Kub Kar racing in the Railway City

SEAN MEYER The Weekly News

D.J. Kennington may have qualified for the Dayton 500, but he wasn’t the only racer from St. Thomas hitting the track on the weekend. Ingenuity was on full display Feb. 25 at the Elgin Mall as Cub Scouts from across St. Thomas joined their counterparts from around the county at the annual Elgin Area Kub Kar Races. Kub Kar rallies — or Beaver Buggy rallies for the younger members — are annual Scouting events providing Cub Scouts with the opportunity to design, build and race miniature cars. However, Scouting officials are quick to add Kub Kar rallies are about much more than just racing. In addition to the fun, preparing for the rallies also instil a sense of achievement and learning while providing an interactive way for youth to make new friends and discover the importance of creativity and imagination. The top finishers among each pack moved on to face off against competitors from other Cub groups on the way to crowning an eventual champion.
