Oh, What a Fun

Year It’s Been!

Fair Oaks, this is our 4th issue! We’re thrilled to reach this milestone and hope you’ve found joy in what we’re bringing to our community. With each issue, thanks to your feedback and ideas, we learn more and shape the magazine to do more and be more for you — our local audience. Our mission has always been to create a guide that balances beautiful form with useful function.

Our recent photo shoot with Hair Moxie Salon and Biker Bar inspired us to think about another balance: looking good and feeling good. With a new look and a new ride this season, you can achieve both!

This issue is also special because it marks a new chapter in our evolution: we’ve expanded our editorial side. We’re excited to bring you fun, interesting and topical stories, including a Q&A with the firefighters of Metro Fire Station 31 in Fair Oaks and an interview with Fair Oaks Recreation & Park District Administrator Mike Aho on the latest updates to the park complex in the heart of the Village. We aim to share stories that people care about, learn from, and enjoy.

They say you can’t judge a book by its cover, but we respectfully disagree — inside and out, we strive to create something of value. As we turn the page on our final issue of 2024, we hope you love the cover and make the most of the many offers from local businesses inside. Creating something special from front to back is our daily joy, and we hope you love everything we’ve put into it!

Have a wonderful holiday season, and get ready for the amazing things to come in 2025!

A Visit with Fair Oaks’ Heroes

Metro Fire Station 31 Answers Our Burning Questions.

AVERAGE ANNUAL CALLS?

2,500-3,000

On the morning we visited Station 31 in the Village, Engineer Keith Albertson, Firefighter Ian Duncan and Paramedic Dat Pham were just starting their 48-hour shift. Here are the burning questions of the day.

BUSIEST TIME OF THE DAY?

It’s unpredictable. Sometimes, they go non-stop. On the morning we were there not a single call came in.

MOST COMMON TYPE OF CALL?

Around 80% of calls are for medical help and many come in late at night.

BEST THING ABOUT FAIR OAKS?

The unique homes and structures and the very friendly community members who love to wave and smile at them.

UNIQUE TO THE STATION?

It’s home to Foam 31, a specialized foam unit for large flammable or combustible liquid fires such as an aircraft fire. They also stock life jackets for anyone who needs one.

BEST COOK IN THE HO

Paramedic Dat Pham when he cooks, but his mom’s egg rolls are well-loved and requested among the crew.

The Station, built in 1949 under the Fair Oaks Fire Department District.

WHO’D WIN IN A SOFTBALL GAME VS. SAC SHERIFF?

Metro Fire, of course. In fact, they proved it by taking first at the annual U.S. Police and Fire Championship games in San Diego.

THEY GROCERY SHOP AT?

Since they pay for food out of their own pocket, they get creative budgeting for meals and often stop at Costco before a shift. If shopping at a local store on shift, you may see them abandon groceries when a call comes in. The food is not forgotten, they come back for the groceries after the call.

BEST CHICKEN RESCUE STORY?

None! Surprisingly, more duck families need rescuing from storm drains and swimming pools, along with a sprinkling of cat-up-a-tree rescue calls.

MOST REWARDING CALL?

Recently, they responded to a call for a man who collapsed in front of his wife after returning home from a run. A week later, the couple came to the station to thank the crew for saving him. He was up and walking again and, understandably, it was very emotional for everyone involved.

NOT-SO-HOT TIP FOR THE HOLIDAYS?

As we head into the holidays, stay fire-safe by using LED candles instead of traditional candles, paying attention while cooking and checking your smoke alarms each month.

SAVE THE DATE FOR FIRE CAMP!

Station 21 in Citrus Heights hosts an annual weeklong summer camp for kids to teach fire, water safety and fire service traditions. One camp attendee went on to save a life with the CPR he learned at camp.

Behind the Curtain

A VILLAGE PARK UPDATE WITH FAIR OAKS RECREATION & PARK DISTRICT ADMINISTRATOR MIKE

e’re all ready for the Village project to be done. So, when Fair Oaks Recreation & Park District Administrator Mike Aho, who has been overseeing the entire Village project, enthusiastically agreed to talk to us about how things are going during a guided behind-the-scenes tour, our questions had to be ready.

At the top of our list was one big question: “When will this be finished?”

After meeting with Aho in October, we thought, “No wonder it’s been taking so long!” and had a skip in our step about what’s to come.

So When Will it Be Finished?

With a slight hesitation, Aho tells us that while the most recent tentative open date shared with the community was Jan. 28, that changed again. New challenges with the road surrounding the site have come up, which will likely push the completion date to the end of March.

Why is it Taking So Long?

It’s daunting to describe this massive project’s complexities. The easiest way to sum it up is that Fair Oaks is a historical town. While the historic charm makes it lovable, this fact has required many complex solutions to preserve the historical integrity while bringing the facilities up to modern needs and standards.

It can be easy to forget that the structures and spaces being redeveloped were built in the early-to-mid 1900s when accessibility, construction, and safety standards weren’t on anyone’s radar. As construction crews have moved into different project

The Amphitheater under construction.
Mike Aho on the Clubhouse balcony.

phases and gone deeper into the ground, one “adventure” after another has popped up. “[We] didn’t know how broken the toy was,” Aho says. It’s these slowdowns that have kept the completion date a moving target.

Infrastructure of Yesteryear

When the road was initially laid, Aho says, “You could pour some asphalt on top of dirt and call it a day.” Things like sloping, drainage, and traffic were taken for granted until they went awry. Now, they have to be remedied.

Once these are fixed, it’s not as easy as picking any old day to get the surrounding road paved. Warm weather is crucial for curing asphalt, so paving is on hold until conditions improve.

Without the paved road, there’s no way to grant access or obtain the certificate of occupancy (CO), which finalizes the project’s readiness. Since all areas (Park, Clubhouse, Amphitheater) are considered one unit for permits, they must all be complete for a CO, ruling out phased openings. Additional hurdles included unexpected foundation issues at the Clubhouse, where crews uncovered a small lake beneath boulders, requiring a deeper drainage project. They also faced legal complications consolidating land parcels, as the legal owner couldn’t be tracked down.

Suffice it to say, a lot has been happening behind that chain-link fence we’ve all been longingly staring at. With a clearer picture of just how tricky this process has been, we asked Aho why it will all be worth it once the fence comes down.

In Through the Front Door

Thoughtful consideration of how future generations will use and maintain the space is central to the project, but so is the enjoyment of those patiently waiting for it now.

“We did it right. It’s not on a shoestring.”

One of the project’s biggest goals is to modernize the park, structures, and surrounding

pathways so they are accessible in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

“We want everybody to come in the front door,” Aho says. It’s a beautiful sentiment that is both literal and metaphorical.

What We’re Excited About

Aho painted a picture of all the great things we can look forward to in each aspect of the project.

1. Village Park Playground

At the site, new equipment sits in crates. Aho, smiling, described what’s to come as a “really, really cool playground” — an ode to simpler times, but now with added safety and accessibility. Look forward to a 25-foot climbing tower, rope bridge, swing sets, tumble hill, and concrete slide.

15

“This space is still a piece of clay for us, but we’re dreaming.”
The Amphitheater stage area and, with hanger doors closed, the Black Box theater space.

2. Village Park

While showing us all of the ways Village Park is coming back, Aho gets especially jazzed about Concerts in the Park, and for good reason. In October, it was announced the District was awarded $22K for our beloved summer concert series.

3. Community Clubhouse

Standing in front of the Clubhouse entrance and looking out, Aho reflects on the possibilities. “I like to hang out here a little bit because it makes me feel good. You look down here, and you can envision it. It’s got that grand entrance,” he says.

As Fair Oaks’ go-to social gathering place for decades, he talks about how all the new features and improvements will re-secure this icon as a primary event space.

4. Performing Arts Center

The new Fair Oaks Performing Arts Center & Veterans Memorial Amphitheatre, the project’s crown jewel, boasts massive motorized airplane hangar doors that, while open, become the amphitheater. Even in its incomplete form, it exudes elegance and walking through the space is exhilarating.

With the hanger doors closed, the inside space transforms into a black box theater for an intimate experience for up to 200 people.

The space’s versatility and comfort are evident with individual lighted seats and cupholders. For concerts, two rows of seats can be removed for dancing. Theater remains central, with the Fair Oaks Theater Festival being the Center’s first contract.

5. Plaza Stage

As we exit the Performing Arts Center and walk out into the Plaza, Aho’s eyes light up while daydreaming about what he has dubbed “the Village’s front yard,” consisting of a small acoustic stage and the dreamy tree-lined Plaza in front of it.

With plans for market lights strung overhead, tabletop seating that can be moved depending on the size of your group and plenty of blanket space on a grass system that will be able to withstand lots of foot traffic for years to come, it’s easy to imagine a perfect Fair Oaks evening here.

The Big Picture

Aho acknowledges businesses’ concerns about traffic but believes the benefits of drawing people in during slower times outweigh the risk of overcrowding. “Maybe we are going to get a little busier, but we’re not going to get so busy that we’re all fighting for the same resources.”

The plan focuses on quality experiences for smaller crowds rather than numerous big events. Aho says, “It feels better with 300 people instead of 3,000. You feel like you’re part of the community and have that great feeling.”

The Home Stretch

So what’s been Aho’s favorite part about overseeing this massive project? “The team. And I include the community in the team,” he says, acknowledging the frustrations over the past five years. He knows it’s hard to stay on the edge of your seat, but the sustained excitement hasn’t gone unnoticed.

So when can we experience these exciting things? Well, hold on to your hats, “when it gets to this place, you know you’re in the home stretch,” Aho says.

The stage has been set and we’re excited about the next act!
