Ararat gala celebration

CE Radio Broadcasters’ Rowly and Judy Paterson have won statewide recognition for their support of Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation.

Foundation chairman David Mann presented the couple with a Gold Community Service Medal, the foundation’s most prestigious award, during a celebration in Ararat. The award recognised the Patersons’ service to Ararat and district community, Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation’s Ararat Branch and East Grampians Health Service. The Patersons were among more than 200 guests at the Ararat branch’s 16th annual gala night, which raised money to support the Ararat district health service. Ararat branch president Terry Weeks and Member for Ripon Louise Staley also presented the ACE Radio team with a Silver Community Service Medal in recognition of its outstanding contribution to Victoria Po-

lice Blue Ribbon Foundation’s Ararat branch from 2002-2017. Jon Vertigan from radio program ‘The Morning Rush’ accepted the award on behalf of the ACE Radio team. The event was at Ararat College gymnasium in lieu of Ararat Performing Arts Centre being closed for redevelopment and as a result had a ‘wicked shoes and wedges’ theme. Mr Vertigan and fellow radio announcer Kate Meade compered the night, introducing Mr Weeks for official formalities. Mr Weeks told the audience the Ararat branch had fulfilled its $150,000 commitment to East Grampians Health Service’s Jason Bond Perioperative Unit, a project launched at a gala night in 2015. “We will now work with East Grampians Health Service and the foundation on our next project,” he said. Mr Weeks also acknowledged Ararat College for ‘coming on board’ and offering the venue for the night and the ACE Radio network for its continued

support. “The Ararat branch team is so humbled by all the ongoing support we have had since we started back in 2002,” he said. Other speakers included Victorian Government Cabinet Secretary Mary-Anne Thomas, who spoke on behalf of Police Minister Lisa Neville, acknowledging the work of Victoria Police and the partnership involving Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation, which honours officers killed in the line of duty.

Regional success

Mr Mann spoke about the work of the foundation and particularly regional branches and their contributions to support health services. As a finale to the formalities Victoria Police Wimmera Superintendent Paul Margetts acknowledged the work of district police officers before inviting Michael and Lindy Bond, parents of the late Jason Bond, to the floor. Mrs Bond thanked people for supporting the Jason Bond

Perioperative Unit project before guests took a moment to remember police officers killed in the line of duty. After formalities a band made up of police officers from the district and beyond, called No Banana Ruby, helped get dancing underway. A gala silent auction featuring Melbourne auctioneer Phil de Fegely followed, with guests raising $17,000. A second band, Geelong’s Good Faces 4 Radio, then took to the stage to conclude the night, playing music from the ’80s through to latest hits. Mr Weeks, in summing up the event, said the Ararat branch was indebted to the ongoing generosity of so many in the community to this year’s event, particularly with the change of venue. He said it was a great effort all round. “Hopefully when we finalise our money we will achieve our target of $30,000 which will assist in our work for East Grampians Health Service,” he said.
