Recap: Chava explains why she didn’t want Tehilla to know that they were related to the Zones. Rachelli asks Ahuva to walk home from school together.

CHAPTER NINETEEN:

“Mom! Guess what?” Ahuva’s face was glowing. Laya Sternstein’s heart skipped a beat. Was this the news that she was secretly hoping for? “Tehilla was chosen as G.O. President!” Giggling happily, Ahuva added, “and I know she really wanted it! I am so excited!”

Laya’s eyes widened. Was her daughter for real? Her heart twisted as she tried to suppress the uncomfortable feeling that was slowly forming within her. Tehilla? Why was Tehilla always the star? What did she do that was so amazing and so much better than her Ahuva?

A tiny voice in the corner of her mind whispered, Brocha. Brocha would’ve been chosen. It wasn’t logical, really. But then again, since when were feelings based on logic? Feelings just came and rose within her, and she never stopped to question the futility of it all. Brocha was gone, or at least the Brocha of the past. And the Brocha of the past never had the opportunity to reach eighth grade.

A lump rose in her throat as she shook herself back to the present. “Wow,” she finally managed. And before she could help herself, “It’s nice that you are so happy for your friend.” Was she imagining it, or did Ahuva’s eyes just narrow?

“Mom, of course I am! She’s my best friend!” Laya could tell that the word best friend left a sweet taste on her daughter’s tongue.

“That’s nice,” she said, trying to sound absentminded. She wasn’t. Her mind was right there, and she felt a fury that she had buried long ago slowly gaining momentum. Tehilla. It was always Tehilla. How much longer would her daughter have to wait for her place in the spotlight? It sounded immature, even to herself, but her daughter’s reality irked her constantly.

Back in fifth grade, she had been thrilled that her daughter had acclimated to her new school so fast and made a new best

friend almost instantly. She had been warned about hard adjustments and trouble making friends, but Ahuva didn’t have any of that. It had seemed like a good thing then. But the world didn’t start and end with Tehilla Kaplan. And yet, for Ahuva, Tehilla was her entire world. Sometimes, Laya convinced herself that it was normal for kids to have such good friends. Other times, it bothered her that not only wasn’t her daughter branching out, she was also living in Tehilla’s shadow, never getting her own chance in the limelight. Watching her daughter’s face alight with joy at her friend’s good fortune, she almost had to shake herself and say- You should be happy that your daughter has such great middos and doesn’t get annoyed at other’s good news. Instead, she was shaking with self-righteous indignation.

At that moment, something inside Laya Sternstein snapped. It was time for Ahuva to have a future, too.

Now, three years later, standing at the never ending line in the hosiery store, Laya shook herself back to the present. She wondered why these memories were haunting her now. Was it because Tehilla was back in Ahuva’s life once again? Or was it because perhaps she was feeling just one iota of guilt? I never lied, she assured herself as the line inched forward. I never did anything to cause real harm. Right?But people who didn’t cause others harm didn’t have to doubt themselves. People who were honest and straightforward never had to look back and wonder.

So why, as she finally made her way up to the register and watched the teen behind the counter ring up her products, was she filled with deep self-shame? Why was she still wondering?

With the hosiery safely in her bag, she breathed a sigh of relief and allowed the cool breeze to embrace the turmoil in her mind as she briskly walked towards her parked car. Let the bygones be bygones, she thought. Her eyes fell upon a colorful ad hanging on a tree. “Journaling- Discovering Peace of Mind through Writing.” She smiled at the thought but walked past it.

Many people tried to sell courses, and this was just one of them. Something niggled at

the corner of her mind. Tehilla always wrote gorgeous poems. Ahuva never really knew how to write. There was nothing wrong with not being the strongest writer. But when your best friend won every writing competition and had teachers making photocopies of her work as a sample for future students, it only made sense to want to be a good writer, too, right?

But Ahuva never complained. She was always genuinely happy for her friend and her incredible talents. That was the most frustrating part of it all. If her daughter couldn’t see that her friend was silently overshadowing her, it was up to her mother to show her the light.

Pulling up into her driveway, Laya felt a heavy weariness take over her body. Those memories. They were draining her. It was time to move on. Rehashing the past wouldn’t change anything. It only caused unnecessary stress.

With Tehilla neatly filed away in the deep recesses of her mind, she burst the door open. “Ahuva!” she called. Glancing at the clock in the kitchen, she wondered where Ahuva was. She should have been home from school a half hour ago. Sometime ago, okay, a really long time ago, when Ahuva wasn’t home, she knew that she was deep in conversation somewhere, giggling and enjoying the joy that friendship brings.

It used to be that Ahuva didn’t even have to tell her where she was. It was natural to find her at Tehilla’s house, just as it was natural to find Tehilla here.

But now, Ahuva just came home at the same time every day, a sullen, closed look on her face. Laya sighed and walked up the stairs heavily, feeling the weight of her problems in each step. Carefully removing her blond wig and slipping on her snood, she wondered again where Ahuva was.

Was she supposed to worry? Her fingers automatically dialed Pori’s number. “Hi, what’s up?” Pori sounded distracted and there was noise in the background.

“Pori, did you see Ahuva?”

“Ahuva? I saw her in the hallway today, but I left school at noon. What’s going on?”

The noise died down and she heard a door

click shut. “I don’t know where she is. It’s already forty minutes past the normal time that she comes home.” Anxiety rose in her throat.

Pori breathed. “Mom, that’s crazy! The saddest part is that I can’t even imagine one friend that would’ve kept her up in school. Should I call the school? They don’t really keep track of how the girls get home, though.”

“Pori, I..I..I can’t listen to this.”

“I know, Ima, I know.” Pori’s voice was loaded with meaning, and the same image arose in both of their minds.

Brocha! Brocha! Where was she? She had left an hour ago, happily chattering about her walk with Daddy. They had held hands and Brocha had waved goodbye and offered her cheeky smile. It made sense that Dad got distracted on the phone as they walked and lost track of time right?

A sense of foreboding filled the air and the Sternstein home suddenly felt stifling hot. Then, her phone rang.

Two minutes later, her door burst open, and her neighbor and friend flew into the room crying hysterically. Laya’s heart pounded wildly as she tried to answer the phone and talk to her neighbor at the same time.

“Brocha, where is Dad and Brocha,” she murmured as she tried to listen to the voices that were coming out of her phone. Someone screamed. The scream cut through the air and echoed madly around the house. Laya looked up to see who was screaming. Someone placed a gentle hand on her shoulder and she suddenly realized that the scream was coming from her.

“We don’t have to go there, you know,” Pori said quietly. “Ahuva is a mature girl. She is safe and she just got delayed somewhere. This won’t end in tragedy, not everything does, you know.” Pori’s words carried wisdom that was mature beyond her years.

Laya clutched her phone. She watched her knuckles turn white as she whispered, “I hope so. I can’t do it again, I just can’t.” As she finished talking, the door swung open, and she was greeted by a red faced Ahuva, who was breathing heavily and clutching onto someone for support.

“She’s here!” Laya cried and placed the phone on the counter, ignoring Pori’s cries of “What? What?” coming through the receiver. The girl standing beside Ahuva looked so familiar…. she just couldn’t place it. I know this girl. I know her well. I know those glorious blue eyes and chocolate brown hair. Somehow, somewhere, little girl, I have known you. Watching the stranger and her daughter, she was hit with an epiphany that startled her. I don’t know which was is more of a stranger to me. My own daughter is a stranger, just like this girl. Somewhere along this painful journey, I have nurtured Brocha in my mind. Somewhere along the way, I have cast her sister aside, and now I am dealing with the aftermath of my mistakes. ***

A day off had been in order. After all, how could my mind process so many different details overnight? I needed time to think, and I was lucky that my mother was so understanding about it. Good thing I don’t have to play hooky, I thought, remembering other times that I had done just that.

So when my mother told me to get out of the house and buy myself a treat, I decided to head to my favorite ice cream store. Yes, it was on the way home from school, but school was long out for the day, and I doubted I would meet anyone there at this hour.

I ordered my favorite peanut butter sundae and watched with satisfaction as the lady behind the counter swirled the creamy whip on top of my cup. “To go please,” I reminded her. She smiled and snapped on the cover.

“Have a great day,” I told her after I paid and carefully accepted my sundae from her hands. Walking down the avenue, I allowed my body to relax. I breathed in the crisp air, wondering when the real winter would set in.

I had only walked for three minutes when I spotted two girls, sitting on the benches that lined the avenue. My peanut butter sundae suddenly felt heavy and slippery in my grasp. With weak knees, I tried to walk fast and pretend I hadn’t seen them.

Martin and Yosef spend time together over Sukkos. After Yom Tov, Yosef goes with Martin to get his picture taken for his new passport. He is extremely paranoid of being photographed, which makes him realize that he’s probably not up to traveling right now.

CHAPTER SIXTY F OUR

Despite Yosef’s grim mood that afternoon, he woke up the next day charged with energy – which worried Hinda.

She wanted to make him another appointment with Dr. Brand but was afraid to clip his wings. If the idea of traveling to Michoel filled him with so much vitality, she didn’t want to be the one to snuff it out. She would just gently insinuate, in little bits at a time, that it wasn’t certain that this plan would actually pan out, at least not as long as the directors of the facility where Michoel was, did not give more information about their exact location, and if they were willing to accept him.

“Ima, you’ll go with me to the embassy, right? Our appointment is early this afternoon,” he said after breakfast, which he'd eaten together with Martin. Their friendship was interesting. Yosef could engage in conversation with the Canadian youth for a long time, but then he could abruptly withdraw into himself and not exchange a word with him for the next hour

“It’s going to be Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan soon, so I need

to start my tzedakah rounds,” Hinda said. “But yes, I can work my collections around this trip. The documents are ready, right?”

“Yup. Okay, that's great, then!” He grabbed a bentcher from the holder in the middle of the table and began to bentch with gusto.

Hinda watched him, feeling very uneasy. Never, in all the years of Yosef’s illness, did she remember seeing him like this.

Dov’s phone rang a moment before he left for the office. Yosef was already in his room, and Martin was about to go up to his room, so that he could continue working through the stack of books Dov had given him to read. Hinda could hear Dov gasp. A minute later, he retraced his steps from the front door to the kitchen, where Hinda was.

“It’s Penina,” he told Hinda. “You hear? She and the baby fell together, and the little one got hurt, and they’re taking them now to Tel Hashomer hospital.”

“The hospital!” Hinda’s eyes opened wide. “Poor thing! What happened exactly?”

“I have no idea. The baby was shrieking so loud, it was hard to hear Penina.”

“If she was shrieking, that's a good sign…” his wife murmured. “Oy, that's so hard. I'm assuming Zevi is going along with them, right?”

“Yes,” Dov said, rummaging in his jacket pocket for his keys. “And I’m also going to go. Do you want to come

along?”

“If you think I can be useful there, then sure.”

“Of course you can be useful there,” he said. “What’s the question!”

Hinda put the dirty breakfast dishes on the counter, as they were, and hurried to her room to get ready. Poor Penina! To have her little baby fall and hurt herself…

“What does ‘injured’ mean?” she asked Dov, after she’d quickly put herself together. She stuck two bottles of mineral water and some fruit into a bag. Penina probably hadn’t taken anything along to eat.

“Her hand is very swollen.”

“Did she throw up?”

“I don’t think so.”

“And you said you heard the baby crying?”

“Yes, screaming.”

“Let’s hope she didn’t hit her head. In any case, they won’t want to release such a small baby so fast, even if it’s only a broken arm…” Hinda grabbed her bag from the table. Just then Yosef emerged from his room. “You’re going out?” he asked, with narrowed eyes.

“Yes, I’m going to Tel Hashomer. Dov’s granddaughter fell, and she’s been taken to the hospital. We'll have to reschedule our appointment at the embassy, Yosef. I'm sorry. But this is a medical emergency, and I'm sure they'll give us another appointment very soon once I explain to them what happened.”

Yosef glanced darkly at the open door to the house, then went back to his room and slammed the door shut.

“Can I help with something?” Martin asked politely. Hinda hesitated. “Please, just keep an eye on Yosef,” she said quietly. “I’m a little…anxious about the way he’s been acting lately.”

He nodded.

A moment or two later, Yosef emerged from the room again. “Are they gone?” he asked.

“Yes. A little baby fell. It was important for them to go be there with her.”

“Okay, I’m also going out.”

“Where to?” Martin asked.

“Do you think you’re my babysitter?” He was holding a slim red bag, his shirt was partially untucked, and he had a wild look about him. “I’m going wherever I want to go.” He rushed out of the house and called the elevator. It came, and he got inside—but a moment later, he stepped out. Then he got in again, and then stepped back out.

His finger planted on the call button on the outside, he leaned on the wall with closed eyes. Martin stood inside the house, observing him from the open door.

“Come with me!” Yosef suddenly called to Martin. Martin went out of the house and walked down the hall to him. “Come with you? Where to?”

“To the American Embassy. I have an appointment there to renew my passport. What, you think I’m going to wait for my mother to come with me? She’s got too many other important things going on in her life.”

“She’s very worried about you, too, you know,” Martin said. “I’m sure that if you would chalilah fall and break a hand, she would go with you to the hospital right away, too.”

“Don’t talk to me about bad things that could happen to me!” Yosef was so tense that he could hardly string together coherent sentences. But Martin, whose command of Hebrew wasn’t that great, didn’t really notice.

“Fine,” he said. “It was only an example. And maybe, instead of getting annoyed that your mother left, you should daven for this baby.”

“She should have a refuah sheleimah and be fine, amen,” Yosef snapped. "Nu, come, we’re going to Yerushalayim. My mother has so much pity for Dov’s granddaughter, but when it comes to her Uncle Michoel, she doesn’t. Poor guy.”

He was silent until they were seated on the Jerusalembound bus. Then he asked, “You know computers, right?”

“Yes.” Martin smiled. “Why?”

“And you’re sure the photographer really erased my picture? I’m scared.”

“He erased it.”

“I’m afraid he didn’t.”

“I checked it," Martin said. "It’s erased.”

“I’m afraid not. They want to follow me, I know.”

“Why should they want to follow you?”

“Maybe to kidnap me.”

“Why would they want to kidnap you?”

“So that someone will pay a ransom for me.”

“Come on, Yosef. Who should pay the ransom? Your parents aren’t so rich. Kidnappers prefer to target millionaire families, not people like you.”

“Maybe this Dov is really a millionaire, and he just isn’t revealing it to my mother.” Yosef bit his thumb. It was trembling. So was his chin.

“So let them kidnap his children, not you.”

“But they didn’t go take pictures like I did!” Yosef shouted. Heads on the bus turned in their direction. “I was such a fool, and now who knows what they will do with my picture!”

“You want to go back to Haifa?” Martin asked, and immediately regretted it. All that hapless photographer needed was Yosef to storm into his store with accusations. Chances were that it would not end well.

“No!” Yosef’s eyes were ablaze. “I’m going to the embassy. I need to renew my passport. I need to save Michoel!”

But his eyes were so clouded. Yosef suddenly seemed very different than the way he’d been the past few days. Martin was afraid that the look in his eyes was indicative of an impending storm, threatening them both. ***

Little Batsheva’s CT scan was baruch Hashem clear, and an x-ray showed that indeed, there was a fracture in her hand. This hardly seemed to comfort Penina, who was crying nonstop, although she did murmur tearfully at one point, “Baruch Hashem, it’s not a head injury.” The team in the pediatric emergency room seemed friendly to the young couple, but when they asked over and over again, “How did it happen?” something cracked inside Penina.

“I didn’t do it on purpose!” she shouted to the young female doctor whose fortune it was to be the eighth one to ask the question. “I didn’t do it on purpose, okay?

When will you get that?! I was walking with her in my arms, and I bumped into the edge of the table. I fell, with her, and at the last second, I gripped her in a way that I would absorb the brunt of the fall and she wouldn’t fall right on her head. Is that good enough for you?!” And she continued to sob, but louder this time.

“Mom, you need to calm down,” the second doctor chimed in, trying to sound warm. “We’re not suspecting you of any bad intentions. But when such a young child comes in with a story of an injury, it is our job to find out exactly what happened. That’s all.”

Penina turned her gaze away from the doctor and kept rocking Batsheva’s carriage gently. The baby had finally fallen asleep after her tiny hand was casted; she was exhausted from all the pain and the shrieking.

“Should I bring you a drink?” one of the two nurses, who had dashed into the room, asked Penina. She didn’t want

to think about how they knew to join at this very moment.

“No,” she answered with a sniff, as she rummaged in the diaper bag for a package of tissues. “Thanks.”

Just then Dov and Hinda walked in. Penina’s weeping picked up all over again. She didn’t remember ever seeing Hinda hug anyone before, but now Hinda hugged her, and Penina cried bitterly in her arms. “It was so scary…” she gulped. “I thought that I was going to lose her…”

Zevi, who had gone to speak with the orthopedist, entered the room, bringing over a chair for his wife. He looked overjoyed to see the guests. “I’m so glad to see you,” he said with relief. “Thank you so much for coming. Should I get some more chairs?”

“We prefer that you don’t,” the doctor said. “We can’t have family gatherings here. Maybe it would be wise for the men to stay here, and this kind grandmother can take Mom outside a bit for some air, alright?”

Penina went pale. “Do you want to tell my husband something that you don’t want me to hear?” she asked tremulously.

“Not at all. We just think it will be good for you to get some fresh air, that’s all.”

Hinda and Penina went out to the waiting room. “I want to be home already,” Penina whimpered as she sat down on a bench shaped like a flower. “But they said she’s going to have to stay here at least until tomorrow.”

Hinda sat down beside her. “I imagined that would be the case.” She took out a greenish tangerine and peeled it; then she handed Penina one segment at a time. “They say these are still a bit unripe, but I think that the tart flavor is actually quite delicious.”

“Yes…” Penina murmured as she ate the segments quietly.

Hinda’s phone rang. And then again, and again. At first she ignored it, but when it kept ringing, Penina said to her, “You can answer it, it’s fine. I’m not hysterical anymore.”

Hinda leaned back against the large red plastic petal of the bench and answered the phone. It was Michoel.

“They approved it!” he cried excitedly. “They are willing to accept Yosef for treatment! You can fax his medical documents over to here; I'll give you the fax number. This is major progress!”

DYSLEXIA AND SOCIAL IQ

Q: My son was recently diagnosed with dyslexia. I was actually relieved to find out about his learning disability because now my husband and I finally understand what was going wrong with him for so many years in school. But, now that I understand his academic issues, I am trying to make sense of his social problems. He seems so much more immature than the other children his age. Can this be linked to dyslexia?

A: What you are going through is not a unique experience. Contrary to what most might think, many parents feel relief when they finally understand the underlying reason behind their child’s academic struggles.

Now, let’s talk about social issues connected to dyslexia. You are spoton when you ask about his dyslexia being connected to problems with his peers and classmates. Whereas people used to believe that emotional disorders caused dyslexia, experts now agree that this is quite the opposite. Children who are dyslexic experience no trouble socially until they begin to learn to read and write in kindergarten. Early reading instruction does not match their learning style – and that is where the problems arise!

Time and again, dyslexic children hear, “He’s such a smart kid. If

only he would try harder, he would succeed.” Ironically, no one knows just how hard these children are trying, yet they continue to fail miserably because their minds simply do not work the way normative reading instruction is taught. Their frustration mounts and they begin to think that it is “terrible” to make a mistake. It is no wonder, then, that dyslexic children have trouble interacting socially. Below, I have outlined some of the specific social problems children with dyslexia may experience:

• Low self-esteem. Children who constantly feel that they are failing even when they are trying will develop a poor sense of self. This in turn will lead to less peer acceptance.

• Difficulty reading social cues. One element of dyslexia may be the inability to read social cues. Dyslexic children might be oblivious to the amount of personal space needed or to facial expressions that indicate emotions.

• Impaired oral language. Though dyslexia primarily affects reading, it can also impair oral language functioning. Children might have trouble finding the right words or may stammer.

The above issues, while not primary symptoms of dyslexia, can very

real side effects. Luckily, there are many things that parents can do to help their dyslexic children better socialize.

First, from a young age, you must create a positive and encouraging environment. Instead of focusing on your child’s failures, emphasize his successes. Of course, you should continue to push your child forward, but do not think concentrate on his failures.

Next, find an activity that your child is particularly skilled at. Some dyslexic children are wonderful at playing musical instruments, others are extremely artistic, while still others are supremely athletic. Once you discover what your child’s passion is, help him pursue it. This will boost his self esteem tremendously.

Most importantly, it is important for you to help your child set attainable goals. Often, he will choose unrealistic or impossible goals that will only make him feel inadequate. Setting a goal that is achievable and then encouraging your child to rejoice in his success will work wonders for his self worth and his social IQ.

Because you now have a diagnosis, with time and a bit of patience, your child can now live up to his wondrous potential!

Like going to sleep at night later than planned, it happens way too often for comfort that pieces of my kallah jewelry go AWOL.

The latch on that earring must be loose, I fret as I find myself once again on my hands and knees, scouring the floor of my closet for the missing piece of jewelry. I only wore those diamonds once a week, how could I have lost it? It was the second time already. Okay, it’s not here, I admit, getting up from the floor. An acrid taste fills my mouth, and something suspicious stings my eyes. Why am I getting so worked up over an earring already?

Determinedly, I turn away from the offending closet with the missing earring and begin dumping my carefully folded piles of clothing haphazardly into the suitcase lying on my bed. I blink, trying to clear my eyes from the suspicious moisture.

I knew why. It would just be another reason I couldn’t make my mother-in-law happy with me, despite all my efforts.

“Hello!” Moishy says in a cheerful whisper as he enters the room. “All done Maariv and ready to help you pack!”

“Forget it,” I say, too loudly. Oh no, the twins better not wake up! “It’s fine, I’ll manage.”

Moishy looks at me, amazed. “What happened? You don’t want my help packing?”

“I do!” I nearly shout, and hastily shut the door of the room so the twins won’t hear me. “It’s just so crazy! The house is flying, and the twins are going to wake me up at the crack of dawn tomorrow, and I’m going to be exhausted because I stayed up to pack. And then we’re going to travel up to the bungalow colony with two hyper kids going crazy in the car, and then they’re expected to be on their best behavior for 48 hours straight! Whose definition of normal is that?!!”

I yank open a dresser drawer, eyes smarting again.

I’m so not a kvetcher. I don’t know why this is pushing all my buttons so badly.

“At least if they had day camp tomorrow, it would be a little easier,” I mutter into the pile of towels. “This week is the most insane week for me, when Zevy and Mutty are home all day in between

school and day camp.”

Moishy’s been listening quietly, a little shocked at my unusual vehemence. He sits down on his bed, looking thoughtful.

“Wow.” He says, and I look up. I try to crack a smile.

“Okay, it’s not so bad,” I start, but he holds up his hand.

“No, you’re right, Chani. We did discuss that it would be hard for you. You only gave in because it meant so much to my mother that we should be there the first week of the summer. But it’s turning out harder than expected.”

“Yeah,” I mutter. “And don’t forget that the boys need to show up bright and early Monday morning in day camp, all ready for summer. After coming home super-cranky because they were away from home for two days.”

This last comment sparks something in Moishy’s mind. I can see the “I have the perfect solution!” look on his face before he even opens his mouth. Inwardly, I groan. What’s he going to come up with?

“So how about we come home Motzaei Shabbos?” he exclaims. “I thought it would be nice to stay over Sunday when the boys are home anyway all day, but if it makes it easier to come home Motzaei Shabbos, then let's do that!"

"Your mother’s never going to let,” I mumble. But the idea sounds promising. A whole day less in my mother-in-law’s space and another day to prepare the kids for day camp would be great.

“I’ll talk to her,” Moishy promises. “Will it make it easier for you?”

“Yeah,” I say definitively. “It’s a great idea.”

“Perfect,” Moishy says, cranking himself up. “Now what can I do to help you pack?” ***

Right after licht benchen is always my best time. Moishy watches the kids for an hour before Shabbos so I can get ready for Shabbos calmly, and I finally get to feel like a normal person.

I finish benching licht and settle down on the couch with my angelic-looking boys, still fresh from their baths, wearing adorable matching Shabbos robes. They cuddle up to me, Mutty with his thumb in his mouth and Zevy holding his sippy

cup.

“Good Shabbos,” my mother-in-law says, sinking into the recliner facing me. I feel her discreet eye looking me up and down, but I don’t really feel uncomfortable. I know I look good-my makeup is flawless, my wig freshly done.

“Those are such pretty earrings,” my motherin-law says thoughtfully, admiring the silver on my ears. And my heart sinks.

Of course, she would immediately find the missing detail and notice that I wasn’t wearing my kallah earrings, the diamond hoops she’d carefully chosen for me.

I look down at Zevy to hide my roiling emotions. I knew I could never do it right by my mother-in-law.

“Soooo nice!” Mrs. Golding, my mother-inlaw’s bungalow neighbor says approvingly. “Aren’t you lucky to have such a mother-inlaw? Right away she invites you to come stay by her, the first Shabbos in the country!”

I smile, making sure none of the irony leaks onto my face. “Yes, it’s really beautiful here,” I say. And it’s true. There’s something extraordinarily peaceful about being surrounded by nature. Even if I counted some very annoying comments in the last 24 hours, which makes me too uptight to enjoy any of the beauty around me.

Chani, does Mutty need a bib before he eats kugel?

Can Zevy eat the soup himself?

I thought Mutty stopped sucking his thumb. I see he’s still having a hard time with it. My mother-in-law’s comments revolve in my head like a colorful carousel, making me too uptight to enjoy any of the beauty around me.

Mrs. Golding nods approvingly once more before heading into her bungalow. I should really say summer home, because these bungalows are outfitted with the latest modern furniture and every amenity. I’m here anyway, I may as well enjoy it, I think. Both of my boys are pumping energetically on their swings, singing at the top of their lungs. They’re too little to know how to get themselves really high, but they don’t seem to care, and they keep pumping. I smile again, this time a genuine one.

Surreptitiously, I close my eyes, hoping no one will notice.

Crash!!

“Mooommmy!!!” Desperate shrill wailing shakes me instantly awake. What’s going on?! Zevy’s screaming, Mutty seems to be shrieking along for the fun of it, and I feel like every eye is on me.

I scoop a muddy, dirty Zevy up from the floor, where he’s tangled in the swing that broke loose on him. He’s flailing, thrashing desperately in pain.

“Sha, sha, sha, Zevy, Mommy’s here,” I croon as I check for bruises. He looks okay, just badly frightened and a little banged up.

“Okay, time for Shabbos party!” I announce, as I attempt to get up with Zevy’s 30 pounds on me. I nearly buckle, then steady myself. “Come with Mommy!” I tell Mutty, who’s stuck his thumb in his mouth. Uh oh, his grandmother can absolutely not see him doing that.

“Come,” I urge again, trying to take Mutty’s hand without losing my grip on Zevy, whose crying has subsided to whimpering.

“Mommy’s going to give you Shabbos party!”

Mutty looks as mulish as only a two-year-old can, obviously insulted that his twin is being carried while he’s expected to walk.

With another coax, he finally starts moving reluctantly. I shlep my dirty kids to the bungalow, hoping that my mother-in-law is still enjoying her Shabbos afternoon nap. But no such luck, of course. My mother-in-law is sitting at the table sipping iced tea, reading a book.

“Good Shabbos!” I say cheerfully, pretending I’m not panting and covered in dirt.

My mother-in-law looks up. A horrified expression covers her face at the sight of us, which she quickly wipes away.

“What happened?” she asks with concern. I squirm inside.

“Zevy fell,” I say unceremoniously. “But he’s fine, and now Zevy and Mutty are ready for Shabbos party.”

“Okay,” my mother-in-law says. “But don’t you think they’d like to get washed up first?”

I don’t grit my teeth, although I’d love to.

“Of course, I was just going to do that,” I lie. Then I take both kids to the bathroom, change them from head to toe, and wash them thoroughly in the sink, despite their protests.

It sounds easier than it is, because while I’m changing Zevy, Mutty’s emptying a toilet paper roll, and while I change Mutty, Zevy runs the water in the sink delightedly. I hope

that my mother-in-law’s not listening outside the door of the bathroom.

Finally, I drag both clean kids back to the kitchen. My mother-in-law has used the time to cut up watermelon, fruit, and chips artfully on the table. She smiles at the sight of them all freshly changed.

“I wanna ‘loupe!” Zevy announces dramatically as I settle him into a chair. He jumps up on the chair and reaches, sending three bowls flying and their contents skittering across the table and onto the floor.

I will myself out of the room, but of course I still find myself there two seconds later, watching my mother-in-law purse her lips ever so slightly, obviously trying not to make me feel bad.

“I’ll be outside on a lawn chair,” she tells me brightly. Her unspoken message is clear: Make sure the room is clean when I come back. I just hope Moishy told her outright that we are leaving. Tonight. Not tomorrow. ***

Moishy did tell her. But my mother-in-law is still disappointed.

“It would have been so much fun for Zevy and Mutty to get to go to the pool,” she says regretfully. “And I was going to show you where they could go feed the ducks by the lake. Such a pity. You were here so short.”

“I’m sure Mutty and Zevy would have loved it,” I say, matching my tone of regret to hers.

“I just think that they need to be back on schedule before they start day camp.”

I know that, despite all the wreckage my kids have created in her perfect bungalow, my mother-in-law really does want us to stay. Easy for her to say, when I’m the one running myself ragged to make sure nothing too destructive happens and to clean up their messes.

And anyway, she has a cleaning lady on Sunday afternoons.

“Are you sure you don’t want to change your mind, Chani?” she asks, and I feel put on the spot. What am I supposed to say?

“I think we’re going to pack up now and go, Ma,” Moishy says as softly as he can. “We had such a wonderful time. We’ll definitely be back!”

My mother-in-law’s wistful expression follows me all the way to the back room, and I feel horribly guilty. I know that she’s lonely here all week, with all her kids married and most of them far away. My father-in-law’s never home

and she’s not a social butterfly. But I’m too selfish to stay here. And I can never make her happy anyway.

I feel even more guilty when I hear her talking to Moishy when he goes back to the kitchen.

“Do you really have to go? I feel like you’re always rushing out.” She says, and I know what she means. We do always cut our visits shorter than she likes.

Now I really feel awful. “I feel so bad,” I stagewhisper to Moishy when he comes back.

“Don’t,” he says authoritatively. “Feel good. We came this Shabbos only because she asked, right? We do what we can. It’s fine if we go back now.”

I bite my lip. I’m not perfect, but I am trying. Is that enough, though? ***

Sunday morning brings a thunderstorm that starts in the early morning. I feel vindicated. No pool today anyway! Then I feel a pang. My mother-in-law will be cooped up inside all day probably, and wishing we were there.

I let the boys sleep a little later than usual so that by the time they’re awake, the storm has quieted and there are lots of large puddles left on the street for them to jump in.

“Who wants to go jump in the puddles?” I ask cheerfully immediately after breakfast.

“Me! Me!” They shout excitedly, and I relish the thought of them getting soaked and dirty to their heart’s content with no one around to criticize it.

“Let’s take out the rain boots,” I say, leading the way to the coat closet. I pull out raincoats and rain boots for the kids, then bend down to remove my own rain booties.

Something glistens up at me from the coat closet floor. I pick it up without thinking, and then my heart catches in my throat.

It’s my earring.

The diamond earring I received from my mother-in-law as a kallah.

Something in my heart lifts, as I contemplate the no-longer-missing earring nestled in my palm. I don’t know what it means, finding this earring now, of all times, in the most random spot where I never would have looked for it.

But when I look out the window, I see the sun peeking through the clouds. And suddenly, I’m pretty sure it’s okay that I’m not perfect. Because only Hashem is perfect. •

Hiccups Could Be a Sign of Something Serious

· Hiccups can happen to anyone, at any age. Most are mild and stop within minutes, but in some cases, persistent hiccups may go on for months. These may indicate a significant health problem, including stroke, diabetes, kidney disease or cancer

· Certain irritations can trigger hiccups, such as eating or drinking too quickly, drinking very hot or cold liquid, carbonated beverages, consuming alcohol, overstretching your neck, or experiencing high levels of stress like fear or excitement

· Hiccups are an orphan symptom of cancer treatment, socalled as they are more common than most doctors know and are seldom evaluated. Chronic hiccups can lead to fatigue, lower food intake, weight loss, sleep deprivation and aspiration pneumonia, which may hasten death in cancer patients

· It’s crucial to learn how to live with chronic hiccups until they can be stopped. Avoid triggers that increase the risk of hiccups such as spicy food or carbonated drinks, sip water throughout the day to stay hydrated, and take small bites to lower the risk of aspiration

· There is anecdotal evidence that some home remedies can stop hiccups, such as breathing into a paper bag, sipping vinegar or swallowing sugar, gently applying pressure over the eyeballs, squeezing the fingernail on the pinky finger for 10 seconds or stimulating the vagus and phrenic nerve while swallowing

Hiccups can happen to anyone at any age. Although there is no consensus on the role that hiccups play in adults, researchers from University College London announced in 2019 that hiccups in newborns trigger brain signals, which may help the infant learn how to regulate their breathing.

Hiccups describe the sound that is triggered by spasms in the diaphragm. The diaphragm separates your abdomen and your chest, resting under your rib cage. It plays an important role in breathing. As the diaphragm moves downward it creates negative pressure in the chest and you inhale. When you exhale, the diaphragm moves back into place.

An involuntary spasm of the diaphragm causes you to suck in air and at the same time the glottis closes to prevent more air coming in. This causes the classic ‘hic’ sound of the hiccup. For most people, hiccups are self-limited and last for several minutes. They are usually nothing more than annoying. However, for others, hiccups can be persistent, lasting over two days, or intractable when they last over one month.

If you have multiple episodes of hiccups over a prolonged time, this is also considered chronic hiccups. Intractable or chronic hiccups can become a medical issue in and of itself. However, what is also known is that chronic or intractable hiccups in adults are associated with several medical conditions, including cancer.

Chronically Persistent Hiccups May Signal Something Serious

A 2022 case study presented in the Open Journal of Urology discussed the case of a 66-year-old man with a twoyear history of intractable hiccups. When he presented to the physician, he had no symptoms that were suggestive of kidney cancer. However, an abdominal CT scan revealed a welldefined mass on the right kidney that was growing into the perirenal space.

The researchers noted that 80% of intractable hiccups could be traced to an organic cause and the remaining 20% were linked to a psychogenic trigger. They wrote that “Pathologies in the adrenal glands and kidney, particularly the superior pole, irritate the diaphragm and phrenic and vagus nerves, activating the hiccup reflex.”

Tumors that irritate the diaphragm and phrenic nerve may trigger chronic or intractable hiccups. This can include liver cancer, pancreatic cancer or pancreatitis, bowel cancer, renal cancer and adrenal tumors. In addition to being a presenting sign of tumor growth, hiccups occur in as many as 40% of cancer patients.

Dr. Aminah Jatoi, a medical oncologist from Mayo Clinic Rochester, and two colleagues developed a survey to gauge health care providers’ understanding and awareness of the significance of hiccups in patients with cancer. Ninety completed surveys were returned from physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and physician assistants.

The survey found hiccups were an under-recognized issue in cancer patients and even when it was recognized and treated, 20% of the health care providers noted that current therapies were not effective, and more treatment options are needed.

A 2013 paper suggested that refractory hiccups may be associated with hyponatremia, and physicians should consider this in their differential diagnosis when cancer patients

present with chronic hiccups. A 2021 paper noted that one-fifth of the cancer patients in their study suffered from hiccups and 54.1% of those had gastrointestinal cancer.

As The Atlantic notes, cancer patients may have two ways that hiccups are triggered. Those who have cancer close enough to irritate the phrenic nerve, such as tumors in the chest, throat or head may have a higher risk of developing chronic or intractable hiccups. Researchers have also found that the drugs used to treat cancer, such as chemotherapy and steroids, also increase the risk.

Other Medical Conditions Associated With Chronic Hiccups

As you have likely noticed, certain things can trigger mild hiccups that go away within minutes. Anytime you eat or drink too quickly, drink very hot or cold liquid, drink carbonated beverages or alcohol or overstretch your neck, you may trigger mild hiccups. Additionally, hiccups can start when you experience high levels of stress, such as fear and excitement.

In addition to certain types of cancer, chronic or intractable hiccups are also associated with other serious health conditions. As with the types of cancers that trigger chronic hiccups, these health concerns can irritate the diaphragm or phrenic nerve.

A 2021 paper presented the case history of a man with Parkinson's disease who developed severe hiccups when taking dopamine agonists to treat the disease, but the hiccups did not occur when using Levodopa, a central nervous system agent. Corticosteroids, benzodiazepines, acid reflux drugs, barbiturates and opioids are also associated with drug-induced hiccups.

The Benefit of Treating Orphan Symptoms for Cancer Patients

Hiccups are one of the “orphan symptoms” in cancer patients, which are symptoms that are seldom evaluated in assessment tools. Yet, as The Atlantic describes Colleen Kennedy's experience during chemotherapy and radiation treatment for stage 3 lung cancer, the pain and discomfort can be overwhelming.

“She hadn’t expected the hiccup fits that started about halfway through her first treatment round. They left her gasping for air and sent pain ricocheting through her already tender body. At times, they triggered her gag reflex and made her throw up.

After they subsided, she felt tired, sore, breathless — as if she’d just finished a tough workout. They were, Kennedy, now 54, told me, “nothing compared to what we would consider normal hiccups at all.” They lasted for nearly a year.”

In most people, hiccups are transient

and appear to develop randomly. This makes them extremely difficult to study. A 2015 systematic revie found only 341 patients across 15 published studies who had been treated for persistent or intractable hiccups. Based on the paucity of data, the researchers concluded “This systematic review revealed no high-quality data on which to base treatment recommendations.”

While the condition may be difficult to treat, it can be very challenging for patients. A 2022 paper in BMC Cancer evaluated 320 patients and found the median age when hiccups were first reported in this group of cancer patients was 63 years and was notably more prevalent in men than women.

In the group of 320 patients, 89% who reported hiccups were men and only 11% were women. In 62% of the patients, hiccups were reported daily; nine patients had daily hiccups for over six weeks; five had symptoms for years.

Hiccups are a nuisance for most people, but chronic or intractable hiccups can lead to weight loss, lower food intake, sleep deprivation, fatigue and aspiration pneumonia. They can also trigger anxiety, depression and decreased cognitive function. In patients with cancer, some of these issues can hasten death.

Tips to Cope With Chronic Hiccups

When home remedies or off-label medications do not successfully stop chronic or intractable hiccups, it is crucial to learn how to live with them. Charles Osborne had a case of intractable hiccups that lasted 68 years. His was the longest-recorded case as confirmed by Guinness World Records.

Osborne was born in 1893 and developed hiccups after he fell and hit

his head. Kevern Koskovich described how Osborne managed his hiccups to the Smithsonian Magazine as he experienced up to 40 diaphragmatic spasms each minute.

“He’d flex his chest three or four times every minute,” says Koskovich, who knew one of Osborne’s sons and now lives in nearby Correctionville, Iowa. “You could tell he was hiccupping, but he wouldn’t make any noise. He heaved — that’s the best way to describe it.”

For unknown reasons, Osborne's hiccups stopped suddenly in 1990. He died in May 1991 at the age of 97. For most people, chronic hiccups are stressful and disrupt normal routines. Trying to explain the condition can help alleviate some stress.

Chronic hiccups make it difficult to sleep, which in turn lowers your energy level the next day and may trigger you to eat more to stay awake. However, the hiccups also make it difficult to eat and drink, which can lead to weight loss, dehydration and malnutrition. People with chronic or intractable hiccups find it easier to eat smaller amounts during the day as opposed to three larger meals.

Carbonated drinks and spicy food can trigger hiccups, so they should be avoided. It may be easier to drink small amounts of liquid throughout the day to stay hydrated. Since hiccups are unpredictable, they can increase the risk of choking on food or drink, so taking small mouthfuls can help prevent aspiration.

Home Remedies That May Help Alleviate Hiccups

When you're trying to get rid of mild hiccups at home, there are a few remedies you can try. The idea is to engage in activity that interrupts the

hiccup reflex, which hopefully stops the hiccups. If these remedies are not successful, or your hiccups continue to reoccur, it may be time to identify what is irritating the vagus or phrenic nerves.

Supra-supramaximal inspiration — Inhale and hold your breath for 10 seconds. Before exhaling, inhale two more times, each time holding your breath for five seconds.

Breathing into a paper bag — This raises your CO2 level.

Stimulate the vagus nerve — Pull on your tongue, drink or gargle a cold drink, place gentle pressure over your eyeballs, sip vinegar or swallow sugar. Stimulating the uvula or posterior nasopharynx with nasal vinegar or smelling salts, gargling or gagging may also stimulate the vagus nerve.

Compressing the chest — Bring your knees to your chest and hug them or lean forward while sitting.

Movement — Dr. Tyler Cymet, vice president for institutional effectiveness at the Maryland College of Osteopathic Medicine, has found some treatments that work up to 25% of the time, including breathing exercises, yoga and Pilates.

Acupressure point — Squeeze the surface of the fingernail on the pinky finger for 10 seconds.32 Dr. John Talbot believes this has worked on just over 50% of the people he’s used it on.

Nerve stimulation while swallowing — Ali Seifi was a neurosurgeon at the University of Texas Health Science Center when he invented the HiccAway. Seifi explains that sucking water forcefully through a bent device, or drinking through a thick paper towel, draws the diaphragm down while swallowing, which breaks the spasm cycle.

Aquatic-based workouts have many benefits and do not necessarily mean you have to swim laps. Additionally, aquatic workouts are great for people of many ages and have incredible health benefits. Swimming is a form of low-impact exercise that helps build cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength. Swimming requires a high level of endurance as the entire body needs to move through the water—while the legs kick, the arms pull. As the back reaches and rotates, the stomach tightens to power the legs and stabilize the core, making swimming one of the best aerobic exercises to give you a total body workout. Just 30 minutes in a pool is worth 45 minutes of the same activity on land!

Let’s focus on some of the benefits of swimming:

• Aquatic workouts are easy on the joints. Aquatic workouts are low impact and require minimal weight bearing, making it easier on the joints. This is ideal for those who are overweight, injured, pregnant or have pain with traditional workout options. The water provides buoyancy to help take off some of the impact. Because it is low impact, water workouts may provide opportunities to perform

movements otherwise not tolerated on land due to pain or difficulty.

• Water is a cooling exercise. As the weather heats up, working out in the heat brings its own concerns. Aquatic workouts can help you feel cool while exercising. If sweating puts you off other forms of exercise, fear not! As a swimmer, you’ll never feel sweaty no matter how hard you work because the water around you is constantly cooling you down. Just remember the sunscreen!

• De-stresses and relaxes. Swimming is calming and meditative, as the sound of your breathing and the water rushing by helps you focus inward and drown out all other distractions. This lowers stress and depression naturally. Swimming regularly can lower stress levels, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve your sleep patterns. Feeling the mental benefits of swimming takes just a light swim. No crazy number of laps needed.

• Increases your energy levels. Just 30 minutes of swimming three times per week can boost your energy levels through increased metabolic rate.

• Burning calories. Everyone knows swimming is a great way to burn calories, but most don’t realize that it can be just as efficient as jumping on

the treadmill. Swimming can burn equal or greater calories than running, depending on the stroke you choose and your intensity. Additionally, you don’t have to worry about sweat in your eyes. For example: for 10 minutes of swimming, you burn 60 calories with the breaststroke, 80 calories with the backstroke, 100 calories with freestyle, and an impressive 150 calories with the butterfly stroke.

For perspective, running a 10-minute mile burns around 100 calories. Therefore, a solid 30-minute butterfly speed session can burn 150 more calories than running a 5K in the same time frame.

There are many workout classes available in water as well, including Zumba, water aerobics, and water spin class on submerged bicycles. I always advise my clients when it comes to exercise in general, that it is not about quantity, but rather, quality. Forcing yourself to swim 100 laps, because that is a number that equates to success in your mind, cannot come close to the 20 slow and calm laps, where you concentrated on using all your muscles correctly. In order to reap the benefits of a really good swim, use the time to think and let your mind go a little bit. You will leave the pool feeling strengthened, both physically and mentally. Slow and steady wins the race!

Ilive in Lakewood and I follow your column with interest. The chizuk you provide is really remarkable, and it reaches further than you can imagine.

I want to share a story – an anecdote, actually – that happened recently. It proved to me, once again, that if someone really wants to do what’s right, Hashem makes it happen.

I had a medical consultation in Manhattan. It wasn’t the first time, and in the past I had managed to avoid the long trip into Manhattan by conducting the appointment over the telephone.

“Can we set up a telephone appointment?” I asked, in all innocence.

“Oh, no, I’m so sorry,” the receptionist replied. “We don’t do telephone appointments. If it’s hard to come in person, we can set it up on Zoom.”

“No, that’s not an option,” I said, with absolute resolve. “I’ve done this via telephone in the past…”

I let my sentence dangle, but the receptionist didn’t even wait for the desired effect. He simply explained, “Since the COVID-19 Pandemic is officially over, the telephone appointments are no longer an option. You can come in person or set up a Zoom meeting.”

Zoom was out of the question. I had no doubts on that account. If I had to travel all the way to Manhattan to avoid Internet usage, I was ready to do it. But I figured one more try couldn’t hurt.

“I have an online account

managed by the ProClick company,” I said. “Could they just click on the link as if we’re initiating a Zoom meeting, while I speak to the doctor over the telephone?”

There was a shocked silence, and then I got my miracle.

“Well, the Zoom meeting is actually required solely for insurance purposes,” the dry voice informed me. “If someone clicks that link for you, we have no issue with conducting the appointment via telephone. The doctor doesn’t actually have to see you during the conversation.”

I was blown away. The Zoom meeting was an absolute…until Hashem sent me the courage to try one more time. Who would’ve believed that all it needed was a click at ProClick?

They clicked.

I spoke on the telephone.

I did not have to access the internet, nor did I have to travel hours along congested highways and byways.
