T
he Penrith sporting community will get a huge boost no matter which party comes into power on September 7 after both the Labor and Liberal Lindsay candidates announced two big election commitments this week. On Tuesday, Labor’s David Bradbury and Federal Sports Minister, Senator Don Farrell, announced that a re-elected Labor Government will provide $1.5 million to Penrith Council for the construction of a new all-weather athletics track in the Penrith region. Senator Farrell said Mr Bradbury had been lobbying hard for some time to secure funding for this new sporting facility in the Penrith area. “Th is new facility would be available for all local athletics groups and schools in the Penrith area,” he said. Mr Bradbury added that local athletics groups have been advocating for an all-weather track in the Penrith area for many years. “Currently there are only grass tracks available in the local area,” he said. “An all-weather track will allow our local athletics clubs to compete in all conditions, as well as provide our local community with a track to hold major regional and State athletics events.”
Child porn case A 42-year-old school teacher from Emu Plains has appeared briefly in court after police allegedly found child pornography material in his home earlier this month. Detectives from the Sex Crime Squad’s Child Exploitation Internet Unit searched the home of Craig Morphett in the early hours of Wednesday, August 7. Mr Morphett was arrested at the premises and police seized a number of items, including computer equipment, electronic storage devices and DVDs, for forensic examination. He was charged with ‘use a carriage service to access child pornography’ and ‘possess child abuse material’. Mr Morphett appeared briefly in Penrith Local Court on Wednesday. According to 2GB police reporter Tiffin y Genders, supporters of Mr Morphett yelled abuse at the media outside court.
