WINTER TEXAN
• • • your official connection to the rio grande valley • • •
I
have to admit, I’m a lot of things, but a patient person isn’t at the top of the list. For example, waiting for Winter Texan season to arrive is a painful process I have to endure, year after year. But the good news is...it’s here...and... YOU’RE here! (Finally, I might add!!)
I’ve worked with Winter Texans since 1995 in a variety of capacities, so I should be used to the ‘hurry up and wait.’ But, sadly, I find that my impatience gets the best of me year after year. It’s just that you bring with you so many things – cooler weather, for one, which is always welcome. But it’s the excitement and whirl of activity that surround you that is what really gets me excited. And I love how we speak the same language. The camaraderie we share and the bond we have--I miss those when you’re gone. And, quite frankly, I’m more like you all than I am a local. Now that you’re finally here, Welcome Home! Let’s get this party started! I hope to see you all soon, out and about! • We’re just connecting the dots,
Kristi

Harry James aboard the U.S.S. Petoskey
Seaman 1st Class Harry James H Served as Striker in WWII by Jess Merrill, Snow to Sun RV Resort
Harry
James came to the Rio Grande Valley with his wife in 1975. His brother-in-law had come down in a trailer with his family. Harry and his wife sold their home in Ohio and followed them. For the first eight years, they lived in an RV park close to Boca Chica Beach near Brownsville. They spent a lot of time fishing off the jetties in the Gulf of Mexico. Harry said some days they would have 60 to 80 fish to clean. “We would get a little loaded, drinking and cleaning fish,” Harry said. Harry still likes his scotch and water. He drives from Snow to Sun RV Park to his son’s house in Weslaco for happy hour every day. “My son doesn’t think I’ll remember to take my pills, so I go over there, take my medicine, and we have a
HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH happy hour. I drink one scotch and water.” What’s remarkable is that Harry will
turn 100 years old in January. He is a little hard of hearing but still very active. He lives by himself now in a small home in Snow to Sun where he spends his time creating beautiful oil paintings and watching TV. Until a few years ago, he carved wood sculptures. “I had to give that up because the dust interfered with my breathing. I’d like to pick it up again, but I have to get a breathing apparatus that will keep the dust out of my face,” Harry said. During WWII, Harry served in the U.S. Navy aboard a submarine chaser, the U.S.S. Petoskey (PC569). He left his wife and little baby at home when he deployed in 1942 from San Francisco to the Northern Pacific where they patrolled off the
