FWP offers reward for information on dumped antelope BILLINGS — Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks is offering a reward for information about five antelope that were dumped and illegally left to waste along Alkali Creek Road over the weekend. Game warden Brad Balis said someone dumped the antelope along Alkali Creek Road between Foothill Drive and Skyway Drive late Saturday or early Sunday. Most of the meat illegally was left to waste. Anyone with information about the illegal kills is encouraged to call Balis at 406-247-2940 or email him at bbalis@mt.gov. FWP is offering a reward of as much as $1,000 for information

leading to a conviction of the persons responsible for the illegal dumping. Anyone with information about the crimes is encouraged to call FWP’s 24-hour wildlife tip line at 1-800-TIPMONT (800-847-6668). The 1-800-TIP-MONT program is a toll-free number where people can report violations of fish, wildlife or park regulations. Callers may remain anonymous. It is similar to the well-known Crimestoppers program and offers rewards for information resulting in conviction of persons who abuse Montana's natural, historic or cultural resources.

Visual depictions of “critters” will run amok in the galleries of the Yellowstone Art Museum in two related exhibitions: Unleashed: Critters from the Permanent Collection and Ephemerality, recent works by Billings, Montana, artist Louis Habeck. Triceratops heads and reclining horses, baboons and lions, dogs and cats, and a wide range of other animals from the museum’s collection both of the wild and domesticated sort will likely lead to sometimes ironic and often sublime relationships that exist between subject matter and materials. Between 1820 and 1849 artist Edward Hicks painted over 100 versions of the Peaceable Kingdom, which was inspired by chapter 11 of Isaiah "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together...” In an election year when the lessons from this scripture seems so untenable, the Yellowstone Art Museum offers up amusing and serious examples that reference the Biblical text, while demonstrating the long-lived relationships artists have with animal subjects. Horses will reside near wild cats, and house nemeses dogs and cats will grace the galleries side-by-side to remind us of our love of animals and of the possibility of tolerance and peace that is attainable in the real world as envisioned by Hicks. Both exhibitions take place on the museum’s second floor in the Montana Gallery and adjacent corridor. The exhibitions open to the public Friday, October 28th. A public reception takes place the following week 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, November 3rd. These offerings should prove to be lively and popular given the attraction to animals demonstrated

in enumerable social media memes and animal exhibitions slated around the country. Many of the selected exhibition objects have rarely if ever been seen publicly and never in this context. Education programming will focus on the manner in which individual works were created and on notions about sharing and caring in the natural and “man-made” worlds. The exhibition will include numerous objects by locally, regionally, and nationally known artists such as Will Barnet, Deborah Butterfield, Gennie DeWeese, and Edith Freeman to name but a few. Related offerings include an animal illustration workshop led by Maria Isabel Bonilla Uribe on Saturday, October 29, 2016. Sign up for this workshop by going online to www.artmuseum.org/ education/adult-education or by contacting the museum Buford by Jerry Cornelia front desk. An artist’s talk by Louis Habeck will take place on November 17, 2016, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Louis is a recent recipient of the Montana Arts Council’s Artist Innovation Award, which is made possible by the Montana Arts Council, an agency of state government, through funding from the National endowment for the Arts. Take part also in a joint animal scavenger hunt between the Yellowstone Art Museum and ZooMontana. During the Unleashed exhibition, pick up the scavenger hunt list at either location to start participating and compete for prizes. The museum is a barrier-free facility and free parking is available. Members are admitted free, and the general public can visit for a nominal admission fee. For more information, visit the museum’s website www.artmuseum.org.

Iconic Movie, TV Series ‘Fame’ Live On Stage at Alberta Bair Theater October 30 at 3:00 p.m. Only 300 tickets remain for Fame the Musical, which is kicking off Alberta Bair Theater’s Broadway Series presented by U.S. Bank, on Sunday, October 30 at 3:00 p.m. The 1980’s pop culture phenomenon of Fame is now live on stage, and the national tour is making a stop for one night only in Billings. Set at the famous School for the Performing Arts in New York, high octane choreography drives the story of special relationships, revealing hopes and dreams of talented students and their dedicated teachers. With its unforgettable lyrics, “FAME! I'm gonna live forever! Baby Remember my name!,” the title song is the fever pitch anthem that drives these competitive young people forward in their quest to the bright lights of show business. Staged in more than 25 countries to 50 million people, David De Silva, known affectionately as Father Fame, once again proves the viability of audiences rooting for young people to fight for and realize their dreams

with this fully staged theatrical version of the Emmy winning TV series and Hollywood hit movie Fame. This all new presentation of Fame the Musical is produced by the veteran team of James Murtha and William Weir, under the direction of Dom Ruggiero. Acclaimed choreographer Antoinette DiPietropolo choreographed the dance numbers. The musical’s book was written by Jose Fernandez with show lyrics by Jacques Levy and music by Stephen Margoshes. The title song "FAME" was written by Dean Pitchford and Michael Gore. ABT’s Broadway Series is presented by U.S. Bank. This performance is sponsored by ABC6/Fox4 and MY105.9. Tickets, $54, $49, $39 and $28 for students with valid I.D., are available at the Alberta Bair Theater Box Office on the corner of 3rd Ave N and N Broadway, by phone at 406-2566052 (box office hours are Monday through Saturday, 12:00 Noon until 5:00 p.m. ) and/or online at www.albertabairtheater.org.

To promote our youth opera, Cinderella, NOVA Center for the Performing Arts and Montana Steampunk Association are holding a steampunk themed ball on November 10 at 6:00 P.M. The Cinderella Steampunk Ball will be held in NOVA’s black box theater, and will include food, music, a photo booth, and a lot of dancing. The Montana Steampunk Association will be hosting booths featuring their handmade steampunk styled accessories. The Montana Steampunk Association began as a one-time event based around a ball with a steampunk theme. Due to significant enthusiasm immediately following their first event, they have branched out. They are a group that not only hosts events, they provide support for the events of others, they have an online themed chat and have developed a retail portion that provides steampunk accoutrements. Find them on Facebook at Montana Steampunk, Montana Steampunk Jewelry and the Montana Tardis! This is not your average fairy tale. In this Cinderella, composed by Peter Maxwell Davies and directed by Janie Sutton, a young Cinderella travels from home to become the au pair for three young women who dream of nothing but marrying rich. This retelling includes a trusty fairy “cat” mother, a chorus of kittens, and of course a midnight striking clock. Cinderella is being sponsored by The Paint Doctor. Cinderella will run November 11, 12, 13*, 17, 18, 19 & 20*. Friday and Saturday performances are at 7:30 p.m.. Sunday

Erth’s DINOSAUR ZOO Live™ at Alberta Bair Theater Erth’s DINOSAUR ZOO Live™ tours through prehistoric Australia, bringing an eye-popping array of ancient creatures to life on stage. The audience observes and interacts with extraordinarily life-like creatures, just like those that inhabited the Southern Hemisphere millions of years ago. And, they will meet a menagerie of insects, mammals and dinosaurs in their ancient environment, in this highly imaginative, entertaining and educational live show. Erth’s large-scale puppets were developed in consultation with paleontologists, based on current science and interpretations of fossil evidence. Employing sophisticated design and electronics,

these giants are brought to life by skilled performers and puppeteers, made all the more real through the magic of theatre. From the sweetly curious baby Dryosaur, to the peaceful hulk Titanosaur, and even the teethgnashing T-rex -- Erth’s DINOSAUR ZOO Live™ is a unique interactive theater performance that stimulates the imagination in a way that connects children to their world. Erth Visual & Physical, Inc. is a highly creative ‘visual and physical’ theatre company based in Sydney, Australia. Since its beginnings in 1990, the company has created installations, site specific

productions, performance artistry, and original live theatre -- always striving to provide audiences with eye popping visual experiences. They have built an Australiawide, and increasingly international reputation based on their exceptional work. MOSS MANSION HORROR THEATER - H.H. HOLMES, THE MURDER CASTLE

Halloween at the Moss Mansion … it just doesn’t get much better than this. Welcome to The Murder Castle … America’s first serial killer, H.H. Holmes, and some of his unlucky victims will be portrayed by local actors and actresses in this Horror Theater. The Velocity Of Autumn

By Eric Coble Alexandra, a 79-year-old artist is in a showdown with her family over where she’ll spend her remaining years. In Alexandra’s corner are her wit, her volcanic passion and the fact that she’s barricaded herself in her Brooklyn brownstone with enough Molotov Cocktails to take out the block. But her children have their own secret weapon: estranged son Chris, who returns after 20 years, crawls through Alexandra’s second floor window and becomes the family’s unlikely mediator. The Velocity Of Autumn is a wickedly funny and wonderfully touching discovery of the fragility and ferocity of life. Location: Billings Studio Theatre, 1500 Rimrock Rd., Billings, MT 59102 Show Times: Thursday, Friday, Saturday: 7:30 p.m. (Doors Open At 7 p.m.) Sunday: 2 p.m. (Doors Open At 1:30 p.m.) Ticket Prices: Adults: $20.00 Student/Senior: $18.00 OCT. 20-29

FRANKIE BALLARD

When Frankie Ballard was growing up in Battle Creek, Michigan, his father played him one classic album over and over again: Marty Robbins’ Gunfighter Ballads and Trail Songs, featuring Robbins’ signature hit “El Paso.” Now Ballard, a quick-draw guitarist and rough-hewn singer, has cut his own metaphorical gunfighter album, decamping from Nashville to a gritty El Paso studio to record the follow-up to his 2014 breakout Sunshine & Whiskey. For Ballard, who scored three consecutive Number One singles off Sunshine & Whiskey — “Helluva Life,” the title track and “Young & Crazy” — it was imperative that he leave behind the safety of Nashville for the wilds of the Mexico border. Setting up shop at the famed Sonic Ranch, just south of El Paso in Tornillo, Texas, Ballard, producer Marshall Altman (Sunshine & Whiskey) and his band threw themselves headlong into the music, eating and sleeping at the studio. Their goal: make a bona fide album. The Pub Station, 2502 1st Ave N., Billings, MT 59101 8 p.m. $25 Advance/ $30 Day of Show OCT. 28

HAUNTINGS OF BILLINGS

Think you know Billings? Join us for tales of the dark side of Billings history, tales that you won’t find in the history books. Tales of rumrunners, and ladies of the night, Chinatown, the mysterious tunnels that once linked downtown Billings, Billings’ oneand-only lynching, and the ghost that appeared for years after. Tonight we travel the streets of historic downtown Billings with history that describes the haunting of a particular barstool or wear a hard hat! You’re welcome to hoist a cold brew at a haunted bar after the tour. But if you don’t believe in ghosts, then avoid one particular barstool or wear a hard hat! The first motel in Billings has a ghost in room 226 and children footsteps running in an upstairs hallway when no children are present. Odd things do sometimes happen on our tours, so we encourage guest to bring cameras and tape recorders along. Come and enjoy the history of Billings with some stories of haunted places or things. Note about your Guide: Retired Montana Librarian, Karen Stevens is a certified ghost hunter and she’s found all kinds of ghosts in the Treasure State. Karen has personally investigated each haunting and interviewed eyewitnesses to the paranormal sights and sounds. Extended research of haunted downtown sites for the tours and her books has lead to refreshed stories of Billings wild and wicked side. Karen Stevens will narrate the tours and have book sales and signing after each tour. Dude Rancher Lodge, 415 North 29th St., 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. $25 OCT. 28, 29

21+ An easily confused and very shy individual, Charlie Parr has been traveling around singing his songs ever since leaving Austin Minnesota in the 1980’s in search of Spider John Koerner, whom he found about 100 miles north at the Viking Bar one Sunday night. The experience changed his life, made him more or less unemployable, and brings us to now: 13 recordings, 250 shows a year or more, 200,000 miles on a well broke in Kia, and a nasty fear of heights. Resonator fueled folk songs from Duluth Minnesota. The Pub Station, 2502 1st Ave N., Billings, MT 59101 9 p.m. $7 OCT. 30

Vita and the Woolf is the brainchild of Jennifer Pague. It is an electronic soul pop music group from Philadelphia consisting of Pague on vocals and synths and Adam Shumski on percussion. The name was originally inspired by the love relationship between the writers Vita SackvilleWest and Virginia Woolf. Much of Vita’s music is vocal driven and includes a wide range of harmonies. The haunting harmonies and vocal layering combined with crazy instrumentation and simple drumming produce a sound that reflects R&B, soul, jazz, and powerful choral ballads. Jennifer’s incredible vocal talents have been continuously compared to that of Florence Welch, and the music has been inspired by the likes of James Blake, Radiohead, Alicia Keys, Of Montreal. Vita and the Woolf has performed at XPoNential Music Festival in 2015 on the same lineup as St. Vincent, My Morning Jacket, and Courtney Barnett. They have also opened for Milk & Bone, Christine Perri & Colbie Caillat, and The Parlour Tricks. They are going on a cross-country tour in October supporting Rasputina. MSUB presents, “The 1880 Crow Delegation to D.C.: Cultural Identity, Representation, and Legacy,” trains across the nation. “Medicine Crow drew pictures of many sights, including the U.S. Capitol Building, trains, steam boats and military gunboats on the Potomac River, and animals he saw,” Heidenreich said. “All these, as well as drawings of his military exploits, are part of the Barstow Ledger Drawings kept in the (MSUB) Library Special Collections.” Red Star, descendent of Medicine Crow, lives and works in Portland where this installation, with digital reproductions of Medicine Crow’s ledger drawings, appeared at the Portland Art Museum in late 2014. The re-installation of her project at MSUB marks the first time her project will be shown with Medicine Crow’s original drawings. The opportunity to show this body of work so near her home and with the original Medicine Crow drawings is very meaningful to Red Star. She hopes the series of presentations and conversations extend an effort to “humanize Medicine Crow.” “The single delegation portraits of Medicine Crow are the seed for the entire concept of the exhibition,” Red Star said. “I view this exhibition as my ultimate remake of Medicine Crow; a chance for me to tell the story behind the photographs. I want people to realize that the images of Medicine Crow are more than just a handsome Native man. The images represent a human being, a reservation era chief, the forming of the Crow Indian reservation, the loss of Crow lands, the changing of a people, and the resilience of a culture.” Other presentations include an overview of the history of the Crow Peace Delegation, a discussion on issues in the Medicine Crow drawings and Red Star’s project, a conversation on Crow identity and resilience through the arts, and a musical performance focusing on traditional Crow songs.

MSU BILLINGS NEWS SERVICES - Montana State University Billings’ Library and the Northcutt Steele Gallery will host a free series of presentations and community conversations in conjunction with an art exhibition at the gallery and an exhibition of historical materials. The series, “The 1880 Crow Delegation to D.C.: Cultural Identity, Representation, and Legacy,” responds to an exhibition by contemporary Crow/Apsáalooke artist Wendy Red Star, which will be on display in the Northcutt Steele Gallery October 20 through December 1. This project is being supported by Humanities Montana with additional support provided by Northcutt Steele Gallery, MSUB Library, MSUB Foundation, MSUB Department of Art, and MSUB American Indian Outreach. Curated and coordinated by MSUB art history faculty and gallery director, Dr. Leanne Gilbertson, the series features presentations by and conversations with local, regional, and national humanities scholars and artists exploring Native American art, experience, cultural identity, and representation. The show has been a labor of love for Gilbertson, who has been bringing the show’s many pieces together for two years. “I was looking for a contemporary Crow artist to feature and came across Wendy’s work. I reached out to her and was thrilled when she responded,” Gilbertson said. “When she was back for the Crow Fair two summers ago we discovered she was working with the Barstow (Ledger Drawings) and the Portland Art Museum to commission plush (toys) based off the drawings.” The ledger drawings will be discussed during Dr. C. Adrian Heidenreich’s lecture, which opens the series. He is an MSUB professor emeritus of Native American Studies and Anthropology. In 1880 six Crow leaders, Peelatchiwaaxpáash/Old Crow (Raven), Iichíilachkash/Long Elk, Alaxchiiaahush/Plenty Coups, Bia Eélisaash/ Large Stomach Woman (Pregnant Woman) aka Two Belly, Déaxitchish/Pretty Eagle, and Peelatchiwaaxpáash/Chief Medicine Crow (Raven) were selected as delegates to meet with government officials in Washington, D.C. The Crow leaders, accompanied by U.S. government agents and interpreters went from the Crow Agency, then located in Absarokee, Montana, riding stagecoaches and

Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument

Courtesy of www.visitmt.com Located in southeastern Montana, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument memorializes the site of the Battle of the Little Bighorn which took place on June 25-26, 1876 between the United States Seventh Cavalry Regiment led by Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer, and the Sioux and Cheyenne under the political and spiritual leadership of Sitting Bull. The Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument was originally named Custer Battlefield National Monument. President George H.W. Bush renamed the site on December 10, 1991. It is now representative of those who were in the battle, Native Americans and the 7th Cavalry. A visitor center and museum contains exhibits relating to the 1876 Battle of Little Bighorn in which a total of 263 US Cavalrymen, of the regiments 650 men, were

killed in action by Sioux and Northern Cheyenne warriors. Lieutenant Colonel G.A. Custer was killed leading a contingent of 209 men. The Museum features exhibits of the history of the battle, Custer, weapons, archaeology, Plains Indian life, and a walking tour with interpretive markers. It is wheelchair accessible. Adjoining the visitor center is Custer National Cemetery, which includes interments from abandoned frontier military posts, the world wars, Korea and Vietnam. A 4.5 mile self-guiding tour road connects two separate battlefields, the Custer Battlefield and the RenoBenteen Battlefield. Handicapped parking is located at these two locations and at the visitor center. Ranger programs are scheduled throughout the summer, and bus tours of the battlefield operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. During the off-season a

17-minute documentary film is shown at the visitor center. Additional information can be found at the the Friends of the Little

Bighorn Battlefield’s website, www. friendslittlebighorn.com.

Hidden western treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, homesteading, antique firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region. Charting the New Frontier New as of 2014 is “Charting The New Frontier: An Exhibit of Mapping and Surveying the Yellowstone Valley.” In this exhibit history buffs will find a timeline of maps that date from 1778 to 1927 detailing railroad development, mining, fur trade, settlement and exploration. The maps are printed in a high quality, fine art form by Kim Lugthart of Artful History Reproductions in Missoula, MT. The original maps are on loan from William Cole of Cole Law Firm in Billings. Visitors will also find antique surveying equipment with descriptions on loan from Selby’s in Billings. Cattle Drives of Yesteryear A J.K. Ralston original painting, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s (YCM) authentic chuckwagon exhibit. It is a trueto-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they brought west. Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone

River valley from Idaho and Oregon by Charles Yegen in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service to Billings opened access to eastern markets. The pilot wagon had to be driven by a seasoned guide, often old trappers, explorers, and men who had been in country and knew the trails. Behind the guide came the chuckwagon, driven by the cook. The cook worked out of a converted freight wagon built to house supplies and kitchen tools. Behind the chuckwagon was the bed wagon, piled high with quilts and treated canvas, the forerunners of today’s camping gear. Then came the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. A cattle drive could cover about 5 miles per day. Native American Collection Yellowstone County Museum is the kind of museum that tells the stories of the people and places, tools, art, and triumphs and heartache of the early residents, both Native American and settlers, who populated the Yellowstone Valley. The displays are considered some of best of its kind in the state. The museum enjoys expansive space around the building. The patio affords a spectacular view of the Yellowstone Valley. The museum gift shop is full

of Native American reproductions and books of Yellowstone Valley topics. The Yellowstone County Museum is located in the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the

roundabout through the airport and loop around. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256`6811. Free admission.
