Council to consider masterplan for future of historic Fernhill Estate Simon Tripp says Fernhill Estate is one of Au stralia’s “m ost imp ortant pr ivate residences”, but its future is shrouded in controversy and confusion...
s Simon Tripp explains the significance of each room and building on the Fernhill Estate, you can see his passion for the property and its future. The Tripp family has submitted its masterplan for the historic Fernhill Estate in Mulgoa, the original home of William Cox, with an equestrian centre for excellence and function centre at the core. There is also a proposal on the table for the creation of two residential areas; at the eastern corner of the estate for 54 homes on blocks of approximately 1,100sqm and 38 blocks in the western precinct of the property with a minimum size of two hectares. Simon and his wife Brenda say they are wholly invested in re-opening Fernhill to the public and preserving it for future generations. “One thing is for sure about Fernhill, it cannot stay the same, there must be change,” Mr Tripp said. “The history of the property shows that it cannot be a gentlemen’s retreat – the maintenance costs are too high. “When we saw Fernhill we knew it had to be opened up to the public, it is after all, one of Australia’s most important private residences.”

The Tripp family, who have a reputation in equestrian circles for their showjumping, want to make equestrian one of Fernhill’s lasting legacies. “Australia has never won a medal in showjumping and it is our dream that we will produce the fi rst gold medal, and we have high hopes with Tom McDermott and my daughters Sam and Jess,” Simon said. Establishing an Equestrian Centre for Excellence will attract equestrian events and competitions and Mr Tripp said that agistment fees will bring in a steady revenue stream that will be used to maintain Fernhill Estate. In their stables are 12 przewalski ponies that are almost extinct, as well as a horse purchased from Australian Olympian, Edwina Alexander. But the grounds of Fernhill Estate are equally impressive and the Tripps plan to open their home to venue hire for weddings, corporate events and other celebrations. “The ballroom is one of the main function rooms that the family just doesn’t use and it is perfect for events,” Mr Tripp said. He points out that prime ministers and dignitaries would have graced the same floorboards two hundred years ago – the sandstone step in the doorway is worn down from centuries of footsteps. “We have established a good relationship with Penrith Panthers and board their young stars, they help out with work around the property,” Mr Tripp said. “There are also other facilities like the Hayshed, which are beautiful settings for parties.” Major events such as concerts and the Fernhill Races will also become regular.
The ballroom in Fernhill will be used for functions. Photo: Melinda Jane.
Biobanking to preserve Cumberland Plain Woodlands is also proposed, and to generate additional income, some of the land in the western and eastern precincts will be subdivided. “There are two options; our plan is to ensure Fernhill is locked in on a 1,500 acre block. If we don’t go down that path, Fernhill sits on multiple land titles and could easily be subdivided off and cease to exist,” Mr Tripp said.
“We don’t want that to happen. That’s why we are proposing to subdivide a very small portion of the lands, in keeping with their existing surrounds.” Mr Tripp said he is confident that if Penrith Council agrees to the masterplan proposed, Fernhill could be out of its $60 million debt in two to three years. The masterplan is now available on Penrith City Council’s website for public consideration.

arry O’Farrell got it so right this week with his tough crackdown on alcohol-fuelled violence. Barry O’Farrell got it so wrong this week with his tough crackdown on alcohol-fuelled violence. Really, either paragraph works so just circle the one that suits you best. It’s been interesting to watch the response to Tuesday’s announcement that strict new regulations would be in force in Sydney’s drinking hot spots, including 1.30am lockouts and mandatory sentences for coward punches should the offender be drunk or on drugs. The response has generally been predictable and, whilst not trying to be overly stereotypical, falls into two pretty succinct categories. Those who are cheering and believe this tough stance from the Premier is spot on are generally over 40, with a fair bit of life experience behind them. The y may well have teenagers they are genuinely worried about, and they speak with authority when it comes to how things used to be out and about in town. Problem is, this group generally has zero experience of being out in the city or Kings Cross late at night, and their entire argument is based on cases the media happens to highlight. Th rough talkback radio stations like 2GB, beat-up current affairs TV shows and newspapers like The Daily Telegraph, they form a view on what it’s like and stick to it. However, despite their lack of experience when it comes to the actual situation, this group is politically influential and it is no surprise that Barry O’Farrell not only took the tough stance to ensure he was seen to be fi nding a solution, but also did the media rounds on Wednesday morning. Those who aren’t so happy about the move are generally younger, in their teenage years or their 20s. They live this every week – they know what it’s like out and about in the CBD and Kings Cross, and they know it’s not quite as bad as it is sometimes made out. They feel for the families of Tho mas Kelly and Daniel Christie, but probably haven’t had enough life experience to truly understand what it all means. And it seems, they feel like they are part of a majority being targeted for the actions of a minority.

Editorial:
So who’s right? Short answer – nobody. One thing we do need to strip away from this argument is the blanket opinions we seem to place on the whole scenario. Fact: Not all teenagers drink themselves into oblivion on a night out. Fact: Not all offenders who hit somebody unprovoked are singlet-wearing ‘roid munchers’. Fact: Alcohol is not the root of all evil, and we need to be careful with blaming it, rather than an individual, for particular actions. Fact: Not all nights in Kings Cross end with violence, vomiting and drama. Heck, I’d even argue that there’s plenty of teenagers out there far more responsible than when their parents were their age – how many of us have heard our parents talk about how they drove home full as a state school on alcohol because the chances of being caught were so minor? The reality is though that we do have a problem. Minority or not, there’s an issue that needs to be resolved. It’s true that alcohol is easier to get your hands on than Craig Thompson’s credit card, but I’m not sure that 10pm closing times for bottle shops or 1.30am lockouts are really the solution. In fact, I think some of the better parts of Barry O’Farrell’s plan have been buried beyond the highlighted points. Community awareness and media campaigns to address the culture of binge drinking and the associated drug and alcohol related violence is a real winner and if implemented correctly, can have a big influence on the next generation of teenagers on the verge of hitting the city. Free buses running from Kings Cross to the CBD every 10 minutes is another winner, though until we have reliable, 24-hour transport throughout the entire Sydney metropolitan area, its impact is not as big as it could be. Barry O’Farrell did what he’s employed to do this week – he acted with strength to an issue gaining significant traction in the wider community. It doesn’t mean he’s right. Nor does it mean he’s wrong. No government intervention, no lockout, no threat of minimum sentence can physically stop an individual from being a complete lunatic. Mr O’Farrell hopes that the lunatics will be less likely to cause drama now. I’ve got my doubts, because this whole thing goes so much deeper than nights out in Kings Cross or the city. It is about discipline, respect and attitude. And fi xing it may take a generation or more.

Shooting in Penrith: Man recovering in hospital

man shot at a Penrith hotel on Monday night remains in a stable condition in hospital. At about 9.45pm on Monday, January 20, police were called to Nepean Hospital were a 34-year-old Glenmore Park man had been admitted with an injury to his calf, which police say was a gunshot wound. After speaking with the man police soon established a crime scene at a room in the local hotel, where police allege the shooting occurred earlier that day. Police have refused to release the name of the hotel to the Weekender. Two people, a 40-year-old man, Michael Smith and a 25-year-old woman, Katrina Smyth, who police have confi rmed both knew the victim, were arrested at the hotel and taken to Penrith Police Station, to be later charged with hindering the investigation. Police continued to carry out investigations into the shooting, which led them to a property in Markham Street, Penrith, the following day.
“Local police assisted by specialist officers from the Tactical Operations Unit, executed a search warrant at a home in Markham Avenue at Penrith,” a police spokesperson said. “Police seized a fi rearm and other property from the location, which will now undergo further forensic examination.” A 28-year-old Hebersham man, Peter Petelo, was arrested at the property and was charged with allegedly discharging a fi rearm, intending to cause grevious bodily harm. In an interesting twist, the Markham Avenue property was the scene of a crime just over a month ago, when nearby residents alerted police to suspicious behaviour. A 33-year-old man from Mulgoa was allegedly observed loading a large number of television units into a truck at about 3.30pm on Monday, December 9. When police investigated the incident, the 14 televisions were found to be stolen and the 33-year-old was charged for receiving stolen goods; he was due to appear in Blacktown Court this week. The man with the gunshot wound is still recovering in hospital.
Court mention A man has faced Parramatta Local Court over the death of his ex-wife in Werrington last year. Man Haron Monis has been charged with being an accessory before and after the fact of murder. Monis’ partner has been charged with murder. The case returns to court in April.

he State Government is being urged to improve signage warning drivers of three red light/speed cameras in St Marys. Penrith Councillor and Labor candidate for Londonderry, Prue Car, says that local residents have raised concerns that the camera warning signs are inadequately located. Last week, NSW Shadow Roads Minister, Walt Secord visited the cameras with Cr Car and said that there is a case to improve the signage. “We support cameras as a way to reduce speed and make our roads safer, especially around schools, but not as a form of revenue-raising,” Mr Secord said. Mr Secord also released data from the Office of State Revenue showing that almost $693,000 was collected by three cameras in the St Marys area from January-November 2013. The new camera at the corner of Mamre Road and Saddington Street, St Marys which was installed in October has raised $104,947 in a mere two months. “The signage at Charles Hackett Drive and the Great Western Highway can be improved. There is a case to move them further down the street so that motorists can reduce their speed – which is what everyone wants. We want them to reduce their speed,” Cr Car said. A spokesperson from the Roads and Maritime Services said that the camera signage was inspected in November last year and found to be appropriately placed, with sign sizes recently doubled to improve visibility.

Peter Camilleri named Citizen of the Year after generous bushfire efforts truly generous citizen in the wake of the Blue Mountains bushfir es last year, as well as an international-level athlete driven by charity-work, were recognised at Penrith Council’s Australia Day Awards ceremony last night. Penrith’s Citizen of the Year was awarded to Peter Camilleri after he showed generosity beyond belief in the wake of the Blue Mountains fires. Mr Camilleri turned his business, Penrith Storage King, into a collection point for donated goods to help those who had lost their homes. The business also operated as a drop-off point for water and supplies for the Rural Fire Service and State Emergency Service. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said Mr Camilleri remained on call after hours throughout the fi res to assist those who needed help. “It is this generosity of spirit that has led to Mr Camilleri being awarded Penrith’s Citizen of the Year,” Cr Fowler said. “Mr Camilleri continued to run his own business during this period, while addressing the needs of those affected by fi re. He even donated storage space to fir e victims, so they could keep their sentimental items safe. It was an incredibly generous effort overall.” Bede Johnston was named Penrith’s Sports Person of the Year at the ceremony, held at the Civic Centre. Ayres backs plan Penrith MP Stuart Ayres has backed the State Government’s tough new rules that will be implemented in Sydney in an effor t to crack down on alcohol-fuelled violence. Parliament will be recalled next week to implement the new measures, which include new minimum sentences and pub lockouts, among other initiatives. “Like local residents, I have been horrified by the continued drug and alcohol-fuelled attacks on the State’s streets and the increase in violence,” Mr Ayres said. “The NSW Government is getting on with the job of making our streets safer. “The initiatives already implemented have seen a fall in violence on licenced premises, but more improvement is needed and that’s the basis of these measures.” Mr Ayres said there was no simple or single “cure-all” for the problems currently being experienced.

onstruction has commenced on a new roundabout on Maxwell Street at the intersection with Aspen Street in South Penrith. Penrith City Council submitted a proposal to the State Government in 2012 to upgrade the intersection after statistics gathered by the Roads and Maritime Services showed the intersection was a blackspot for accidents. There were 15 accidents at the intersection in a five year period to 2012, with eight of those resulting in casualties. “The new roundabout is an endorsed State Blackspot program that is jointly funded with Council. Council were successful through the Auslink Blackspot Program for this fi nancial year,” a Council spokesperson said. “The intersection met the Blackspot criteria due to accidents that have occurred there. The proposal is designed mainly to reduce vehicle crashes at the intersection.” The works being carried out include a one-lane roundabout, traffic calming measures, new line marking, lighting and signage. The intersection formerly included a turning lane on Maxwell Street to access the Pioneer Tavern and 7-Eleven petrol station, in very close proximity to the intersection with the Northern Road. 7-Eleven store manager, Sunny Chowdhry, said that once the roundabout is complete it will make the intersection much safer. “It is difficult for our customers at that

he dream of enhancing the outdoor learning space for children at the YMCA’s Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) at St Marys Public School has been made possible thanks to NSW Government funding. As part of the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnerships scheme, the centre has received $8,000 in funding which will cover the installation of shade sails, chairs and tables and an above ground ‘water tank’ garden bed. “The new outdoor learning area will give the children a great outdoor space to eat, learn and play,” said YMCA St Marys OSHC Centre Coordinator, Kylie Bouveng. “We are excited to be able to take the children out of the confi nes of a classroom and provide them with a space where they can be active regardless of the weather. “Th is funding support will make a big impact on our centre and the local community.” The centre was visited by State Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, on Monday, when the funding was confir med. “The YMCA St Marys OSHC provides a fantastic service and is an asset to the community,” she said. “The CBP program aims to provide improved community infrastructure for the people of NSW and encourage communitybased activities that create more vibrant and inclusive communities.” Do you have a great community story to share? Shock discovery: Cannabis found by Polair
Child porn found: 50-year-old man charged Police were patrolling Tench Avenue, Jamisontown at about 3.55am on Thursday, January 16, when they had cause to speak to a 50-year-old man sitting in his parked car. As police were speaking to the man, from Lithgow, they noticed a laptop in the car beside him. Upon inspection, police allege that the laptop contained child pornographic material. He has been charged for the offence and will appear in Blacktown Local Court on February 27. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

three-year-old boy has narrowly escaped serious injury thanks to his helmet, after a quad bike crash last weekend. The boy had been riding the vehicle beside family members when he crashed into a tree on Sunday, January 19, in Erskine Park. Ambulance paramedics contacted the CareFlight trauma team just before 4.30pm. The CareFlight helicopter landed in bushland off Pollux Close, near the accident site. According to those at the scene, the boy had been found initially semi-conscious after hitting the tree.
“If little Nate had not been wearing a riding helmet, he would have been far more seriously injured,” said CareFlight founding director, Ian Badham. “CareFlight urges parents to make sure their children always wear a riding helmet on any form of bike as it can save their life.” The boy was stabilised at the scene before being flown by CareFlight to the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. He remained in a stable condition on arrival at the hospital and was released at 11.25pm that evening. He will make a full recovery. “Th is family’s unfortunate accident shows the life-saving value of a riding helmet – an example for all parents,” Mr Badham said.
A unit block on Putland Street, St Marys, was evacuated last weekend when a fi re ripped through the building. Emergency services were called to the scene at about 8.50pm on Saturday and were informed that a woman was still in a top floor unit. The woman, believed to be in her 70’s was evacuated, along with around 12 other people from neighbouring units. The fi re was extinguished and a crime scene was established and examined. One woman was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. Police are still investigating to determine the cause of the fir e. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

A cannabis plantation with a street value of $70,000 has been located in local bushland. On Wednesday, January 15, at about 11.30am, officers attached to the Penrith Proactive Unit and Polair discovered the plants growing in thick bushland, on crown land, between The Lakes Scheme and the Nepean River, near Old Castlereagh Road. 35 cannabis plants and two animal traps were located and seized at the scene. Police are appealing for anyone with information about cars frequenting the area to come forward. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Nude shopping: Naked man nabbed in car park A man has been arrested by police after he was found walking around a local car park in the nude. At about 6pm on Sunday, January 19, the Glenmore Park man was seen by members of the public walking around a Penrith shopping centre car park naked. Security was alerted and chased the man, who hid. He was apprehended and charged with ‘willful and obscene behaviour in a public place’. He will appear in Blacktown Local Court on February 18.

Relieving boat congestion: New pontoons at Nepean River

wo new pontoons will be built at Tench Reserve on the Nepean River to accommodate growing demand for boat access. Penrith City Council has been allocated $82,000 by the State Government’s Better Boating Program to complete the upgrades, which will provide better opportunities for light watercraft such as kayaks to access the popular stretch of river. Penrith MP, Stuart Ayres, said that the State Government was glad to fund such an important infrastructure upgrade.
“I have always believed that the Nepean River belongs to the whole community so it is great to improve these boat ramps,” Mr Ayres said. Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler said that delivering the two new pontoons was part of Penrith Council’s masterplan for the Nepean River. “Th is funding fits in well with Council’s long term development plans for the Nepean River Precinct,” he said. “There have been congestion issues on the weekends during the warmer months as many people want to access the river and so these new pontoons will relieve the congestion.”
Police will be monitoring school zones from next week.

otorists are being reminded that come Tuesday, January 28, school zones will again be in force. Whilst not all children will start school on Tuesday, 40km/hr school zones will be enforced by police and flashing warning signs will be operational. In 2013, not all drivers paid attention to the school zone rules though. The speed camera on The Northern Road raised $1.18 million due to people speeding outside of St Dominic’s College.
Highway Patrol Senior Constable Glen Gribble said that police will be patrolling all school zones from next week to ensure the safety of students. “Commonly, we are looking for offences such as stopping in no stopping zones, bus zones and no parking zones,” he said. “There is no tolerance for breaking the road rules. There is a strict 40km/hr cap in school zones and if you are detected of an offence you will be given a ticket.” For stopping in a bus zone, drivers face a $304 fi ne and three points. “People don’t always realise there are demerit points attached to offences such as stopping in a no-stopping zone,” he said.

Let the public decide
Australia Day Australia Day has become one of our country’s biggest days of celebration. In Penrith, Australia Day at the Lakes is the perfect place for family and friends to celebrate what’s great about our country. We are extremely proud of our free annual event and appreciate our sponsors who help make this possible. From humble beginnings, it has evolved into an important regional celebration which includes live musical entertainment, shows for the kids and a fi reworks fi nale. Held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, this unique celebration offers something for everyone. On Sunday we will also hold a citizenship ceremony at Penrith City Council to welcome new Australians to our City. More than 800 people receive their citizenship in Penrith each year. Some have been in Australia for 50 years, others have arrived quite recently. Australia’s heritage is made richer by contributions from people from all continents. To all new and long-time residents, enjoy our Australia Day party.
Yes there should be a vote for Mayor and anyone should have the right to run for Mayor (Put Mayor to vote, report says, Western Weekender January 17). Other cities do it, why not Penrith. Tony Robinson, via Facebook . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
We should get a vote
Although I do support Ross and think that he does an exceptional job as Mayor of our city, I do think that we should vote to elect and as for his comment that the Mayor may not have the support of the councillors, well, if they don’t like who the people elect then they should resign, SIMPLE! It’s not a popularity contest within the council wards. Nathan Brookfield, via Facebook . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
UWS bans smoking
Being a UWS student and a former student representative at UWS, the decision was made back in 2012 that the university would go smoke-free, with 2013 having smoking areas (Uni goes smoke free, Western Weekender January 17). As of 1 January, the whole university went smoke-free and those smoking areas were moved as the second part of summer school began on January 6. Being a student and a non-smoker, I have always supported this idea, so it is the right move. People go to university to study, not to be made sick by smoke. I think people can wait a couple
email : news@westernweekender.com.au post : Suite 2, 42-44 Abel Street, Jamisontown 2750.
of hours to have a smoke, and focus on their studies as I have seen people coming out of lectures or tutorials half way through just to go have a smoke. Leam Mark Farrar, via Facebook . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Hard to police
Very hard to police non-smoking policy. I was at Penrith Station recently when passengers were advised that smoking on station premises was not allowed and fine s would apply. Yet some people continued smoking with impunity. Terence Bright, via Facebook . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Loyalty from Taylor
Good to hear that Elijah Taylor is sticking with his new club and staying loyal to Panthers after he signed the contract with us (Elijah’s biggest test, Western Weekender January 17). We are proud of Elijah Taylor for sticking with Panthers and not backing out to return to the Warriors as he wants to play under Ivan Cleary at Penrith, which is a good sign as he wants to be part of the future of our Penrith team. Catherine Pirotta, via Facebook . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Let’s stop apologising
Troy’s most recent column is 100 per cent correct (From The Editor’s Desk, Western Weekender January 17) from the perspective that we need to stop apologising when nobody has really
complained other than a few people on Twitter. I don’t agree that the shirt wasn’t offensive – it just wasn’t in the best taste if you ask me – but I will make a personal decision not to buy it and move on. We need to stop being so over-protective and grow up. Barry Nolan, St Marys . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Questionable tactics
With the median house price in Glenbrook up 17 per cent in 12 months, it is no wonder new real estate offices are entering the Glenbrook market, attracted to rent seeking behaviour. For new offic es in Glenbrook it is easy to sell crack to addicts when the market is booming but I quickly found out the drugs are only offered to some. As a willing buyer I was not given the opportunity to put in an offer. I feel sorry for the recent seller. I would have offered $100,000 more than the listing price. I was simply called, told the inspection was cancelled and that the property was sold. Agents are obliged to maximise price for the seller, rather than the lure of the quick commission. Agents do not dictate price, the behaviour of the buyers does. It is a shame that in the current Tulipmania state of the market, the behaviour by some real estate agents is disrespectful and poor. Once the market correction comes, new real estate offic es will simply be operating at marginal cost, struggling for survival. Rodney Forrest, Penrith

Relief for families: Quarterly Child Care Rebate payments hit bank accounts
Q
CASSANDRA O CONNOR
local news
uarterly Child Care Rebate payments have started to hit the bank accounts of nearly 285,000 eligible parents this week. Minister for Human Services, Senator Marise Payne, said payments covering September to December 2013 will be made automatically to eligible families over the next fortnight. “Families who have chosen to receive their Child Care Rebate payments quarterly don’t need to do anything to receive this payment,” Ms Payne said. “If families have not received it by January 31, 2014 they can use Centrelink Online Services to check whether their payment has been issued. “They can even use the Express Plus Families app to view their Child Care payments – without visiting an offic e or waiting to speak to someone on the phone.” The app can be downloaded for both Apple and Android phones, and helps families better manage their services. “The app also means busy families can take care of a range of other Centrelink business at a time and place convenient to them – from updating contact details to viewing payment history,” Ms Payne said. Minister Payne said it is important to support working families as well as those studying and training, by assisting with the cost of child care. “The Child Care Rebate covers 50 per cent of out-of-pocket child care expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per child per year to help families out with the cost of child care,”
Minister for Human Services, Senator Marise Payne.
she said. “Many families work to a tight budget so there is also an option of receiving their Child Care Rebate fortnightly or weekly.
“We want to ensure those people working to improve the quality of their families’ lives have the assistance they need to meet their goals.”

Is pool program heading for a bellyflop?
local news
COUNCIL SNAPSHOT Penrith Lakes Development Corporation has fi led a second development application for the creation of residential land, this time on Church Lane. A separate application has already been received for residential lots off Sardam Avenue and Farrells Lane in Cranebrook. Th is latest proposal is for nine blocks of land with access via Church Lane. The sites provide flood plain type topography at the southern end before rising up a steep escarpment and then levelling out on the northern sections of the site.
CASSANDRA O CONNOR
P
enrith Council has received an underwhelming number of applications for swimming pool compliance certific ates despite mandatory pool inspections commencing in just a few months. Last year, the State Government legislated that Councils conduct inspections of backyard pools to lift safety standards and created an online register for all pools in NSW. “Since the introduction of the NSW pool registration program, Penrith City Council has been made aware of approximately 11,300 pools that have been registered in the LGA. Th is number has been one of the highest recorded in the state so far for an LGA,” a Penrith Council spokesperson said. There could be even more pools though, as Council has been “unable to analyse” data from registrations after the pool register deadline of October 29, 2013. The deadline had to be extended by the State Government, after 45,000 people tried to register their pool in the last 24 hours, causing the website to crash. Councils have been ordered to implement local pool inspection programs, aided by the data from the online pool register. “Currently, Penrith City Council is only inspecting swimming pools in response to a complaint regarding non-compliance. Inspections are also being undertaken in response to swimming pool compliance certificate requests from home owners,” the Penrith Council spokesperson said. However, only 11 applications for swimming pool compliance certificates have been received, just 0.097 per cent of all Penrith Local Government Area pools, since October 29, 2013. Only 21 complaints regarding swimming pool safety have been received in the same period.
Development at Thornton in North Penrith continues, with Penrith Council receiving an application to build nine multi-unit attached dwellings on new road, Stratton Lane. Worth approximately $2,700,000, the units will each have two car park spaces, be two storeys and have courtyards. Down the road, on Burrows Street, a similar housing project for three attached dwellings and a studio loft is being proposed for $950,000. Council has given St Marys Rugby League Club approval for the construction of a new BBQ enclosure in the vicinity of the St Marys Rugby League oval and associated grandstand. Council has also approved alterations and additions to the existing ticket office in order to create new office space for the Rugby League Operations administration, which is currently located on the southern side of Boronia Road. Th is means that all league operations will be in closer proximity to the actual training facilities. Penrith Anglican College on Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills, has applied to increase its number of student enrolments. There are currently 1,300 students, however, the school hopes to take on 1,550 students. No additional car parking or buildings would be required.
Valentines Day
A swimming pool safety program is being doubted.
The response is worrying given that on April 29, 2014, it becomes mandatory for all properties on the market or rented out, to have a valid compliance certific ate. “We are continuing to work to spread the word about these important new State requirements for pool owners in a range of ways,” the Council spokesperson said.

Cranebrook’s shopping revival

New centre, new shops: $14 million redevelopment will benefit the community fter many years of waiting, Cranebrook Shopping Village will fi nally be redeveloped. Penrith City Council, who owned the site, have gone through a detailed tender and design review process and have selected Cranebrook Village Pty Ltd to undertake the $14 million project. The aim of the extensive redevelopment is to re-invent the existing ‘tired’ shopping centre through a complete overhaul, including construction of a new Cranebrook Village Shopping Centre. There will be two supermarkets, one of which will be an Aldi, a number of specialty stores as well as a new village green leading down to facilities like the community centre and childcare. Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler said the project would have a positive effect on the Cranebrook community. “Council is looking forward to the fi nished development,” Cr Fowler said. “The history of the centre is that Council took a risk to develop the site many years ago when the population wasn’t there, as it did with Glenmore Park. It is now time for Council to opt out.” It is proposed that the works will be completed in two stages, with the fi rst stage including the demolition of the church building to the west of the existing shops, 214 new car park spaces and construction of a new supermarket on the existing car park. Stage two would include demolition of the existing shops to make way for a new supermarket, specialty retail and additional

parking spaces. Craig Field, owner of Top Drops Cranebrook, says his store has been based at Cranebrook shops for 25 years and would like to continue his local business in the
new shopping centre. “As one of the largest independent liquor retailers left in western Sydney we would very much like to secure a site in the new centre,” he said.
“It is important that independent specialty stores that have strong ties to the local area are maintained and that competition is supported.” The plan is now on exhibition.

espite the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, strokes and cancer in later life, most people in the local area are not prepared for the future. Latest research shows that only four per cent of Australian adults in Sydney have a clear understanding of the three preplanning documents that should be fil led out and an overwhelming majority haven’t discussed their wishes for the future if they were to pass away, with family members. A new Australian-fi rst NSW Government campaign, ‘Get it in black and white’, encourages people to seek the right information, have these conversations now and take control of their own plans for later life while they still can. NSW Trustee and Guardian CEO,
Imelda Dodds said that if left too late, people will be forced to guess their loved ones’ fi nancial, health and lifestyle needs and wishes. “Th is is often the last thing people need at a time that is already likely to be stressful and overwhelming,” Ms Dodds said. “Similarly if you don’t have a Will, your estate will be intestate and the Succession Act 2006 will determine who receives your estate and your loved ones may not inherit.” A Will, Power of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship are among the documents that the ‘Get it in black and white’ campaign encourages the public to get on top of. For those wanting to seek information and take action, visit www. planningaheadtools.com.au, which is an online resource providing simple and straightforward information about how and why people should get planning now.

Nominations closing soon for St Marys Police Officer of the Year awards
local news
L
KATHERINE TWEED
ocals planning on nominating a police officer for the 2013 St Marys Police Officer of the Year awards are quickly running out of time. Nominations for the annual moraleboosting awards will close on Monday, February 17, leaving under a month for members of the public to recognise an officer who has helped them out over the past year. “It would be great if every person who has had help from the police in the past year would nominate an officer for the award,” said Chris Miller of the St Marys Rotary Club, which organises the awards night. “Police officers work hard in the community without much recognition, they often do a lot in the background.” The awards, run by Rotary, recognise individual officers for their hard work, dedication to the job and compassion shown to those who are in need. St Marys police can also nominate their colleagues for a peer award. The officers are publicly recognised at an award ceremony, to be held on Wednesday, April 2, where they share stories of their work in the field. “Th is is the fi fth year that St Marys has had a Police Officer of the Year award – they look forward to the night more and more each year,” Mr Miller said. Nomination forms can be picked up from St Marys Police Station or downloaded from either the NSW Police or St Marys Rotary Club websites. The Weekender is a proud sponsor of the event.
Last year’s winners Senior Constable Andrew Collins and Sergeant Gary Salafia with Rotary members.

eeping up with technology can be a challenge for local seniors, especially as it evolves so quickly. Mobile phones, televisions and computers are becoming so advanced that some seniors choose not to keep up, but according to the team at Penrith Valley Seniors Computing Club, there are many benefits to learning how to use a computer and all its functions.
“To learn to use a computer is to be able to keep in touch with friends and family,” said secretary, Lorraine Brown. “It is a great form of keeping in contact more quickly and is less expensive than using a landline. You don’t even have to worry about time zones if you have family overseas because when they wake up in the morning they can read your email.” In addition to using the computer for communication, through email and Skype, the local club teaches other basic skills like Photoshop, card making, movie making
and how to use the Internet. For those who already have the basic skills, an advanced class is also available. “The main benefit [of joining the club] is that you have the chance to learn from people who have all been beginners previously. The volunteer tutors are understanding and are very patient,” Mrs Brown said. The club is holding an open day on Friday, January 31, from 10am at the Penrith Seniors Centre, 86 Station Street, Penrith. Classes commence February 3.
The temperature soared over 40 degrees in Penrith last Saturday and Penrith Council is turning to social media to help people through the hot months. Council is promoting useful information for residents on social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook, as well as using traditional media such as newspapers and local radio. “It is about helping make our residents more resilient during emergency events, and focus on as well as prepare for and deal with events such as storms, fi re and flood,” Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler said. For more information, logon to Council’s website at www.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au or follow them on Twitter or Facebook.

Applications for the fi rst round of SITA’s inaugural Community Grant Program close soon. Applications for monetary grants of between $500 and $5,000 each close on Friday, January 31. Grants are available to support a wide range of community organisations, committed to increasing participation in social and environmental projects. SITA Managing Director, Eric Gernath said the Community Grant Program is a fantastic opportunity for local organisations to receive fi nancial assistance to continue the positive impact they make in their local communities. “We are aware of the important role grass roots organisations play in contributing to the sustainability of local communities and we look forward to contributing to these organisations,” he said. verweight kids living in the local area are becoming fitter, happier and healthier with a free healthy lifestyle program, which is now taking enrolments for 2014. Go4Fun is a 10-week program that has been running during school terms in Penrith since 2011, for children aged seven to 13 who are above their healthy weight range. Kids take part in a number of fun activities one or two afternoons a week as they learn about fitness and nutrition. “It is a fun, practical way for kids to learn about having a healthy lifestyle,
said Nepean Hospital Health Promotion Officer, Ada Kwan. “We fi nd that at this age group children are very open to learning new things. The y are willing to take on change and want to try to make their own decisions. Cranebrook mum, Leonie Grieco saw a big change in her daughter, Anika after she completed the program last year. “After the program Anika was a lot happier. Her self esteem grew quite a bit and she was much happier with herself, she said. Term one begins in early February and registrations are now open. t Tails in Training, teaching your dog manners is all about strengthening the human-canine bond to make your pet the best that they can be. Tails in Training is a positive, rewardbased training school for dogs, located at Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic. The new school, which opened only this year, has classes available for all kinds of dogs; great and small, young and old, shy and outgoing. “The furry friends that we work with are as important to us as they are to their
owners. By working together with our clients and their pets in a positive environment, we achieve only the best results,” said co-director, Kylie. Puppy pre-school is a great place to begin with Tails in Training, to build up a strong bond between pet and owner, whilst teaching your pup the manners they will need as they grow up. Continue on from puppy pre-school by joining an adulthood class, which are for both adolescents or older dogs. “It is always good to follow up with additional lessons after puppy pre-school,
especially with adolescents. It helps to keep bad habits at bay and remember, a dog is never too old to learn new tricks,” Kylie said. In addition to puppy pre-school and adulthood classes, the school offers one-on-one lessons and specific behavioural modification programs. “We work very closely with Coreen Avenue Veterinary Clinic, which has two vets who have completed specific animal behavioural training courses, and one who is completing her membership in behaviour as we speak,” Kylie said. Both trainers, Kylie and Leigh, are fully
trained animal behaviour trainers with over 20 years of experience in training as well as animal care, with Kylie practicing as a veterinary nurse. “We want to see you develop a trusting and loving relationship with your pet – we are qualified to help you do this and would love to meet you and your furry friend,” Kylie said. Courses run all year long and the school also offers a number of courses for cats and their owners as well. For more information, contact the team on info@tailsintraining.com.au.

Doing it all
M
any of you will have seen the movie ‘I Don’t Know How She Does It’. And if you are anything like me, many of the situations that Sarah-Jessica Parker’s character, Kate, found herself in, will have rung true. Although men can be just as guilty of over-committing, women seem to have a strangle-hold on feeling like they have to ‘do it all’. Like so many working mothers, Kate makes lists to try and keep track of her busy life, including fundamentals such as ‘keeping her head above water at work’ and ‘making her marriage work’. But as Kate discovers, trying to ‘do it all’ means that someone or something always loses out, and in the long run, your business won’t achieve the success you desire. To advance your business, you must focus on strategy not tasks. And this means you have to bite the bullet and outsource as many areas as possible. Most of us are not accountants, or even particularly good at book-keeping. But so many business owners hold on to this task, despite the fact that it takes you three times as long as a professional (and you probably do a mediocre job of it). Outsource it! Find a good IT consultant who can set up your systems in the most effective manner to suit your business. Someone who you can call on to troubleshoot issues, rather than you spending five hours trying to retrieve that document you deleted by mistake. Doing this will save you time, allow you and your team to focus on core areas, and add to the quality of your business by bringing in expertise in a cost effective manner.

Marketing
L
ast year really changed the way we market businesses. Marketing plans have evolved, we now have to fi nd that balance between traditional methods and more contemporary methods such as social media and search engine optimisation. Success is now even measured via social shares, YouTube views and online conversion. Here are some digital marketing trends for 2014: 1. Social media marketing will continue to hit new heights. People and businesses will adopt a smarter approach to how they use a variety of platforms. 2. Content is still king. Custom, targeted content should be your focus. Customers will be more selective about which content they read i.e. where they get their news, what websites appeal more than others. There is a large amount of information hitting people every day, so make sure you only communicate vital, relevant material to your target market. 3. Social reviews will become key factors in customer decision making. Word of mouth is a key influence in buying decisions. 4. Mobile engagement will continue to rise. Mobile searching will exceed over 27 billion queries by 2016 globally. 26 per cent of Australians have made a purchase on their smartphones. Keep this in mind. 5. With the massive growth of Instagram and Vine, we are now seeing people reading less and watching more. Visual media will continue to grow. 6. Location marketing will come more into plans. Knowing where your customers are will help you.

Work centres ne of the major benefits in the growth and evolution of communication technologies such as mobile devices and wireless and cloud computing is that workers particularly in the knowledge sectors can basically work from anywhere and do not necessarily have to turn up for work as we know it. Given such flexibility, it is now possible to explore alternate work environments in addition to giving the opportunity for people to work from home. One such alternative is smart work centres which provide shared work spaces located in proximity to where workers live. PBA has supported a study by the Institute for Sustainable Futures at UTS, which has looked at the potential for Smart Work Centres in Penrith, Blacktown and Liverpool. Last week I was outlined the NSW State government’s industry priorities which included funding for pilot smart work hubs in western Sydney. PBA is working with Council and UWS, which has a keen interest in multiple smart work hubs in the region to provide an expression of interest to Government for a western Sydney pilot. According to the Study by UTS the ideal location for smart work centres is close to a residential population of professionals, managers and clerical and administrative workers who suffer long commutes to their place of employment. According to 2011 statistics Penrith had 8,200 managers, 10,900 professionals and some 15,000 clerical and administrative workers and based on these numbers there is a potential demand of some 1076 workers in Penrith who would be keen to tele-work on any given day.

eniors attending the University of the Thi rd Age (U3A) Nepean in 2014 can look forward to learning in renovated facilities, following the acquisition of $6,900 in
funding. The funds, secured as part of the NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership Program, have been used to purchase and install brand new wooden flooring for the hall at the Penrith School of the Arts building, where the U3A is based. It is a huge improvement for those who attend classes and will make a big difference moving forward. “Before it was simply chipboard, it was reasonably ugly and not very inspiring. [The new floor] really lifts the room – it has so many qualities
that are wonderful,” said U3A Nepean Blue Mountains President, Jim Tiberi. Mr Tiberi said funds are hard to come by, making the State Government’s contribution particularly exciting and welcomed. “We don’t get much money from membership so whatever we do, we rely on grants from the Government and they’ve been very good to us,” he said. The U3A is an entirely volunteer based organisation, where the retired and semi-retired in the community can try their hand at skills they didn’t have the time to learn before. With over 100 courses and 80 volunteer tutors, there is something for everyone. “Some of these senior people in the area don’t have a reason to get out of bed,” Mr Tiberi said.

“Th is gives them a reason.” State Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres, joined Mr Tiberi to inspect the new floor last week and was full of praise for the organisation. “U3A is a fantastic organisation in our local community,” he said. “They do an extensive amount of work ensuring that the seniors in our community continue to live a fulfi lling and active life.” Mr Ayres said he has been aware of the work of U3A for some time and has always been impressed. “As the local member here, I have been a long term supporter of the work that U3A do and even support their art shows – I bought a fantastic photograph at their most recent art show,” he said. Manage your spare time in retirement etirement is all about having the time to do what you love. It’s an open-ended time of your life and it can be whatever you want it to be, whether that’s spending time with family and friends, fi nding new hobbies or going back to work in a job you’re passionate about. Quality of life is not affected as much by the amount of free time that a retiree has, but by how effectively the person manages this time. By managing what you do in your free time, you could have a happier, more active and healthier retirement. Recent research has shown that effective management of free time has a greater impact on a retiree’s quality of life than the amount of time the person actually has for leisure activities. Lack of planning can create problems such as boredom and an unhealthy, sedentary lifestyle. Going from a busy lifestyle to a more relaxed one in retirement is often a very big change that requires some getting used to. Nobody teaches you how to manage all of that spare time to make the most of life in retirement. So, here are just five recommendations to help you get the most out of the available ‘free’ hours in the day: 1. Set goals – both long and short-term. Take the time to decide what you want to accomplish, and go after it. Defi ne what’s most important to you
to help you take charge of your time. What activities and roles give your life meaning? These are the aspects of your life that you’ll want to focus on the most. 2. Guard your free time from unnecessary stressors. If you want your free time to be truly useful, don’t allow non-free time things to cut into it. The reason for this is that your free time is needed to refresh you and improve your energy, your creativity, and your sense of self. 3. Expand your comfort zone. A great way to use free time usefully is to discover new things. By stepping beyond your usual comfort zone, your free time becomes a journey of self-discovery and helps you to grow. 4. Volunteer. If you’ve already volunteered, you’ll be aware of the benefits it can bring. If you have enough free time to give your time to others in need, this can be a very fulfi lling way to give back to your community or society. 5. Consider downsizing and reorienting your lifestyle. If you fi nd your free time has been hampered by having to deal with a large house and all its maintenance and cleaning, gain more free time by removing the clutter and even consider purchasing a smaller residence. For more information, contact your local community centre.

eniors are the unsung heroes in our community, often volunteering behind the scenes to make Penrith a better place. Th is Seniors Week, March 15 to March 23, the over 55’s in our community can be recognised for the good they do in the area but for this, they need to be nominated. Nominations are now open for the 2014 NSW Seniors Week Local Achievement awards, through local Member of Parliament, Stuart Ayres. “There’s a real opportunity for people
right throughout our community to recognise the valuable contribution seniors make to our local community,” he said. “These awards are one way in which we can show our appreciation for the talents, skills and generosity of this impressive group.” Nominations are handed to and processed by Mr Ayres before a celebratory award ceremony to be held in the local area during the week. “I believe it is important to give thanks where it is due and these awards are Penrith’s way of showing its appreciation for these exceptional seniors,” he said. Nominations close on February 28.

hen it comes to planning a holiday, many seniors feel the pinch in the pocket. But the NSW Government’s Sport and Recreation department has the solution. Sport and Recreation run seniors camps throughout the year so that older adults can try a range of great activities that they normally wouldn’t do. “Safety is a top priority for Sport and Recreation Centres and something we pride ourselves on. All staff are fully qualified to instruct activities and
provide fi rst aid and there is always someone available to provide support,” a government spokesperson said. “Escape on a holiday that won’t break the budget. Whether it be a beach holiday, bayside retreat or country escape – we have getaway destinations to suit all tastes.” Menus and activities can be tailored to suit cultural, dietary and medical needs. One for the diary is Active Life Weekend from March 14 to 16. In a relaxed atmosphere at Lake Burrendong, four hours from Sydney, decide your own level of involvement, with a variety of day and evening activities on offer. or Werrington twins, Kaylani and Kayla Amituanai, making the transition from pre-school to kindergarton next week will be an enormous challenge. At two-years of age, the girls were both diagnosed with autism and have been under special care at Wattle Glenn Childcare Centre, but this year, as they approach their fi fth birthday, the girls will start ‘big school’. Change is something Kaylani and Kayla do not fi nd easy, especially a change as big as this one, but mum, Kristina Stojanovska, 28, is confident that they can do it. “Deciding to send them off to kindy was really hard at fi rst. I wasn’t sure that they were ready for it but now I think it is best for them,” she said. “They are still my babies. I am so attached, I don’t
want to let them go.” The twins will begin this new stage of their lives at Kurrambee School, Werrington, on Friday, January 31, three days a week, with the other two days spent at Wattle Glenn. Once settled, it is hoped that the girls can learn full-time at Kurrambee. Ms Stojanovska has already seen her eldest, who is now in Year Two, through the transition from preschool to kindergarton but knows that the start of this term will be another kind of challenge for her, as well as for the twins. “It is going to be really different for me because of their special needs. It won’t be the same as with my eldest,” she said. “It will be a difficult change for them.” - Katherine Tweed

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20
The New Moon urges you to find fresh ways to connect with those around you, as you contribute your considerable talents to a group, club or organisation. And don’t worry if your spontaneous approach results in mistakes along the way. Your motto for the moment is from French writer Colette; “You will do foolish things, but do them with enthusiasm.”
LEO
JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23
Mae West, Mick Jagger, Madonna, Robert Redford, Whitney Houston, Robert de Niro, Jennifer Lopez… why are so many major entertainers also Leos? Because they relish being the centre of attention. With the New Moon revving up your relationship zone, the challenge is to share the spotlight with someone else, whether it’s a partner or friend.
SAGITTARIUS
NOVEMBER 23 TO DECEMBER 21
Sagittarius is a fiery sign of extremes, big bold moves and extravagant gestures. And Jupiter (your ruling planet) opposes Pluto on Friday, which will increase your tendency to overdo just about everything, especially spending. You’re also inclined to jump to hasty conclusions about other people but before you judge others take a close and considered look at yourself and think about whether you are being harsh.

CAPRICORN
DECEMBER 22 TO JANUARY 20
Show me the money! With the New Moon in your cash zone, it’s time to take stock of your fina ncial situation and initiate some smart new strategies. Abundance is all around – you just have to tap into it. Don’t forget to do an inventory of your inner wealth, which includes your self-esteem and core values. Remember – you are more than your job, what you earn or what you own.
GEMINI
MAY 22 TO JUNE 21
You’re super busy but are you actually achieving anything? If you tackle tasks in short, sharp bursts, you’ll gradually get things done. The New Moon stimulates your brain power so it’s the perfect time to study, read, research and investigate. You’re also keen to speak up about work issues as you express yourself eloquently, and colleagues are keen to hear what you’ve got to say.
LIBRA
SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23
It’s time to connect with your inner child as you tap into the stores of creativity within. There could be some confl ict between your professional and personal lives, as Jupiter and Pluto highlight your struggle to achieve some balance. With Venus powering forwards in your domestic zone on Sunday, make your home a cocoon of calm, away from the hustle and bustle of the busy world.
AQUARIUS
JANUARY 21 TO FEBRUARY 19
Th is week Aquarians are twice as much fun and twice as much trouble. You’re adventurous and are keen to re-model an important area of your life. But you’re also feeling restless, reckless and rebellious as you shake loved ones out of their comfort zones. Be inspired by birthday great Vanessa Redgrave; “Ask the right questions if you’re to fi nd the right answers.”
CANCER
JUNE 22 TO JULY 22
Crabs are sentimental creatures and can spend too much time in the past. Resist the temptation to brood and stew over love gone wrong. Thi s week’s stars will help heal your hurt feelings so you can fi nally let go and move on. The New Moon signals a major shift in the areas of sex or money. Perhaps a passionate new relationship or the start of an exciting fi nancial partnership?
SCORPIO
OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22
Pluto opposes Jupiter on Friday, which increases your ambitious streak… and your domineering side. Strive to be persuasive rather than forceful. And perhaps it’s time to boost your own performance, before you start telling everyone else what they should be doing! It’s a great week for a domestic clean-up and de-clutter as the New Moon highlights your home zone.
PISCES
FEBRUARY 20 TO MARCH 20
Procrastinating Pisceans are the masters of avoidance – never more so than this week, when the New Moon energises your ‘escaping’ zone. If you have a problem that needs to be faced or a decision that needs to be made by all means spend time pondering and contemplating… closely followed by decisive action. The weekend is wonderful for group activities and creative pursuits.

FITEC FITNESS CHAMPION
51
Brought to you by
Fitec is the Fitness Industry Training & Education Centre. It’s where the trainers get their training! As part of raising awareness and promoting it in our community, we present the Fitec Fitness Champion! Each week we will interview someone who has successfully made health and fitness an integral part of their life...
Getting hooked on fitness Top three tips for good health? 1. Buy organic if possible and stick to your poultry, meat, fish, veggies, fruit and nuts. 2. Have an exercise plan to follow and stick to it. 3. Drink 1L of water per 25kg of bodyweight per day. A daily ‘must do’? You need to know what food is in your kitchen, and plan your meals for the following days. “Failing to prepare, is preparing to fail.” Biggest health/fitness misconception? Lifting weights will make women bulky. It’s a fact that you need testosterone, and a BIG diet tailored for growth to achieve that big, bulky look, which most men struggle with, let alone women not having either of these. All of my female clients are lifting weights and are achieving a fantastic physique. What do you consider the biggest benefit of being fit and healthy? Where do I begin? There are literally hundreds of health benefits. Personally it has to be the improved mental clarity.
You think clearer, you’re more focused, you’re positive with life, your self-esteem grows and life just seems a little easier. The structure and discipline you learn from being healthy carries into other aspects of your life and onto your friends and family.
life & style
How did you get into fitness? As a young boy I grew up playing outside and was involved in all sports... soccer, cricket, rugby league, touch football until I turned 17. Sport wasn’t the scene anymore; girls and parties seemed to take over my life. By the time I reached 21, I was unfit, out of shape and feeling depressed. I decided to start training at the gym; I thought this could be my new sport and hobby. After a week I was infatuated with it. I became hungry and desperate to learn as much as I could. It wasn’t long until I had friends asking me for advice on their own goals. Unhappy with my career path, I decided to make the change to become a Personal Trainer. Since then I have acquired my Elite Nutrition Coach and Elite Strength Coach certificate along with additional strength and conditioning courses lined up for 2014. I have helped many people lose in excess of 20-30kg. My goal is to meet someone who needs to lose 50kg but I’m yet to meet that person. There is no better feeling than seeing a person smile and say thank you.
What type of activity/exercise do you enjoy the most? I prefer weight lifting and bodybuilding. I love getting stronger and pushing myself, but with all things, it needs to be balanced, so I also do cardio circuits. How do you stay motivated when it’s so easy to just ‘take it easy’. The fi rst month is the hardest; you work hard but don’t see any result. Once you see the changes I was hooked. You can always improve. Your thoughts? Email news@ westernweekender.com.au.

Starting your journey
life & style
H
ave you ever thought of getting help with your health? Maybe you wanted to hire a trainer but thought you’re too unfit to start? Well if you are sick do you wait until you’re better before you go to the doctor? What about quickly change your oil before you take the car in for a service? We don’t want the mechanic seeing how dirty our old oil is! Starting your training journey is daunting. It’s very hard for an overweight, unfit person to walk into a gym or see a trainer for the fi rst time. I don’t just mean hard to get up the steps but the willpower to stick to the decision and go right outside their comfort zone. It makes people feel quite vulnerable. The trainer is most likely quite fit and healthy themselves, so people think trainers must be looking at their new client judging them or quietly saying, how could you let yourself go this much and be so lazy! It’s funny but it’s assumed everybody knows how to keep fit and anyone who doesn’t is just lazy. We all own a body so must know how to look after it... right? Th is isn’t true. I train people to become trainers and I know how much is involved in making someone good at it. To assume everybody should just know how to do it is ridiculous. A trainer is in the trade of getting people fit. The ‘product’ they make is fit, healthy people. Any trainer worth more than $1.50 an hour knows how people feel when coming in the fi rst time. They are professionals, assessing where a new client is and where they want to be and then designing a way to get them there. They’re not thinking ‘Ha ha you’re fat and I’m not’. They have chosen to follow a career path that revolves around helping others improve their results too. It is a service industry. Skill level as a trainer is judged by what they can do for a client. It’s entirely normal to feel a little trepidation starting out, but give it a while and see if that doesn’t turn into excitement as you start feeling and seeing all the great results from your effor ts.

Quitting smoking
Microchipping
ast week I wrote about quitting smoking. I focused on nicotine replacement therapy in the form of patches applied to the skin. Thi s week I will explain the use of other nicotine replacement products. These include chewing gum, lozenge, inhaler or mouth spray. Compared to patches, these products give you a fast hit of nicotine so they can really help with cravings. The gum, lozenge, inhaler and mouth spray all provide nicotine quickly to your blood, just like smoking. After around one minute you will absorb the nicotine and this will help to relieve cravings. It is important to realise that the chewing gum is NOT chewed continually like regular chewing gum. Each time you bite into nicotine gum, you release nicotine. Therefore, you may chew the gum a couple of times and then “park” the gum between the teeth and your cheek. A piece of gum has active nicotine being released for about 30 minutes. The lozenges are like a lolly and you suck them until they dissolve completely. The inhalers are a great option as they mimic the action of smoking and give you the experience of absorbing nicotine through your mouth. The new QuickMist mouth spray gives a “shot” of nicotine with each spray. Normally only one or two sprays are required every 30 to 60 minutes. Th is is very convenient because it is so quick. Also, you spray onto the inside of your cheek or under your tongue; therefore you should not taste the spray. The above products can be used on their own or in combination with patches. “Combination Therapy” is very effective because the patches remove the majority of cravings. Finally, never forget that most people will take six or seven attempts to quit completely.
t 66 per cent, Australia boasts one of the highest incidences of pet ownership in the world, most of them much loved family members. Every month, hundreds of family pets go missing. People move house, fi reworks and thunderstorms frighten them and they run away or gates can be accidently left open. Pets then become anxious, lost and confused. They have even been known to stow away in the back of a truck and end up half way across the country. All too often these lost pets never fi nd their families again, ending up at the local council pounds or injured in veterinary hospitals. Thankfully, the pets whose owners had the foresight to have them microchipped and registered, are very quickly reunited with their families. Implanting a microchip should be one of the fi rst things you do when you bring a new pet into your home. A microchip is a permanent method of electronic identification. The chip itself is very small – about the size of a grain of rice – and is implanted just under the skin, between the shoulder blades at the back of your pet’s neck. Each chip has a unique number that is detected using a microchip scanner. The microchip number is recorded on the Companion Animal Registry (CAR) with details about the animal and owner. Should your pet stray or become lost, vets, animal shelters and local councils can scan your pet for a microchip and contact you via the database. It is very important to keep contact details up to date on the database so that if you move house or change your phone number you will still be contactable in the event of your pet becoming lost. If a pet is transferred to a new owner, the new owner must ensure their contact details are recorded on the database. Put simply, if every animal owner had their pets microchipped and also kept their registry details up to date when they moved house (or changed ownership) we might never again see a stray dog or cat have to be impounded.

Bad hair day? Bad hair life? Do something about it!

that I was very wrong. Her partner comes from a long line of men who lose their hair young and in his 20’s he is already watching it become thinner by the day. Losing confidence and feeling worried about his future appearance, he shaved it all off. After seeing himself with no hair, and deciding it looked okay, the prospect of losing his hair early was not as daunting – the confidence came back! It just goes to show that, whether you realise it or not, so much of your confidence is determined by whether or not you are happy with your hair. ome people get confidence from their achievements, some their shoes, but have you noticed how much confidence you get from your hair? Everyone knows what a bad hair day feels like. From the moment you wake up to the moment you fall into bed, nothing seems to go right and everything that goes wrong seems worse. You don’t want to step out of the house, you can’t face that important meeting and that dinner date you have planned – you’d better cancel. Sometimes I change my plans on a bad hair day without even realising why I am doing it, but it’s all because I am not confident when my hair isn’t looking good. I still remember the day that I got my fi rst straightener – it changed my life. It was during high school, about Year 8 I think, when most girls are struggling with their self esteem. My hair wasn’t straight and it wasn’t curly, it was sort-of poofy – basically, I hated going out and school ‘sucked’ every day. I was given a straightener for my birthday that year and everything changed. In those days, the straighteners you could afford were pretty average and it took about an hour to straighten a whole head of hair but I would do it every morning because with tame hair, I was no longer embarrassed to head outdoors, I was super confident ! I have heard many women talking about losing their confidence when they go grey and when their hair thins out (probably why most of us choose to colour our hair these days) but I had thought that hair-confidence only applied to women. In a conversation with a friend this week, I discovered

espite your best intentions, if you ended up putting a big dent in your savings this Christmas or put a lot of your expenses on your credit card, it’s not a time to hope for the best or a big fi nancial windfall; a well thought out action plan can help to get you back on track in no time! Start by analysing what you spent your money on. By being aware of where you spent your money means that next time you’re in the same situation you might make some wiser fi nancial choices. It might be scary seeing how much you’ve spent on a night out, a shopping spree or a day out with the kids, but putting your head in the sand, although probably a more enticing solution, really isn’t recommended! Now that you’ve analysed your bank accounts and know where you stand fi nancially, you can work out your budget for the coming months and ask yourself a few tough questions about your upcoming expenses. Some example questions might be: • Is it essential that I attend that event or participate in that activity? If yes, then is there a cheaper solution or a way to be involved that doesn’t cost as much? • Is it essential that I buy something new to wear to the wedding or birthday party? Check out what’s already in your wardrobe or swap clothes with a friend! • Do I really need to buy a coffee once/twice/ three times a day? These questions will need to be as individual as you are; they’re just a few examples to get you thinking instead of operating by autopilot without really questioning where your hard-earned cash disappears to. We all have choices and the choices you make about your fi nances today could make a big difference the next time the holidays roll around!

Enjoy the water
T
he hot summer months are certainly here! (Although, hasn’t this week been good to have some cooler weather and even a little rain!) In the heat, those of us with air conditioners fi nd relief while those without try and do the best they can. But there’s no doubt, as we experience days of around 40 degrees that being outside is distinctly unpleasant! The dry mouth. The hot air blast against our skin. The sweat and heat sapping our strength so we long for a cool drink to bring relief. Perhaps we might even be fortunate enough to be able to enjoy soaking ourselves in a refreshing swim at the pool or beach. These images are helpful for us as we understand some parts of the Bible such as the Psalm which says, “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water”. The writer continues, “My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods... my soul clings to you; your right hand upholds me”. Just as water gives us life, relief and refreshment, so too can we fi nd life, relief and refreshment by coming to God. Th is is a great promise from God, that just as a person craves the refreshment of their favourite cool drink, the Bible makes it clear that a passionate desire and thirst for God will bring satisfaction to our soul, to our inner being. Th is is a great comfort to sustain us in all of life, but especially in those times when all around us seems “dry and weary”.

ll too often a client will come into the clinic after having been told they are depressed; often after being medicated for this with no positive result and often very negative results. All too often when a person has been to the doctor for unspecified problems and after a number of blood tests and scans where nothing is found, the convenient diagnosis is “Depression”. Of course, sometimes it is depression, but all too often people say, “I am not depressed, there is something wrong”. I have to say that all too often they are correct, there is something wrong but it is physiological not psychological. If a person has had a lot of antibiotics over a number of years, often the digestive system and the immune system are not functioning as they should and that always affects the brain/mind. All too often fi xing the gut fi xes the brain as Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride said in her book The Gut And Psychology Syndrome. Fatigue is often a cause of supposedly psychological issues. Any woman who has had a demanding child and has not been getting adequate rest or sleep for a number of years may present with seemingly depressive symptoms, yet fix the sleep and nourish the nerves and the so called depression goes away. I am not saying that you should ignore symptoms that seem to be depression. Naturally you should check things out and make sure that you are dealing with the right thing. However, eliminate the simple and easily treated causes fi rst before you go gung-ho into anti-depression medication. Remember the old adage; treat the cause not the symptom. If you fi x what is causing you to feel lousy, the symptom will go away. Symptoms are not diseases they are your body crying for help. The digestive system is the fi rst obvious place to start; then the nervous system and the immune system and fin ally the psyche. What you eat provides the building blocks for what will be you tomorrow.

Cricket: Penrith’s great run in the Grade Cricket competition has hit a pot hole after the side was beaten at home last weekend by Fairfield-Liverpool in sweltering conditions at Howell Oval. FairfieldLiverpool won the toss and sent Penrith into bat, with the local side picking up 176 runs. Tim Cummins top scored for Penrith with 49 but nobody made a great impact with the bat. Fairfield-Liverpool batted with composure and reached 180 runs in the 43rd over to secure the win. Despite the loss, Penrith sit in second position on the fi rst grade ladder behind Sydney University – a great achievement by the club.

Despite the heat, a good crowd of patrons attended the harness racing at the Penrith Paceway last Thursday night. Glacial Motion ($20.90) driven by Jim Douglas caused a bit of an upset in the fi rst. The fast lead time created by the leading brigade made it easier for horses to come from the rear and Glacial Motion was able to make the most of it. The second event went to Nonno Stride ($1.60) and with Mat Rue aboard he was able to go straight to the front and win like a short priced favourite should do. Sunnivue Caesar ran on reasonably well for second placing. Sassys A Kriden ($3.20) gave Bathurst trainer Mark Butler the fi rst of a training double winning the third quite well from Battlin Boy. Amanda Turnbull was the driver for Sassys a Kriden. Driver John O’Shea drove Marty Bee to win for trainer Mark Butler in the fourth and at $1.80 he was never really in danger
although The Informant tried hard to overhaul him in the home straight. Race five went to the unusually named Watchamecallit ($2.70) driven by Blake Fitzpatrick. Following on from a good third at her last Penrith start Pretty Ideal ($3.40) was able to run out a very convincing winner in the sixth. Favourite Major Denial suffered a major setback in the seventh when after jumping to the front the sulky wheel partially collapsed making him virtually uncompetitive. The ultimate winner was Domestic Art ($10.50) who enjoyed a good run before Gavin Fitzpatrick was able get him out in time to land the major prize from Only One Slim. Silent Enemy ($2.60) gave Jim Douglas and trainer Ian Wilson a double for the night in the eighth. Grandfather Jack led for most of the trip but Silent Enemy was able to overhaul him.

t’s the necessary evil of a professional footballer – the pre-season. But when you’ve come last for two years running, getting pre-season training right could make a big difference when things get real come March. The Greater Western Sydney Giants have stepped up their campaign for 2014 with a gruelling training session at the Wanda sand dunes in Cronulla last weekend. Number one draft pick Tom Boyd rated the session as the toughest in his time at the Giants. “It’s probably the hardest thing I’ve ever

done but it’s these kind of sessions where you push through as a team that make the team stronger than ever,” he said. “I’m really happy it’s over but I feel like I got a lot out of it.” Giants Head Coach Leon Cameron said the players are preparing for a big 2014. “Their effort and energy has been great all pre-season and they’ve come back after Christmas in great spirits and this sort of session brings them together and shows that,” Cameron said. The Giants will play their fi rst NAB Challenge match against the Swans at StarTrack Oval, Canberra on February 20. They will also host the Swans in Round 1 of the AFL on March 15.

Soward and Wallace put their past behind them to make a mark at Panthers
J

amie Soward and Peter Wallace say they have nothing to prove at Penrith, but there’s no doubt that the rugby league world’s eyes will very much be fi xated on the pair this season. Soward left St George-Illawarra in difficult circumstances mid-way through last season while Wallace was unwanted at the Broncos. Now the pair hope to emerge from the rugby league scrapheap to spearhead the Panthers’ campaign for a fi nals spot in 2014. “We’ve both played a lot of games and you only have to come and watch the field sessions to see we suit each other’s game pretty well,” Soward said. “I’m looking to try to tap into some of his (Wallace’s) skills and have a big year personally, but make sure that the team is going forward.” Soward is impressed with Penrith’s roster for 2014 and says the experience of players like Brent Kite will help the club. “There’s a lot of experience that we’ve bought this year but that’s going to mean nothing come round one,” he said. “We need to make sure that we’ve prepared well and get off to the right start. We’re doing a lot of hard work at the moment and still working on combinations.” Wallace’s homecoming follows his three year stint at Penrith from 2005 to 2007, where he struggled to cement a position in the team behind captain Craig Gower. As a St Marys junior, he says it feels good to have returned to the area he knows so well.
“There’s a really good feel around the place and it’s good to be back,” Wallace said. “It’s great to have an opportunity to come back and hopefully fi nish my career here.” When Soward agreed to a Phil Gould lifeline mid-way through last season to come to Penrith in 2014, the club had yet to sign Wallace or players like Jamal Idris. Now, Soward can see the side has the potential to make an impact in 2014. “When I signed I was coming out here for an opportunity – the rest was left up to the behind the scenes people,” he said. “It’s exciting times for Penrith and exciting times to be a Penrith fan, now it’s just a matter of us getting the results. “For us it’s about getting consistency and getting into the eight to start off with and seeing what happens from there.” Despite knowing the wider rugby league world will be watching their every move this season, Soward is confident he can shake off any criticism. “Me and the bloke next to me have nothing to prove because of the way we fi nished our time at other clubs,” he said. “We’re not going to answer questions about the Dragons or the Broncos all year, we’re here to talk about the Panthers. We’ve both got good contracts here and we’re both experienced enough to be able to handle it.” Former NSW halfback Peter Sterling believes Soward is critical to Penrith’s chances in 2014. “I’m thinking top six. I really rate their chances this year,” Sterling told Triple M. “I think Jamie Soward is going to have an influential season. He will feel wanted up there. He feels important going there and I think he will be very significant for them.”

Going for Broke League-themed film that will touch all of us
P
KATHERINE TWEED
enrith’s second-to-none rugby league following has the opportunity to be part of the creation of ‘Broke’, an Australian fi lm about a former rugby league star’s struggle with a gambling addiction. The fi lmmakers have launched a ‘crowd funding’ campaign, hoping to raise $55,000 toward the creation of the inspirational fil m, and are calling on the local community for assistance. Donations fund the fi lm’s creation with all profits made to be donated to the Men of League Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation supporting members of the rugby league community who are doing it tough. “I call it the people’s fi lm: everyone can be a part of it, no-one really profits and we get an important message out there,” said Penrithborn director, Heath Davis. Following a strong rugby league theme, the fi lm explores issues affecting many Australian families, particularly gambling and alcohol addiction. “It’s a fi lm about compassion, second chances
Heath Davis is making a film about a rugby league star whose life is in turmoil.
and humanity,” Mr Davis said. “There has been a lot of stuff happening off the field at the moment [in the NRL]. The sport has been getting a lot of bad press because these players are in the spotlight but these are issues that everyone can suffer from.” The fi lm is supported by a number of NRL greats and with $22,000 in donations already
accepted, it is well on its way to becoming a reality. To help reach the $55,000 target, donations of as little as $1 can be made, with certain perks along the way; these include having your name in the credits, having the opportunity to act in the fi lm and more.
