What is the role of temporary uses? How are they implemented and why? How have the temporary uses shaped the Northern Quarter?
Temporary use has become a more common strategy in urban planning and development, especially in times of uncertainty and needs of revitalisation. This has also been the case for Northern Quarter. With temporary occupancy at the WTC, the area was supposed to become lively and diverse, a test site and an experimental district. Was this the case?
This booklet provides a deep dive and a critical analysis of the history and development of temporary use in Brussels, through to the North Quarter and WTC. It analyses the process and outcomes of temporary use and draws conclusions and lessons to be adapted in the future planning. The scope provides objective research on the topic with a personal commentary overlay.
