THIS GUIDE HAS BEEN CREATED TO GIVE YOU INSPIRATION AS YOU CYCLE ACROSS OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTY. FROM ITS TRANQUIL NATIONAL PARKS TO ITS BUSTLING TOWNS AND VILLAGES, YORKSHIRE HAS IT ALL. A GLORIOUS TWO DAYS IN JULY 2014 SAW US TURN OUR DREAMS INTO REALITY WITH THE HOSTING OF ‘THE GRANDEST OF GRAND DÉPARTS’ OF THE TOUR DE FRANCE. SINCE THEN, YORKSHIRE HAS FULLY EMBRACED ALL THINGS CYCLING AND HAS CEMENTED ITS REPUTATION AS A WORLD-CLASS DESTINATION FOR RIDERS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD. SIR GARY VERITY, WELCOME TO YORKSHIRE

THE HOME OF CYCLING 04

Yorkshire is now widely regarded as the home of cycling within the UK and our county has everything a rider could wish for. If you’d prefer to watch the pros in action, the Tour de Yorkshire allows you to see the world’s best riders in action. We hosted ‘the Grandest of Grand Departs’ when the Tour de France visited the county back in 2014, and we’re proud to be hosting the UCI Road World Championships in 2019.

FOCUS ON DALBY FOREST

SPEND YOUR DAYS SPEEDING AROUND DALBY FOREST. THIS HEAVILY FORESTED AREA OF THE NORTH YORK MOORS NATIONAL PARK OFFERS OFF-ROAD BIKING TRAILS FOR ALL LEVELS FROM KIDS AND BEGINNERS UP TO PROFESSIONALS. IN 2010 AND 2011, THE FOREST HOSTED THE MOUNTAIN BIKE WORLD CUP. MUCH OF THE ORIGINAL ROUTE – WITH STEEP, TECHNICAL CLIMBS AND WHITE-KNUCKLE DESCENTS, STILL REMAINS. AT THE OTHER END OF THE ADRENALINE SCALE IS THE FLATTER ELLERBURN TRAIL, PERFECT FOR THOSE WHO LIKE IT A LITTLE SLOWER. THE VARIETY OF TERRAIN AND THE BEAUTY OF THE FOREST IS ASTOUNDING: UP TWISTING SINGLETRACK TRAILS THROUGH SHADY WOODS, DOWN STEEP HILLSIDE SWITCHBACKS, ROUND HIGH BANKED CORNERS, OVER LITTLE JUMPS, AND LOTS OF LONG, DOWNHILL SECTIONS. WITH THE FIR TREES SURROUNDING YOU, IT COULD ALMOST BE THE FOOTHILLS OF THE ALPS. 09

The Grand Départ route is signposted so you can enjoy re-creating a section of the greatest cycle race in the world.

For family friendly routes there is the Airedale Greenway which runs along the Leeds Liverpool Canal. Or the Great Northern Railway Trail which, takes in a number of attractions throughout Bradford District. The disused railway tracks are an excellent way to safely enjoy the countryside and see the natural beauty of the area. 55
