He will present his latest book, “Sweeney on the Rocks”, which has been described as a “smashing crime novel, adding to his perfectly pitched comic voice with nicely drawn characters and a strong sense of place.” Also, we may be able to persuade him to tell us about his book for children, Montana for Kids: The Story of Our State. “Montana for Kids” is the winner in the “Best Western Storyteller” category of the 2019 Spur Award. Further rave reviews of his work have appeared on the Today Show and in the LA Times, People magazine, Kirkus Review, Publisher’s Weekly, Booklist, and many others. In addition to these books already mentioned, Jones is the author of the novels, “Last Year’s River” and “A Bloom of Bones”, as well as a highly relevant consideration of the ethics of hunting, “A Quiet Place of Violence”. With William Kittredge, Jones is an editor of “The Best of Montana’s Short Fiction”. He is also the author of more than 100 published short stories, articles, essays, and poems. He has

1 p.m. Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary 615 2nd Street East, Red Lodge Enrichment affords opportunities for our residents to explore, play, and problem solve. The right kind of enrichment increases the overall wellness of animals in captivity. However, these items take a great deal of time to create. You can be a part of working with Sanctuary staff in building enrichment items from various materials- retired fire hose, PVC pipes, and natural materials like willow. During this workshop, you will learn more about the different kinds of enrichment, and the types of behaviors our animal care staff look for when they evaluate enrichment. Due to the nature of these workshops, we ask that participants be ages 10 to adult.

Universal Accessibility It is the goal to make the museum accessible to everyone. Public restrooms, located in the main building, are fully accessible. Pioneer boardwalk town and main building are fully accessible. The ten-acre campus is on flat ground with boardwalks and grass paths. Please call with any special arrangement requests.

The Huntley Project Museum of Irrigated Agriculture tells the unique story of the Huntley Irrigation Project. With 10.4 acres, 18 homestead buildings, hundreds of farm implements, and thousands of other artifacts on display, the Museum interprets, preserves restores and portrays life on the Project from the early 1900s to the late 20th century. The display at Osborn Park has one of the largest collections of horse-drawn machinery, early sugar beet equipment, corn, grain and hay mowers. Other displays include a tar paper shack, 2 school houses, an early day doctor’s office, bank, and a horse barn made from sawed cottonwood. The Huntley Irrigation Project was the fifth U.S. Bureau of Reclamation project in the United States and opened June 26th, 1907. Staff gives custom guided tours year-round! From Labor Day until Memorial Day the museum is open from Tuesday thru Saturday 10 am to 4 pm. Expanded hours after Memorial Day for the summer. Summer hours are 9 am to 5 pm, 7 days a week. Tours Daily tours generally last 1 hr to 1.5 hrs. Staff can do an abbreviated tour for inclement weather or time constraints. Several times a year there are special tours. Visit in October for a haunted tour and in December for a candlelight tour. The museum also does group tours and school tours. Please call to schedule your tour today! The Reclamation Project that changed history In the semiarid Northern Great Plains scarcity of water dictated land use and settlement. The Yellowstone River Valley in south-central Montana supplied drinking water and a means of transportation for thousands of years. Lewis

and Clark traveled down the river on July 25, 1806, through what would become the Huntley Irrigation Project. Other guides and explorers would travel through this area 70 years later, just before steamboats started exploring the area. Shortly after the arrival of steamboats, the railroads came through Billings Montana. The potential of the Huntley Project area was recognized by Fredrick Billings who started a conversation with government officials. The US government had been working on plans to help settle certain areas of the United States. In 1902 the Reclamation Act was passed to help with settlement of the land. The US government purchased the land from the local Crow Tribe and started construction on the Huntley Irrigation Project, an area about 27 miles long and 4 miles wide. The area was planned out on paper noting the placement of towns, schools and irrigation routes. In 1907 the gates of the Huntley Project Irrigation canal were opened. Farm units were 40 acres each. A drawing was set up on June 26, 1907, for the 582 farm units in the Huntley Irrigation Project. The Huntley Irrigation Project became known as the Huntley Project consisting of several small towns. A drought around 1910 forced many settlers to abandon their claims. Other families stayed and lived out their pioneer dreams. Many of the pioneer families have relatives that have lived in the same area for over 100 years. The canal behind the museum is the original canal still going strong providing life-giving water to grow crops today.

Earth Day Celebration!

Celebrate Earth Day by giving back! The Montana Audubon Center is excited to present our 11th annual Earth Day Celebration, to be held at the Center on South Billings Boulevard from 9-12:30 on Saturday, April 27th. The annual Earth Day Celebration is the primary publicvolunteer event at the Center, with more than 5,000 hours of work done during the event over its ten-year history. The 2019 event is made possible through a partnership with the Yellowstone River Parks Association and sponsorships from the Yellowstone Conservation District and Lucky's Market. Before the work begins, anyone is welcome to join our staff for a 7am bird walk. The 54-acre outdoor classroom at the Audubon Center started as a gravel mine and weedy field more than fifteen years ago. It was acquired by the Yellowstone River Parks Association, whose members saw its potential as a publicly accessible natural area. Since that time, with the help of thousands of volunteers, it has grown into a community landscape of cottonwood groves, wildflower gardens, ponds, and wetlands. More than 25,000 people visit the site each year for education programs and trail walking. It’s location immediately adjacent to Norm’s Island and the Heritage Trail makes an ideal space for recreation, education, and connection with the natural world. Projects this year to begin at 9:00 a.m., and include our everpopular trash pickup nature hikes, work on our trail system, invasive weed removal, restoration plantings, an update to the Fledglings Learning Garden, installation of bat houses on Norm’s Island, and a poop pickup patrol (bring gloves!). Come for an hour or the whole day. Bring water, work gloves, and the whole family. No fee for participation. Volunteers are invited to a free BBQ/potluck lunch at noon. Hotdogs and hamburgers will be provided, but feel free to bring along a side dish to share! The event takes place rain or shine. Individuals and groups are welcome. For more information, contact the Center at 406-294-5099 or visit www.mtaudubon. org/center.

Wine and brewmasters celebrated at annual festival From Montana to Australia, the 2019 Wine & Food Festival brings beverage experts to Billings in a celebration of wine and beer. This year’s featured winemasters are Ewan Proctor of Penfolds in South Australia, and John and Lane Giguiere of Matchbook Wine Company in Zamora, California. Zach Nelson, the 2019 brewmaster, is from closer to home at KettleHouse Brewing Company in Missoula. Each brings with them a mastery of fine wine and craft beer that’s sure to tantalize taste buds during the week-long festival of events in May. Proctor is the Penfolds brand ambassador and head of luxury education for Treasury Wine Estates America. Recently, he spent three years in Asia, during which he was pivotal to the phenomenal success and growth of the iconic Australian winemaker. An experienced sommelier, Proctor joined Penfolds after a decorated career in Sydney and Melbourne, Australia. John and Lane Giguiere are a husband-and-wife team who have been in the wine business since the early 1980s. The two, along with John’s brother Karl, founded R.H. Phillips Winery in the Dunnigan Hills region of California in 1983. Starting as a small, family-owned vineyard and winery operation, the company grew into a 750,000-case producer on a 2,500-acre plot of land. Lane retired from R.H. Phillips in 2004 to start Crew Wine Company, now Matchbook Wine Company, and John joined her the following year. Nelson is a lead brewer at KettleHouse Brewing Company, where he has worked his way up the ranks from cleaning kegs in 2012. Nelson now oversees the brewing and production operations in the company’s three facilities. The Missoulian brewery is known for matching quality beers to the quality of the Montana outdoor experience, and they’re the makers of award-winning Cold Smoke Scotch Ale. All of the wine and brew masters will be present during the Wine and Food Pairings under the “Grand” Tent event on Friday, May 17. The event features food and beverage samples from dozens of vendors, a silent auction, and an on-site wine store in the “grand” white tent at MSU Billings. The featured presenters will also share their expertise during Brewmaster Symposium and Winemaster Symposium events earlier that week. Tickets to the Friday night pairing event, along with other Wine & Food Festival events, are on sale now at msubfoundation.com/shop. Blodwen at the NOVA Center NOVA Center for the Performing Arts, in a co-production with Rimrock Opera Foundation in Billings, Montana, will premiere Joseph Parry’s Blodwen (the first Welsh opera) – yn Gymraeg! [in Welsh] on May 10, 11 and May 18, 19. This will be the first staged performance of Blodwen in the United States and the first American company to produce an opera sung in Welsh. Composer Joseph Parry (1841-1903), was born in Wales and emigrated with his family to Danville, Pennsylvania, when he was twelve years old. As a musician, Parry rose to fame among immigrant Welsh communities and became equally wellknown and beloved on both sides of the Atlantic. Following the pattern of Romantic Italian opera, Blodwen takes place in 14th century Wales and includes a wedding, lovers, dying heroes and a dramatic final twist. The opera’s stirring music shows Parry at his dramatic best: heroic and romantic solos, exciting ensembles, powerful choruses and of course, the famous ‘Hywel a Blodwen’ love duet which remains popular as a concert item and is considered one of the highlights of amateur performances of the opera.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see a rare milestone in the history of Welsh-American music. Blodwen will be sung in Welsh with English super-titles. The cast, consisting of local and regional talent also includes artists that hail from Wales: Blodwen - Janie Sutton, Arglwyddes/Lady Maelor - Nerys Jones, Elen - Kate Meyer, Hywel - Scott Wichael, Arthur - Jeremy Huw Williams, Iolo - Douglas Nagel, Conductor Dulais Rhys, Director - Osian Rhys Tickets are $21/adults, $16/seniors or military, $10/students. The Historic Hardin Area

cavalry post in the world. Nothing remains of the fort today. In 1930 a monument was placed on site by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The monument was moved to the Big Horn County Museum in 2016. One of the main attractions in the museum gallery is the Fort Custer exhibit. The exhibit includes: the Fort Custer Stage Coach, uniforms, weapons, artifacts, photographs and a scale model of the fort.

Museum and Visitor Center

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is rich in history. Founded in 1907, Hardin is the youngest and largest town in Big Horn County and serves as the county seat. Hardin was named after Samuel H. Hardin, a cattleman who came to this territory from Texas.

Big Horn County

Big Horn County was established on January 13, 1913. The county is 5,025 sq. miles, equaling 3,250,000 acres, which includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations. The courthouse was built in 1937 with the help of the WPA (Work Progress Administration).

Bozeman Trail & Fort C. F. Smith

The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 18631866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

Little Bighorn Battlefield

On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, Montana.

Fort Custer

Fort Custer was established in 1877 after the Battle of the Little Bighorn on the high bluff near the junction of the Little Bighorn and Bighorn Rivers. The million dollar fort was funded by Congress to hold the Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest

Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 497 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. You feel as if you are walking down the historic street of Big Horn County’s early years. Whether you are looking for local, regional or state information, the museum’s friendly visitor center staff is eager to provide brochures and to assist with directions. Enjoy the gift shop and interpretive exhibits 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily May-Sept., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Oct.-April. Admission is $Adult- $6, Seniors-$5, Student & Active Military $3, and 6 & under is free. For information about the museum and the area call 406-665-1671 or visit bighorncountymuseum.org.

Historic District

Hardin’s Historic District starts near Railroad Street and Center Avenue through the 200 and 400 blocks, plus buildings facing Third Street from Cheyenne Avenue to Crow Avenue. The District earned a listing on the National Historic Register in 1984. Call 406-629-0134 to schedule a walking tour. The Historic Preservation Office is in the depot. Big Horn County and Hardin information are also on the National Register data base.
