About We Draman Group
Founded in 1993 as a non-profit making theatre company, and financially supported by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council since 2011. We Draman Group is built upon the belief that “People who share the same passion for theatre can bridge all their differences and create greater arts together”. We have been devoted in creating an all-encompassing creative platform so as to enable the collaboration of different artists and theatre workers for the creation and promotion of theatrical art in Hong Kong.
In 2009, one of the Group’s founders, Mr. Tang Wai Kit who has over 20 years of theatre experience in U.K., France, Korea, and Hong Kong, was appointed Artistic Director. He set a new artistic direction for the Group: all our plays must attempt to explore the different facets of humanity, even it will be dark and controversial. The script should be contemplative and thought-provoking, while the artistic style be adaptive to the essence of the play yet relevant to the local culture. Staying true to this direction, we performed Roberto Zucco, These Childish Things (re-run), Betrayal, Alive in the Montuary (a play by HK playwright Chong Mui Ngam). Feedback was very positive from both local audience and the theatre sector.
In 2019, We Draman Group brought their contemporary mime performance Life. in Hong Kong to the Edinburgh Fringe, where the show, co-created by the performers, reflected on survival in Hong Kong’s fast-paced and densely populated city in a delightful and humorous way, and was nominated for Best Performance in the 8th Hong Kong Theatre Libre.
In the same year, We Draman Group has brought together a group of “Core members”. Through workshops, script readings, and independent productions, they have laid a solid foundation for their creative and performance skills, fostered team spirit, and engaged in collaborative creation through continuous learning.
In 2021, We Draman Group has adopted “Clothing, Food, Shelter, Transportation” as creative theme. The majority of the creative team are “Core members”. After exploring of “Clothing” and “Food”, we presented Draft My Life - A Concept Musical with “Shelter” as the central theme in early February 2024, achieving a full-house success. The script and songs were collaboratively created by playwrights, directors, and actors among the “Core members” .
Moving forward, We Draman Group will continue pursue our artistic vision and provide the best theatrical art to the Hong Kong audience or even promote the results to places outside Hong Kong.
