s we sit around our Christmas Trees, surrounded by family members, there are few that would think of those less fortunate families, broken and struggling. For the women and children who are supported by Penrith Domestic Violence Services and are living at the Women’s Refuge Centre, Christmas may not be as cheerful as it is in other households; many live in fear and others are heartbroken. “The women’s refuge provides a safe place for

women and children who are escaping domestic violence,” said Penrith Domestic Violence Services Manager, Anne Sillett. “Some of these women are in need of safe accommodation because they are fearful for their lives,” she said. Although things may not be looking up for the 21 women and 53 children who are currently being supported by the service, the festive season will come, and there are those in the community who are determined to make it a special one for these broken families. Upon hearing about the Penrith Domestic Violence Services, the team at Penrith Homemaker Centre had to do something.

“It is frightening that there are over 20 women and over 50 kids that are being supported by this organisation. It is a pity that something like this has to exist because of violence,” Kevin James, the owner of Penrith Homemaker Centre, said. The Centre purchased a gift for each of the 53 children and presented each family with a Christmas hamper. The gifts were delivered to the staff at Penrith Domestic Violence Services on Monday, who will distribute the gifts to the families on Christmas Eve. “The families are very, very grateful for the support. It means each family is going to have the chance to have a reasonably normal Christmas,” Ms Sillett said.

Residents fire up at chaotic public meeting on Kemps Creek waste issue It was supposed to be a democratic meeting, but a public forum on the State Government’s plan to send contaminated waste from Hunters Hill to Kemps Creek turned into chaos on Monday night... CASSANDRA O CONNOR

R

esidents, action groups and politicians were at best unruly at a public forum on the State Government’s plan to send contaminated waste to Kemps Creek on Monday evening. The meeting was held as part of the consultation process on the proposal, with representatives from the State Property Authority, SITA waste management facility, the Department of Planning as well as MP for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies in attendance. However, presentations made by the representatives were cut short as residents became frustrated and questioned the information they were being given. Simon Furness of the State Property Authority, which owns the contaminated site at Hunters Hill, cut his presentation short due to continual heckling from upset residents. The audience of 100 became particularly hostile when Mr Furness stated that though the soil contains radioactive elements, it is “not radioactive”. “You are confusing us, you say it is not radioactive yet it is contaminated,” questioned one resident. Robert Blackley of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, the regulator who will monitor the waste at Hunters Hill, only spoke for two minutes before he too was forced to sit down. Questions were then taken by the panel of experts, with many residents eager to express their anger, frustration and confusion.

Local News

Don’t send us cocktail of death

Simon Furness from the State Property Authority struggled with interruptions from residents. Inset: Locals ask questions of the experts.

A university student asked Mr Blackley what the exact radiation levels of the contaminated site were, but he admitted he could not answer the question with an exact figure. Ms Davies was continually targeted throughout the night, and was asked by Isabella of St Clair: “Why the backfl ip Tanya? How can you stand there and expect the people of western Sydney to believe you?” Ms Davies flatly denied the accusation. “There is no backfl ip,” she said. When Penrith Councillor Prue Car spoke, her accusation that the Government has betrayed the people of

western Sydney was met with passionate applause. Cr Car was very upset however, when after stating to the room that she represented the community, forum mediator, Stephen Treloar, allegedly winked at Ms Davies. “I’m sorry, but did you just wink at Tanya? I’m sorry but have you [disrespected] other speakers?” she asked angrily. Labor Cr John Thain also had the audience’s support when he asked: “Why do you want to send this cocktail of death out to us?” The meeting quickly descended into

chaos as the audience refused to listen to expert advice from independent radiation expert, Mark Zonter. Some residents left the meeting angered and disappointed that the discussion could not be conducted in a civil manner. Ms Davies’ closing remarks were drowned out by calls for residents to sign a petition against the waste and a sea of hands fought for the microphone to ask further questions despite the meeting being declared closed. Further public consultation will take place before the proposal is submitted to the Department of Planning for approval after February 8, 2013.

his is my fi nal column for 2012 and as such I hope you’ll allow me to indulge for the next 400 words or so and reflect on what has been a remarkable year in our city. It was the year we lost the iconic Log Cabin hotel, and the year the residents of Londonderry were left soaked and shocked by devastating floods. It was the year we cheered as Jessica Fox did us proud at the London Olympics, winning a silver medal, and a year when Penrith announced it was “here”. We debated the Victoria Bridge, got angry over waste going to Kemps Creek and voted in a new-look Council. The thousands of stories we’ve presented to you this year in The Western Weekender each make up a jigsaw puzzle of a city that gets up when it gets knocked down, shows resilience in the toughest of times and proves that good still very much exists in the world, as is evident by the many good news stories we’ve been able to bring you this year. I’d like to thank all of those who play a part in the jigsaw puzzle, because the Weekender family is large and varied. Firstly, I would very much like to thank my small but dedicated team of journalists who bring you the stories that shape our city each week. Cassandra O’Connor, Katherine Tweed and Nathan Taylor are the fi nest journalists in this city we call home, and this year have been on the ground at more stories than any other local newspaper, re-affi rming the Weekender’s position as Penrith’s news leader. I cannot thank them enough for how good they make me look every week, and I am proud of each of them. I’d like to thank all of our regular columnists and contributors – Peter Overton, Sarah Stewart, Mark Davies, Paul Dorin, Michael Todd, Michelle Grice, Richard Markowski, David Ellis, Francis Bevan, Elisha Stein, David Stein, Anthony Walker, Trent Baker, Martin Cominotto, John Lavender, Lorraine Pozza, ‘Century’, Matthew Halse, Warren Miller and Adam Scroggy – for their work during 2012. Thank you to all of our story subjects in 2012 – answering that phone call or email from our journalists is very much appreciated. I’d like to pass on my deepest gratitude to the management of the Weekender whose continued faith and support means that I enter my fi fth year as Editor in 2013.

I thank our sales executives who do an excellent job in servicing the businesses in our community, and it is no surprise that we carry more local advertising than any other local newspaper. So, thanks to the largest on-the-ground sales team in Penrith – Simon, James, Sergio, Linda, Rebecca, Ali, Cameron and Andrew. On that note, we at the Weekender are so grateful to the business community and all of our advertisers, no matter how big or small, for their continued stamp of approval each and every week. I’ve had a word with Santa Claus and hopefully he leaves an extra big present under the Christmas tree for our production team this year, because they continue to work exceptionally hard to produce our publication each week. My deepest of thanks to Irene, Alana and Madeline. Thanks to Melinda for capturing the moments that shaped 2012, to all the media advisors, marketing managers and PR folk who assist us from week to week, and to my wider team across our network of newspapers who are assisting to formulate a powerful, unprecedented group of independent publications. Most of all, on behalf of everyone at the paper, I would like to thank you – our readers – for your continued support. Each week when you pick up this newspaper, we hope you feel you get the most complete snapshot of our area you could hope for, because that’s our aim. We fi nish 2012 in a position to be proud of, and can hold our heads up high when we say that The Western Weekender is the number one newspaper in Penrith. We enter 2013 with the promise of building on that foundation, not resting on our laurels, and presenting to you the roller coaster ride of a year that it will almost certainly be. I would like to wish each and every one of you a very happy Christmas, and all the best for the holiday period. Our team will be back on deck on Monday, January 7 and our fi rst edition of 2013 will be released on Friday, January 11. If the tragedy in the United States this past week has taught us anything, it’s that at this time of the year, nothing is more important than family, and being together. Rest up, drink up and have a great break over the holidays. We’ll see you next year and will be raring to go... the story of Penrith 2013 is waiting to be told.

Childcare workers uncertain about national ranking system

1084WWD7468

hildcare services are essential for the families of Penrith, however as policies change and pressures on childcare workers rise, Penrith may fi nd itself with too many children and not enough carers. Vicki Skoulogenis, owner of local childcare centre, Mulgoa Pre-School, told the Weekender of an uncertainty amongst childcare providers and workers in the local area. She believes that the immediate introduction of new systems and government policies has left childcare workers feeling uncertain about the future. “I have had discussions with other childcare providers and centre owners. The introduction of new regulations, like the Quality Care Framework, have come on hard and fast,” she said. “Staff have not really had a chance to learn what it is about and it is leaving many of us afraid. We are really proud of our jobs and most carers are, but we have had no time to adjust.” The National Quality Care Framework was established by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations at the beginning of this year and applied to most early childhood childcare services. The framework aims to raise the quality of childcare in Australia by using a national rating system, however it is the thought of ranking that has local

childcare providers fearful. “Many childcare centre owners in the area are afraid that parents are going to draw conclusions from the rating system and no longer see their centre as quality care, even though it already is,” Ms Skoulogenis said. “We’re not sure what will happen next year and this is what parents and staff are really scared about.” Despite the uncertainty, Ms Skoulogenis can see that childcare is important to the Australian Government and sees their efforts as a good sign.

WIDEST RANGE IN PENRITH

“I think that regardless of who is in power, it is comforting that at least childcare is on the agenda. It is what we need and what parents are looking for,” she said. Federal MP for Lindsay, David Bradbury, said that there are no new requirements that need to be met in 2013 after the Quality Care program came into effect on January 1, 2012. “We’ve set realistic goals for the sector to adjust and we took deliberate action to phase in the new quality standards over 10 years to give centres time to adjust.”

Why is it that a country (Israel) can command so much influence in world affairs? A country with only a few millions of citizens and with a small geographical area, and lacking in most natural resources, is supported by western nations to the tune of billions of dollars annually. H

ow can a parent drop their child off to school only to later be told they’ll never be coming home? To me, like so many others this in inconceivable. But somehow it did happened. 20 innocent children, their teachers and principal all killed – less than two weeks before Christmas. But what makes even less sense to me is how easy it is to buy a high powered gun right across the US. Quite simply it’s stupid and irresponsible. I mean why would anyone want a semi-automatic weapon in their house? And why on earth would you possibly need more than one? The accused killer used weapons registered to his mother. He didn’t steal them, or smuggle them into the country, they were legal and sitting in his house. To most Australians the whole idea seems ridiculous. But what is just as unbelievable, or hard to understand is the fact that Americans aren’t getting rid of their guns – they’re buying more! Over the past week gun sales have sky rocketed with more people acting on their “constitutional right” to bear arms. Some have even gone as far as to suggest the teachers at the school where the massacre happened should also have had guns in their classrooms, to be able to fight back. To me this is absolutely absurd. Can

you imagine a loaded gun sitting in a room with dozens of six-year-olds? Guns should be nowhere near children. And they defi nitely should not be carrying them. It’s beyond belief that in the days following the tragedy an 11-yearold was caught carrying a gun to school to ‘protect’ himself. I mean how does a child get a gun, put it in his backpack and take it to school with no one noticing? My only hope is that this senseless and devastating event will make someone in a position of power actually think about change. President Obama says it’s time for “meaningful action”. But I say it’s time for a major overhaul. Time to get rid of the guns and stop the massacres. In Australia gun laws are tight and that’s the way they should be. We should be able to send our kids off to school or go to a shopping mall without fear. But my fi nal thought is for the children – the innocent victims taken far too soon and their families. May you all rest in peace and may your families fi nd comfort in each other.

Penrith has performed exceptionally well in the 2012 Higher School Certificate CASSANDRA O CONNOR

S

chool’s out for summer and so are the results for the Year 12 students who have hit the books this year to complete their fi nal year of secondary education. Results for the Higher School Certificate were published on Wednesday morning at 6am, with over 40,000 students logging on to the Board of Studies website in the fi rst hour to receive their results. For Glenmore Park student, Kiera Warda, who was school captain at Caroline Chisholm, the news was only good after she topped the state in Religious Studies. “I think the reason why I did so well was because my teachers emphasised the importance of backing up everything you say with religious texts – to construct an argument that has evidence,” she said. “We were also taught not just to look at the syllabus to expand our knowledge beyond just the dot points we were told we had to know – my teachers gave us a really holistic approach to the religious traditions we were studying.” Kiera was also named dux of the school and according to her school principal, Christine Howe, is an excellent role model for younger students. “She is a very bright and dedicated student and we are just so proud that she has done wonderfully in her exams,” Ms Howe said. And the good news continued across the Penrith region, with 11 students from Penrith High School set to receive the All

Rounders Award for achieving over 90 per cent in 10 units or more. “Overall results are excellent and are what we expected from a hard working and talented year group,” said Penrith

High School Principal, John Elton. He was particularly impressed with the results from a number of accelerated students – Year 11 students who completed selected subjects a year in advance.

“Ross Renninkilampi scored 99 per cent in 2 Unit Mathematics and 48/50 for Extension 1 Mathematics whilst classmate, Kane Hausfeld, scored 98 per cent in 2 Unit Mathematics,” he said.

Julia Gillard A time to remember and reflect

I

wish every Australian a very Merry Christmas and all the best for a safe, happy and prosperous New Year. Christmas can mean many things in this wonderfully diverse country of ours. For those many Australians who share the Christian tradition it is, of course, a special time of prayer and reflection on the timeless story of the little baby born in Bethlehem whose message changed the world. For all of us, the holiday season is a time to look back on the year just past and to absorb all the events that have happened in the life of our community and in our own families – the highpoints and the losses too. As we celebrate, many families will be facing the prospect of an empty seat at the Christmas table, especially those families of service personnel who made the supreme sacrifice in Afghanistan. They are so very much in our hearts. Fortunately, most of us will share this Christmas secure at home with those we love – beneficiaries of the freedom and prosperity that this land so richly affords us. But many Australians will be marking Christmas and New Year on duty in our nation’s name all around the world like our soldiers in Afghanistan, East Timor and the Solomon Islands, our scientists in far flung places like Antarctica, and our aid workers who bring care and dignity to the world’s most needy every day.

Tony Abbott From my family to yours

For so many here at home, the holiday period will be a time of duty – our police, emergency workers, medical staff, essential service providers – to name a few. They remain vigilant so we can relax – they have our deepest gratitude. Most importantly, let us remember that for those who are sick, lonely or entrusted with the care of others, Christmas may not be a time of cheer, or at least not unless we make it our business to help them share in the meaning of this season through our generosity. We rightly celebrate Christmas and look forward to it with anticipation and joy. I trust that Christmas 2012 – and the New Year to come – will bring out the best in us so that we can make our beautiful country the best it can be. Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, will continue her exclusive column with the Western Weekender in 2013.

C

hristmas is a great time of the year. It’s a time when we reflect on all that is good and wonderful in life. All of us as Australians have much to be grateful for. We are an open, decent and generous people who live free of the turmoil and bitter divisions that have gripped other nations. For some though, for whatever reason, Christmas can be a difficult time and it is up to all of us to remember everyone who is doing it tough. It is a time to be mindful of those who are currently not sharing in all of life’s blessings. So much of our fortune is due to the sacrifice of others, and to the volunteers in our community who give their time freely to assist others, I say thank you. You are an inspiration to us all. Many Australians have done it tough in 2012. The challenges of nature,

economic uncertainty and the cost of living have all tested us but we are a strong, resourceful and resilient people. We came through last year and the challenge is to make 2013 a year of hope, reward and opportunity. Th is Christmas, I pay particular tribute to the Australian troops currently serving abroad and their families at home. I felt immensely honoured to be able to visit our troops in Afghanistan last week and say thanks on behalf of a grateful nation to them for the work they do to help keep Australia safe; and also for their work promoting what we regard as the universal decencies of humanity in a country which has been pretty short on decency for a very long time. So, from our family to you, Margie and I wish you a happy Christmas. May it be enjoyable and peaceful and a safe time for everyone and may 2013 be a year of hope for all Australians. Federal Opposition Leader, Tony Abbott will be continuing his exclusive column in the Western Weekender in 2013. What are your thoughts on his column? Email your feedback to news@westernweekender. com.au or send a letter to the Western Weekender, Unit 2, 42-44 Abel Street, Jamisontown, 2750.

MAYOR’S NEWS MARK DAVIES

Merry Christmas Personally, Christmas for me and my family is primarily about celebrating the birth of Jesus and everything God has given us. Whatever this time of year means to you, I’m sure most people agree it’s a special time to celebrate, as families and as a community. It’s an important time to appreciate the people, places and values that make our lives meaningful. It’s also a time to show extra compassion and generosity to those who might be struggling in some way. It’s such a busy time, but also a good time to relax and reflect on the year’s highs and lows. Looking ahead, 2013 is shaping up to be a remarkable year for Penrith. With around 100,000 local, national and international visitors expected in the fi rst half of the year, we have some great opportunities to show the rest of Australia and the world what we’re made of. I hope you’ll join in celebrating Australia Day at the Lakes on January 26. I wish everyone in our community a safe and happy Christmas and New Year and look forward to seeing what 2013 brings.

Sun Sound resounds A catchy jingle will remind you to be sun safe this summer

KATHERINE TWEED

s we begin to spend more time out in the sun, by the pool or at the beach, the message to remain sun safe is all the more important. Two London Olympians visited Penrith Pools on Tuesday to promote the Cancer Council’s ‘Sun Sound’ campaign, which could help to protect thousands from skin cancer this summer. Kayak gold medallist, David Smith and Nina Curtis, who won silver in sailing at the recent Olympics, spend most of their time out in the sun, especially when they are training – so keeping safe in the sun is one of their key priorities. The ambassadors for the campaign visited Penrith Pools to encourage the local community to protect their skin when prompted by the Sun Sound, a catchy jingle that plays once an hour between 11am and 3pm each day. “It is a good way to take on skin cancer in a different direction. All the campaigns in the past have always been about awareness but what we’re starting to fi nd is that everyone is aware but it is just not translating,” Mr Smith said. “We are trying to be more proactive instead of reactive when it comes to skin cancer. It is a really good thing,” he said. Both Olympians believe that by setting an example, they can help to prevent skin cancer in people for the years to come. “As a kid, whenever I got burnt it wasn’t because I wanted to, it was because I

forgot. It’s a nice way of reminding everyone,” Ms Curtis said. The Sun Sound is a catchy jingle that will play regularly over the loud speakers at local pools during the summer, reminding people to protect themselves with hats, sunscreen, sunglasses, clothing and to stay in the shade. Penrith Pools is just one location out of over 60 beaches and pools taking part in the Sun Sound campaign in NSW. “The Sun Sound itself is a gentle

reminder to people to do this stuff. The Sun Sound itself promotes the sun safe message,” said Rodney Titovs of the Cancer Council Nepean branch. In the Greater Western Sydney region, more than 600 people are diagnosed with melanoma and about 90 people die from melanoma each year so it is hoped that this message will reduce those numbers. For more information on the Sun Sound campaign contact the Cancer Council on 13 11 20.

POLICE SNAPSHOT Injured in chase: Officer dislocated his knee About 10.40am on Monday, December 17, police were patrolling First Street, Kingswood when they saw a 22-year-old male pushing a shopping trolley that contained a television. On seeing police the male has fled on foot leaving the shopping trolley and television behind. Whilst affecting the arrest of that young person, police were surrounded by the group of young males and police deployed their OC Spray. Police managed to continue the arrest of the young person who has been charged with offensive behaviour, assault police and resist arrest. n an effort to minimise dangerous driving this Christmas season, police officers will be out to enforce the road rules on local roads and highways. Drivers who break the law risk losing their licence with double demerit penalties starting Friday, December 21 until Friday, January 4, 2013. NSW Assistant Commissioner John Hartley said motorists can expect to see a highly visible police presence on freeways, motorways, highways and suburban roads throughout the festive period as part of the police force’s annual Operation Safe Arrival campaign. “The festive period is a time to be spent with friends and family, not in the back of an ambulance, an intensive care ward or police cell,” he said. ““Day in, day out, we will stop and book drivers for speeding, drink driving, using their mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt,” he said. Assistant Commissioner Hartley added that the increased number of police on the roads would lead to more rogue motorists being caught. “You are twice as likely to be breath-tested, have your speed checked or be spoken to by police during Operation Safe Arrival,” Assistant Commissioner Hartley said. Last year some 12,612 motorists were booked for speeding and 812 motorists for driving whilst under the influence of alcohol. Part of being a responsible driver this Christmas is not only obeying the road rules but also making sure your car itself is safe to drive. “Most accidents on the road are preventable,” according to owner of CV Joint Mechanics, Darren Yallop. “If you know that you are going away this

Christmas or will be driving with people in the car, your primary concern should be their safety. There’s many things you can do to your car before you hit the roads this Christmas such as taking your car to a mechanic for a pre holiday safety check. “You should be checking your levels, tyre pressure, oil, water levels, fluid levels, breaks and ticking off what the manufacturers handbook says. “It’s just one way you can make sure that your car is safe to drive, especially if you’re driving 1,000 kilometres, you don’t want to break down on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere and wreck your Christmas plans. By servicing your car you at least know you’ll have a safe and happy Christmas.”

Approximately 450 metres of new pathway has been constructed in North Penrith in just one day, running the entire length of Lambridge Place as well as along the south side of Andrews Road to Castlereagh Road. Penrith Mayor Mark Davies visited the path this week and acknowledged the outstanding contributions of local companies JK Williams and Western Suburbs Concrete, which together with Penrith City Council have completed pathway and landscaping works at Lambridge Estate in record time and at a reduced cost to Council – savings of nearly $65,000. “I’m grateful to JK Williams and Western Suburbs Concrete for their outstanding contributions to Lambridge Estate pathway and landscaping works,”Cr Davies said. Residents from the nearby Waterside Estate can now access nearby pool and café facilities more safely and easily thanks to the path.

The 2013 Penrith Visitors Guide and Event Program has been launched at the historic Fernhill Estate in Mulgoa this week. The new guide embraces the values of the ‘Penrith is Here’ branding that was launched earlier this year and showcases the beauty of Penrith’s natural setting as well as local events, attractions and visitor services. The guide will hopefully boost visitor expenditure in Penrith, which is worth some $230 million each year. Funded by more than 30 businesses in partnership with Penrith City Council, the guide and events program will be a useful tool for not only businesses in the tourism industry but local businesses more generally. Just some of the event highlights next year include the Annual Working Truck Show at the Museum of Fire in April and the national Dragon boat Championships to be held in the same month.

With so many people in the local area doing it tough this year, the United Way Penrith Community Fund, with the help of many local businesses, had to work harder than ever. “We are up to nearly 700 hampers this year. You can see that the numbers of people who need a hand has nearly doubled this year. It shows you how hard things are out there,” said Penrith City Centre Manager, Gai Hawthorn. “It is tough times but we are so blessed to be part of a local community and a local charity that can help out. We are blessed to live in a place like this,” she said. With the help of Penrith Homemaker Centre, NAB, Bankwest and Westpac

Precious memories

Westfield’s Christmas Giving trees as well as Westfield Penrith, ABCOE, Hoyts, Tattersalls, Panthers and the Hicks group, the festive season got a little brighter for the homeless community of Penrith this week. It was not only the big corporations who were helping with the donations and the wrapping, businessmen and women from Penrith’s small business community also lent a helping hand. Troy Dodds, editor of the Western Weekender, rolled up his sleeves to help pack Christmas hampers on Wednesday. “Christmas can be a very happy time of year but it can also be a very sad time of year and a very tough time of year for families who are doing it a bit tough,” he said. “It is fantastic that people from the local community are chipping in to brighten the day and brighten the festive season for these people.” The relief hampers and Christmas presents were handed out to the homeless at Kingswood railway station on Thursday as well as on Friday at PCYC Penrith. “Sometimes we can all get caught up in Christmas shopping and Christmas parties and all that stuff around Christmas but the true meaning of Christmas is helping others and making sure that the spirit of the season is truly alive,” Mr Dodds said.

TV remote controller started argument: A 39-year-old man appeared in Penrith Local Court this week after breaching an Apprehended Violence Order and causing damage to property owned by his landlord. At 10.45am on August 3, 2012, police were called to a property in South Penrith. According to facts tendered to the court, the man had been out drinking the previous night, before entering the house at South Penrith at roughly 2.30am in the morning. The house is occupied by a woman and two children. The man then opened the door of the room where the woman was asleep with the children, which led to a verbal argument in relation to television remote controls. The man then left the room and punch a hole in the door. He was ordered to pay $110 as well as $83 in court fees. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Police obtained CCTV footage and observed the man leaving the train. Police attended his home residence, placed him under arrest and conveyed him to Penrith Police Station. The man had been on bail for the same offence against another 18-year-old woman less than a month before this incident and since 1988 has been subject to 10 charges, nine of which were of a sexual nature. The man was sentenced to a term of imprisonment for eight months however the term of imprisonment was suspended and he was released from custody on the condition that he enters a good behaviour bond. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Nail spas not so polished Local nail professional warns of false advertising and poor practices at nail spas KATHERINE TWEED

K

eeping those fi ngers and toes polished is important to many women and the amount of nail spas and salons in Penrith alone is proof of that. But what would you do if you knew that you weren’t getting what you paid for? There are horror stories emerging in the local area of women developing infections or reactions after visiting nail spas in Penrith and it is believed that the cause is incorrect practice and false advertising. “A lot of clients have come to me with reactions, fungal infections and natural nails that are brittle and in poor condition all because of nail spas that are not correctly advertising their products and are using instruments that have not been properly sterilised,” said local nail professional, Skye McIntyre. “They are ruining people’s nails without them even realising it. It is horrific.” Fairtrading has revealed to the Weekender that this year, at least one nail spa in Penrith has been brought to their attention regarding an unsatisfactory pedicure. Aside from incorrect practices that are causing damage to nails, some nail spas in the area are misinforming the public regarding the products that they use, which could have serious repercussions. A new product on the market, CND Shellac, is a hybrid of polish and gel that lasts for over 14 days with zero dry time, no nail damage and a high gloss fi nish that

comes off in eight minutes. It is taking the industry by storm however there are many places falsely advertising the use of this product. Ms McIntyre warned women in the local area to ensure that they go to a CND Shellac approved salon to avoid having an

experience that could end in nail damage. “I have seen nail spas in Penrith suggesting that they are using CND Shellac but they are not. I have had girls come to me who have been scared off using Shellac because they have had bad experiences with a product that was not

CND,” she said. “I think that more than anything, it is really important to go to someone who really cares about your nails.” Ms McIntyre runs a home-based salon in Penrith. For more information visit www.skyemcintyre.com.au.

Penrith’s new recruits: Alexandra Kent, Aidan Miller, Robert Capewell and Michael Smith.

Police Christmas presence: Six recruits join the ranks

J

ust in time for Christmas, Penrith Police have received four new probationary constables and St Marys two new officers after 304 students were attested last Friday. Joining Penrith’s ranks are Alexandra Kent, Aidan Miller, Robert Capewell and Michael Smith. Mr Capewell was formerly a transit officer on Sydney’s train network but when their duties were handed over to the NSW Police Force earlier this year, Mr Capewell was offered the opportunity to study to become a police officer. “I loved my previous role [as a transit officer] so when I was offered the chance to re-train I thought it was a good option,” he said. “I think the community will defi nitely benefit long term from the change – I think we will be able to keep our trains safer.”

Locals Alexandra Kent and Aidan Miller both joined the NSW Police Force as it was an aspiration they had for several years. “I wanted to become a police officer ever since I was six... I would really like to become a weapons instructor and spend some time with highway patrol,” Mr Miller said. “It’s the standard cliche, wanting to make a difference,” added Ms Kent. “I really want to do some work for the juvenile emergency response team and spend time in general duties,” she said. Mr Smith decided to retrain as a police officer after being a machinist after considering the career change for years. Penrith Local Area Commander, Superintendent Ben Feszczuk, said their arrival is fantastic news for the local community and a welcomed boost to policing resources in the area.

alda Silvy is well known for her work in the community as Producer of Music at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, but Ms Silvy has recently been recognised for her dedication in another capacity, as a member of the Catholic Church. Ms Silvy was awarded the prestigious Benemerenti medal by Pope Benedict XVI, the second highest award made to a lay member of the church for service to

the Catholic Church. “I was notified by letter that I was to be awarded the medal at a high mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral in Parramatta,” she said. “I am very humbled by the honour... the medal was awarded to me for work that I have done over a period of time with the church – I would organise charity balls and functions, I also taught scripture classes at schools and was on the fundraising committee for rebuilding the church after it burnt down. “The high mass was beautiful, there was a beautiful choir that sang ancient

hymns.” The Benemerenti medal has only been awarded to 114 people world wide since World War Two so was certainly a cause for celebration. Ms Silvy said that she just tries to help people whenever there is the opportunity to, especially in the area of music which she has long been passionate about. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Penrith Music Centre (the forerunner to the Joan Sutherland Centre), the Nepean District Music Club and Penrith Conservatorium of Music.

outh Penrith resident, Jodie Gardner, was so distraught after her mother passed away earlier this year from terminal cancer that she wanted to help other patients and families get through what can be only described as an incredibly difficult time. So, Ms Gardner decided to call upon the Ross Hutchison Foundation to help assist her in raising money to purchase three much-need NIKKI pumps for

Nepean Hospital’s Inpatient Cancer Services. NIKKI pumps administer pain medication and allows palliative care patients to have the option of remaining in their homes during their battle. “People can take the pumps home in a carry bag and each day they are topped up with medication by staff from the hospital, it’s very strictly monitored,” Ross Hutchison said. “Th is then allows people, for example, to go home to their families at Christmas and New Years and then come back. But unfortunately they may not come back,

but at least they’ll pass away at home with their loved ones.” Mr Hutchison said the money was raised throughout various community events over the past 12 months. “We raised the money through a series of luncheons, concerts and race nights,” he said. Ms Gardner said her hard work and dedication to the cause was all in the name of her late mother. “I knew there weren’t many NIKKI pumps at Nepean Hospital, so I thought I’d do something in honour of my mum,” she said.

t might look like a construction zone now but in five days the people of Penrith will have an exciting new entertainment destination to sink their teeth into – AMF Penrith. Opening its doors in Penrith for the fi rst time in three years this Boxing Day, AMF aims to bowl over all of the other local competition and become the city’s number one playground for young and old. Featuring an impressive 26 lanes, laser skirmish facility, dodgem cars, fullylicensed bar, 52 gaming arcade machines and event room – the new AMF looks phenomenal and promises plenty. “The new AMF is what we call a hybrid centre, it will be a mix between a traditional AMF centre and a Kingpin Bowling facility,” AMF Penrith Manager, Kylie Bouwmeester, said. “The centre will have that stylish corporate look and feel like Kingpin, and also be the fi rst centre where we have actually split the lanes so we can have social bowling on one side and league on the other. Ms Bouwmeester said the Penrith community had been crying out for another AMF centre ever since the previous facility on Woodriff Street closed its doors in 2009. “The local community are just hanging out for something new and to have us back,” she said. “The people of Penrith are just passionate about bowling, and this new

ast Wednesday, December 12, Penrith RSL opened its new multi-level car park to facilitate the expanding number of members and guests visiting the club. Special guests included the Mayor Mark Davies, former Mayor Greg Davies, and Penrith RSL Chairman and President, Neville Barnier. Around 40 Penrith patrons and residents showed up to enjoy the free sausage sizzle BBQ and to watch the

Karen Harrison, Executive Manager of People Services at the Penrith RSL said the car park will benefit patrons and their guests who visit the popular club. “It is already making a big impact. You can see many patrons already enjoying the extra spaces, they like the extra lighting and safety of the camera surveillance and security,” Ms Harrison said.

Penrith brand to receive boost Council will roll out a comprehensive marketing plan before Rowing World Cup

W

CASSANDRA O CONNOR

ith a number of major events being staged in Penrith in the fi rst half of 2013, Penrith City Council is looking to spend nearly $150,000 on promotional events and materials to put Penrith in the spotlight. In the next six months, over 100,000 visitors are expected to converge on Penrith for the Australian Youth Olympics, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa performance at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Rowing World Cup, National Dragon Boat Championships, Bicentenary of the Blue Mountains Crossing and more. To take advantage of the unprecedented number of visitors, Councillors unanimously approved a number of marketing activities to compliment the successful ‘Penrith is Here’ campaign. Th rough existing budgeted funding, Council will develop a social media campaign, street banner program, support for volunteers program, building decorations (with the help of the Penrith City Centre Association) and markets along the Nepean River in the lead up to the Rowing World Cup. Barbara Magee, Penrith City Council’s Manager of Corporate Communications and Marketing is excited at the work being done to further Penrith’s image. “When we did the branding ‘Penrith is Here’ we spoke to 50 stakeholders who all said that they needed to have a prospectus, and other materials to further the branding, so we came up with a marketing

plan that would complement ‘Penrith is Here’,” she said. “We always knew that we needed more than just a logo, so this marketing plan is the next stage to be implemented. Already, we have having one to two really credible enquiries every week about Penrith as a host for major events – so the branding is defi nitely working.” A prospectus on Penrith will be

launched to business representatives attending the Rowing World Cup and in the three weeks prior to the major sporting event, Council will be endeavouring to hold three markets at Tench Reserve. “We are going to hold markets on the three weekends prior to the Rowing World Cup, which will sell high quality, boutique, locally produced goods. It’s all about showcasing Penrith’s talents to the visitors

and athletes who will be training and staying here before the event,” she said. orry, pain and fear disappeared off kids’ faces, if only for a moment, when the team from Stir Crazy Noodles donated Christmas presents to sick kids at Nepean Hospital’s Children’s Ward on Wednesday. Chris Sulfaro, Children’s Ward Nursing Unit Manager, said the hospital thrives on donations from the community at this time of year. “We don’t have a lot of donations at the

moment, so having some gifts to be able to give out to children that are unfortunate enough to be in hospital around Christmas time will just be fantastic,” she said. Stir Crazy’s marketing manager Deborah Smolen, said the Noodle Bar’s Christmas donation began last year at Mt Druitt Hospital before the Stir Crazy team decided to spread the love to other local Children’s Wards. “All of the money raised enabled us to buy 90 presents, which we have split up between the three hospitals – Nepean, Mt Druitt and Hawkesbury,” she said.

Gift of a different sort: Blood donations desperately needed

The TAFE Art Bus showcases students’ self portraits completed in class.

Art on the move: Bus gallery to tour western Sydney elf-portraits by 21 students from the Nepean Arts and Design Centre at Kingswood TAFE will be showcased on a commuter bus converted into a mobile art gallery. The mobile art gallery, officially launched last Thursday, will travel through Penrith, Mt Druitt, The Hills Shire and Blacktown for the next three months, to encourage the western Sydney community to become more involved in the arts and provide valuable exposure

for the TAFE students. Cecelia Cilesio, Director Education, Arts, Media and Entertainment at TAFE Western Sydney Institute, said the initiative is a celebration of western Sydney’s young artists and provides an opportunity to showcase local talent. “The bus will act as a moving art gallery that displays our students’ creativity and inspiration throughout their local communities,” she said. People have the option to vote for the winner of the ‘People’s Choice Award’ and the winning portrait will be exhibited at the Lewers Bequest.

Female social workers receive first equal pay entitlements

A

round 150,000 community sector employees across Australia will benefit from a new and fairer pay system, which began on 1 December 2012. Federal Member for Lindsay, David Bradbury, met with local community sector workers to celebrate this historic victory for equal pay. Hailed as one of the most momentous laws to have been passed in Fair Work history, the Federal Government has injected $2.8 billion dollars into the Social and Community Services Pay Equity Special Account to close gender inequality in the workforce. Equal Pay Ambassador for the Australian Services Union, Maree McDermott, said: “I have been working in this sector for 25 years and have been underpaid at least $20, 000. Women workers have been underpaid anywhere between 19 to 43 per cent. Although the increase in pay is monumental it has always been about the change we can bring to future female workers.” The union’s ongoing determination to change the federal system has resulted in women who work in the non-government social and community sector industries being paid the same amount as men with similar qualifications. The landmark achievement by the ASU will now see hundred of thousands of workers receive equal pay entitlements nine times over the next eight years. “With over 200,000 community workers nationally, 30,000 being from NSW, our aim was to lobby on behalf of

are regarded in the workplace. “It is a great legacy for those who have been in the sector for so long to have fought so hard and achieved what they did,” he said. “The fi rst real step was going from the campaign trail to changing Federal Industrial Law. Once this was changed the ASU could bring a case to Fair Work Australia to be revised,”Mr Bradbury explained. “The Gillard Government had a vision of what they wanted to achieve in their budget and this was one of the priorities.”

everyone,” ASU member, Carolyn Knight said. “We are so passionate about eliminating gender inequalities in the workplace so even though it was a long road we remained patient. We reminded ourselves that this was a social justice issue that needed to be addressed in order to lead the way for other female dominated industries.” Mr Bradbury has been supporting the ASU since the beginning; he has witnessed their victorious journey to change the way in which female workers

or an organisation with over 100,000 members, you would think that the Inner Wheel would constantly be in the spotlight. However, these women are more than happy to continue meeting together, learning from each other and raising money for charity without all the fuss. The once exclusive club is the largest women’s volunteer organisation in the world and has members from countries across the globe. Generally, the women meet together on a monthly basis to “extend a hand of friendship”, listen to guest speakers and raise money for causes that they believe are worthy. Within the local area, there are two branches of the club which, until recently, only took on members who were related to a member of Rotary. “We are now open to any woman in the community who feels that she has something to offer the club,” said District Secretary and Penrith club member, Megan Hodges. “It doesn’t matter what race, creed or colour you are, you are more than welcome to get in touch,” she said. Together, the Penrith and Nepean branches of the club are part of District A53, one of the many districts of the Inner Wheel, and aside from being involved in fundraisers with other districts from across the world, they also work together on fundraising projects that are closer to

BUSINESS WOMEN’S VIEWS BUSINESS Richard Markowski

The right loan

T

he prudent way to fi nance a business is to match the type of funding to the assets being fi nanced. For example: goodwill and losses should be fi nanced by equity, property should be fi nanced by equity or long-term loans, plants and equipment should be fi nanced by asset fi nance over the useful life of the asset or equity, stock should be fi nanced by a combination of trade creditors, trade fi nance and overdraft and trade debtors or receivables should be fi nanced by overdraft/revolving credit facilities or invoice factoring/discounting. The advantage of fi nancing a business by matching type of funding to asset life is the avoidance of pressure from lenders to repay loans when the business either expands rapidly or starts to make losses. However, it is not often possible to follow this prudent formula, as funds are seldom available for the longer-term requirements such as equity and long-term loans. Owners then have to consider the use of short-term funds with loans subject to performance covenants and that are repayable on demand. In years gone by, bankers were prepared to fi nance working capital (stock and debtors) with overdrafts supported by debentures, granting them fi xed and floating charges over assets and, depending on the level of risk, further supported by directors’ personal guarantees – a complex arrangement. Therefore, more businesses are looking at debtor fi nancing. Richard Markowski is from Bibby Financial Services Australia Pty Ltd

Toughen up

A joke or two

W

I

arning: this article contains opinions that may be controversial or at the very least, unconventional. And I think the people who need to hear them most are younger women who are starting, or planning to start a business. But there’s a good deal of wisdom in there for those of us who have been around a while longer too: 1. Stop identifying yourself as a ‘woman’ entrepreneur (or a ‘mumpreneur’, or any other made up term). By doing this you assign yourself to a different ‘race’ than everyone else and give yourself a different set of rules. You are just an entrepreneur. 2. Stop thinking that it is difficult to hire male staff and to work with them. We can assume that men don’t work well with a woman as a leader. If you think you can’t manage men at work, then it’s you that needs to improve your leadership skills. 3. Ignore the naysayers. Don’t get bogged down by remarks like: “It’s so much tougher for a woman entrepreneur” and: “It’s just a hobby business”. Keep your eye on your goals. 4. Don’t listen to the myth that women are emotionally unstable. The fact is, women are wired to be emotional and resilient. Be emotionally intelligent and use the power of resilience to bounce back when you encounter failures. The common theme with all these tips is essentially to toughen up. Stop making excuses based on your gender and start focusing on moving your business forward.

’m going for a fun(ish) way to end the year, by reciting some key quotes that businesses should take note of: 1) To start something is easy but to fi nish something, it requires special effort 2) Don’t open a shop unless you like to smile 3) If you think it’s expensive to hire a professional to do the job, wait until you hire an amateur 4) Finally, a great lesson in marketing: You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You went up to her and say, “I am very rich. Marry me”. That’s DIRECT MARKETING. You are at a party with a bunch of friends and see a gorgeous girl. One of your friends goes up to her and pointing at you says, “He is very rich. Marry him”. That’s ADVERTISING. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and get her telephone number. The next day you call her and say, “Hi, I am very rich. Marry me”. That’s TELEMARKETING. You are at a party and see a beautiful girl. You get up and straighten your tie, you walk up to her and pour her a drink. You offer her a ride home, and then say, “By the way, I’m very rich. Will you marry me?”. That’s PUBLIC RELATIONS. You are at a party and see a gorgeous girl. She walks up to you and says, “You are very rich”. That’s BRAND RECOGNITION. You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and say, “I am very rich. Marry me”. She gives you a nice hard slap on your face. That’s CUSTOMER FEEDBACK. I wish all readers a Merry Christmas! THE WESTERN WEEKENDER PENRITH’S #1 GUIDE FOR OLDER RESIDENTS

hristmas is about being with family and friends and spreading the joy and love all around. Being part of a family doesn’t always necessarily mean sharing the same blood though. There are many little girls and boys out there missing out on having a special bond with a grandparent. Find a Grandparent is a non profit organisation that has set up a program to bridge the generational gap and whose purpose it is to give love and care only a grandparent can provide. Many of us would have fond memories of being spoilt by their grandparents at Christmas time. A few might remember Granny sneaking you a few extra cookies while Pop would sneak

some extra pocket money into your Christmas stocking. The best memories though are when both would have hugged the stuffi ng out of you and been there to explain to you the meaning of Christmas over some pudding. But some children don’t have that unconditional support that only grandparents can provide, so that is why families now can adopt a grandparent! Joining up to this initiative gives you the chance to be a surrogate grandparent to kids who don’t have a regular senior figure in their lives. Th is fulfi lling experience will change your life by giving you the opportunity to care for others and see how they grow up.

And some seniors don’t have grandkids or their families live too far awa; this is why Find a Grandparent offers companionship to those seeking a family. Both children and seniors want to fi nd a family that will love and support them. t’s never too late to get those dancing shoes on and learn how to salsa, jive, or do the twist. Dancing in the last few years has become a popular pastime for many elderly citizens in the Penrith region. Professor of Geriatric Medicine and Director of the Aging Bone Research Program at the Nepean Hospital Clinical School, Dr Gustavo Duque, said: “both muscle and bone mass are lost with aging. In addition, fat infi ltrates muscle and bone so the only way to try and maintain bone and muscle is by doing appropriate exercise and having a healthy diet”. With dancing, whether it is ballroom or aerobics, many are fi nding their feet again and leading a healthier life style. After one semester of weekly dancing, students have shown that they have improved bone and muscle strength, increased body tone and better posture and balance that helps prevent falls and fractures. “Dancing involves balance which is what seniors need to practice when they get older to prevent them from falling. In addition the number of muscles that exercise while dancing is higher than walking,” Dr Duque said. One dance session has the same physiological effect as a traditional aerobic class. Along with increases in stamina and flexibility, dancing has health benefits ranging from the reduction of stress and

tension, increased personal confidence, and prevention of conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, osteoporosis, depression and dementia. The Brain Foundation says that joining a dance class can even reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s. After each semester of dance classes, test results have shown that seniors’ memory and recall had improved significantly. Th is is attributed to the repetitive dance moves learnt in class week after week. Therese Walz is the owner and trained dancer at Ballroom Dance Studio and she agrees that it is important for the elderly to dance because it is a good tool for helping with the early stages of Alzheimer’s. “There are many great benefits to come from dancing but one I heard about recently was a study that the Illawarra Retirement Village were doing at UWS in relation to how ballroom dancing affects the brain and how it helps to increase memory and reduce Alzheimer’s,” Ms Walz said. Whatever type of dancing you choose there is much benefit to be gained physically. Most classes can be adjusted to accommodate the fitness level of the individual and can be choreographed for beginners, intermediate or advanced students. Specific types of dancing recommended for those in their golden years include ballroom, which is designed to reduce signs of dementia; the tango, which helps patients living with Parkinson’s disease and the waltz, which is noted for

improving heart failure and overall wellbeing. “I started classes for adults and seniors back in June this year. So far I have seen a general interest. We offer three styles of ballroom; Modern, Latin and New Vogue so there is something for everyone,” Ms Walz said. It is never too late to dance for a better lifestyle, according to Penrith Ballroom Dance student reg, who learned to dance in his fi fties. “Classes offered here are designed for anyone interested in improving their

wellbeing while doing something fun. It just so happens that many seniors who come through the door want to learn how to dance because they have booked a cruise. By the end of our courses they are confident in showing off their new dances that we teach,” he said. And the best part of dancing aside from all the great health benefits? It is a great opportunity to meet new people too. Many seniors are joining up to dance classes because they provide the opportunity to meet new people and increase overall happiness.

Vitamin D vital for seniors Here’s a good excuse to enjoy spending more time outdoors exercising...

A

LAUREN TESOLIN

re you getting enough Vitamin D? A common problem amongst the elderly is the lack of Vitamin D they take in each day. According to ABC Health and Wellbeing one in three people have an insufficient level of Vitamin D. “Vitamin D is essential because it works in conjunction with calcium and other minerals to make sure that bones stay healthy. Vitamin D is needed for bone strength, bone density, muscle contraction and nerve conduction,” said nutritionist, Susan Williams, of Penrith’s Zest Nutrition. Many people are unaware that they are low in Vitamin D because they have a lot of calcium in their diet, but little do they know that the two chemicals work together to maintain healthy bones. “Seniors need more Vitamin D because their skin cannot effectively synthesize calcium,” Ms Williams continued. Vitamin D can be obtained from the sun’s UV rays and foods to help absorb calcium into the body effectively. “Sunlight is the best source of Vitamin D but there are foods high in Vitamin D that can be eaten with a well balanced diet,” she said. In older citizens there is a reduced chance of obtaining this vitamin because they exercise outdoors less and may not prepare a proper diet. A potential problem for the senior population is how much physical activity

they are doing each day out in the sun. More often than not, seniors are unable to do strenuous amounts of exercise, therefore limiting their time outdoors. People over the age of 65 cannot consume heat as well as a when they were younger or move as easy so they tend to stay inside. It is recommended by Nutrition Australia that people spend two to three hours a week in the sun whether it is taking a walk or doing simple exercises to keep your bones strong. “If seniors have limited Vitamin D and calcium absorption then they are more prone to bone fractures, bone density, hip problems, aching tendons and muscles and even osteoporosis,” Ms Williams said. At the University of Amsterdam results show that insufficient Vitamin D levels can even lead to depression, increased susceptibility to infection and cancers, hypertension and Multiple Sclerosis. Diet can also be a contributing factor as to why one may be Vitamin D deficient. A balanced diet with Vitamin D rich foods is vital to maintain wellbeing. “Good sources of Vitamin D rich foods include fortified foods and drinks such as milk, soy drinks, orange juice, cheese, oily fish, liver, mushrooms, eggs, anchovies, yogurt, turkey, pork and beef,” Ms Williams suggested. Reasons why seniors don’t get enough Vitamin D nutrient foods vary. Common reasons included their lack of interest in cooking, or being too tired to prepare a proper meal. If you are at risk of being Vitamin D

Susan Williams of Zest Nutrition recommends seniors watch their Vitamin D levels.

deficient it is recommended that you step up the UV ray intake, prepare Vitamin D rich foods or supplement it with vitamins to make sure that you are getting enough. “In our clinic we use a supplement that

is a high dose of Vitamin D drop, we have found it easy for the elderly to take especially if they have difficulty swallowing large tablets,” Ms Williams recommended.

epean Legacy is celebrating its most successful year yet, thanks to the generosity of the Penrith community. But no-one is celebrating more than the families who are supported by the organisation. For an organisation that relies entirely on donations to continue their work in the community, raising money is very important. Nepean Legacy run fundraisers throughout the year to raise money so that

they can continue to support the widows and children of servicemen who have passed away. “The money that we raise goes to support the widows and children of servicemen around the Nepean district. Without the help of Legacy, these women would not have some of the things that they need,” said Nepean Legatee, Jeff Townsend. “These fundraisers are very, very important to us because we get very little government assistance. All the money that Legacy raises is used for the benefit of these women and children,” he said.

Legacy has held a number of successfu fundraisers for the community this year.

Topsy is a lovely little kitten who was born into care after his mother was rescued from the pound heavily pregnant. Topsy is a happy and energetic kitten who loves playing and being a clown with the other kittens he shares with but quiet and affectionate with humans. He is happy to be handled by adults and children alike and has no troubles with any of my dogs. Topsy is a good eater with both wet and dry food and is completely litter trained. Being that he has a medium length coat it will need a small amount of grooming to keep it healthy and knot free. Because of his friendly and outgoing nature I believe that Topsy would make a wonderful addition to any home where there is lots of love on offer. 12 foods for Christmas

.Here s our list of what meals you can. .get stuck into this festive season. .without feeling guilty....

Anthony Walker: Merry Christmas one and all! Trent Baker: Christmas cheer and gout Rev Lavender: The eternal gift of Jesus Christ

I What will be the fashion in 2013?

t’s one of the only times in the year that you can do it and not feel guilty. There’s no need to feel ashamed or hide away or need to control yourself anymore. Yes! You guessed it, it’s Christmas time, the season where you will splurge and eat as much as you want and justify it. ‘The 12 days of Christmas’ carol lists 12 gifts given in the lead up to Christmas, but this year we are breaking with tradition and giving you 12 healthy foods that you can eat over Christmas. 1. Salmon: Salmon is a lean source of protein rich in good fatty acids, iron, calcium and vitamins. It is better than a red meat because it is leaner and lower in fat. 2. Turkey:

Turkey is rich in protein so it helps growth and muscle repair if needed. It is high in Vitamin B which is essential for the body’s energy production. 3. Carrots: Carrots contain beta-carotene which turns into Vitamin A. Vitamin A is important to maintain excellent eyesight and healthy skin. 4. Dark Chocolate: Nibbling on dark chocolate has been proven to slow digestion so that you feel fuller for longer. Dark chocolate is good to lower blood pressure and prevents the formation of blood clots. 5. Blueberries: Blueberries are rich in Vitamin K and C, which help with absorption of iron and improves the immune system.

The last seven top recommended foods at Christmas time are: • Cranberry source: which is rich in Vitamin C and often drizzled over the ham and turkey. • Red Cabbage: as it is high in calcium. • Roast potatoes: if cooked in vegetable oil they are reasonably high in fibre. • Pudding: most varieties only contain a little bit of fat and have servings of currants and sultanas which count as a fruit serving. Just stay away from the custard! • Whole wheat rolls: can help decrease the risk of heart disease. • Peas: are a super green veggie that is an ample source of fibre. • Pumpkin: is full of carotene to help your eyes and prevent types of cancer.

HOROSCOPES ARIES

MARCH 21 TO APRIL 20

If you want more physical comforts, you may need to enlist the support of loved ones in order to make certain this is possible. You won’t want to be putting yourself out any more than is strictly necessary. Because you can be so loveable it is likely that you can attract all the attention you desire. You can also earn more because of the effort that you are prepared to put into your work.

TAURUS

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

You should be able to show a very pleasant disposition to the world at large, and even if you are busy you can fi nd the time to make those around you happy. They in turn should take significant notice of you and listen very carefully to those Taurean ideas. When it comes to decorating your home for the festive season you instinctively know what looks and feels right.

A mighty craving deserves a mighty fine coffee

GEMINI

APRIL 21 TO MAY 21

Th is is a time when it could be best to simply buckle down and get on with some work. You can achieve a great deal, but not without putting in the necessary effort. A rather self assertive and quite a restless period is now at hand and this comes courtesy of the planet Mercury in your opposition. You would be wise not to lose your temper over issues that really are not worth the bother, and to use a little patience.

CANCER

JUNE 22 TO JULY 22

You are entering into a period when your one on one relationships take paramount importance and you will be doing everything in your power to make your loved ones feel special and cared for. Try not to be too pushy or too sensitive for your own good, instead be more aware of the high regard that others have for you. It should be easy to bring others around to your point of view in a very subtle and deliberate way.

LEO

JULY 23 TO AUGUST 23

If you’ve been feeling under the weather or slightly run down then the planets are going to be providing you with that extra zest to pick yourself up. If you need to see a doctor or a specialist then this is the ideal time to do so, as they will be able to quickly get you back on the road to recovery. Th is is the perfect time to turn to a friend and to laugh away your troubles in their company.

LIBRA

SEPTEMBER 24 TO OCTOBER 23

There are a lot of little things that could seem quite comfortable, but at the same time little niggles, mainly to do with family issues, could arise. Originality is the key to ultimate success and you might also be anxious to get things done in and around your home. The past exerts a powerful influence and many happy memories shall come floating back of your childhood and of times gone by.

SCORPIO

OCTOBER 24 TO NOVEMBER 22

You shall be tackling several different tasks at the same time and with so many planets in your third house you will be very chatty to neighbours. Th is is the ideal time to take a short break or to visit loved ones who live in the country or on the coast. There is a lot of paperwork for you to handle at the moment and you will also be taking several short distance trips around your local neighbourhood.

Whilst this is an actionpacked time, you need to be careful of becoming stressed out by trying to take on too many tasks at the same time, which is why pacing yourself would be a very good idea. KEEPING FIT

by Elisha Stein

by David Stein

Staying healthy during Christmas

W

hen people think about staying healthy throughout Christmas, I’m assuming the majority are referring to eating good food, limiting alcohol and maybe going for a long walk after you have fi nished eating your third Christmas dinner. While all of these are important, I believe just taking the time to enjoy yourself and be happy over the season will keep you well. Trying to juggle the parties, shopping, families and getting work done before the end of the year can leave you so stressed that the true meaning of Christmas is overlooked. I know how easily this happens. Christmas should be about loved ones and gratitude for life. The world we live in today is very focused on material things like cars, jewellery, fashion and iPads, and we are continually told by society that if we give these ‘things’ to our friends and family and receive it back, then we will have a great Christmas and be happy. We tend to focus on what we need at this time of year, not on what we already have. That even sounds depressing! Just being grateful shifts your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present. Research has shown that amazing life improvements can stem from just being thankful and putting a smile on your face. It will make you feel happier, be more resilient, it

Focus on pleasure not pain

strengthens relationships, improves your physical health and reduces stress. Wouldn’t that be the best present of all! Showing and receiving love from your partner and family makes us stronger with health gains that range from faster healing to living longer. Positive thoughts and feelings promote better sleep and we all know how beneficial sleep is in keeping us healthy. Feeling love has been shown to protect from cardiovascular disease, helps to fight cancer, and lifts your mood by altering serotonin levels in your brain and even releasing hormones that create that warm, nurturing mood. So this Christmas fi nd gratitude in the festivities, appreciate and treasure the innocence and excitement shown by your children, be aware of everything in your life that already brings you joy and smile and spread the Christmas cheer. Live your life with kindness and love in your heart. Your body and mind will thank you for it and you will always have a Merry Christmas!

W

ell its time to go over the old year and start thinking about the new one. Whatever happened this year, with your fitness goals, work or family ones, know that the next year comes like a blank sheet of paper. Fill it up as you really want to, don’t let old habits get you or put down things you don’t actually want to do. There is nothing magic about the New Year itself, but sitting down and really putting your goals on paper and a plan on how to get them can be life changing. Nietzsche said: “He who has a strong enough why can bear almost any how”. I remember reading that mentioned in Victor Frankls book on how how he survived through the horrors of a concentration camp. So it has certainly been tested and strong enough to even get you through losing five kilograms! Th ink of why you want the goals you’re writing down. Making an extra $100 a week is pretty unmotivating itself but if I focus on the holiday to the beach I can afford to take my family on and spend quality time with them, then I really start thinking of ways to do it. Running a 5km race isn’t overly exciting on its own but if I focus on how I feel when I cross the line and the example I set to others it’s is a whole lot easier to get my shoes on for the

training run. Th is also means I stay consistent to my goals, if getting that extra money means I’m home from work a couple hours later everyday and miss putting my kids to bed then its not really consistent with my goal of spending more time with the family! Find out why you want something then ask how you can get it and even have fun doing it. Humans instinctually move away from pain and towards pleasure. They are the two main motivators in life. Use them to your advantage. Forcing yourself to avoid christmas pudding is pain. Getting up at 5am for a run you hate is pain. These goals will not last long term. Sharing a small sized dessert with the family is pleasure, playing a game outside with the kids is pleasure. Th is is a lot more sustainable. Enjoy the break! See you next year!

In the holiday season it is almost an unspoken rule that unlimited eating, partial workouts and shopping trips take place of your regular exercise routine. This year you have a choice. Follow Connect Fitness’s easy rules to keep up your f tness during the holidays and you will stay active and healthy. 1. Choose one treat – You cannot deny your body the chance to indulge. When arriving at a party choose one treat. Pick something you can only treat yourself with during the holidays and make it good. 2. Control your drinking – Alcohol is dehydrating and an easy way to add more calories onto your daily intake. Drink water throughout the day to maintain hydration and have a glass of water for every alcoholic drink you consume. 3. Eat small meals during the day – Snack on healthy foods like fruit and nuts throughout the day to prevent over eating at the buffet. 4. Eat more vegetables with your meal – Have a larger serve of vegetables instead of rice, bread or stuffng and skip the gravy and dressings. This will help to stop those extra calories being consumed. 5. Exercise and reward yourself – Stay motivated by having an incentive. If you fall off the wagon, don’t beat yourself up. Get back on without missing another second.

FASHION FIXATION

What will 2013 bring?

Thanking you

A

nother year is almost gone and what a year of fashion it was. Like any year, 2012 saw trends come and go; some not quite as good as others, but all in all, the fashions that hit our stores and our streets were something to be remembered and who knows, they may make a come back next year. Of all the styles, trends and colour schemes that made an appearance in our shops, there were a few that stood out as the more popular and wearable fashions. One of the biggest trends of the year would have to be coloured denim; it was one of those looks that really took off. From the moment that coloured denim hit our stores in the lead-up to winter right up until this very day, people are still shopping for and buying coloured denim. Whether the colour is bold, washed out or barely there, each item of clothing was just as popular as the rest. Depending on the season, men and women were seen in bright jeans or fluoro shorts, pastel cut off ’s or dark vests. Coloured denim may have been one of the biggest trends of the year but there wasn’t a print that could beat the floral prints of spring. There were floral dresses in abundance, flowing floral skirts and something a little different was the floral printed jeans and shorts that gave an otherwise casual, non-descript look a real feminine feel. Whilst the feminine look was in reign, there was then the comeback of fluoro. For me, this was an unexpected comeback however, combining neon with pastel colours had a very different effect than it did back in the 90’s. Fluoro was no longer seen as the ‘party colours’ but with the pastel tones, was something that you could wear out to lunch or to the shops. Of all the styles though, my favourite would have to be tribal. There was something about the gold embellishments and the warm earthy tones that made me love it so much. 2012 proved to be a great year in the fashion world and I can’t help but wonder what is in store for us next year…

I

just wanted to wish my customers, staff, colleagues, business associates and of course the broader Penrith community a safe and Merry Christmas. At this time of the year it’s hard not to be a bit sentimental and think about all the things I’m grateful for. As the owner of BOQ Penrith I’ve seen fi rst-hand just how many people are involved in supporting a small business, and believe me it takes a small army! For a start, it has taken daily commitment from my staff to continually provide the best customer service experience possible. I have a very enthusiastic team and we all work very closely with customers to help them achieve their fi nancial and personal goals. Seeing my customers achieve their goals has become one of the most rewarding parts about the work I do. I get to see the role that I play in helping businesses expand, people achieve the dream of home ownership, and others successfully plan for their retirement. I get to see the positive contribution I’m making to the Penrith community. And this is what gets me out of bed in the morning, knowing we’re making a real difference. Owning the business has given me the opportunity to have regular contact with my customers and offer personalised service which has lead to many of my customers becoming friends over the years. And this is what lies at the heart of my business – the people and relationships I’ve built with customers and colleagues. You have all played a role in my success, and because of you I have this opportunity to reflect on the year that was and what’s still to come. You’re the ones who have gotten us where we are today so for that I give you my deepest thanks for your ongoing support. I wish you and your families a safe and Merry Christmas and I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year.

Christmas cheer and gout

T

his is the silly season isn’t it? We see people doing all sorts of things that are out of character, spending too much money on presents, eating too much and drinking too much. The fun often out weights the price we pay for over celebrating, however, after Christmas podiatrists tend to see a huge spike in gout. Gout is a very painful condition that results from increased uric acid levels in the blood stream. Th is inflammatory form of arthritis causes a joint to become swollen, hot and red and usually presents in the fi rst metatarsophalangeal joint (ball of you big toe). Gout can be caused through a few different avenues with a significant correlation to increased alcohol intake. There are certain foods that are high in purine that can also contribute, however alcohol consumption is the clear winner at this time of year. It goes without saying that if you have a part of your body, which is hot, red and swollen that you should visit a GP as soon as possible. So in the case of a gout outbreak it is very important to see your doctor for treatment. There are medications available that will reduce the pain and symptoms rapidly. I have heard patients describe the pain as “like razor blades are stuck in the joint”. So there is no mistaking the presentation, especially if you know you have over indulged.

If you are stuck where you cannot get to a doctor try drinking water instead of any more Christmas cheer, rest, elevate your affected foot and keep footwear off. Gout can resolve in time however it can cause irreversible damage to the affected joint and create a chronic arthritis in the area. Therefore it’s very important to seek treatment.

New sunscreen regulations

N

ew regulations relating to the rating of sunscreens means you can now get greater skin protection from the sun’s harmful rays. Previously, the highest protection sunscreens available in Australia had a rating of SPF 30+. From November 10, 2012, sunscreens with an SPF of 50+ can be supplied in Australia. SPF 50+ sunscreens provide better protection from sunburn and long term skin damage than SPF 30+. In fact, SPF 50+ will give up to 50 per cent more protection sun protection than SPF 30+. So what does SPF mean and why is a higher rating better? SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. The SPF rating is literally how much sun protection your skin has compared to wearing no sunscreen at all. For example, if without sunscreen your skin will burn after one minute exposure to the sun, then wearing SPF 50+ means it will take 50 minutes for your skin to burn. While you do get much greater protection using SPF 50+, you still need to apply it every two hours to get maximum sun protection. As many people know, sunscreen allows much less UVA radiation, which is largely responsible for melanomas and skin cancer, to pass through a layer of sunscreen. The higher the SPF rating

is, the better the sunscreen protects your skin. While these regulations are great news, you may have difficulty fi nding the higher rated SPF 50+ products. Th is is because some sunscreen brands have actually been rated SPF 50+ for a while but due to the old regulations have only been labelled as SPF 30+. Rather than pull these products off the shelf, many brands are allowing these to sell before releasing the 50+ labelled sunscreens next year. For example, the popular ‘Sunsense’ range of products, which you can only fi nd in pharmacies, all meet the SPF 50+ regulations and have for some time. However, the current stock is labelled as SPF 30+ and the labelling will change to 50+ over time. If you would like the higher rated sunscreens but can’t fi nd them, speak with your pharmacist who will be able to show you the products that are SPF 50+ but may not be labelled so. Finally, while SPF 50+ is great protection against the harsh Australian sun, sunscreen alone is not enough. Being ‘sun smart’ also includes wearing a hat, covering up with appropriate clothing and seeking out shade where possible. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone!

um! Dad! The batteries are flat! The game is broken! There’s no more chocolate! Ever noticed how at Christmas it doesn’t take long for something to break or run out? That special toy that took days to fi nd has broken down or a part has fallen off, never to be seen again. Then there’s the gifts we simply grow tired of and quietly retire to the cupboard. There’s the gifts we never use or the DVD we’ve watched over and over again. What about a gift that lasts? A gift that does not wear out? One of the best known and most loved verses of the Bible speaks directly to this. In the New Testament Gospel of John we fi nd Jesus saying these wonderful words: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life”. What a gift! Eternal life! Life lived in all its fullness. Being able to know and enjoy God for all eternity. How does this happen? How can you have this gift? You can have this life by believing Jesus and trusting his promises and words to us. You can know real life by committing your life to Jesus, humbly depending on him and looking to him for direction and guidance in life. Jesus does not wear out or let us down or pass a “use by date”, nor does he become irrelevant. He fi lls us with peace, hope and joy. Have a Happy Christmas and do not

miss out on enjoying Jesus, “The Forever Gift”.

end Lease’s Ropes Crossing community continues to create demand in the market after being recognised as the best performing suburb in Sydney by Residex. And it’s no wonder, the benefits of this ideal location are in the facilities that have already been delivered. With the already operating town centre including Coles shopping centre, specialty retail, primary school and village oval and tennis courts, it is easy to see why Ropes Crossing has such a strong community environment with nearly 2,000 residents. Ropes Crossing is also proving to be a smart investment opportunity, with the median weekly rental price for a three bedroom house at $470, resulting in an average gross rental yield of six per cent. After selling over 50 lots in the last 2 months it is clear the demand for new homes is obviously high in the current market. Ropes Crossing continues to enjoy great success with home buyers, reporting a significant increase in fi rst home buyer activity, and now the larger lots in Brookwood and Woodlands present an attractive offering for second home buyers. Builders are also making the move to Ropes Crossing even easier providing customers the option of a 5% deposit with no more to pay until completion. These fi xed price packages are attracting a high volume of enquiry with customers ultimately keen for the building process to be as simple and pain free as possible. Edgewater Homes, Eden Brae Homes, Jandson Homes and Ancon Homes are all providing this buying option with Home and Land Packages priced from $389,990 for a 3 bedroom single garage home and $429,990 for a 4 bedroom double garage home with packages up to $495,000. Arthur Ilias, Ropes Crossing Project Director explained the success of Ropes Crossing and why residents were choosing to move into the local area. “Buyers are not only looking for an opportunity to buy their dream home in a community that enhances their lifestyle, they are looking for a place to invest their money wisely. Ropes Crossing has been recognised by Residex as the best performing suburb in Sydney in terms of median capital growth over the past 12 months”. The community is located close to key infrastructure including transport, and is the ideal choice for many looking to buy. The Westbus bus service to St Mary’s train station is available to the local area which delivers Ropes Crossing residents to Sydney’s CBD within an hour. Access to the M4, M7 & Great Western Highway is also available making car travel quick & major shopping centres only a short drive away. When completed the project which covers 132ha is expected to contain up to 2,200 homes and 16 parks playgrounds connected by 25 kilometers of walking and cycling paths. Patti and Melinda are fun, playful and mummy’s-girls kittens offering plenty of kitty entertainment! Patti is a real darling love-bug and Melinda is affectionate although more independent, seeking the love when playtime is finished. She has a busy kitty agenda! These little sisters are very dear to Barnville, being the only two surviving kitties of a litter of 5 from a rescue pound mum, Mandy, who is also looking for a home.

is a local not-for-profit cat welfare group.

Gilbert (grey) is a soft, floppy, happy, playful, purry little mummy’s-boy who just loves cuddles and smooches. Don’t expect to get much done on the computer when he’s around, as you’ll not resist his little face on your lap begging for pats : ) Rocky is a real characteristic little buddy, very playful and is always making cute little noises like he’s got a running commentary of his life! He’s got gorgeous big eyes like Puss in Boots in Shrek : )

With funds permitting, we help save and re-home cats & kittens on death row at shelters in Western Sydney. They are then fully vetted and cared for until compatible, loving homes are found. We have many happy, healthy cats & kittens looking for their forever homes. The more we re-home, the more we can save.

Tyre health: Road safety begins before you leave

ph: 4732 1120

yre manufacturer Kumho has urged motorists to take some simple precautions ahead of the year’s busiest period on our roads by checking the condition of their car tyres before hitting the roads. Simple factors such as worn tyres, incorrect pressures and poor wheel alignment not only contribute to how a car handles and stops but also leads to an increase in fuel consumption, potentially costing motorists more money as well as risking lives. David Basha, national marketing and training manager at Kumho Tyres

Australia, said a tyre health check only takes a few minutes and is as important as fi lling the car up with fuel. “There are always safety messages about fatigue, drink driving and speeding around this time of year and rightly so, but road safety begins before you even leave home,” he said. “Every motorist should carry out simple tyre checks regularly but it is even more important before a long, hot summer holiday drive.” Motorists should carry out two simple checks before heading away this festive season – tyre pressure and tread depth.

Kids Under Cover’s vision is: “for all young people to have the opportunity to reach their full potential”. The charity works to prevent youth

To further support the initiative, in conjunction with major sponsor Manheim Auctions, Kids Under Cover has developed the ‘Donate Your Car’ program, which encourages Aussies to hand over their unwanted old or used cars to the charity. 100 per cent of the sale of the donated vehicles goes directly toward preventing youth homelessness. Partners: Athletes get access to new sports medicine clinic

Penrith Panthers players visited Westmead Children’s Hospital last week.

Special visit: Panthers come ‘bearing’ gifts for sick kids

E

NATHAN TAYLOR

ight Penrith Panthers stars helped brighten the day of some sick kids last week when they visited Westmead Children’s Hospital to spread some much-needed Christmas cheer. Blake Austin, Cameron Ciraldo, Ethan Cook, Jake Grace, Adam Docker, Nathan Smith, Mosese Pangai and Sam Anderson joined the team from Wishing Hearts to tour the wards and hand out 300 very special Teddy bears.

Wishing Hearts is a charity that raises funds to support children with congenital heart disease but last Thursday’s visit saw the bears handed out to a wide range of patients in the hospital. The players spent two hours touring the wards and saw fi rst hand how giving back makes a significant difference. Many commented on how much they enjoyed seeing the young faces smile. “It was an intense but an incredible experience,” rising star, Jack Grace said. “Seeing tiny kids smiling through their pain makes you realise how lucky you are.”

The Western Sydney Sports Medicine Centre and Academy of Sport have partnered.

T

he athletes of the Western Sydney Academy of Sport will benefit from a new partnership between the Academy and the Western Sydney Sports Medicine Centre. The newly opened sports medicine centre in York Road, Penrith, was established with a view to providing the people of western Sydney with their very own innovative, purpose built facility facilitating multiple medical disciplines in one accessible location. Academy CEO Martin Bullock said that: “having the Western Sydney Sports Medicine Centre come on board as an

Academy partner across our programs is tremendous support for our young athletes and a great endorsement for our work.” “Being able to provide our athletes with access to specialised medical services all under the one roof will greatly assist in their preparation and recovery capacity.” Chris Scanlon from the medical centre is very pleased to be providing support to some of the region’s best young athletes at the Academy. They provide a range of sports medicine services including podiatry, chiropractic, exercise physiology and physiotherapy.

Harness Racing The Minchinbury Fruit Markets represented by the Gauci Family were sponsors at our last Thursday night’s Harness Racing at the Paceway. The main race, The Minchinbury Fruit Markets Pace, went to Western Spirit at odds of $3.40 driven by young Bathurst driver Mitch Turnbull, a son of noted trainer Steve Turnbull. The fi rst event was taken out by Outrageous Fortune at $3.00. Taken to the lead from barrier one by Glen McEllhinney he was always in control. The one to watch from this race was McCardles Chance. Michael Muscat drove his fi rst of a winning double in race two with ex-Kiwi Uweehumma at odds of $1.80, making it two in a row since coming from the shaky isles. Im Blue Double Dee went within tenth of a second of breaking the track record in the third and was the fi rst of a double for

Lorraine Pozza Amanda Turnbull, getting home as favourite at $2.80. Usane Flash ($2.00) completed Amanda’s double in the fourth, just beating Western Destroyer after being three wide on the home turn. Michael Muscat completed his double with Munroe at odds of $2.60 in race six when he was able to lead all the way for a comfortable win. Gypsy Babe ($2.80) continued the winning run of favourites by scoring in the seventh with driver Gavin Fitzpatrick settling midfield and coming with a late burst to score from Shootforthestarzzzzz (another one to watch). The eighth saw Jarrid Alchin win with another favourite, Franco Talon, at $1.30 and the ninth went to Northview Cardle ($3.00) with driver Blake Fitzpatrick storming home when it counted.

The ‘Flip Out’ trampoline has 52 mats and will hold upto 80 kids at any one time.

Grade Cricket 1st Grade: Penrith won the toss and batted fi rst against Sutherland at Howell oval. Openers Shannon Finemore 38 and Luke Morrissey 59 gave the home side a very good start to the innings. However with the dismissal of Finemmore a batting collapse resulted in six quick wickets. In reply Sutherland were 2 for 2 and 4 for 101. A good innings by Michael Houston with 89 not out with Sutherland 7 for 184 to Penrith’s 183 enabled Cronulla to win a very tight match. 2nd Grade: Penrith batted second at Caringbah oval and were dismissed for 135. Ben Betros continued his good form to score 62, Sutherland had scored 198. Ben followed up his good batting and had the great bowling figures of 5 for 31. He was well supported by Michael Collins 3 for 43 and Kurt Niess with 2 for 35. 3rd Grade: Penrith were dismissed for 202,

Century Steve Pacole top-scored with a very good innings of 58. He was well supported by Matthew Newton and Danny Dent. Greg Venables with 3 for 28 and Danny Dent for 3 for 30 were the picket of the bowlers. Penrith thirds have won their last four matches. 4th Grade: Sutherland batted fi rst and scored 6 for 237, the fi rst bowler Peter Gott with 2 for 50 and Lachlan Comp with 2 for 53 were the best of the bowlers. Penrith in reply were dismissed for 168, Adam Bawiss 32 and Jacob New 27 treaded very hard with the bat. 5th Grade: Penrith batted fi rst and after an early collapse recovered to score 163 at Range oval. Peter Gregerson played a magnificent innings in scoring 60, he was well supported by Michael Sparks with 29. In reply Sutherland were dismissed for 60. Peter Gregerson with 4 for 24 had a good match.

Jump into this: First mega trampoline is here in Penrith

A

NATHAN TAYLOR

ustralia’s fi rst and largest trampoline arena is set to touch down in Penrith this weekend, just in time for the holidays. Forget your rusty, old backyard trampoline, the 600 square metre ‘Flip Out’ is a trampoliner’s heaven. From this Saturday, December 22, the Flip Out trampoline arena will be located outside Penrith Panthers in the Aqua Golf carpark for the next six weeks before it relocates to its permanent home at the AMF Bowling

complex in 2013. CEO of Flip Out, Brent Grundy, said the mega trampoline arena has the ability to entertain anyone for hours. “Up to 80 kids can bounce on the Flip Out trampoline at any one time,” he said. “It will provide people with plenty of fun in the sun and is suitable for people of all ages.” According to Mr Grundy, the Flip Out arena took two years to plan and construct, and features a whopping 6,000 springs and 52 trampoline mats. Penrith will be the fi rst place in Australia to enjoy what Flip Out has to offer. 1078WWD1683

James Segeyaro says he’ll live up to his reputation as Penrith’s best buy for 2013

J

NATHAN TAYLOR

ames Segeyaro has been voted in numerous rugby league fan polls as Penrith’s number one buy for 2013, and the former North Queensland hooker declares he’s going to do whatever he can to live up to that tag. “It’s a good feeling that the fans can’t wait to have me, I can’t wait to get out there. I’ll be like the black panther – I reckon I’ll look good in black,” Segeyaro said. “But you’ve also got blokes like Sika Manu and Dean Whare who are coming in who have also been in very successful teams, but I’ll take that tag for sure.” The Papua New Guinean-born excitement machine played 33 games, mostly coming off the bench, in his two seasons with the North Queensland Cowboys. Segeyaro said joining Penrith from the Townsville-based club was the best career decision he’s ever made. “I’m loving the new change and the new club, I’m fitting in really well with the boys and I couldn’t be happier,” he said. “Th is club looks like it’s going forward and that’s what my manager and I talked about before coming here. I wanted to go somewhere where I could establish myself as a fi rst-grader and I couldn’t be happier. Th is was probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my career.” One dilemma for Panthers coach Ivan Cleary is where to play Segeyaro but it’s a predicament that has Panthers fans

Sport

“I’ll be like the black Panther”

salivating. Cleary has two hookers – one experienced and one on the rise – who will do battle for the hotly contested number nine jumper. “I reckon the battle between Kevvy (Kingston) and I is going to be a good one but him and I are very different players,” Segeyaro said. “He’ll obviously start and I’ll come in, similar to how Aaron Payne and I worked

at the Cowboys. Hopefully I’ll get to stay on the field a bit more and play more of a utility role. “It’s good, friendly competition and that’s what you need. There’s plenty of competition for spots in the side already – battle for centres, wingers and secondrowers – just like with every pre-season everyone wants to gun for that round one spot.”

After playing outside the world’s best half in Johnathan Thurston for the majority of his young career, the 22-yearold said he can’t wait to hit the field and learn from some of his newest teammates. “I’m really excited about playing with Jenko (Michael Jennings), Walshy (Luke Walsh), Wes (Naiqama) and Newto (Clint Newton) – blokes who can make something out nothing,” he said.

You’ll be left in their wake... Three Ripples swimmers are cleaning up the competition in open water races NATHAN TAYLOR

M

ost people would get tired after swimming just one lap of a public pool, that’s what makes these three young male swimmers so extraordinary. Matt Robinson, 16, Nathan Robinson, 13, and Jarred Wright, 13, are a local teenage trio of open water long distance swimmers. Swimming laps of their heated training facility at Ripples is a piece of cake for these high school boys because these three are used competing in cold rivers and lakes – where sea life often brushes passed – over distances as far as five kilometres. Each of the boys train up to 10 times per week both in the morning and afternoon to keep fitness and endurance levels high. All three recently placed very well at a State open water swimming event at the Sydney International Regatta Centre. The oldest of the trio, 16-year-old Matt, fi nished second in his age group, swimming the five kilometre course in a time of 58 minutes and three seconds. Matt said he preferred long distance open water swimming over traditional lap swimming. “I did my fi rst open water race when I was 13 and loved it,” he said. “I enjoy this form of swimming because I’m not too good at sprinting and I just love endurance swimming.” His younger brother Nathan is also one of the best swimmers in NSW in his age group, in fact, he is the best. beat his friend at an event. Jarred recently fi nished third at the State titles and hopes to have a bright future in the sport. “I prefer open water swimming because I don’t like turns and sprinting in a normal pool. My mission is to fi rst beat Nathan

recently placed fi rst in his age group over five kilometres at the State titles. “I just love distance swimming, I train nine times a week,” Nathan said. Chasing Nathan’s tail is fellow 13-yearold, Jarred, who’s determined to one day

at State, then place on the podium at Nationals before hopefully getting to the Olympics,” Jarred said. Next stop for the trio is the open water swimming Nationals in Newcastle this February.

The Western Sydney Wanderers National Youth League season is going from bad to horrible after yet another hefty defeat, this time at the hands of the Perth Glory, 5–1. Perth and Western Sydney went into the match third and second from the bottom on the standings respectively but the Glory made the gulf between the sides look far greater than just one position. The Wanderers still remain in second last place (ninth) on the NYL table. The news wasn’t so good for the Wanderers W-League side either after they narrowly lost to the Brisbane Roar 2–1 at Campbelltown Stadium. Momentary lapses in defence cost the Wanderers dearly as the home side fell two goals in arrears by the midway point of the fi rst half. The Wanderers remain in sixth position on the W-League table.

estern Sydney Wanderers boss Lyall Gorman has reassured supporters that A-League games involving his club are safe despite three fans being arrested last Saturday night for letting off illegal flares. Speaking with the Weekender, Mr Gorman stressed that Saturday evening’s incident during the Wanderers clash with Sydney FC was an isolated one and not indicative of a poor club culture. “There were three hooligans in a venue of 27,000 people whose behaviour was impeccable and who created an awesome atmosphere on the night,” he said. “There was no violence in the venue and it was just a super night for families, corporates and everyone in the ground.” After reviewing CCTV footage, police arrested three Wanderers supporters – two men aged 21 and 28, and a 16-year-old boy – for allegedly igniting and throwing flares onto the playing pitch. Mr Gorman said the club has an “absolute

express anti-social behaviour and will fi nd ways to do it in any area,” he said. “We don’t condone the use of flares in any shape or form, but at the same time let’s not blow it out of proportion where we try to hurt the image of what was a wonderful night.”
