Miami Outdoors The Real South Florida! Everglades National Park (Map I-1, Q-1 and U-1) is the third largest national park in the lower 48 states, the country’s largest subtropical wilderness, a World Heritage Site, International Biosphere Reserve, and a Wetland of International Importance. This River of Grass is home to wading birds, alligators, fish, turtles, snakes and other wildlife including the endangered manatee and Florida panther. The park is located on the southern tip of Florida and spans nearly 1.5-million acres. Being so large, it is accessible from several different areas in South Florida. Entrances and Visitor Centers:

• Ernest Coe Visitor Center is open daily, from approximately 9am-5pm; main entrance to the park is open 24-hours a day. Features educational displays, informational brochures and an adjoining bookstore. Popular walking trails begin a short drive from the center. At 40001 State Rd. 9336, Homestead, 305-242-7700. There is a $10/car ($5/walkers or cyclists) entrance fee, good for seven consecutive days at any Everglades park. • Flamingo Visitor Center is open daily, from approximately 8am-4:30pm. It is the only visitor center not accessible from an outside entrance, and located 38-miles (about one hour’s drive) into the park from the Ernest Coe Visitor Center. Features backcountry permits, campground facilities, a public boat ramp, hiking trails and canoeing. Houseboat, canoe, kayak, bicycle rentals and boat tours available at the marina store. Information at 239-695-2945. • Shark Valley is open daily, 9:15am5:15pm. Features a guided tram tour, paved roads for bicycling, bicycle rentals and two short walking trails (one disabled accessible). Shark Valley is located at 36000 SW 8 St., Miami, 305-221-8776. There is a $10/car ($5/walkers or cyclists) entrance fee, which is good for seven consecutive days at any Everglades park. • Gulf Coast Visitor Center is open mid-November to mid-April, 8am-4:30pm, and mid-April to mid-November, 9am-4:30pm. The Gulf Coast Visitor Center serves as the gateway for exploring Ten Thousand Islands, a maze of mangrove islands and waterways. The
