrows, then gather six additional furrows, and then commence to cast off; b. In the Tractor classes, the crown shall consist of four rounds for 2-furrow plows, and three rounds for 3 or more furrow plows, after which the contestant shall commence to cast off.

8. The finish shall consist of the last five furrows and the sole furrow.

9. Average depth of furrow shall not be less than 6 inches, unless otherwise specified. Does not apply to Antique class.

10. Completed land will be judged and only consideration given to a plowperson will be where the neighbour’s plowing is crooked or otherwise below standard.

11. The decision of the judge will be final.

12. The Association will not be responsible for prizes unclaimed by December 31, 2016.

13. Lunches will be provided to competitors, judges, and directors. Coaches may purchase lunches.

14. Original stakes on land, if moved, must be replaced and be the centre of the crown. (This rule is strictly enforced.)

15. Judges reserve the right to re-allot prizes.

This must be given to the Secretary at the time of registration.
