Martin explains to Dov and Hinda how Yosef’s passport had gotten his picture on it. Dov is upset about it and feels he shouldn’t be as trusting of Martin anymore. Martin asks if he can fly to America and Canada with this passport, offering to go to Michoel as if he’s Yosef, and check out the situation there—but Dov says absolutely not.
Michoel is devastated when Hinda tells him there’s a problem with Yosef’s passport and he won’t be able to come to America.
So Chani and Penina were both planning to come for Shabbos. Hinda prayed that all should go smoothly, and discovered that she didn’t have any energy to spare on fretting. She peeled vegetables distractedly, and got a burn on her left hand as she sautéed the onions. “It should be kaparas avonos,” she muttered as she stuck her hand under the running cold water.
She heard Dov come in and quickly glanced over his shoulder. Phew! There was no sign of Martin.
“What happened?” Dov asked her.
“Not a big deal, a little burn. Nu, what did Reb Shlomo say?”
“That we should do it. He says that Martin makes a trustworthy impression. Although he did ask him to sign for us that he won’t use the passport for anything illegal.”
“And he signed?”
“Yes. The Rav drafted the wording of the commitment.”
“And besides that?”
“He gave us a brachah that the mission should succeed.”
“Amen.” Hinda took a deep breath. “Now I have to call the number Michoel left me, the official number.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well, sometimes he calls from the office, and can’t speak too much because there is staff around. But sometimes he calls from a private number; he must have gotten a hold of a different phone, and then he speaks much more freely.”
“Like this last conversation.”
“Yes. I told you, he was literally crying.” She opened the freezer, took out some ice cubes, and wrapped them in a thin dish towel. Then she put it on her stinging hand. “Soon I’ll call to find out how to send Yosef’s medical documents, and how he is supposed to get there. But I have to find a way to tell Michoel that I have something private to tell him, and that he should call me when they are not around him.”
“I hope he’ll understand,” Dov said, as he walked over to stir the sizzling onions.
Hinda went to her room. On a top shelf, in two green files, was all of Yosef’s paperwork from the past six years. She sat down to find the relevant ones, and found herself looking at one of the papers from the National Insurance. There was a photo of Yosef affixed to it with a paper clip, and she studied it. His eyes did not return her gaze, and he didn’t look good at all. It was one of his worst times.
Would she be able to convey to Michoel that the “Yosef” who was coming to him was not the Yosef he knew?
“Mr. Perl?” One of his fellow patients touched his shoulder politely. “Um, um, um, the office asked for you to stop by.” Michoel nodded and turned back in the direction from which he’d come. Since his phone call with Hinda, he’d been feeling drained, ill, and old. Still, he tried to walk with a spring in his step, because if he wanted to put Plan B into effect, he had to give the staff the impression that he was healthy and vibrant. Plan B was to approach the management and clearly ask to leave. The subject had come up two or three times in his conversations with Dr. Jerry, but the latter had patronizingly made it clear that right now there was nothing to discuss.
He had said that of course, he would pay well for his stay and his care, but the doctor had looked offended. “I’m sure you will do that, but do you think that’s the issue? Before anything else, I want you to be healthy!”
They would have to understand that there was what to discuss. He did not want to spend the next thirty or forty years rotting here, and if his good niece in Israel refused to understand that, and kept evading him with foolish excuses, he had no choice but to take action on his own.
“Ah, Michoel.” Dr. Jerry, sitting at the front desk, smiled broadly at him. “Your niece called three minutes ago. Let’s call her back.”
“What does she want?” he asked flatly.
“Maybe it’s about her son; I didn’t ask any questions. I don’t usually pry into conversations about my patients and their families.”
Michoel took the phone, and with an expressionless face, dialed Haifa. “Hello, Hinda,” he said tonelessly when she picked up.
“How are you, Michoel?” she inquired.
“Baruch Hashem, okay.”
“I wanted to talk to you about Yosef. I don’t know who answered the phone before, and I didn’t want to ask; I prefer to do this through you.”
“Okay.” He sat down on a chair that was near the desk. “So, you do want to send Yosef here?”
“Yes. You’ve convinced me, and I think they might really be able to help him. Where should I send his medical files? To the number you gave me last week?”
“Yes.” He sounded a bit more encouraged. “When would you send him?”
“I think very soon.” Martin had to leave the country the following week.
“But I thought you told me he had a problem renewing his passport. You were able to work that out?”
“Yup, baruch Hashem. Don’t ask me how…but we managed to do it.” She forced a chuckle. “His last passport was from when he was eight. He’s changed a lot since then… a whole lot.”
“That’s fine—I’ll recognize him.” Michoel laughed in return. “I saw him less than a year ago.”
“Right, but he became very thin since then.”
“Thin? That’s a good sign. If I remember correctly, his pills made him gain weight.”
“Right,” she said again, and then paused. “Your memory is very good, Uncle Michoel. It always was.”
“Not especially, at this point in time,” he answered glumly, and then recovered. “But I am improving a lot, I’m telling you. Send Yosef, and you’ll see tremendous progress with him too.”
“Hashem will help. Okay, I’m faxing over the papers. Now tell me: where am I booking this ticket to?”
Michoel turned to Dr. Jerry. “She’s asking where she should book the ticket to.”
“First we want to see the papers,” the doctor said. “Based on that, we’ll make the final decision about accepting him. We’ll probably come pick him up from the airport, but we’ll talk about those details when they’re relevant.”
“And I wanted to add something,” Hinda said, after hearing the doctor’s response. “Yosef is nudging me that I shouldn’t forget to tell you this. He’s been falling asleep recently to a little recitation he made up. It calms him, you know. Something that he made up as a little boy—do you remember?”
“No, remind me.”
“Call me privately,” Hinda said in Hebrew, very carefully. “Because the one who will come will be a different boy. He’s very capable, and he’ll take you out of there b’ezras Hashem.” She switched back to English. “Remember the words? How we laughed about them?”
“Yes, I think I do remember,” Michoel said, after a pause. “And I hope to remember now the exact words. And if not—Yosef will remind me, or I’ll make up something similar.”
“I hope he’ll be okay with it.” Hinda smiled, swallowing her sigh of relief. “Just make sure it’s something similar. In Hebrew.”
“Yes, sure, I’ll make up something that will work. But…” He hesitated for a moment. “I hope he still remembers his English? Otherwise, he won’t be able to communicate with the staff here.”
“Sure he remembers English. And it’s even improved a lot recently.” Another forced laugh. “But he has a bit of an accent now, a Canadian one, because during his recent
hospitalizations, he became friendly with a Canadian fellow. I guess the accent rubbed off on him.”
“I see,” Michoel said slowly. “Okay. I hope they’ll approve this, so that he can come. Are you sending the papers? Oh, and they also want a copy of his passport.”
“As soon as I finish speaking to you, I’ll send everything,” Hinda promised, and the conversation came to a close.
“They want to know things, huh?” the psychiatrist asked Michoel.
“Yes.”
“What do they care?”
“People don’t like going somewhere without knowing where to,” Michoel replied. Wasn’t that obvious?
“Do you think if you would know where you are, it would calm you down?”
“I’m sure it would.”
“Okay. So I’m not telling you exactly where we are, but I’m ready to tell you that it’s near the city of Charleston. Maybe you’ll even get to see parts of the city. Sometimes we take outings there.”
“Outings? To Charleston? Like, to go shopping there?” Michoel looked at the other man, wide-eyed.
“Shopping?” The doctor laughed. “We hold marches there. We want to influence other people to learn our way of life. Don’t you think it’s worth it for them to try it out? To have a calmer, more peaceful life, and not to let the everyday pressures destroy nature. Nature is the best doctor in the world for a person.”
“Of course, of course.” Michoel nodded vigorously. Charleston. Charleston. There were at least three states that had a city called Charleston. Which one of the three was he in? ***
Two young women sat on the couch on Friday night, chatting lightly. Hinda looked at them both. They were so different, yet so similar. Each one was marveling at the other one’s baby, and they exchanged their opinions about child-raising as if Chani’s Bracha was sixteen and not a year and a half old, and Penina’s Batsheva was at least twelve.
“I know it’s terrible to spoil them,” Penina said. “But now with this cast, she’s so pitiful. Every time she cries, I’m sure something hurts her.”
“She doesn’t look like she’s in pain at all,” Chani said. She smiled at Batsheva and offered her arms invitingly. Batsheva didn’t move; she was too young to reach out. She just grinned back at Chani. Bracha came running to
her mother and buried her head in Chani’s dressy black skirt.
“Come, let’s see what she’ll do when I hold your cutie!” Chani laughed as she took Batsheva. Oops… Batsheva seemed to have been waiting for this minute, and she spit up right onto Chani’s skirt.
“Oy!” Penina leaped up, blushing furiously. “She got your skirt all dirty! I’m so sorry!”
“Please, it’s no big deal!” Chani stood up as well. “I have two other skirts here. You think I didn’t come prepared? Do you think Bracha doesn’t ever get me dirty?”
“At least she doesn’t spit up.” Penina was still as red as the beet salad she’d placed on the table just a short time before.
“I promise you that when she sits on my lap at the meal and insists on feeding herself, the results are not any better!”
Hinda, who had been perusing a Chumash until now, put her finger in the place where she was up to, and stood up to follow her daughter out of the room. “Chani,” she said quietly, near the door of Chani’s room, “on Rosh Hashanah
I also noticed this: you’re wearing only real clothes, even though we’re in the house. Why don’t you wear a robe instead? You had a gorgeous Shabbos robe, didn’t you? Do you need a new one?”
“No, Ima, it’s fine.” Now it was Chani who looked like the beet salad. “The Shabbos robe you bought me before my wedding is still perfect; it looks like new.”
“Because you don’t wear it.” Hinda smiled. “You don’t have to answer me if you don’t want to—I’m just curious about it.”
“So…it’s because Eli says that real clothes are more dignified and more tznius’dig. He doesn’t have a problem if I wear a robe at home, but if I want to go outside or something like that, then I have to change, because he says that a robe looks too homey and it’s not for the street. So it’s just simpler for me to wear real clothes at home, too. I make sure to have comfortable clothes, of course, and…and that’s it.”
“That’s very nice,” Hinda said admiringly. She studied her daughter. “And if you’re fine with it, then great!”
“Of course I’m fine with it, especially since after he asked me that, I went out to buy another half a wardrobe instead of all my robes. You know how much I love to shop…”
Hinda smiled and went back to the dining room before Penina would mistakenly think they were huddling about her.

Everybody likes to add that extra something to their seudah L’kavod Shabbos Nachamu. Adding homemade dips to the menu is an easy and delicious way to achieve that upgrade. Note: All dips featured will keep in the fridge for at least 10 days, allowing you to enjoy any leftovers for an additional Shabbos.
For those of you who love a good crunch with a bit of heat. Adjust the amount of hot peppers to suit your taste. And for best results use regular mayonnaise, not lite mayonnaise.
1 (15 oz) can Israeli pickles
6 medium (pickled) hot peppers
1 (7 oz) cup mayonnaise
2 frozen garlic cubes
¼ tsp salt
½ tsp sugar
2 tsp dill weed
1. Chop the pickles and hot peppers into small cubes using a vegetable chopper.
2. Place remaining ingredients in a small bowl and mix well. Combine with chopped pickles and hot peppers.
Yields: 1 lb container
Super quick, easy and so versatile! For best results use regular mayonnaise, not lite mayonnaise.
2 medium jalapeno peppers
1 (7 oz) cup mayonnaise
2 frozen garlic cubes
¼ tsp salt
¾ tsp sugar
1. Separate the pits and ribs from the jalapeno peppers and set aside.
2. Place the jalapeno peppers (green parts only) along with the remaining ingredients in a tall container (or in a food processor fitted with the S blade) and blend with an immersion blender until smooth.
3. If you would like more heat in the dip, add in some of the reserved seeds and ribs and re-blend. Keep in mind that the taste will sharpen slightly as it sits.
Note: Wear gloves when dealing with jalapeno peppers and do not touch your eyes.
Yields: ½ lb container
Slightly sweet, slightly spicy…. an addictive combination. Be sure to give the onions all the time they need….
1 Spanish onion, diced
2 Tbsp oil
¼ tsp salt
2 Tbsp brown sugar
¼ tsp paprika
4 Tbsp sweet chili sauce (I used Lieber’s)
1 (7 oz) cup mayonnaise
1. In a small saucepan (not a frying pan, which will cause the onions to turn crisp), heat oil. Add diced onions along with salt. Saute over very low heat for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally. At this point, the onions should be very soft and translucent.
2. Add brown sugar to the pot and raise heat to medium. Saute for an additional 5-10 minutes until onions appear caramelized with a jammy consistency.
3. Remove from heat. Add remaining ingredients and stir to combine. Refrigerate before serving.
Yields: 1 lb container
Creamy and classic!
1 (15 oz) can chickpeas
¼ cup tahini
¼ cup water
1/8 cup lemon juice, preferably fresh
½ tsp salt
2 cloves fresh garlic
¼ cup oil
1. Rinse and drain chickpeas. Reserve 2 Tbsp for garnish.
2. Place along with remaining ingredients, besides oil, in the bowl of a food processor fitted with the S blade. Blend for 4-5 minutes.
3. Add oil and blend an additional 4-5 minutes until very smooth.
4. Transfer to a serving dish. Use the back of a spoon to form a small well in the center. Garnish with olive oil, reserved chickpeas, parsley and paprika. Alternatively, for added flavor, place your favorite confit in the center of the hummus.

of ticks. Ticks are parasites — this means they survive by living on a host. When ticks live on a host, they survive by biting and eating blood. This behavior can spread disease in humans and animals.
Deer ticks can spread Lyme disease as well as a few other illnesses to humans. They are usually the size of sesame seeds or smaller. Dog ticks are about double the size of deer ticks with a red-brown shield. Dog ticks can also spread some diseases, but not Lyme disease.
It’s important for a tick to be removed from the skin immediately and monitor the symptoms following the bite.
Deer ticks will feed off a few different animals or humans during their lifespan, which is how they spread disease. You’re susceptible to illness from a tick bite because their prior animal hosts may have diseases like Lyme.
A tick needs to be attached to the person for a minimum of 24 hours before it can spread Lyme disease however it may carry other bacteria that they can spread in less time. Ticks can stay attached to the body
and fall off.
Most tick bites are painless and cause only minor signs and symptoms, such as a change in skin color, swelling or a sore on the skin.
See your healthcare provider if:
If you notice a Tick on yourself or a member of your family it is time to visit your local healthcare provider. Your provider will use special tools that will remove the tick carefully from the skin to make sure that no part of the tick or its legs remain attached to the body. The longer the tick remains attached to the skin, the greater the risk of getting a disease from it. Your skin may also get irritated.
Call 911 or your local emergency number if you develop:
• A severe headache
• Difficulty breathing
• Paralysis
• Heart palpitations
Q: My son simply hates reading. He is on grade level and has no problem reading, but he just doesn’t see the point. I personally really enjoy reading and so does my husband. He always asks me, “What is it good for?” I try to tell him all sorts of things, but I figured I would also ask you. What’s reading good for?
A: Ah, this is not an easy question to answer – especially depending on your son’s age. The benefits of reading are multiple, but might be hard for a child to understand. Either way, here are some of the ways that reading can improve your life:
• Brain exercise. Reading keeps your brain in an active state. Instead of passively listening to those around you or exercising physical muscles, reading gets your mind working and your productive juices flowing. Research shows that people who exercise their brains through reading, crossword puzzles, or playing a musical instrument have a lesser chance of developing Alzheimer’s disease later in life.
• Expanded knowledge and vocabulary. Reading is one of the best ways to expand your knowledge and word base. This not only helps you do better in all subjects in school, it also helps you speak more intelligently on a dayto-day basis. Aside from career opportunities available to those who appear more intellectual and refined, people enjoy being around those they feel they can learn from.
• Boost creativity. The human brain requires connections in order to function at its maximum capacity. When you read, you create new “velcro” onto which information can get stuck. In other words, the more you know, the more you will later learn. This is perfectly demonstrated when after you learn a new word, that word immediately pops up in multiple situations. With so many connections made from reading, you will be better able to access creative solutions in the future.
• Empathy. Recent studies have shown that children and adults who read fiction are better able

to empathize with people in life. Perhaps exploring the emotional lives of others allows the reader to “step into the shoes” of the real people they interact with daily. Depending on your son’s age, he may not be able to comprehend the importance of these benefits. However, as a reader yourself, I am sure you see these advantages play out in your daily life. Therefore, try to explain the multiple benefits of reading to your son – but most importantly – show him the role of reading in your own life. Let him see you reading in the living room, talk to him about the interesting points in your book, and fill your shelves with books in all subject areas.
While he might not see the value for himself, as a reading role model, you can show him that reading has value for you. This is perhaps the best way to teach him the significance of reading. Then, when he finds the right books, he will be ready to gain all of the benefits that reading offers.

APrep is important when it comes to fasting. Here are some key pointers to keep in mind:
1. Hydration is key- In the hours leading up to the fast, drink plenty of water.
2. Balanced meal- Before starting the fast, opt for a balanced meal that includes lean proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. This will provide your body with sustained energy for the fast.
3. Avoid heavy foods: Having heavy or fried foods can lead to discomfort during your fast.
4. Eat slow-digesting foods such as grains, vegetables and legumes, so that you are kept feeling fuller for longer.
During the fast, be gentle with yourself and listen to what your body is telling you. Don’t be too active and rest when you feel the need for it. Keep yourself occupied with light activities during the day.
Here is how to break your fast, best:
1. Start slowly- when the fast is over, it is not vital to rush into a heavy meal. Your digestive system has been resting, so reintroducing foods gradually is key.
2. I always tell my weight loss clients that it is ok to treat yourself after your fast to a small goodie. Treating yourself to something small will satisfy your immediate cravings without overwhelming your system.
3. Light and balancedAfter having your treat, proceed with a light and balanced meal. Incorporate veggies, lean proteins and healthy fats to nourish your body without feeling overloaded. It is important to avoid a carb overload. While it is tempting to indulge, keep in mind that high-sugar foods can cause energy crashes and make you feel lethargic.
If you are on a weight loss plan, remember, that weight loss is a process. Listen to your body and make adjustments based on how you feel after breaking your fast. Be gentle with yourself and make mindful food choices while striving to achieve your weight loss goals in a healthy and sustainable manner.
QWith Tisha B’Av upon us, what would be the best way to go into the fast and the best way to break the fast?

Recap: The family that fostered Brocha informs the Sternsteins that they are making aliyah, and Mr. Sternstein convinces his wife to have her come home on a trial basis. Rachelli explains that she felt sorry for Ahuva, who was so obviously struggling, and therefore, reached out to her.
I could’ve used a good friend to talk about this with. That was Ahuva’s only coherent thought as she walked out of her house in a daze. Sunday morning had begun just like any other one, with Ahuva lazing around and enjoying a relaxed morning. No one had prepared her for the bombshell. If she would have had it her way, her mother would’ve looked at her with wide, trusting eyes. Her mother would’ve taken her gently by the arm and sat her down on the couch. Her father would’ve joined them, and the news would have been peacefully revealed. Instead, as she sipped a mug of hot cocoa and thought about how she would spend her day, her mother had walked in with a stormy face. Pori was nowhere to be found.
“Next week, Ahuva,” her mother told her, eyeing her warily. “She comes here.”
It was so abrupt, so surreal, it so didn’t make any sense. “Who’s coming?” Ahuva didn’t understand the enormity of what she was being told.
“Brocha.” Her mother’s voice was emotionless, almost like she didn’t care. “Brocha is coming here.”
“Brocha?” A puddle of hot cocoa splattered onto the white table and dripped onto her skirt.
She wasn’t given much of any answers. After two minutes of futile questioning, she excused herself. She had flown out of the door like a fugitive.
Now, standing outside, she felt a bit foolish. Where was she going? Sadly, she had no friend to share the news with. Walking down the block with nowhere to go. All alone. Around her, people came and went. No one seemed to notice a lonely teenager, pacing the street, with thousands of questions
swirling in her mind, and no one to answer them at all.
No one noticed a lonely teenager crossing the street, walking aimlessly. You can be in a room full of people but still be alone. It was a line that she had once read in a book, and it came back to her now. The avenue was teeming with people, but Ahuva had never felt so alone in her entire life. ***
“I just want to talk about it, that’s all.” Rachelli’s eyes flashed. “Why don’t I have the right to know what the whole world knows about our family?”
Mrs. Zone looked at her daughter. Sometimes, she liked to imagine that her daughter was just a regular, growing teenager. It was at moments like these, that she wished she could attribute her daughter’s anger to typical growing teenagerhood.
But she couldn’t. Because in eighth grade, Rachelli had made a new friend. It had taken time for her to realize what was happening. But it was too late.
Apparently, it wasn’t the friend’s fault. Rachelli was a deep thinker, a searcher. She had questions, so many questions. But she was afraid to ask. Once she found a friend that was on her wavelength, they explored the answers together.
Quietly, they expanded their horizons, had late night discussions and late night trips. By the time Mrs. Zone realized just how far her daughter had strayed, they were graduating eighth grade. Rachelli agreed to attend Bnos Batsheva, and like many other parents, the Zones hoped that it was a passing phase.
Now, Rachelli was in eleventh grade. Sure, she had grown. She was in a nurturing, wonderful environment. But she was far from the innocent Bais Yakov girl that they had once known.
She’s frum, she keeps Shabbos and eats only kosher. Just be thankful, Mrs. Zone tried to remind herself. She tried to remind herself that, even now, as her daughter’s temper flared.
“Rachelli.” Mrs. Zone kept her voice even. “What happened ten years ago doesn’t
matter. You know the basic story, why are you bringing this up? It’s a painful topic and I don’t see any reason to discuss it.”
“But I want to know. I want to know one thing. Is it possible, is there a slight chance that Daddy knew who he was running over? Is there a possibility that he wanted to hurt Brocha?” ***
“There’s so much going on.” Chaim Sternstein was reluctant to have this discussion, but it had been long in waiting and there was no more pushing it off. “Ahuva is suffering. Pori isn’t getting any younger. And Brocha,” his voice cracked, “I don’t know, I somehow, still hoped…” He let the end of his sentence trail in the air.
“Where are you getting at? Life isn’t easy, that much we both know,” Laya’s laugh was brittle. “I think it’s time to re-evaluate the direction that we took.” Chaim fumbled with his wristwatch, opening the clasp, and closing it again. “I made many mistakes. Maybe I need to correct them. Maybe this is G-d’s way of saying that we need to change tracks.”
“What? Are you serious?” Laya couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “You are really linking my messed-up life to some business folly? That makes no sense!”
“Nothing makes sense, Laya.” Chaim suddenly sounded tired, defeated. It was the sound of a warrior giving up. “Does Pori still being single make sense? Does Ahuva’s hair pulling and miserable school life make sense? Does Brocha’s prolonged illness make sense?”
“What are you getting at?”
“It’s time to own up to what we did.”
“What did we do?” Laya refused to meet her husband’s eyes. He was being kind, really. He was trying to blame himself, to pretend that this was all his fault.
But they both knew the truth. Chaim would never hurt a fly. But Laya, she would hurt more than just flies. Over the course of the past few years, she had done a lot more than just hurt a fly.
Perhaps it was coming back to bite her.
Admitting that she had done a heinous act wasn’t something that she was about to do.
Pretending to be in denial was easier. “Laya, we destroyed someone’s reputation. Granted, we didn’t mean for it to go so far, but it did, and we didn’t stop it then. What we did was unforgivable.”
“It’s fine.” Laya finally looked up to meet her husband’s eyes. “You can stop saying we. It was me, and only me at fault here. It was my idea, and you opposed it. You couldn’t believe what I had done when I told you.”
“I think,” Chaim got up and stretched. “I think it’s time to meet with them, explain all of this to them. Beg them to forgive us.”
Laya got up, too, her hands shaking. “Chaim,” she said, and even her voice was shaking now. “Never. It’s not happening, not now, or ever. So don’t even dare try to bring this up again. Ever.”
Seeing the determined look on his face, she quickly added, “And don’t dare do anything behind my back. Because buying my forgiveness may just be a lot harder than gaining theirs.”
With that, the conversation was inelegantly over.
***
His hands may have been tied, but Chaim still wanted to correct a different misdeed. He was planning to mention it in the same conversation, but it had ended badly, and he had never even had a chance to discuss it.
Now, he was glad that he hadn’t mentioned it. After seeing Laya’s reaction to the first idea, he was glad that he could do this without explicitly going against her wishes.
Still, he was trembling inside. After so many years, he had gathered his wits and every last ounce of courage that he had to meet with Shmuel.
He was surprised that Shmuel had agreed to the meeting. There was so much water under the bridge. After the accident, the Sternsteins had dragged the Zones through the mud. True, Chaim himself hadn’t gone around saying that the accident had happened on purpose, but he sure hadn’t stopped the terrible rumors that were circulating.
They had agreed to meet in a neutral place. In a coffee shop. Five, six, seven…ten. It was
exactly ten years since the accident and eight years since the day of the grand opening that Chaim had ruined.
Now, standing at the corner of the small coffee shop, Chaim wasn’t sure he was ready to see the man who had unintentionally destroyed his daughter’s life.
But when Shmuel walked in, in a haze of emotion, Chaim felt himself enveloped in a warm embrace. They hadn’t seen each other in ten years, but pain had brought them together.
After that, they both sat down and just looked at each other.
“I just came to explain,” Chaim began. “I want you to understand a little more of why I did what I did. I want to apologize, but first, to explain.”
Shmuel waved his hand. “Really, it’s been so many years. Why don’t we just call it a truce? Hashing and rehashing the details won’t make a difference at this point any way. If you called me to move on, I am more than ready.”
“I know. But I want to explain.” Shmuel agreed to listen, at Chaim’s insistence.
“I was excited about the new supermarket. I was busy with investments then, and I had made a lot of money on a recent investment. I was excited to invest that money in this new joint venture and enjoyed the planning process immensely.”
Both men instantly remembered the many enjoyable hours that they had spent together, working with a marketing agency, designing the logo, and discussing the layout of the store.
Shmuel nodded and Chaim continued. “A few weeks before the grand opening, I heard of a new opportunity. It was the wisest time to invest my money, as the grand opening was approaching, and I had the money set aside for this venture.” Chaim’s eyes clouded over at the memory.
“The investment seemed safe, and it was a rare opportunity. But he needed a lot of money. More than I had ready. So I figured, how bad could it be? I would dig into the money that I had set aside, no big deal. By the time the grand opening came, I would be making back
double.” Chaim paused.
“I had been making investments for years, so this was just like any other.”
Shmuel heard the unmistakable pain and regret in his voice. “Chaim, like I said, I forgive you. There is no need for you to relive the past. Now, you just have to forgive me for making an unforgivable mistake.”
Chaim stopped his story and whispered, “But Shmuel, you are wrong. On that day, the day that you hit my daughter, I had been taking a walk with her. I was supposed to be watching her. You were driving on a quiet road, and it was a rainy night. I had been waiting for an answer from a business associate, and I lost track of where I was or who I was walking with. His eyes took on a faraway look.
“Abba! Look! I can run fast! Really fast!” Chaim smiled at Brocha. “I will show you!”
“Ping!” Chaim looked down at his phone. Out of the corner of his eye, he watched Brocha race ahead. I should run after her, he thought. Instead, he read the email. It was an important update. It would make a big difference. His heart began to race in anticipation. He had waited for this email for a long time now.
“You can’t catch me!” Brocha’s laughter rang out in the air, but was instantly swallowed by the screeching of brakes.
And Chaim finally looked. A minute too late.
“I could’ve told you. I could’ve explained it to the street, to the rumors. I could’ve told them that it wasn’t you. That I was an absentminded father, that I found an email more important than watching my own child.”
Chaim’s eyes were wet. “But I just couldn’t. I couldn’t bear the shame of admitting the truth. Not the to public, and not to my distraught wife, who would never trust me again. So I didn’t. Instead of facing reality and admitting my terrible, fatal, mistake, I allowed the rumors to swirl and whirl. I allowed the world to believe that it was you.”
Shmuel, who had just said that he wholeheartedly forgave Chaim for his business folly, for his disappearance many years ago, sat there, numb with shock. Suddenly, he wasn’t so sure after all.

Last week’s Health Awareness Event was a resounding success. Close to 1,000 people attended in person – with many more following the speeches and medical panel virtually – hearing about the importance of caring for one’s health and regular visits to a primary care physician. The focus of the event was for all of us to take a step back and take responsibility – to ourselves, our families, and to the Ribono shel Olam, the Healer of all.
Reb Yitzchok Stralberg, MC, recounted how we use the word ‘unfortunately’ when talking about health. “Speak to any Hatzalah member, any doctor, or anyone at the organizations dedicated to helping cholei Yisrael. They’ll all tell you that the number of young-to-middle age people in our community faced with severe illness is unprecedented. The worst part is that so many of these unfortunate diagnoses are not acute – they didn’t suddenly show up. High blood pressure, elevated cholesterol levels, chronic heart disease, and strokes, are all conditions that are worsened by ignorance and neglect.”
That’s Makdim’s mission statement: To bring awareness around health and shake up the status quo of our complacent lives. Don’t neglect your health! Spend half an hour at the doctor's office once or twice a year and know which conditions are hereditary. What is your A1C? What are your cholesterol levels? Don’t think that because you’re ‘only’ 35 or 40, you’re too young to be invested in your health.
The atmosphere turned somber when Reb Stralberg told of a personal anecdote: In February 2020 he woke up and suddenly felt excruciating dizziness and numbness on the entire left side of his body. His speech was slurred and his facial muscles
became paralyzed. He remembered an EMT course he had taken years earlier and realized he was in the throes of a stroke.
population.
Before he collapsed he barely managed to tell his wife to call Hatzalah and tell them he was experiencing a stroke. Months of rehab followed, where he had to relearn how to use every single one of his limbs. The point that Reb Stralberg wanted to make, occurred the next day. His neurologist entered the room and asked what medication he was on to treat his diabetes. Utterly taken aback he stuttered, “I’m not a diabetic.” His blood sugar levels were three times the amount of those of a healthy individual. The doctor shot back, “Are you surprised by what happened? You’re literally a walking timebomb and should be thankful you’re alive.”
Dr. Shimshi Zimmerman, Medical Director of Hatzalah New York, started the medical panel by asking the doctors about the importance of a primary care physician.
Dr. Eli Inzlicht, Medical Director at Premium Heath, explained that the role of a PCP is to get to know each patient personally and do basic testing. People of all ages need to build a relationship with a PCP since many health conditions can manifest at a young age. Furthermore, a PCP will refer their patients to specialists when there are issues that require more specialized care. When asked about hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart disease, Dr. David Sherman of Columbia Presbyterian explained that if a male family member under the age of 55 had a heart attack, you’re at greater risk of developing heart issues yourself. It’s important to be aware of your family history and get testing that may not be so routine for the general
Hypertension is known as the ‘silent killer’ since living with high blood pressure can go undetected for many years but will lead to complications. It’s therefore incumbent on everyone over the age of 35 to check their blood pressure regularly – at home and at the doctor’s office – and get familiar with their numbers and follow up with their PCP if they are elevated.
When asked about preventative screenings, Dr. Aaron Tokayer, Professor of Gastroenterology, started by highlighting the success of Makdim’s efforts in raising awareness for preventative testing. Over 1,000 people got screened in the past six months and 60% of those who got colonoscopy screenings had polyps found that, if left untreated, could have become cancerous.
Most people are aware that diabetes equals high blood sugar, but many don’t realize how much deeper it can go. Elevated sugar alerts us that someone might be pre-diabetic, but diabetes can cause vascular (blood vessel) problems that can affect our bodies in many ways – including heart issues, kidney failure, diabetic ulcers, and vision problems. But all that, and more, can be prevented with regular screenings and lifestyle modifications.
Reb Stralberg passionately implored the audience to take it upon themselves to visit the doctor at least once a year. He told those who excuse themselves with their busy lifestyle, to view it as one of the mitzvos we perform once a year: biur chametz, tashlich, and mishloach manos. No one forgets to do those mitzvos –they’re an absolute privilege!
Let’s all hold the mitzvah of venishmartem meod lenafshoseichem just as dear and make it a priority.
Makdim is now working with PCP offices that will provide appointments during regular office hours and after hours, making it easier for everyone to schedule that important check-up – regardless of their schedule. Reach out to Makdim at 718-925-2943 for more information. Visit makdim.org to watch a replay of the event.

Many stories told about the challenge of technology often end with an open miracle, incredible salvation, or a shocking turnaround that sets everything right. Nobody tells the stories about Mesirus Nefesh that don’t necessarily culminate in a breathtaking display of Siyata Dishmaya. Nobody shares the stories when they stayed true to the Torah principles, against all odds. Nobody describes how they grappled with naysayers and fought inner wars before emerging triumphant, with their values intact.
I want to share such a story. Spoiler Alert: It does end with a miracle for which we are constantly thanking Hashem – but that is not the point of my story. I want to tell you about my determination not to drop my standards by an iota, even though everyone insisted that it was inevitable. I want to share with you the struggle and the challenge. Maybe you, too, will gather the courage to do what’s right as a result of reading about our incredible journey.
We had been married for just a year when our beautiful baby girl was born. She was born with a serious heart defect that required a complex 16-hour heart surgery by a top-notch surgeon. Extensive research, aided by dedicated medical askanim, made it very obvious that our only option was a hospital in San Francisco. We needed to get there as soon as possible.
San Francisco! In Yiddish parlance, the area was a desert. There was a Chabad shaliach nearby, but there weren’t any kosher groceries or amenities. I was headed to Silicon Valley; the breadbasket of today’s digital age. All the who’s who of social media sourced their products and labor right there.
I was at a loss. How would I get around in this uber-digital neighborhood with just my text-free flip-phone for help? It seemed impossible.
Others who had been there before me, in similar circumstances, assured me that it truly was impossible! They offered good advice. They warned me that I must take along a Smartphone – not for convenience, but for necessity. I even heard from a respected Talmud Chochom who had been there with a child. He said that he’d tried to get by without a Smartphone but he realized that it was impossible.
Transportation was the biggest issue. San Francisco didn’t have taxis roaming the streets. There weren’t any local car-service companies that you could call when you needed to get from Point A to Point B. The only option was to drive your own car. Considering that I had never gotten my license, that was obviously unrealistic.
What did non-drivers do in San Francisco? They used Lyft and Uber. Easy as pie…if you had a Smartphone, of course.
Another big hurdle was directions – or the lack thereof. Without Google Maps, how would I get around in an unfamiliar neighborhood? The contact with doctors was another sticking point. Doctors don’t call you on the telephone, nor do they invite you for a friendly chat. They use email, or – begrudgingly – text messaging.
Everything – literally everything – works via Internet. I was good and truly stuck.
But I didn’t give up – or give in.
To be continued…
What is the connection between Yad L’Achim, an organization that helps rescue Jewish women and children from captivity, and Tu B’Av, the most popular day for shidduchim in Klal Yisrael?
Many years ago, when Yad L’Achim began receiving calls about Jewish women trapped in Arab villages, it established a division dedicated to their liberation, as well as to the prevention of such situations. These women are often rescued with nothing more than the clothes they are wearing at the time, and Yad L’Achim helps provide them with basic necessities to begin rebuilding their lives. With Hashem’s help, many of these women have gone on to marry bnei Torah and establish Jewish homes.
But, recognizing that this isn’t always a quick or easy transition, Yad L’Achim arranged for talmidei chachamim to daven in mekomos hakedoshim such as Amuka and Meron so that these women should merit finding their shidduch. Soon, Yad L’Achim began accepting names for tefillah from Jews across the world, who wanted the talmidei chachamim to daven for them, too. And for many years, Yad L’Achim arranged for a minyan of talmidei chachamim to daven in Amuka (the resting place of the Tanna Yonasan Ben Uziel), an auspicious place to daven for a shidduch, on Tu B’Av, an auspicious day to daven for a shidduch. There never was and never will be any donation required to submit names for tefillah through Yad L’Achim.
Six years ago, with the brachah and encouragement of Rav Chaim Kanievsky
zt”l, Yad L’Achim launched Tu B’Av Together, when not only do the talmidei chachamim daven in Amuka, but Jews all across the world unite to daven for all the singles in Klal Yisrael, reciting specific kapitlach of Tehillim on Tu B’Av - Together!
There are several ways to participate in this special day.
Two inspiring, uplifting events will be livestreamed on TuBavTogether.com, both hosted by Nesanel Gantz.
The first live event will take place on

The following eight kapitlach will be recited: ,ב"פ ,'ע ,ח"ל ,ב"ל ח"כק ,ז"כק ,ד"כק ,א"כק - (32, 38, 70, 82, 121, 124, 127, 128)
At TuBavTogether.com, names can be submitted for tefillah for free to the minyan of talmidei chachamim in Amuka. Over the past year, Yad L’Achim has received hundreds of messages from people who got engaged since submitting their names to last year’s Tu B’Av Together tefillah. Last year, over 500,000 Jews in places as far-flung as Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Alaska, Hong Kong, Cyprus, Greece, and Argentina participated in the tefillah and live events.
To submit names for tefillah for free, download the chapters of Tehillim in advance, and watch the live events VISIT WWW.TUBAVTOGETHER.COM OR CALL YAD L’ACHIM (24/6) AT 1-866-923-5224.

A person once came into the Sanzer Ruv, and asked him. “What is the difference between Avroham Aveinu and you?”
The Sanzer Ruv answered him with a Mushel.
A king had 2 people who worked for him. A wood chopper and an advisor. The wood chopper worked for 12 hours of the day for the king. The advisor only spent 2 hours of the day with the king. Who is more important to the king? Who does the king get more out of? Of course, the advisor.
“The same is the difference between Avroham Aveinu and me. I could try to do things all day, but Avroham Aveinu was the advisor….”
An Idaho man with more than 250 Guinness World Records to his name attempted to break another record by balancing an umbrella on his finger for 3 hours, 46 minutes and 16 seconds. He said some of the largest obstacles to breaking the record for longest duration balancing an umbrella on one finger were overcoming fatigue and the monotony of standing and sitting still during his attempt.

sound.
Blindfold players and have them guess the item from the sound it makes. You can show the items to younger children at the beginning of the game.
For older children, make them guess without seeing the items.
Some examples are:
A stapler – staple a paper
A glass – hit the side with a spoon
A tzedakah box – shake it
A piece of paper – tear it
A comb – rub your ngers along the teeth
Wood blocks – bang them together
A pot with a lid – place the lid on top noisily.
For example 2 spoons, 2 balls, 2 pens etc. Place under a plastic soup bowl. You need at least 10 items to play the game. One player picks up 2 bowls per turn. Everyone tries to remember it until a set is found. You can play it with little prizes and each player keep the set they found.
The point of this game is to be the rst to complete your “Menchie”.
Each player gets a piece of paper and a pencil. Roll a die to complete your drawing.
Every time, the number of dots on the die represents a di erent body part:
1 = body
2 = head and neck
3 = hat, kappel or bow
4 = one eye, or mouth
5 = 1 arm
6 = one leg
If a player rolls a number of a body part they already have, their turn is over.
When a player successfully rolls a needed number, they get a free roll to attempt to get another body part.
The winner of the game is the rst to nish their Menchie.

Bentzi, her husband, wouldn’t let her. While Mindy was embarrassed to be the one who could afford what everyone else could only dream of, Bentzi was thrilled with their new opportunities. He insisted on buying her lavish gifts and bought himself a gleaming Tesla to drive.
It was Bentzi who’d insisted on furnishing their summer home to the highest standard, enjoying every last opulent touch. Including the vase that Shia had broken today, which Mindy had pushed out of her mind.
Mindy couldn’t object to Bentzi’s grand style, but it didn’t mean she had to show it off to her sisters.
“You think that they’ll really enjoy coming here?”
“What’s there not to enjoy about our gorgeous grounds, a fabulous pool, and fresh air?” Bentzi asked rhetorically. “If you’re scared it will be too hard for you to cook, just call me tomorrow and tell me what to buy. I’ll head to Gourmet before I leave the city and buy out the takeout.”
Mindy didn’t miss the touch of glee in Bentzi’s tone. He found it fun to splurge on delicacies. When Mindy didn’t answer right away, Bentzi grew concerned. “Is there a reason that you don’t want to invite her?” he asked, trying to sound solicitous. “Did you have a fight or something?”
“No, not at all!” Mindy protested. “Okay, let me call her and see if she wants to come.”
“I don’t know why you’re so unsure if she’ll want,” Bentzi said as they hung up. Maybe they’ll feel out of place, Mindy thought. In surroundings where even Mindy sometimes felt inadequate, with a social life that revolved so much around things, wouldn’t Fraidy feel insecure?
With Mindy’s new circumstances, it was a social circle that Mindy was growing comfortable in, although she wasn’t quite fully confident in her own skin yet.
Mindy thought of her self-assured older sister and she stifled a chuckle. Who was she kidding? Fraidy would have all of Mindy’s new friends wrapped around her thumb in an instant. Fraidy had never needed things to bolster her status. She gained popularity in an instant.
There was no reason to be concerned about Fraidy fitting in. It was Mindy who was afraid
of not fitting in.
Of not quite fitting in with the haves just yet, but of leaving her family so far behind that she didn’t fit in with them either.
“Did you call Fraidy yet?” Bentzi called later, after he finished work, to ask her.
“No,” Mindy admitted. “Not yet.”
“It’s pretty late in the week to invite someone for Shabbos,” Bentzi said in a tone of reproach.
“I know,” Mindy said.
Bentzi was quiet, trying to figure out what was going on with his wife.
“Don’t you think that if we have the ability to share a little of what we were given, it’s only the right thing to do it?” Bentzi asked rhetorically.
Mindy pondered his words.
That we were given, he’d said.
It wasn’t about her, because none of this was hers. She’d been granted it for now, either for a while or for a short time. But as long as she was in possession of this grant, it was up to her to use it right.
There was no need for embarrassment, because it wasn’t hers to begin with. It was only hers to share.
“I’ll call Fraidy,” Mindy said to her husband. Bentzi was thrilled to hear it.
“Hi Fraidy,” Mindy said as soon as her sister picked up. “I was wondering if you want to join us for Shabbos this week. One of my friends is leaving early, and her bungalow is being empty for Shabbos.”
“That sounds like a dream,” Fraidy said in delight. “We’d love to come and spend Shabbos with you in the country!”
Her sister’s obvious pleasure warmed Mindy. “We’ll make sure it is a dream for you,” she said. “Mommy told me you’ve been working too hard. So when you come here, you’re being under strict orders to rest up and enjoy every second to the fullest. Got it?”
And Mindy, your orders are the same, she admonished herself again. To enjoy every bit of what she had without worrying how it reflected on herself.
Got it, Mindy? She asked herself.
When she found a smile on her lips as she thought of the upcoming Shabbos with her sister, she was pretty sure she had. •
all week.
“How are Fraidy and Chavi doing?” she asked. All her siblings had stayed in the city, as Mindy herself had all the years that she was growing up. If the whole truth could be told, Mindy missed her sisters like crazy. And since the whole truth could never, ever be admitted aloud, Mindy would only acknowledge to herself that she was a bit jealous of them. Bentzi would be scandalized if she expressed any such sentiment about her sisters who were so much less well off. So Mindy wouldn’t say it.
But she couldn’t say it to her worried mother either. Nor did she feel comfortable admitting it to her sisters, who, although not poor by any means, all worked very hard to cover their budgets. Mindy had been cast into the lucky position of the rich sister, but for some reason, it didn’t feel lucky to her at all.
“Fraidy works very hard all week,” her mother said, the concern back in her voice full-force. “She and Duvid are both out of the house a whole day, and the kids are in day camp. By the time she comes home, she’s exhausted. I told her she must take a vacation.”
“Why doesn’t she do that?”
“She says she used up all her vacation days on her midwinter vacation, and she in any case doesn’t have the energy to plan a vacation now,” her mother said.
Mindy hesitated. Toby had confirmed that her bungalow was going to be empty for Shabbos, and that Mindy was welcome to use it to invite family.
Not that Mindy had been planning to invite anyone. She’d just checked, because Bentzi would have wanted her to.
She couldn’t invite her sister to see the luxury she was living in this summer. Could she?
“And how’s Chavi doing?” Mindy asked instead.
“She loves it here, Baruch Hashem,” her mother said. “Now that she cut her hours by her job, she has the whole afternoon off until the kids come home from day camp. She’s also looking forward to going up to her mother-in-law’s bungalow for two weeks in the second half. I’m happy for her.”
Mindy was, too.
Her mother began talking about her sister’s kids and the witticisms she’d recently overheard. Mindy sipped her iced coffee
thoughtfully.
Her sister probably wouldn’t even want to come up to Mindy for Shabbos, she rationalized. Fraidy had told her she was happy staying in the city, without the bugs and the dirt. And knowing her sister’s finicky nature, Fraidy probably hadn’t been exaggerating.
But what if she could offer her sister a stateof-the-art summer home to stay in for a Shabbos, in the clean, well-kept grounds of Summerview Cottages?
Would Fraidy say no?
There was no way to know unless Mindy made the offer. ***
When Bentzi called during his lunch break, she told him about the latest developments. “I don’t even get your question,” Bentzi said, and his puzzled tone showed he meant it. “Of course you should invite your sister for Shabbos! Why are you even thinking twice about it? I think Duvid will be happy to come join the chevrah for shalosh seudos, and I know how much you love to hang out with your sisters all the time. Weren’t you just saying the other day how the kids miss their cousins?”
It was all true, and Mindy was tempted. But when she pictured leading her sister into her fully-outfitted summer home, with every amenity that Bentzi had insisted they install, she felt her stomach curl up into a twist. She’d be so embarrassed. Fraidy would go home and rave to all her sisters and sisters-inlaw about Mindy’s stunning summer cottage. Once again, Mindy would become the odd one out, the one no one was quite sure how to talk to because her husband Bentzi had “made it” in business.
Mindy worked hard all year to keep the differences in their status carefully camouflaged. Their home in the city had been built before Bentzi’s business took such a quantum leap to success, so there wasn’t that much of a difference between her home and that of her siblings’. Their kids went to the same schools and wore the same uniforms, and though Mindy dressed her kids very well, there was no glaring difference between the cousins.
She would have stayed even more low-key, except she couldn’t.
way not to have to sit out in the circle with all the other ladies every morning. There was a limit to how much she could handle their socializing.
“Good,” Chani said imperiously. “I’m waiting on my front porch.”
Mindy checked Sarala’s diaper and strapped her into the Joolz stroller. Sarala kvetched as she secured the straps.
“Come Sarala, want to go on a walk with Mommy and see some birdies?”
Mention of the birdies worked wonders as Sarala bounced up and down in glee, her chubby cheeks wobbling in delight.
“Oh my, I love that outfit on her!” Chani said as soon as she caught sight of Mindy. Apparently, she’d gotten impatient enough to come out of her comfy bungalow and wait outside. “Where did you get it?”
“The Red Balloon,” Mindy said. And she had spent the equivalent of her mother’s weekly salary on it. But it was okay, because the romper was absolutely adorable. Even Mommy had admired it, even though Mindy would never tell her how much it cost.
“Totally love,” Chani said, as they turned up the road heading out of the bungalow colony. Mindy let herself feel a sense of satisfaction. Chani’s compliments didn’t usually flow so easily.
“So, what do you think I should do about our summer pictures?” Chani asked. They always started at a slower pace that allowed for talking, but by the time they reached the top of the first hill, they’d both be panting too hard to make conversation. “I don’t know who to use, and my kids have like, nothing to wear. I don’t know why I always forget that we need photography clothes for the summer when I’m shopping. You could think I don’t take these pictures every year.” Mindy hmmed, and Chani was content to go on.
“But my main issue this summer is that my Gitty is so hard,” Chani shook her head. “It’s a good thing I found this mother’s helper arrangement. I would not manage having her home with me every day. Gitty is also the reason I haven’t had any guests yet this summer. I couldn’t think about it.”
Chani’s last few words came out stilted, as the two of them started to inch up the incline. Mindy didn’t bother answering as she
concentrated on climbing the mountain. Most of their walk passed in silence, with the occasional comment from Mindy to Sarala. It was only on the way down that Chani began another conversation.
“I heard that the Bergers are going home early, before first half finishes. They’re not being here next Shabbos,” Chani said. “You heard anything from Toby?”
“No,” Mindy said, though she wondered why Toby hadn’t told her anything. It was a pity Toby was going home early. Mindy had enjoyed her company.
“One minute. She’s leaving her bungalow empty?”
“Well, I think her brother’s coming up for second half, but it’s probably being empty over Shabbos. Why?”
“Just curious,” Mindy said. There went her excuse of not having enough space. Instead of cramming her own kids and her sister’s family into her four bedrooms, she could let her sister stay comfortably at Toby’s bungalow. ***
“Hi, sheifela, how are you?” Her mother’s voice was always concerned, even when everything was wonderful. Mindy wondered if she’d get to be like that too one day.
Ensconced on her couch and surrounded by central air, with Sarala in the baby bouncer close by, Mindy was able to answer the question easily.
“Terrific! It’s gorgeous up here in the mountains. Me and Bentzi are enjoying the house so much now that it’s completely finished. Last year it was nice, but because it was our first time here, we were still getting used to it. This year, we can really enjoy it.”
Mindy looked around her summer home again as she spoke. If Mommy would only see what Mindy meant by finished…her mother probably didn’t even dream that such finishings could be in evidence in her own daughter’s second house.
“Wonderful,” her mother said, and the note of concern decreased a bit. “I’m so happy to hear you’re enjoying yourself. You both deserve it. Bentzi works so hard, I’m sure it’s a great vacation for him to come up to the country like that every Shabbos and find you and the kids having such a nice summer.”
Mindy swallowed. Bentzi did work very hard
And I’m supposed to be having the time of my life, Mindy thought ironically, looking at the shards of broken glass.
She stifled an unfunny chuckle and went to grab a broom.
So Shia had been a little overexuberant about his trip and broken the vase that costed enough to pay for the entire camp’s trip. It wasn’t a big deal, right? Not if you had the money anyway.
She swept the shiny fragments into the dustpan, noticing the way they reflected the sunlight, twinkling in an array of colors. Almost like diamonds.
But diamonds were unbreakable, while expensive crystal vases were not.
Really, what did it matter? No one she knew was going to see this summer home and the furnishings that they’d spent a filthy fortune on,
not if she could help it. Even though her sisters surely wondered why she never invited them up for a Shabbos. It was true that Mindy’s bungalow only had four bedrooms, making it hard to host large families, but that wouldn’t normally stop her.
She was running out of good excuses to give her family. Although none of them openly questioned her, Mindy could tell they were wondering. Her phone rang with the predictably familiar ringtone. It was Chani, once again.
“Where are you, Mindy?” Chani asked stridently. “I saw Shia running to day camp earlier, and I’m still sitting here and waiting for you.”
“I’m coming,” Mindy said automatically. Chani was her walking partner, who wouldn’t miss a day of jogging in her sneakers. Mindy wasn’t the most avid walking person, but it was a good
