E questo, nel nostro piccolo, vogliamo fare attraverso le parole e le immagini del nostro magazine, anno dopo anno. Raccontare le grandi vigne e i personaggi che fanno vivere i Cru. Nel nostro numero “zero” – uscito in questo 2022 di ripartenza – cominciamo il racconto dai due nuovi Cru di Michele Chiarlo, Montemareto e Fornaci, rispettivamente da vigne storiche di Nizza Monferrato e Gavi.

All’interno delle pagine di C.R.U troverete tanto Barolo, specialmente tanto Cerequio. Un’intervista con il “regista” dell’operazione «Cerequio, primo Barolo sulla Place de Bordeaux».

Si continua poi con l’intervista a Stefano Chiarlo, presidente dell’Associazione Produttori del Nizza, che porta l’attenzione sulla più recente denominazione del Monferrato, il Nizza Docg. Chiarlo ci parla del futuro della denominazione e della sua «forza di territorio», dimostrando come il successo di un vino è inestricabilmente legato alla identità territoriale.

Infine, quasi come fosse un vero e proprio Manifesto di C.R.U, l’approfondimento con Masnaghetti, «l’uomo delle mappe», il cartografo ufficiale dell’arcipelago dei Cru, prima in Piemonte, poi in Italia e nel resto del mondo. C.R.U: Custodi di Radici & Umanità. The crus are the living memory of the terroir and the people – the winemakers – who have made them extraordinary. This is what we aim to achieve with our magazine: to share the stories and images of the vineyards and the people who bring the crus to life, year after year. For our first edition – to be released this 2022 – we start by telling you the story of two new Michele Chiarlo crus: Montemareto and Fornaci, historic vineyards in Nizza Monferrato and Gavi respectively.

Among the pages of C.R.U you will also find a lot about Barolo, especially Cerequio. We have interviewed the “director” behind «Cerequio, the first Barolo at La Place de Bordeaux». There is also an article about the tasting experiences of outstanding crus at Palás Cerequio: every day, visitors can have a taste of excellent labels from Langa. We will also tell you about chef Damiano Nigro who brought a Michelin star at Palás Cerequio, Michele Chiarlo’s resort and the

«Temple of Barolo». When it comes to crus, we should also refl ect on the relationship that exists between wine and art. We will introduce you to Giancarlo Ferraris, the master behind our splendid labels: we will talk about his thirty-year experience, his book and the art park. There is also an interview with Stefano Chiarlo, president of the Associazione Produttori del Nizza, who focuses on Monferrato’s latest denomination: Nizza DOCG. Chiarlo talks about the future of the denomination and the «strength of the territory», explaining how a wine’s success is inextricably connected to the identity of a territory.

And just like a true C.R.U Manifesto, we also have «the map man», Alessandro Masnaghetti: the official cru cartographer who started mapping Piedmont and the Italian peninsula, eventually getting to the rest of the world. Like any ambitious – or unrealistic – magazine, we want to end with a “profane” strip: Captain Cru, the outspoken guardian of good food and wine.

Montemareto

il sorprendente Nizza in botte grande

Celebre per la sua attitudine a produrre vini di straordinaria qualità, la collina di Montemareto sorge nel comune di Castelnuovo Calcea, non distante dagli appezzamenti di La Court, in direzione di Mombercelli. Un crinale maestoso, che supera i 300 metri di altitudine, estremamente ripido, con una fantastica esposizione Sudest-Sudovest in grado di catturare il sole dalla mattina alla sera e garantire alle uve un elevato numero di ore di luce.

I filari di barbera poggiano su suoli composti da marne di Sant’Agata alternate a strati di Sabbie Astiane dal colore chiaro e la presenza di microelementi, in particolare magnesio e calcio. Montemareto è una vigna esemplare per il Nizza, che qui acquista una struttura importante, pur conservando notevoli tracce di freschezza.

Le rese molto basse e gli importanti diradamenti consentono di raccogliere solo cinque, sei grappoli per pianta, vinificati alla ricerca di un carattere che privilegia la ricchezza della struttura supportata da una robusta spina dorsale di acidità, tipica del vitigno barbera. Un’acidità che, in bocca, rivela l’integrità varietale e la piacevolezza della beva, rendendo il Nizza Montemareto un sorso complesso eppure piacevole, con una grande propensione all’abbinamento.

In cantina, Michele Chiarlo ha scelto un delicato affinamento tradizionale. Un anno in botte grande per preservare la fedeltà al vitigno d’origine, che si esprime in noti di frutti scuri e una ricchezza olfattiva che prelude a una importante longevità. Un Nizza di grande lunghezza e squillante freschezza.

Montemareto: a surprising Nizza within a large barrel Known for its extraordinary and high-quality wines, the hill of Montemareto is situated in Castelnuovo Calcea, not far from the plots of La Court, towards Mombercelli. This majestic and steep ridge exceeds 300 meters of altitude and enjoys a southeast-southwest exposure: the sun shines on Montemareto from dusk to dawn, allowing the grapes to bask in the sun for a long period of time.

The rows of Barbera rest on soils composed of Sant’Agata Fossili Marls that alternate with light-colored Asti Sands that are rich in microelements, particularly magnesium and calcium.

Montemareto is an ideal Nizza vineyard, producing wines cha-

racterized by an important structure and distinct freshness.

Very low yield and extensive thinning allow to only harvest five to six bunches per plant. Vinification seeks to bring out a well-structured and typically acidic wine. The acidity reveals varietal integrity and a pleasant sip, making Nizza Montemareto a complex yet enjoyable drink that ideally pairs with a variety of dishes.

Michele Chiarlo has chosen to follow a delicate traditional refinement: the wine ages for a year in large barrels to preserve the variety of origin. Notes of dark fruit and a rich aromatic profile anticipate a long-lived, persistent and intensely fresh wine.

The hillside of Montemareto has an extreme slop, in antique times famous for its ability to produce wines of extraordinary quality. Today, it is a majestic hill with vineyards which were planted in 2000 at a density of over 5,500 plants per hectare.

L’esposizione è fantastica in quanto tutto il vigneto è esposto a sud e vista la conformazione collinare consente di avere durante il periodo estivo ed autunnale un incredibile numero di ore di luce.

The exposure is fantastic as the entire vineyard faces south and in view of the hilly topography, it allows an incredible number of daylight hours during summer and autumn.

1988, la prima annata

Alcuni vini fanno parlare di sé anche quando non sono prodotti. È il caso del Gavi Fornaci, la cui pima annata risale al 1988 e l’ultima al 2012 – almeno finora. Un Gavi che ha assunto i caratteri del mito quando, nel 1998, il Gambero Rosso decise di assegnargli i Tre Bicchieri: il primo Gavi della storia a meritare il riconoscimento. Il premio, però, non fu attribuito all’ultima annata disponibile, bensì a quella degli esordi, il 1988. Fu creata un’apposta rubrica, «I tre bicchieri mai dati», che dieci anni più tardi rendeva giustizia a una bottiglia reputata straordinaria.

Some wines are talked about even when they are not made anymore. This is the case of Gavi Fornaci, which was produced from 1988 until 2012 – at least so far. This legendary Gavi obtained Gambero Rosso’s coveted Tre Bicchieri award in 1998: the first of its kind to deserve such recognition. Yet, the prize was not won by the latest vintage available, but by the one produced in 1988. A special feature entitled «I tre bicchieri mai dati» (lit. “The Unawarded Tre Bicchieri”) was written to give justice to an extraordinary label that was belatedly acknowledged as such.

Nasce dunque sotto il segno di una marcata unicità il Gavi Fornaci che oggi Chiarlo, con l’annata 2019, riporta ai suoi antichi splendori. Un Gavi fortemente richiesto dagli amici e poi dai clienti della cantina di Calamandrana, memori di un sorso che colpiva per la sua atipicità e, soprattutto, per la capacità di evoluzione.

Fornaci è un single vineyard da uve cortese in purezza colti-

vate in una delle più storiche e vocate zone della denominazione Gavi. Un bellissimo crinale che dalla frazione Rovereto, sotto il comune di Gavi, prosegue verso Tassarolo. I filari poggiando su terreni di marna scura, con presenza di ferro e ciottoli, felicemente esposti a Sudest. Il clone utilizzato per il vigneto è anch’esso particolare, un piede franco pre-fillossera che Chiarlo ha

riprodotto da selezioni massali risalenti agli anni ’10 del Novecento.

Tutto, a Fornaci ci parla di un Gavi pronto alla longevità. In vigna si agisce selettivamente, con diradamenti esasperati, per portare in vigna solo il frutto migliore. Un processo qualitativo che prosegue in cantina con un affinamento di tre anni, davvero inusuale per un bianco piemontese, parte

in acciaio e parte in legno di rovere francese. È così che nasce uno dei Gavi più atipici della denominazione. In bocca sprigiona sentori di che spaziano dal miele d’acacia agli agrumi, sfumature di frutta candita e fiori bianchi.

Il tutto compresente ad una mineralità elegantissima, che termina con una sorprendente, eppure sempre equilibrata, sapidità.

Una Gavi raro, unico, impareggiabile, capace di resistere al tempo e, proprio nel tempo, trovare la sua evoluzione perfetta.

Michele Chiarlo brings back a truly unique Gavi Fornaci with the 2019 vintage. The wine was highly demanded by friends and clients thanks to its peculiar sip and its extraordinary evolution.

Fornaci is a single vineyard wine made from 100% Cortese grapes grown in one of the most historic and suitable areas of the Gavi denomination: a majestic ridge that rises from the

hamlet of Rovereto, situated in the town of Gavi, and continues towards Tassarolo. The rows grow on soils made up of pebbly dark marl that is rich in iron and enjoy a southeastern exposure. The clone planted is also a unique one: an ungrafted pre-phylloxera clone that Chiarlo reproduced from mass selections from the early 20th century.

A rare, unique and incomparable Gavi that can with stand time to find its perfect evolution.

Everything in Fornaci points to a Gavi destined for longevity.

Attentive selection and intensive thinning are performed in the vineyard in order to obtain excellent fruit and ensure quality. The process continues in the cellar: the wine ages partly in stainless steel and partly in French oak barrels for three years, an unusual duration for a Piedmontese white wine.

This is how one of the most peculiar Gavi wines of the denomination comes to life. The mouth unveils hints of acacia honey and citrus, as well as notes of candied fruit and white flowers. The wine reveals a highly elegant mineral note that finishes with a surprising, yet always balanced, flavor.

Classe 1973, brindisino. Un’infanzia tra i pomodori e gli uliveti della masseria di famiglia, dove ha imparato a fare il ragù dalle donne di casa. Poi la gavetta nelle cucine di mezzo mondo, da Gualtiero Marchesi ad Alain Ducasse, da lavapiatti a sous chef di Enrico Crippa. Appassionato di Vivaldi e kickboxing. È il poliedrico profilo di Damiano Nigro, alla guida delle cucine di Palás Cerequio, il resort che Michele Chiarlo ha recuperato dall’antica frazione di Cerequio, immersa fra i vigneti dell’omonimo cru di La Morra, nelle Langhe.

Nigro, recentemente insignito della stella Michelin, gestirà il ristorante assieme alla compagna Elena Boffa e al secondo Marco Angeloni, propo-

nendo una cucina «evolutiva», come la chiama lui.

Un modo di fare le cose lontano dagli eccessi sperimentali degli chef «da televisione», a favore di un gusto che, pur nella contemporaneità della ricetta, rispetta nel profondo la semplicità dei tre pilastri a cui lui non rinuncerebbe mai: qualità delle materie prime, stagionalità e lotta allo spreco.

Born in 1973 and hailing from Brindisi, Damiano Nigro grew among tomatoes and olive groves in the family farm, where he learned how to make ragù from the women of his household. He worked his way up in different kitchens all around the world, from Gualtiero Marchesi to Alain Ducasse. Damiano started as a dishwasher and then worked as a sous chef for Enrico Crippa. He is also a Vivaldi enthusiast and a kickboxing aficionado.

These are the many faces of Damiano Nigro, who is heading the kitchens of Palás Cerequio.

Michele Chiarlo restored this resort located in the ancient hamlet of Cerequio, immersed among vineyards growing in the homonymous cru in La Morra, in the Langhe.

Nigro, who gained a Michelin star at Villa d’Amelia, has amazed food critics once again. In autumn 2021, he gained a Michelin star for Palás, which he manages together with his

partner Elena Boffa and Marco Angeloni, his sous chef. Together, they offer what Nigro calls an «evolutionary» cuisine: one that is a far cry from the excessive experimentation by «television» chefs. Instead, it focuses on a type of flavor produced by contemporary recipes that still respect the three pillars he would never do without: high-quality ingredients, seasonality and avoiding waste.

Damiano, why do you define your cuisine as «evolutionary»?

Perché è una cucina capace di cambiare, ma in maniera lenta e costante, secondo i gusti e le esigenze contemporanee, senza strappi o forzature, senza metamorfosi improvvise.

Because it is capable of changing in a slow and steady manner, considering contemporary tastes and necessities. It does not strain or force anything, nor does it come with unexpected changes.

Ci fai un esempio?

Can you give us an example?

Il ragù l’ho imparato a fare dalla mamma e dalla nonna, quando abitavo nella masseria di famiglia, a Brindisi. Loro mettevano tutto insieme: carne, verdure, i pomodori appena colti. Una cottura lenta amalgamava gli ingredienti, compreso il grasso della carna che forniva l’energia di cui gli uomini avevano bisogno per lavorare in campagna. Ora che non zappiamo più la terra, quel grasso non è più necessario.

Uso la stessa ricetta della nonna, ma faccio scolare il grasso della carne per un ragù più leggero e digeribile. Le ricette cambiano, il gusto invece continua ad accompagnarti per tutta la vita. È questo il mio concetto di cucina in «evoluzione».

I learned how to make ragù from my mother and grandmother when I lived in the family farm in Brindisi. They would put everything together: meat, vegetables, freshly picked tomatoes. Their slow cooking blended the ingredients together, including the meat fat which provided men with the energy they needed to work the land.

Now that we no longer till the earth, that fat is not needed anymore.

I still use my grandmother’s recipe, but I drain the fat to make a lighter sauce that is easier to digest. Recipes change, but the flavors remain the same: this is my idea of «evolutionary» cuisine.

I gusti della tua infanzia ritornano nelle tue proposte?

Always, and they are the foundations of my cuisine. Life in the countryside has taught me to follow the seasonality of products and avoid wasting resources. Cooking must respect what nature offers at a given moment because seasonal produce are the best ingredients.

Just like for wine: high quality is obtained with perfectly ripe grapes.

Sempre. E sono alla base della mia cucina. La vita in campagna mi ha insegnato a seguire la stagionalità dei prodotti e la lotta allo spreco. La cucina rispetta ciò che la natura offre in un determinato momento perché i frutti di stagione sono all’apice della loro espressione. Come accade per il vino, la cui qualità è direttamente proporzionale alla perfetta maturazione delle uve.

Che cos’è, per te, il gusto? È il nucleo originario da cui nascono tutte le ricette. Il gusto è qualcosa che si forma con la crescita e si modifica in base alle esperienze personali, di cui l’infanzia è la principale. Il gusto non si codifica, non è neppure esprimibile: è l’anima dello chef sulla quale si sono incise le sue “avventure” gastronomiche, il suo sviluppo umano e professionale.

Tra le tue passioni ci sono anche la musica e lo sport.

Amo la musica classica: Paganini, Vivaldi, Ponchielli, Mascagni. Il mio è un ascolto privatissimo, alla mattina presto, lontano da tutti. E adoro lo sport: judo, kickboxing, nuoto, corsa. Lo sport è una forma di “ascetismo”: lo uso per isolarmi dal mondo e concentrarmi solo ed esclusivamente sulla pratica. La combinazione di musica e sport, nel caso della corsa con le cuffiette, è per me l’idea stessa della perfezione, almeno per un momento.

What does flavor mean to you?

It is the heart of all recipes. Something that grows with time and changes according to one’s personal experiences, childhood being the most important one. Flavor cannot be codified, nor can it be put down in words: it is the very soul of the chef, engraved with his gastronomic “adventures”, his growth as a person and in his field of work.

Music and sports are some of your passions. What do you like most about them?

I love classical music: Paganini, Vivaldi, Ponchielli, Mascagni. But I am a very private listener: I listen to music early in the morning, away from everybody else. I also love sports: judo, kickboxing, swimming, running. I see it as a form of “ascetism”: I isolate myself from the outside world and completely focus on practicing it. Combining music and sports – for example, running with earphones on – is my idea of perfection, at least for a moment.

Che cosa ti aspetti dalla nuova collaborazione con Michele Chiarlo?

What do you expect from this new collaboration with Michele Chiarlo?

La gestione diretta della cucina mi garantisce una grande libertà espressiva, che voglio però dosare con cautela. Stiamo studiando un menù “intenso” piuttosto che “lungo”: pochi piatti eseguiti in maniera magistrale. Un’offerta che rispetta il mio gusto personale e la tradizione delle Langhe, cercando di amplificare i sapori locali, non di stravolgerli. Sono felice della vicinanza e dello scambio d’idee con la famiglia Chiarlo, che legherà la mia cucina ancora di più al territorio. Il sogno condiviso è quello di creare un luogo accogliente, dove sentirsi davvero a casa, coccolati dalle mani di professionisti dell’ospitalità, della gastronomia e del grande vino piemontese.

Directly handling the kitchen grants me great freedom of expression, but I want to use it cautiously. We are studying a menu that is “intense” but not “long”, only including a few dishes that will be masterfully created. It will reflect my personal taste and the Langhe tradition, intensifying local flavors without misinterpreting them. I am happy to be working closely and sharing ideas with the Chiarlo family, which will bind my dishes even closer to the territory. Our dream is to create a welcoming place where guests can truly feel at home, pampered by high-quality hospitality, food and Piedmontese wines.

Ci sono progetti in cantiere?

Tra i nuovi progetti del Palás, il 2022 vede la creazione di una nuova sala ristorante pied dans le vignes con cui verrà potenziato, a partire dall’estate, l’esperienza immersiva nei vigneti del Barolo.

Una delle sale interne, invece, sarà destinata ai cru del Barolo.

Sulla parete verranno esposte oltre 400 etichette provenienti dai principali vigneti e produttori della denominazione. Sarà uno spettacolo da vedere e da gustare. Michele Chiarlo ha concepito Palás Cerequio come un vero e proprio “tempio del Barolo”: nel caveau sotterraneo sono conservate migliaia di bottiglie in diversi formati, di annate che risalgono fino agli anni ’50. Un archivio di etichette che può sempre essere apprezzato attraverso degustazioni personalizzate ed esclusive, guidate dal sommelier Roberto Stroppiana.

Are there upcoming projects?

In 2022, the restaurant will open a new area where guests can “put their feet among the rows”: this will certainly boost the immersive experience of being surrounded by the Barolo vineyards. One of the rooms at the restaurant will be used for Barolo crus. Over 400 labels from the most important vineyards and producers of the denomination will be displayed on one wall: a sight to behold and enjoy. Michele Chiarlo designed Palás Cerequio as a real “temple of Barolo”: the underground Caveau houses thousands of bottles in different sizes, with vintages dating back to the 1950s. A collection of labels to wonder at through custom and exclusive tastings, led by sommelier Roberto Stroppiana.

La best of del 2021 comprende le etichette più iconiche, quelle che hanno ottenuti i punteggi migliori.

2021: a year of fulfillment The past year has been greatly satisfying for Michele Chiarlo. The winery from Calamandrana has obtained excellent scores from both national and international critics. The best of 2021 includes the winery’s most iconic labels which have garnered important recognition.

The scores obtained are not lower than 90/100, a feat that reflects Michele Chiarlo’s commitment to enhancing a rich wine heritage consisting of marvelous vineyards that are the foundation of a winemaking process based on the philosophy: «EXPERIENCE THE BEST CRU IN PIEMONTE».

Dall’incontro con Michele Chiarlo, avvenuto negli anni ’80 durante una mostra, Giancarlo Ferraris non ha più smesso di illustrare il vino. Lo ha fatto a fianco di Michele e dei figli Alberto e Stefano Chiarlo, inaugurando una sorta di simbiosi tra enologia e pittura che, come lui stesso ammette, è una «maratona di idee in cui non si sa più più dove inizia il produttore di vino e finisce l’artista».

Classe 1950, Ferraris è pittore, illustratore, grafico e incisore. Molto legato al territorio astigiano, da 40 anni realizza le etichette per Michele Chiarlo «che ho plasmato con le mie opere e dal quale sono stato riplasmato», ammette. Sue sono, soltanto per fare qualche esempio, le illustrazioni che vestono il Barolo Cerequio, il Barolo

Cannubi, il Barbaresco Asili e il Nizza Riserva La Court che, nel 2000, vinse il premio internazionale Etichetta dell’anno.

Suo è il cielo blu del Nizza Cipressi, diventato un’icona stilistica ed enologica di Michele Chiarlo. Ma Giancarlo Ferraris è anche il direttore che diede vita all’Art Park La Court. Fu lui a chiamare a raccolta Emanuele Luzzati, Balthasar Brennenstuhl, Marcello Mannuzza, Fabio Albino Cavanna, Peppino Campanella, Dedo Roggero Fossati e, più recentemente, Ugo Nespolo e Chris Bangle.

Raccolse e coordinò il loro lavoro in una sorta di «Factory warholiana» dove arte e artigianato si fondevano per dar vita al primo museo a cielo aperto fra i vigneti del Monferrato.

Since meeting Michele Chiarlo at an exhibition in the 1980s, Giancarlo Ferraris has never stopped depicting wine. He did so alongside Michele and his sons Alberto and Stefano Chiarlo, establishing a symbiotic relationship between wine and art. One that he refers to as a «stream of ideas in which it is hard to identify where the artist ends, and the winemaker begins».

Born in 1950, Ferraris is a painter, an illustrator, a graphic artist and an engraver. He has a close bond with the territory of Asti and has been making labels for Michele Chiarlo for 40 years. «I have shaped him with my work, and, in turn, he also shaped me» says Giancarlo. He designed the labels for Barolo Cerequio, Barolo

Cannubi, Barbaresco Asili and Nizza Riserva La Court, which won the international award “Label of the Year” in 2000.

He is the artist behind the blue label of Nizza Cipressi, a true iconic Michele Chiarlo wine.

Giancarlo Ferraris is also the artistic director behind Art Park La Court. He called on Emanuele Luzzati, Balthasar Brennenstuhl, Marcello Mannuzza, Fabio Albino Cavanna, Peppino Campanella, Dedo Roggero Fossati, Ugo Nespolo and Chris Bangle. He collected and coordinated their work in a «Warholian Factory» where art and craftsmanship merged to create the first open-air museum among the vineyards of Monferrato.

Ferraris, come avvenne l’incontro con Michele Chiarlo?

Che tipo di etichette si realizzavano allora?

Erano i primi anni ’80. Michele venne a una mia mostra e mi volle incontrare. Io allora ero un pittore esordiente, realizzavo acquerelli in grande formato. Insegnavo arte pittorica al Liceo Artistico di Torino, dove vivevo. Scoprimmo di essere conterranei, io di Canelli lui di Calamandrana. Mi propose, da subito, di realizzare le etichette per i suoi vini. Mi colpirono la sua apertura mentale, frutto dei viaggi all’estero, e il coraggio dell’innovazione. Voleva cambiare drasticamente il modo di illustrare il vino, lasciandosi alle spalle la tradizione.

Erano etichette senza anima.

Tutte uguali. Carta gialla o bianco sporco con il nome del vino scritto in caratteri gotici o corsivi. Capeggiate dallo stemma di famiglia, erano incorniciate da bordini verde fango. Michele voleva qualcosa di più identitario, colorato, aggressivo. Qualcosa in cui si rispecchiasse la qualità del vino, ma anche la sua personalità. L’etichetta doveva essere un piacere da bere e da osservare. Voleva essere orgoglioso delle sue bottiglie anche sotto l’aspetto scenografico. Fui colpito dalla modernità delle sue idee e non mi tirai indietro. Insieme siamo diventati la “testa di ariete” che ha sfondato la parete di una tradizione iconografica ormai esausta.

Estro e committenza, come interagiscono questi due opposti? È una questione delicata. Fino ad allora, i miei quadri dovevano solo piacere – o non piacere – alle persone che li giudicavano. Ora dovevo fare i conti con una presenza che entrava nel mio stesso processo creativo, indirizzandomi verso un risultato atteso. La mia fortuna è che ho sempre trovato in Michele Chiarlo – e oggi nei suoi figli – un desiderio autentico di bellezza. I Chiarlo credono nel loro prodotto e hanno sempre dato valore al mio lavoro. Non ho mai vissuto la committenza come un’imposizione, ma un binario da percorrere fino in fondo. Un processo faticoso, estenuante. A volte gli incontri con Michele erano una vera e propria maratona di idee, uno scambio continuo.

Alla fine, però, la sorpresa del risultato si arricchiva di tutti i punti di vista e ci appagava enormemente.

Se il vino è un’arte, l’arte cosa può aggiungere al vino?

Come ho scritto nel libro “Il segno dei filari arancioni” (che raccoglie gran parte delle etichette realizzate per Chiarlo n.d.r), la mia pittura ha contribuito a «disegnare la faccia del vino». In altre parole, applicare un segno artistico alle etichette di un produttore e farlo in maniera continuativa - come avvenuto con Chiarlo - aiuta l’intera gamma ad avere un “collante formale”. È una coerenza stilistica che, proprio grazie ai tratti del disegno e della pittura, acquista un carattere scenografico. È la manifestazione di una interiorità misteriosa, proprio come il volto esprime le emozioni che abbiamo dentro. Si potrebbe dire che l’arte aumenta il carisma del vino e crea una “convinzione” maggiore.

Non solo nei confronti di chi lo acquista, ma anche di chi lo vende. Un’etichetta in cui il produttore si riconosce sarà sempre più facile da “piazzare” di una verso cui non prova sentimenti.

How did you meet Michele Chiarlo?

What kind of labels were made back then?

It was the early 1980s, Michele came to one of my exhibits and asked to meet me. Back then, I was a novice painter who made large watercolor paintings. I was also an art teacher at the Liceo Artistico of Turin, where I lived. While talking, we discovered that we both came from the area of Asti: I was from Canelli while he was from Calamandrana. He immediately asked me to create the labels for his wines. I was struck by his open-mindedness, which he gained after travelling abroad, and his courage to embrace innovation. He wanted to drastically change the way of depicting wine, leaving tradition behind.

The labels had no soul and were all the same: they were made with yellow or off-white colored paper and the name of the wine was written in gothic or cursive. They featured family crests and had mud-green colored borders. Michele wanted a colorful label with a strong identity: one that reflects the wine’s quality and personality. Wine must be pleasant to drink, and its label must be a sight to behold: Michele wanted to showcase his wines through their labels. I was struck by his modern ideas and took on his challenge. Together, we became the “battering ram” that knocked the wall of the worn out iconographic tradition.

Inspiration and Commissions: how do these two elements interact with each other?

This is a very delicate matter.

Until then, my paintings only had to please – or displease – the audience. But now, another mind was entering my creative process and directing me towards a specific result.

I was lucky because Michele Chiarlo – and his sons – possessed an authentic desire for beauty. The Chiarlo family firmly believed in their wine, and they have always valued my work.

Commissioned work never felt like a burden, but more like a trail to be followed to the end: a tiring and exhausting process.

Sometimes, my meetings with Michele gave birth to an endless stream of ideas. But in the end, the final result included all points of view, and this greatly satisfied us.

If wine is a form of art, what can art add to wine?

As I have written in my book “Il segno dei filari arancioni” (which includes most of the labels made for Chiarlo, ed), my art helped «paint the face of wine». In other words, an additional artistic touch to a wine label – just like my experience with Chiarlo – bestows a coherent style to an entire line. The sketches and colors endow the labels with a scenic design. Art reveals a mysterious inner reality, just like how a face manifests the emotions one may feel inside. We can say that art increases a wine’s charisma and develops a greater sense of “confidence” for those who purchase it as well as the people who produce it. A label that truly embodies its producer is easier to “place” compared to a label with which he doesn’t identify.

A marzo di quest’anno Michele Chiarlo ha annunciato il suo ingresso su La Place de Bordeaux con il Barolo Cerequio 2018. E lo ha fatto segnando un importante primato: il Cerequio è il primo Barolo, nonché il primo vino piemontese ad essere distribuito dalla prestigiosa piattaforma francese. Con l’ingresso sul mercato de La Place, Michele Chiarlo entra ufficialmente nella «Big League» del commercio enoico (come viene spesso definita dagli stessi addetti ai lavori), al fianco delle etichette più blasonate a livello internazionale.

La Place de Bordeaux è uno delle “piazze enoiche” più antiche del mondo. Le sue origini risalgono al XIII secolo: fu Luigi IX, nel 1243 a concedere le prime licenze alla contrattazione del vino, poi codificate, circa un secolo più tardi, da Filippo IV. Oggi La Place tratta i due terzi di tutto il vino prodotto a Bordeaux, unendo oltre 300 négociants (distributori di vino) a commercianti e importatori in circa 170 paesi nel mondo.

Ma che cos’è La Place de Bordeaux e come opera? Lo abbiamo chiesto a Timothée Moreau, fondatore di BGV - Bureau Des Grands Vins, intermediario che opera tra i produttori di vino e i négociants de La Place.

Last March, Michele Chiarlo has officially announced the distribution of Barolo Cerequio 2018 at La Place de Bordeaux. This is an important milestone: Cerequio is the very first Barolo – and the first Piedmontese wine – to be distributed through this prestigious French network. Entry at La Place officially includes Michele Chiarlo in the «Big League» of wine trade (as the network is often called by insiders), alongside the most famous labels in the world.

La Place de Bordeaux is one of the world’s oldest “wine markets”, dating back to the 13th century. In 1243, Louis IX granted the first licenses to sell wine, which were then codified about a century later by Philip IV. Today, La Place distributes two thirds of all wine produced in Bordeaux, connecting more than 300 négociants (wine distributors) with traders and importers from almost 170 countries around the world.

But what is La Place de Bordeaux and how does it work? We interviewed Timothée Moreau, founder of BGV – Bureau Des Grands Vins, an intermediary company that works with wine producers and the négociants of La Place.

Can you tell us about your work?

Per capire cosa faccio è bene utilizzare una metafora musicale. Fingiamo per un attimo che il vigneron è colui che scrive la musica attraverso il vino. I négociants, in questo senso, sono gli strumenti attraverso cui il vino è in grado di suonare nel mondo. Io sono una figura intermedia, il direttore d’orchestra, la persona a cui è affidato il compito di mettere in contatto la musica con i suoi esecutori, nel miglior arrangiamento possibile. Fuor di metafora, provengo da una famiglia di intermediari che ha sempre lavorato con i top wine di Bordeaux. Ho continuato la tradizione fondando, nel 2021, il Bureau Des Grands Vins, attraverso cui mi occupo della mediazione di tutti i vini che sono prodotti «oltre» Bordeaux (francesi e internazionali), aiutandoli ad entrare nell’ecosistema de La Place.

Let me use music as a metaphor to help you understand. Let’s say that a vigneron is a person who writes music using wine. While the négociants are the instruments that allow wine to be played around the world. That makes me the conductor, the person standing in the middle: I must put the music in contact with the performers, producing the best possible arrangement. Metaphor aside, I come from a family who has worked as intermediaries for Bordeaux’s top wines. I continued this tradition and founded Bureau Des Grands Vins in 2021, working as a broker for wines produced «beyond» Bordeaux (including other French wines as well as international ones). I help these wines enter the ecosystem of La Place.

Ingegnere nucleare, gastronomo, giornalista. Degustatore di vini per oltre 25 anni. Allievo e amico di Veronelli. Si potrebbero usare molti appellativi per descrivere Alessandro Masnaghetti, ma quello con cui è diventato celebre nel mondo lo ha coniato Wine Spectator in un articolo di qualche anno fa: Map Man, l’«uomo delle mappe», il «cartografo del vino».

Lui lo rivendica con fierezza, specificando che l’idea di cartografo è però riduttiva: «Quando disegno una mappa non sono interessato solo ai confini di un vigneto – racconta – ma alla storia, alla cultura, alle condizioni pedoclimatiche, all’enologia, alla conoscenza dei pro-

duttori, alle migliaia di degustazioni effettuate sul territorio. La mappa di un vigneto è un’operazione a 360 gradi, che coinvolge conoscenze specifiche in più settori. La geografia, in fondo, è solo l’aspetto esteriore di un Cru, che è un contenuto di natura e umanità».

Nuclear engineer, gastronome, journalist. A wine taster for more than 25 years. A student and a friend of Gino Veronelli. Alessandro Masnaghetti has more than one role, but the title that has made him famous all over the world was the one given to him by Wine Spectator in an article a couple of years ago. The renowned magazine called him the «Map Man», the «wine cartographer».

Alessandro proudly claims this title but says that the term «cartographer» is not an exhaustive description: «For me, drawing a map does not only mean marking the boundaries of a vineyard – he says – but also tracing its history and culture, identifying the pedoclimatic conditions and the wine-

making processes, knowing the producers and all the numerous tastings carried out within the territory. Mapping a vineyard is a 360-degree operation that requires specific knowledge in multiple areas. A Cru is more than just the geography of a territory: it also encloses elements of nature and humanity».

Alessandro Masnaghetti, partiamo proprio da qui, che cos’è per lei un Cru? Come mi disse una volta Beppe Colla: «ci sono tantissime buone vigne nel mondo. Ma il vero Cru è quello dove il vino matura un carattere specifico». Dunque il Cru non coinvolge solo la qualità del vino, ma la sua identità.

Perché ha deciso di dedicarsi alle mappe del vino? È bene precisare che la mia passione per le mappe deriva da oltre 25 anni di degustazioni. Prima di essere cartografo ho assaggiato e recensito migliaia di vini, conosciuto i territori e i produttori, indagato la storia e la cultura di moltissime aree vitivinicole in Italia e nel mondo. Le mappe

sono diventate uno strumento per mettere ordine. La visualizzazione cartografica del vino ti permette di avere moltissime informazioni in una forma sintetica ed efficace, a colpo d’occhio.

Ricorda il suo primo lavoro legato alle mappe?

Bisogna risalire al ’94, quando ancora lavoravo per Gino Veronelli.

Gli proposi di realizzare la carta dei vigneti della denominazione Barbaresco a partire dai tre comuni: Barbaresco, Treiso e Neive. Lui ne fu entusiasta, il pubblico, purtroppo, molto meno. Ricordo che la prima mappa, dedicata al Comune di Barbaresco, vendette pochissimo. Sospendemmo il progetto e migliaia di quelle cartine finirono a marcire nel fienile di Gino. Ne ho salvate solo una ventina di copie.

Alessandro Masnaghetti, what is a Cru? As Beppe Colla once told me: «There are plenty of wonderful vineyards in the world. But the real Cru is where wine develops a specific character». Therefore, the term «Cru» is not only about wine quality, but also about wine identity.

Why did you decide to make wine maps?

I would like to point out that my passion for maps is the fruit of more than 25 years of tasting wine. Before making maps, I have tasted and reviewed thousands of wines, discovered different territories and met numerous producers.

I have thoroughly explored the history and culture of a great number of wine areas in Italy and abro-

ad. For me, maps have become an instrument for putting things into order: wine maps aid in providing synthetic and effective information.

Do you remember your first map-making activity?

We have to go back to 1994, when I was still working for Gino Veronelli. I suggested the drawing of a map of the Barbaresco vineyards located in the municipalities of Barbaresco, Treiso and Neive. He was very excited about it, but the public did not share the same sentiment. My first map, dedicated to the Municipality of Barbaresco, sold very few copies. We put the project on hold and thousands of maps wasted away in Gino’s barn.

I managed to keep about twenty copies of those maps.

Tra il 2005 e il 2006, attraverso le newsletter di Enogea, proposi le mappe dei vigneti di Panzano in Chianti e Castiglione Falletto.

Memore del primo insuccesso, decisi di realizzarle in formato piccolo. Piacquero molto e cominciai a seguire questa strada: una pubblicazione preliminare su Enogea e poi, se le cose fossero andate bene, una versione più grande. Dal 2015 il mio lavoro si è specializzato quasi esclusivamente sulla cartografia del vino, con centinaia di zone mappate e importanti lavori realizzati per molti Consorzi.

Oggi sono proprio i Consorzi e le aziende ad utilizzare le sue mappe. Si è fatto un’idea di come il suo lavoro ha favorito il marketing del vino?

Ogni mappa nasce dal mio background da giornalista: prima di essere uno strumento di marketing vuole presentare una ricerca di dati, fatti e nozioni il più possibile oggettivi. Sono contento che vengano usate per comunicare un territorio o un determinato Cru, perché favoriscono la diffusione di informazioni verificate, di natura non pubblicitaria.

Il vero intento del mio lavoro è quello di riavvicinare le persone

alle radici, di creare una consapevolezza della tradizione su basi scientifiche e documentate.

L’informazione del vino secondo lei non è attendibile?

A volte è confusa, contraddittoria, piena di nozioni non verificate e leggende, spesso creata ad hoc per esaltare un certo aspetto a discapito di altri. Oggi che i produttori sono diventati i primi comunicatori del loro vino, bypassando i media tradizionali, hanno bisogno di strumenti validi, condivisi e condivisibili su cui basare le informazioni. Il mio lavoro – e quello di molti altri ottimi ricercatori sul campo – dovrebbe favorire lo sviluppo di un’etica della comunicazione vitivinicola. Una sorta di vademecum scientifico, attendibile e accessibile da tutti, da cui attingere a piene mani per evitare la confusione e la proliferazione di informazioni errate (a volte palesemente false) che confondono gli appassionati e, a lungo andare, minano la fiducia tra i consumatori, i produttori e il territorio.

Una zona come quella delle Langhe – solo per fare un esempio – merita una comunicazione di questo genere. Non serve mentire, falsificare o ingigantire nulla: la realtà è la storia più bella da raccontare.

The first map may have wasted away, but not your passion.

Between 2005 and 2006, through the Enogea newsletter, I drew maps of the vineyards in Panzano in Chianti and Castiglione Falletto.

Keeping my first unsuccessful attempt in mind, I decided to make smaller maps. These were well-received, so I decided to publish them first on the Enogea newsletter and then, if things went well, create larger maps. Since 2015, I have specialized in creating wine maps, tracing hundreds of different territories and working for many different wine consortia.

At present, wine consortia and wineries are the ones who make use of your maps. How does your work favor wine marketing?

Each map bears my background as a journalist: before being a tool for marketing, the maps aim to provide objective data, facts and information. I am pleased that the maps are used to communicate a certain territory or Cru: this enables the circulation of verified information, and not so much as serving as an advertisement tool. My work aims to bring people back to their roots and promote a certain sense of awareness of tradition, one that

is rooted on scientific and documented data.

In your opinion, is the available information regarding wine not reliable?

Sometimes, the information is chaotic and contradictory, filled with unverified data or hearsay that are often specifically created to emphasize certain aspects over others. At present, the wine producers are the first communicators of their wines, often sidestepping traditional media: as such, they need valid, shared and shareable tools to back the information they convey.

My work – and that of many other excellent researchers in the field – should encourage the development of an ethics of wine communication. A reliable and accessible guidebook based on scientific data that provides verifiable information and avoids confusion as well as the dissemination of incorrect (sometimes even blatantly false) information that disorient wine lovers and – in the long run – undermine the trust among consumers, producers and the territory. For example, an area like the Langhe must have this type of communication: there is no need to provide false information or exaggerate things – reality, as it is, is the best story to tell.

L’ Associazione Produttori del Nizza nasce il 19 novembre 2002, quando ancora il Nizza era una sottozona della Barbera d’Asti. Attualmente è costituita da oltre 70 soci che collaborano attivamente per la valorizzazione della nuova denominazione «Nizza», riconosciuta ufficialmente nel 2014. Oggi le bottiglie di Nizza prodotte superano le 630.000 unità con una crescita, in numeri assoluti, che ha superato il 30% in cinque anni, facendo del Nizza un vino sempre più riconosciuto come punta d’eccellenza del Monferrato. Da agosto 2021, Stefano Chiarlo è il nuovo presidente dell’Associazione Produttori. A lui abbiamo chiesto il segreto del successo del Nizza e soprattutto, la sua capacità di essere ambasciatore delle sue terre, con importanti ricadute sul territorio.

Che ruolo ha giocato l’Associazione nell’ufficializzazione della denominazione?

Senza l’Associazione Produttori, probabilmente, non ci sarebbe il Nizza. È grazie agli sforzi e all’impegno di tutti gli associati che abbiamo potuto scrivere il disciplinare e seguire il complesso iter burocratico per far nascere il Nizza Docg, il primo luglio del 2014. Un risultato incredibile se si pensa che il primo gruppo era composta da una decina di “sognatori”, tra cui compariva, in prima linea, Michele Chiarlo. Oggi possiamo contare su 70 associati, che producono complessivamente 630.000 bottiglie, con una crescita di produzione che, negli ultimi cinque anni, ha toccato punte del 30%. Attorno al Nizza si è compattato tutto il territorio, dando il via, tra le altre cose, ad una rinascita enoturistica, che attira anche gli investimenti stranieri.

Che cosa ha reso l’Associazione così affiatata?

Il Nizza è nato come progetto comune di vigna e di territorio, con in mente l’obiettivo dell’eccellenza. Ogni anno, per fare un esempio, i produttori del Nizza partecipavano ad una degustazione alla cieca dei loro vini. Si raccoglievano tutti i giudizi confrontando ciascuna etichetta con le altre. Queste pioneristiche degustazioni hanno contribuito alla crescita della qualità dei singoli Nizza e, nel contempo, hanno aiutato a definire un modello unico e identitario. L’assaggio, il confronto, la condivisione dei saperi: l’Associazione Produttori ha il pregio di aver tracciato una strada alla consapevolezza del Nizza e delle sue potenzialità. E c’è un’altra cosa che ha fatto la differenza.

The Associazione Produttori del Nizza was founded on November 19, 2002, when Nizza was still a sub-zone of Barbera d’Asti. The association has more than 70 members who actively work to promote the new «Nizza» denomination, officially established in 2014. What facilitated the cooperation among the members?

Without the Associazione Produttori, there would probably be no Nizza denomination. Thanks to the members’ effort and commitment, we have drawn up the disciplinary and complete the complex bureaucratic process to establish Nizza Docg on July 1, 2014. It was certainly an extraordinary feat, considering that the initial group consisted of ten “dreamers”, including Michele Chiarlo. Today, we have 70 members who produce a total of 630,000 bottles: a number that has increased in the last five years.

Nizza united the whole territory: among other things, it enabled a “renaissance” of wine tourism in the area, even attracting foreign investments.

Nizza is a project that aims to pursue excellence in the vineyards and in the territory. For example, Nizza producers organized blind tastings of their wines every year to compare the different labels among them and gather information. Initiatives like these have greatly contributed to the growth of each wine in terms of quality, but they also set a unique and specific example. Tasting, discussing, and sharing of knowledge: the Associazione Produttori has traced a path that leads to greater awareness of Nizza and its potential. And there is another thing that made the difference.

Lui è Capitan Cru, il cavaliere senza macchia del buon vino e del buon cibo, che ogni giorno lotta per ridare alle cose il loro vero nome.

Di lui si sa pochissimo, quasi nulla, ma è sufficiente seguirne le battaglie per capire che sta dalla parte giusta. Combatte senza posa e senza censure l’affettazione dei «wine villains» il cui obiettivo è di sommergere il mondo del vino con la fuffa enogastronomica.

Per fare questo, non ha bisogno di muscoli (anche se non gustano). Super gusto e super olfatto sono le armi di cui dispone. E non ha peli sulla lingua.

Riuscirà il nostro Capitan Cru a riportare la giustizia smascherando le ipocrisie dell’«eno-mondo»?
