D.J. Kennington may have qualified for the Dayton 500, but he wasn’t the only racer from St. Thomas hitting the track on the weekend.

Ingenuity was on full display Feb. 25 at the Elgin Mall as Cub Scouts from across St. Thomas joined their counterparts from around the county at the annual Elgin Area Kub Kar Races.

Kub Kar rallies — or Beaver Buggy rallies for the younger members — are annual Scouting events providing Cub Scouts with the opportunity to design, build and race miniature cars.

However, Scouting officials are quick to add Kub Kar rallies are about much more than just racing.

In addition to the fun, preparing for the rallies also instil a sense of achievement and learning while providing an interactive way for youth to make new friends and discover the importance of creativity and imagination.

The top finishers among each pack moved on to face off against competitors from other Cub groups on the way to crowning an eventual champion.

Ginny Trepanier is used to the generosity of St. Thomas, so much so that she’s rarely surprised by it. One of those times took place on Feb. 23 as Trepanier, owner and founder of The Grace Cafe, received a donation of $5,900 from Libro Credit Union.

“I thought it was $150 or something; I thought, ‘That’s nice; that’s really helpful.’ But it’s huge,” Trepanier said. “I have to say St. Thomas is the most caring place. We get donations of every sort all the time. People don’t even stay, they just drop it, thanks us and off they go again.

The cafe is non-profit organization dedicated to serving the less fortunate in St Thomas, offering free lunch, coffee and clothing.

Unprepared for the amount, Trepanier said she would have to talk over with her board about how the money can best be used.

However, off the top of her head, one need immediately came to mind.

“The floor that is tearing up everywhere, that is simply awful, that is a huge need. We clean it all the time, but it just comes up in strips,” she said. “This was a car repair place long ago, then it was a laundrymat, so trying to keep paint on it is just a nightmare. So we have a floor situation and we need to address that.”

The donation to The Grace Cafe is just one of many being made by Libro in an effort to “lift” up the support of the community.

This past autumn, all 33 Libro branches ran a program called LIFT, or Libro-Inspired Financial Teamwork, contributing $25 to a local non-profit organization for each new account opened between July and December 2016.

In making the official donation, Libro St. Thomas branch manager Jesse Brown lauded the company’s commitment to its community.

Inspiring financial well being and prosperity in our community is what Libro is all about,” Brown said. “By selecting a local non-profit to receive a lift, we encourage individuals to come in and see what Libro has to offer, resulting in a contribution to the success of a neighbourhood organization. It’s a win/win.”

Brown praised St. Thomas residents for their generosity as the LIFT program offered them the option of supporting non-profit groups in other communities outside the Railway City.

However, most of the people in St. Thomas kept their donations local, which Brown said “is pretty cool,” but so too are the made by Libro customers in communities such as London, Stratford and Strathroy.

This is as much about thanking the volunteers as anything.

“We are super proud of St. Thomas. This was not just about Libro as much as it is the people who came in to open an account and choose The Grace Cafe,” Brown said. “There were probably 30-plus organizations and this

was the largest (donation) in the union. As much as we don’t want to have to have facilities like this in St. Thomas, if we do, why not be the best.”

Trepanier estimated The Grace Cafe serves between 500 and 550 meals per week, working out to around 80 per day.

That kind of volume, she said, proves the need for the types of services the cafe provides.

However, it also shows the cafe has established itself as an integral part of St. Thomas.

“People are hungry. Now that we’ve been here going on two-and-a-half years, people know where we are, and we’re dependable,” Trepanier said. “That’s huge to achieve that.

People with mental challenges, they know we’re here. To acquire a large place, we don’t want to do that. This is our home.”

The Libro LIFT program is contributing $47,575 to 31 organizations throughout southwestern Ontario.

Family Flowers hosted its fifth annual Dog’s Day Out event on Feb. 25, opening up their doors to upwards of 100 four-legged friends to socialize and enjoy a taste of the tropics.

“Sometimes winter can seem so long — maybe not so much this year — and that goes for our pets too,” said Family Flowers retail manager Jacklyn Versnick. “So this is a chance for people to get out of the house and give them something fun to do with their dogs.”

The greenhouses at Family Flowers offer seasonal flowers and plants, while also

providing kids (of all ages) to visit and feed the animals in the mini farm, and browse through decor for both their home and garden.

Participants in Dog’s Day Out were invited to browse the onsite vendors, pick up a free sample of dog food, and take a round on the indoor winter walking club trail.

For Allison Dykxhoorn, who was joined at Dog’s Day Out by her sister Karen and their dogs Cooper and Heidi, the event offers a nice distraction on a mid-winter day.

“I came last year and we had fun. There’s not a lot of places for dogs to get out in the winter, even though this one hasn’t been so bad,” she said. “It’s just a fun outing so I’m glad they have it.”

Even though a recently stolen car has been recovered, St. Thomas police are reminding the public to keep their vehicles locked.

On Feb. 22, a local resident parked their car in the downtown core. When the owner returned a short time later, they discovered the vehicle had been stolen.

The vehicle was subsequently recovered in London on Feb. 25, with two St. Thomas residents arrested in possession of the vehicle.

Further investigation revealed the two suspects had been actively entering unlocked vehicles in the St. Thomas and London areas, looking for items such as identification, credit cards and other items of value. The London Police Service has charged the individuals with numerous offences.

St. Thomas police would like to remind the public of the importance of locking vehicles, even if they only plan on being out of it for a short time. This will help crack down on the opportunistic thieves.

Citizen tip leads to impaired drug charge A citizen tip led St. Thomas police to lay a charge of impaired driving by drug.

On Feb. 24, in the early afternoon, the St. Thomas police responded to the report of a possible impaired driver in the east end of the city. The vehicle was followed by a citizen, which was eventually involved in a minor collision.

Officers arrived on scene shortly after and spoke with the driver. Immediately the ­officer noted that the driver was having ­difficulty speaking and standing, however alcohol was not a factor. The driver was suspected of ­being under the influence of a narcotic and was arrested.

A drug recognition officer from another local police service attended and confirmed the original suspicion and the driver was charged with driving while ability impaired by drug.

Wanted woman found passed out A St. Thomas woman wanted by police ended up in custody after being found passed out downtown.

An unresponsive woman was located in the entranceway of a downtown business around 7:45 p.m. on Feb. 23. A St. Thomas police officer on patrol was flagged down by a passerby, leading to the accused.

The officer observed the woman sitting down and checked for vital signs.

It was determined she was breathing, however was heavily intoxicated. EMS attended the scene to assess her condition.

Through investigation police were able to obtain her identity and it was discovered she was currently wanted. As a result of the incident, the 32 year old was arrested and transported to the police station where she was held pending a bail hearing.

She was charged with being intoxicated in a public place, breach of recognizance and breach of undertaking.

Having no insurance is a big fine A 32-year-old woman from St. Thomas is facing charges, including driving without insurance, after a traffic stop on Talbot Street.

Shortly after 9 a.m. on Feb. 21, a St. Thomas police officer was on Talbot Street and used the information technology mobile data terminal to check on the vehicle in front of him.

A check of the vehicle showed unconfirmed insurance information.

After the investigation was complete the driver was charged with driving a motor vehicle with no insurance, failure to change address on licence and failure to change address on permit. Failing to have insurance carries a maximum fine of $5,000.

Operating with no licence plates St. Thomas police laid multiple charges after a loaded tow truck was spotted driving with no licence plates.

Shortly before 11 a.m. on Feb. 21, officers spotted the truck leaving a local plaza heading east down Talbot Street.

During traffic stop it became obvious the vehicle that it was hauling was insecure. The driver was also unable to provide inspection documents.

As a result of the traffic stop, the registered owner of the truck was charged with failing to supply driver with daily inspection schedule, permit operation with load not secure, defective braking system, and overweight vehicle.

The driver was charged with failing to display two plates, insecure load, and failure to surrender inspection report.

Co-operation is essential, but so too is the power of municipal positivity.

These were the key messages from the mayors of St. Thomas, Central Elgin and Southwold Township as they took to the stage at the St. Thomas and District Chamber of Commerce’s seventh annual State of the Municipalities luncheon.

Held before about 150 people on Feb. 22 at the St. Anne’s Centre, the gathering allowed each speaker to promote the highlights of their own community, but each one also took the time to talk about the necessity of working in co-operation.

“We all seem to know that it’s not going to happen on our own,” said St. Thomas Mayor Heather Jackson.

“The City of St. Thomas can’t do everything on its own and neither can the county or the municipalities within it. We need to work together as a region to market ourselves, to attract new business and industries and families.”

Jackson said things are “going exceptionally good,” in St. Thomas, as she took time to highlight numerous municipal achievements.

Central Elgin Mayor David Marr said the message from his municipal-

ity is “very positive,” with growth being seen from one end of the community to the other.

Marr spoke about plans for the Belmont Library, the Hawk Cliff Talbot Land Trust, and subdivisions in Lynhurst and Sunset Bluffs in Port Stanley. However, development of the harbourfront had him most excited.

“The growth in Port Stanley . . . we received funds (from the 2010

divestiture) and with that and have been able to open our horizons,” Marr said. “We have more than 30 acres of prime waterfront land to be developed and we’re started with that now.

Over the year we will come up with a vision and a plan for that area.”

Marr focused on the positives, but like Jackson, he also wanted people to know the negative things aren’t simply being ignored. He added people are “tired of hearing all the negativity,” and so the luncheon is an opportunity to focus on “all the good stories” that are happening in Central Elgin.

As both the mayor of Southwold Township and Elgin County Warden, Grant Jones found himself doing double-duty at the luncheon.

A purple shadow of doubt Healing your broken heart MICKEY’S WORLD Mickey Reid

“You look a little tired.”

I was always surprised when I heard that comment, usually on a day when I was well rested and felt great. It was very puzzling.

Determined to find the answer, I used the Sherlock Holmes method. “When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”

Highly improbable . . . but true . . . purple eyeshadow was the culprit.

A lot of trial and error went into this conclusion. There is not enough space to explain the numerous rules for applying makeup.

Obviously, I’d broken one along the way. Apparently, specific eyeshadow shades are more suited to one’s individual eye colour.

My eyes are brown. Possibly the inadvertent combination of brown and purple is too reminiscent of the sky’s hue just before a tornado strikes.

Along with millions of other women, I use cosmetics to enhance my features. The science of the industry is astounding. Today, you can find foundation, concealer, blush, or powder to absolutely match your skin tone.

Certain products claim to visibly reduce your flaws (otherwise known as wrinkles).

Focus now is on full lashes, whether real or false, and expertly defined brows. I’m experimenting with these updated ideas, trying not to resemble Groucho Marx or an emoticon.

High cheekbones are also an extremely popular “look,” achieved with practiced highlighting and shading techniques. My previous inaccurate choice of “purple” shadow made this procedure daunting, but I managed to replicate the effect quite naturally.

I let gravity do it.

As with fashion, beauty trends come and go. One season showcases a soft, natural effect, skillfully created using subtle, nude shades. The following month’s runway presents dark brows, smoldering eyes, colourful cheeks, and bold lips.

Its hard to keep up. My current cosmetic bag could double as take-on luggage.

Once realizing a single colour gaffe can change your appearance, I invested in a mirror featuring true lighting for daytime, office, and evening.

It works best if you’re able to stay in one setting most of the time. The individual brand name boutiques offer a wealth of information. If their representative should fall within my age-group and looks amazing, I’ll happily buy a dozen of whatever she’s selling.

As long as its not purple eyeshadow.

The Oscar Night Massacre AS I SEE IT Rick Wellwood

Sunday night’s Oscar broadcast was a disappointment, partly because of the hosting failure of Jimmy Kimmel and the snafu with the envelopes for Best Picture.

It was an embarrassment for presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, but more so for La La Land, a wonderful musical given the honour in error. The real winner was Moonlight, a serious drama about a gay black man. Price Waterhouse Coopers, the accounting firm in charge of the envelopes takes the blame. It was a real mess and a now a part of the history of the Academy Awards. The mess distracted the audience from another screwup in the show because the memorial segment gave praise to the departed members of the industry.

It looked good, except for the complete absence of the late Alan Rickman, a brilliant and deserving actor. Taken last year by cancer.

It was a shame, even though he is no longer around to be upset about the snub.

The Sunday night snafu reminded me of an episode here in Canada at the theatre prize given out at the Chalmers Award for Best Playwright. Herb Whittaker of the Globe and Mail gave the award and an additional few thousand dollars to a playwright who immediately gave all the money to a struggling theatre group in Newfoundland.

It was really embarrassing for the playwright and for Whittaker, since the prize was supposed to go to London Ontario poet and playwright, the late James Reaney for his final play in his Donnelly Trilogy.

I sat next to Jamie on the homeward-bound train as he sat quietly with closed eyes. He was lost in thought and I presumed that his musings were private.

I thought then that was the only awards screw-up I would see.

St. Thomas celebrates cultural diversity

The St. Thomas-Elgin Local Immigration Partnership (STELIP) is a community initiative to facilitate the integration of newcomers into both the Railway City and the wider county.

With a mission like that, it makes sense to bring people together through food, music and a celebration of local diversity.

That celebration took place Feb. 22 during STELIP’s fourth Moving Forward event, which this year took the form of a cultural bazaar.

“It’s a celebration of the work STELIP does in the community,” said STELIP project facilitator Rachel LeClair. “We just really want to showcase what our organization does, what our partners at the tables do, and we also want to celebrate local cultural diversity. Every year we try to mix it up and this year we thought why not a cultural bazaar?”

Taking place at the St. Thomas Senior Centre, the bazaar included 11 countries or communities — depending on how they identified — sharing dance and musical performances, information booths, interactive activities, international flavours, and other cultural endeavours.

The program began with an smudging ceremony, led by craftsman Hugh Hill, a ­ member of Oneida Nation of the Thames.

Hill said one of the best parts of Moving Forward, particularly in the new cultural bazaar, was the openness and — perhaps not surprisingly — the inclusiveness of the event.

The creation of a welcoming atmosphere is one reason Hill said he sees the bazaar as an important endeavour.

“We see a lot more cultures represented and a lot more people coming and asking questions. That’s a good thing,” he said.

“In other atmospheres I’ve been in, it hasn’t been as open and people are a bit more timid.

They are, I don’t know if I should ask, or do you mind if I ask a question? In this atmosphere, they are just willing to come up and ask.”

Iffat Farooqui is a nearly 30-year resident of St. Thomas, a henna artist and a member of STELIP’s Cultural Diversity Committee, which LeClair praised in having taken the lead on organizing the bazaar.

The bazaar is important, she explained, because it builds awareness without participants having to go very far from home.

Given the increasing global divisions around immigration, she said embracing diversity is essential.

“With what the world is becoming now I think it’s very important to ask questions rather than be scared, whether it’s religion, culture, countries; whatever,” Farooqui said.

“I can introduce my culture, my religion, my country. Even though I have never lived in Pakistan — I was born in England, raised in Kuwait, and now live in Canada — my grandparents are there, my culture is from there. This is definitely a comfortable place to ask questions. That’s why I’m here.”

What Vaccinations Does My Adult Dog Need?

Over the past several months, I have had several clients come to me with questions about vaccines and their dogs.

The most common questions are “does my dog need vaccinations?” and “do I need to vaccinate my dog every year?”. I wish I could say that there is a simple, straight forward answer to these but there isn’t. It really depends on where you live, what your pet is exposed to, their age, and their health status.

Let’s start with the vaccines themselves, what exactly is your dog being vaccinated against? Not all dogs need to be vaccinated for all of the diseases all of the time. We generally group the vaccines into two categories – the ‘core’ and ‘non-core’ vaccines.

Core vaccines are the ones that prevent diseases that are easily spread, are found in most places, and your pet is likely to be exposed to them. These diseases are extremely difficult to treat and are usually fatal to our pets. Core vaccines include • Canine Distemper • Canine Parvovirus • Canine Adenovirus • Rabies Rabies in particular can be transmitted to people, and in our area (Ontario Canada) vaccination against this disease is required by law.

Non-core vaccines protect against diseases that not all dogs may be exposed to. These vaccines are recommended by a veterinarian based on risk assessment looking at your local are and the incidence of these diseases. The life style of the pet, risk of infection, and severity of disease are also considered when looking at these vaccines. Non-core vaccines may include • Leptospirosis – a disease found in environments like parks/ponds or areas where wildlife frequent • Coronavirus – transmitted from dog to dog, places where dogs interact with each other are risk areas • Giardia – found around waterways, ponds, and wildlife environments – although not considered a high risk source, this disease may be transmitted to people • Lyme Disease – transmitted by deer ticks and should be considered in areas where deer are found. Yearly testing and tick preventatives are also recommended • Canine Cough – this includes Bordetella and Parainfluenza vaccines. These are respiratory infections and are transmitted from dog to dog. Boarding facilities, dog shows, dog classes, and parks where dogs play are all potential risks Regardless of which vaccine program your pet is on, all dogs should be examined by a veterinarian at least yearly and a complete history and risk assessment should be performed.

This will assure that your dog remains healthy and is appropriately vaccinated.

It used to be called the Golden Rule, the way to keep kids safe while online. Putting the computer in a highly visible space in your home and your kids would be safe, right? Not anymore.

However, the St. Thomas Police Service is concerned the old rules for practicing cyber security for kids no longer apply.

In a media release, the police are reminding the public cell phones are no longer just phones.

They are a lot smarter now; they are basically

a computer that fits into your pocket. With the capabilities of smartphones and tablets, and the availability of Wi-Fi at almost every restaurant, kids can connect just about anywhere. This can be problematic for parents who want to monitor their children and their online activities.

There is a Canadian web page that police describe as “an excellent tool and teaching guide” for parents to help build an online safety net for their children and assist them in communicating

the dangers that they may encounter. That website is www.thedoorthatsnotlocked.ca.

Parents, according to police, should talk to their children about safe use of the Internet and the importance of passwords and never releasing personal information.

Cork Cork flooring has gained immense popularity in recent years, for many reasons. In terms of being a good choice for seniors, cork has a lot going for it. First, it’s easy to clean. Hardwood floor Hardwood floors are easy to maintain and are easy to both walk and wheel over. They don’t offer much cushioning in the event of a fall, however.

Ceramic tile Although some types of ceramic tile are very slippery and therefore not ideal for those with mobility issues, there are some slip-resistant varieties. Look for one that has a high co-efficient of friction. And although ceramic tiles are characteristically cold on the feet, it is possible to install a radiant heating system in the floor to keep the tiles warm.

Vinyl / Cushion Flooring This is probably the most manageable type of flooring to keep clean. Most types of vinyl flooring are easy to clean and spills can easily be taken care of. A simple sweeping job will keep this type of floor clean. On the downside, vinyl offers little to no protection in the event of a fall.

Carpet Carpet is a good choice because it offers a soft surface in case of falls, which is often a concern for older adults. It’s also non slip and provides similar insulating properties as cork. The major downside is that you will have to vacuum it, and if you have any respiratory issues (asthma, etc.) you may find your symptoms are exacerbated by dust and other particles being trapped in the carpet fibres.

Choosing the correct type of flooring will help to keep you safe when mobility decreases. In addition, the right choice will help you to keep the floor clean without a lot of effort.

Which ever kind you choose, be sure to have your flooring professionally installed to ensure it is done properly. Loose tiles, improperly installed carpet, or vinyl flooring can pose safety hazards.

Pay attention to these roofing problems Now that spring is on the horizon, your roof may be showing some evidence of the ravages of winter. From snow and extreme temperatures to general wear and tear, roofs can really take a beating over the winter months.

This spring, take notice of the following warning signs that may signal the need for some roof maintenance. Don’t wait until you are scurrying around looking for a bucket to catch the leaks!

There’s no need to go up on your roof to do these checks. They can be done from the safety of solid ground.

Granulation Take a walk around the perimeter of your home and check the ground for granulation, or the presence of those small roofing pebbles that are characteristically adhered to standard shingles. If the granules are coming off easily enough to fall to the ground, it’s a good sign that your shingles are in need of being replaced.

Improper shingle coverage Look up – way up! Are there any shingles that are pulling up at the edges, visibly cracked, or even altogether missing? Missing or improperly adhered shingles won’t effectively do their job, and they should be addressed immediately. Otherwise, your roof

will be left vulnerable.

Check your gutters Are your gutters cleaned out? If not, be sure to address that. Gutters are designed to allow rainwater and snow to be diverted off of the roof and away from the house. If they are blocked, the water has nowhere to go. When that happens, water will build up in the gutters and eventually seep in between the shingles. This can potentially cause rotting of the roof decking or, even worse, leak into your home. Clean gutters will allow water to get where it needs to go.

Moss It has been said that a rolling stone gathers no moss, but if that moss is growing on your roof, it’s bad news. Although it’s easy enough to remove moss from the roof with a long broom, it’s important to note that the presence of moss can be indicative of a more serious problem. If moss continues to build up it can lead to rotting in the roof decking.

If you do find issues with your roof, don’t turn a blind eye out of fear of the cost of roof replacement. In many cases, it’s possible to repair the issues without replacing the roof entirely. However, if your roof is more than 15 years old, it’s probably wise to consider a full-roof replacement.

Elgin County recently announced the first round of Elgincentives Community Improvement Plan (CIP) grants for 2017 have been approved.

In November 2016, the Ontario Professional Planners’ Institute honoured the program with an Excellence in Planning Award in the Municipal Statutory Planning category.

Now in its third year of operation this award-winning program is having a visible impact on the county’s downtowns and tourism corridors. Since its inception in October 2015, the program has approved 58 applications for a total of $390,000 in grants for projects valuing almost $1.5 million.

Kevin Jackson is confident Elgin County is a leader in understanding the importance of equity between men and women in today’s workforce.

However, the general manager of the Elgin Business Resource Centre (EBRC) is just as sure that isn’t the case globally.

“For anybody, male, female or whomever, entrepreneurism is valid for all.

Women have every opportunity, it’s still not showing if you look at the national, international picture,” Jackson said. “At ERBC people get paid the same whether male or female, across the board, and I would like to think many organizations in our community are that way. Across the world, though, the sad reality is that’s not the case.”

In recognition of this situation, ERBC is hosting a celebration of women in business on Tuesday, March 7 — the day before International Women’s Day. Set for 7-9 p.m. at the ERBC’s ICE Atrium, the forum will feature Karyn Silliker, recently retired from Meridian Credit Union, and St. Thomas’s Trish Faber, writer, creator, storyteller and businesswoman.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is Be Bold for Change — so Tara McCaulley found perhaps the ideal person to serve as keynote speaker around this very idea.

McCaulley is manager of the Elgin/St. Thomas Small ­Business Enterprise Centre, which is hosting its fifth annual Celebrating Women In Business event on International Women’s Day, Wednesday, March 8.

The event, set for the CASO Station, will include a tradeshow celebrating 25 local, women business owners and then a keynote address from best-selling author and leadership expert Paula Morand.

“With this year’s International Women’s Day theme Be Bold for Change, if you go to Paula’s website, it’s bold,” McCaulley said. “I love the concept she has and we’re excited to have her.”

Morand is also excited to be coming to St. Thomas — she lives in London — as it speaks to both her personal campaign of Dream Big Be Bold, but also how that fits with the theme of Be Bold for Change.

Of course, it helps Morand’s latest book is titled Bold Courage.

“I think bold is important, but courage is important as well.

One of the things I’ve known as a business and executive coach for almost two-and-a-half decades, often it isn’t the business model that’s the issue. It’s the confidence of the person tasked to lead,” she said. “What are the tools and perspectives we can bring to the table to own our awesome in a more significant way? How can we increase our impact in a tangible way with smart outcomes?”

Normally Morand’s schedule is booked up years in advance.

However, when a booking she had for the day fell through, she was able to accept McCaulley’s offer.

Morand said she welcomed the opportunity because she “loves supporting small business,” which she strongly believes is the backbone of the world economy.

There are so many resources available for start-ups today, she explains, adding there is a lot of work that goes into being self-employed.

Fortunately, Morand said, there are always opportunities to “help people get through the weeds,” try to make strategic

“As women, and women in business, we have a mindset that together is better. Competitive is good too. Sometimes people think women in business are all hearts and flowers, there is this myth women don’t have what it takes to compete on a national, global stage . . . we are too heart-centred,” Morand said. “At the end of the day, women are great problem solvers, they will find resources and figure it out, often not letting their ego get in the way. They roll up their sleeves and get the job done.”

The Railway City Arts Crawl returned to dazzle crowds across downtown St. Thomas, packing in artistic talents of all shapes, sizes and — as it turns out — ages as well.

Now in its fourth year, the crawl showcased more than 50 regional artists in 15 venues during the two-day event that wrapped up Feb. 25.

One of those venues, the Back Alley Bar & Grill, featured a half-dozen dynamic artists, including 14-year-old Lilly Wraight, surely among the crawl’s youngest contributors.

“I’ve always liked art, going to the [St. Thomas Elgin Public] Arts Centre. It’s very inspirational,” she said.

“I started drawing a couple years ago, but really I like drawing, painting, all kinds of things.”

While also showing off some of her previous works, Wraight had drawn up a flower-filled piece that passers-by could then help colour in with the use of pastels she had on hand.

Her plan is to donate the piece to a future charity auction since so many people helped her with it.

“I think it’s a super cool way for all of the artists to get their work out,” she said.

“I love everybody’s style and it’s so nice for me to connect with other artists who have so much more experience than I do.”
