Recap: Ahuva finds out that Brocha is coming home. Chaim Sternstein meets with Mr. Shmuel Zone to ask for forgiveness for letting the rumors go on about him when he knew that the accident was a result of his own negligence.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR:

You can move on, but not forget. You can find a modicum of peace, but not complete serenity. That was what I learned after helping Ahuva out in middle of class. No, there was no way that we could make up and reignite our friendship, there was too much water under the bridge for that. But I could still stop thinking about it so often. I could quash the never-ending choruses of could’ve, should’ve, would’ve that rang in my mind, and I can, to some extent, close that chapter of my life. Even when I saw her every day in school, and even when I watched her become friends with Rachelli.

My friendship with Sara had deepened and we shared a wonderful, uncomplicated relationship. I still walked home with Rachelli, and even allowed Ahuva to join sometimes. Most times, she shied away, but I stayed neutral about it when she did decide to join us. Sweet, short, and cordialthat was my motto for the walks home when she joined us.

The end of eleventh grade was nearing, and I couldn’t have been more ready. The year had been tough, but I was tougher. I learned to let go of the past, to not get too emotional about things out of control, but most of all, to accept that everything that happened to me was for the best and meant to be.

I was ready for another year of growth. I was ready for anything. ***

How many times had he begged, pleaded, cried for this moment to last forever? It was simply not meant to be. The month was over, and Brocha was headed towards her new home.

Chaim’s steps held the weight of the world as he escorted his child to her new home.

Laya had preferred to remain at home. The family that they had found lived in Cleveland, and Chaim had chosen to drive the long drive from Brooklyn to Cleveland. He wanted to hold every hour in his hand and keep it in his heart forever. His heart was heavy with disappointment. He had hoped that things would change with Brocha back at home. He thought that Laya’s heart would soften, her outlook would mellow, that things would change.

It wasn’t meant to be. He walked up the stairs to the new family and prayed that his Brocha would be surrounded by love and understanding.

Every step that he took felt final. It echoed madly in his heart, as the door was opened by a tall man. Every step back to his car after that took so much energy, energy that he didn’t have. It was over. He was closing the door to this chapter of his life.

His Brocha was officially adopted. Despite his protests, despite the wrongness of it all, despite the piercing pain, the hollow hole in his very being, his daughter was no longer his own.

Defeated, broken, and very much alone, Chaim Sternstein allowed himself to cry as he began the long journey home. ***

Progress comes in baby steps. Ahuva was learning that, watching her progress unfold at a painstaking pace. It was on and off with the pulling, some days better than others. But she was ready to fight the invisible enemy. She was worth it.

Having Brocha at home had imbued her with a new appreciation for her life. Her life, full of conveniences, of health and family that she took for granted.

“Thanks Mom, for this treat!” Ahuva smiled at her mother as they browsed through the clothing racks. Her mother lifted a skirt and added it to the pile.

Later, when they finished their successful shopping trip, Ahuva sank into her soft mattress and sat, thinking about her relationship with her mother. So much had changed this year. Their relationship had

been strengthened and her anger had been replaced by understanding. She no longer felt the need to lash out as often and she was even comfortable sharing her feelings with her mother. She had grown and shed old scars along the way.

No, her relationship wasn’t perfect. But then again, not much of anything was perfect. Life was filled with people, and as long as she lived, she knew that relationships were complicated. Complicated, but worth it. Complicated, but doable.

Come what may, Ahuva was ready to face the ins and outs of navigating relationships. Because everything was better and more doable with another person. Ahuva was done with loneliness, she was ready to reach out and water a relationship until it thrived.

The world didn’t start and end with Tehilla, and slowly, the old hurt was fading away, slowly, it was being replaced with a blossom of hope. ***

Chaim’s hands shook as he placed the phone back in its receiver. He wanted to grab a microphone and shout to the world, “I am free! I am free!” Free to do what? Free to live with a light and happy heart. After many years, he had been forgiven.

A heavy stone on his heart had lifted, years of aching pain had been replaced with…peace. A newfound peace spread over his entire essence as he stared at the phone once again. Most importantly, when Mr. Zone had asked in a trembling voice, “Do you forgive me for the accident? Do you forgive me for the inexplicable pain that I can promise was unintentional?”

When Chaim answered “yes” in a strangled voice, he felt the hurt sprout wings and softly flutter goodbye as it flew off into the horizon. Nothing had really changed, but Chaim felt like a brand new person. His step was lighter and it was time to start living in the present. After all, the past was lived and re-lived, and the present suddenly felt comforting and okay.

It was time to truly move on.

“We’d like to thank our principals for helping us and guiding us in our every endeavor, including this fabulous performance. We couldn’t have done it without you.”

Chava watched in the audience as Tehilla recited the speech and felt her eyes well up with tears. Tehilla had worked so hard on this performance and had been so excited when she was chosen to head it.

Watching the beautiful play unfold, Chava reflected that there was bound to be a happy ending. The kind of ending that tied everything up beautifully and left the audience smiling. No loose ends, no questions unanswered.

But life wasn’t like that. Not at all. Yes, Tehilla had grown and even thrived this year. Was it the old Tehilla? No. Could she be okay with that?

Watching her daughter interact with the girls and glow on stage at the finale, Chava concluded that she could be okay. Tehilla was doing so well. So much better than she ever dreamed. Was she destined for the old beaten path that Chava had hoped for her? Probably not.

But that didn’t take away from her tremendous resilience and determination to persevere. Her daughter was a fighter, and Chava was proud. She was still paralyzed. Still hoping for a complete recovery. Still wishing that the old rumor about her family wouldn’t have started, and still wishing that she knew who that mystery someone was. But in her heart, she had accepted that she would never know. She would focus on the gift of life, on the gift of watching her daughter shine in an environment that allowed her to.

As the lights dimmed and the final scene ended, Chava was ready to accept the past and dim the lights to the unfairness of it all.

Her story didn’t have a perfect ending, but who said that perfect was the goal?

The audience broke out into applause, and from afar, Chava saw her daughter running towards her. She opened her arms as Tehilla fell into her embrace.

And suddenly, the final scene felt perfect, just the way it was meant to be.

BE FIT WITH BENEFIT

AToday we will dive into the concept of body mass index otherwise known as BMI. We will break down how it is calculated and why we should take it with a grain of salt. We will also tap into alternative ways to calculate a healthy weight.

BMI is like a numerical gauge that tries to tell you if you are underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese. The formula is pretty simple. You divide your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared (BMI=weight in kg/ (height in meters) But here is the catch: the simplicity of BMI comes with a few flaws.

1. BMI does not take into account your body composition. It doesn’t care if you have muscles of steel or no muscle at all. It simply lumps everything together based on your weight and height. You can have a woman that hits the gym regularly and eats loads of protein,

but according to the BMI system, she falls into the “obese” category. Why is that? Because she has more weight from her muscle mass. This is inaccurate!

2. BMI does not consider what your fat actually is. It does not care if you are carrying around fat in your abdominal area, or visceral fat, fat around your organs. You can have a perfectly good BMI calculation, but if you were to measure your waist you would notice that your larger waistline could be an indicator of potential health risks. So once again, the BMI cannot indicate if one is healthy or not.

3. BMI was developed based on studies on certain ethnic groups. But we are all unique beings with personal lives, genetics, and predispositions. We also have different metabolic rates and diverse body

compositions. BMI fails to take all this into consideration.

So, if BMI is flawed, what is a better way to see if our weight is in the healthy range? WHR looks at the distribution of fat by comparing your waist circumference to your hip circumference. A higher ratio can indicate health issues. Measuring your waist might not be the most exciting thing, but it can give you an idea of your abdominal fat accumulation. A larger waist circumference can be an indicator of potential health problems down the road.

While BMI has been the go-to measurement for a long time, it is time to break free from its limitations. BMI can be misleading. It is also clear that weight is just one piece of the puzzle when it comes to our health. Embracing other measurement methods can help us paint a more complete picture of our health.

QI am confused by the BMI chart. My doctor always refers to the “chart” but I get conflicting messages when speaking to people. Can you give me some info on this concept?

HUMMUS & LIVER FLATBREADS

Simple, savory, and delicious!

Ingredients:

Pizza Crust Rounds

Chicken Liver-see recipe

Chummus

Extra Virgin Olive Oil, for drizzling

Freshly ground black pepper

Fresh parsley or parsley flakes, for garnish

Directions:

1. Smear about 2 tablespoons hummus on each pizza crust round. Top with chicken liver and drizzle with olive oil.

2. Follow one of the options below:

Grill: on medium heat for about 2-3 minutes

Bake: on a lined baking sheet, at 350° for 5 min

Betty Crocker: for about 5-7 min

3. Garnish with freshly ground black pepper and parsley.

CHICKEN LIVER

Ingredients:

3-4 tablespoons oil, for frying

1 large white onion, thinly sliced

½ lb. chicken liver, cut into small pieces

1 teaspoon salt

1-2 tablespoon brown sugar

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions:

1. Heat oil in a small pan and sauté onions, salt, and sugar on low-medium heat for about 15-20 minutes until caramelized.

2. Add the chicken liver and season with black pepper. Cook for an additional 5 minutes on high heat until the liver is browned.

DELI PIZZA WITH MAPLE GARLIC AIOLI

The deli sandwich, but way better.

Ingredients:

2 pizza crust rounds

2-4 cubes frozen onions, thawed (or 1 onion, caramelized)

1 6 oz pkg. deli meat, sliced into thin strips

Maple Garlic Aioli- see recipe

Israeli pickles, sliced

Pickled onions, for garnish

Freshly cracked black pepper, to taste

Parsley, for garnish

Maple Garlic Aioli:

¾ c mayonnaise

1 ½ tablespoons maple syrup

1 clove garlic, crushed

½ teaspoon fresh lemon juice

1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

Salt, to taste

Directions:

1. Maple Garlic Aioli: In a small bowl or jar, combine all ingredients and whisk/shake until smooth. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

2. Deli Pizza: Smear the Maple Garlic Aioli on top of the pizza crust rounds. Spread the thawed/caramelized onions on top of the aioli and add the sliced deli meat.

3. Follow one of the options below:

Grill: on medium heat for about 2-3 minutes

Bake: on a lined baking sheet, at 350° for 5 min

Betty Crocker: for about 5-7 min

4. Garnish with sliced Isreali pickles, black pepper, pickled onions, and parsley. Serve warm.

SESAME TERIYAKI SALMON PIZZA

A fun hybrid of two family favorites. Yum

Ingredients:

2 pizza crust rounds

2 Sesame Teriyaki Salmon Fillets- see recipe

Spicy Mayo-see recipe

Black sesame seeds

1 ripe avocado, sliced (optional)

1 red chili pepper, sliced

1 scallion, thinly sliced

Sweet sauce

Shortcut Sesame Teriyaki Salmon:

2 Sesame Teriyaki salmon fillets

Freunds Sesame Teriyaki Sauce

Black sesame seeds

Spicy Mayo:

½ cup mayonnaise

2 tablespoons sriracha hot sauce

1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lime juice

Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Directions:

1. Sesame Teriyaki Salmon: Preheat oven to 350° and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. Rinse salmon and pat dry. Smear Sesame Teriyaki Sauce on top of the fish and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for about 20-25 minutes, until fish flakes easily.

3. Spicy Mayo: In a small bowl, whisk all ingredients until smooth.

4. Assembly: Smear spicy mayo on top of the pizza crust rounds.

5. Using a fork, flake the baked Sesame Teriyaki salmon. Add the flaked salmon on top of the spicy mayo.

6. Follow one of the options below:

Grill: on medium heat for about 2-3 minutes

Bake: on a lined baking sheet, at 350° for 5 min

Betty Crocker: for about 5-7 min

5. Garnish with black sesame seeds, sliced avocado, chili pepper, and scallions. Drizzle with spicy mayo and Sesame Teriyaki. Serve.

MEET CAULIFLOWER AGAIN (a series)

4 servings

INGREDIENTS

20 minutes

◆ 1 head cauliflower cut into florets (or 2 boxes freshly checked cauliflower)

◆ 3 Tbsp oil

◆ 1 tsp salt

◆ 1 Tbsp curry powder

◆ 1 tsp garlic powder

◆ 2 tsp lemon juice

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 500°F, or use an air fryer.

2. Season the cauliflower on a greased sheet pan and toss well.

3. Bake uncovered for 15 min.

4. Enjoy as is or use in one of the recipes below

FYI: Curry powder is an Indian spice blend. Besides for it being so pungent and flavorful, its main ingredient is turmeric, which is a natural health supplement. Turmeric aids in protection against joint pain and other inflammation, fights bacterial infection, and supports mental and emotional health.

BTW: If you're going to use disposables, let it be gloves. Toss ingredients "by hand" so the flavors blend well while keeping your hands, mixing spoons, countertops, and food clean.

Part 1

Many stories told about the challenge of technology often end with an open miracle, incredible salvation, or a shocking turnaround that sets everything right. Nobody tells the stories about Mesirus Nefesh that don’t necessarily culminate in a breathtaking display of Siyata Dishmaya. Nobody shares the stories when they stayed true to the Torah principles, against all odds. Nobody describes how they grappled with naysayers and fought inner wars before emerging triumphant, with their values intact.

I want to share such a story. Spoiler Alert: It does end with a miracle for which we are constantly thanking Hashem – but that is not the point of my story. I want to tell you about my determination not to drop my standards by an iota, even though everyone insisted that it was inevitable. I want to share with you the struggle and the challenge. Maybe you, too, will gather the courage to do what’s right as a result of reading about our incredible journey.

We had been married for just a year when our beautiful baby girl was born. She was born with a serious heart defect that required a complex 16-hour heart surgery by a top-notch surgeon. Extensive research, aided by dedicated medical askanim, made it very obvious that our only option was a hospital in San Francisco. We needed to get there as soon as possible.

San Francisco! In Yiddish parlance, the area was a desert. There was a Chabad shaliach nearby, but there weren’t any kosher groceries or amenities. I was headed to Silicon Valley; the breadbasket of today’s digital age. All the who’s who of social media sourced their products and labor right there.

I was at a loss. How would I get around in this uber-digital neighborhood with just my text-free flip-phone for help? It seemed impossible.

Others who had been there before me, in similar circumstances, assured me that it truly was impossible! They offered good advice. They warned me that I must take along a Smartphone – not for convenience, but for necessity. I even heard from a respected Talmud Chochom who had been there with a child. He said that he’d tried to get by without a Smartphone but he realized that it was impossible.

Transportation was the biggest issue. San Francisco didn’t have taxis roaming the streets. There weren’t any local car-service companies that you could call when you needed to get from Point A to Point B. The only option was to drive your own car. Considering that I had never gotten my license, that was obviously unrealistic.

What did non-drivers do in San Francisco? They used Lyft and Uber. Easy as pie…if you had a Smartphone, of course.

Another big hurdle was directions – or the lack thereof. Without Google Maps, how would I get around in an unfamiliar neighborhood? The contact with doctors was another sticking point. Doctors don’t call you on the telephone, nor do they invite you for a friendly chat. They use email, or – begrudgingly – text messaging.

Everything – literally everything – works via Internet. I was good and truly stuck.

But I didn’t give up – or give in.

Early symptoms of Lyme disease usually happen within 3 to 30 days after a tick bite. Other stage 1 symptoms include:

• Fever.

• Headache.

• Extreme tiredness.

• Joint stiffness.

• Muscle aches and pains.

• Swollen lymph nodes.

Stage 2

Without treatment, Lyme disease can get worse. The symptoms often show up within 3 to 10 weeks after a tick bite. Stage 2 is often more serious and widespread.

Stage 2 may include the stage 1 symptoms and the following:

• Many rashes on other parts of the body.

• Neck pain or stiffness.

• Muscle weakness on one or both sides of the face.

• Immune-system activity in heart tissue that causes irregular heartbeats.

• Pain that starts from the back and hips and spreads to the legs.

• Pain, numbness or weakness in the hands or feet.

• Painful swelling in tissues of the eye or eyelid.

• Immune-system activity in eye nerves that causes pain or vision loss.

Stage 3

In the third stage, you may have symptoms from the earlier stages and other symptoms.

The most common condition of this stage is arthritis in large joints, particularly the knees. Pain, swelling or stiffness may last for a long time. Or the symptoms may come and go. Stage 3 symptoms usually begin 2 to 12 months after a tick bite.

When to see a doctor

See your healthcare provider if:

If you have any of the symptoms described above or if you see a tick attached to the skin it is time to see your health care provider. The provider will examine the patient and – if there is a tick attached – they will remove the tick and determine if it is a

overgrown fields. After a tick attaches to your body, it often crawls upward to find a spot to burrow into your skin.

Use tick repellents

Spray your outdoor clothing, shoes, tent and other camping gear with a repellent that has 0.5% permethrin.

Use an insect repellent registered with the Environmental Protection Agency on any exposed skin, except your face. These include repellents that contain DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD) or 2-undecanone. Wear light-colored clothing that makes it easier for you or others to see ticks on your clothing. Avoid open-toed shoes or sandals.

Wear long-sleeved shirts tucked into your pants. Wear long pants tucked into your socks.

Stay on clear paths as much as possible in wooded and grassy areas.

Check for ticks

Shower as soon as possible to wash off any loose ticks. Check for ticks that may have burrowed.

Use a mirror to check your body well. Pay attention to your underarms, hair and hairline. Also check your ears, waist, and the area between your legs, behind your knees.

Do a complete body check every day in order to minimize the tick being attached for 24 hours+

Things to note:

It takes 24 hours for the tick to be attached to the skin to be able to transfer Lyme Disease

It may take up to 6 weeks for Lyme disease to show up on bloodwork

Dog ticks typically do not carry Lyme Disease and are larger than Deer ticks

Many healthcare providers will not send out a tick to the lab unless the patient is examined

If a tick is removed at home, preserve it on alcohol till it is brought to the health care center

Dov asks a she’eilah, and the answer he receives is that they should send Martin to Michoel in America with Yosef’s passport. Hinda calls the office to tell Michoel this, and she tries to hint to him that the boy who will be coming will be different from Yosef.

Dr. Jerry lets on to Michoel that they are located near the city of Charleston, but doesn’t give more information than that.

Chani and Penina and their families both come to Hinda and Dov for Shabbos.

CHAPTER SIXTY NINE

“Hi, Yosef. I came to say goodbye.” Martin approached the young man seated in front of the screen in the hospital’s computer room; he seemed to be reading an article on the parshah.

“Huh?” Yosef turned around. “Oh, it’s you… Are you going back to Canada?”

“Yes, the time has come. I’ve been driving… your mother and her husband crazy for too long. They are probably happy to be getting rid of me.”

“I don’t think so,” Yosef said carefully. “Dov is nice because he likes to be, not because he has to be.”

“Yes, I noticed.”

Yosef slowly scratched his left hand for a few long seconds. “Uh…” he murmured, “Um…what did I want to tell you for a long time…? Oh, wait, we went somewhere together recently, right? Where did we go?”

“To renew your passport,” Martin reminded him cautiously. “Oh, right. I’m…sorry for the ruckus I made. What ended up happening?”

Martin took a chair from the next desk and sat down. “Your passport didn’t come out good.”

“Why?”

“Because you didn’t want them to use your picture.”

Now Yosef rubbed the back of his neck. “Right,” he said heavily, as he moved the mouse around on the pad in a circular motion. “Right. Are you going to your house?”

“Well, I don’t have a house, but I’ll figure it out.”

“Maybe you should go to America. We have cousins there; they can help you.”

“Your mother suggested that too.” Martin smiled. “Weisskopf is the name, right?”

“I don’t remember. Maybe. I would go to help Michoel, but…” He turned his head back to the computer. “I am not up to it. It’s too much for me to travel right now.”

Martin nodded neutrally. Dov and Hinda had asked him not to tell Yosef a thing about his plans. Now, looking at the back of Yosef’s head bent over the computer, he waited another three minutes and then said, "Take care, Yosef, and stay well!”. He patted Yosef’s shoulder and stood up.

“Thank you…” Yosef said, without turning his head. But when Martin was at the door of the computer room, Yosef suddenly turned around. “Martin!” he called.

“Yes?”

“If you’re going to America anyway, maybe you should go check up on what’s doing with my uncle?”

“That’s a nice idea.”

“And tell him that I sent you instead of me.”

Martin smiled and waved. ***

His phone rang while he was on the bus back to Haifa. “Is this Martin Posner? Yaron Kornblit here.”

“Oh,” Martin replied. "Yes, it's me."

“I wanted to wish you a safe trip. You’re leaving by the end of this week, right?”

“Yes.”

“To Greater Sudbury?”

“No, to New York.”

“Why there?”

Rivkala beamed now, and she skipped back to my side. We waved at the old lady holding the ice cream sandwich as we continued on our way.

Halfway down the block, I looked back. The old lady was still sitting there, with crowds of humanity passing her by. Most didn’t even stop to smile.

I was so grateful to have had my eyes opened by Mrs. Farkas, just in time to brighten another old lady’s day. ***

That night, I was schmoozing with my mother on the phone, telling her about my day. I mentioned the little incident with the old woman, and told her where my inspiration had come from.

“I don’t think I ever told you about it,” I said, “but when I moved into my house, there was this old lady who used to sit on her porch and every day I told Rivkala to wave to her.”

I told my mother the whole story, including Mrs. Farkas’s revelation and my feelings that I could have done even more. My mother listened carefully, but when I mentioned that it had been Mrs. Farkas’s mother, she let out a little cry of astonishment.

“Her name was Gutwein, you said?” my mother asked. “She was Bubby’s old neighbor in Williamsburg! That’s how I got to know Raizy Farkas so well. Our mothers were so close then, literally like sisters. If you would have only told her that you’re Bubby’s einikel and that Rivkala is named after her…” she let the sentence trail as we both imagined her joy and nachas. Once again, I was overcome. It was a few minutes before I could collect myself and tell my mother the story that had happened that day with the ice cream sandwich.

“I knew that there’s no way for me to know how far my little chessed could go,” I said, “but I didn’t realize just how much I could be missing out if I don’t do the chessed all the way. Imagine if I had only gone that extra step of visiting Mrs. Gutwein just once. Every time Rivkala waved, it would have meant so much more to her.”

“There’s no way for us to know what we really accomplish with what we do,” my mother agreed.

And I knew now for certain that I would be determined not to miss such an opportunity again. •

say, ‘Wait a minute! It’s those neighbors again with the little girl, and she’s waving to me!’ You can’t imagine how excited she was to see your little girl waving at her so happily.”

The emotion in her voice struck me hard. I had never dreamed how much it meant to that old lady that we waved to her every morning. I couldn’t have imagined that she would appreciate it enough to not only tell her daughter about it, but that her daughter would remember it as well. It must have been truly special to her.

“Wow,” I said, feeling emotional myself, “I’m so happy we were able to bring some happiness to your mother like that. It was such a small thing, I never would have known that it meant so much.”

Mrs. Farkas nodded emphatically. “You can’t know what a difference the little things can make. It wasn’t easy for me to travel so often to visit my mother, and she didn’t have any other children living within walking distance. That little wave was sometimes her only reallife interaction with another Yid for the day.” I was overcome. The revelation of what my little deeds could do stirred me. If only I’d done more, as I’d contemplated doing on so many occasions! Just a little wave had meant so much, surely, we could have done even more.

As the party wrapped up and I headed home, Mrs. Farkas’s words reverberated in my head. ***

It wasn’t too long after that I found myself on 13th Avenue, rushing busily to finish my errands so I could be home to put up supper in time. I had my little Yanky in the carriage, and Rivkala, now ten years old, was at my side.

After exchanging the shells I’d bought the wrong size of and picking up the crafts I’d promised Rivkala we would buy, I relaxed a bit as I consulted my list. We were almost done. The last errand I had to do would be on the way home. Now we could stop to take a break and still be home in time.

“Who wants ice cream?” I asked my kids. Yanky, almost two, shouted “Me! Me!” from his Bugaboo seat facing the world. Rivkala dimpled and looked excited.

It was a scorching, humid day, and I knew that they could both use some cooling off. We entered the cool air-conditioned store, where we ordered our refreshing treats.

“We also need to buy for Zevi and Moishy,” Rivkala pointed out seriously. She was right. The boys were playing at their friend’s house, but if they heard that their siblings had had a treat while out with Mommy, Mr. Jealousy was sure to rear its head.

“We can’t buy a cone, though, it will melt all over before we get home!” Rivkala added, chuckling at the thought.

“So what should we get them?” I asked, enjoying her delight as she licked her own frozen treat.

“Let’s get them ice cream sandwiches,” she decided after looking in the window display of boxed ice cream treats. She pulled out a box of them.

“It will also be a Shabbos treat,” I said as I saw how many sandwiches came in the box. There would be plenty left over for later.

Checking my watch again, I wiped off my kids’ faces and quickly paid for the ice cream sandwiches. I hoped they would stay frozen in the sultry heat.

As we turned the corner off Thirteenth, I nearly missed her.

She was a beautiful old lady, sitting with her aide on a bench in her front yard, gazing out on the bustling street. Somehow, she immediately reminded me of Mrs. Gutwein, our neighbor who turned out to be Mrs. Farkas’s mother.

I slowed, then stopped the carriage, looking at her with a big smile.

“Hello,” I said, once I’d caught her attention. Rivkala shuffled her feet uncomfortably at my side. She didn’t like the funny things her Mommy did sometimes.

“It’s hot today, isn’t it?” I asked the woman sitting there, who had returned my smile.

“Very hot,” she agreed, her Eastern European inflection coming through even with just those two words. “But look how many people are out on the street, shopping anyway!”

I nodded, smiling. I was about to wave goodbye and continue on my way, as Rivkala was wordlessly requesting, when my eye fell on the bag hanging from my carriage hook.

“Rivkala, do you want to share your treat with this nice lady, too?” I asked her, impulsively. Rivkala was shy and unsure, but she extracted one wrapped sandwich ice cream from the box, and handed it to the old woman with a tentative smile.

“Oh, what a treat!” the old lady said, her smile

morning, and it seemed to be appreciated. Sometimes I thought I should really do more, like visit the old lady on Shabbos. But somehow that never happened, busy as I was taking care of my kids and adjusting to a new life. Besides, I had no idea if something like that would even be appreciated.

Life was hectic, and I was busy.

Some mornings we ran to make the bus as the driver honked impatiently, stuffing snack bags into Rivkala’s briefcase as she boarded the bus.

“Bye Rivkala!” I would wave breathlessly, and turn away from the bus, relieved that we had made it in time. Inevitably, as I turned around, I would notice the old lady sitting on the porch. On those kinds of mornings, I was usually too rushed to think about her, let alone acknowledge her and wave.

I never got to know our neighbor better, because not long after our move into the house, the old woman moved out, probably due to poor health. Rivkala excitedly awaited new neighbors with kids her age, who were not long in coming. I almost forgot about the old lady we used to wave to every morning. ***

I was excited to get the invitation in the mail. Devorah was making a bar mitzvah! My best friend was officially reaching a new stage, and I was thrilled to come celebrate it with her. Of course, I was also delighted to have an excuse to visit Spring Valley again and see all my old friends. Although I traveled to my parents pretty often, I didn’t meet up with all my old acquaintances on a regular basis.

Devorah’s bar mitzvah was in a gorgeous new hall I’d never yet been to in Spring Valley. There was a full table of my old classmates, many of whom I hadn’t seen in years.

“Chani!” several of them squealed, sounding like the high school girls we once were. “It’s so good to see you!”

“Same!” I said as I embraced my old friends. This was a total treat!

Devorah, the baalas simchah, gravitated to our table, which was full of giggling and excited exclamations. She pulled up a chair to join us as we shared pictures and stories of our current lives over the fruit cup appetizers. I was having a thoroughly good time, especially since the babysitter did not call even once to complain. Mid-meal, I got up to stretch and headed to the sweet table in the

corner where I helped myself to some of the salads that were set out.

“Are you here for Devorah?” the woman with a sleek wig standing near me at the sweet table asked.

I turned around. “Oh, Mrs. Farkas! I didn’t see you!” I said. She was my mother’s old friend, whom I hadn’t seen in years. “It’s so nice to see you again! Yes, I’m here for Devorah. We went to school together back in the day.”

“So this is a bit of a class reunion, then?” Mrs. Farkas asked with a smile, looking over at my exuberant table of friends.

I smiled. “Something like that.”

“Do you still live locally?” Mrs. Farkas asked me.

“Not anymore,” I said. “We moved to Boro Park about five years ago.”

“Oh, wow. Where in Boro Park do you live?”

I told her which block I lived on, and she reacted with surprise.

“That’s where my mother used to live!” she said. “Until she wasn’t well just recently…Her name was Gutwein. Did you know her?”

“Wait a minute,” I said, the cogs in my brain forming the connection, “was your mother the woman in the house next door who used to sit on the second-floor porch with her aide?”

My new acquaintance nodded. “She lived by herself and it added a little life to her day when she saw all the kids playing outside. She used to sit on that porch for hours. One minute,” she added, as if a thought had suddenly struck her, “you said you lived in the house next door?”

“Yes,” I said.

“I don’t believe it! Are you the one who used to wave to my mother every morning with your little girl? Do you have a daughter with blonde braids, brown eyes, and dimples?”

I nodded in affirmation, smiling at her description of my daughter, who was no longer so little and never wore braids anymore. “That’s exactly what she used to look like. I used to tell her to wave to the lady on the porch every morning while we waited for the bus,” I confirmed, remembering those first days after our move.

Tears sprang to my mother’s friend’s eyes as she shook her head in amazement.

“You have no idea what you did for my mother, Chani!” she said emotionally. “I would be talking to her on the phone and she would

A Smile A Day

“Rivkala, pick up your hand and wave!” I told my little five-year-old daughter. She looked up at me uncertainly, her huge brown eyes questioning.

“I know it feels funny,” I told her, glancing up at the second-story porch, “but look at that lady sitting there. She must feel so lonely. You’ll have such a big mitzvah if you wave at her with a big smile!”

Rivkala squinted up in the sun, and caught the old lady’s gaze. She broke out in a wide smile, showing off her dimples and waved energetically.

“Hello, hello!” she sang.

“What a mitzvah girl!” I praised her. The sun made it hard to see, but I was pretty sure the old lady was beaming back at us.

I added a wave of my own before we turned to go home, into our new house next door.

When I moved to Boro Park from Spring Valley, I knew to expect a lot of changes, especially because we moved onto a bustling block in the center of town. Because we were moving to join a close-knit kehillah, I knew that my little daughter would have playmates she knew, but I was pleasantly surprised when she immediately made friends with many of our neighbors as well. It made our settling in even more smooth and easy.

Most of our neighbors were young families just like ours. But there was one older woman right next door who sat out on her porch facing the street, watching the kids play and the buses pass. She seemed a bit lonely to me, sitting there on a chair with only her aide for company.

Whenever I could, I would tell my daughter to wave at the old lady on the second floor. As we waited for the bus, Rivkala happily waved every
