Ojibwa tours start inside the fence Project loses $1.5 million grant money, but sub still open for business
The old Therm-O-Disc building.
A true Canadian success story, GCW Custom Kitchens and Cabinetry is expanding. Started in a small garage in St. Thomas in 1999, the company had just one employee and four owners. Now more than 65 local people are employed there. Ron DeWeger, President and Owner, says the company started out of necessity, to provide cabinets for local builders. After that, it just kept growing. “We’ve grown huge over the last 12 years. We’ve grown 24 per cent a year since 2007.” The other three owners include George Vanderveen, Dave Dryfhout, Owner/ Vice President and Plant Manager and Terry Kuipers. GCW Custom Kitchens and Cabinetry can do everything from entry level to custom cabinet manufacturing. “That’s really what we shine at, is our custom capabilities.” The new space will be at the old Therm-O-Disc building at 95 South Edgeware Road in St. Thomas. The facility will grant them 60,000 square feet more, and includes 10 acres on which the company can expanded, if needed. Ron says for employees this will mean a better working environment, with more space and amenities. “Our office spaces will be increased See BUSINESS/page 2

Despite losing $1.5 million of a $1.92 million Community Adjustment Fund (CAF) grant from the federal government, Project Ojibwa is still running smoothly. The grant was lost after the Department of National Defense (DND) took longer to release the submarine than the grant allowed. Melissa Raven, Director of Communications for the Elgin Military Museum, says the Department of National Defense wanted to make sure the sub’s move went well, and dragged its heels because of previous issues that occurred with sister boat Onondaga, which can be found in Rimouski, Quebec. “The long and short was it took DND longer to agree to give us the submarine, and it timed out the grant. So were were able to claim some of the money, about $400,000 for the move. . . but the other $1.5 million we couldn’t claim.” The grant timeline ran out in October of

With 850 completed surveys, the tally is in and the results are something Erica Arnett, Health Promoter with the Elgin St. Thomas Public Health Unit was banking on. “Sixtyfour per cent of survey respondents live under 10km from work or school. That’s only a half hour bike ride, which is completely doable for most people,” Erica says. The survey generated the highest response of similar surveys MMM Group Ltd, the agency tasked with creating the survey, has seen. The urge to learn ventriloquism started at a young age, when, as a child of eight, her parents took her to Canada’s Wonderland. Instead of being captured by the rides, she was interested in the front of
park entertainer, a ventriloquist. The whole ride home all she could think about was that this was what she wanted to do with her life. So the journey began. Her parents bought her 10
lessons when she was nine years old from London teacher Lynn Froggett, which Yvette says was the best way to learn — have someone teach you. “It really helps to talk to
