Letter of introduction
Dear Friends,
In the year 2023 many new refugees resettled in Jersey City, and those who had arrived before continued their progress towards achieving selfreliance and becoming integrated into the community. Welcome Home was there to help, as it has been since 2016. Our staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to help our friends obtain benefits to which they were entitled; help them learn English, find jobs, get necessary training and develop life skills; and access and resolve problems with housing, health care and schooling.
Our activities, described in this report, are founded on respect for the journeys our friends have made and our desire to promote social ties and support networks that will help them for the long term. By providing opportunities for local residents and organizations to volunteer their time and talents and contribute goods and services, resettlement becomes a community effort. We believe that by providing a community-based long welcome, we are forging a new narrative about refugee resettlement.
We thank you for your interest in our work and for your support.
Dave Mammen, Chair

HARNESSING THE POWER OF COMMUNITY FOR OUR NEWEST NEIGHBORS
Most every Monday evening Welcome
Home friends, staff and volunteers meet to have dinner, get homework help and play games, practice conversational ESL, and connect to get help with various matters including employment and benefit applications.
Saint Peter’s University generously provides facilities, and faculty and staff join in. This core activity helps build community for and with our recently resettled friends.
Fun club
Welcome Home is not just an organization that helps me and my family -- it is a community.
We do not feel alone. My wife and our children regularly go to Fun Club and we have met other Afghan families living in Jersey City through Welcome Home. Whatever they do is made possible by their volunteers.Thank you.
Abdul H.
David Gerlach, Ph.D., chairperson of the history department and Director of the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Saint Peter’s University, became involved in Welcome Home Jersey City and Fun Club when he was teaching a course about the history of migrants and refugees. “I wanted to add a service-learning component to the course and began putting students together with various organizations,” he said. “Welcome Home Jersey City is helping out at the ground level, helping people get situated with day-to-day living. Then, they build in the community aspect, which is so important. Many refugees are really on their own.”
For parents and single adults, Fun Club offers practical resources such as English as a Second Language help, career coaching and tax preparation. Sometimes they attend to simply chat and socialize, while for their children it’s a place where they can work on homework or play games. “School is tough,” Dr. Gerlach said, “The kids don’t really speak the language and this is a place they can feel comfortable and are accepted—no questions asked.” Can it get a little chaotic with 30-40 children running around, playing games and eating pizza? “Sure,” Dr. Gerlach continued. “But it’s a lovely energy and the Saint Peter’s students who attend always enjoy their experience seeing the different cultural aspects at work too, is a rewarding experience for our students.”
Excerpt from Saint Peter’s University alumni magazine article about Welcome Home.
The nonprofit organization Childhood Education International notes that children’s well-being and integration is fundamental to refugee family wellbeing and integration. And the UN High Commissioner for Refugees has observed that “education is a way to help young people heal.”
Families thrive when children thrive
One of our young friends, Bilal A., was honored as ESL Student of the Year at MS 33
Kenna Mateos, our Director of Programs, works to develop strong connections with the Jersey City public schools to facilitate enrollment, help parents understand and resolve classroom issues, and take advantage of summer programs.
Kenna is a member of the public schools’ Early Childhood Advisory Council. In addition, many of our volunteers are parents of school-aged children with first-hand experience of such matters and our Employment and Education Committee has knowledge and expertise with high school matriculation and college admissions. Working together with schools as partners in resettlement and integration, our goal is to help children and their families thrive
Once again we were able to distribute bookbags with school supplies to more than 100 children. Volunteers gathered at our storage unit to fill their cars with bookbags and hit the city with delivery lists. Our group chat flooded with praise and gratitude from our friends.
This summer, our Fun Clubbers participated in a variety of summer camps! New kids that arrived through the International Rescue Committee attended their summer program based out of Kean University, Refugee Youth Summer Academy (RYSA).
The Jersey City Public Schools had a handful of offerings, even making connections with Camp Liberty and Camp Wilderness, which allowed for many of our kids who attend JCPS to participate. Many of our students were happy to participate in the JCPS half day camp program that focused on learning and academics!
Several of our kids attended Buck's Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp, a sleepaway camp in Connecticut where working artists and teachers offer world-class instruction in over 30 different arts, including dance, glassblowing, improv, weaving, lighting design, ceramics, and much more.
One of our moms – herself a talented artist -- shared some updates about how much her son enjoyed his time at camp: “I think that experience [like this] touches the heart, especially for those of us who are friends of the arts.” The camp generously provided full scholarships for our kids.
Volunteers on the Donations, Drives and Deliveries committee work year-round to obtain and distribute food, clothing, school supplies and other items that families need including baby items, air conditioners, bikes, televisions, laptops, and kitchenware.
Donations, Drives and Deliveries
These efforts are led by Priti
Chitnis Gress,
Vice Chair of our board. Spring clothing and winter coat events provided many households with much needed items. A special thanks to the United Synagogue of Hoboken Refugee Support Committee and to many local schools for collecting clothing, and to Alpha Industries for sending us 14 boxes of brand new coats. The Flow Initiative and NJCW Essex donated feminine hygiene products, oftentimes considered luxury items for our friends.
On March 18, we partnered with the Islamic Circle of North America to deliver Ramadan food boxes to 75 families. Each box contained essentials like flour, oil, sugar, pasta, dried beans, rice and a halal meat voucher. Volunteers helped sort food and pack up boxes in the morning and others delivered them in the afternoon. On December 9 we were able to deliver bags filled with nonperishables, sweet potatoes, and a halal meat voucher to every family.
Thanks to the incredible partners, volunteers and donors we had this year: Uniqlo stores of North Jersey, All Saints Episcopal Day SchoolHoboken, Montclair State University, The OLC School, Stevens Cooperative School, The Brunswick School in Downtown Jersey City, Roots Farm Fresh, Coalition for Food and Health Equity, RWJBarnabas Health, Riaz Wahid through Mercy Co-Op, Bombas employees, and Girl Scout troops 12912 and 10562. As if the gift of food and time were not enough, All Saints student Riva went the extra mile and raised $270 for Welcome Home by selling hot cocoa.
EMPOWERING LIVES AND INSPIRING HOPE
Eager to work, our friend Fabiola went out into the neighborhood to inquire about employment at local businesses. She knew to come to Fun Club with her onboarding documents where staff were able to help her fill out her required paperwork and she was able to begin working the following week. Additionally, she has been able to enroll her baby in daycare which allows her husband to work during the day, too.
EXTENDING A HAND TODAY INSPIRES
HOPE FOR TOMORROW
The Employment and Education Committee of Welcome Home is led by board member Bess
Morrison and her husband Fred Miller. They have learned that the best way to help our friends get jobs is to develop relationships with employers who are open to hiring refugees. One of their successes in 2023 has been working with Scram Bakery in Jersey City.
Many of our friends are women who want jobs but can only work during school hours; Scram is primarily a breakfast provider and offered opportunities that met our friends’ needs. We reached out to two Afghan women that had been asking for help finding work, as well as one Afghan man.
To prepare, we had to convince one of the women and her husband to let her interview by herself as previously her husband had insisted on being the one to speak at interviews. For the three candidates’ interviews with Scram’s owner, we arranged to have both a member of the Employment Committee and a Dari interpreter present to insure that everything discussed was understood clearly by our friends.
All three received offers and started working part-time jobs as a baker, a sandwich maker, and a porter/cleaner a couple of days later. The owner is thrilled. We are hoping to place more Welcome Home friends as positions open up at Scram.
With the help of our Employment and Education Committee two friends – Brigitte and Cleomary – took coursework and received certification to be home health aides. Here is Cleomary celebrating her graduation to be a home health aide.
Staff member Manija Mayel kindly offered her time, talents, and work kitchen at the Scandi School to create a catering opportunity for several women in our network at an event in May for Zarif Designs hosted by Diane von Furstenberg at her world headquarters in the meatpacking district of Manhattan. Manija and her team of Mitra A., Narges R. and Tahmina G. took a family style meal and made it into small cocktail bites including meatballs on toothpicks, bite sized Saffron rice cakes with Afghan saffron threads, two types of samosa, dried fruits and nuts and cardamom and rose pudding.
Our friends -- operating as Cardamom & Rose -- were so happy to have an opportunity to work and earn money.
Samar Issa, Assistant Professor of Economics and Finance at Saint Peter’s University, established a Women’s Leadership Program to help Welcome Home friends gain skills needed to succeed in the U.S. job market. Computer, financial literacy, and professional development workshops were held in-person bi-weekly at the university computer lab by Dr. Issa and her students.
Another project for Afghan refugee women was organized by Maryam Kardoush, IRC’s Career Development Specialist. Meeting weekly for 12 weeks, the Women in Action program helped participants identify personal goals in a supportive environment that was female, safe and confidential.
They were able to embrace an active role in building family economic self-sufficiency and increase connections and contributions to a wider community through a mix of in-class instruction, hands-on experiential learning activities, participant-led discussions, field trips, and guest speakers.
Partners from the national organization Welcome.US donated 50 Google phones with T-Mobile service plans featuring unlimited data and usage for 12 months at no cost, followed by the option to move to a discounted paid plan. These will be a huge help for our newly arrived friends.
A student-led civic organization called the Westchester Youth Congress (WYC) generously donated 30 laptops with chargers obtained through a fundraiser organized by Ben Kasoff, co-President.
During the summer of 2022, teens Tara and Ritu from McNair Academic High School created a month-long coding class for our kids held at a local library. Tara’s off to college, but Ritu and her sister Richa offered a repeat class in the summer of 2023.
EMPOWERING LIVES AND INSPIRING HOPE
Zoraida came to the U.S. as an asylum seeker with her three year old granddaughter Ashley. Even though she had full custody, she was separated from Ashley when released in Utah because of a paperwork error in Colombia.Zoraida resettled in Jersey City and asked for our help. Our Spanish-speaking team members Jen Moranchel and Jackie Zapata connected her with local officials and helped her apply for Medicaid. Ashley was then reunited with Zoraida.
A BEACON OF HOPE IN JERSEY CITY
Lincoln Park
Welcome Home once again participated in the All About Downtown Street Fair in Jersey City.
Staff and volunteers had a fun day recruiting volunteers, selling t-shirts, putting temporary tattoos on little ones walking by and of course blowing bubbles while listening to live music playing in the background! This event has been a great opportunity for volunteers to talk to community members and inform them about the work of Welcome Home.
We celebrated World Refugee Day on Saturday, June 24 with resettlement agency Church World Service. This event was open to all and of course there was food, music, and a bazaar where refugee makers sold their goods. We were able to give away our Welcome Home t-shirts to the families in attendance!
The Center for Leadership Studies at Saint Peter’s University hosted a field day event for our Fun Club kids. It was a safe, welcoming, and green space for families who have resettled under diff ere lawn games, po a movie, and pizza.
SPU Women’s Basketball Clinic
The Saint Peter’s University Women’s Basketball team hosted our 1st through 8th graders for an afternoon of basketball fun. The kids played games, relay races, and did lots of team building! The team, along with their coach Johannah Leedham-Warner, welcomed our kids with open arms. As usual, our kids fearlessly jumped right in despite some never having played basketball before. On coordination, Fatime shared “My brain was telling my hands
For the third year in a row Princeton University’s Office of Religious Life invited our families to visit campus for outdoor games, lunch, a campus tour and of course pumpkin carving. The university generously provided 2 busses so we were able to take more than 60 people, including many of our newly arrived Spanish speaking families who said it was such a fun day not only for their kids but for the adults too!
“The City of Hoboken is so grateful to Welcome Home for partnering with us on the successful Rent for Refugees campaign which raised over $40,000 for Ukrainian refugees. Dozens of families were able to secure shelter in our adopted sister city Bialystok, Poland, thanks to Welcome Home’s kind assistance as fiscal agent for the campaign. We knew that we could trust Welcome Home with this sensitive mission, and we are grateful to them for helping all our neighbors, whether they be here in Hudson County, or halfway across the globe.”

Uniqlo celebrated the opening of their new store at Newport Center Mall by offering Welcome Home friends an opportunity to shop for free before the store opened. On a rainy Saturday morning, our teens and tweens were warmly greeted by store managers and staff and paired with a personal shopper to pick out a top, bottom, and a piece of outerwear. It was so special to see our friends choose new clothes for themselves. The folks at Uniqlo welcomed our friends with open arms and treated them with grace and kindness. A huge thanks to Nelly, Yvonne, Jose, and their staff at Uniqlo for thi
We’re grateful to the Beacon Hope and Equity Center, a supporting organization of the Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation, for offering our friends an opportunity to apply for microgrants to help with a variety of needs including housing, food insecurity, and medical bills.
Many of the households we help are extremelylow income by federal government standards. Many have large households with 4 or more children, and encounter at least 2 of the 4 housing problems characterized as “severe”, namely overcrowding (more than 1.5 persons per room) and extremely high-cost burdens (over 50% of income). The problem of housing affordability is pervasive across the country and is certainly not unique to resettled households, but is at the center of the financial hardship faced by many of those we help. Our Board Chair Dave Mammen wrote an opinion article to draw attention to this issue; it was published in The Jersey Journal and can be read here.
EMPOWERING LIVES AND INSPIRING HOPE
“Welcome Home has helped me in many ways. I could not describe everything they do for me, but the most important is I no longer feel alone. Traveling to an unknown country, with a 10 year old child, with no one else around is very difficult. When I became part of this group, my life became easier because they help me to feel safe. Thank you.”
Beatriz E.
Our friend Beatriz and her son JD came to us in the summer of 2021. She was referred by our good friend Mike McLean, who was the Division Director at Jersey City’s Division of Immigrant Affairs. Both artists, JD was quick to show us his ability to work with different medias; an architect in her home country of Colombia, Beatriz eagerly showed us her skill in graphic design. They have been active participants since they joined us.
Our Employment and Education team was able to help JD attend Buck's Rock Performing and Creative Arts Camp, where he thrived. Initially signed up for the first session, his mother asked if his stay could be extended after she saw him on visiting day and said he was as happy as he had ever been. The camp director kindly made arrangements so JD could stay on for an additional four weeks.
VOLUNTEERING CHANGES LIVES, MAYBE EVEN YOUR OWN
In 2023 we presented Lila Kalish, Madeline Martineau and Michelle McSwiggan Kelly with the Kara Murphy Award which honors outstanding volunteers for their dedication and service. Kara was one of the cofounders of Welcome Home and now serves as a board member, exemplifying the volunteer spirit that animates the organization.
Lila, Madeline and Michelle work tirelessly behind the scenes with other members of our grant writing team as part of our Fund Development effort led by board member Makiko Oku. Together their efforts help sustain all of our activities and because of their hard work, Welcome Home is able to help hundreds of people.
“We arrived in Jersey City feeling overwhelmed. The staff and volunteers of Welcome Home welcomed us with open arms, treating us like family and assuring us that we were not alone in this new journey.
I extend my sincere gratitude to not only the staff I have met but also to those who work behind the scenes to make this organization exceptional. Thank you.”
HAMIDULLAH G.
In 2023 we were lucky enough to host Gaby Mejia, a doctoral student looking to fulfill a field experience requirement. She worked with our highest needs Afghan women who are mostly preliterate and had very little educational or vocational experience. Her work focused on occupational therapies like how to get around their neighborhoods, how to navigate medical appointments, pick up and drop off a prescription, access language lines, and other things we don’t often put thought to, like how to dispense vitamins to children.
Gaby’s work with our friends was slow but steady.
In the end, the women sought out her expertise and advice. Gaby completed her experience requirement and graduated last Spring. She has built a life-long relationship with the women she worked with and still commits to visiting, having seen one of them through a complicated pregnancy and various health issues. Gaby is now working as an occupational therapist in Elizabeth Public Schools.
We hope to welcome other students to fulfill academic fieldwork requirements through service with Welcome Home.
To volunteer with us, please fill out the form on this page.

Ousmane came to us by way of the Envision Freedom Fund in August 2022 when he was just 19 years old.He has been thriving since his arrival, due in large part to the community support he has found through Welcome Home. He received his work permit, social security card, driving permit and Unaccompanied Minor status thanks to the efforts of volunteer Crystal who gathered all the necessary documents and staff member Jackie who liaised with his attorney at the Rutgers University Immigration Clinic. He was hired to work in the kitchen at the Scandi School, where our staff member Manija is chef.
PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS
Over the past year many local schools, youth groups, and other nonprofit organizations contributed volunteers and donated goods and services for Welcome Home events and to fulfill the specific needs of families. This is a testament to the desire of many to help refugees and to the reputation of Welcome Home as a trusted organization.
We thank them all.

Alain Mentha: In Memoriam
We are inspired in our efforts by Alain Mentha, one of our co-founders and the heart and soul of our organization who died on January 1, 2023.
Our Vice Chair Priti Chitnis Gress paid tribute to Alain during a service at Temple Beth-El; following are excerpts from her remarks.
Good morning. My name is Priti Gress and I serve on the board of Welcome Home Jersey City, the nonprofit that Alain helped co-found and dedicated the better part of the last five years to. I would like to share some of Alain’s own words about how Welcome Home began, from a speech he gave a few years ago:
“My wife and daughter and I decided to start helping the local refugee resettlement agency the day after the 2016 election. My first experience consisted of sitting on the floor of an office sorting donated bed sheets. Then I began teaching a conversational English class, where I met clients from all over the world. I had no prior experience teaching English, but I delighted in making my new friends laugh, which may have been the most important thing for these isolated and frightened newcomers. Then we helped set up an apartment for a family who’d yet to arrive. When I found out that the family had a daughter my own daughter’s age, I asked if we could meet them. And we did. And the rest is history!
Upon meeting other volunteers, we began to brainstorm how we could augment and expand the resources provided by the resettlement agency. In 2017 our co-founder, Kara Murphy gave us a name: Welcome Home. In 2018 we became a 501c3 nonprofit and launched our enrichment program, Fun Club, which was attended by a hundred clients and volunteers every week.”
My friend Rebeca said to me this week, “Alain made Jersey City a city of hope for so many families.” And this is absolutely true. He worked tirelessly to help make sure the friends we serve had housing, food, education and employment opportunities, and in the course of this work, Alain Mentha built a truly extraordinary Beloved Community right here in Jersey City. A community where people of all ages, genders and cultural backgrounds—who hail from countries around the world and speak dozens of languages and practice different religions—come together in a spirit of love and mutual respect to help each other.
For so many individuals and families, Alain was like a family member and he was the reason they succeeded. You can see this in the outpouring of personal messages of grief, love, thanks and hope on the Welcome Home social media when our friends learned of Alain’s passing.
Alain, you gave this city a tremendous gift in the community you built. If our days could be measured in the time we spent caring for others, in welcoming the stranger, in acts of kindness, in helping the most vulnerable, and in fighting injustice, then I would say that you lived a thousand lifetimes, my friend. When I said goodbye to you on Saturday in the hospital, I promised you we would carry on your work. I know I speak for the whole board and all the volunteers, friends and partners of Welcome Home Jersey City when I say that you will continue to be our guiding star and inspiration every step of the way. Your legacy and memory will always be for a blessing to all of us.

Claudia arrived from Colombia seeking asylum. She was referred to us by her sisters who live in Jersey City and participate in Welcome Home activities. Kenna connected them with the multilingual intake center so the kids can be enrolled in school while Jen connected them with Saint Peter’s University’s Campus Ministry kitchen to make an appointment for the campus kitchen and closet for essential and urgent needs. A health issue put Claudia in the hospital where she risked missing an important appointment related to her asylum application. Our volunteer Eileen King English, an immigration attorney, generously agreed on a pro-bono basis to help her postpone her interview and prepare for next steps.
