Reflecting on Our Journey, Honoring Our Community, and Looking Toward a Brighter Future
Dear Wellfit Girls Community,
As I reflect on the incredible journey of the past 10 years, I am filled with gratitude for all that we have accomplished and overcome I am especially grateful for the community we have built together Your belief in the cause is the driving force for us to make meaningful impact on the lives of over 370 teen girls in SWFL and beyond
Your contributions, whether big or small, have helped shape the growth and success of Wellfit Girls to inspire, challenge and empower teen girls to climb high in all areas of life through transformational leadership programs.
We use the mountain as a metaphor for life. The mountain can be seen as this large, even scary, obstacle to overcome. What the girls learn and realize is that it’s not about getting to the peak, its about the journey you have on the side of the mountain, where you spend the majority of your time and life It’s about being committed to your personal success and the success of the group, doing your share, staying organized and showing up on time, treating everyone with dignity and respect, supporting leadership and growth in everyone, respecting all cultures and backgrounds, being kind and open hearted to yourself and others, admitting and correcting your mistakes, modeling integrity by being honest and accountable, taking a stand for others and being willing to try something new.
Together, we have achieved so much in the past 10 years, including raising over $2 million dollars! As we celebrate this significant milestone, we are very excited for the potential of what the next decade holds in store for us and the girls Thank you for being an integral part of the Wellfit Girls story, and here's to many more years of leadership, growth, empowerment, and positive change

BrookeSpencer Executive Director, Wellfit Girls

The story of Wellfit Girls starts with Jill Wheeler and Colby Robertson, friends and social entrepreneurs, beginning in 2013
Colby was working as a reporter for WINK News searching for local (to Naples) runners who were running in the Boston Marathon when the bomb went off on April 15, 2013 This tragic story led her to meet Jill Wheeler, who crossed the finish line 30 minutes before the bomb occurred. Over the next week, Colby and Jill collaborated on multiple stories related to Jill’s experience in Boston and returning home from the race. In September 2013, Jill reached out to Colby with a story idea involving a program for teen girls called the Wellfit Girls Challenge Colby immediately responded with enthusiasm and committed to supporting Jill with this endeavor.
In January 2014, eleven carefully selected teen girls from Lee and Collier County participated in the first ever Wellfit Girls Challenge This five-month leadership, fitness, and empowerment curriculum was created by Jill Wheeler, Founder and
CEO of Wellfit Institute (now called Jill Wheeler Wellness) Wheeler, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and former Outward Bound instructor, created the program based on her own time in nature and the principles of Adventure Therapy, a type of psychotherapy that emerged in the 1960’s Wheeler had a vision of providing something challenging, a little scary and thought provoking to a community where immersive leadership and outdoor adventure programs didn’t exist

nutrition, leadership and most importantly themselves The girls received expert leadership and personal growth coaching from Jill Wheeler and Debra Frenkel, and personal training sessions with Andrew Miranti Colby Robertson worked behind the scenes to provide marketing, fundraising and administrative support. In partnership with Peaks Foundation and Peru’s Challenge, the Wellfit Girls Challenge concluded with a 10-day, life-changing expedition to Peru Participants engaged in a local community service project in Cusco, a 3-day trek on the Lares trail, and visited Machu Picchu alongside other Peruvian teen girls.
The entire five-month journey and expedition to Peru was filmed and turned into a full-length documentary called Warrior One. The documentary, produced by Jill and directed by Jon Fitzgerald premiered at the Naples International Film Festival in November 2014 From depression and anxiety to self-harm and abuse, body image and poverty, the film touched on several key issues facing our local youth.
Committed to the idea that challenge in nature and healthy peer groups are the greatest influence for building leadership and self-esteem, Jill introduced her concept to the Naples community It was at the film festival that the vision to turn the program into a nonprofit emerged and recruitment for the 2015 program began.
In June 2015, as the second cohort returned from the challenging expedition, Colby opened her email to find the IRS approval letter stating Wellfit Girls Program Southwest Florida, Inc. was approved as an official 501(c)3, tax exempt organization as of February 13, 2015
Over the course of the five month Wellfit Girls Challenge program, the teens met twice weekly in Naples to learn about health, wellness, fitness,
Wellfit Girls ended their first successful (calendar) year with an organizational revenue of $72,870.
During the 2016 Easter holiday weekend, the Wellfit Girls team launched their first annual 5K event. This served as a new mid-program milestone for participants to gauge where they were at physically in preparation for their culminating expedition
Wellfit Girls closely doubled organizational revenue ending their second (calendar) year with $119,673
2017 marked a year of growth and expansion for Wellfit Girls, establishing full and part time staff and successfully launching an expansion of the Wellfit Girls program in Lee County creating a second cohort of participants
As Jill settled into her life now in Boulder, Colorado she wanted to do more with the alumnae who completed the program in prior years Jill launched the first alumnae trip and hosted it in Boulder, Colorado. Alumnae engaged in leadership discussion, yoga, and rock-climbing activities that May 2018.
In early 2019, the Board of Directors met to approve a new program, a middle school summer camp culminating with a 5-day hiking expedition in Georgia.
Another major shift the Board made was to domesticate expeditions, making the 2019 expedition to Peru, the last international trip. This decision was made with the intention of significantly lowering costs and reaching more girls in the community Wellfit Girls entered this program phase with a name change to the signature 5-month program for high school girls now called “Summit Sisters” and the new summer camp for middle school girls became “Wellfit Adventure Camp ”
2020 marked a unique year of pivoting and adaptation. In January 2020, Wellfit Girls started the 5month journey with 20 participants
for the Summit Sisters program in both Lee and Collier Counties As directed from the Board, we allowed girls to return from prior years to continue with the progression of their leadership development. Leadership sessions were held at the newly established office and programming space acquired in October 2019 in Naples, FL. Since girls were now allowed to return and build upon their leadership skills, we established Mentors in Action, an opportunity for girls to become peer mentors and put their leadership into action.
March 2020 is a time we will all remember forever changing the world through the global COVID-19 pandemic
Wellfit Girls immediately shifted programming to a virtual experience. Leadership and fitness sessions were both held via Zoom from the comfort and safety of everyone ’ s home The staff and leadership team worked overtime to provide services to participants and families as well as reconnect with all prior alumnae. Summit Sisters culminated with a 7-day virtual expedition experience and 36-hour in person solo in Labelle, FL The solo experience proved overwhelmingly impactful for the girls. They shared that the disconnection from technology allowed them to process some really deep rooted challenges and traumas and have the space to release them.
In June 2021, Wellfit Girls successfully completed the first Summit Sisters domestic expedition in partnership with Montana Wilderness School in Bozeman, MT As in any growing organization, Wellfit Girls underwent transitions of growth, change and challenge over the next few years managing the aftermath of the multi-year COVID pandemic while continuing to provide consistent inspiring, challenging and empowering Summit Sisters and Wellfit Adventure Camp programs.
Now, in 2024 Wellfit Girls celebrates it’s 10th anniversary having served over 370 girls, completed 17 backcountry expeditions, 6 of which were international, and reaching a milestone of over $2 million raised over the 10 years

Through this journey, the girls are inspired to discover their potential as strong, empowered leaders at home, school and in their communities

Inspire, challenge and empower teen girls to climb high in all areas of life through transformational leadership programs.
The vision of Wellfit Girls is that all teen girls believe they can overcome challenges, do hard things, and change the world.

This final expedition is designed to be a culmination of physical, mental and emotional challenges that transform the way girls see themselves Girls are able to reflect on how far they have come and understand just how much they are capable of

We believe every girl has the ability to climb high in all areas of life
Girls are capable of rising to any occasion
and overcoming any obstacle.
At Wellfit Girls, we are committed to showing teen girls that limitless confidence exists beyond their comfort zones Using mountains as a metaphor, the Wellfit journey prepares them with the tools to overcome life’s inevitable challenges We support all girls with embarking on new adventures, encountering challenging obstacles, gaining new skills, and realizing they are capable of more than they ever thought they were Our hope is that every girl walks away from the final expedition feeling empowered with a new sense of self-assurance and confidence, ready to take on whatever mountains they face in life.

build positive relationships with youth; provide fitness and leadership training to expand their confidence; offer cultural immersion, outdoor adventure and experiential learning opportunities to broaden interpersonal skills; raise aspirations and prepare them mentally, physically and emotionally to overcome past, present and future obstacles,

Teen girls are faced with unprecedented levels of social pressures, stress, anxiety and depression, all of which impact their ability to realize their full potential.
This generation is the most connected in the history of the human population through digital media and online platforms, yet also the most isolated, contributing to risk factors such as depression, self-harm, substance abuse, and suicide. Our intention is to lower the ever growing statistics plaguing our teen girls lives. We encourage real-time connection and offer mindful ways to manage these daily pressures and mental health challenges.
they experience increased empowerment and selfacceptance; physical fitness and holistic wellbeing; courage and resiliency; gratitude, empathy and compassion; optimism and connectedness,
empowered leaders who have unlimited possibility and a belief they can BE anything they want (brave, hardworking, generous, hopeful, free, curious and happy); thereby creating selfreliant adults committed to healthy lifestyles, global awareness and positive social change.

According to the Heart of Leadership, 1 in 4 girls struggle with depression, eating disorders, and other mental or emotional challenges. Low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety are prevalent among high school girls, affecting their ability to reach their full potential.
61% 61%
According to the American Psychological Association (APA), about 61% of teens report feeling stressed about their school responsibilities, with girls often experiencing higher levels of stress than boys.
A study by the Dove Self-Esteem Project found that 8 out of 10 girls (80%) opt out of important life activities, such as sports or social events, due to low self-esteem
80% 80% 40% 40%
119% 9% 57% 57%
The CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that nearly 57% of teen girls reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness in 2021
Research conducted by the Royal Society for Public Health found that social media platforms are linked to negative body image and eating disorders among young people, with 40% of teen girls expressing concern about how social media affects their body image.
The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS) reported that roughly 19% of high school girls seriously considered attempting suicide, and about 9% made a suicide attempt in the past year.
According to NIMH, girls with mental health disorders are at a higher risk for substance use disorders. Their research has shown that girls who experience mental health issues, such as anxiety or depression, are more likely to engage in substance use as a form of coping.
These statistics underscore the widespread and significant impact of mental health issues among teen girls, highlighting the importance of addressing these challenges early and effectively.

Despite being connected more now than ever before, teen girls are facing unprecedented feelings of isolation and rising levels of stress, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and suicide let alone the immense social pressures related to body image and peer influence These pressures significantly impact their decision-making, self-esteem, relationships, and willingness to take on leadership roles or engage in their communities

leadership, fitness and outdoor adventure programs rooted in experiential learning, adventure therapy and interpersonal relationship coaching.
Leadership is the ability to guide, influence, and inspire individuals or groups toward achieving a common goal or vision It encompasses a range of qualities, skills, and behaviors that enable a person to effectively direct and motivate others.
Leadership styles can vary widely from transformational and servant leadership to authoritarian and transactional approaches, each having its own strengths and applications. We explore leadership styles with our participants, allowing them to further discover their identity and experience each type of leadership style Effective leadership is crucial for the success of our participants lives, including the impact on their families and communities.
Adventure therapy is a therapeutic approach that utilizes outdoor and adventure-based activities to promote personal growth, healing, and mental well-being It combines elements of traditional therapy with outdoor experiences, allowing participants to engage in physically challenging activities while working on emotional, psychological, or social issues
The intention of adventure therapy is to leverage the power of adventure and nature to inspire positive change, enhance mental health, and facilitate personal growth in a supportive and engaging environment
Outdoor adventure refers to activities taking place in natural environments outside of traditional indoor settings These activities, such as the Wellfit Girls annual 5K and the program hiking expeditions, involve physical challenges and exploration of the great outdoors, allowing participants to connect with nature, and most importantly themselves Outdoor adventures can vary widely in terms of intensity, duration, and type, but in Wellfit Girls programs they include outdoor leadership activities, fitness, hiking, camping, and survival skills training
Outdoor adventure not only promotes physical fitness and wellbeing but also fosters teamwork, self-confidence, and resilience. Engaging in these types of activities can lead to personal growth, enhanced social skills, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Experiential learning is an educational approach that emphasizes learning through experience It involves engaging participants in hands-on activities and real-world experiences, allowing them to actively reflect on and apply what they have learned in practical contexts. Experiential learning is designed to create memorable, impactful learning opportunities that encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and personal growth.
“Fear,uncertainty anddiscomfortare youraccomplices towardsgrowth.”
- JOSEPH CAMPBELL

Through our adventure-based challenges, girls face and overcome obstacles, learning to see challenges as opportunities for growth rather than setbacks.
This process builds their resilience, confidence, and problem-solving abilities, empowering them to tackle life's difficulties with a positive mindset
Our holistic approach to well-being emphasizes fitness activities such as running, stretching, and strength training
These activities boost serotonin levels, release endorphins, reduce stress hormones, and improve sleep
Girls learn the importance of maintaining physical health as a foundation for mental and emotional well-being, which helps combat anxiety and depression.
Early interventions in health, fitness, and nutrition through our programs lay the groundwork for lifelong healthy behaviors and improved mental wellness. We focus on body positivity and self-love, encouraging each girl to appreciate her unique and authentic self.
We cultivate a sense of belonging and inclusion, offering a supportive community where girls can form meaningful, realtime connections.
By fostering a supportive environment, we help girls develop a healthy body image and self-esteem, reducing the impact of societal pressures on their mental health

Our programs encourage girls to step out of their comfort zones, develop their voices, and take on leadership roles By practicing these skills in a supportive environment, girls become more confident in their abilities to lead and make positive contributions to their communities.
Wellfit Girls empowers teen girls to overcome societal pressures, build resilience, and develop into confident, healthy, and capable leaders Through our comprehensive approach, we address the root causes of mental and physical health challenges, ensuring that our participants can reach their full potential and lead fulfilling, empowered lives.

“Wellfit girls provided me with the tools to set and achieve realistic goals. It helped me understand that I am capable of doing things that are hard and uncomfortable and new Today, I’m working toward my Bachelor’s in Social Work at FGCU and expect to graduate in 2026, with plans to pursue my MSW right after I’m currently a Behavioral Health Technician at the David Lawrence Center and a research assistant at Project Help. Wellfit Girls played a huge role in shaping the path I’m on now, and it taught me that I have a responsibility to make a difference in my own small way ”
“I really struggled with the first couple of days of the expedition It was a real challenge for me and I’ll never forget breaking down in tears, feeling like I just couldn’t do it anymore I shared that with the program facilitators and I’ll never forget what they told me: it wasn’t that I couldn’t climb the mountain; It was my limiting mindset and self-doubt that was holding me back I can’t really explain how that shifted something inside of me but I felt determined to finish the expedition and I did! I’m so proud of myself for climbing that mountain. Even now, it serves as a constant reminder of what I am capable of, even when things feel impossible ” “Today, I’m studying at Florida State University, and I’ve set a personal goal to work on self-love and worth, something I wouldn’t have thought about a few years ago Wellfit Girls has been life-changing, and I’m forever grateful for the impact it’s had on me ”

“Wellfit Girls enabled me to look deeper and acknowledge the parts of myself that I was insecure about It taught me to value both my strengths and my weaknesses and to pursue my goals with a sense of purpose and courage Today, I’m continuing my education at the University of South Florida St. Petersburg while working as a yoga teacher at Sunstate Yoga and on campus. I’m also grateful to still be involved with Wellfit Girls, serving as part of the marketing team and mentoring others, which brings my journey full circle ”
SUMMIT SISTERS 2014
“Before joining Wellfit Girls, I had a hard time pushing myself and didn’t really believe in what I could achieve Physical challenges felt overwhelming, and I wasn’t sure how to face obstacles on my own. But through the program, and with the constant support of the other girls and mentors, I learned to trust in my own strength and resilience Now, I’m passionate about fitness, I prioritize taking care of myself, and I feel more confident tackling challenges If I could overcome what once seemed impossible, I know I can handle anything that comes my way. After high school, I went on to study at Florida Southwestern State College, where I’m still working toward my degree. I’m proud of how far I’ve come, and I know that my time with Wellfit Girls played a huge role in helping me get here ”

“Wellfit Girls has truly changed my perspective I've learned that setbacks are part of life, and I have a support system that encourages me not to give up Before the program, I had a lot of nerves and didn’t feel great about myself, but the group talks really helped me see I wasn’t alone. One of my favorite memories was staying up late with my cabin friends during the expedition laughing & singing it felt like a family I’m super proud of myself for finishing an 11mile hike. Reaching the top of the mountain during that hike was a significant moment for me, especially when we exchanged a dirty rock for a piece of gold a keepsake I still treasure along with my affirmation rope Wellfit Girls gave me the confidence to believe in myself and showed me that it’s okay to ask for help. Right now, I work at Designer Divas and plan to graduate high school in 2027 ”
The best part of Wellfit Adventure Camp is the warm, safe, welcoming and accepting environment it creates for all of the girls [My daughter] feels heard, loved and appreciated for who she is Most importantly, she feels absolutely no pressure to try fit in or to change who she is This summer marked my daughter’s third time participating in Wellfit Adventure Camp! Thank You Martha Meyers + Bill Meyers (in memorium)!
In honor of the beautiful life of Bill Meyers, a scholarship fund was created as one of Bill’s last wishes before he passed in 2023. This scholarship is funded by generous contributions of Bill’s family and friends Bill was the famed chef of the annual fundraiser he and Martha hosted at their home for nearly a decade, which they lovingly named the “Souper Bowl”. This event has raised over $100,000 over the past 8 years for Wellfit Girls. Bill was family to many, including husband to Wellfit Girls matriarch Martha and stepfather to our Co-Founder Colby Robertson We will forever remember and honor Bill and his legacy for giving.
