WHO WERE COLLINS & FLAGLER ANYWAY? A Brief Guide to Miami Street Names

Walking & Art Gallery Tours

Collins Avenue: John Collins was a farmer and land developer who built the first wooden bridge from Miami to Miami Beach in 1913.

u

DOWNTOWN HOLLYWOOD ART WALK

Third Saturday of the month, 7pm-10pm. Look over the shoulder of an artist painting and visit the art galleries and businesses showcasing local, regional and international artwork in historic Downtown Hollywood. Map A-13, then north. Info at 954-924-2980. www.visithollywoodfl.org

Flagler Street: Henry Flager’s East Coast Railway made Miami possible. Before 1896, there was no easy way to move goods and people in and out of Miami. The railroad arrived in April of 1896, and Miami was incorporated in May. Flagler is known as the “Father of Miami” and his name graces many places in South Florida.

u

ART DECO DISTRICT WALKING TOURS

Daily, 10:30am; additional tour Thursdays, 6:30pm. This 90-minute tour provides an introduction to the Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern (“MiMo”) building styles found within the Miami Beach Architectural Historic District. Tours depart from the Art Deco Welcome Center, 1001 Ocean Dr., Miami Beach, 305-672-2014. Map I-13. www.mdpl.org

Biscayne Blvd.: Named for Biscayne Bay. Brickell Avenue: William and Mary Brickell owned a trading post on the south side of the Miami River in the late-1800s. Everything south of the river was called Brickell for many years. Julia Tuttle Causeway: Many consider Julia Tuttle to be the “Mother of Miami.” It was she who persuaded – badgered, some say – Henry Flagler to expand his rail line 65 miles south from Palm Beach to Miami.

u

COCONUT GROVE GALLERY WALK

First Saturday of the month, 7pm-10pm. Coconut Grove is Miami’s original arts district! Visit several renowned art galleries and check out exhibitions by local, professional and emerging artists! Hors d’oeuvres, drinks, live music and performances at some galleries. Map K-8. Info at 305-461-5506. www.coconutgrove.com

Rickenbacker Causeway: Named after WW1 ace pilot Eddie Rickenbacker. He later became the president of Eastern Air Lines, which was based in Miami. Killian Drive: Named for pioneer Dan Killian, who had a country store south of what is now Coral Gables, and was responsible for the first schools, streetlights and churches in this area.

u

WYNWOOD ART WALK

Second Saturday of the month, 7pm-11pm. Tour galleries in the Wynwood Arts District, a trendy, artistic neighborhood that is home to more than 70 art spaces and galleries. Parking is best before 7pm, as lots and metered street parking fill up quickly. The main area of the Wynwood Art Walk is between NE 20 Street and NE 36 Street, and from NW 2 Avenue to NE 2 Avenue, Miami. Map H-10. www.wynwoodartwalk.com

Don Shula Expressway: Don Shula is the coach of the Miami Dolphins to many; no matter who else has held the job since his retirement in 1997. Shula holds the coaching record for most wins in the NFL (347), and coached the 1972 Miami Dolphins, the only team in NFL history to play a perfect 16-0 season and win the Super Bowl. Ives Dairy Road & Milam Dairy Road: At one time, these actually went to – you guessed it – dairy farms! Now, Ives Dairy Road leads out to Sun Life Stadium, where the Miami Dolphins play. Milam Dairy Road goes to the city of Miami Lakes. The Milam family name still graces their chain of local upscale grocery stores, Milam’s.

u

CORAL GABLES GALLERY NIGHT

MAPS

Finding your way

T

ake a moment to look at our map on pages 40-41 and get familiar with the major Miami roadways. Streets and Terraces generally run east-west. Avenues, Places, Roads and Courts are aligned north-south. But look carefully in other areas that have their own street systems: Hialeah, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, Opa Locka, Key Biscayne and Miami Beach. Miami is divided into four sections, with Flagler Street marking the north and south sectors, and Miami Avenue dividing the city into east and west.

North-South

• I-95 is the major north-south expressway that provides access to all of South Florida, and continues all the way north to Maine! • U.S.1 is a main thoroughfare throughout South Florida. From downtown Miami to NE 213 Street in northern Miami-Dade County, it is called Biscayne Blvd. In parts of Broward County, it is called Federal Hwy. Going south, U.S.1 continues to the Florida Keys. • Florida’s Turnpike extends north to Orlando and Central Florida from State Road 836 in the southwest part of Miami. The Homestead Extension of the Turnpike is located in the western part of the county and continues south until it merges with U.S.1 in Homestead. This is a toll road; $1.25 eastbound, $1 with SunPass. • From Kendall to the northern part of Miami, State Road 826 (Palmetto Expressway) runs north-south, then runs east-west, connecting with I-95 at the Golden Glades Interchange in North Miami. • A1A (called Collins Avenue in Miami Beach) runs north-south for 52 miles, paralleling Florida’s beaches along the east coast.

East-West

• State Road 836 (Dolphin Expressway) is the major east-west expressway connecting Florida’s Turnpike (Homestead Extension) to State Road 826, I-95 and Miami Beach via I-395. Toll: $2.25 eastbound; $2 with SunPass. • State Road 112 leads to/from Miami International Airport, to/from I-95, and to Miami Beach via I-195. Toll: $1.25 eastbound; $1 with SunPass. • State Road 826 (Palmetto Expressway) runs east-west, connects with I-95 and continues east to the beaches. • Gratigny Parkway runs east-west between the Palmetto Expressway and NW 32 Ave. Toll: $1 with SunPass. • Eight causeways link the mainland and the beaches: • Rickenbacker to Key Biscayne; Toll: $1.75 (eastbound) • I-395 (MacArthur Causeway) to/from 5 Street • Venetian Causeway to Dade Blvd.; Toll: $1.50 • I-195 (Julia Tuttle Causeway) to/from 41 Street • Kennedy Causeway to/from 79 Street • Broad Causeway to/from Bay Harbor and Bal Harbour; Toll: $1 • Sunny Isles Causeway to/from 163 Street • William Lehman Causeway to/from 192 Street

TAXI FARES Flat rate fares: Miami-Dade County has created flat rate fares for trips between Miami International Airport and certain areas. Prices include tolls and $2 surcharge by the airport and seaport authorities, but not gratuity. Taxis are available only on the Arrivals Level at the airport.

Non-flat rate fares from the Airport (Estimates): South Coconut Grove $21.70 Gables by the Sea/South Gables $33.70 Downtown Coral Gables/Miracle Mile $19 Dadeland $31.30 University of Miami $21.70 Key Biscayne $41 Homestead North $74.50 South $79.30 Central Downtown Miami $21.70 North (not Miami Beach) 79 Street $26.50 Select Airport-area hotels (Zones A & B) $10-$14

Port of Miami/Cruise Ships $24 Miami Beach • Government Cut to 63 Street (this includes all locations, with the exceptions of Watson Island, Biscayne Island, Hibiscus Island, Star Island, Palm Island, San Marco Island, San Marino Island, Di Lido Island and Rivo Alto Island) $32 • Mid-Beach area (63 Street-87 Terrace) $37 • North Beach area (includes Surfside, Indian Creek Village, Bal Harbour) $43 • Sunny Isles to Golden Beach $52 • Key Biscayne $41 • Coral Gables $14-$19 Taxi (Wheelchair accessible): Metro Taxi Super Yellow Cab Yellow Cab Central Cab Flamingo Taxi

• The meter starts at $2.50, with a $2.40 per mile charge. Passengers pay $0.40 for each additional 1/6-mile. Trips from the airport or seaport start $2 higher with a surcharge imposed by the airport and seaport authorities. • $0.40/minute ($24/hour) waiting charge. Meter fares do not include wait time, which vary according to time of day, weather and traffic. • Drivers can add tolls to the meter fares. Those additions will be at the discounted SunPass rate. • Due to rising gas prices, a $1 fuel surcharge is now added to every trip.

Balance protection is available in case of loss or theft. The card has an initial $2 charge. Purchase by calling the EASY Card Center at 786-469-5151. The 7 Day Pass offers unlimited access to all Miami-Dade County public transportation for seven consecutive days for $29.25.

For express bus service from the Miami International Airport to Miami Beach at a bargain price, check out the Airport Flyer (Bus Route 150), which departs from the bus bay area of the Miami International Airport Metrorail station, and runs daily from 6am-11:30pm. This express service offers free Wi-Fi for the ride and plenty of space for luggage. Fare: $2.65 each way.

For detailed information and schedules, call 305-891-3131 (TTY: 305-499-8971) or visit www.miamidade.gov/transit The Port of Miami Tunnel is an underwater passageway that facilitates travel to the Port of Miami from the MacArthur Causeway (I-395). The tunnel provides direct access between the seaport and two major highways, I-395 and I-95, and serves as a direct point of entry to the Port of Miami. Fare: Free.

On Miami Beach, try the South Beach Local (Bus Route 123), for an easy way to get around! It runs every 13-20 minutes daily. See page 46 for routes and schedule. Fare: 25¢ per ride. Metrorail, Miami-Dade County’s 25-mile, elevated rapid-transit system, runs from the Kendall area in the southern end of the county north to the city of Medley. Its 23 stations provide connections to major businesses and cultural and shopping centers. Riders also can transfer to Tri-Rail at the Tri-Rail Metrorail station and travel north to Broward and Palm Beach Counties. Metrorail riders must use an EASY Card, as faregates do not accept cash. With the opening of this line in July 2012, Miami joined the ranks of other major metropolitan areas around the world with rapid transit connections to the airport!

SunPass offers a convenient, pre-paid option for most tolls in Florida, at a discounted rate. Home to America’s only living barrier coral reef, the Florida Keys stretch more than 200 miles; beginning with Virginia Key near Miami, and ending with the uninhabited Dry Tortugas.

Beach Resort and Marina (Mile Marker 84), selfproclaimed home of the Rum Runner cocktail. No visit to the Keys is complete without venturing all the way down US 1 to Key West. With Ernest Hemingway’s six-toed cats, the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum (complete with treasure from sunken ships!), the Southernmost Point in the continental United States, the adventures of Duval Street nightlife and more, Key West is not to be missed! Key West offers plentiful opportunities to dive, snorkel, sail and laze around too. Key West is also home to both the southernmost winery and the southernmost brewery in the United States. Watch the sun rise on one side of Key West and watch the sun set on the other – with so much to do in between.

In between is a chain of islands populated by equally colorful people, flora and fauna. To live in the Keys is to be a character – in the best way possible. Artists, musicians, fishermen and writers, from the famous to the infamous, have made their homes in the Florida Keys. Key Largo, the largest Key, is famous for the 1948 movie of the same name, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Key Largo has beautiful resorts and is close to both John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (102601 Overseas Hwy.) and the Everglades, making it an ideal spot for kayaking, snorkeling and diving.

Throughout the Keys, great food, often featuring fresh, local seafood, abounds. Don’t miss the state parks, campgrounds and these popular points of interest: Theater of the Sea (Mile Marker 84.5), Crane Point Museum & Nature Center (Mile Marker 50) and Bahia Honda State Park (Mile Marker 37).

Moving south, Islamorada, known as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World, is the perfect place to launch a sport fishing trip and take advantage of the plentiful game fish off its shores. The less energetic can just lounge around at the World Famous Tiki Bar at Holiday Isle at Postcard Inn

Key Biscayne’s beaches rank among the nation’s finest, and their relatively calm waters make them a good choice for the family. Take the Rickenbacker Causeway exit from I-95 ($1.75 toll). Hobie Beach, located along the causeway, offers windsurfing, sailboard and sailboat rentals, but actual beach space is limited. Virginia Key Beach is also located at Rickenbacker Causeway, on Virginia Key between the mainland and Key Biscayne. Concessions, lifeguards, restrooms, picnic tables and showers are available. u

SAFE SUNNING TIPS

South Florida’s sun is inviting, but it’s easy to get too much of a good thing. Here are some tips to help you enjoy the sun without getting burned. These guidelines are based on a scale that assigns a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) to measure the degree to which a substance will block the ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn. It is important to use a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays.

SURFSIDE

Two of the standout attractions of the quiet, family-oriented Surfside neighborhood are the shops and the picturesque secluded beach that is bordered by a path through the sand dunes. Rejuvenated hotels and new luxury condominiums in the Town of Surfside are changing the style of Collins Avenue, but Harding Avenue retains the feel of an oldstyle Main Street with small shops and bistros. Located between 94 and 96 Streets on Harding Avenue. Additional info at 305-864-0722. www.visitsurfsidefla.com u

DANIA BEACH

Located at Dania Beach Boulevard and Beach Road in Dania, located just north of Hollywood. Concessions, lifeguards, restrooms, picnic tables and showers available. For more information, contact the City of Dania Beach’s Parks and Recreation Department at 954-925-6935. www.visitdaniabeach.com

At the end of Crandon Blvd. is beautiful Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park (305-361-5811), home to the historic Cape Florida Lighthouse, the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County. Note: Children under 8 not permitted on lighthouse. Cape Florida has beautiful beaches, bicycle trails, boat rentals, fishing, lifeguards and Boater’s Grill restaurant. Bike, beach chair and umbrella rentals available. Leashed pets welcome, but not permitted on the beach. www.miamidade.gov/parks u

JOHN U. LLOYD BEACH STATE PARK

This state park provides an abundance of recreational activities including canoeing, swimming, boating and picnicking. For those interested in South Florida’s underwater beauty, this park has one of the easiest and most interesting shore dives in the area. Open daily, 8am-sunset. Admission is $6 per car of 2-8 people; $4 for 1 person in car; $2 per person for walk/bike-ins. Located at the northern end of Ocean Drive, a quarter-mile north of Dania Beach Blvd., at 6503 N. Ocean Dr., Dania Beach, 954-923-2833. www.floridastateparks.org

• For those fair-skinned or prone to burning, use a sunscreen with an SPF rating of at least 30. Even if you are tan, protection is still necessary. • The sun is strongest between 11am and 2pm, but burning can occur even in the early morning or late afternoon hours, especially during the summer, and also even in shaded areas. Use extra protection during peak hours.

HOLLYWOOD BEACH

Hollywood’s miles of beautiful beaches are fringed by boutique shopping, dining, nightlife and the charming historic district. The beach stretches six miles and includes a two-mile, 1920s-era Hollywood Beach Broadwalk with numerous shops, cafés, restaurants and bars. Visitors can utilize the convenient Hollywood Trolley service to go from Hollywood Beach

• Even on overcast days or in the shade, the sun’s rays can still burn. Protection is advised. • Children are more vulnerable to damage from the sun than adults, so they need waterproof sunscreen with a higher SPF. 66

MIAMI OUTDOORS

• The sun’s rays reflect off water, increasing sun exposure. When swimming, choose a waterproof sunscreen that retains its SPF level even after 90-minutes in the water. • Stay hydrated while at the beach; saltwater leeches moisture from skin. Drink plenty of water to replenish fluids, even if you’re not sweating, thirsty or hot. u

SWIMMING SAFETY TIPS FROM THE MIAMI BEACH PATROL OCEAN RESCUE

• Always swim in a guarded area. Stay within the swim area boundaries. Don’t swim where surfers are active.

• Pay attention to posted flags. There are flags posted on all lifeguard towers in Miami Beach. • Rip currents or riptides are strong currents that can carry even the most experienced swimmer out to sea. If you get caught in a rip current, don’t panic. Swim parallel to the shoreline until you’re out of the rip current, then swim towards shore. For additional information about beach safety, please contact Miami Beach Patrol Ocean Rescue at 305-673-7714 or visit the website. www.miamibeachoceanrescue.com

Swim. Snorkel. Paddleboard. Dive. Float. Fish. Fly! Soar above the water suspended by a parachute or on a flyboard. Plunge below the surface and explore the reefs, or catch your own dinner! While Miami and Miami Beach are recognized for their nightlife and international cuisine, there is partying and feasting of a different sort taking place on and below the surface of our tropical waters! A dramatic yet peaceful underwater world patiently awaits its visitors: a world thriving with colorful marine life that frequently contrasts with the stillness of artificial reefs in and around which they so often congregate.

MIAMI PARASAIL 305-345-4104

In 1981, Miami-Dade County initiated an artificial reef program, and in 1998 established the South Beach Underwater Park, located 200 yards east of the beach between 1 and 5 Streets.

The surface also provides water recreation: Parasail from several locations along the beach or try a ride on an inflatable banana boat towed by a jet ski.

The purpose was to expand the fish habitat while providing near-shore snorkeling and diving opportunities. One such opportunity, a 22-ton concrete margarita bar rests in 20-feet of water, just 100 yards east of Nikki Beach Club. Deep sea fishing opportunities abound in Miami. Hire a charter boat and venture out into the open ocean to catch everything from marlin to mahi mahi and swordfish to snapper! Scuba divers have a variety of sites in deeper water, from the Tortuga, an intact freighter sitting upright in 110-feet of water to a pair of army tanks sitting in less than 50-feet of water east of the Fontainebleau Miami Beach hotel on 44 Street. Underwater Miami lives up to its reputation as the “Wreck-reational Capital of the World!”

If tranquility and personal power are more your style, single or double kayaks and canoes are available from various watersports rental locations along the beach and bay. Power boat rentals and tours are also available. The roar of the engines, the wind in your face, the warmth of the sun come together for an exciting adventure! If the wind is your choice of power, Miami is one of the best places in the world to sail. South Biscayne Bay (Biscayne National Park) is a protected body of water that is home to the only living tropical reef in the continental U.S.

DINING OUT

South Florida Food Primer The food of South Florida is like nowhere else! It is a wonderful mix of the foreign and the familiar, the magical and the mundane, and there is something for everyone here. Known as “Floribbean,” this flavorful combination of Cuban, Southern U.S., Spanish and other Caribbean flavors, characterized by lots of seafood, tropical fruits and spices, make up the cuisine in the Melting Pot city of Miami! The list below gives some information about the unique ingredients that go into the food here, and give it that unique Miami spice. wRice & Beans: Whether it is white rice or yellow rice (which gets its color from saffron, the world’s most expensive spice), rice is a staple in Floribbean cooking. It is frequently served with black beans (Cuban), pigeon peas (Jamaican) or red beans (Cajun, other Caribbean). Together, rice and beans are a complete protein – and a delicious one from the stock, onions, garlic and chilies usually simmered into the beans.

wMango: Mangos are everywhere in South Florida! There is even an annual International Mango Festival held in Miami. Originally from India, mangos have spread all over the world’s tropics. Besides eaten fresh, mangos have found their way into chutneys, salsas, salads, cooked dishes, and even barbecue sauces. wYuca: This fibrous root vegetable is often served battered and fried, like a thick French fry, or boiled and doused with garlic sauce.

wStone Crabs: Native to the waters around Florida, stone crabs are a delicacy only available fresh from October to May. Fishermen remove one claw from the crab and return it to the water. The claw will regenerate to full size in about a year. Claws are usually served chilled, often with a mustard sauce. Stone crab claws were first successfully prepared on Miami Beach at the world famous Joe’s Stone Crab.

wAvocado: Native Florida avocados are much larger than their California cousins, called Hass avocados, and have smooth skins instead of pebbled ones. They also stay bright green when ripe. They have a much higher water content than Hass avocados and are therefore lower in fat. They are wonderful raw on sandwiches and in salads, but do not make great guacamole! Florida avocadoes are also known as alligator pears.

wCitrus: Citrus fruits, including Key limes, oranges, tangerines, lemons and others, show up across South Florida in salads, sauces, marinades and more. Mojo Criollo, an essential Cuban marinade, is made from a zesty blend of garlic, onion and citrus fruits.

wPlantains: This banana variety is not sweet when it is still green. Green plantains, called tostones, are often served deep fried as chips or fritters and served as a side dish. Their sweet, ripe counterparts, maduros, are usually pan-fried to caramelize them and eaten as a dessert, side dish or snack.

wGrouper & Snapper: These native fish are essential to true South Florida cuisine. Depending on the restaurant, they are fried, broiled, baked, grilled or sautéed, and they appear on a multitude of menus.

wEmpanadas: There are as many kinds of empanadas (“little turnovers”) as there are islands in the Caribbean! Chicken, beef, veggie, spicy or mild, try them from a street vendor – just like a hot dog in New York.

wDolphin: It’s not Flipper! Also known as mahi mahi or dorado, dolphin are a beautiful fish that also taste wonderful. Many area restaurants have adapted and changed the name for visitors, but there are holdouts which still list mahi mahi as dolphin. (Flipper and his cousins are actually porpoises, not dolphins!)

Floribbean food is much more than what is above. Enjoy and experiment! There’s nothing else like it in the world. 74

THINGS TO DO

(Continued from page 8)

I knew Miami Beach was a very special place the first time I visited eight years ago. In addition to its beautiful surroundings, I experienced freedom in a way I hadn’t since becoming disabled.

By Helen Condzal Swar tz, M. Ed.

Leaving my hotel unescorted, with book in hand and thoughts of an espresso milling around my brain, I was overcome with a sense of joy for the long lost autonomy I was experiencing. I ventured up Miami Beach’s famous Collins Avenue in my wheelchair and everything appeared more beautiful as I realized streets could be easily crossed because of predictable and uniform ramping, audible pedestrian signals and plentiful accessible bathrooms!

Even on land Miami has so much to offer, which is why more than 50 percent of visitors return!

One of the main reasons visitors come to Miami is to enjoy the beautiful beaches. Those of us who depend on a wheelchair for mobility, know they don’t move too well in sand. Check with your hotel concierge who may be able to provide you with the rental of a beach wheelchair specifically designed for our sandy beaches. Boucher Brothers has teamed up with the City of Miami Beach to offer the Beach Wheelchair. Please call ahead to reserve one at 305-673-7714. See ad on page 65 for additional information.

The city of Miami itself hosts the exciting Food Network South Beach Food & Wine Festival (February), and the Miami International Film Festival (March) affords many opportunities to see unique films and attend question and answer sessions with celebrities, actors and directors.

This world class city has many venues for fine and performing arts, and hosts one of the two Art Basel events in the world. The Design District and Wynwood neighborhoods and ArtCenter/ South Florida (800 Lincoln Rd., Miami Beach, Map I-13) have ongoing art events and shows featuring different themes from local, national and international artists.

There is truly something for everyone in Miami, and a plethora of activities are available to those of varied physical abilities. The outdoors and watersports make the most of Miami’s beautiful surrounding waters, and some activities are even suited to the disabled traveler.

Much awareness has been brought about in recent years by a citywide event called Ability Explosion, a weeklong event in October featuring Dining in the Dark as one of its most popular events. In addition, almost every restaurant in Miami Beach is accessible for wheelchair use and many have a heightened awareness of the obstacles faced by those with vision limitations. Miami-Dade County Public Transit buses are available to take visitors around Miami Beach, downtown and to/from the airport. Simply dial 3-1-1 (TTY: 305-499-8971) to speak to a live assistant who can explain bus routes and times. A helpful and free iPhone, iPad and Android app called Miami-Dade Transit Tracker also provides bus routes, stops and times. Additional information about Miami’s public transportation can be found on pages 44-45.

At Shake-A-Leg Miami (2620 S. Bayshore Dr., Coconut Grove, 305-858-5550, Map K-8), the world’s premier adaptive and community watersports center, experience the magic of Biscayne Bay on a kayak, stand-up paddleboard, sailboat, powerboat and more! (Note: No prior boating skills required.) Fishing trips can also be arranged, or bring a picnic lunch and enjoy a waterfront view on the dock or nearby island. See special offer on page 77.

I believe Miami’s accessibility is the result of ongoing concern and deliberate planning by city government. The city has an abundance of beautiful and accessible public spaces, including an ocean walkway that goes north from South Pointe Park past 41 Street on Miami Beach. I live in what has been called one of the most accessible cities in the United States!

Programs are available for children and adults with physical and developmental challenges; liberating them from the realm of imagination, into the realm of experience! Shake-A-Leg Miami is South Florida’s “Gateway to Biscayne Bay.” 76
