With 2015 coming to a close, all eyes are turning towards 2016 and what lies ahead for St. Thomas and Elgin County. Whether they have political connections, businesses designs or community focus, there are people throughout the community excited for what the future holds. Sean Dyke, general manager at St. Thomas Economic Development Corp., is one such person. Dyke said he predicts local companies will continue to grow in 2016 and give the community even more reason to share the popular #StThomasProud hashtag on social media. Bob Hammersley, president and CEO St. Thomas & District Chamber of Commerce, might even be more upbeat. “I’m a big believer in the health, happiness and prosperity angle, with the emphasis on prosperity,” Hammersley said. “Job creation, advanced manufacturing, are some of the things we are looking at as ideal opportunities. I hope they all come together, or start to. That would be the bigger wish.” Hammersley predicts big things in technical training, advanced manufacturing, and what he terms value-added agri-business. These could be some of the sectors ElginMiddlesex-London MPP Jeff Yurek looks towards when saying he plans to work “even harder” to bring more investment, and therefore jobs, to the area. Elgin-Middlesex-London MP Karen Vecchio may only have been in her new role for a few months, but she said greater community engagement remains a key resolution for her in 2016. See LOCAL, Page 2

STAY SAFE, GET AN ALARM: The St. Thomas Fire Department is conducting home safety audits to help homeowners ensure their property is safe. A fire crew will stop by individual homes and examine their interior and check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. On Dec. 23, Brian Leverton (right), fire prevention officer with the St. Thomas Fire Department, helped accept a $750 donation from the St. Thomas Elgin Insurance Brokers Assocation that will be used to support the department’s smoke/CO alarm programs. Matt Sharpe, along with Linda Evely (not pictured) made the donation to the department. For more informaiton or to set up an appointment for a fire safety inspection, call 519-631-0210.
