Location: Shanghai, China Climate: Subtropical maritime monsoon climate, mild and moist Type: Professional work in Verse Design Size: 22.7m*11m Date: 2018.08.

Supervisor: Architect Huan Qiao Concept: A holiday villa project in Shanghai. I built a model of the house using SketchUp based on a designated plan and did the rendering.

The details of the house and the styles of furniture were all designed by myself. My goal is to make the house look spacious and comfortable.

Concept: I did the interior design of a blank plan of the holiday vila by AutoCAD. My goal was to design a house with various kinds of functions and facilities that people could enjoy the vacation without stepping out of the villa.

Daytime Sky: Overcast Type: Course work-Arch 435 Date: Autumn 2019 Supervisor: Professor Christopher Meek Concept: It is a lighting design of the living room and the bedroom of the holiday vila. The lighting has to be sufficient because of the percentage of overcast days.

The living room has the visual tasks of gathering, resting, and meeting. It meets the category of working spaces where visual tasks are performed 100 lx (10 fc). The dining place fits public spaces 30 lx (3 fc) or working spaces 100 lx (10 fc).

The bedroom is for sleeping, watching TV, and reading. The category of simple orientation for short visits 50 lx (5 fc) would fit the lighting of bed area. There is also a desk area in the bedroom which fits the category of performance of visual tasks of high contrast and large size 300 lx (30 fc).

The Eastern Garden & Cool Box -Redesign of Williams Park

2 Bird's Eye View Location: Seattle, WA Climate: Temperate marine climate, mild and moist Sky: Overcast Type: Course work-Arch 380 Size: 170' * 60' Date: Spring 2019 Supervisor: Professor Roark Congdon Concept: Redesign of Williams Park. I designed an eastern style garden by using Rhino. It contains pavilions, pavilion-style slides and monkey bar, a sand and stone garden, and taiji-shaped ponds.

On a cloudy day, the contrast between red and green is very prominent. Except for children, office workers can have a rest while waiting for the bus. The bus station is also made of wood in oriental style.

Hard copy of the design scheme.

Concept: 12" * 12" * 6" made by E flute cardboard by using laser cutter. It is used to display the design project at the presentation. Part of the design of the park will be placed in the cool box to show the effect. My cool box contains the symmetrical play structures, taiji ponds, and pavilions. Its shape is a cylinder taiji diagram to show my theme. They opening of the box must be "cool" to catch viewers' eyes, and the hard copy of the design scheme should be smartly hiden in the box. Hence, the designer could raise viewers' interest and get supports and sponsers.

Climate Design Priorities First, we need to keep the heat in and the cold temperatures out during the winter. Second, we need to protect the building from cold winter wind. To achieve this we need to:

• Use light colored patios, pavements, or land surfaces to reflect additional sunlight through windows.

• Use active solar collectors for domestic hot water, swimming-pool heating, space heating, and process heat for industry.

The Temple of Heaven Rendering

Location: Beijing, China Climate: Temperate monsoon climate, cool and dry Sky: Clear Type: Course work-Arch 481 Size: 32m in diameter & 38m in height Date: Autumn 2019 Supervisor: Professor Roark Congdon Concept: This is a rendering of the Temple of Heaven in Beijing.

Modeling and rendering are all done by me using Rhino and V-Ray. I want to reflect the magnificent and sacred feeling of the Temple of Heaven, so I use the mirror as the material of the ground.

Concept: Reflections on the spatial fluency.

Using thick white cardboard, the model is approximately 20*20*20 cm, and the real size should be 6*6*6 m. All the drawings of it were drawn on 4k or 8k or A4 paper by pencil.

The concept is that circulation is like a spin, both horizontal and vertical. People could walk inside round and round, and when they get the center, they could climb up the ladder, and climb and walk outside round by round. When they arrive the highest outside edge, they could walk down the stairs, and finally leave the cube. In this cube, people could experience the formal beauty of space from the gentle changes of near and far, high and low, light and shade. All these various experience express different meanings of the space, and could bring people more fun than a simple cube while visiting this place.

White cardboard, done independently, approximately 6 cm length, 2 cm width (folded), 9 cm width (fully unfolded). 2017. 07.

I designed a ring box which is low-cost and environmental-friendly, but would deliver a sense of surprise while unfolding it and emphasize on a ritualistic presentation of a jewelry piece.

Grasshopper Version

The model made by Grasshopper and Rhino. I recreated and refined this work by using Grasshopper.

4. The Diamond Ring-Weaverbird

First, I made a bowl by using Python. By doing different tests, I got a shape that was best for my further steps. With this bowl, I could trim petals to form a lotus.

Since it was a ring box, I made a diamond ring by using Weaverbird plugin.

Then I realized a number slider was necessary for me to control the points of curve to enable the opening and closing of the bowl, so that the bendind degree of the petals would also change in a natural way when I made the lotus open and close.

That was how the ring looked like when it was inside the lotus ring box. However, when the lotus was closed, nothing could be seen through. That made sense in real life, but I would like to add some more interests since it was still in 3D modeling.

I trimmed the petal by using Surface Split, and did a lot of calculations to find the right position and range of the Surface Split that would not make the petals change shapes or fall apart while forming lotus if I moved the number slider.

I rotated the trimming area and made it a ten-petal lotus. The lotus could open and close smoothly and did not fall apart when I move the number slider from 0 to 7.

The oetals would increasingly stretch as they open.

5. The Meshed Lotus-Tests

Hence, I meshed the surface of the petals by using Weaverbird plugin. By changing various levels and distances, I obtained different effects of the lotus ring box, that the ring could be seen through the petals even when it was closed, but still not that clear, which was the perfect status.

7 Type: Course work-Arch 332 Size: 15"*15"*7" Date: Autumn 2018 Supervisor: Professor Jack Hunter Concept: I combined the wood, metal, and concrete works together, and made this wooden tree with copper flowers and concrete mound. I cut the bark off from the original wood, sawed it into strips and made it into joint.

The copper flowers were cut from copper sheets by machine. The concrete part was poured into the plastic bowl and cooled down. The foam column was inserted into the liquid concrete to take the place of wood joint.

Location: Seattle, WA Climate: Temperate marine climate, mild and moist Type: Group Project Size: 3.5m*8 m, 7"*16" Date: 2017. 07.

Concept: Prototypes were made of cardboard, and real stuff was made of wood. Our mission was to add some stuff for the parking spaces on parking days to attract people to stay and have a rest. So all of the models included passive area (sleeping chairs, benches, counters) and active area (chess table, blackboard, soccer place) to rethink and reclaim public space.
