Going for Broke League-themed film that will touch all of us

KATHERINE TWEED

enrith’s second-to-none rugby league following has the opportunity to be part of the creation of ‘Broke’, an Australian fi lm about a former rugby league star’s struggle with a gambling addiction. The fi lmmakers have launched a ‘crowd funding’ campaign, hoping to raise $55,000 toward the creation of the inspirational fil m, and are calling on the local community for assistance. Donations fund the fi lm’s creation with all profits made to be donated to the Men of League Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation supporting members of the rugby league community who are doing it tough. “I call it the people’s fi lm: everyone can be a part of it, no-one really profits and we get an important message out there,” said Penrithborn director, Heath Davis. Following a strong rugby league theme, the fi lm explores issues affecting many Australian families, particularly gambling and alcohol addiction. “It’s a fi lm about compassion, second chances

and humanity,” Mr Davis said. “There has been a lot of stuff happening off the field at the moment [in the NRL]. The sport has been getting a lot of bad press because these players are in the spotlight but these are issues that everyone can suffer from.” The fi lm is supported by a number of NRL greats and with $22,000 in donations already

accepted, it is well on its way to becoming a reality. To help reach the $55,000 target, donations of as little as $1 can be made, with certain perks along the way; these include having your name in the credits, having the opportunity to act in the fi lm and more.
