David Hockney’s Yorkshire David Hockney OM, considered one of the world’s greatest living artists, was born in Bradford in July 1937. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School and Bradford School of Art before going to the Royal College of Art, London from 1959-62 where he made his name. He first visited Los Angeles in 1964 where he lived intermittently until the mid-1970s when it became his more permanent home.

It was his regular visits in the 1990s to his mother and sister who lived in Bridlington that re-introduced Hockney to the East Yorkshire landscape that he had first known as a schoolboy working on a Wolds farm in the 1950s.

The Pipe & Glass – South Dalton

It was at the wish of his friend Jonathan Silver, the founder of Salts Mill, Saltaire, that Hockney first painted the Yorkshire Wolds in 1997. He returned to the Wolds in 20023, first sketching, then experimenting with watercolours, before working in the open air to produce a series of increasingly large oil paintings that led to the massive ‘Bigger Trees near Warter’ in 2007, which he presented to the Tate Gallery. Many of these works and the paintings, iPhone and iPad drawings and multi-camera films that followed were displayed at the much-acclaimed exhibition that filled the Royal Academy, London, in January-April 2012, before going on to proclaim the wonders of the East Yorkshire landscape in Bilbao, Spain and Cologne, Germany.

The Road across the Wolds The David Hockney Trail Welcome to this journey through David Hockney’s East Yorkshire landscape.

It is based on the road from Bridlington to York that Hockney travelled almost daily for three months in 1997 when visiting his seriously ill friend Jonathan Silver at Salts Mill. It was as a result of these journeys that Hockney painted his first East Yorkshire landscapes including The Road across the Wolds and Garrowby Hill.

Take the next road on the left up to Fridaythorpe and back onto the A166. Now go west and explore the landscape and villages to the south of the main road. Huggate is where David Hockney as a schoolboy worked in the fields in the summers of 1952-53.

Millington is reached via the very long and curving Millington Dale, and Warter is where the Yorkshire Wolds Heritage Centre provides a great introduction to the landscape and history of the Wolds. The remarkable 50-canvas ‘Bigger Trees near Warter’ was painted in the open air, nearly 2 miles east of the village.

It is an open landscape and the trees, alone or in small plantations, stand out silhouetted against the sky. Hockney has shown that this landscape has a beauty all through the year.

Starting from Stamford Bridge, 8 miles east of York, continue eastwards along the A166, a Roman road, that takes you up Garrowby Hill. Near the top look back and you will see the view over the Vale of York that Hockney painted from memory. Go left and down to the isolated and charming village of Thixendale, a good place to access the Yorkshire Wolds Way about a mile and a half to the east on the road to Fimber, just before a road junction, are the ‘Three trees near Thixendale’ the subject of a whole series of paintings.

The Pipe & Glass – South Dalton

It was at the wish of his friend Jonathan Silver, the founder of Salts Mill, Saltaire, that Hockney first painted the Yorkshire Wolds in 1997. He returned to the Wolds in 20023, first sketching, then experimenting with watercolours, before working in the open air to produce a series of increasingly large oil paintings that led to the massive ‘Bigger Trees near Warter’ in 2007, which he presented to the Tate Gallery. Many of these works and the paintings, iPhone and iPad drawings and multi-camera films that followed were displayed at the much-acclaimed exhibition that filled the Royal Academy, London, in January-April 2012, before going on to proclaim the wonders of the East Yorkshire landscape in Bilbao, Spain and Cologne, Germany.

David Hockney’s Yorkshire David Hockney OM, considered one of the world’s greatest living artists, was born in Bradford in July 1937. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School and Bradford School of Art before going to the Royal College of Art, London from 1959-62 where he made his name. He first visited Los Angeles in 1964 where he lived intermittently until the mid-1970s when it became his more permanent home.

It was his regular visits in the 1990s to his mother and sister who lived in Bridlington that re-introduced Hockney to the East Yorkshire landscape that he had first known as a schoolboy working on a Wolds farm in the 1950s.

It was at the wish of his friend Jonathan Silver, the founder of Salts Mill, Saltaire, that Hockney first painted the Yorkshire Wolds in 1997. He returned to the Wolds in 20023, first sketching, then experimenting with watercolours, before working in the open air to produce a series of increasingly large oil paintings that led to the massive ‘Bigger Trees near Warter’ in 2007, which he presented to the Tate Gallery. Many of these works and the paintings, iPhone and iPad drawings and multi-camera films that followed were displayed at the much-acclaimed exhibition that filled the Royal Academy, London, in January-April 2012, before going on to proclaim the wonders of the East Yorkshire landscape in Bilbao, Spain and Cologne, Germany.

The Road across the Wolds The David Hockney Trail Welcome to this journey through David Hockney’s East Yorkshire landscape.

It is based on the road from Bridlington to York that Hockney travelled almost daily for three months in 1997 when visiting his seriously ill friend Jonathan Silver at Salts Mill. It was as a result of these journeys that Hockney painted his first East Yorkshire landscapes including The Road across the Wolds and Garrowby Hill.

Take the next road on the left up to Fridaythorpe and back onto the A166. Now go west and explore the landscape and villages to the south of the main road. Huggate is where David Hockney as a schoolboy worked in the fields in the summers of 1952-53.

Millington is reached via the very long and curving Millington Dale, and Warter is where the Yorkshire Wolds Heritage Centre provides a great introduction to the landscape and history of the Wolds. The remarkable 50-canvas ‘Bigger Trees near Warter’ was painted in the open air, nearly 2 miles east of the village.

In the west of the county is the World Heritage Site of Saltaire which is home to Salts Mill, the final destination for Hockney’s journey across the Wolds.

Some of the actual locations for his paintings and drawings are identified, but what David Hockney wants you to do is to really look at the landscape; a cultivated landscape brought alive by the changing seasons. It is an open landscape and the trees, alone or in small plantations, stand out silhouetted against the sky. Hockney has shown that this landscape has a beauty all through the year.

Starting from Stamford Bridge, 8 miles east of York, continue eastwards along the A166, a Roman road, that takes you up Garrowby Hill. Near the top look back and you will see the view over the Vale of York that Hockney painted from memory. Go left and down to the isolated and charming village of Thixendale, a good place to access the Yorkshire Wolds Way about a mile and a half to the east on the road to Fimber, just before a road junction, are the ‘Three trees near Thixendale’ the subject of a whole series of paintings.

Hockney’s Yorkshire spans the width of our great county from his ancestors’ humble beginnings as agricultural labourers in East Yorkshire, to his childhood in Bradford, his long association with the Silver family at Salts Mill in Saltaire and the world famous East Yorkshire landscapes that have captured the hearts of millions of people around the globe.

Fridaythorpe to Warter

To appreciate Hockney’s Yorkshire Wolds you have to leave the main road and explore, as he has done, the many narrow by-roads that take you through a peaceful countryside with rolling hills, hidden dry valleys, secluded villages and big skies. Everywhere there are groups of trees, brought to life by Hockney, and the hedgerows that for a short time in early summer explode into glorious hawthorn blossom.

Stamford Bridge to Thixendale

Welcome to the home of David Hockney, one of the world’s greatest living artists.

From Warter go via North Dalton, Tibthorpe and Wetwang to Sledmere, a favourite village of Hockney which he painted in 1997. He is a frequent visitor to Sledmere House. From Sledmere follow the Bridlington Road, the B1253 for about three miles then turn right to Langtoft and on to Kilham, location for the series of tunnel paintings and films. From here go direct to Rudston, with its famous monolith, or follow Woldgate, a prehistoric routeway that runs from Kilham to Bridlington, which is the scene of many paintings including ‘Winter Timber’. Nearby is Burton Agnes Hall where Hockney painted scenes in the walled garden.

David Hockney’s Yorkshire David Hockney OM, considered one of the world’s greatest living artists, was born in Bradford in July 1937. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School and Bradford School of Art before going to the Royal College of Art, London from 1959-62 where he made his name. He first visited Los Angeles in 1964 where he lived intermittently until the mid-1970s when it became his more permanent home.

It was his regular visits in the 1990s to his mother and sister who lived in Bridlington that re-introduced Hockney to the East Yorkshire landscape that he had first known as a schoolboy working on a Wolds farm in the 1950s.

David Hockney’s Yorkshire David Hockney OM, considered one of the world’s greatest living artists, was born in Bradford in July 1937. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School and Bradford School of Art before going to the Royal College of Art, London from 1959-62 where he made his name. He first visited Los Angeles in 1964 where he lived intermittently until the mid-1970s when it became his more permanent home.

It was his regular visits in the 1990s to his mother and sister who lived in Bridlington that re-introduced Hockney to the East Yorkshire landscape that he had first known as a schoolboy working on a Wolds farm in the 1950s.

The Pipe & Glass – South Dalton

It was at the wish of his friend Jonathan Silver, the founder of Salts Mill, Saltaire, that Hockney first painted the Yorkshire Wolds in 1997. He returned to the Wolds in 20023, first sketching, then experimenting with watercolours, before working in the open air to produce a series of increasingly large oil paintings that led to the massive ‘Bigger Trees near Warter’ in 2007, which he presented to the Tate Gallery. Many of these works and the paintings, iPhone and iPad drawings and multi-camera films that followed were displayed at the much-acclaimed exhibition that filled the Royal Academy, London, in January-April 2012, before going on to proclaim the wonders of the East Yorkshire landscape in Bilbao, Spain and Cologne, Germany.

David Hockney’s Yorkshire David Hockney OM, considered one of the world’s greatest living artists, was born in Bradford in July 1937. He was educated at Bradford Grammar School and Bradford School of Art before going to the Royal College of Art, London from 1959-62 where he made his name. He first visited Los Angeles in 1964 where he lived intermittently until the mid-1970s when it became his more permanent home.

It was his regular visits in the 1990s to his mother and sister who lived in Bridlington that re-introduced Hockney to the East Yorkshire landscape that he had first known as a schoolboy working on a Wolds farm in the 1950s.

The Pipe & Glass – South Dalton

It was at the wish of his friend Jonathan Silver, the founder of Salts Mill, Saltaire, that Hockney first painted the Yorkshire Wolds in 1997. He returned to the Wolds in 20023, first sketching, then experimenting with watercolours, before working in the open air to produce a series of increasingly large oil paintings that led to the massive ‘Bigger Trees near Warter’ in 2007, which he presented to the Tate Gallery. Many of these works and the paintings, iPhone and iPad drawings and multi-camera films that followed were displayed at the much-acclaimed exhibition that filled the Royal Academy, London, in January-April 2012, before going on to proclaim the wonders of the East Yorkshire landscape in Bilbao, Spain and Cologne, Germany.
