I’d like to take this opportunity to invite you to stick around, to extend your stay for a few days, weeks, months... or even indefinitely! The fun keeps coming; we keep dancing, dining, and having fun all summer long, and we’d love to have you join us.
It’s been hectic, to say the least. It’s literally “smooth sailing” from here, as we will set sail on our annual Cruise with Kristi (That’s me!) in a few days. The cruise is a much-needed pause from life at the office, and I’m excited that this year we have over 300 people joining us. It’s a wonderful celebration at sea--a bit of rest and relaxation combined with a whole lot of fun. Music, dancing, food. and fellowship with friends. What more could one ask for?

Cathy Sutton oversees the operations of Chimney RV Resort and Seven Oaks, both located in Mission.
In Mission, StorageCafe lauds the community’s affordable cost of living, abundance of RV parks, and mild winter temperatures and calls the city “a paradise for nature lovers,” with nearby attractions like the National Butterfly Center and the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park.
There’s another great quality Mundt alluded to that was reinforced by Cathy Sutton, the regional district manager for the company that owns Chimney Park and the nearby Seven Oaks Resort. Sutton knows firsthand of the differences between how winter visitors are seen in the Valley and how they are viewed in her native state of Florida.
“I was shocked when I came here and saw how they’re welcomed in the Valley with festivals and discounts at restaurants,” Sutton said. “In Florida, tourists are regarded as pests who clog up the roads and
restaurants. The communities here are far friendlier, and you mix that in with the price and proximity to Mexico for medical services, and you have a great place for them to come.”
Finding A Home
Sutton first came to Mission in 2019 when her company acquired Seven Oaks on south Inspiration Road.
She figured it would be a short stay to help get things organized and set up after the acquisition. In 2022, when her company purchased Chimney Park, Sutton was still in Mission, having found a new home.
“I came here for a few months but liked it so much that I’m still here four years later,” she said.
Sutton is busy overseeing improvements being made at the picturesque Chimney Park, which sits alongside the Rio Grande on south Conway Avenue in Mission.

Preserving Mexican, Spanish, Latin American Heritage Through Music, Dance
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
In the heart of La Joya Independent School District, the vibrant beats of Grupo Folklórico Tabasco echo the rich cultural tapestry of Mexico, Spain, and Latin America. Established in 1982, this remarkable program at La Joya High School has not only become a source of pride for the community but also a beacon of cultural preservation and academic success.
The primary objective of Grupo Folklórico Tabasco is to showcase and celebrate the Mexican cultural roots of the students within La Joya ISD. Beyond the colorful performances and intricate dances, the program serves a crucial role as a retention and graduation initiative, contributing to the overall academic success of its participants.
As the program marks its 42nd anniversary in 2024, the dedication to its core philosophy remains
unwavering. La Joya High School's folklórico program is not merely a series of performances; it's a living testament to the commitment to perform and preserve the rich folklore and culture of Mexico, Spain, and Latin America.
Orgullo y Tradición, the annual concert hosted by La Joya High School Grupo Folklórico, is a culmination of months of hard work and dedication. The event showcases a mesmerizing fusion of traditional music and dance, transporting the audience to the heart of diverse cultural landscapes.
Experience this fusion yourself February 17 at 2 p.m. and February 18 at 1 p.m. at the Alejandro “Alex” H. Saenz Performing Arts Center, 604 N. Coyote Drive in La Joya. Purchase tickets at ticketspicket.com.
The success of the program is not only measured in the applause
it receives on stage but also in the impact it has on the students. By fostering a deep connection to their cultural heritage, Grupo Folklórico Tabasco contributes to a sense of identity and belonging among the participants. As La Joya High School Grupo Folklórico embarks on another year of cultural celebration, Orgullo y Tradición continues to be a shining example of how music and dance can be powerful tools for cultural preservation and community building. Cheers to 42 years of success, growth, and a vibrant cultural journey that promises to continue for years to come. •

W e would like for y’all to meet our friends, Pat and Sylvia. These two are absolutely amazing! They are both Converted Texans, and no, they’ve never met. Let’s back up a bit.
Pat and her sweet husband, Bob,
came into The Lamb’s Loom a number of years ago. She loves to knit hats. As we shared our story of gathering hats and other items all year and then sending them out with mission groups around the world, her face just lit up. They left that day, but you could see the twinkle in her eye. When they came back a few weeks later, they had a whole bag full of hats to donate! Throughout the year, we have yarn that is donated to us, so we began to share some of that with Pat to use for the hats. She and Bob kept returning with hats and getting more yarn. Well, fast forward a couple of years, and Pat mentioned that she had a big basket full of little balls of leftover yarn and didn’t know if she would ever use it all up. That’s when we told her about our friend, Sylvia.
Sylvia found out about us and began loom knitting hats for our Donation Chest years ago. She loves making the hats, and when her daughter discovered what she was up to, she joined
in and began making pompoms for all of the hats. They have quite the system going! We also began giving Sylvia some donated yarn for the hats, and she would bring back bags and bags of hats. One day, she said how much she loved combining all of the little leftovers and turning them into a special little hat--or
pompom. Nothing going to waste there! So, we began sorting and setting aside any of the little yarn balls that came in, just for Sylvia.
Back to Pat. We shared with Pat that our friend Sylvia would love to use all of those little balls of yarn, and, sure enough, Pat returned with a big bag just for Sylvia. Now, when Pat comes in to put her hats in the Donation Chest, she has her “Sylvia Bag” ready to leave, too. What a team God has stitched together! We would love for you to join in and help stitch it forward with us. You just never know who may be knit into your day! So come on over and join us at The Lamb’s Loom at 1102 Tamarack in McAllen. We are open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Additional parking is available in the rear via Upas Avenue. Updates and other information are available on our website at thelambsloom.com. Let’s continue to #stitchitforward together! We’re putting #loveineverystitch. •

Beautiful La Floresta RV Park, located near Mercedes, had a first December 29, 2023. That day, during the Park’s Mixed Couples Scramble, Don Walters got a hole-in-one on hole number five (133 yards).
Suddenly, everyone heard, “Check the hole!” Sure enough, Don's ball was in the hole. Let the celebration begin. After a few minutes, they heard more screaming. Don's wife, Mary, got a hole-in-one on hole number three (80 yards).
This is the first for the course to have a husband and wife get a hole-in-one on the same day. Congratulations to both of them. This was Don's first, but Mary got one last year on hole number 5.
La Floresta has Mixed Couples on Tuesdays and Fridays. The men’s league is on Wednesdays, the women’s league is on Thursdays, and divorce court is on Sundays. (Editor’s Note: Now, that’s funny!) •

I was noticing my hands this morning. They looked so dry, so old. As I reached for the lotion, my mind flashed back to the day I noticed my father’s hands for the first time. That’s when I began to appreciate his strong hands and began to really appreciate him. He was an oil man by trade. In 1999, we moved to Kansas to help Dad out in his business. While out on a well with him one day, he took out a whopping big crescent wrench and started working on a well having issues. God directed my eyes to his rugged hands. They looked older…and yet they were still strong enough to do his life’s work. I got a little teary thinking of him getting older but mostly thankful for the strong daddy God had given me. And I was thankful God had directed us to Kansas to be near him and mom.
That memory led me to consider all the scriptures relating to God’s hands. Here’s a sampling:
“And God will exalt you in due time, if you humble yourselves under His mighty hand.”
1 Peter 5:6
“Your arm is endowed with power; Your
Perspectives The Hands of God
Edna Ziegler, chaplain’s wife
hand is strong, Your right hand exalted.” Psalm 89:13-15
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
While our hands in human frailty will grow feeble and weak, God’s will not. Throughout all generations, they have remained strong and will continue to, straight into eternity. Abba Father is saying, “Let me carry you, be your strength, be your help.”
My earthly daddy turns 90 this week, and while his hands are a great deal weaker than they were 23 years ago, they are still very busy. He loves to bake so he can bless others with his delicious goods. The family once kidded him that he needed to open his own shop called Bennie’s Bakery.
While it’s guaranteed this side of heaven that my daddy’s hands, as well as my own and yours, will grow weaker, it is also guaranteed that God’s hands will not. If you have put your faith in Jesus Christ, you have become God’s child, not just His amazing creation, but a special
child with access to His throne room. You will always have a steady strong Father God to hold you, to help you, to carry you, to love you, and yes, even discipline you, if necessary.
I pray today that even if you did not get a loving and strong-handed daddy like mine in your youth, that you would recognize you do have a loving and strong-handed God reaching out His hand to you, offering you salvation through His Son, offering you adoption into His family. May you accept His offer and start your journey walking hand in hand with God, here on this earth and into eternity.

Alamo Police, Fire Departments Caught Speeding at Winter Gardens Raceway
Special to Welcome Home Winter Texan
Alamo Police and Fire departments weren’t chasing speeding and wrecked vehicles recently; they were chasing and wrecking into each other at a radio-controlled race track in Alamo.
Winter Gardens Raceway in Winter Ranch RV Resort was blessed with sunny skies and warm balmy breezes Saturday, January 13, as Raceway Club members again hosted the Alamo Police and Fire departments in a competition with radio-controlled cars. Race cars were courtesy of New Sun Racing and several Raceway Club members. Adding a unique touch to the day’s races were two custom trucks, one a red truck with Alamo Fire Department decals and the other a blue truck with Alamo Police Department decals. After the opening prayer and National Anthem, driver introductions were given by Brad Huff, vice president
of Winter Gardens RC Club. Winter Ranch manager Mark Foster voiced appreciation for the services the Alamo Police and Fire departments provide to residents of Winter Ranch. Alamo Mayor J.R. Garza thanked Winter Gardens Raceway for inviting the Police and Fire departments to race and acknowledged the comradery and relationship the Alamo Police and Fire departments and the City of Alamo share with Winter Texans. Following instruction operating the radio-controlled cars and a few practice laps, police and fire personnel competed against each other in 10- to 15-lap heats. In the Grudge Match heat, Alamo Police Chief Saul Solis bested Alamo Fire Chief Roy Contreras, while the Alamo Fire Department team won over the Alamo Police Department team in the Department Challenge heat. The City Executives Race found Alamo City Commissioner Roel Mo rena in 1st Place, with Alamo City Commissioner Pete Morales finishing 2nd, and
Mayor Garza coming in 3rd. (Mayor Garza wrecked his first vehicle and had to finish in a backup car.)
Winter Gardens remote-control race track, built by residents of Winter Ranch and Trophy Gardens, is a 1/10 scale model of Nascar’s Kansas Speedway, with 11-degree banking on the three corners. The track is 15 ft. wide and a total of 135 ft in length, with guardrails and a 70 ft straightaway. The race cars are 1/10 scale electric cars with transponders that tie into the track’s computerized lap-counter system. The track complex includes a sound system, a covered race car pit area, covered driver and spectator stands, a golf cart spectator terrace, and a concession stand with picnic tables for dining.
Thanks to the many Winter Gardens Raceway volunteers who contributed to the day’s success, including--but not limited to--track supervisor Larry Chapin; Huff; track announcer Fred Sauer; infield marshals Shirley Kleve, Candy Kooy, Bob Babler, Randy Lemasters, Stu Sheel, and Tim Schmuck; and Weenie World concession volunteers Larry and Paula Dyer, Audrey Huff, and Carol Ritchie.
Winter Gardens Raceway will host the RGV RC Car Spring
Nationals Wednesday, February 21. Registration is $5 per car and is open to all RGV parks. A park badge is required. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m.; races start at 11:00 a.m., with concessions at Weenie World beginning at 10:30. Classes include 2WD and 4 WD Stock Traxxas Slash, 2WD and 4WD Open (any chassis), and 2WD and 4WD Buggy (Bandit or Rustler). The event’s rain date is Wednesday, February 28.
