Tucker shines in draft assessment AFL draft hopeful Darcy Tucker of Horsham has aerobic endurance as an ally in his attempt to force his way into the best football competitiom in the land. Tucker, who joined other elite junior footballers in a four-day AFL Draft Combine skills and physiological assessment program, shone in a shuttle-run beep test. He produced the third best result in the test, designed to challenge participants’ ability to continually beat the clock. He also did well in a relative vertical jump test.

AFL club recruiting staff members use the annual program to assess everything from players’ fitness and skill level to mental application and personality. Tucker had interviews with representatives from almost a dozen clubs during the program. He will now wait with other hopefuls across the country for the result of the November 24 AFL draft. Tucker progressed from Horsham Saints in Wimmera league to elite junior company with North Ballarat Rebels in the under-18 TAC Cup.

BY SUE PERBSHOT

‘Flick the switch, Rich’ was the cry as club stalwart Richard Blakey turned on the lights to new light towers at dusk to complete the missing link and make Stawell Tennis Club a complete day-night venue.

In perfect weather conditions the club’s Friday night tennis competition got underway with four teams – Frewstal, David O Jones Mitre 10, Stawell Toyota and Farrers Tyrepower – hitting the courts. Frewstal started the season on a high with a 35-game advantage over David O Jones to lead the competition after round one.
